Local chain featuring quick-serve pan-Asian favorites in an open, bright space with limited seating.
Wonton soup & beef noodle soup were so delicious I already want to go back 😭😭 it's getting cold, so it's the BEST spot to get a nice warm noodle soup (highly rec the wonton soup) !! Their BBQ pork Chinese style fried rice and spring rolls were also yummy!!! 100% new favorite spot, we'll be back soon 💜💜
I’ve been wanting to come to Penny’s for a while since I’m always in the area. With a hankering for some noodles, I finally made my way over. I got the spicy sesame ramen. It was a little spicy without being overwhelming. The portion size was large and prices were fair. The outdoor seating was also lovely for an early fall night. I hope to be back again in the future.
No frills, small, friendly Asian cafe with great food at a reasonable price. My wife and I had the wonton soup and it was delicious. It comes in a rather large bowl -- I was able to eat the entire meal, but my wife took half of her meal home. Service was attentive and friendly. This is a great spot if you're looking for a good, quiet meal that is just steps from the Wrigleyville party zone.
All-time great Thai restaurant for big portion-sizes and lots of vegetables. Noticeably fresher and less oily than some other similar restaurants in the area.
It really tastes like everything from the spring rolls to the marinated tofu is prepared carefully and with a unique, in-house style. Highly recommend the fried veggie spring rolls. The stir-fried tofu for $7 is also imo one of the best deals around. Their soups are also soo flavorful! Lots of herbs.
Honestly, the flavors were pretty disappointing. The wonton soup tasted watered down and lacked nuances, the pork BBQ lacked flavor, and the wonton itself was dense and overly peppery. The only good thing I enjoyed was the Chinese broccoli. The "Tonkotsu" ramen was slightly better but still lacked depth in its flavor and tasted too strongly of sesame oil.
This is a lovely neighborhood spot in a great location with friendly service. However, the food's flavor leaves a lot to be desired.
Cozy little shop, we've passed so many times and said we should try and finally went in and it did not disappoint. Delicious food, good portions, lots of options, and very quick. Highly recommend the spicy basil, we added beef and it was super tasty! Also really liked chicken pad Thai, gyoza, and tom kha kai soup. Will definitely be back and be ordering takeout from here in future too!
Wow! Seriously, this place never disappoints. My boyfriend and I frequently take out from Penny’s and every single time, they are so accommodating for my severe peanut allergy. The quality, amount, and the taste of the food is top notch. The owner is so kind and awesome! She is running an amazing business. You have to check out Penny’s Noodle shop! I can not recommend them enough
I love coming for a casual weekday dinner with friends. It’s affordable and good food. I do not recommend the ramen but I love the pad see ew!
SO SO GOOD! Such a neighborhood gem! I highly recommend you try eating in because it’s a great vibe. Food is 10/10

Food was so bland and lacked any flavor. Such a shame too because I was expecting it to be better especially for the price!
First off, I have to say the food was amazing. The only downfall with this was the way our server treated me and my significant other. We were trying to see if there was any add ons that we could do with our rice but we were cut off middle conversation. We tried to ask for cokes but, our server clearly didn't want to take our order and was just getting ready to leave and go back to her conversation with the other servers. When the food came it was excellent until I asked for chopsticks and when she returned, she threw the damn chopsticks at me. What type of human being throws items asks upon them towards their customers? It's literally your job to SERVE the customer to make the experience memorable for the customer. If you want the full and lovely experience I don't recommend tipping since they can ruin your experience. Just take it to go online and save yourself the trouble.
Tried the Vietnamese spring rolls, the chicken wings, Vietnamese coffee, and the chicken pad Thai all which were so delicious. The staff is very welcoming and service was fast! Would definitely return!
Best Chicken Lad Nar ever. Love this place. Been going here since I was 4 years old.
The gluten free pad thai here is amazing. It has an umami wok hei flavor and it is not overly saucy as a lot of other pad thai’s are.
Great food and quick and excellent service. Glad Penny's is back
Really cozy and great food! Total winner for bringing a friend or two! Great diverse menu as well!
The bbq pork noodles and wonton noodles are so delicious! They were also very accommodating for our large group even though they were crowded. Highly recommend
Yes! More restaurants like this please! Love love love ❤️
Grew up going to the location in wicker park, visit this location now and it's just as great. Every trip back we come here :) great spot!
Love Penny's! It's by far our favorite place in the area. We get delivery or take out multiple times a week most weeks. Some favorites are the crispy rolls, chicken satay, tom yum, Thai fried rice, basil fried rice, and pad se ew (so good with crispy noodles!). Their portion sizes are more than fair for the price and we usually have food leftover. Highly recommend trying Penny's if you haven't.
Food was fantastic as always but the server named Patty working today at 12/1pm was very very rude. Does not greet customers, throws the check on the table and completely ignored me.
I will definitely come for the amazing food, just not when she’s working.
I placed an order a few weeks ago. Used to love this place but it was awful! Every dish was over cooked. Noodles were like plastic. Never again.
Best chicken rice soup
The absolute best Pad Thai, that I ever tasted...
I never write reviews but the flavor was so bland and overall a total disappointment. After walking by this place for many years I was excited to try it and will never go back.
Has been a Thai spot staple in my household for YEARS. Grew up down the street from their Oak Park location, and currently live a stones throw away from their lakeview location. Never ever disappoints, love the staff and consistency in quality.

My favorite thai place in the city! Conveniently located here in Lakeview. Large portions and amazing flavor!
Fast and friendly service. The spicy sesame ramen was delicious!

Really cute spot with friendly service. If you sit outside it can get noisy with the train above, but inside and outside are cute. BYOB if that is your vibe.
Wonton soup & beef noodle soup were so delicious I already want to go back 😭😭 it's getting cold, so it's the BEST spot to get a nice warm noodle soup (highly rec the wonton soup) !! Everything is good except for the food, which is kind of the main point of a restaurant. Staff is great, restaurant is charming. But the food... We had the BBQ pork soup and wonton soup. They lack flavor entirely. It isn't bad, but it's certainly not good. Edible. The wontons are overly peppery and sausagey, like Italian beef? The broth is lacking anything to make it stand out. It's odd choices all around. It reminds me of Furious Spoon, before they drove themselves out of business.
Amazing
Consistently good and affordable, albeit unadventurous
The Lad Nar is the best meal I have had in a very long time!
Terrible service, tasteless food
very casual, excellent food and large quantities
Haven’t been there in a while and decided to try it again. Food was terrible. Basil chicken came with noodles as in spaghetti not rice and was soupy. Pad se eu was bland and over cooked. Crispy rolls were noodles in an egg roll. Gyoza greasy and burnt. Waste of $45.70 and not going back.
For the portions you're getting you're being ripped off. They used to be good, but now I'm not sure.
Gluten free options
Fast service
Consistent and reliable
Tasty and not oily
So lucky to live so close to this amazing Thai restaurant, if I lived further, it would be so sad. Penny noodles has been my favorite Thai restaurant restaurant since I was a child. I really do love the way the flavor of the food has never changed. In fact it only improved! Too, bad I can only rate a five ⭐️ because I definitely would give them a 💯/ 💯!
This place used to be so good but It was awful this visit
My cousin and his friend were in town visiting from Washington. My cousin’s favorite cuisine is Thai. I Used to go here back when there were more locations and it was delicious then so I suggested it This smaller location I believe is the last one left. Small little spot under the L
Everything was so bland. My cousins's friend ordered the red curry. My cousin and I ordered the chicken pad Thai.
There were literally four tiny pieces of chicken in my whole pad Thai dish.I should’ve said something. It was so upsetting instead of doing the right thing and sending everything back we didn't say anything and even took it to go. I was embarrassed and didn’t want to in front of out of town guests but we were all displeased and I should have. We gave it away on the way home.
My Cousin wanted more salt or msg. To want more at an Asian restaurant is mind blowing.
The only thing that was good Was Thai ice tea and crab Rangoon. The server was good and attentive and asked us how everything was. I didn't want to deal with it and that's my fault for not telling her how terrible everything was but I was embarrassed 😳 and didn’t want to in front of out of town guests. We shouldn't have taken anything to go. We should've literally sent it back It was not worth it sadly, all that was left to take was noodles.
You fell off big time Penny's. Shame on yall for the amount of chicken to noodles sad to even have to give this rating but I do. I just started making chicken pad Thai I’ve made the dish a couple of times myself and though it’s a little laborious mine is 100 times better.
I will never be back.
Delicious food. Large variety to choose from. If you like Thai food this is a great place with good prices and a large menu.
Be careful! The online menu only specify spicy for some of the dishes... I got a Crazy Beef and the restaurant "forgot" to put the spicy sign on the online menu.. Got severe inflammation reaction on my mouth just for trying the food (I couldn't even eat the rice, spicy salsa too). It was quite an interesting story ending in the ER having a severe reaction on my tongue for spicy red pepper
tried this spot on a whim with a friend, and they did not disappoint. they offer a variety of noodle and rice dishes at a decent price. the food was delicious. will definitely be coming back when i’m in the area
Great food!!! Great service! The outdoor seating was very nice.
Always great food. Ordered take out. Great service.
I had stopped by for dinner today with a date. For appetizers we ordered the gyoza and crab rangoon. Both were delicious, but the gyoza was my favorite. I had ordered a pad thai with shrimp, and it was one of the best I have had in awhile. Service was great and I liked the atmosphere. I would come here again. 5/5.
Ordered from pennys while working not even a block away spent 30.00. N they don't give you a fork.spoon.or napkins. Rice bland. I want be ordering from them again
I had not been in many years until yesterday as I had moved out of the neighborhood and didn't get down here as often. When I did live near by it was our go to place and ate here often as it was my favorite & was my comfort food. Yesterday's meal made me realize why I loved this place so much, the flavor is the best Thai food I have found anywhere in the city.
An institution. After decades, still the best rice noodle dishes anywhere. Hot pepper noodles were amazing.
Best Pad Thai in the City--no joke. I've tried dozens of other places.
I rarely reviews, but this place has the best spicy thai basil noodles you’ll ever get.
I have loved this restaurant since they were in bucktown/ Wicker park I am originally from Africa my boss used to order or dine in for all of us and I used to love the 5 pepper shrimp amazing it was, however when they moved to north side their 5 pepper shrimp doesn't taste or look the same except for the salad and rice but the shrimp isn't what it was then!!! However everything is amazing at this joint I love them
Best rolls in town!
Food is amazing, it has NEVER failed me.
What a delightful find! Such a charming spot, boasting an open kitchen and an extensive menu. We began with the chicken satay with that irresistible peanut sauce—I could almost drink it!
For my main course, I opted for the Hot Pepper Noodle dish with tofu, which had just the right level of spice. Being BYOB, we brought a couple of beers. Waiter was so attentive and brought us chilled glasses.
With great food, reasonable prices, and friendly service, Penny’s is definitely a hidden gem after a game at Wrigleyville.
I got the Shrimp soup, in vegetable brother with tomatoes and rice vermicelli noodles. I do not know how they managed to make a dish with absolutely no flavor (the shrimp, tomatoes, and noodles did not taste of ANYTHING. Just of warm). Like I’ve never had shrimp completely bleached of flavor. It didn’t even taste bad it’s tasted of nothing. The gyoza was pretty good. I had to dump so much soy sauce into my dish to make it taste if anything.
The chicken noodle soup and crab Rangoons were soooo good!
The owner was very nice.
Definitely a place to try if you're looking for real authentic thai
Great little noodle and rice spot. Cant go wrong with the pepper beef or bbq pork noodles!
My family and I have been going here for yrs. Love the food, especially the Chicken soup, Pad Thai, Satay! Great service too.
Very cozy asian-style noodle spot!
I ordered a beef pad thai for lunch. The food was good, but it wasn’t until I added fish sauce and chili at home where all the flavors came out and molded together! I wish I asked for the condiments in-person. The beef was more on the hard side though, I wish it was softer. The portion was bigger than I expected but was the perfect size. I would love to come back and try other noodle dishes on the menu.
In terms of service, I was greeted with smiles by the hostess doubling as a server as I walked in the door. Very attentive and very kind. She knows her customers very well. The food came out quick and I was able to get a good meal in while I was in-between classes.
The music was great it contributed to the ambiance. I loved the fact that I could also hear the wok sizzling in the background as they were cooking.
I stopped in this place for the first time today. I read the reviews and they were good. I was looking forward to what I ordered. I ordered crab Rangoon and Thai fried rice with shrimp. Sad to say I was disappointed. The crab Rangoon shell was different from any other crab Rangoon I've had and the crab had no taste. The rice was made spicy as I asked but I did not find the food tasty. Nice unique small place and very clean. Person who took my order was very nice. I won't be returning.
I ordered the pork pad Thai and it was absolutely awful. The flavors were non-existent and relied on soy sauce. But those cheap types. There was barely any meat on it and honestly I need a refund for this bogus.
Good 2nd dinner noodle spot. Charming, cozy, simple, but feels good, tastes good.
The hot sauce is amazing, really enhances the noodles.
Grew up going here. Still every time I visit the nostalgia hits different. This place is so good, I highly encourage you to give them a try.
Flavorless and precooked.
The waitress greeted us and took our order promptly, but the food was horrible. I didn’t even finish my meal. Not sure what has happened. I’ve been here before and it was fine, but not today. The chicken was dry and flavorless.
It was so bad I didn’t even finish my meal. The issue that bothered me the most was when I told the waitress she admitted that it did not look good, but still served it to me! She tried to make excuses and charged me anyway. I paid and left.
Never again for me!
Great eats that are super fresh and flavorful. Super fast service, and really affordable!
Amazing food and casual atmosphere. Been coming here since 1993 and the food hasn't changed a bit. Best tom yum soup in the city. Thai ravioli was outstanding. Delicious!!
Food was great as was the service.
Quick and friendly service, crab rangoon as appetizer was perfectly warm, crispy, and plenty of filling. Spicy ramen was delicious and plenty of food (had to take home). My gf got spicy basil + chicken which was also good and big portions. Definitely will be back!
Meals aren’t very substantial. I left hungry
The best chicken noodle soup in the city!!
Savory meals (including generous portions,) at reasonable prices.
The chicken lad nar was boring, it doesn't taste the same, the gravy is tasteless.
Great place to get noodles before the game.
Very fast service, beautiful patio, beautiful noodles.
Bussin, respectfully
Fun little noodle shop with pan Asian menu. Nice sauces and flavors. Seems like a nice place for comfort food. I had a Thai dish but was definitely flavored for the American palate. If I went again I would probably ask for some fish sauce or table space to make it have more flavor.
I know Penny! She’s retired now, but her food is wonderful! I have to get my Penny’s fix whenever I am in the neighborhood
I've been coming to Penny's for several years and I love this tiny, diner style Thai food place. The food always tastes fresh, with lots of fresh ingredients, but there is a certain "American-ized" quality to their food that makes me miss some of the bolder, more authentic Thai food flavors you can get elsewhere in Chicago. The food isn't very spicy (despite the warnings) and they've recently added some Japanese dishes to the menu, so I think they are trying a more broad appeal considering the location. The Egg Noodles w/ BBQ Pork is my favorite thing to order and don't forget the Thai Iced Coffee! All gripes aside, they definitely fill a void in the Wrigley culinary scene and I love their patio in the summertime. Their casual location in Wrigley with views of the new Belmont CTA flyover can't be beat.
Food is excellent and the prices are very reasonable
Came in on a Sunday and thought this place was really cute. Nice inside and outside seating. Service left something to be desired unfortunately; the waitress didn’t notice that I sat down for at least 10 minutes. I found the food a little bland and was confused as to why peanut sauce, which was the only thing that lent any flavor, would cost extra. It was overall OK, but there are better Thai options in the area.
I love coming to Penny's their food is delicious, and is a good portion, not greasy at all; their staff are really nice and polite, but their best 2 are Aree & Desi as soon as I walk in to the door they treat me like if I'm one of their family member, they great me with a smile and with an energy I don't find anywhere else.; every time I have a question regarding the menu they always answer it ( and sometimes i asked the same question more than once) but they have patient to answer them.
I recommend their chicken stay they sauce that comes with the chicken is soft & Pad Se Eu I just love those noodles.
Can’t go wrong with anything on this menu! It’s all sooooo good
Love this place delicious thia food! There are quite a few dishes it like. If you like noodles a little spicy try it you will like it. Also try the crispy eggrolls😋
The food here is excellent. The times I've gone there we have been served by Desi or Aree and they provide top notch customer service. They make you feel welcome and every question we have is thoroughly explained and they make amazing suggestions. Thanks to that we became regulars.
So good and yummy crunchy noodles are so yummy 😋
Possibly the most inviting storefront in the history of storefronts, especially in the depths of Chicago winter. Recommend pad see ew and gyoza. Love you Penny’s
Used to love this place but prices have been getting higher and portions have been getting smaller, just been going down hill. I understand cutting costs but when you rise the price and lower the quality and portion of the food then it’s a disaster.
I got the pepper beef and it has never been an issue , now this time the rice was on the bottom of the container and the beef (not even a fist full) was on top. Never had the rice and beef In the same container either. They gave me the crispy noodles but couldn’t put it on anything cause the pound of rice sucked up all the sauce.
Vietnamese spring rolls were all noodles and 1 slice of lettuce and carrot and they even started watering down their peanut sauce.
After paying almost $70 I would have hoped for better quality.
I wouldn’t order takeout from them anymore. 2 weeks ago I got a pad se iew to go and asked for crispy noodles, there were literally 7 noodles.
Tofu pad Thai had 8 pieces of tofu and no veggies anymore, no cabbage sprouts or cilantro
Dine in is fine if you have no other options, takeout is a no go anymore.
I’ve been coming here for 20+ years. Used to LOVE the diversey location, food was much more flavorful , this dinner was awfully bland. No amount of soy sauce or hot sauce can make it better.
Just ate there with my boyfriend and my boyfriend didn’t tip because our service wasn’t great our waitress patty, was rude seemed like she was having a off day only served us water once was quick to give our check and walk off saying thank you while we were still eating with no water in our cups I tried being polite saying thank you etc and she’d ignore me then has the nerve to try to demand my boyfriend to leave her a tip with her terrible service he wrote 0$ on the tip and she screamed something at him in a different language and was very hostile I feel this was very uncalled for and very unprofessional that is how you loose customers were obligated to tip bed service now ??
The kindest and hardest working people all delivering great food and a welcoming atmosphere after a Cub game. The best. Thank you
Hot pepper noodle. That's it. That's the dish.
Spicy sesame ramen 🍜 🔥 🔥 🔥
Really nice little spot under the train tracks between Belmont and Addison stops. I got gyozas and chicken noodle soup. Both were really delicious, and the soup portion was nice and big. Came out quick and hot. Chicken soup has a slightly sweet aftertaste which I really enjoyed. Staff was also very friendly too.
It's always the very best.
This is the Panda Express of Thai food. Clearly, whoever is working the kitchen doesn’t know how to cook in a wok, with noodle dishes are soggy with no char, and floating in sweet overwhelming sauces.
I love the big bowl of chicken or beef noodle soup! It’s incredible. One of our favorite places to eat when we go visit our college kid!
I have walked past this place many times when out in wrigleyville.. this day I decided to stop. I’m soooo glad I did! What a cute, energetic, fun space. The staff was friendly and the food was bursting with flavors. The space is small but cozy and the music is dance on this chilly evening. I decided on some chicken soup & some bBq pork. Both dishes where generous. If you are in the area, check this place out!!
I give it a 5⭐️
Jerry (the pigeon) gives it 5.5⭐️

cool little spot under the train.
the name and the wedge storefront initially attracted me to it, glad the food lived up to my expectations.
really a 4.5, predicting it’ll be updated to a 5 over the next few visits.
chicken satay, rangoon, hot pepper noodle, and pad se eu were all super tasty. looking forward to coming back to try the curry and other noodle dishes.
lovely service from our waiter as well.
update: 11 feb. 2023
updating to five stars after a few more visits.
great spot for quick and tasty noodles, and i'm really feeling the low-key chill old time diner vibes of the place under the train tracks.
service continues to be quick and very pleasant.
Super Yummy, food was wonderful, their spicy side dish to add to food was wonderful, and staff were very nice, building very clean.
Always great food. Consistent taste and flavors over the years...
There is not a lot of room inside. But the food and service makes up for it.
The food, ambience, and service are all very authentic. Finding a restaurant like this in Chicago with such reasonable prices is very rare and it’s a must try if you’re looking to try some real Thai food. They even try their best to accommodate for people with dietary restrictions such as vegan and vegetarian.
I ordered the veggie noddles with tofu. It was great!!! Small little place under the train... price was good.
Do yourself a favor and order the hot pepper noodles with chicken- extra crispy & the goyza. It’s so delicious and you’ll never find it better anywhere.
I can't believe they are back!! Yessss!!!! I am out of state but for Christmas and my Dad's heavenly 1yr anniversary, I am going to fly to Chicago just to go and treat myself to a beautiful brunch and dinner here! I used to wait till the doors open to get into this great spot! I Love their flare and the food is on point! Fire everytime! Yes this place is so good I am going to get me some even if I have to get on a plane too 😂 I Love it that much!
Have been coming to Pennys for years and years. Consistent fresh and tasty eats. Service pleasant and FAST. Always stop by when in the neighborhood.
We went in expecting a lot, but the flavors just weren’t there for us. It was bland, average food. I’m glad to see that’s not most people’s experiences.
Food was good. Parking could be an issue.
Reasonable prices and delicious food!
Delicious
Love the hot pepper noddles, halve crunchi halve soft just amazing
I’ve tried many different places with similar cuisine and non of them compares..I’ve been coming here for many years and their dishes are amazing.
Their chicken and tofu pad se ew is my favorite in the Chicago area. They put actual broccoli florettes in there. Not just the stem. Yum!
REALLY GOOD THANKS
Amazing good food and good prices
I’ve been going to Penny’s for 6 years, have compared many noodle joints during that time, and can safely say it has the best rice and noodle dishes around! I recommend the hot pepper noodle if you like some kick.
5/5! Been coming here for a few years and it is one of my fave noodle shops! Very flavorful and great texture, I could eat the Pad See Ew endlessly. Next time want to try with tofu instead of chicken. Love that they now have a side patio. $20-30 per person dine-in, though. But worth it!
