Pad Thai, curries & roast chicken, plus cocktails & vegan options, in a rustic, underground space.
Heng was mediocre at best - I ordered the Holy Basil stir fry. A classic Thai dish with predictable flavors. Unfortunately, the flavor was not quite right. It was missing the beautiful marriage between oyster, fish and soy sauce. It was also quite watery when these sauces are normally all thick and cooked into the pork. The peppers were cut too large and didn’t fit the size of the ground meat.
The servers seem to really struggle with English.
Or they ignore direct questions asked 5 times.
And for nearly 20 dollars (not including tip), you can indulge in mediocre pineapple fried rice. If you were worried you'd be full, don't worry, they make sure there's not that much.
Great aluminium foil plate though. One star for that.
This place is an out of touch expensive restaurant selling cheap food to out of touch rich white people.
When you look closely at the food, you can almost hear the owners whisper "I don't care about giving you good food, but give me all of your money for our thawed frozen food"
Really enjoyed dining at Heng Thai! The green curry was so tasty I almost finished the entire meal in one sitting! This is a testament to how delicious the food was, especially as the portion sizes are quite large! The scallion pancakes were also a great addition to the meal and perfect to share amongst the group!! Will definitely come back soon to try more of their tasty curry!!
Authentic Thai cuisine conveniently located next to Brown’s library, prepared by a skilled Thai chef and served by friendly Thai staff. We enjoyed Thai tea, classic dishes like ข้าวกระเพราหมูไข่ดาว (rice with pork basil and fried egg), and Thai ice cream. The flavors transported us back to Thailand, with portions reflecting generous American sizes. Highly recommend!

-Full Moon Bucket $22
-Kai Tod $8.95- very tasty! Just the right amount of sugar and spice.
-Tofu Woosen Soup $6
-Pad Kee Mow $17.95- perfect combo of spices. The best I had for a long time.
-Hot Basil Fried Rice $18.95- loved the crispy chicken. The rice and chicken were both tasty.
-Massaman Curry $17.95- so aromatic. Loved the aroma.
-Green Curry $18.95- not enough coconut, spices and curry. Too diluted.
Rice was perfectly cooked and white.
Service: 2/5
Not typical Thai server you get, not warm and cordial. Hard to get their attention when we needed something. We needed one more cup for the Full Moon Bucket, couldn't get their attention. I walked up to the bar and asked for it. We needed a spoon, I walked up to the bar again. At the end of our meal, we needed to go container and the bill. Yep, same routine. I don't mind getting my own items. What I mind was paying the automatic 20% (party of 5) for an undeserving service.
My family has been a royal customer to Heng since they’ve opened the restaurant however, we ordered pad Thai, hot basil fried rice , pad see u and it seems to be dried. It’s not the same. I wish they would be more saucy like it used to be. By the way, we tried to order more after that but it’s still not the same. Please bring back that flavor to us.
Some said food is fantastic, some said food is mediocre. One said a server is rude, another said the server is polite and friendly. Seriously, if you never try Heng- just go for it and decide for yourself! Don’t judge a restaurant by reviews you don’t even know if it’s real and honest or fake and just trying to ruin their reputation.
They keep the drivers waiting for a long time. Even though the package is ready, they don't check and tell me. I waited for 35 minutes. I guess the food really comes from Thailand...!

it’s my third time I’m going in this restaurant to pick up an order, it takes more than 15 minutes more than the time indicated in the app
to make the order ready to be picked up
I walked in to pick up a to-go order and the man at the register was super rude. I asked for an extra sauce and told them I would pay the extra dollar but he didnt seem to believe me and reached over my shoulder as i was handing the dollar to the very nice lady who was handing me the sauce. Super weird encounter.

Yet again I found foreign objects in my food. And they wouldn’t even give me a refund!
I don't usually leave bad reviews, but this one was the worst experience ever. The restaurant at the top of the stairs was full and they directed us to their space downstairs. They confirmed that it was the same establishment with single kitchen. They seated us and brought us the drinks in 10mins. Took our order. Then we waited, asked politely if the food will be late. They didn't check on us at all. Meanwhile, lots of take outs are selling. 1hr 10mins later and after asking 3 times, 3 of the 4 of us got our food. My tofu and vegetable soup didn't come. I had to ask after 10mins for my soup. Then, after another 20mins, by the time my table had finished eating, they brought my soup. We weren't offered any apologies or there were no "thank you for coming". Worst customer service I have ever experienced. I would leave negative stars if I could. As one of my children asked, is there a system of negative tips. Well, such establishments should be penalized!

👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
We went here for a hot pot (two people) and the service was good but the vegan set was overpriced. It's about $19 for a vegan set and while the mushroom variety was great, there were only two small pieces of tofu included. Also the cooking area in the table a) took a really long time to boil the broth and b) did not boil the entire pot so we had to keep moving it around. The ingredients were fresh but there also weren't many topping options provided. It is more limited than the traditional hotpots I've been to before.
The service was solid but i think it's worth it for the owner to consider improving the veggie options.
Solid food! Our server was pretty awesome. Would defenitly return

Awesome!
Love their crispy pork belly krapao
I’ve never had better Thai food in my life - honestly, the takeout was so absurdly good I had to write a review!!!!

The food was amazing. I really enjoyed it so much. The service was excellent as well.
Had Pad Thai which was super oily and smelly. Drink was watered down. Staff did not try to accommodate after we complained about fatty food.
This is a completely inappropriate place. dirt anti sanitation. rude service. I even refused to eat, it stank so much.
Really, really excellent. Everything tastes outlandishly good. I've never had a dish that wasn't delicious. Take on order of their homemade chili oil to go. Yum!

The pad see ew was like a brick. Overcooked noodles that stuck together and created a cake. No sauce, not enough oyster sauce at least - and the Chinese broccoli tasted old. Bee Thai on Ives Street is much better, tastes way more authentic and cheaper too
Absolutely amazing. Being a Brown student from Thailand, I thought I would feel homesick and definitely did not expect any Thai food near campus. My experience at Brown was made whole by the staff—all from Thailand—and food at Heng. Amazing food, helpful staff and fun ambience. They also have a clearly-marked, separate vegan menu. Heng is my go-to spot and I will be coming back for decades to come.
I ordered beef with garlic sauce. It consisted of 3 small slices of beef, onion & mushroom, the whole bowl was full of plain white rice. Ton of rice. The appetizer was fried chicken stripe that were rubbery and no taste. All for $66.00. Not good
The food has a lot of potential, but was really sad about the customer service I received. We let the server know in advance that we wanted everything mild which she said was possible, but then applied this to one of the dishes she brought out but not the other.
Apparently she misunderstood and thought it was for only one dish- which is totally fair- we were okay to wait- but she then refused to remake it. We asked to speak to the manager who told us that he could not make a new dish but could try “recycle” this one to make it less spicy. We said that was fine, but then they brought back the dish and it wasn’t any less spicy, so basically one of us couldn’t even eat the food.
Also, the manager told us that we should have let our server know in advance, which we had done- so it felt like they were more focused on reprimanding us than helping us.
Lastly, they brought us the check immediately without checking in, even though several of our table wanted dessert. All in all just a really sad service experience for what was supposed to be a fun night out. Hopefully this can be taken constructively as I think the place has the potential to be a warm and welcoming space!
Take out was quick & delicious
One of the best Thai food places in Providence. Always crowded, and the servers are rushed, but nice. Their thai curries, and spring rolls are delicious, and they offer a good variety of vegan options.
Unpleasant
Food literally took so long even though there was barely anybody. Wasn’t really accommodating to the guests and kinda of rude. Food was not that good!
Hands down this place was great. Food it really good and easy to ready the menu. Food was too good to take a picture.
This spot is great - love the renovated pub feel - it's so cozy and homey. Food is delicious and the service is friendly and efficient.
Excellent
I can’t stop raving about this food even hour after eating it!! What an amazing find. I did take out which came hot and fresh within 40 mins. I ordered neua tod (premium beef jerky), garlic string beans, boat soup***, scallion pancakes and curry rice with crispy pork belly. Every single thing we ordered exceeded our expectations for quality and flavor. The boat soup was the favorite for this order, similar to Pho but x100000 richer and more flavorful. Honestly I’d travel states to get it and dream about this soup. The different meat selections were awesome too. Crispy pork in the pineapple rice was the perfect texture, sweet/savory combo was top tier. Scallion pancakes were loaded with flavor and seasoning with the perfect crunch and finally the green beans were fresh and flavorful too. It was super expensive but will be ordering again and looking forward to trying lots of different items!
The best Thai food in RI
Food was amazing and service was unbelievably fast and kind. There were spice indicators on the menu that were very helpful (I got a ** meal and found it to be just the right amount of too spicy) for dish selection. The decorations were adorable and interesting, they added a nice splash of color without being too overwhelming. The only thing I did not like about my experience was the fact that the restaurant was incredibly loud (even with noise-canceling headphones). This might just have been the customers that were there at the same time as me, but it did have a profound impact on my experience. Staff were wonderful, attentive, and helpful.
Very beautiful restaurant, recently renovated, with modern but also traditional design.
It was very clean which I absolutely appreciate!
The service was very attentive, coming to the table at the exact right times, and not being pushy. Also, they were very polite and friendly and greeted and goodbyed us at the door itself.
The food looked and tasted delicious as well!
Heng Thai (downstairs) = very good food, affordable and with some flexibility when people come in without telling in advance.
Maha Heng (upstairs) = overpriced hot pot with few choices of food and tasteless broths. We can see they are still trying.
The food was good, not great, and they let us know by bringing the check before we were finished eating and then repeatedly coming back to see if it was ready to be paid.
Someone took me here we were going to leave a cash tip but before we had the chance the waiter was basically demanding it from my friend, I really dislike when they do that 😡😡
Took a friend here for lunch. Just looked up on google and went based on reviews. OMFG, this place is INSANELY GOOD. The atmosphere downstairs is reminiscent of an old speak-easy, reincarnated in Asian decor. The food and the service were 10/10! HIGHLY RECOMMEND. We had the Crispy Spring Rolls, Chicken Pad Thai and Drunken Noodle. 😋
Many friends agree this is the best Thai food in providence. They also have a separate vegan menu with many options
Update years later: still my favorite Thai food place, we go here too much!
Absolutely phenomenal food. Very authentic. Friendly staff. The tom yum noodle soup and Ba Mee were amazing. Ill be back soon!
In college row, Providence, RI?
Get the Thai rotisserie with spicy Thai Chile sauce and the heng cocktail flight. If they say the drink or sauce is spicy, it is!
Very affordable and huge space in the basement.
Street parking is easy!
absolutely authentic and delicious. the Thai tea brought me back to my trip to Thailand in 2016
The stick rice used to be more stick. Make it how it was!
I love this place. I eat here between classes I'm teaching. The food is delicious and they handle food intolerance and allergies very well, in my experience.
Rudest staff I’ve ever encountered in Providence to date. Never had Thai food, and this experience literally turned me away from Thai food as a whole for a while. Wish I had their names, but front-of-house staff were disrespectful, insanely aggressive and combative. Was picking up an order for a friend. Thanked them for the order, and walked out. Staff member RAN TO ME in my car because she didn’t believe the order was really for me??? Triple verified it with her and everything, she still rolled her eyes, and cussed at me under her breath as she walked away? All because she didn’t believe the order was really mine. I would absolutely never recommend stepping into this miserable establishment. They were immensely disorganized in there too. Dirty. Gross. Overall couldn’t say enough horrid things about the place and the people working there. This experience was a while back, and I hope this miserable staff member isn’t there anymore, but you’ll never catch me in here. WAY better Thai food in Providence with staff members that aren’t aggressive.
Busy And Delicious.
Cosy warm atmosphere and friendly staff. Food was delicious and vegan options were abundant and incredible. I ordered the holy basil and scallion pancakes and devoured everything.
This is a fun little underground restaurant located right off of Thayer St. It's a cozy setting and the wait staff was very accommodating. The menu is large with selections for all tastes and diets. I will definitely recommend for a nice evening with a date or a friend.
Great Khao soi and the Thai rotisserie chicken meal was also delicious.
Best chicken Pad Thai I ever had. Awesome atmosphere, small but private. Jasmine tea with honey feels so warm and pairs well with food.
Number one, the food was amazing! Their larb tofu was yummy with the perfect amount of spice! The food was prepared quickly too. Service was considerate and efficient. I'm planning on stopping by again before I leave.
It has a speakeasy feel with the main entrance on the lower level. Food was excellent. Atmosphere was fun and social. A great find!
Yummy! Everything is perfection!
Amazing!!!
Wonderful curries and soups
Went here for the first time this past weekend and it did not disappoint!! We got the scallion pancakes and chicken satay as an appetizer and yellow curry as our entre. Everything was sooooooo yummy. The curry was super flavorful and just the right amount of spice. Servers were super attentive! Highly recommend!!
Delectable Thai restaurant with tasty fare. Great awareness of different options for customers with allergies, including gluten, dairy, and egg allergies. The only thing I wished for was a bit more zing, acidity, spicy, and overall vivacity in the flavours to make it a tiny tad more authentic. Although the flavours incredibly refined and clean.
Chaotic atmosphere. Hard not to be in that place. Food was great.
Excellent Food!! Nice servers and quick service! My Boyfriend add I loved it and will return!!!
Great hidden gem of providence!! Worth the trip to find parking around Thayer! Great Place!
Delicious traditional food and wonderful service. We will be going back.
Best Thai Restaurant in Town.
Very good food & service. What really cranked it up to 5 stars for us is their accommodation of food restrictions!
Best Thai food in town!
I absolutely loved this place! I'm a vegetarian and my friend is gluten free. We let our waitress know and she came back with menus specifically for vegan/gluten free options. It was great! The drinks were really good, the food was delicious, and the service was top tier. I will 100% be coming back!
Fast service, comfy atmosphere, and delicious food
Nice atmosphere. Quick service. We’ll crafted cocktails. And some of the tastiest massaman curry I’ve ever had. Fried egg rice was worth the upgrade.
One of my favorite restaurants in PVD
Very busy at lunch time but still had plenty of seats available.
They had a few vegan options. I loved the Pad See Ew but the soup was very plain and mild. Thai Tea was super super sweet but a good flavor. I just ended up adding more tea to it to level it out. Hard to park around here
Overall, most of it was great. Some things were just ok. I would definitely come back.
Four different meals and all were great! Super service!
Absolutely delicious. This is one of my go-to places for pad kee mow. The service is friendly and fast. The atmosphere inside is intimate without feeling too cramped or small. Their crispy chicken is addicting. Ask for more spice if you're interested! They even sell their own chili oil and freshmade sauces.
Crispy pad Thai half rotisserie chicken and moo Groban holy. Very very good..
Great food and excellent service! Our waitress was very considerate about the fact that we are vegetarians. She told us about which dishes might contain fish/oyster sauce. They even had a separate menu available for vegan and vegetarian dishes. Overall, a great place!
Great food.
Good service.
Food was fantastic! Fresh and flavorful. Service was good, very attentive, and the atmosphere was very cute and clean. The entrance was a little hard to find, but I highly recommend!
Drunken noodles like never before…Very fishy, very sweet, very mushy noodles. Will not go back
First time in RI on a business trip and felt like some Thai food. Heng did not disappoint! This place is super busy and I see why. I ordered the boat noodle soup and crispy pork belly with chinese brocolli and this place is legit! I'm Thai and the flavoring is pretty dang close to having these dishes in Thailand. (On the east coast, Northern VA and NYC still have the best, exact match to foods and flavoring to ones in Thailand.) This hidden gem is a definite repeat for me when I do come to RI for my projects! Highly recommend!
Fantastic Thai food, wonderful staff and a beautiful atmosphere.
Double-charged me for a dish and refused to correct the bill when I went back a few days later to dispute it.
This is by far the best authentic Thai restaurant I’ve ever been too the food is excellent definitely will be back
Our favorite spot for Thai food in Providence. Kao Soi is always great.
Legendary angel wings and noodle soup. However the Rotisserie chicken is boring as hell (dip is good tho) and they add too much sugar in the pad thai.
Was there with my boyfriend for lunch. The server was rude, he seems to serve everyone before our table. When my bf asked for soy sauce & chili, and the table next to us did also, our request was completely ignored and they got served it. And even when we asked again, NOTHING.
Gluten free Pad Thai was really good! Large quantity of food. Has stairs and heavy doors, so not accessible.
Nothing special. You eat Thai food in a basement with a bunch of millennials. Rustic looking "eatery". Which is code word for minimal effort when it comes to decor.
It's good for Thayer Street. It's diverse cuisine. They get creative enough. However, there's plenty of better options for Thai if you have a car.
Service is slow. Parking is non existent.
Not enough here to be memorable.
Can't wait to try this place, but I am still giving them five stars for keeping their hours up to date. They were closed for a week for whatever reason and took the time and energy to update their hours. Little things like that make me look forward to the food, service, and atmosphere at this restaurant.
I’m a big Thai food fan. I’m from Los Angeles. We have a bunch of excellent Thai spots.
I’ll be honest, this is the best Thai food hands down I ever had.
For what that is worth, you gotta check this place out!
Both food and cocktails were delicious! Really great vegan options (they have a separate vegan menu even!) I think we are going back tomorrow! 😂
Outstanding food. I got the spring rolls and dumplings, and the yellow Curry. Everything was excellent. The service was friendly. I'll be back!
Pretty good Thai food. The noodles were a bit mushy, but the flavor was good. The juices come in huge glasses.
Food, service and place is good and clean. The food is good just touch sweeter for my taste as being in Thailand before, sauces are adjusted to local palates. Menu has many choices and prices are good as it is near Brown University so geared towards students mostly. Had a good tun yum noodle soup, stir fry noodles, crispy pork with vegies and green papaya salad. No frills just good decent food and decent portions…!!!!!
So amazing and the dining room is fantastic and the rotisserie chicken was legit BANGIN
Randomly discovered this place a couple months ago, and it quickly became a staple. The rotisserie chicken and the sides that go with it (get the rice and veggie slaw - it will cool your mouth!) are awesome. The tom yum soup is awesome too. I still haven't tried their drinks, but they come in fish bowls and look great. Sometimes the wait can be long if you hit it at primetime, but it's worth it.
This place is incredible! The rotisserie chicken never disappoints and has quickly become a staple of our weeknight dinners. It can get fairly crowded so beware of a primetime walk in.
Has been there for two times. Like their crispy chicken.
Great food
Thank you guys so much for meeting our dietary needs. I also appreciate the two phone calls to make sure you were getting it right. The gluten free sauce was awesome, I'll be back very soon.
Wow. This place is fantastic. My partner had the duck soup and absolutely loved it, fried rice was amazing. Everything was perfectly cooked with complex flavors.
Love this place. Best place near Brown!
Staff/service , food, and atmosphere were 5⭐️!!!
Ordered twice online, been 30+ minutes late each time, which is info I received after showing up when my food was supposed to be ready. Decent food though.
Best Thai food I’ve ever had.
Best chicken wings ever! The holy basil and ba mee were delightful as well. Next time, I'm getting dumplings.
Five stars for my favorite place on college hill
