Thai classics & innovative house specialties in a chic, exposed-brick & earth-toned space.
Visited for dinner alone and sat at the bar. Cocktails were great, food was decent, but the service could have been a bit more welcoming.
Servers were very nice, but as I finished the cocktail and appetizer I had ordered to start, the waitstaff started asking if I wanted the bill before I had the chance to review the menu for my entree order.
Instead of feeling taken care of, it felt a bit like I was being rushed through my meal and to pay the bill so they could turn my spot over.
Rice serves up some classic Thai favorites in an urban chic space that emphasizes simplicity and warmth. Located in the 14th St corridor, Rice maintains the trendy, chic neighborhood vibe with its earth-toned interior and sleek, full-service bar. It can get pretty busy, so I’d recommend coming on the early-side to ensure you’re not sitting too close to any other loud patrons. The food is very good and they offer a nice array of options to pick from. They frequently have specials like a curry sampler. I’d recommend getting the Papaya salad with shrimp, Green curry with beef, and the Seafood basil. The presentation of food is tastefully done – simple and clean. The portion sizes are pretty good considering the prices. I strongly encourage you to look at the seasonal menu, so you can try some special foods. This is a great date night spot and wouldn’t be ideal for small children. There’s an outside patio with seating available for those nice weather days. They also have a small market at the entrance with lots of Thai cooking ware and trinkets.
I recently dined at Rice, a Thai restaurant in DC, and it was a delightful experience. The papaya salad with shrimp was perfectly spicy, and the chicken cashew dish, though excellent, could be even better with the addition of pineapple. While the service was nothing out of the ordinary, the food made up for it. I’d definitely recommend Rice and look forward to revisiting on my next trip to DC.
Amazing food, lovely service + ambiance. Great for a nice, but casual dinner out. Adding to my list of restaurants to take visitors too!
Great Thai food. It was really yummy and the staff was super nice and helpful. We had Happy Hour sushi for each $6 (spicy tuna roll and California roll). It was made freshly downstairs at the rice market. Cute little shop with Asian specialties. As entrees we ate chicken drunken noodles and spicy duck. Both were delicious. Probably one of the best drunken noodles I’ve ever had. Soooo good!!! Go support a local restaurant!
Best thai food in town (and I have tried almost all the thai places)! Incredible red and green curry with rice. As good as the food you have in Bangkok!

Great food and great service! There is also a cute market downstairs! Highly recommend and will be returning soon.
Appetizers werefl flavorless. Entree tasted like sugar and rubbery chicken. Service was…not good. I’d never come here again
Everything I've tried here has been delicious.
Delicious food and my favorite restaurant in DC. I recommend brussels sprouts and cashew chicken. Their margaritas are not bad as well
People with allergies or other dietary restrictions beware! I ordered the papaya pad thai, which was marked vegan. However, it came with bits of egg. Also, their vegan garden roll was served completely cold and hard, as if it was premade and straight from the refrigerator. Overall, I do not recommend.
After 10-15 minutes sitting at the bar waiving for the bartender and waitress, I literally had to ask if we need to pay extra for service.
Spicy duck was really good. Next time pad see ew
RICE - Been coming to this #1 Thai in the DMV since 2003 when they opened. Sak the visionary owner had a dream and totally put every detail in place from the location to decor to menu to staff and every intricate design motif. Pad Thai the best, any of the meats seafoods, vegetables, sides, sauces, spices and textures numero uno in my book and many would say the same thing. NUMBER ONE out of the over 150+ DMV Thai restaurants. EASILY. ❤️
The food is good. The service could be much better. The attitude must be improved. I got to RICE to grab my order wanted to lock my scooter for getting the order from inside and some stuff from the store but the guy working there was trying to tell me aggressively to leave but when i told him that i order he changed his attitude brought out the food and never said sorry for the attitude. Never made it to the store.

Great food, great service!
It’s a no for me. Not a great first impression and it was only Happy Hour. I’ve had better sushi from Giant. HH Marg left me wanting, just no flavor or anything or salt, and I had to ask twice for it. Good luck!
Amazing drunken noodles
The food here is sooooo good!! It’s at a great price point too. Reservations are helpful but we were able to walk in and only wait 5-10 minutes for our party of 5. I’m already thinking of when I can go back. Pad-see-ew was delicious!
Great service and very good food 🙂
This place has become incredibly hit or miss. You can order a menu item three time and get three completely different dishes when you pick up. I just ordered what was my favorite and got noodles in grey dish water. Not the first time this has happened. This used to be a fantastic neighborhood gem and it’s really slipped into a must-miss.
Nice, fresh sushi and great customer service!
Always delicious!
freshest sushi in dc!!!
So delicious!!

Good Thai food
Really impressed with the food here. Mix of Thai and Japanese. The servings are very large, great value.
Service was great and friendly. Restaurant seems renovated? Nice atmosphere.
Went alone and sat at the bar. Great vibes: music was at a perfect volume, lighting created a great environment and staff were nice and helpful.
Food was tasty and came out quick. Perfect for a quick bite (lunch or dinner), a first date or even a nice meal to catch up with friends.
Fresh sushi and tasty soup. Just a little too pricey for the portions.
Great food and nice service
I love the market downstairs, but the restaurant is a headache. Food came cold and staff acted inconvenienced to rectify. Server forgot parts of the order. Menu has many “vegan” options but they nearly all contain shrimp paste. (I’m not vegan but am allergic to shellfish and found this false advertising very alarming.) Difficult to work with staff to understand which dishes contain which ingredients. Very unpleasant experience for my whole party, sad to say.
Best Pad Thai I have ever had! Hands down. And great service.
We ordered the green curry along with the chicken Pad Thai and it was outstanding. The flavor of the curry was delicious, and the Pad Thai was perfect. Highly recommend checking this place out.
Very tasty Thai place. Quite informal with friendly service and great food
Stellar customer experience and high end, authentic Thai. Fantastic new market in basement as well. Owners really know how to ensure your time with them is special. Cannot recommend highly enough. A must for when you need to get your Thai game on!
Hidden Jam. The food is absolutely delish. The pad Thai is amazing.
One of my favorite local spots! The food is delicious and the staff is always gracious and kind. The red curry with chicken is perfection. I do hope they bring back the lunch size portions.
Be sure to check out the Asian market downstairs.
Best Thai in DC right now.
Loved this restaurant, I got the fried rice with beef. Was the best fried rice I’ve had in a while. I also got this citrus drink that I can’t quite remember the name of. The staff was super friendly and so nice. Checked out the little market underneath the restaurant as well. Was super nice and clean, a bunch of neat little finds down there for an asian market. Definitely will be coming back!
Best Thai food in the area: Rice is both delicious and adorable. The pad thai and the panang curry are great. Incredible sushi happy hour, too, even on the weekends!
decent restaurant.
Classic, creative, fresh, and delicious. Everything we’ve had here has just been so good
We ordered take out by phone. They did not start preparing our order until we showed up, and it took twice as long as they estimated to prepare. I ordered the Crispy Red Snapper Filet with spicy crispy lemongrass salad. They left the lemongrass salad out of our bag, which I didn't realize until we were too far away to come back. The snapper was probably good, but by itself was bland and I was unable to eat it. The Spicy Duck was served with unlisted vegetables in case people with allergies want to know. The menu does not list things accurately. I am sure this would be a great option if you dine in and are not in a hurry and don't have allergy concerns. Otherwise I'd say skip it.
My fave pick for Thai in DC.
Avoid the curry and the pumpkin chicken unless you like your food like a salt lick. It was the worst Thai food me and my friend have ever had.
Fantastic green curry with chicken.
The waiters are a bit reserved, apart from that we have never eaten such good Asian food before, although we often eat Asian food in Berlin.
Fantastic taste experience. Fair prices, absolutely recommendable.
Worst experience not my 1st time there but definitely my last. I walk in the guy looks at me but doesn't say a word. Min later a guy walks in and the waiter walks right up says hi to him. 🤔🤦♀️ The customer pays him no mind glanced at the menu and left. Then the waiter wants to acknowledge me. Still ordered my food again not my 1st time there. When my food comes check my bag no eating utensils! 🤦♀️ Then had the nerve to give me a receipt to write a tip. Oh he got a tip alright learning tip. Acknowledge the customer who walked in first. Especially if you want a tip! Nobody made you work there but you. FYI the tall skinny guy. The other guy with the glasses always great service.
Fantastic 10 years later. Lived down the street when they opened. Loved it. 10 years later while visiting DC, quality hasn’t changed.
great place to eat before the theater. happy hour until 6:30
We were walking in the area, and decided on trying out their food here. While there was a bit of a linguistic barrier, we were able to convey our dietary restrictions, and ordered the Basil Stir fry.
It was generous in portion, and tasted really good. We opted to sit outside, which was ideal given the weather that day.
All in all, a nice dining experience.
Loved the drunken noodles.
Great Thai food. It was really yummy and the staff was super nice and helpful. We had Happy Hour sushi for each $6 (spicy tuna roll and California roll). Just a gem of a restaurant. Some of the best sushi I’ve had in DC - great vibes, good prices, great service. 10/10
Delicious, fresh food, friendly staff, and an awesome market downstairs!
Really enjoyed my tofu pad see ew dining outdoors. My Thai iced tea was also delicious. The service was warm and prompt and I will definitely be coming back/trying take out soon!
Was in the middle of writing this review when the waiter came to the table beside me and asked them to leave while they were drinking their drinks. They were taken aback and startled by the comment as so was I who just witnessed him saying it. They were very nice about it unlike me who would have raised hell. I pay my money to eat here and you tell me to leave because you need my table for other guests. Food is ok but not at the expense of rudeness. The crispy red snapper is good and I enjoyed the squid legs!!!
The male manager (owner?) is rude and hostile. He was cruel to my friend. He doesn't respect disabled people and no doubt is bigoted in other ways. Such a pathetic way to live your life and run a business. Pass.
I had a very negative experience at this restaurant. I use a walker which I placed behind my chair when I sat down. There was plenty of room to walk around my walker, but a staff member (perhaps the manager) very rudely told me I needed to move it. His tone was disrespectful and completely inappropriate. The food is good, but they need to treat disabled people with respect to earn my recommendation. I will not be returning.
I have never been treated so rudely in a restaurant before. We had just finished our dinner and received our checks. We were sitting there having a nice conversation, enjoying our drinks, and had only been in the restaurant 50 minutes total. Then the manager came over and told us to leave because other people needed our table. He was extremely rude to us. There were clearly other tables available, but said he did not want to seat two people at tables for four. The food was adequate, but nothing special. Clearly no respect, consideration, or appreciation for people dining there. I will not return to this restaurant after being treated so horribly. Truly awful.
Excelente pad Thai, el Crispy chicken con pineapples estuvo bueno y precios accesibles.
Absolutely delicious. Nice selection of authentic dishes at very reasonable prices. There is also a very nice bar top that gives the restaurant a modern feel. I appreciated the minimalist decor and overall atmosphere. The food was fresh, tasty, and came out quickly. Service was also above average. Definitely recommend checking them out.
Best Thai restaurant at this price point in DC. Best pad thai I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a LOT of pad thai) and the curries are incredible. Good portion sizes, very fresh and high quality ingredients, fast service. Plus the Asian market downstairs is great!
I’ve lived in the neighborhood for almost 20 years and Rice has been one of the best parts of living here. I was pretty upset when their sister restaurant DC Noodle closed, which was only one block from where I live. Tonight I ventured a few extra blocks and was reminded of how much I love Rice, too.
It’s delicious, the place is very cool, and now there’s a fantastic Asian market in the basement where I can stock up on things I can’t buy at regular markets in the area. The staff has always been professional and friendly to me. Tonight I had red curry and the fried snapper filet. The fish was a little over cooked but the sauce is so good! The red curry is reliable. The green tea margarita was tasty too.
Love this place!! My husband and I have this delivered almost weekly. We love the pad Thai and the service is top notch. Delivery is quick. I have a gluten allergy and they are always so careful with my order, I never have a reaction. Out of the like 50 times we ordered there one time they forgot to write which order was gf, when I notified them they quickly brought me a replacement.
They are the best of the best! Thank you Rice!
Great appetizers: Seaweed salad, brussel sprouts. Sushi was also good.
Brilliant food. We enjoyed every bit. The ambience was also excellent. I particularly enjoyed the fried tofu with ginger sauce.
The chicken looked weird and bland
Delicious food and affordable (for the area). I totally recommend if you're looking for Thai food. Saw many repeat customers getting take out too which tells me locals come here (usually a good sign).
I absolutely love Rice! It’s my favorite neighborhood gem. It’s consistently delicious, great value for your money, and the staff is very friendly. I recommend the Pad Thai, cashew chicken, green and panang curries, drunken noodles, and much more. I’ve tried nearly everything. Don’t miss the Brussels sprouts with a sauce that is so good, it’s slurpable.
I’ve had many meals for birthdays, friend reunions, and family visits at Rice. Anyone who knows me, DC friends and visitors alike, have all been there because I can’t help but suggest it.
They also have a fantastic Asian store down below for anyone who is interested in cooking Asian food.
Try Rice, you’ll love it too!
Food and service were superb!
Fresh, delicious, dined outdoors.
Best happy hour!
I dont understand the 4 stars. Nice staff and down to earth decor. The food was kind of ordinary. I had two meals. Happy hour appetizer of Miso soup was large but lacked flavor as did the salmon avocado roll. The Thai style post dumplings were excellent. Next night with guest. The squid was way way way overcooked and like a rubber band. The green curry was OK but no depth to the sauce. PRICE is medium so the value was there. The Happy hour price food items are actually cheap. good value and OK food.
Best Pad Thai I’ve had in 15 years! Great happy hour specials too - and tasty wine. Can’t wait to return.
Excellent in every way. The food was fresh and the flavors were authentic. Top rate service. Visit the market downstairs. It’s an added treat.
I don’t why this place has a 4.4 since the flavors are on point. Highly recommend Pad Thai and Yellow curry.
Fantastic panang curry and sushi! Great prices! Cool market downstairs.
Delicious chicken curry over brown rice with plum tea. Friendly, clean, efficient, nourishing.
Best drunken noodles ever! And i love the vegetable soup too. I have visited a few times. It might be empty because of Covid but the food is on point!
No one else was at the restaurant, food was average. About half of the menu is labeled as spicy. Vegetarian options (tofu as protein for any meal). Street parking.
Great food!
Rice Restaurant may be the best Thai restaurant I’ve ever eaten at! The food was absolutely excellent and the staff are great. I highly recommend Rice Restaurant for lunch or dinner! You will not be disappointed!!!
Delicious Tom Kha and flexible for vegetarian diets! Will be coming back/ordering takeout!
Great authentic Thai food, with friendly staff and a reasonable price for DC. Highly recommend!
Nice outside seating good food
Incredible Thai restaurant in DC. Highly suggest eating here if in the area. Very nice staff and fantastic food.
Best place ever! They have everything you need plus fresh hot meals for under $10
One of the best Thai restaurants in the DMV! Love that they offer papaya noodles as an option. The pumpkin empanadas are always ordered. Larb gai is definitely a favorite as well as the panang curry. Never order anything from here that is didn't enjoy. Service is fantastic. Sit down or take out, doesn't matter, you won't be disappointed.
One of the best Asian restaurants and markets in the area! They have a huge variety of food in the upstairs restaurant, as well as tons of great grab-and-go options downstairs. The downstairs market is incredible, with a huge selection of products (including beer and wine).
The best part of this place though is the incredibly friendly staff. I can’t wait to come back, and am glad I live so close by!
All of the food was excellent and quickly served- we ordered pad thai (uniquely served with a thin layer of scrambled egg on top), panang curry, larb gai (so spicy but good), and thai iced tea. They were also taking COVID precautions seriously and had an additional outdoor seating area sectioned off in a few parking spaces, where the tables were spaced out, staff wore masks, and served one time use utensils and cups.
We'll definitely be back!
Favorite Thai in DC. Amazing pad see ew, drunken noodles, and curries. Definitely recommend.
Amazing pad Thai and pad see ew! One of my favorite Thai places in DC!
The food was delicious and.the service was excellent. Definitely someplace you need to visit.
The best Thai food in Dc. We order it almost every week.
Excellent Thai food! Great flavor, friendly staff, fast service. I'll definitely be back!
Some dishes lacking the pizazz of yesteryear.
I loved the crispy red snapper salad dish. Came with sticky rice.
The food was good enough, but because of the service I give it a two star rating.
Firstly having a server ask you how long have you been in American for ,just because they feel entitled on demanding how much tip they should get is not any type of experience anyone should get.
We got there and did not get any service that was even close enough to say it was a good restaurant experience overall!..the food made the experience good, but not the service.
Relic of the past
Delicious food! Excellent GF menu!!
Hands down one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in DC. The staff and owner are always super nice, the food is always great, and the atmosphere is just fun.
Extremely attentive and wonderful staff. I will definitely be back in the future.
Food was ok, but I had the duck and it was a bit chewy
Greeted by the what looked like the owner or manager as if I was an inconvenience. Food was very average considering how well reviewed this place is.
This restaurant is one of the best kept secrets of 14th Street, most likely due to its humble exterior appearance. As soon as you enter, you're greeted by a cozy, modern atmosphere. The food is seriously incredible. It's my favorite Thai place in DC, and I go here a couple times a month. Flavors and quality are incredible, and pricing is about on par with the area. If you love Thai food, definitely give this place a try!
Great service and fantastic flavors! The pad thai was extremely light and bursting with flavors.
Delicious Thai food in a cosy atmosphere. The dinner menu has many vegetarian options (including curries, spring rolls, soups, noodles, etc). Friendly and attentive staff; served us quickly and suggested their best options. Fresh vegetarian spring rolls were huge and delicious!
Food was pretty good
A terrific place for good Thai food. The rice is amazing and very cleverly flavored. A good mix of traditional and new age dishes. I highly recommend the crispy red snapper. Minus one star because the takeout area detracts from the overall ambiance and can be distracting.
This is my second visit to RICE, my last visit was years ago. It’s changed a lot since the first time. It’s mostly Thai dishes. The pad Thai is very good, with a thin layer of scrambled egg over the whole dish. I also liked the pumpkin empanada (!) a lot - that’s not Thai, but the empanada is very light and about as well prepared as an empanada can be, I think. There aren’t as many vegetarian dishes as I’d like, but this is a good go-to place for those regular Thai dishes that I can eat over and over again. The service was very good, and the outdoor seating area is nice on a good late summer night.
Very tasty Thai food. A lot of flavor. Good portions and prices. Nice ambiance. I wish this place a lot of customers.
Best Thai place
Small quaint restaurant with flavorful Thai food. Great customer service. Awesome ambiance.
Terrific food and service!
Buono
Ma il prezzo non vale il cibo
What makes RICE so good and unique is of course their green sticky rice that comes with many of their entrees. Go to is the panang curry. One of my favorites in all of DC.
Rice is a great restaurant for quality food. I usually call in my order for lunch a couple times a month and it is always great. The do offer lunch discounted prices. I recommend the Beef Kapow (slightly spicy and very tender beef.) The owner is a great guy and now knows me by name. They also offer outdoor space and a happy hour.
I'd highly recommend.
Good service but both me and my friend's dishes only had about 4 pieces of shrimp each (the only protein in the whole dish).
The worst place in Washington DC, worst customer servers. Very rude people. Do NOT go to this place, safe your night.
Goid food but waiter mixed up orders
