Sanae Thai Eatery was created with the idea of serving local Bangkok food created 40+ years ago by Bangkok chefs looking to incorporate international ingredients into Thai cuisine. Our mission is to share these delicious, culinary creations with Portland and its visitors.
This food transported me to SE Asia, I swear I could almost hear motos zooming past me. The flavors were incredible! I was a bit skeptical of dry sauceless wings, but the crispy fried outside coated in snortable tom yum dust was intoxicating. Highly recommend. I loved the massaman curry: the chicken came right off the bone, the potatoes and carrots were nice and soft, and the curry itself was straight ambrosia. The avocado didn’t add much to the curry imo, but it didn’t detract either. The roti was hot and buttery, and I was satisfied with the amount served. Not the longest wait I’ve ever had, but it certainly was not quick. Worth the wait for quality food, and I’ll definitely be coming back. Overall a solid A grade, added to my list of favorites.
This place is great. Came here on a cold and stormy Saturday night and the experience did not disappoint. We promptly ordered and the menu is great in that it has all the classics along with some specialty items. The wings looked great even if I didn’t get them this time around.
Portions were significant and the food was all tasty. Wound up going for the lemongrass pad Thai which came with a great peanut sauce. The flavors were rich and hearty, exactly what I wanted.
Overall service was solid and the atmosphere is casual and quaint. Definitely would be a good place for takeout if you’re in the area. But would certainly come back and try more dishes!
First impressions walking in were that the place was very clean and well maintained! The service was quick and pleasant, and the food was very reasonably priced, incredibly delicious with clearly fresh ingredients, and prepared at a good speed. We ordered crab rangoons and pot stickers (phenomenal sauces), pad see ew and my partner ordered pad Thai (portion sizes on both were so large that we couldn’t finish them), and mango sticky rice for dessert (was not as sweet as expected but still delicious). Will be gladly returning and I am excited to try the rest of their menu!
Delicious Thai food! The khao man gai was tasty and chicken was cooked just right. The sauces paired well with the chicken. My husband loved the Tom kha coconut soup with shrimp and said the broth was fire and hit the spot. The mango sticky rice was good but the rice could've been a little stickier. Service was great!
The service was 5 starts but the food wasn’t my favorite. The noodles on the menu were instant noodles for many of their dishes. I like Thai Champa better! I got the squash curry and the squash was spoiled. They changed my dish right the way for something else as I requested.
Such a great spot for traditional Thai that’s executed well. Highly recommend the Thai-German pork knuckle that’s shareable for the table because it’s huge or you’ll definitely be taking some of home. The Thai iced green tea was SO good. Pad Thai was solid, love their lemongrass chicken special. And the mango sticky rice was so fresh and delicious. The staff is so kind and attentive.
Me and my husband made a trip down here for lunch on Sunday. Everything we had was super fresh and delicious, tasted like it was truly “home made”. We had the crab Rangoon for appetizers, chicken pad thai and the monthly special soup with some seafood. We made it just before the rush! Definitely recommend!!

first time here and definitely coming back! sweet and sour chicken is so good, pad ke mao is to die for, and the tom kha noodle soup, has a lot of coconut in it so if you’re a big fan, you will love it.
great service, friendly couldn’t ask for more.
update 2-12-25: i’ve been back here two more times and plan on going again this weekend
This food hits the spot! My favorite pad see ew and you cannot go wrong with any of their soups. I’ve dined in and had take out. Always delicious and they are super nice here!
So yummy and sweet
Amazing! Nicest service and the best food on Alberta. I think you need to go there.
Replaced Mae Ploy. I like both but the offerings here are more varied.
you’ll find alot of unique menu items here, consisting of both a mix of traditional thai dishes & fusion takes on thai food!
its not your standard thai restaurant, so make sure to try their special items, or branch a bit outside of your standard comfort zone.
everything was full of flavor, incredible service that was more than lovely, and a clean dining space.
parking isnt too difficult considering the residential areas nearby, but i have a feeling this place will be a new gem in the alberta neighborhood!
khob khun ka! aroi mak 🫰🏻
Amazing Thai food. Great service.
Came out quickly and with great presentation.
Nearly everything we ordered, and we ordered a lot, was absolutely delicious!!
Most memorable was the Thai Noodle with Braised Beef, omg, I can't wait to go back for more. I also really liked the Gai Ta Krai and wrapped prawn appetizers.
Didn't care for the crab fried rice, it was pretty bland, expensive, and disappointing.
All in all, I highly recommend this place!!

My dinner companions and I ordered a family style meal at Sanae. While the appetizers were good, we all felt underwhelmed by our main dishes. I appreciate that all chefs have their own palate and vision for a restaurant, but I can't help but feel that food we ordered was intended to be bland for American tastes.
Tom Kha: There didn't seem to be any of the signature aromatics (lemongrass, lime leaves, or galangal). It was an OK coconut-vegetable soup, but it didn't taste like tom kha.
Pumpkin Stir Fry: Both the description and the picture indicate that this is the simple and classic pumpkin-egg-basil dish, which should have little more than those ingredients. What we received was a mixed vegetable stir-fry (carrots, bell pepper, onion) with a few cubes of pumpkin.
Pla Lui Suan: This was the biggest disappointment of the night. The fried fish had zero seasoning, which would have been less of an issue if the toppings had been the expected salad of herbs and chilies. Instead, it was mixed with some cashews, chunks of ginger, and a mild sweet sauce on the side. No lemongrass or dried chilies in sight. it just really lacked the flavors promised by the description.
I implore the restaurant to please be true to your menu descriptions. Please don't alter dishes and assume that either customers won't notice or that they would be turned off by stronger flavors.
The boy who works in this restaurant said to wait 15 minutes, and it turned out that I waited 45 minutes. Don't say it can take a long time, don't lie!!!

Came here after seeing all the 5 stars review and was disappointed with their food & services. To start off, the food felt like it was just thrown into a pot together to be warmed up. The quality of the food is just very comparable to an American-Thai spot? There are so many other options in this area with more authentic and homemade taste.
Service was also terrible on a Sunday night. Yes, it was busy with two servers. But the lack of communication from our waiter telling us something is out of stock was…shocking. There was no reporting back and we were just left without the option, and no chances to pick something else. Then when the food arrives, the waiter just expect us to take the dish from her although we made plenty of room on the table for her to just set it down. Seems like a very minor thing, but the oddness of it was the icing on top the non-existent service.
There are just much better options out there!

Delicious with some interesting choices on the menu. Price was reasonable and service was quick, I’d rank this within the top 10% of thai places I’ve gone to and would come again if visiting Portland.
Truly incredible from the ambiance, to the hospitality, and food. We were given a gratis treat along with our shrimp salad rolls which may be the best I’ve ever had. The Kua Gai was unbelievably savory and flavorful and the lemongrass pad Thai was such a delicious spin on a classic. We will definitely be back.
Met my sister for dinner here. We had crab rangoons and each got a hot pot dish. The food was so flavorful and delicious. Can’t wait to go back and try more. Definitely recommend!
Pretty bad food now that they’ve changed cooks and owners. Just not the same. Very oily, overcooked and overgreased. Blah flavor profiles. Super nice people, just below average Thai food. Spicier than average, if that’s an issue for you.
I’ve dined in at Sanae Thai a few times and ordered take out and every time the food is delicious and the people working are so kind and attentive! This is my new favorite Thai place on Alberta street (and there are like 6 to choose from!)
So much better since the remodel and by far the best Thai place on Alberta. Lots of vegan options and everything is tasty. Great full and attentive service.
Had a great lunch here with my honie. Very kind folks. We would stop by again. My yellow curry was delish. The place was clean as well.
We ordered the basil eggplant dish which came buried under a mound of green bell peppers when removed revealed four bite-sized chunks of eggplant and a few basil leaves drowning in a salty liquid. The pad see ew was just that ewww. The noodles were rubbery and came in one solid mass. The yellow curry passed. Maybe the food is better when you dine-in.
This place has been on my list for a while, so glad I finally went! My wife, my toddler, and I all loved the hat yai chicken, especially dipped in that sauce. Definitely can't wait to go back and try their other dishes!
Very good! Definitely worth a visit.
Red Pumpkin Curry and Papaya Salad were mediocre
We really loved our experience overall and want to come back to try other dishes. I think we just need time to tune our favorite.

yum woon sen we ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- we like this more than the khao soi
- this needed to be spicier
- we liked the glass noodles

Love the food, curry broth is amazing!
5 of us foodies experienced sensory delicious pleasure. Our group from France, to D.C., Seattle, San Francisco & Austin. Warm hearted service, delightful decor & sparkling clean. Definitely a new favorite Thai on my crave list.
I recently visited Sanae Thai was thoroughly impressed by the authentic plates and excellent service. We ordered the boat noodle, yum wunsen, and crispy chicken rice. Each dish was really, really good. I highly recommend this place to anyone who appreciates Thai flavors.

Food and music slaps. Portions were great. Awesome employees were super polite and helpful while also being slammed for Last Thursday
Muy bueno el restaurante la comida muy rica y tienen buen servicio 👍 me encantó ❤️
Good quality, real Thai food. Similar to what you would taste eating in Thailand. Portions are reasonable. The prices are only modestly inflated. Satisfying meal. Wouldn’t eat here every day, but would definitely go again.
The place is very nice, we eat inside, but also there is outdoor sitting, the food is espectacular!!! Also the drinks! We enjoyed the Alberta Colada! The fried rice, the salmon, and the desert is amazing! Definitely we will be back and I highly recommend!
Very unique Bangkok style Thai food. Super delicious and friendly staff. Highly recommend.
So excited about this new spot in my neighborhood ! I’ve tried a lot of different Thai places in Portland, and this is my absolute favorite . Split the khao man gai , pad see ew, and Panang curry with two others and all of it was so well prepared and delicious . Prices were reasonable & cocktails were tasty . They seem to have a really good happy hour, so I plan to go back soon. One of the best meals I’ve had out in awhile & my partner and I eat out alot. 10/10 would recommend !!!!!
Awesome new Thai restaurant! Come try it!
We came for lunch all the way from Olympia and we were not disappointed. The pineapple curry with baby bok choy, mushrooms and shrimp were excellent and the eggrolls were beyond delicious. I recommend that you try this place. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it.
I don’t write reviews but I felt compelled to for this restaurant. Great food. Great friendly service.
Nice remodel making a comfortable and classy vibe. The staff is very friendly and professional.
The food at this place was top notch. Highly recommend the wings and the pad kee mau, the wide noodles were fantastic! The potstickers were also great, crispy but not at all greasy. The people working were super nice and accommodating. The restuarant was clean, with comfortable seating and a chill atmosphere.
Get the Pad Kana w/tofu you won’t regret it!!!
Yesterday I ordered a simple noodle dish for takeout and asked for spice level hot. What I brought home was plain rice noodles and a tub of bright orange sauce. There was no flavor on the noodles at all, I honestly believe they boiled noodles and put them in a box with chicken and egg (apparently cooked separately and also with no seasonings), along with garnishes and the tub of sweet vinegary neon sauce. The noodles were definitely not stir fried as advertised. It was the blandest, worst Thai food I've had in my life, really insultingly bad.
Please don't insult me further by implying I'm simply not sophisticated enough to appreciate your cooking techniques, Sanae, I know what flavorless noodles look and taste like. My sincere hope is that this was an honest mistake, that someone was in a rush and forgot some crucial steps, because we're willing to go back once more. Please do better.
Yummy.
An amazing new Thai restaurant on Alberta street and one that really brought authentic Thai to life.
We had the papaya salad, crab fried rice and drunken noodles and everything was delicious, presented perfectly and overall I loved the food. I’ll be going back regularly as it has become my favourite thai spot in Portland
The food is wonderful and the folks here are so nice! Lots of gluten free and vegan options. Highly recommend the Chinese broccoli.
Cute little spot with amazing food. Officially my new go to spot for Thai food. I’m not one to order the typical items so i’m glad they have a mixture of both the classics such as pad thai and different curries, but they also have other dishes you wouldn’t find elsewhere and they do it well. The fish set stole my heart and the pork stew noodles is like a hug in a bowl. This is a new business and while i’d like to keep it my hidden gem, they deserve all the recognition thats coming their way. Can’t wait to go back!
They do have some unusual items on their menu but tbh they didn't appeal to me. So I went with good barometer dishes like Pad Ke Mao & green curry, they were both really bad. The noodles with sticky & overcooked & the meat tasted bad. The curry had almost no vegetables & the pork was rubbery & flavorless. The restaurant was comfortable & clean & the servers were very nice, hard to compete with the thai restaurant next door which has great food.
Delicious! Loved the Tom Kha soup! The staff was friendly and accommodating too. Happy to have them in the neighborhood.
Sanae opened earlier this week and I’ve already had it twice. I’ve gotten the Pad Kraprow with chicken both times and loved it. Also of note- the tamarind chicken wings and the Tom Yum soup with tofu. Really solid Thai food that’s welcomed in the Concordia neighborhood. Give it a try!
We had a great time eating here! Every dish we ordered was so tasty! Our host was also great and offered suggestions for appetizers and main dishes. The vibe was really chill with a few other people at the other tables, but I'm sure that's going to change once more people find this place and how amazing it was. Looking forward to coming back in the near future for more delicious food!
So glad we stopped here for dinner! The food was so flavorful and delicious. Im glad I went with a group of people so we could order a variety of appetizers and desserts. The eggplant was really good. The staff were so kind and informative. I loved it. I am looking forward to going back again!
