Chic locale for upscale Asian-fusion cuisine impresses with creative sushi & a top-shelf wine list.
I’ve been a loyal customer of Mon Jin Lau for years and realized it was high time I shared my experience. This place has truly stood the test of time the quality of both food and service has only improved over the years, much like a well-aged wine. Every dish is a delight, and whenever I’m served by Pimi, she always suggests or even creates a dish that perfectly complements my taste buds. I highly recommend Mon Jin Lau for all occasions. It’s my hidden gem where I’ve celebrated many special milestones. Thank you for consistently delivering an exceptional dining experience!
First time visiting this restaurant. We enjoy trying new places that offer a happy hour food menu. The interior is beautifully decorated, our weight staff Tammy was excellent, and all the food we opted to try was very good. We definitely will be going back and maybe we'll bring some friends too.
I've never tried the food at this place, but I did attend the Halloween party. From what I've heard, it is the largest Halloween party in Oakland County.
It was a very up-beat vibe, to say the least. There were like 3 different dance floors and 2 patios to chill and take a break from all of the noise.
The prices were very high to reserve the booth. There is like a $500 minimum of drinks in order to reserve the booth, at least that's what I was told. Keep in mind, the booths are not actual booths. They are benches. Mixed drinks are roughly $16. Bottles range from $250-$500 depending on what you get.
From what I hear, every Wednesday there are big parties like this.
While it was a very fun time, It got very crowded, making it very difficult to even move in certain parts of the place.
The parking is also valet. So that is something to keep in mind.
Overall, while I've yet to try their food, the vibe for their Halloween party was quite the atmosphere. It can be quite pricey and overcrowded though.
The place was full to capacity at lunchtime during Lunar New Year week; a sign that the food is good. After a bit of a wait, we were seated at the only available table;it seems they're very used to accommodating large party seating.
The menu is comprehensive without being overwhelming. We ordered multiple dishes and the tea was promptly served. We were advised there would be a delay, we understood. All of the dishes were absolutely delicious; shrimp fried rice, meat dishes, vegetable dishes, noodle dishes.
I'm sure their take out business is good too. I'm not sure if they're normally that busy but they use every available space in their establishment; perhaps a refresher or redesign of the space would enhance the atmosphere. Regardless, the food is fantastic!
#1 Asian spot on my list ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This place is so good I had dinner here 3 nights in a row to try other items on the menu.
The ambiance is a dim lit Asian decor with indoor or outdoor seating and a fully stocked bar. I highly recommend sitting at the bar and ask for Lisa, she is amazing. Creative cocktails and amazing appetizers (try the Gyoza). The sushi menu is phenomenal and I highly recommend the Osaka roll. For main dishes i recommend the Japanese filet, Seabass, or scallops. For dessert you have to try the pistachio ice cream!!
Mother's Day dinner with the family was a treat at Mon Jin Lau and worth the hike across town. My aunt is a regular and simply loves it. The servers are well versed with vegan diets, so there was something for everyone. They were patient, helpful and anticipated our needs, like bringing low sodium soy without us asking. We ordered a mix of items and all were fresh and tasty. My cousin enjoyed her chicken sizzling rice bowl for two and carried the rest home for lunch the next day. Kids loved the edamame, we ordered it twice. Vegan items worth trying: Lettuce wraps, sushi (Buddha & garden rolls), Szechuan eggplant (batter for fried tofu is vegan, they checked for us). The vegetarian selection is separate on the menu and can be made vegan (minus egg) on request. Many thanks to Izzy who did a great job with our table. The owners came around a few times to check in as well, which reflects their involvement and commitment to creating the best dining experience. So what was missing? Well, it was a full house. The restaurant is rather congested when at full capacity and moving around can be a challenge. You can imagine the noise as well. Thankfully, we had a corner table, but it was right by the kitchen door on one side and the patio entrance on the other, so there were a constant stream of servers and large plates of food coming right behind us and above our heads. They didn't drop anything and were polite about it, but it may be worth considering keeping a smaller table in that particular corner and smaller tables in the restaurant generally so people can move about more easily. Often, others had to get up from their table just to let us get by. The other thing is, while I understand its popularity, they were struggling with getting finished dishes cleared off the table and having enough space. We stacked dishes to accommodate the lack of space. If that could be better handled on busy nights, it would be helpful. In addition, perhaps they can consider brighter overhead lighting (in place of the small table lamp in the center) and a Lazy Susan so people can better share dishes. We had to pass things over and across, and while it's fun for some to do the interactive family style dining at a fine dining restaurant, this could make it easier. Still, we had a great time and would definitely go back.
Call ahead. They book up quickly.
This place runs more like a brothel than as a restaurant, especially on Wednesday nights. I guess that is the only way they can earn revenue.
Amazing restaurant and amazing service, had the pleasure of meeting the owner Brian and he was an absolute class act. I will never go anywhere else for sushi ever again. 10/10 recommend.

Great food beautiful atmosphere
And great service 10/10
Great restaurant been coming since year. Food is delicious and owned by A. Amazing family will always continue to return. Highly recommend.
Booked a table for two to celebrate my birthday. We were given a minuscole table attached to a wall, in front of an extremely noisy party of 20 people, with barely the room to seat, the waitress almost couldn't move through the small space between our table and the big table of the party of 20... the situation was do uncomfortable, noisy, that it looked like a circle of hell. We left without even ordering.
Love the food but this is the 3rd time in a row that service was awful. Waitress forgot my entree so all I ate was a side salad. She didn’t even care or offer to try and bring me anything. It takes minimum 20 minutes to get a drink. It was packed and there isn’t enough help. I don’t know if they can’t find help or just going on the cheap and don’t want to hire more people. They need to get another bar tender and more wait staff
Inventive drinks, great hot(and cold) food. Best Asian resturant hands down. Make a reservation the place gets packed.
The food is pricey, but good. The first time I was there I had the Chilean Sea Bass on the recommendation of our server. It was wonderful!! Last time I was there, I had the Mon Jin Lau fried rice. It was ok, however lacked any seasoning! Dry and tasteless. I needed to add soy sauce. However, the portion was huge! It lasted me three meals!
Paying for parking was absurd. Food is already priced.

Too crowded. Tables too close together.
I really love the menu here, it’s an upscale and creative take on Asian fare. Things like kimchi crab cakes aren’t easy to come across in the area. The downfall is the freshness of the ingredients. So close, yet so far. Disappointing from a place with a menu full of potential and relatively high prices.
Great service, and fantastic ambience! Might still come back if I’m willing to steer clear of the seafood.
Great food, service was ok 🙄😒🤦🏾♀️( I don't think our server liked us that much especially after I told her there was hair in my food), atmosphere of the establishment was amazing though!! Had the pepper steak, Mongolian and fried rice.
Went there for a Birthday party. Service was a little slow but the food, as always was great.
Yes they had the delivery order ready on time for it's scheduled pickup
Great selection of food. Great flavors, great service
Bryan with reservations was great!! Food is consistently delicious.
Wonderful place but needs a face-lift on the facility.
The experience was amazing. Our server was wonderful! Appetizers and Entrees were delicious, fresh, and served hot. I am a stickler for my food coming to the table hot... Mark made the night even more amazing by honoring my fiance Terry with Champagne and cake for his birthday!
Hot mustard is superb
Always a special treat coming here! BEST food
Great atmosphere too!
I have enjoyed the Min Jin Lau since the mid nineties but in last couple of years the quality of the food is not the same. Sweet and sour chicken seemed to be frozen breaded chicken. The mongolian beef served in a thin soupy sauce. The chicken in Sizzling rice soup tasted old and reheated. Prices are way to high for this lack of quality.
Great place. Valet-only parking seems unnecessary in this part of town.
Stopped fir dinner for my wives birthday .Plate service was very slow dishes started to pile up. Not the service I expected.
Always a great meal and service at Mon Jin Lau. Love this restaurant for sushi and the entrees!
Went for a 7pm dinner on a wednesday. the atmosphere is calm, apparently things don’t get going until about 9:45. The food was borderline disgusting. the spicy udon noodles weren’t spicy, had no flavor at all actually. the spicy thai chicken was the same. no spice and no flavor. worst part was the gratuity is almost 50%! bill was 47 something and gratuity was $17. don’t waste your money here!!
I absolutely LOVE this place!! Its thee best Asian food in town hands down.
I highly recommend going here!
I've been going here for 20yrs and I just went here on my bday and wow was that spectacular!!
Best place in Metro Detroit!
Went for a birthday party, and the food was delectable. The atmosphere was fun. Need a bigger dance floor, though.
Fantastic! Been going here for years. Amazing food, great service!
Everything is so nice about this place however the “valet” will sit there with security and when you park they demand money from you or else you can’t come in. Even though you parked yourself and they sit there and don’t even look like valet ppl until you walk to the doors.
If you are gonna charge for parking you need guys standing at the entrance of the parking lot letting people know. Not forcing someone to send them money or they can’t come in. Unprofessional will never come back here again.

These people are thefts the waitress thought we got drunk and she added items on our bill which we didn’t order definitely not recommended
Fun time.
Good cheap food
Food and drinks was well worth it!!! Fast service also
Love this place! I want to try EVERYTHING on the menu
Very quick service, the food didn't take long and was quite good. I'll definitely be going back.
Food was excellent 👌, chicken wings were amazing , pad Thai was great, Mongolian was great, Kalbi was so tasty. Bottom line, everything we ordered was great.
Drinks were not so great. They don't know how to make drinks off of what's on the menu.
Service on the other hand was a mess. While the waitress was super nice, the management was horrible. DISRESPECTFUL to a certain degree that would make you not go there even that the food was excellent. The guy with the white beard literally came to our table while we were signing our bill and told us that we have 'to be up right now" because the table is reserved and the next reservation is coming up.
The valet was late and took forever to bring back the car, and they parked it across and we had to walk to go get in.
I do not recommend going there, and I personally won't support them.
I think it’s the best Asian restaurant in the area but my wife disagrees so I gave it a 4 star overall because of that.

Food and service were both amazing!
This place never disappoints the food is always wonderful and the service is on point!
very noisy. slow service. the $15 salmon roll had a very, very small amount of salmon on it.
Best asian dinner spot in the area
Love this restaurant
Just ok. Sushi was dry
🪷OMg, OMg, Great Atmosphere !!
Cocktails & Food ALWAYS great!! Good Service! Always happy to go back!! I’m
MJL always the best
Visited Mon-Jin-Lau early this evening for dinner with my cousin. The restaurant is an example of high class art. Highly recommend and will return. Would like to thank June, our waitress, for going up and beyond to ensure our dining experience was perfect. The food she recommended was amazing!
Food quality has gone down tremendously, food was absolutely tasteless. Sad to see this use to be a great restaurant. Service was fine.
Such horrible service, went in and had dinner reservations, but they wanted a ten 10 dollar cover per person just for dinner. It didn't make any sence at all. I have never been to any restaurant that charges cover with a reservation. The security and staff were extremely rude and I have no problem taking my business elsewhere. 0 stars if possible due to such terrible service.
Great customer service every time we’re there! The food is excellent !
Staff was good. Atmosphere is cool. Anybody that thinks the food here is good has no clue.
Food was amazing, we brought our parents! They loved it!
Honestly disappointed. Years ago this place was the best around. Quality dropped A TON.
Mon JinLau has lost the once amazing food Quality especially sushi grade !!! The place is being run down ,very sad to see this decline perhaps the owner is too old to care about the once great restaurant!!
Doing a take out. Food was great..was suprised when the cashier automatically kept the change from the money i gave her. She had said they preferred cash to credit card. My bill was less than $30. What she didnt realize was her tip would have been greater than the money she kept, had she given me my change. Not sure if i will be going back.
Awesome Wednesday night experience!
more concerned about a dress code rather than the quality of service. its a bar across the street from a motel 6 wake up
Used to Gogo for then everything is amazing here bringing my friends tonight :)
Our usual Chinese place wasn't open so we decided to try here. BAD IDEA! We all got food poisoning on my son's birthday! We all had the sweet and sour chicken. It is also over priced for amount you get. Not coming here again.
Wonderful service and great selection of dishes. Must try!
We have been going to Mon Jin Lau with my Dad for many years. We decided to celebrate an early Father’s Day dinner. my husband was looking forward to ordering his usual crispy duck. When the duck was served it looked different than it has in the past. It was inedible. The pieces were too hard to chew. When we broke a piece open there was very little meat inside. The manager said their crispy duck is a duck pate ? Which doesn’t make sense for many reasons. They kindly took the duck off of our bill. Unfortunately, my husband didn’t have dinner, the restaurant didn’t offer to fix it or provide another meal.
Overall the food was very lackluster and I was surprised by the overall decline in quality and service.
Great food great service
The food is so good !
OUTSTANDING on all accounts!! Food was delicious, served hot and fresh with generous, reasonably priced portions. Ambiance is beautiful and service was top notch. Highly recommend the Ming Shrimp appetizer, lettuce wraps and spring rolls, as well as every entree our party of 8 enjoyed, including Sesame Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Salmon, Avocado Ribeye, & Cashew Chicken. We really had an amazing meal and highly recommend Mon Jin Lau!
Excellent food, service and ambience. It took a little longer than we would have liked for drinks to come and for our server to take our order, but there were several large groups in our section. Once we placed our order, everything came out in a well-spaced out, timely fashion. It was a perfect little spot for Saturday date night. We will be going back.
Have not graced the doors of Mon Jin Lau in over 6 years so when a family member was looking for a place to celebrate Mother’s Day I suggested them. Overall we enjoyed our visit and our meal was delicious but…..
Service was very poor. I realize it was a holiday and they were busy but it took a half hour just to place our drink order and then our waitress, June disappeared. Drinks arrived after about 15 minutes and although we told her we wanted to order appetizers she said okay and took off again! Took another 10 minutes for her to get back to us. We then ordered our meal at the same time to avoid any more delays. Appetizers came out at two separate times. Meal came and my husband was missing his “pancakes” which come with mu shy beef. He questioned June and she appeared puzzled as she looked at his plate but did go back and get some. Husband proceeded to eat his meal realizing the reason she looked puzzled was he was not given the right entree and had Mongolian beef instead! After that she never came back to check on us or as my husband if he’d like another Coco Cola other than to tell us the kitchen was closing and bring the bill which had an automatic gratuity added on! There was just 4 of us and although I probably would have left her at least 10%. She did not deserve what was added to the bill. We will have to rethink that if we’ll visit again

My son treated me Saturday to beat the Mother’s Day crowd on Sunday I didn’t mind. I ordered crispy duck it was terrible. I tasted better chicken McNuggets. It didn’t taste like duck, I must admit on a scale from one to 10 the crispiness was 11 my gums are scratched up from chewing.I will never order that again, but I am willing to try the restaurant again. They should take that off the menu I have eaten duck in Hong Kong it’s one of my favorite. A few times in the United States. I have cooked duck several times and I am a novice, I don’t know what that was. Tasteless, mush inside of crust. OMG! One good thing came out of the meal the waitress was nice.
I got the orange chicken it almost feels like the chicken is surrounded by a funnel cake it’s very soft and airy but almost like eating a piece of chicken wrapped in a pancake that was put in orange sauce.
You can't rate this restaurant on me! I only went here because of my family, I really don't like Chinese food that much, but my family loved it. They gave it 5 stars, me on the other hand gave them a weak 3 stars!
First time visiting
Very pleased with service and the food was excellent. Definitely will return.
The food was pretty good. Went with a group of friends on a Wednesday night – it was very loud and packed. I think how busy it was affected our ability to receive good service.
Amazing food. Great sushi.
Every dish is delicious!
Mon Jin Lau has been a tradition since the late 80's in our family. We go for all celebrations and for fun nights out. They always have incredible food, superb drinks, and wonderful service.
Had an issue here a few years ago, and stopped going. Decided to give it another try and have been back twice. All good.
Today, I ordered a quart of vegetable fried rice (brown rice) and added tofu and broccoli. $24, and the tofu is inedible, like chewing on leather.
I think I'm done with this place.
My favorite classy asian spot for noodles. Entrees and huge and delicious, drinks are great, staff is always fast and kind. I love the paper table covers and doodling on them ❤️
We went in last Friday and throughly enjoyed our meal.
We had 2 versions of your calamari
Pupu platter & many other items on your menu.
Every guest at our table kept raving how delicious it was.
Thank you We will all be back
Great food and service
FOOD ,SERVICE, ATMOSPHERE IS 100% GREAT.
We tried several dishes and everything was delicious! The Thai sea bass was amazing, cooked perfectly. The Ming calamari has excellent flavor and spice. My husband ordered the Korean spicy pork chop, it was tender and delicious with a sweet spicy sauce. Highly recommend, we will be back!
Went March 30 with 4 others. Bill come up to $170, I paid with my card. When the purchase finalized I was charged $230. That's horrible customer service. I suggest paying with cash!
Love this restaurant. Have been coming here for 30 yrs. But please improve the way you deliver plum sauce/ hot mustard. The same open container with the same spoons should not be shared from table to table. We noticed after asking for plum sauce we received the condiments from the buffet that were then placed on the buffet after we were done with our meal (without changing the containers or spoons looking ready to be shared to the next table that requested). Quite disturbing.
My first time visiting. My husband had been here many years ago and the memory of the crispy squid stuck with him…he was beyond excited to see the restaurant was still in business and still serving this dish- it was just as he remembered. We also tried the pad thai- it was great. The drink selection and drinks were also exceptional. Our server Robin was great- informative, attentive and friendly.

Summary Review:
This is an honest review of a restaurant experience. The entrance to the parking lot may look untidy, but the interior is welcoming and neat. Although tables are crowded, reservations ensure immediate seating. The waitress, Izzy, is excellent and very informative. The only critique is the need for blinds to provide shade during sunset. The appetizers, drinks, main meals, sides, and sushi are satisfying. Vegetarian options are available, and the service is excellent. The coffee gelato is highly recommended for dessert. Overall, the restaurant is clean, lovely, and worth making reservations for.
■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■Detailed Review:
As a first-time guest, I found the entrance for parking a bit untidy with cones, but as soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a welcoming and neat interior. We had made reservations, and our seating was immediate. Though the tables were crowded, we managed to find our way through. Our waitress, Izzy, was excellent, and we appreciated her informative nature and her ability to manage queues. It was noteworthy, given that the quality of service and the art of waitressing are often lacking in other places. We would definitely ask for her again.
One suggestion for improvement would be to add blinds, as the sunset was quite enjoyable, but there wasn't enough shade, and the rays hit my great-grandmother and me in the eyes for most of our experience.
Now, regarding the food, there were many dishes that we tried, and here are our thoughts:
For appetizers, the spring roll was an extraordinarily satisfying crispy crunch, and the calamari was the best we've had in Michigan, with sweet and savory flavors. The scallion pancake was a perfect thickness, with a medium crispness, and the sauce to pair was refreshing. The spice level was that of chili peppers, for those who are "in tune" with their tastebud sensitivity.
When it comes to drinks, we weren't sure if we liked the expresso martini, but we enjoyed the chintini, which is a lighter drink that's pleasant for those who prefer fruity flavors.
For our main meals, the Szechuan eggplant with tofu was a savory and plentiful vegetarian platter, and it was well worth the price, given its freshness and heartiness. The beef dishes and sea scallops were also buttery, juicy mouthfuls that were worth every bite.
For sides, both the shrimp and plain veggie fried rice were addictively good, with an umami (almost smokey) fried flavor that wasn't greasy. The seasoned green beans were not too saucy or dry, and they had a balanced amount of aromatic flavors.
When it came to sushi, the salmon avocado and vegetarian Buddha roll were standard sushi rolls with subtle flavors. The sushi rice was very light in taste, but the rolls were good. However, we would have liked more kanpyo/flavor in the Buddha roll, as it was pretty light.
Lastly, for dessert, there were several gelatos, carrot cake, and chocolatey desserts that weren't on the menu, and you had to ask your waiter/ess about them. The coffee gelato was delicious, and as a coffee-addicted dessert junkie, I would highly recommend it (if you're not affected by late-night caffeine consumption). My family members mentioned the carrot cake for next time, as they heard only good things about it.

Overall, with tasty vegetarian options, excellent customer service from Izzy, and a clean, lovely atmosphere, it would be wise to make reservations. Five forks up, lets eat here again!

Amazing!! Food was wonderful. Service was above and beyond. Well be back.
Phenomenal. My wife and I were back in town after many years away and were pleased to see this was still here and was every bit as good as we remembered. We will be back the next time we are in town!
Fun happy hour menu
Great food however the fact that the Troy Police Department units sit in the parking lot next door waiting to pull over drunk drivers as they leave Mon Jin Lau is a bit much. It’s almost like a sobriety check lane, which is illegal in Michigan. Every night, all night long long, especially at 2:00am.
This place is FIRE every time!
All of our dishes were amazing and the service was top notch. It was a little loud but fun atmosphere
5 star for our Dinner outing except a little crowded for me.
First-time customers. Much different atmosphere than expected. Many young drunk people and music was SO LOUD that you couldn't enjoy dinner IF you DID get a table. Just wanted to enjoy some sushi and some drinks.
Awesome food!!!! Best fried rice I have had in a long time.
This place is perfect for any occasion. Took my wife for her birthday & it was perfect. The food & drinks hit the spot, our server “ Izzy” took care of us! Definitely recommend this place! Along with the GM “ Mark” one of the greatest GMs around.
Let's call this review I've been there before and the drinks and sushi are still good but that's about it.
I've been going here for almost a decade and typically I've always considered it a 4 to 5 star restaurant. Today we went after quite a long time of not going since we had family in town. Honestly we were pretty disappointed. The wrapped up silverware had some type of Ash in it which really was weird and almost seemed like somebody smoked a blunt while rolling silverware. It was weird. But we said okay whatever moving on and then we ordered orange chicken wish we had probably 15 times in our lives and three rolls of sushi and the Singapore noodles. Also we ordered a couple drinks and those were good. The rolls were actually better than I remembered. I would probably go back for the rolls but the actual dishes were pretty subpar. And by so far I mean I would tell everyone never to order those because the orange chicken was literally just fried chicken with a side of sauce that was not orange sauce. It was definitely the plum or Hoisin sauce. Tasted like it looked like it and was just as thick. I've had orange sauce and typically it's pretty orange this sauce we got was purple and dark. We asked them multiple times as they were sure and they said oh it's definitely orange sauce and not hoisin sauce so after a while we just said you know what whatever it's not bad with the sauce but the chicken was generally dry and the Singapore noodles were pretty bland. I leave this review because I really enjoyed this restaurant for years and I don't want other people to be as disappointed if they haven't come back in a while and not know what might have changed. I still think the sushi rolls are worth going for and probably drinks but I would stay away from the dishes.
I stopped by for a happy hour event and was absolutely amazed from the Dragon's Milk beer, Coconut Sushi roll and Calamari that I am still thinking about right now. THE BEST calamari I have ever had in my life!!!!! Atmosphere is mellow and quaint along with great service and food. I have seen holiday parties take place and everyone seemed as pleased as I was with my visit.
O.K.....food
Very Pretentious atmosphere...
I just spent well over 100 bucks and the food was horrible yes I door dash but when I hear upscale I expect it..my daughter did like the sushi
Excellent service, the food was great! Orange chicken tasty! Kung Pao zesty! The calamari was great as well. I highly recommend this place.
Why do "vegans" feel the need to tell everyone they're "vegan"? Who TF cares?
