The original location of Hat Yai Restaurant, specializing in Southern Thai fried chicken, curry, roti and other favorite foods from the region.
Thailand meets Portland, and the fusion is flawless and comforting.
Being a southern girl I never played about my fried chicken but this spot didn’t disappoint.
The chicken was Golden, succulent and perfectly spiced.
The curry velvety and rich begging to be scooped up with buttery roti bread. Don't forget the sticky rice.
Fresh, vibrant, flavorful every time.
They never miss. Go taste for yourself.
Who knew Thai people were masters of fried chicken? Coming from the South, I’m critical about comfort soul food.
The crust was a perfect thickness and very crispy. The seasoning was very unique, wish I had an option to make it spicer but for the general masses it’s perfect — not spicy but full of flavor.
My wife got the pad Thai and is probably the best thing on the menu, it was amazing.
Lastly, I finished everything off with a Thai iced coffee. As a warning, this is not a traditional iced coffee. It has bold spices, clove being one of them and cinnamon as well. I enjoyed it as a way to switch up my coffee routine but 3 others in my group didn’t love it. It’s only $5 so definitely worth a try, maybe see if they can give you a sample before you buy.
You just order food at the counter, and they will serve it to you at the table. It’s nice to sit outside and enjoy the good weather, but it can be difficult to find parking. I like the Hat Yai fried chicken and Southern Thai ground pork. This is a popular local spot. I recommend stopping by if you’re in the area.
We are major foodies and this was one of the best meals we’ve had in the PNW. We got the Hat Yai for 2, $30 flat. Chicken was perfectly done, curry had layers of spice with a beautiful consistency and the roti was crispy and chewy at the same time. The outdoor seating was also a plus! This is the type of meal you thank your ancestors for.
I can't say enough good things about my experience, and it's all thanks to Devin! His exceptional service was hands down the main reason I'll be coming back. Devin's attention to detail and genuine care made the visit truly memorable. Oh, and let's not forget the amazing gluten-free deep-fried chicken—it was absolutely delicious! But honestly, Devin's warm and welcoming attitude sealed the deal for me. Highly recommend!
Popped in for a quick bite to eat. Our orders came fast and were delicious. The braised pork belly was phenomenal.
Always a treat!
So good!
Love this place. The food is outstanding, it's one of my go to places in the city.

Brought my family to try for the first time. The food smelled amazing as we walked through the door. That’s probably the reason we didn’t just turn around and walk out. We received really poor customer service from start to finish. We were never greeted which was awkward because there was a waitress standing next to us at the register. We sat ourselves and that was the vibe the entire meal- be ignored! Food was good and different. we won’t be back. The waitress was terrible.
Very impressed with the food and staff. Really a nice dinner experience.
We must go here every time we're in town. The service is great and the food comes out fast and fresh. Highly recommend the spicy marg. The Pad Thai is done the way it should always be done-- funky and flavorful.
Top tier every time! I love you Hat Yai!
I LOVE THIS PLACE. The chicken is amazing and the sticky rice and roti rock my face off. I could spend a day guzzling their delicious curry, and the Thai tea balances it so well. My only real problem when eating here is deciding what I want to enjoy. The combo is a classic, and my favorite. But the oxtail soup is off the chain, and they have a pad thai that always satisfies my craving.
Excellent though limited menu. Fast preparation. Casual.
Great pad Thai!
I wish I took a photo of all the wonderful food! I'll update with a photo if I find one.
Service:
I had Hat Yai cater for us, and was in constant communication with Alan Akwai, the founder (I believe?). I reached out 2.5-3 weeks ahead of time and went over my order with him over e-mail. This was a catering done for about 25-30 attendees and we had a lot of yummy leftovers. Alan was extremely accommodating to changing of timing of when we would like the food. A few days prior he sent an e-mail with a confirmation for day and time, and the day of we were in constant communication via text to ensure that our food was delivered. He came in with two huge thermal packaged food containers with our order. Our food was warm and perfect by the time we had our late lunch/early dinner. He set everything up in the kitchen, which included the orders in foil trays, serving containers, and little note cards with the name of the dish.
Food:
Menu itself is gluten free except for Muu Hong and Roti. There are various vegan and vegetarian options.
With these various orders came jasmine rice, sticky rice, cucumber salad, and a really lovely pickled veggies platter. The sides really highlighted and matched well with all of the dishes.
1) Small Whole Chicken 2) Small leg quarter. The chicken was crispy and juicy. Great with and without the sauce that comes with it. Crispy shallots on top gave another added texture that was nice. Would definitely order again.
3) Small Muu Hong. Pork belly was delicious. A sweet, and gingery sauce with nicely rendered pork belly. If there are any leftovers, it is very good to fry in a cast iron.
4) Small Brisket Curry 5) House Curry 6) Small Vegan Curry. All very flavorful. Brisket curry was just a little spicy for some of the guests, but as someone who likes spice it was very mild. Of the three curries the house curry had a wonderful flavor. I could eat that on plain rice or roti and would be content. Would highly recommend the house curry.
7) Large Roti. Crispy and airy. Slightly sweet. Goes really well with the house curry.
8) Mushroom skewers. Really generous portions of what I believe are king oyster mushrooms, but I could be wrong. 3 big chunks per skewer.
9) Coconut Mango Horchata. Best that I've ever had. All the food was amazing, but this was maybe my favorite thing? Great balance of flavors. Viscosity similar to a mango lassi.
Atmosphere: N/A.
All in all, I would definitely cater from this place again and head out to their restaurant for when I'm in Portland. For awhile I wasn't sure if we had enough food, but it was definitely more than enough with the amount of people we had. Fair amount of leftovers and if there is extra jasmine rice, the next day fried rice you make will be incredible.
11/10. We visited Hat Yai two years ago and still think about it to this day and how good the food was. If you’re remotely near Portland, OR you must check this place out.
Amazing food especially the Thai BBQ Chicken and their unforgettable Roti (Thai flat bread). Very small and constrained eating indoor eating pace, larger outdoor covered area with small heaters. I really recommend take-out as the in-restaurant seating is inadequate, cramped, and totally lacks intimacy. You can order and pay online and avoid the entire hassle. Just come in,give your name, get your food. When it is busy, there can be a line, wait staff and customers coming in and out of the entrance, and the whole thing is honestly claustrophobic. You order at the counter. The staff is efficient, and polite, but always seems a little bit distant (not unfriendly, but not warm or inviting). My order always comes fast (it is generally ready and waiting for me 5 minutes before it was promised). and exactly as I order. The price is a little high for Thai, but the quantity and quality explain/justify it. No parking lot, street parking is hard to find on Killingsworth but relatively simple if you park on 16th, 17th, or 18th Aves. Really good food. I highly recommend.
Decent food, very overpriced
As lovers of Thai food, the food here was sadly pretty underwhelming... The curry tasted of cinnamon—didn't feel like a Thai curry at all. And the pad thai tasted like lo mein noodles.
Wow Hat Yai is a hidden gem in Seattle. The food was delicious and that service was great!! I highly recommend this place for Thai, it was so good!!
Cool outdoors but it's a mad house with no direction
We came to celebrate my nibbling's 25th birthday. We sat outside, despite the cold (51°F) and were warmed by a gas fire on the table and the curry in our tummies.
My very picky kid did not love the food. His loss, our gain! We got to try the chicken skewers in addition to the fried chicken for 2!
The chicken was tender & juicy with a crispy, delicious fried crust. The pickled veg was yummy, even if there was a whole shallot in the mix? Or maybe it was the center of an onion?
The tamarind dipping sauce was amazing and this was my first experience with Roti, and I'm in love!
Looking forward to another reason to drive in from Hillsboro for a treat!
Maybe this was a misfire on yalls behalf or maybe it's just me, I'm not sure. Honestly I'm not wowed. Coriander seeds, so much coriander seeds, so easy for me to point out and all over. Definitely not a favorite when it over powered everything. The chicken was still juicy, all of that was perfect, it was good chicken, but simply too much coriander seeds. My rice, I wish I made that at home... I must've gotten the bottom of the pot or something because it was just hard and dried out. Idk, I said this could be a fluke with all the people I see saying it's good 🤷♀️ I'll give it another go at some point because I want to believe it's good but atm totally not my jam
Delicious! Good portion sizes, just the right amount of spice. Loved the roti, casual environment with high quality food
That curry. The oxtail soup. The sticky rice and roti. Fried chicken to top it all off?! Yes please.
I've been here 2 or 3 times. The fried chicken and roti are the best thing on the menu so far, IMO. They get busy, even on a Monday night. Good, busy atmosphere. Small seating area inside and outside.
Do you know that initial walking into a restaurant or store feeling ?
I'm not feeling it ..
The outside atmosphere is nice the tables are somewhat comfortable, but there's this weird smell of garbage in the air on the front patio.
The interior lighting is depressing.
Maybe if your emo or goth you might like this place, but I just don't see the appeal.
I'm sure the food is quite lovely but after my initial interaction I decided to just go with a wine and wait for an Uber to another place.
I'd also skip on the wines because I didn't think they actually tasted very good.
I truly am sorry but this just isn't a place for my tastes.
Over cooked chicken wings, not really Thai curry
Able to show up and manage a table deep in the heart of this Thai workshop. We ordered the chicken, a curry and a few sides. A super hearty meal that ended up being quite filling. The flavours were excellent on the chicken and paired well with a bit of spice from the curry. Our cocktails were well thought through and mixing combinations that ended up unexpected but quality. All in all a very great place to get a hearty Thai banquet.
The chicken tasted delicious. After having it for the first time I had to eat it again the next day. I would definitely recommend.
Fried Chicken was fantastic! Did not like the pork belly. Short Rib was good.
Waited 20 min at restaurant after estimated pick up time to get home to an incomplete order. Bad service doesn't make up for the food
Believe the hype.
The best food I had in Portland all weekend. Loved the no fuss atmosphere, spicy margarita, and the family style dishes. Would definitely go back next time we are in town.
combo plate. perfect for two people. your taste buds really travel around asia… my problem often with asian fusion is its usually restaurants doing too many different styles of food averagely, instead of doing one style exceptionally. we ordered take out and the food held up. it was interesting and flavourful and everything paired well together.

Best fried chicken I've ever tried 😋 in Portland.
Good and popular for a reason!
Had soy cured short rib and that was our favorite dish. Hat Yai combo's chicken was really juicy and crunchy but roti and sticky rice was hard and the curry was very strong for the amount of rice. Staff was great. One of them danced with my toddler :) lively environment and cool to be close to the kitchen seeing the fire from the wok!
Oh, pickled veggies was on point and needed for richness of the dishes.
Really delicious fried chicken and curry 🤤
The service was meh. The food was awesome! The only thing I complained about is to please cut back on the cardamom. Just a pinch will do it. It overpowers the flavor of our lunch. It’s a very strong spice. Otherwise you guys got it down… just like how my mom makes it.
OMG. So good. Someday I'll get past #1....
I don’t understand the hype. Mediocre at best. Mediocre fried chicken- too much coriander. Mediocre roti. Did not like the flavor of the curry- tasted like cinnamon. Pad Thai was okay- it just looks different because it’s wrapped in egg. I didn’t like how all the ingredients in the pad thai were not cooked and you had to add the raw scallions and peanuts yourself.
Best fried chicken!
I've never had a bad meal here, not even a subpar one. The roti, the curry, the fried chicken, and the sticky rice all come together to create an incredible meal, second to none. Give it a try, you won't be dissapointed.
Love Hat Yai! Such good everything, my husband and I had the Hat Yai for two!
If you go here for the first time you need to get the hat yai dish. The chicken is very good and the curry is heavenly, especially if the roti is dipped in it. My one complaint is the rice was a little dry but other than that absolutely exceptional. By modern standards not very expensive.
Had a wonderful time at lunch! We ordered the Wings and Muu Hong plate and shared both. They were both delicious in their own way. The pork was soft and melted in your mouth, and the chicken (and sauce) were perfect! The Coconut Mango Horchata was also a delight and felt like a little dessert drink during the meal. Our total came out to $38.5 for two drinks and two plates.
The food was delicious and the ambience was great. I would highly recommend the curry :)
Wow. Best in class for sure.
Everything is delicious! Big flavors, perfectly cooked and extremely consistent. My favorite fried chicken in Portland.
We came here with a group while visiting Portland and the place was very busy which was a great sign! You order at the counter and seat yourself and we were able to find a table outside. We ordered the vegetable curry and the Hat Yai dish. The curry was delicious and the roti was incredible. The Hat Yai chicken was tasty as well but was very fried with a lot of batter coating which wasnt my favorite. Drinks were great! We would come back!
I have finally filled the Pok Pok shaped hole in my heart 🥲 SO GOOD!!!!
Don’t think about it just try it! This is the only restaurant I’ll drive from Vancouver into Portland for great vegan/ vegetarian options and even better options for the meat eaters
I have no idea how people are giving this place 4.6 rates?? Seems like they never tried yummy food.By seeing this rate I went there with my family to enjoy my visit in Oregon but seriously the taste of food was yuk. We never had any bad food taste like this place. There was no server for 20 minutes then she showed up once . No table cleaning no water on your table. Long wait for your food. I think just local people are supporting them by giving them 4.6 rates that’s all. Yukie food
The taste of the food was delicious. Having said that, I got several pieces of “beef” that were just fat. Our stomachs did not have an easy time digesting this food, probably because it’s very high fat content. Got the lychee drink, it was just okay. Again, the taste of my food was great, so I would recommend it if you want to try interesting food.
Very rude and avoidant customer service. Will not be returning to this location. Food was amazing.
I got takeout, and the food itself was absolutely incredible.
Unfortunately, I found FOUR short hairs in my food as I was eating. Pretty icky.
Truly amazing food in casual surroundings; I particularly recommend the brisket curry if you’re feeling super-fragrant or the shrimp in tamarind broth if you want something that rly tastes like what you’d get in Thailand. Fried chicken and roti for the naughty option. The horchata also fab. We went here twice during our time in Portland!
Amazing south Thai food. Recommend the fried chicken with curry and roti and the mango sticky rice! We sat outside. Nice atmosphere, busy street. Order at the bar and bus own tables. Casual but worth it for the food
One of my most desired stops in Portland! I couldn’t wait to try Hat Yai. The food and drinks were very good, chicken was super crispy and the prices were reasonable. I was surprised at how loud the music was in the restaurant, it made it a bit hard to hear each other talking.
My favorite restaurant in Portland. They just don't miss. I always make sure we stop in at Hat Yai when folks visit from out of town, and it's a game changer on those nights where you just want to treat yourself to something special. The chicken is incredible. A local treasure.
Incredible! Good portions for sharing and our dishes were full of depth and flavor. Got the brisket curry and a shrimp and oyster mushroom dish. Both were excellent. Will definitely be back.
A place that makes me "upset" in so much that it show cases some cuisines that it took me till 38 to try.
Billing itself as a Southern Thai, the Malay influences make this different from the standard Thai that probably springs to mind. The curry here is a thicker, darker gravy like consistency and oh my god is it so so good. To quote Barney Gumble "Just hook it into my veins."
The fried chicken was delicious and flavorful and crisp, without the breading one associates with American Southern fried chicken. Cooked absolutely perfectly by leaving the white meat still juicy.
Khao Yum is light and delightful with a lot or wonderful contrasting notes and flavors. I will provide the caveat of be careful with how you mix it, because they have a nice helping of hot pepper garnish which will absolutely blow you up if you tragically dont have a high spice tolerance.
Would go back, will go back
This was a great little place. The food is very good. There is kind of a lot on the menu so take a few minutes. The fried chicken is really really good.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
My only fault I would say is I wish they had a bigger place. But that won’t stop me from enjoying the food at this location.
I’ve never had a bad bite of food here. Both locations are incredibly consistent. Also the prices are very reasonable. I would recommend the hat yai for 2.
Always soul nourishing food at this place. First time at the Killingsworth location. Small place, chill/basic vibes, with no pretentiousness. Service took longer than we expected on a Monday evening for dinner but they seemed to have a bunch of to-go orders to manage.
Brisket curry, beef cheek and roti are excellent. Worth the price for sure. Always recommended.
Everyone I know raves about this place and I just didn't get it. My friend chicken was okay. The sauce was tasty. Won't be going back unless a friend REALLY wants to. I guess I prefer Northern Thai 🤷♀️
Excellent chicken, roti, and curry
I just didn't care for it but that may just be a matter of taste.
Read on Reddit that this place had some amazing fried chicken and it most definitely did not disappoint. I was so excited to find out the chicken was gluten free. The curry was so good. I left feeling very satisfied. Will return, 100%.
Delicious food! I had the pork belly and it was super delicious however I felt as though I had quite a lot of fat. Obviously it's pork belly so there's gonna be fat but I think they could gain to add a little more meat or trim it up a bit. (Just my preference) besides that everything was amazing! Really authentic. Portions seem small but are actually super filling.
Delicious. Chicken legs were juicy and crunchy, curry was rich and flavorful, the garnishes were perfect and the roti was crispy and chewy. 10/10
A must eat! Would definitely go again.
This was a second round when we loved it so much the day before. We made sure to come here before leaving the last day. I went to both locations this one and the other one. This location is smaller, cozy & intimate spot. They have 2 picnic benches outside for the nice weather.
.
This place has amazing southern thai fried chicken, with roti & curry iand sticky rice combo nspired by southern thai cuisine. This spot is like a must try spot!! It's like you haven't been to Portland oregon if you haven't been here.
.
There are lots of street parking available which is quite easy. You walk in and order & pay at counter. We walked in after lunch time on monday and there was no wait. I
highly recommend getting one of their combos where you can try multiple things!
.
I got 2 hat yai combo ($20) to share between 4 people, each combo came with a fried chicken leg quarter, wing, sticky, rice, malaysian-style curry & roti (flat bread). it was all sooo good (+ a lot of food for a good price), I was in tears of joy as I'm eating this combo.
.
* roti: hand made tortilla/crepe, its thin and crispy. dip it in the curry & I was wow! The curry sauce is like crack and you just can't stop eating it.
* fried chicken : crispy. flavorful, juicy for fried chicken.and there are fried onion bits which is so good.
* curry: spicy, sweet, is so good with the rice and chicken as a dip!
.
Overall if we come visit a place 2 times during the trip, it's that amazing. Hope this review helps and thanks for reading. Have a yelptastic day!
The curry and fried chicken here was amazing. If you’re a cabbage lover— the side of cabbage is divine. We also got their duck special which was just a little too hot for me. I’d love to come back and try some more. I’ve never had Roti (kind of like a flaky naan) before but I really liked it.
Most thai places tend to do the traditional yellow, red, green curries with pad thai and drunken noodles. And to a degree this place offers those too. But they genuinely have thai dishes I haven't had anywhere else that are absolutely delicious. Their beef cheek curry and roti set it served at this location only but its just amazing very savory and i really like the crisp of the roti and tang of the pickled veggies served on the side to help cut thru the meaty savory flavors. I've had their ox tail soup, brisket curry, muu Hong and pad thai too. All were delicious however their oxtail soup did catch me by surprise its not savory and heart as much as it's got the astringent tang and sourness you'd expect from a tom kha soup, minus the coconut, I still enjoyed it.
Oh, man, let me tell you, everything in this place was absolutely amazing! I mean, I couldn't resist ordering the wings, the steak skewers, and the curry with roti. And let me tell you, they were all incredibly delicious! Like, seriously, my taste buds were dancing with joy. It was an absolute feast of flavors, recommended!!!
I’ve eaten a lot of chicken wings, all across the United States. I can easily put Hat Yai’s into the top 5 I e ever had. They are fried crispy with the meat left succulent and tender. The outside is coated with shallots and coriander seed, a damn fine combination. If you were a fan of pok pok’s Ike’s wings, you should absolutely come on by. Not a clone by any means, but in the same vein.
Got the Hat Yai for 2 with my partner and it was surprisingly filling for how it looked! It was our first time dining here and the food was amazing. Presentation, flavors, textures were all so great. But of a small location but it’s very cozy and feels very lowkey and homey. Will definitely have to come back to try the specialty dishes and coconut mango horchata!!
I finally got to try Hat yai and sadly, it didn’t wow me as I thought it would. I ordered the chicken with sticky rice combo with roti and curry, oxtail soup, muu hong with Thai tea. A lot of reviews talked about the chicken and how good it was and honestly, it was mid. It was just ok. Not good, not bad, but just ok. It wasn’t as crispy and it was a bit dry. The flavor of the chicken didn’t wow me but the sauce made it a bit better. The muu hong (pork belly) was also just ok but the oxtail was good. The flavor of the oxtail soup was really good and reminds me a lot of a filipino soup dish called sinigang. The Thai tea wasn’t too sweet which I actually prefer. The roti and the curry had a nice flavor to it that I enjoyed.
Casual atmosphere. Service is pretty good, but have had a couple mistakes here and there but they are good about making it right. Delish food. Always worth going back for.
Chill atmosphere, delicious food and fast service. Definitely a comfortable vibe for everyone. Street parking is limited, but then again, there’s limited seating. Gender neutral environment with great taste in music. I liked this spot a lot! If ever in the area, check it out!
Obviously the fried chicken and curry! But don’t sleep on the brussels, dtom som shrimp, or whiskey smash. So delicious.
The food is tasty and service is friendly (although it is counter service). The place is small but cozy and fun.
Really delicious fried chicken. Very moist, skin is fried to a crisp, and basically falls off the bone. Roti and curry is delicious. We also got the southern pad Thai and it's good, but somewhat deconstructed and not knock-your-socks-off. I should have tried either the brisket curry or oxtail in hindsight.
An absolute neighborhood gem! I’ve been obsessed with Hat Yai the moment I tried it. I was HOOKED! I think I eat here like 3 -5 times a month bc I am such a big fan! Zoey and the team are AMAZING! We feel such great hospitality when we come in, I appreciate how Zoey always go above and beyond for us and they work soooooo hard and I take my friends from out of town every chance we get! Chicken love is always in full abundance! my current obsession is ox tail soup and my wife is KP. Crew are sooooooo friendly and mango horchata is a must !
Was staying at the nearby Kennedy school and decided to come by for dinner. It was a nice summer night and both indoors and outdoors seating was available. The menu is simple and I was recommended to go with the standard curry with naan + chicken, which is unlike what I had before but excellent nonetheless. Nice area.
Excellent fried Chicken and curry with a really good sweet and sour sauce.
Awesome food! Really enjoyed it. Would highly recommend. It got a little busy but it was Saturday night and that's a good problem to have. Food was excellent. Very nice servers/staff as well.
Holy moly. I just ordered from this place for delivery and had an INCREDIBLE meal. What a gem! I can’t wait to try it in person!
Get the Hat Yai combo.
This place has the most amazing food. The flavors are just divine. Made my 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Chakra very open and satisfied. It's a must try for sure!
Amazing food, everything we had(including cocktails) was delish. The hat yai for two is honestly the perfect amount of food that gives you a taste of the restaurant’s best, but we couldn’t help ourselves, and also got the squash special that was delicious as well. The mango horchata with rum was the perfect compliment to the meal. If you ate in the area you have to stop by
Great Thai food. Wonderful service. Tiny and eclectic. Worth the drive.
The hours are listed incorrectly in google so I was turned away at lunch time. I can’t say if they’re good or not, but call first.
Yum!!!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, this spot. I am an oxtail lover, and their oxtail soup was amazing. Not how I am used to eating oxtail, but I'm so glad I tried it. Perfect amound of spice and aromatic flavor. The roti reminded me of Indian food I had in the islands. The squid dish was one my favorites. Overall this was a fun and exciting meal. I know this place is about the fried chicken, but that was far from the best thing. My wife lived the chicken, I thought it was just ok. That is a personal preference and not a negative review. Can't wait to come back here!!
wow. stupid delicious food and drinks.
Everything I've tried there is delicious!
Everything was fantastic! I usually stop to take pictures but couldn’t help just digging in immediately. We’ve been meaning to come here since before Covid and finally made it. So glad we did! The fried chicken, brisket curry, and pad Thai were all fantastic. The roti was delicious. Overall it was great and we will happily go back!
They were extremely busy which I understand that that's life but the lady told me to wait outside for my order where I waited for an extremely long time in the cold when I had to go back in and ask for it it was already ready just sitting there waiting so even though she said that she was going to bring it out to me I sat outside for 10 minutes in the cold and rain before I went back inside and seen that my order was already ready sitting there not being touched the prices in difficulty and how little the place is I wouldn't recommend it to nobody
The food is always amazing. Atmosphere is meh, but you come here for excellent southern Thai food
YES, Hat Yai. Just YES. everything is incredibly flavorful, well-cooked and well-spiced. Fried chicken ( always GF) is 🔥. I branched out and ordered the green curry brisket and it is DELICIOUS. Pickles that come with the dishes are are, well, perfect. Picked shallots?! Yum. Cauliflower and brussels sprouts are just right - never soggy and not too sweet, even delivered. The pad thai comes rolled in a paper thin omelette (how do you do that?!) and is amazing.
Portions are smaller than some other places, but I assume that’s due to the care and artistry they put into preparing the food and the high quality ingredients. Seriously some of the best delivery I’ve ever had - those are some A+ leftovers.
I can’t speak to the in-house experience, but can only assume it’s even better.
Thank you, Hat Yai, for being a bright spot in my day / week. You’re the best of the best.
🍛🙏❤️🙏🥘
My oh my was this a treat. I placed a large order for pick up to eat home that included a hot hai for 4, brisket curry and oxtail soup! The curry that comes with the fried chicken is so thick and flavorful with what I can only describe as the flavors of fall. The chicken is so crispy good and Vega to be dipped in the curry. The fried shallots are so good as a garnish on top of the rice with a spoonful of the curry as well. The oxtail soup is so rich with fatty, marrow goodness yet finishes light and clean from the acid in the tomato and ample lemon grass flavor imparted in the broth. The beef brisket curry was so fragrant with a touch of spice that went so well the the beautifully braised beef brisket. A++ for Hot Hai!
Truly a great experience. The Oxtail soup was phenomenal. Also the coconut mango horchata was very good. Furthermore the staff is kind & attentive. Definitely will be back! 👏🏽
Absolutely fell in love with this place! As somebody that would frequently visit Indonesia to see family the roti is fantastic and good enough that I would share with my family if they were ever to visit.
Because of that, this place has instantly become a comfort food go to for me, the curry is hot, warm in fighting in the perfect level of spice, even for those that are new to spice.
I don’t think that you can do this place justice if you don’t get the fried chicken that they have as that is the real star of the show. Exactly how my Indonesian grandmother would make it.
Food was delicious and service was excellent. They forgot to put a drink in my pick up and refunded me ASAP. Would return.
Best chicken ever... Also try their kua gling (if you dare)
Delicous food! This is an order at the counter type of place. They get really busy sometimes, and it can be a bit of wait for food on the weekends. The staff are great and quite nice. This is a southern style of Thai food. This Thai food is different than most thai restaurants. The food is outstanding. The food that says it is spicy, which means it is on fire spicy at this place I learned the hard way. My favorite is the Pad Thai wrapped in egg. Everything is so yummy! Moderate prices, decent portion size, and street parking.
I was craving fried chicken and Hat Yai totally filled it.
I don't think I've ever had fried chicken with the flavors that Hat Yai has--I am speechless on how to describe it. Just go try it out for yourself and tell me if you've had it anywhere else. We ordered the Hat Yai for two which was half a chicken, sticky rice, 2 roti's and curry. We ended up adding 2 additional wings for $3 each since we were starving. This ended up being the right amount of food for my husband and I. The roti too was amazing. It was soft and flakey which made it perfect for dipping in the curry. I encourage anyone who wants fried chicken with a twist to try out Hat Yai for a unique experience.
Food was fine, reddit and food lists have this place up high on their recommendations, but I felt the house curry was a bit one note in flavor and the fried chicken lacked any fatty or complex flavors. Ice coffee was nice but somewhat floral which isn't my preference. Maybe I need to try other things like the oxtail which looked good from photos, but what I had was just fine and not what I was hoping for based on reviews.
yes! 2 wings and rice …. so so delicious
So delicious
I am very particular when comes to Thai food. Hat Yai is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Oregon. They serve southern Thai food that is authentic and don’t find at other places. Anytime when I missed home, I ordered food from them. You won’t get regular fried rice like other places or Panang curry :). You will see the different dishes. What I usually get; Southern Thai Ground Pork, Brisket Curry, Sauteed Cauliflower with Egg (help with spicy taste from ground pork) and a Leo beer. For dessert , try dessert roti. Anytime when I eat this roti, it reminded me of being on a street in Thailand, buying it from a tiny tiny food cart, waiting and watching the seller tossing, flipping the roti ❤️
Loved our visit. My partner and I shared a half chicken with the house curry and I can’t stop thinking about how delicious the curry was. A perfect lunch date in a great area.
The flavours definitely wow’ed us! Yummmmm. Brisket curry and Pad Thai were incredible. The service was ok, not great. I’d go again and recommend it.
We came here after spending seventy dollars on two cocktails and an app down the street. This meal costs half the price and was absolutely excellent. I would have licked the curry bowl clean if my husband would have let me. Next time we come, we’ll be getting carry out so I can do just that. Could not recommend more highly.
