Noodles and rice
I have long looked for a wonderful Thai cuisine place in Des Moines Metro that I felt comfortable to dine in and the food was wonderful. I went clear across town but found it in the Silk Elephant. We started we vegetable samosas, one of my favorite appetizers and often had to find. Haven eaten homemade ones, I can say these were pretty spot on. I was impressed. My pad Thai may seem bland in the pics but that is due to allergies. It was however, very tasty. My husband got the lemon chicken and I have to say I was very impressed with the batter on the balls. My Thai tea was also on point and my husband, never having tried one, loved it. Bathrooms were clean but they had only opened an hour prior. Parking was free street parking. But there are tons of shops near by so you could make an evening of it. I would highly recommend and will be returning. Lucky I don't live closer or I'd be broke!
I tried their fried rice with shrimp. It was wonderful! Big portion, well-cooked shrimps and rice came in good texture. The lemonades were also tasty but they were too sweet. If I knew, I would have asked for less syrup/sweetness. We also ordered avocado with rice wrap. It was so fresh. I highly recommend it
First let me say that what I like about this place most is one specific dish. I have eaten at least 3 different dishes. Quite frankly, 2 of them were sub-par, in my opinion. BUT, their yellow curry is exceptional.
When I ate at the restaurant, the service and atmosphere are decent, however I mainly get my food to go now.
My biggest complaint is the portion and food quality consistency. Sometimes my rice is 3/4 full. Sometimes my rice is slightly burnt. Sometimes my yellow curry is filled up to the correct line. Sometimes it’s missing several ounces of sauce. Sometimes the potatoes are kind of raw. Sometimes I don’t get plastic utensils. I would highly appreciate if I could get the same quality and portion size each time and not have it be a mystery each time.
Like look at my picture. What are the staff thinking when sending this off. Just “that’s good enough”. I’m paying $20 just for this meal and this is the whole highlight. Everything else is white rice. Like can you fill me up correctly
However, the uniqueness of the dishes and quality of cooking is much better than a lot of places I have been to.
Lastly, the staff are nice, well-mannered and respectful.
We came here based on the Yelp reviews as we’re from out of town. Service was excellent, however their idea of medium spice is much different than mine. Be fairly warned. Medium is more HOT 🥵. I couldn’t finish my avocado curry. But I did enjoy our pork potstickers and crab Rangoon.
Silk Elephant is a nice place: clean, spacious and comfortable lighting. The staff was exceptional, on top of everything, polite and always making sure empty dishes were cleared away. Restrooms were clean. Plenty of parking (front and rear). Now let’s talk about the food. I had the Pad Thai, better than some I’ve had, worse than others. Everything was good, but the sauce is way too sweet. As I got toward the end, I had to stop. However, the potstickers were dynamite. Will try a different main coarse next time.
I'm not a big Asian food guy but my wife is. Atmosphere is great and our server did his best to take care of our large table of people. My wife had the silk fried rice, just bland and her rice was clumped, not freshly made it appeared. I had the Angry Elephant, was hoping it would have been better and I missed the fried rice side is another $3.50, my bad since I can take or leave any kind of rice, just assumed it came with but menu states clearly it charges, I missed it.
Excellent food, served quickly. Great for people with gluten sensitivity. Lots of vegetarian options. I generally don't like going to Ankeny but will make the sacrifice to go here again.

Food was not authentic, but service is what got to me, very bad service….
Great food, atmosphere, and lovely staff!
Lovely place in Ankeny. Close to our home - pleasantly surprised on how good food is. Fresh and perfectly cooked . Great building - great atmosphere :) will be back !
Food is ok, atmosphere is better than their food. But service, oh man where do I start? Service is really bad…. Can’t believe it… it’s like they didn’t even want me there. Will not return. Is it because I’m black?

This place is quite disappointing. The atmosphere is nice, but the food is just average and the service leaves much to be desired. The staff aren’t very friendly, making the experience somewhat awkward. Compared to the sister store, this place only stands out for its atmosphere, but unfortunately, the food and service detract from it significantly.
Allow me to start by saying, if i could give them a -3 Stars i would. This is one of the WORST places based off of customer service experience I've ever had. If you make a complaint about the food, they will take it PERSONALLY!!! Buyer be ware! Today we really took a chance on a new place, what a mistake. Upon ordering the food, i shared my dislike for the food. That seemed to be the wrong thing to do. However, the waitress was nice enough to bring another dish out to meet my demands. After trying it, (one bite) i requested that she take the food away due to my dislike for it. My partner did enjoy her food, but little did we know, i had upset the waitress with my honest feedback about the food. While my partner excused herself and walked to the restroom, the server brought the ticket. I asked, do we have to leave now? She said know but thought we were ready to go Lol. Keep in mind, we haven’t spent a full 20 minutes and it was only two tables in the entire restaurant. But i can take a hint. I check the ticket and saw that we were still being charged for the food i didn’t enjoy. She told us we had to pay for it due to me not expressing AGAIN that i didn’t like the food. She was not at any point disrespectful to us but did not seem to care at all about our dining experience or express any desire to change it. So here’s my advice, if you know what you want and are sure about it, then this is the place for you. If you're like me, a picky eater please don't go here. This place isn’t interested in anyone like us. She did give us a 10% discount and said she could not help anymore due to the fact that she didn't know i did not like the food. Its unfortunate because its such a beautiful place but the service just doesn't hold up. Btw we tipped her anyways because we do understand that people make a living this way. We will not be going back and we are asking everyone who works with us to not go here.
We ordered an entree at medium spice and another at no spice to decide which is right for us.. Unfortunately neither spice is right. The medium is not good. The no spice is bland and nearly tasteless. We will go to other Thai restaurants that can handle lower spice levels but still provide a more tasteful entree.
You've gotta try the duck bacon wontons. The garlic noodles and Kha Soi are great too.
Greta Thai dinner spot. Food is always ready on time for pick up.
The food is subpar, not very authentic. The menu is very limited, with poor options. We have been there twice and will definitely never go back. The staff needs to be more friendly and pleasant. If you have a palate for good food, you will taste how much they sugarcoat their food.
Was a great experience overall.
Music was a bit loud and could use a bit of color in the decor.
Great food, great service. My husband and I have had silk elephant many times and love it more and more each time! Love the atmosphere and service has always been amazing and top notch.
The atmosphere is nice. Plenty of parking. I just can't believe I paid $16 for a bowl of rice. I won't do that again.
I will take pics next visit. I ordered pad Thai and Thai coffee 👍. I asked for medium heat and it was perfect. Service was excellent.
Delicious food, well served portions, lovely atmosphere and kind staff.
Definitely worth it!!

The food was good, but the service was terrible. It wasn't busy. All the employees were hanging out at the bar. We had to get up after 5 min of waiting to get water to bring to our table.
This is the best Thai food in town!! The fresh spring rolls were wonderful. The peanut noodle and Thai noodle were both full of flavor!! Excellent!!
I was disappointed with my last experience with Silk Elephant last night. We placed a delivery order that was incorrect when we received it. No big deal, mistakes happen. We called them to get it resolved and got referred to DoorDash. Ok, I understand that we paid through them so we have to resolve through them. However all DoorDash can do is refund the purchase but not reorder. When we called to place the replacement order the girl was rude about us making another order so close to closing time. We never received an apology for the situation. I understand mistakes happen but as a local business wouldn’t your staff try and make it right when they made a mistake? Instead we were met with annoyance. Disappointed 😔
Service wasn't the greatest for as slow as they were, but the food was phenomenal.
It's an upscale restaurant with the average plate price of $15. No refills on drinks and canned soda. We had the chicken fried rice which was really good. Extremely clean and very beautiful inside the waitress was very kind.
Service is sub par.
Food is always delicious and is made quickly. This is one of our absolute favorite places to grab dinner. Only occasional frustration is spicy levels aren’t 100% consistent but you can get spice on the side and add it to your own desires
Both entrees were wrong and when the restaurant was called I was told I could come back to exchange one meal but that was the only sort of compensation. We spent $36 on two basic entrees that were made incorrectly. I was then told that I was in the wrong when calling, however, I know what I hand selected online. I was very nice when explaining the issue and met with zero customer service. In the F&B industry (which I am a part of) you take care of your people; this sham of a place does not. If you’re looking for a good restaurant, I’d suggest McDonald’s before the Silk Elephant.
The place has a nice ambience. That's where it ended for us!
Limited vegetarian options since they pre-cook most of the food with fish sauces (that is what we were told). They couldn't customize certain dishes because their computer system doesn't allow them to. This was the first time I experienced that technology overrules customer dietary preferences. We ended up taking our business some where else.
I took my husband and my daughter here for my husband birthday. The waiter(ess) was very attentive and extremely nice. We had several questions about the menu items since this was our first time eating there. The portions were very generous. The appetizers were quite possibly the very best pot stickers and crab Rangoon I've ever ate! All the food was delivered in a timely manner and was extremely fresh and piping hot. We had Italian sodas with boba, my husband had a bottle of Saki. The meals and drinks were absolutely delicious. If you want a great meal in a super spotlessly clean place that's worth the money have a date at the Silk Elephant.
Great food, fast, friendly. Good atmosphere
Food was so yummy, but Staff were a little bit rude
The place was spotless. Only a few diners after 1pm.
I ordered the tofu fried rice lunch portion. It was a simple dish, but the chef did great with that browning (but not burnt) from stir-frying aggressively at a high temperature in a wok. I do not have such a large stove at home to recreate that unique flavor.
I will visit them again for sure.
Great food that was ready so fast! Came in for lunch and there was some nice jazz playing. There's space outside for patio seating as well. I come here for take out pretty frequently but this was my first time dining in, and it was great
Went here today for lunch. They close at 2. We arrived at 1:20 and was asked if we would be able to finish our food by 2pm. I said sure thinking to myself it would depend on how fast they brought our food as the only other time I ate there the service slow and terrible but I like the food. Our third person, who was parking the car arrived as soon as we were sat. We already knew what we wanted to order. Our third person stated they didn’t want to be rushed eating. We said fine we said we will just order to go. 15 minutes later our waitress came over finally, while the waiter who sat use started to serve a table of at least 6 people. We asked her if we could order to go seen the kitchen was closing soon. She said sure and asked what we wanted. As soon as I said I wanted soup she then stated she would have to speak to the manager if she can do a to go order since we were sitting at a table. Not sure what happened in the 30 second from ordering soup, that we could order to go and now we couldn’t. As we got up and left the table there was still being served food. I would like to know if you have them the 15-20 minutes to scarf down their food before kicking them out or were they allowed to stay and enjoy their meal? I work food service I really try not to go to a restaurant that close to close. However if you had better service we could have at least gotten it to go. You close at 2 but you should say the kitchen is closed at 1:30. We went down the road, spent around $70 and tipped about 30%. I won’t be back nor will one of the other persons I was with. I know one will because she doesn’t like to drive and you are close and convenient. There are far too many better Thai places for me to bother with the rudeness of you staff.
Super friendly staff and delicious dishes all around! Spicy curry we always love.
We had a small group that want to dine in, 8 total, the staff told us they could only split a check 4 ways, despite not being busy. So we asked if we could sit at 2 different tables and still split for each person, they said that was possible, but they would not sit both tables close to each other. we needed separate checks due to being here on business and needing separate checks for reimbursement. Unfortunately, as a result, we chose to go elsewhere, which lost the restaurant business of approx $150+.
Great food and always great service. Not a fan of the overall atmosphere, to open and warehouse like feel. They also need fountain drinks vs prepackaged. But overall food is great and worth a trip.
Small update: A couple of small issues the water they serve is typically warm unless you're fortunate enough to get a couple ice cubes out of a fresh pitcher. Also they only have canned pop, so no refills. Food is still excellent, hopefully they will survive as it's never very busy.
I really liked the food. The vegetables were fresh! Our food and wine were awesome. I would have given it 5 stars, but the interior feels and sounds like a gymnasium. It's hard to relax and enjoy your meal with kids and loud Karen's echoing. Great location for a stroll down the sidewalk for an ice cream or whisky after dinner.
I've become a Pad Thai addict because of this place. The medium heat is great - sometimes it is a bit much and sometimes it is right on the money - but tastes awesome either way.
We usually come here for lunch at least once a month. The food is delicious, but my husband was in the bathroom washing his hands and saw the cook come out of the stall after pooping and walked out without washing his hands. That’s disgusting and sad. It’s going to be really hard to come here again.
The hot spice level was perfect. Actually hot but not crazy
Great food and wonderful service
Clean resturaunt with knowledgeable staff and quick service. We came later on in the night and they made it clear they wanted us to know the time before they closed.
The food was good and incredibly fast!
I ordered green curry lunch special today. The bamboo shoot was a bit too hard but the overall taste is good! I wish the rice could have cooked better. It was a bit squishy. My partner had a Bangkok fried rice with veggie and tofu. The tofu and portion is pretty good but the rice was a bit too wet and squishy as well. But overall is tasty, and I would like to come back and try other dishes👍🏼
We also had a Thai tea with boba. The tea flavor is very good. I would love to have more boba😋
This was the best thai food i have had since I got back home from visiting Thailand. Great people, great service. I will be back!
My favorite dish is the pumpkin curry. The hot tea is wonderful on a cold day. Great appetizer menu and an extensive menu of Thai rice and noodle dishes, in addition to more traditionally Chinese-style meals. Generous portions - I am always able to take home half of my entree to enjoy the next day. The austere decor gives the restaurant a hip vibe.
Delicious food and great service, but the space feels large and echoey, especially on a slow Sunday night.
Good food...little bland
I had the angry tofu. It was very, very sweet, and I think it had dried basil instead of fresh. Definitely the most disappointing Thai food I've had. Maybe it was an off day.
Truly a 5/5 for me. The place was clean and sleek, the food was fantastic (honestly the best food I’ve had in a while), and the service was excellent.
Their drunken noodles are great if you like a little heat, but if you don’t, I’d suggest the garlic noodles instead (I tried both).
The milk tea (I had the brown sugar boba) is also excellent and on par with boba tea shops.
Will definitely go back.
Very nice space. They were playing jazz as we walked in for lunch. We ended up ordering khao soi, crab rangoons, and milk tea with brown sugar boba. The crab rangoons were what you'd expect. Very crispy outside; sweet creamy inside. Boba in milk tea tasted homemade. It was delicious! The thick khao soi curry was a bit too sweet for me. Very coconut-forward. Server was very friendly and the delivery of food to our table was unbelievably fast. Prices were a bit higher than expected but food was piping hot and met our expectations.
Atmosphere was sparse, lacked atmosphere. Staff was nice enough. Ordered Pad Thai... It was fine. I think they are so new they are working out the "kinks".... Will go back.
The peanut noodles were fragrant and cooked to perfection. The crispy cauliflower was delicious and hot. We tried a Thai tea with brown sugar Boba which was also great. Service was awesome.
I have been here many times and it’s always perfect. Fresh ingredients and very friendly staff one of my favorite places.
My friend took me here for lunch. First time for me and for Thai food. Staff greeted us right away. Though there weren't too many customers. My friend ordered the Orange chicken on rice noodles. I ordered the coconut fried rice with chicken. My friend's meal looked very good and he told me it was very good. Mine was disappointing, no coconut favor at all. It might have sat next to a coconut. Menu said, "In a coconut cream sauce." Well, the rice must have soaked it up. It was dry, and there was no favor. The chicken was okay. Carrots and broccoli and cashews saves the dish. The waitress did bring me some sweet and sour sauce. Which helped. I would go back and try a different dish. Staff was very friendly, and the price was fair for the size of food we received. The restaurant is beautiful and clean.
Great food and they had our to go order done very quickly. I also like that they send a text when your order is ready for pick up.
We went here for date night and it was delightful. Service was great, food was delicious and it's beautifully designed inside.
We got crab rangoon, pad see ew and garlic noodles. All were fantastic. Generous portions as well!
Went here on a Friday evening around 5:30. We got right in as the place was only a little busy. They have happy hour until 6 (I think!) so we got the crab rangoons, which were good, then ordered the Pad See Ew and Pineapple Fried Rice. Only critique is I wish the rangoons were made with real crab and not imitation, but they were still tasty. All of our food came out super fast and hot. We were in and out of there in less than 45 mins. We will be back!
PSA: Their medium level of spicy is borderline super hot! Just a fair warning to anyone who isn't prepared for that much spice.
The service was fast, food was tasty!
Friendly staff and great food! I will definitely be back
Nice outdoor seating and happy hour specials
Even though I rated both food and service 5 stars, I give an overall 4 star rating because I was charged for a second glass of ice tea--at $5 per glass.
Great Food with large Portions! Love the roomy space the restaurant is in too! Great staff who are very kind and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place for a new try!
Great flavor and large portions. 👌
Great food, great vibe! Stop in and have a nice dinner! The four of us really enjoyed our meal (2 locals, 2 visiting). The service was super friendly even though it was only one guy working the floor! Shout out Kenny! Not too busy on a Tuesday night, but a lot of people were doing take out. Definitely stop in and support this place. We were just visiting the area for a week but man, wish we could’ve ate there more!
This restaurant is a must try in Ankeny. The space design is beautiful so is great for a good night out with friends or family. Customer service is on point. Food is always delicious and flavorful.
Fantastic food, friendly staff, and cool atmosphere. The peanut curry is dynamite.
Food is outstanding every time I try something new. Love this place!!
Good Ambiance and nice place to dine in with family and friends. We ordered Yellow curry and spicy fried rice with chicken. Yellow curry was good taste and finished but spicy fried rice with chicken is not good &smells something odd hence got that Togo. However service was good and they are ok to replace.
Love love love Silk Elephant it's a family favorite for all things Asian food mmm mmm mmm!! Best in the metro!!
Wonderful experience! Staff was amazing and accommodating. Food was spectacular. Will be going back! Such a great, new space for Ankeny.
Good quantity thai food
Service could be better though
Highly recommended! The atmosphere, service and food were amazing!
I’ve been here twice and will not return. Worst pad Thai I’ve ever had. I could make better and I’m not the best with Thai cooking. No need to complain as they dont care. They need a new makeover with their food to survive.
Oh my god! Everything was amazing. And Hunter is an awesome server.
Great food good service
Silk Elephant is new to Ankeny. The restaurant has an open concept with tables and booth seating and is spacious. The decor is very tasteful and modern…. The food is ….addicting. My family and friends have made this our go to for Thai. Service is friendly and happy. They sometimes seem short in wait staff however when in order to go it’s ready in less than 15 minutes.
P.S. give the hot tea a try. It’s a delight and unique flavor.
Love the food. One of my favorite lunch spots.
Cool new place in Prairie Trail. Good food, good atmosphere and good service.
Good food, good portions, decent price, great atmosphere. I enjoyed my lunch here, will be coming back.
I have been to Silk Elephant several times now - for both dine in and take out - and have had a wonderful experience each time. Collectively I have tried the drunken noodles, pad see ew, Thai noodles, garlic noodles, and several of their boba teas, and all were delicious. They have lots of options for making dishes vegetarian and customizing spice levels. The average cost of a dish there is about $13-$15. The venue is lovely (very sleek and modern) and the service is terrific; last time I ate there my food was on the table 5 minutes after ordering. This is one of my favorite Ankeny spots now.
1st time here... nice place when we went it was early so not too many people for dinner. Nice menu ... nothing too fancy.
Large selection of curries and other Thai cuisine. The only downside is it's a big barn so it's not a great place for a quiet conversation.
Great food! Friendly! Awesome experience. So happy to have a delicious Thai restaurant in Ankeny that also can speak to vegan options to easily. My first question was what dishes are or can be made vegan. And the person I was speaking with was so informed and could tell me immediately. I would love a) the menu to reflect vegan or vegan by request and b) even more vegan options but the pumpkin curry and coconut fried rice were both so delicious and so well made. We will be back!
Very nice!
The peanut chicken and the coconut chicken soup was so delicious!!!! I'm a truck driver and I eat food from all over the US. But this is hands down the best Thai I've ever had.
Overall a good experience. Food was pleasantly spicy and fried tofu was great. Veggies in the curry and stir fry were pleasantly crunchy. Two complaints about the food: 1) Peanut curry was too sweet for our tastes 2) Drunken Noodles (pad Kee mao) were stir fried with pesto and in my opinion this detracts from the standard flavor. Also rice noodles weren't wide and not as chewy as they could be.
Really great place. I got take out.
Awesome curry. I had the Elephant curry. It was delicious.
The service was thoughtful and great also!!
Delicious. Calm atmosphere
I tried Silk Elephant for dinner recently and was very impressed! It’s completely on the other side of town for me so I’ve been dragging my feet to try it. My husband and I are huge avocado curry fans at Cool Basil in WDM but rarely get out that way. I have to say if you are also a fan but are in Ankeny this is pretty spot on. We got the veggie version and it was packed full of all kinds of veggies and plenty of avocado. They did not skimp. There was enough for me to make 3 meals out of it with making myself additional rice.
We also ordered the egg rolls and peanut noodles. The egg rolls were amazing. The sauce that came with was perfect. I’m not sure if it was specifically a sweet and sour sauce or some other sauce but it was amazing.
My only teeny tiny complaint is with the peanut noodles. There was not enough peanut sauce to cover the noodles. The noodles underneath were sauce less and the sauce on top was already stuck to the noodles and could not be mixed. If I were dining in house I’d have just asked for more. If you plan to order a noodle dish to go I’d ask for extra sauce on the side just to be safe.
Please excuse the photos as I was mostly through eating when I remembered to take them. They aren’t super pretty but I promise the food was delicious.
10/10 would recommend this place to everyone. They also do a really good job accommodating allergies. I have an egg allergy and was easily any to check a box that said no egg on the online order form to exclude it from our meals. Please check out this place if you love Thai food and are in the Ankeny area.
The atmosphere, food and service matched: fresh, fabulous and delicious! I can't wait to try Silk Elephant again just to make sure it was as good as believ.. I hope I wasn't dreaming because it was a great dining experience.
I love their ambience, service, very modern, elegant and cozy. The food needs some improvement for authenticity but overall I think they deserve 5 stars. Bobas are great!
We'll be back! The menu had a variety of options and we had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. The building is neat, but maybe a tad too spacious. Service was stellar -- Kenny is the best!
Great service, good food, brings meals out quickly.
Downside is it’s very pricey. I’d say each entree is about $3-4 too expensive. I’m sure their lease is expensive and they have a lot of square footage.
If they fixed their prices we’d go there a couple times a month vs once every 3-4 months as we do now.
Super friendly staff. Food is so fresh. Always have to get a Thai Iced Tea.
Holy smokes this place is amazing!!!
It is so good! Friends and family I have brought there have all raved. The ingredients are very fresh, lots of options, extremely friendly serving, and a great atmosphere. Well done.
Our food had great flavor. I would recommend milk tea with boba.
Excellent in every way!
Great service. Nice variety of choices. Generous servings. Choice of spice level. We chose medium, and it was just right for us. Food was presented attractively, and it tasted as good as it looked. We'll be back. Forgot to take any photos!
Tried it for the first time via Uber eats and was very pleased. Nice and hot, good portions, and very flavorful. Tried the Angry Elephant, Drunken Noodle, Egg Rolls, and Dynamite Shrimp and each meal was very good. Would definitely recommend and will be ordering again.
Nice atmosphere, good flavor, and the time from ordering to food to table is so short!
Delicious food, fantastic space. Big fan of this place. The Panang Curry was fantastic. Garlic Fried Rice is incredible. Went with 7 people and every single dish was super flavorful
Food was great but they would not split the check so not convenient for large groups. Service was adequate.
Excellent service and great food. Can't wait to go back to try more of the menu. I have the Massaman Curry Chicken, no spice. Definitely trying, at least, the mild next time.
The food here is exceptional, the menu is impressive, and the service is attentive and kind.
Amazing like always!
Had drunken noodles and it didn't have much flavor. The noodles aren't like the traditional fresh noodles but the long dry noodles. The Thai basil is chopped or crushed instead of the full leaves, so it makes it hard to taste the flavor. The onions and bell peppers are cut so big that it's awkward to eat. The dish tasted ok on its own and didn't taste flavorful like real drunken noodles. The dish seems to be Americanized rather than be authentic flavor.
This was a great restaurant! There are plenty vegan options. Service was great and attentive. We will definitely come back!
