Pad see ew, green curry & other Thai dishes from mild to spicy on offer at an unpretentious choice.
Wow, what a hidden gem. Even more hidden due to the road construction. Very much worth getting to though. We tried the beef egg rolls and they were phenomenal! Hand made and super delicious. My wife had the red curry which she loved and I tried the pad Thai which was outstanding. We will definitely be back soon.
Best food in Lubbock,it's small so if you have a lot of people plan on taking it out. The owner and his wife have the best customer service!! The only problem is the city of Lubbock with the road work . Please support this business.
Hands down the best pad Thai I have ever had. Stopped there on my drive across the country a couple of years ago. Went out of my way to drive back through hillbilly Lubbock just to eat at choochai. I would and will fly to Lubbock just to eat the pad thai. It’s simply one of the best!
Place is kind of nice , stuck in the past , little dirty ,especially the bathroom.
Service is great and the cook a character , but food was quite bad , extremely salty and with spicy powder just added before serving .
I'm a pad thai fan , and these were so far the worst I ever had
Worth another try but not soon at least
This was always my favorite place growing up. It was missing something this last visit. I tested a bit more of a vinegar taste than I have ever noticed before, but still my favorite. I hope they get a chance to do some updates. There is a lot of construction in the area.
Pad Thai was one of the best i’ve ever had, there was a bit of a wait but it was completely worth it. Service was extremely friendly and kind. I also noticed what seemed to be a lot of regulars come in based off how they and the staff greeted each other which is always a sign of a kind atmosphere. Will definitely be coming back!

Favorite place back in college. Stopped in after 10 years and just as good as I remember!
Don't let the construction deter you, the food was awesome!
One of my absolute favorite places here in lubbock! I will drive back just for this food. I love we the atmosphere, the owners, and the food is absolutely the best! Would recommend!!!
Always outstanding

Choochai is the best Thai food in Texas. I don't even live in Lubbock anymore and I'm planning a weekend trip JUST to eat at Choochai again and see their incredibly friendly staff. Please stop by Choochai if you're ever in Lubbock! And watch out, y'all, it's spicy! ❤️ Love this place.
The owners are amazing
Love the freshness and authenticity of this place. 10/10
Everything I have ordered has been excellent. The atmosphere is not the best, but the food and the friendly employees/owners more than makeup for it.
We have ordered takeout from Choochai about once a month for the last couple of years, and it never misses. If you cant handle heat, order mild. If you want variety order the specials. Thank you Choochai you guys are amazing
Love Tan and Rene!
I ordered yellow curry chicken to go. Hardly any curry sauce and overall was a very dry meal. Never had curry like that nor do I want it again.
Amazing egg rolls!
The food we ordered was not worth a mention. We have had Thai food at normal places and it’s way better than here. I like to support local entrepreneurs and small businesses so I feel bad about leaving this review but even Thai tea did not taste like Thai tea!!!
They did give us vegan options.
I would NOT give any star for the taste. Our guest (a friend) did not eat more than a bite of the dish she ordered.
The person at the counter was very sweet and hospitable. But it’s a restaurant…so food gets no points from 3 of us.
My go to Thai food restaurant in Lubbock.
The best Thai food in town! The people are great too!
Flavorful journey!
This is one of my favorite thai place in Lubbock
As an Asian coming from asia and have been to Thailand many times, I honestly am surprised to find this 100% authentic delicious Thai food. I was so shocked there’s a place like this. Recommend number 32, will keep going back often for sure, best in Lubbock. Extremely good service and really affordable price as well !!!

Goat
Nothing against the other Thai places in Lubbock, but nobody does it like Tahn. And Renee is a sweetheart!
As a TTU alumni, I have to say that I frequented this place over 30 years ago. It was my favorite hole in the wall asian restaurant. I'm so glad to see it's still there and even updated their sign. Good memories and who knows if I might get to return for a meal?
I got some soup here on a chilly rainy day recently.
It was great, I'll be back to try more from the menu.
Best Thai food in town. Has a large and loyal clientele, not surprisingly.
Great food love the spice and fried wontons!
I dont know what it is about Lubbock and amazing thai food, with so many choices in town its hard to pick. ChooChai is what I find myself comparing other thai restaurants to. Delicous Pad Thai and Volcano soup. The wontons are also amazing! What out if you order your food with spice level of hot though, there's not much in town that compares to the heat you will get here!
The food was just ok, my first time there. I ordered the combo (chicken, beef, pork and 1shrimp) yes 1 shrimp! With the noodles. The curry chicken egg rolls were hot on the outside cold on the inside, dissatisfied
No frills fantastic Thai food from scratch, highly recommend
Atmosphere rank is for the hole-in-the-wall building with a family run business serving authentic Thai food.
These folks are just so amazing. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember and each dish is always fresh. They are worth the drive and wait for their amazing spicy, sweet perfect cuisine! Thank you for all the years
The way I evaluate if a Thai restaurant is decent is by ordering the most basic Thai dish i.e. pad thai. If you've failed at pad thai, you've failed as a thai restaurant. This place failed on epic proportions at pad thai. The noodles were crunchy to taste : not only undercooked but also deep fried. The cashew nut chicken was way worse. The veggies in this curry were close to being raw. There was so much gravy the it kept splattering. The restaurant was also extremely dirty and dusty. I am shocked that they are still able to operate.
I ordered the Pad Thai, hot, with extra peanuts. Even though the person taking my order made a huge deal of asking me 10 times if I really wanted it hot, it was not that hot. I would call it a solid medium but definitely not approaching an actual hot. Also, if that is what they call extra peanuts, I would hate to see what the normal order looks like. That was the least amount of peanuts I've had on a Pad Thai in as long as I can remember. All in all, I've had worse but that was just okay all around. The flavor was pretty lacking besides not being very hot. It was fairly bland. There was also next to no chicken or egg and the portion was fairly small. I'm not sure how they get away charging so much for it.
Food was great! Prices were great! Super sweet people 10/10
This place is AWESOME!! Food was great and the staff was so friendly and helpful! Will definitely be a regular here!
True Tai food! Pad Tai is original and outstanding. Noodle dishes are as well. Warning: Their medium is HOT! Outstanding.
Friendly, great service and the food is great too
I would avoid this place. I Had a SMALL COCKROACH IN MY SOUP and they weren't even surprised. Just immediately gave me a $20 coupon for "my next visit". I asked for a refund for the $30 meal and they said they didn't do refunds, but eventually they gave me $13 back for the bowl of soup.
The customer service was great, but this is a hole in the wall place and I would not recommended it if you don’t like being in a dirty ambience. It looks like the restaurant hasn’t been cleaned in years and appears filthy(dust/dirt surfaces), random stuff in shelves at the entrance and restroom, The food tasted okay..tofu in the yellow curry was hard, pad kee mao was too oily. I’m not sure how this place is rated so well.
WOOOW!!! Thank you for existing!! I found my go to Thai restaurant. I thought Bangkok was my go to but just wow!! I ordered the pad see ew(#23) spicy with beef and shrimp and it's delicious. Took one bite and definitely had to put my fork down to write a review. I love how they stir fry the chili in with the noodles instead of just sprinkling it on like the other Thai places in Lubbock calling it "spicy".
At first I was a little skeptical about this place, thinking it was going to be like the other Thai restaurants but I was wrong.
The joint may look a little dirty inside but don't let that stop you from trying their food. You won't be disappointed!!
A suggestion though for the cook, you should add more sauce in the noodles because I feel like if I want to eat this later, microwaving it would make it dry. So more sauce next time please. Thank you.
Fantastic service. Met the chef who told me about the dish. Clean homey environment. Looking forward to trying more of the menu.
This place never fails to make you feel welcomed, the owners are very friendly and the food is amazing and served quicky!
Only place that will get your order worng 100% of the time.
Authentic family recipes, so yummy
Open the door and step into a Southeast Asia cafe with delicious noodles and vegetable rolls and sauces.
Delicious food and wonderful people. Tahn and Renee are always so welcoming and friendly!
HORRIBLE food! i ordered the chow mein and what they gave me looked like soup, when I called he was very defensive saying it’s not soup but it’ll get soggy??? We’ll never be back!
Great curry!!
Food was alright, but ~45 minute wait and really dirty restaurant. I love hole in the wall restaurants, but this one was especially dirty. Noticed another review mention this too. Whatever you do, don't look up lol.
Me and my best friend stopped by for my lunch break and literally waited for over an hour for our food. 3 other groups came in line after us and all were served before us. I even asked how much longer it would be after 45 minutes had passed and was told only 5 minutes cause he was working on our food but we still waited another 20 minutes.
My friend got shrimp friend rice and her rice was very salty and shrimp was very bland and over cooked.
Not to mention we sat in the middle table and the lady literally touched my shoulder to move me as she was walking by. I have never had such a horrible experience anywhere as far as customer service goes. 😕 very disappointed
Good food.
Small portions.
I have eaten here for almost 25yrs and have always been very happy with my orders. Great presentation and always as delicious as it smells.
First time eating there. The food was so delicious!! And the service was awesome!!
Best thai place in town, but hands down my favorite asian cuisine in lubbock. Locally owned and operated. Been a customer for about 4 years now and I have never been disappointed. Not once ! It is authentic thai food , and it's delicious and fresh every single time. Whether you are just passing through or live here I would highly recommend choochai.
Chicken fried rice was great.
$13 Pad Thai is very overpriced and very average in taste. They close at 7:30 now, apparently. Also, not open on weekends even though it's advertised online to be open. Dirty and unorganized as well. Usually
nice people but getting tired of trying to get there before they close.
Always the best Thai food. Great people.
We had the #23 and #1, it was fantastic!
First time here and I was so surprised! Cute small place with sweet family running it. I ordered the egg drop soup and Pad Thai and loved it! I will definitely be returning and would recommend to anyone who wanted to try authentic Thai food!
The food is always amazing, and spicy! Paid Thai, Bahmee, Volcano soup, Larbna, tasty!
First time there, was very impressed. Flavorful food and the waitress was very sweet. Cook was awesome as well.
Insanely good authentic food and service.
Fantastic food at a good price!
This place is absolutely amazing. Sometimes we don’t feel like meat and you can still order almost any plate vegetarian. It’s all made fresh and so tasty!
I’m gonna put this very simple… Just don’t eat there!
Tom and Rene are the best people that own the place and make you feel like family! Winter time I always get beef noodle soup! And it's well worth it most of the time I get the noodle and rice
You should change the time you close....I drove across town and we're closed before it said you should
Always great food for a very reasonable cost - never an issue and always a pleasure!
Not clean...they obviously don't care about your health!
Sad they are not open today they are great people with great food
Ok, spent 3 weeks in Thailand and this place right here in Lubbock Tx reminds me of Thailand. One chef does all the cooking. Similar to some of the best places you’ll try in Thailand.
Pretty Okay for Lubbock Texas. The staff was SUPER nice and helpful. But the food was.. meh. Padthai had almost no vegetables like fresh green onion, sprouts, few shreds of cabbage.. Curry needed more coconut milk was a little bland. But to be fair all the food in Lubbock is bland so..
Pretty good thai cuisine. Had the mild Khow pad (chicken fried rice) my daughter had the medium which was fairly spicy. More like hot. Service is great. We ordered right before they closed. Cook brought it out to our car himself. Will definitely try again!
This place is my favorite restaurant in Lubbock. Delicious, healthy, authentic Thai food with an impressive flexibility for accommodating for vegetarian/vegan diets. Tahn buys his produce fresh and builds each dish pretty nearly from scratch. Be aware at least that it might take a little longer than say Panda Express, but you're basically getting a homemade meal from a talented cook. Speaking as a fellow cook, he has my utmost respect. It's always worth the wait, and the food quality is 100% every single time.
Great food and excellent service...guess i found my new Thai resturant especially since the competition has trouble answering their phone when ya want to place a carry out order...such a shame and they served really good Volcano Soup 😞
Not good at all and very expensive!!!
Be wary of this place if you are not a fan of spicy food! "Medium" heat is what I usually request and it is HOT. But the food is great and they have a lot of options. If you want a no-frills, traditional Thai restaurant, this is the place.
Best place in town👍👍
We placed our order at 1:10, during our lunch hour. I went back in to check on our food at 1:38, (because we were told it would be 15 minutes ) at that time we were told it would be 5 more minutes.,after 10 more minutes of waiting, we go back in. We literally got our food at 1:52. Now we have to be back at work at 2 p.m. The pad thai was dry and bland. The chicken was pre-cooked and hard. The cabbage had to have been added towards the end of the noodles being cooked. The cabbage was very hard as well and basically uncooked. We will NEVER eat here again.!!! We will stay faithful to Thai Thai. This was also during COVID, the sign said NO DIne-in, but yet there were about 4 people sitting around the counter eating....
Good food, my only complaint is they don't make your food until you get there, even if you call ahead.
My friends and I ordered 4 medium spiced entrees. We all have varying spicy tolerances, from none to very tolerant. I had ordered a mild chicken pad see ew during a previous visit, which was pretty bland, so I felt confident upping my order to medium. All 4 of us are now dying from the extreme spiciness. Couldn't tell you if the food tastes good otherwise because our mouths are burning. Takeout service was good, food was ready on time.
It was okay, but definitely wouldn't order again. The pad thai was more spice than anything (ordered medium). They must have used half a chicken nugget, because that's about all the chicken it had in it. There were no crushed peanuts or bean sprouts in mine. My wife's had one small, wilted bean sprout in it. Of course, the trade off with hers was she got a piece of eggshell too.
We also ordered steamed wontons, which were pretty good. They weren't over-steamed and had a good flavor. Not enough to save my overall rating, though.
Again, I wouldn't order from here in the future. Not sure how this place has so many great reviews.
UPDATED: its green food coloring to indicate veggie eggrolls. Oops!! The guy who answered the phone was great, and apologized for the startling appearance. Love the food, and now I can say I love the service just as much.
So, I've ordered many times before and the food is always amazing. But I ordered today and my eggrolls look like they're splattered with green ink.
Love them! I used to go to Thai pepper but their hours are awful and it’s always a gamble on when they’ll be open so I started going to choo chai. I love them! They’re friendly and their food is delicious! I’ve ordered several different dishes from them and have never been disappointed. Definitely give them a try!
The family at Choochai are very welcoming and I haven't had a single visit here where I was not checked on during a meal and asked how my food was. I highly recommend the #36 yellow curry served with your choice of noodles or curry- for curry lovers out there. Noodles in curry? I haven't been given this option elsewhere and it really changes the game. Sweet people, good food.
Everything was perfect!
The Pad Thai was delicious! The amount of seeds was a little much and I would liked more sauce (personally) but overall a really good meal. I just went there for lunch today and the people were really nice and helpful with picking the most popular items. If you sit at the bar you can watch him prepare your food and that was pretty cool. I was kind of sad when he didn't put EVERYTHING he cooked in my to-go box but it was for the better lol. A very good portion of food that was tasty and filling. I will be visiting again.
Excellent food and service in a cozy atmosphere
Great food!! Best egg drop soup around!!! Love the owners!!!
Tahn and everyone are both sociable and quick to help. This place always combines the best worlds of a great plate and fantastic atmosphere. I've come here for years and I've yet to find a dish I didn't like. Highly recommend the pork noodle soup.
If Cheers was a Thai restaurant. They always remember your name and food is cooked up to order fresh every time. Alway happy when I'm about to make it by to eat.
Order the Green Curry...The medium will make your nose run...order it HOT and feel Nirvana :) Tahn's food has been awesome since I went to school here two decades ago. His $2.99 Pad Thai kept me alive back then!
Wonderful people and the best Thai food I’ve ever had.
Good
Best Thai place in Lubbock. It’s a local towny place so they don’t really tolerate college students that much but if you talk to them nicely then they are very helpful. If you ask for spicy then your food will be very spicy. White folks tread carefully. Tom yum bases and red curries are my favorites
Such a great place! Amazing food, staff, and overall experience!
Best Thai food you will find in this half of Texas. A must have is the Beef Soup.
You can bring your own wine or beer here. Long menu if delicious food.
Always great Thai food
Very hot, order mild 1st time.
Delicious food!! I got take out and it's totally worth the wait!
Honestly speaking the food was not that special, the people however were really nice, maybe me and friends got the wrong thing, but it really didnt captivate our attention
UPDATE: we went ahead and gave it another shot, and they messed up my order AGAIN. I have food allergies and I can’t risk having my order messed up. Needless to say we won’t be eating here again.
I’m disappointed because the food was very good, and the wait time wasn’t long at all, but they messed up our order. My boyfriend ordered his rice mild, he got spicy. I ordered chow mien with no veggies, medium, and I got just the pork with no noodles, and it was spicy. Would’ve been wonderful had they not messed up our order that badly.
great food, Try something other than padd Thai, Branch out
Great food and even better people!
Worst place! I went there once and a “Closed” sign with the reason “Due to illness” was hanged outside the door. Who does that??
Used to go here as a student in late 80's. I was pleasantly surprised that it was still here! Looks the same. Had lunch with my now TTU daughter. Was still good.
Amazing
When you go in read the sign above the little bar/counter seating area. Me and my fiance got a large combination fried rice this trip it was so good we literally did not leave one grain of rice on the plate. Heck to be honest I probably ate the rice that fell off the plate on the the bar
Good food but overpriced.
Coming here for years now. It really makes me sad that I don't have extra stomach's when I eat here. I love everything that I have tried it's so hard to make the decision but I am stuck on the khow soy lately. It's amazing and always delicious. The volcano soup is very good too. Be careful if you haven't ever eaten here, I order hot and I sweat the entire time, it's glorious. On top of the amazing food, you are treated like a family friend when you are there, they know everyone by name and it's just a great experience every single time you go. I have eaten Thai food all over Texas and in many other states, this is the place that I always use as a comparison.
Very delicious but a bit pricey for lunch. Our next visit will probably be for dinner if they're open for dinner. It's a little hole in the wall, but very good. I was pleased to be able to see my food being prepared. The employees were all very pleasant and accommodating! Parking is very limited though.
Choochai>Thai Pepper
Ordered the Pad-see-eew and it was dry, the meat was over cooked and the broccoli was barely cooked. Red pepper flakes were the only thing we could taste, and we ordered the medium spicy. The egg drop soup was ok. Very lemony and had a big chunk of egg white in it. Egg Rolls were actually one egg roll with barely any sauce.
Always excellent food and service
Great food and the staff was super friendly. This place may be easy to miss in traffic, but it's well worth the trip!
We love this place great food and great service!
How have I never been here before!! The food is soooo good!!! Great customer service!
Not a pretty place to look at but the food is terrific. Nice folks.
Food was amazing! Restaurant needed a clean but it was close to afternoon close.
Great food. Just wish they still had this one dish they used to make:( lol
It is a small place that is family run. Mainly Northern Thai style food. Good food.
Always the best!!! They're absultly #1. In everyway...very kind and ready to serve you.
The best. So good.
Love it! The food is fresh and very good. But the couple that run the restaurant, make it special. Highly recommended.
It was okay but could use a little more flavor. And I think it's time for an update the stove looked kind of nasty.
Spicy and tasty
Great little place. Best soups I've ever had. I've been around the nation, no soup is even close.
