Spiced-to-order creative Thai cuisine served in an art-adorned space with a tropical feel.
The Best Dining Experience in Carson City
When we walked into Basil Thai Cuisine in Carson City, we walked into Thai Basil hungry and what we got was so much more than I could have imagined. From the moment we sat down, I knew I was in for something special.
You know, I’ve been around the block when it comes to Thai food, but walking into Basil Thai Cuisine in Carson City… I didn’t expect much. And yet, the moment that pumpkin curry hit my lips, I knew I was wrong. Dead wrong. The spice – no, the fire – was otherworldly, as if the god of heat himself decided to take up residence in my mouth. But it wasn’t just about the heat; it was about balance. The basil – fresh, fragrant – cut through the inferno, grounding the dish in a way that only Thai cuisine can. It was… masterful.
Let’s start with the food. I ordered the pumpkin curry with chicken, and I asked for it with a level five spice. Let me tell you, it was a flavor explosion—nuclear heat that hit hard but was perfectly balanced by the creamy coconut milk and the fresh, fragrant basil. It wasn’t just spicy for the sake of it; it had depth, richness, and soul. Honestly, it was one of the best curries I’ve had in years. I tried to mix it up by asking for rice noodles instead of the usual rice, and they nailed it. The noodles were the perfect vehicle for soaking up all that delicious sauce.
My girl ordered the Hawaiian fried rice with chicken, and it was absolutely perfect. The chicken was cooked to perfection, and the pineapple was sweet and tender, but still had that perfect crispness to it. You could tell the ingredients were fresh. Every bite had the perfect balance of sweet and savory. It was the kind of dish you just can’t stop eating.
Then there was the green papaya salad. It had such an incredible crunch, and the combination of peanut sauce with rice wine vinegar created this amazing blend of sweet, tangy, and nutty flavors. Every bite refreshed the palate, especially after the spice from the curry. The dish was light, bright, and just plain delicious.
But it wasn’t just the food that stood out. The service was exceptional. Our waitress, Saya, was magnificent. She noticed right away when they brought rice instead of the rice noodles I had asked for, and she fixed it without me even needing to say anything. She made us feel so welcomed, and her attention to detail and warmth really elevated the experience. It’s rare to find such attentive and thoughtful service these days, and Saya made the entire meal feel personal and special.
The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated, with a cozy, authentic Thai vibe. The place was immaculately clean, and you could tell that a lot of care goes into every detail. The atmosphere was welcoming, and it had that perfect balance of being comfortable yet refined. It’s the kind of place where you feel at home the moment you walk in.
All in all, Basil Thai Cuisine is, without a doubt, one of the best dining options in Carson City. The food was outstanding, the service was impeccable, and the ambiance was spot-on. From the fiery pumpkin curry to the perfectly balanced Hawaiian fried rice and the refreshing green papaya salad, every dish was a winner. If you’re looking for a meal that’s more than just good, but truly memorable, this is the place to go.
we were welcomed nicely and received water shortly after we took our seats. the water tasted much better than in other restaurants. the spring rolls as appetizers were delicious. you could tell that they were homemade. 1x fried rice with shrimps and 1x fried rice with tofu was also delicious. the portions were huge. a nice cozy family restaurant. definitely worth a visit if you like thai cuisine.
Thai Basil in Carson City is a fantastic spot for authentic and flavorful Thai food! The dishes are always fresh, perfectly seasoned, and full of bold flavors. The Pad Thai and Green Curry are our go-to favorites, but everything on the menu is delicious. The staff is friendly and provides great service, making the dining experience even better. Whether dining in or taking out, the food is consistently top-notch. Highly recommend if you're craving great Thai cuisine!
Excellent Thai food that is on par and perhaps better than what you find in Marin.
Every dish was enjoyable.
Service was a but slow, and soup service was odd. Didn't serve the soup into your bowl as is typical and the serving spoon was not a ladle. Just a regular tiny soup spoon.
It's hit or miss. I have had a very good lunch here previously. This last time, at dinner, my son's meal was very good; mine was iffy. The seafood components were good, but the vegetables and noodles were overcooked together into a bland mass of poor texture. The place is pricey and may be worth it or may not, depending on how an individual dish turns out. Service, wait times, and parking have all been acceptable.
We loved the food and the atmosphere but the service could have been better. Our server was attentive until we got our food and then we didn’t see her the rest of the time, other than her handing us our receipt and walking away. This definitely took away from the experience.
Like the Hawaianfried rice, drunken noodles, Bangkok fried rice

Service is bad, nobody will come check if need refill, sat 25 minutes, finally went to cashier to get bill, so we can leave
There was a time when The Basil was 5 stars. However now, that is no longer the case. It seems either management or ownership has changed. It is no longer the same place it once was. You can no longer taste the pride that was taken in the food. I ordered the yellow curry recently and the vegetables were way under cooked and the rich curry flavors were no longer the same. On top of that, the rice is no longer included and it is charged as a separate item. Probably as a way to hide the cost increases. I was very disappointed to find The Basil going the way of many other great local restaurants over the years.
Always delicious 😋
We ordered. 5 entrees, 2 appetizers and a soup. Every dish was exceptionally good. The service was wonderful. They brought out the dishes in courses that were timed just right. Prices are reasonable.
Very nice place with Christmas decor up now. Food excellent, tasty and Vegan. Loved the soup right to start the meal! Just passing through so will miss it!

The main dishes all tasted really good green curry, red curry and the eggplant ! They came witha cookie, salat and rice ! The interior is also pretty !
They offered us fresh , tasty vegetarian food with simple ingredients.
Green curry had perfect blend of spice and flavor! Very good !
We came two times here and it is just fantastic. One if the best Thai we had in the US since Seattle down the West Cost
Unfortunately having to update my review 🙁. Which was a 5 Star down to 3 Star, I want to make it very clear, that I have NEVER had a bad meal from The Basil Restaurant. They are our favorite Thai Restaurant. This updated review is solely due to their ongoing Price Increases! We have been loyal customers, enjoying them often for many, many years even through previous owners. But now I just can't, and am unwilling to pay $20 for Fried Rice. I mean, I know what the market rates on rice are, and as so many businesses increase all the prices blaming the economy, this one does not sit well with me. Their food is good, it's NOT $20 for rice dish good. We are very sad, as it was one of our favorite restaurants in Carson and maybe that popularity played into the owners decision to keep increasing and pricing loyal customers out of the market. 🙄
It's not reasonable for dinner for 4 to jump from $80 to $140+ in less than a year. Sad times indeed, if management is able to reassess their pricing we'd love to come back, but until then We All Are Getting Beaten Down From Inflation, but these price increase choices seem excess.
The food is great, looks great, smells great. But at what point do noodles with ginger and a little beef count as a $20 meal? Highly overpriced for Thai food. It's sad because we used to eat here a lot and it seems like everytime we come now the prices have gone up and up. You guys are good, just not luxury restaurant prices.
The food was delicious. Tons of flavor, seasoned well, cooked and fried perfectly. We got the vegetarian fried spring rolls, soft shell crab papaya salad, and drunken noodles with tofu and it was amazing. Highly recommend. And be sure to finish off your meal with the fried banana and coconut ice cream. 😋
This was a bad experience all around. The food was bad, the price was ridiculous (especially when compared to the quality), and the service was sluggish, to say the least. And to top it all off, everyone in our house got sick. This is an easy and complete pass.
I recently dined at The Basil Thai Restaurant and had an outstanding experience. While the menu prices may seem high initially, the generous portions and delicious flavors make it well worth it.
The dishes I tried, including the Pad Thai and Massaman Curry, were rich and authentic, beautifully presented, and packed with flavor. The warm and inviting ambiance, coupled with the attentive and friendly staff, made for a perfect dining experience.
We loved the food and the atmosphere but the service could have been better. Our server was attentive until we got our food and then we didn’t see her the rest of the time, other than her handing us our receipt and walking away. This definitely took away from the experience.
The food was amazing! The taste was spot on for every item we ordered!
Very good food at a reasonable price!
I love Thai food. If you love Thai food. This is absolutely NOT the place to patron. We have visited here in the years past and the food was excellent. There has obviously been a change of ownership and the quality is below par. What a shame. It’s not that difficult to provide good Thai food with fresh ingredients and knowledgeable kitchen staff, I will absolutely not be returning here. As I said before, what a shame. We ordered the softshell crab green papaya salad. The green papaya was coarsely cut, and sloshing in the dressing. The soft-shell crab deep-fried very mediocre and greasy. (I love soft shell crab!)We also ordered the honey duck. Greasy granny and poor texture. The green chicken curry also, if you’re a green curry fan, as my family is you’ll be sorely disappointed. The pud thai was palatable but oily nothing to write home about. The basil fried rice we didn’t get to because our stomachs were so upset. Oh, and yes, we ordered the green beans. It looked like the Exxon Valdez oil spill. You get the picture. The white rice was OK. I absolutely would not recommend this place. if you are feeling adventurous and don’t exactly respect your stomachs go for it. 😩 lastly the stars are not accurate on the review. The service was 3 stars. The ladies took our order accurately and had most of their teeth. The food was definitely 1 star and the atmosphere 2 stars.
The drunken nuddles is a must!
I can't believe it! The lady flat out refused to seat us and insisted we order to-go, like that's some kind of brilliant idea! Then, to add insult to injury, she tells us the restaurant is closing soon. We already knew what we wanted to order, but nooo, she couldn't be bothered to accommodate us. It's ridiculous how she chose to handle the situation. They should put they close at 2:15pm instead of 2:30.
So, so good. Yum! Plenty of gluten free and vegan options. The menu was easy to maneuver to find my needed gluten free options.
we were welcomed nicely and received water shortly after we took our seats. the water tasted much better than in other restaurants. the spring rolls as appetizers were delicious. you could tell that they were homemade. 1x fried rice with shrimps and 1x fried rice with tofu was also delicious. the portions were huge. a nice cozy family restaurant. definitely worth a visit if you like thai cuisine.
I’ve been eating here for the past four years. Maybe I’m just getting tired of it and ready for a new place. But they just seem like they’re off their game lately.
The cream cheese wontons were not piping hot.
The shrimp pad Thai did not have any crushed peanuts on top. The tofu was not hot and fresh, and the shrimp was not very tender.
The vegetable medley had great flavor and the white rice was perfect
The gentleman in the table next to us was in need of something for the food that he was just served. The waitress comes up to our table to ask us what we would like to eat. She addressed the gentleman who was in need but did not go to his table. She stood at our table, and with a loud voice communicated with him, and then gave a snarky look as if she was put out by him.
One of the nicer restaurants in Carson City. Typically go for family special occasion dinners. Food is really good, prices are to be expected.
Food is always good here. They are constantly busy so be perpared to wait. Friendly staff, reasonable prices & quality food 😊
The food is unbeatable. If you don't save room for the fried banana with coconut icecream, you haven't lived.
Good Thai food. Nice portions and prices for lunch.
Always great food!
Always incredible service!
Nice place. Nice staff. Decent food!
Good portion sizes, noodles and curry were great, we were unsure based on more recent reviews, but the service was good as well
hadn't been here for 10 years and wasn't impressed with the food. It seemed bland.
My dish was a special pork dish. The vegetables and sides were perfectly done and sized. It was all absolutely delicious. Our server was delightful. Altogether, it is a wonderful place to enjoy a special meal in Carson City.
I have since returned 4 times and each time I try something different. Absolutely everything I eat is fantastic. The servers are always accommodating and very pleasant. One of my absolute favorites in Carson City. Actually better than several Thai restaurants in Portland Oregon. Go, you'll love it!
The pictures attached to my review are not in The Basil, but the review was for Basil. The photos are in Garibaldi Restaurant next door.
Great Thia food.
Great Food.
You have to Experience
the Quality Food.
Great, authentic Thai food
Love to dine here when we are in town. Great Thai food in a classy atmosphere.

Great food, nice and clean
We REALLY enjoy the food here, and so do our children which is a bonus.
No words describe the fantastic culinary Vegan experience we shared today.
Delicious green chicken curry and brown rice. They didn't ask how many stars I wanted, but it was spiced perfectly.
The food is very yummy. The service is amazing, everyone working is so friendly :)
Very busy restaurant on a Monday. Staff are very customer focused, and Friendly.
Loved how many delicious gluten free options there were! Everything we got was perfection.
Everything was awesome except my table partner received their entree before mine. Advice: Deliver all meals to the table at the same time. Otherwise, everything was perfect.
The food was good. Limited choices.
New owners?? Everything changed. New faces, service is subpar, like they can’t be bothered… strange.. probably been here 50 times in the past I hop the owners figure it out.
Solid spot all around - best in 100 miles. (Not anymore)
Food was very good! I would definitely go again!
Walking into this restaurant, my 1st impression was "wow, it's beautiful in here." Service and food sucked. We were seated quickly. Our food came out on a large plate with a small portion of food. I ordered a chicken and shrimp Pad Thai. ($14.95) Only had two shrimps in it. The food wasn't good. Would of rather drive into Reno for Bangkok cuisine. Service was fine until the older lady waiter commented on my daughter's skin color. She also asked where the tip was when we wrote on the ticket table. We haven't even left the table. Our family will not be dining here again.
One of my to go to restaurants in Carson City. They have tons of vegan options, and the menu is clear in what dishes they can make vegan. I probably went to Basil over 15 times, and they never had a mistake on my order. If you are going with someone who does not do well with spice, you can as their spices on the side. They have a few spice options that they made themselves.
Wonderful Thai food. Appetizer and meals were flavorful and nicely presented. The waitress was professional and friendly. We will be back here
Great food.
Killer food highly recommend, great for Dinner looking forward to trying lunch here.
Food was blander than I prefer.
Agreeable restaurant, excellent main dish unfortunately the Mango with sticky rice as a desert was not properly done.
Lovely place. One of my favorites in Carson!
Great panyang lunch special
Excellent food, very fast service.
Vegan selection is amazing
The Curry puffs are amazing! Vegan forever mow, and they are great about it!
this "famous" restaurant is a shell of it's former self with the change of ownership. No longer do I see the pride in the food and service that was when it was run by Nan and Bob. Plating is just tossed and served and the food selection is not there either. No more Musamun Curry either. Lunch will cost you about $20 now with tax and tip.
I only came back here to see if the new owners were able to keep the level of food and service the same. I had the Duck Gravy lunch special. It just didn't have the same wow flavor it once did. The pad Thai was just OK as well.
The food is always great.
My absolute favorite Thai restaurant! The food is delicious, the staff super friendly, and the ambiance is great. It’s also in walking distance to downtown shops and the Capitol.
The fried tofu with green curry was delicious.
We just had our dinner here after a day long skiing and it was just fantastic!
We ordered for Basil fried rice, egg plant with chicken entree and drunken noodles. The first two were so so good. A must try👍👍
Excellent
Nicely decorated and atmosphere. Too bad the food wasn’t as nice. Egg rolls were from a frozen box. Meat was the add after prep type. We were given what they said was “jasmine rice” and it was plain white rice. Sad that my birthday dinner wasn’t what I thought would be amazing thai food. Not worth the price you would pay for GOOD thai.
Excellent food and service! My coconut soup was awsome! My husband liked his too!
If you want great Thai food, this is your only option. Wait times are long due to the fact they are always busy.
They are always because because the food is fantastic.
The only thing that tops the great food here is the outstanding service. Every person who helped us, including the owner, was professional and kind. We went at a busy time and it didn't take long for us to get our meal. (We ate too fast to take pictures of our food but even the presentation was nice).
Thai is our go to food. While the place was actually pretty, service wasn't really good and a food was a bit mediocre for a Thai restaurant.
Walked in to place a To go order at 8:20pm, came all the way down from Reno NV to try it. I was greeted by a young lady who said that she didn't want to push tables together so we could wait for it (which we didn't mind not sitting), I let her know we just wanted some pad thai to go, she let me know that they close soon, I said that's okay we are taking it to go, she then said they had a lot of people so it would be at least 30 minutes for our food, I was willing to wait, I said, "We came from Reno to try your Pad Thai, would you prefer we leave?" She nodded and once again said they close soon, I said, "Sorry I wasted a drive down here," she couldn't have cared less. BYE, never trying this place, I just cannot believe you'd rather get rid of a new customer that may return and spread the word because you don't want to "bother" a to go order, so many restaurants do this now, if you're closing at 8:30pm and you want to be done serving anyone by 8:20pm, lock your doors and don't let anyone in, it's just sad, when I worked in food service we were open until 10pm, if you walked in at 9:50pm we'd NEVER make you feel bad for doing so, we treated you like everyone else, just sad that customer service has shot downhill everywhere now. Your loss! Probably not great food anyway.
Super friendly and great food. Basil fried rice is amazing. Highly recommend the fried prawns in I believe the mango sauce.
We travel to Carson City a few times a year and have stopped here previously and it was pretty good. The expensive duck curry came for our friend after my husband and I were finished. The duck was hard just tough couldn’t eat. When asked for spicy on three dishes non came even mild. My husband eats everything and he wouldn’t finish his drunken noodles as they were mush. Maybe
New owners. Service bad too. My food was warm by the time I could get some soy sauce. It was clean. One star
Great food and ambiance. I love this place.
I found out that they changed ownership and was a bit nervous. We started with Coconut Soup, it was truly amazing. Creamy and rich, we each had a decent size serving and still had some left.
Next we had Pad se ew with beef, Hawaiian fried rice, and Pra ram with shrimp.
Each dish was delicious and so many left overs.
It was my birthday so we had to have desert, we had the
Fried banana with coconut ice cream.
The ice cream was so creamy, the coconut flavor very rich. It tasted so fresh, natural homemade flavor (bananas were pretty good, but easily could be left off).
I love my ice cream... This one is my new favorite!
Best restaurant in town.
Beautiful interior, great and interesting food and wonderful service.
The Basil easily has the best Thai food in the area, we drive from Reno just to eat here. There are a few good Thai restaurants in Reno but none of them are as good as The Basil!
The food is the highlight of the dining experience but the service and atmosphere are great!
Waiters attentive and food was enjoyable. Dropped by for lunch and enjoy it
So good, as always. The basil fried rice is soo good.
Though the food was decent, barring one person the staff were pretty rude and discriminating. No one took our order until we asked after 15 min. After that the food did not arrive for another 25 min while other folks who came in after us already had their food. I ordered thai iced tea. After I saw several other tables being served before me, I again had to ask for mine. Overall extremely disappointed with the treatment.
This was my 1st time eating Here I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!. This place is so cute! It's very welcoming ( AND SO CLEAN) when you walk in. The decor definitely gets you in the mood for some of the most delicious food! And bring a big appetite! These portions (at least for all the items ordered at the table) were generous! There's no skimping here! The food is absolutely delicious and super fresh! I was really impressed!
To top it all off the staff were so friendly and attentive . You feel welcome from start to finish.
If you haven't been here your really missing out!
#SUPPORTLOCALBUSINESS
Very good Thai food! There was no wait for a table and the service was excellent. I had the cashew chicken which came with a small salad and rice. The tea was wonderful, Thai Jasmine. I need to find where to buy this now. An excellent lunch!
When I was visiting Carson city in 2014, I went to eat here many times and loved it. After 8 years, I got the opportunity to come to Carson city again and visited this restaurant twice last week and I must say the food is delicious and one of the best Thai places I have been to. It's nice restaurant and friendly service. If I get the opportunity to visit again, would definitely go again. Love from Canada 🇨🇦.
Delicious! Seafood combo with noodles, Teriyaki Chicken, and Pad see eu with shrimp. Amazing... Can't wait to go again. Make a reservation to avoid waiting.
Best Thai food in Carson City.
I spent $100 dollars on Thai food and they did not include white rice with the meal. When people order Curry and Pra Ram, the rice should be included!
We visited Lake Tahoe, wandering around the area and found this restaurant on Google. Based on reviews, we decided to try it. We were glad we did. Somtom was one of the best. We ordered beef salad and pork pad prik khing which were delicious as well. We were surprised to find this great Thai restaurant in such a small town.
Good food. Pad Thai was a bit sticky. Coconut soup was spot on. Papaya salad didn't have much flavor.
Really good restaurant. Very clean, and the food very tasty!
Used to be much better
Great place for lunch in Carson. I have been 3 times and had the Green Curry, and Pud Thai. All very good.
Delicious, recommend
Although the food was very good, the service was terrible.
Delicious entrees, will certainly eat here again
Favorite Tai food restaurant ever
Really good service. Food came out fast. Only complaint is that the seafood entree had peanuts but did not say on the menu.
Nice atmosphere, good customer service, and good food. The service was a little slow but it was the weekend and it was packed.
Came here for lunch. It was quick and very delicious. I got the yellow curry with tofu and my boyfriend got chicken cashew. It comes with a small bowl of veggie soup, small side salad, and a fried wonton skin with a scoop of white rice. I believe you can get brown rice for an extra charge? Also, veggie egg roll for extra as well.
Since the change in ownership the curry has changed. We ordered two curries tonight and both were very watery.
Definitely not the same since change in ownership. We got three dishes to go. The green curry with tofu was decent. The curry itself was quite good but came with too much tofu and too few veggies. Pad se ew and basil fried rice were both surprisingly meh. Soggy and bland. Even their chopped chilis in fish sauce side was bland as apparently they have simply replaced the fish sauce with vinegar. Nice people work there though.
A new generation has taken the reins. Will try the "To Go" place in rear next time.
Covid has changed things..
Delicious food!!
Absolutely loved the basil chicken and green curry dish. Date day with hubby and we will definitely be back. Good prices too!
(During lunch time) Overall, a good experience. In the beginning the service was slow unfortunately. (Yes, I understand "pandemic times"), but we waited to be seated for almost 5 minutes. There was only one other couple inside when we arrived. After we ordered, our food was delivered to our table at significantly different times, so my food was warm-ish by the time my wife's food was ready. The food portions look small, but give you that I'm pleasantly comfortable feeling. Pad Thai (chicken) was delicious and the Green Curry was good, although personally, it could have used more spice and more sauce and less giant pieces of vegetables.
During the meal, more guests were seated and all of a sudden there was some sort of magic trick that happened because there was now 4 wait staff members to take care of 6 tables. A solid place to visit when in the mood for something a little different.
It was delicious as always
Was there Monday 10/28/19 for
I have been back to this restaurant several times. The food is good and the service much better. Glad I gave it another chance.
Great food at a very reasonable price. The food came extremely fast and I ate much more than I thought I could.
I will definitely be returning here
We are from Vegas and took a short trip to Carson City. Came across this restaurant walking back to our car from the museum. The ambience is so nice and the lady was pleasant. Food is great esp the fried chicken teriyaki (?) Not sure what it's called and I regret not taking a picture but it was 1 of the best fried chickens I've ever had!
Beautiful place to eat with excellent food and wonderful staff. The food is beautifully presented. Well prepared and my "go to" place in Carson for Thai food.
Good flavor to the food. Nice service.
We love the mango spring rolls and pra ram chicken. The wonton soup and shrimp pad...something noodles...also awesome. Very friendly staff as well.
Okay restaurant if you are vegetarian.
Delicious food very nice atmosphere 😋
As a vegan, The Basil is one of my favorites! They have so many options for all food lovers and have always been willing to modify any dish I have asked them too. I'd you love Thai food, try The Basil. You can't lose!
BBQ Chicken was dinomite!
One of the best, we love this place. Awesome food. Keep it up.
