Sunrise Thai Restaurant on John R Road in Madison Heights, Michigan offers authentic Thai cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere. Diners can enjoy a variety of flavorful dishes prepared with fresh ingredients.
The food is really delicious....but the portions are mid, I got some beef salad for 15$ in a small container, thaught they'd put rice but they didn't, I thaught it was a hidden gem but I like to eat allot and I'd say for that price especially the portions I'd have to spend 50$ to fill up myself, it's authentic as the food taste really great...however I was really disappointed in the portions as that can get me a medium sized pizza with 2 toppings or even one from across for less than that price, additionally....I've been here twice and I've spent 26-30$ and even that was not enough to fill me up, second time ordering something different I had assumed maybe it'd change my opinion...however it didn't, it just made me reconsider coming here if I'm hungry and looking for a place that's convenient, I wish the restaurant the best as the reviews are really good....but never taking a chance coming here again if I am going to spend that much for beef straps on salad with tomato's, cucumbers, green peppers, not sautéed at all, with chopped onion slices with green salad on a small platter, it just doesn't fill you up, and that price competivly enough could be spent elsewhere.
I randomly found this spot while looking for authentic thai food. I could not be happier with the meal. Incredibly satisfied with the portions for me and my partner. We have enough left overs for 3 meals. Sunrise will definitely be my new spot moving forward!
If you are craving for some authentic Thai food then this is the place! Not only the food was awesome but they helped us select the right food! Guided us on the ingredients as well!
Yum food! The Thai curry was fabulous! Fried rice was ok but pad Thai was delicious!
Overall worth the visit!
Order:
-Hot and Sour Soup (free, included in meal)
-Crab Rangoons
-Pad Thai, medium spice, with chicken, without bean sprouts.
Overall, it was an excellent choice. Their portion size was large enough to make two meals worth if appetizers are included. Their Hot and Sour Soup was very good, and their Crab Rangoons were the second best of any Thai restaurant I have been to. The Pad Thai was different than I'm used to. This one seemed to contain more oil and was stickier rather than wetter. The flavor seemed to lean more towards the peanuts and spice as opposed to the usual sour. It's different, but enjoyable.
A neighborhood Thai place snuggled into a little strip mall. Stopped in just before noon on an overcast Thursday. Good timing! There were two parties seated when I walked in. By the time I returned from washing my hands, there were 4 plus three walk-ins and the phone was ringing. Popular place with plenty of regulars. The to-go orders were a steady stream the entire time I was there but the one lady seating & taking orders was polite, friendly and efficient at dealing with everything. Bravo!
I was greeted immediately a grabbed a booth (there are 7 plus two other tables.
The menu is massive. Well organized with some pictures. Ordered the Pad Ped for my lunch which comes with hot & sour soup.
Vegetarians beware: the hot & sour soup has meat within. But it's tasty, as was my main course.
The music played quietly in the background where it belongs.
The service is attentive without being obtrusive. A varied and interesting menu. The flavors in the Tom Yum Soup were complimentary and took “ comfort food” to the next level. I also enjoyed the Thai-themed art. I discover this unpretentious restaurant by pure luck; Sunrise Thai is my new fav Thai restaurant. Come and get spoiled!
Some of the best Thai food I've had in awhile. I got the Gang Kew Warn and it was a large portion for a great price. Absolutely perfect flavoring. My husband got the Pad Se Ew and it was equally delicious, a slightly smaller portion of noodles but the prices here are amazing. Definitely will be back.
My husband and I decided to try this place and all our expectations were exceeded! They have a wide range of menu that I haven’t seen in any other Thai place we’ve been so we tried the curry puffs, duck curry, and wonton soup along with our usual crab Rangoon. All the items we ordered were beyond delicious. They tasted fresh and not greasy. Cooked to perfection especially the Rangoon. The sauce also provided a good balance to the crispness of the Rangoon and puffs. This place is a hole in the wall. The inside is also well kept and modernized. We will definitely come back to this place as this is now our number 1 go to Thai restaurant! Bonus is that the staff were friendly and attentive :)

food was amazing and service was top notch! the food was delicious and big portions! i had enough to take home. i reccomend this place! the atmosphere was calming and nice!
Prices raised, curry entrees and others don’t come with meat anymore, I won’t go back
Entrees used to always come with meat, now any meat is an extra $3.00 since it’s now considered a side order. The lunch menu used to come with soup, which is no longer on the menu. No meat, no soup yet higher prices. I won’t be back.
This is the best Thai restaurant hands down!!!! they make the food with love ❤️
Food was excellent. I had Green curry and Thai ice tea. Service was fast with quality. Recommended.
The food here is so good 😋
Wow. Best Thai food in metro Detroit I have had. Super clean inside, food was delicious. The soup and spring roll were out of this world. Service was perfect.
Some of the best Thai food I've had in awhile. I got the Gang Kew Warn and it was a large portion for a great price. Absolutely perfect flavoring. Excellent food, fair portions, and Extra Hot really means Extra Hot!
Hot & Sour Soup is Great!
Their pad Thai is delicious but that Thai Iced Tea is to die for!!!
A friend suggested us to visit this restaurant as it is one of his favorites. I tried the drunken noodles with chicken and they were absolutely great. The flavor and spice level are spot on.
They are awesome!! Great Thai food
First time here and I ordered the pad thai. Unfortunately there must have been a miscommunication because even though I said mild a couple of times they gave me something so excruciatingly hot. I had to sit there for 15 minutes gulping ice water. However, they fixed the dish and brought me one without any heat and it was 😋
What a fantastic find this restaurant is! It took us a few years to discover it, but now we have a new favorite. The atmosphere, the food, the staff................it all works!! This is the type of place I could eat at weekly and not get bored of the fare they offer. This is certainly 5 stars for my wife and me, bravo Sunrise Thai.
Very solid. Took a while for carryout… but its worth it. Plus the lady running the show was very sweet and apologetic. Service like that is rare so I appreciate it when I see it.
I have been too many Thai places around the area and this place is by far the most authentic. Super friendly staff and great atmosphere.
Food was average for Thai food. Service was good. Place was a bit unclean the day I went, table sticky.
Best thai place in town. The food is always great, the ladies are nice, and it is clean and cozy. My daughter Emma is absolutely addicted to this place, and eats here 2-3 times every week. Highly recommended!!!
The pad grapow with ground chicken is one of the best thai dishes i’ve had! The drunken noodles are also amazing 🤩
Authentic Thai food. As close as it gets without actual Thai sourced ingredients readily available. Very good food. We ear there at least once a week.
My favorite place
Fire foood
The Tom Kha Gai is SO DELICIOUS! Try it. I so enjoyed C13 Curry Peanut Chicken - just the sauce I’ve been looking for in the Detroit area. And the chicken was tender and sliced perfectly. The Pad Thai with shrimp was great, too. The food was packaged well and so tasty! Can’t wait to return.
Nice restaurant... Very good Drunken Noodle .
Jazz! There is always some great jazz play instead of nasty canned music and screens. The outstanding food can’t be beat. Staff [I think everyone is family] is great. Our “go to” for a quiet, delicious dinner.
Great Thai restaurant. I had the panang curry, extra spicy.🌶️
Our go to spot in the area for Thai - the food is delicious! Staff is extremely kind and personable. Prices are fair for the quality and portion sizes and they are able to get your order out quickly.
Best Thai food ever! And the staff is great!
Their hot and sour soup is delicious.
I'm going to start going somewhere else food is mediocre always close early says they're open till 9:00 usually closed before 8:30 never answer their phone rude they're very rude
They have good food and friendly service.
Worst service there is for “oriental”. Honestly hilarious
😂
Sunrise is on👏 point 👏every👏 time👏!! The Lardna and the drunken noodle are my favorite dishes there, but everything we've tried is insanely delicious
Large menu of Thai food at a house price. I had green curry only downside was eggplant was slightly under cooked and not enough sauce.
Order:

The food is very good and the service is excellent. Its my new favorite place to have a nice Thai lunch.
This is a go-to for us!! Honestly everything on the menu is a delight. I highly recommend trying all of the curries and more traditional dishes. The Pad Thai is the best in the area. A perfect spot!
Very good food, cozy and homey atmosphere. Good portion size!
I came to eat lunch at this restaurant. Food was ok but service was very poor as I asked for fried rice without egg and they put it in. Also asked for coke and did give it asked again. So after check out adding tips I raise concern about service and waitress from back side loudly said do not put tip in very bad attitude. Ask manager to give her name but she would not give it. I will request ownership to take proper action as bad service can be forgivable but bad attitude on top of that is totally unacceptable.
The service is attentive without being obtrusive. A varied and interesting menu. The flavors in the Tom Yum Soup were complimentary and took “ comfort food” to the next level. I don't give a perfect score easily but I feel if a food critic comes here they may very well get a Michelin star.
Pad Thai is verry good and I've had quite a few to compare, the portion is good the noodles are perfect size and their sause is complex and complementary to the Ingridents.
Table and plates are nice.
I struggle to find anything they could improve on short of installing lazy boy seats at every table what more could you want lol. Good job guys !

Overall worth the visit!
Cozy cozy.
Drinks were all wrong.
Amazing food. Sad they r on vacation till next month.
Great little place. Food was great. Portions were generous. Will definitely be back.
Best crab rangoon. Ever.
Un restaurante tailandés pequeño pero acogedor. La comida es excelente y el personal, muy amable.
Food was good, a bit on the spicy side. Alas, I got food poisoning from it so I cannot recommend it.
One of the first things I look at when I try a new restaurant is if the bathroom is clean. This one immaculate. Food was good. Service was nice with a smile. The group I was with even complimented the music that was being played. Would definitely come back again.
The best Thai food in town
The best pad thai in the area!
Very nice little spot! The waitress was very sweet and let us make changes to a dish to our liking! I will definitely return!
Small venue with great atmosphere, food, and service a smile! Great prices too😊
We ordered two soups with tofo, fresh vegetarian rolls and the almond stir fry with tofu. Everything was excellent! We really enjoyed it. Also got some peanut sauce to go, they do offer and it's great 👍
Soups (wonton & coconut) are outstanding and fried rice dishes are delightful. (Try the 3 seafood choice...)
I will never go there again. I paid $15 for mostly rice. It was completely flavorless even though I ordered medium spice. It was a chicken, beef and shrimp dish and it had one piece of shrimp. They put the white rice in the container with the entree and it absorbed all of the sauce which made the chicken and beef dry. I am highly disappointed.
Great food, good conversation with the employees, clean.
Very authentic thai restaurant with delicious fried rice and other options. Photos to come. Thau curry, drunken noodle, pad thai and fried rice is amongst the best in town.
Pleasant experience- food is really good. Not the absolute best, but pretty darn close.
First time eating here, it was great! Food was awesome, the wonton soup. Yum yummy!!! Service was excellent, very friendly. But again the food, outstanding!
Great food, good portions. Friendly staff and a relaxing atmosphere. Taken a few out of state visitors here and they loved it!
What this place lacks in curb appeal is made up for 10x over in quality.
One of the best Thai restaurants I've been too locally!
John R has to be one of the most underrated streets for the most authentic international food destinations in just a few miles.
Okay so I ordered some very American generic menu items.
I had just been craving some very specific flavors and I wanted to see how the basics would taste before getting to adventurous. I am on disability and can only afford one good outing a month and can't afford to buy food that tastes bad.
At first glance the Tom Kha w/ shrimp I ordered was smaller than I expected, the vegetables were large rough chopped.
However it has most buttery coconut broth with vegetables that had been brazed perfectly with vibrant flavors and fragrance.
This Tom Kha was spring time in a bowl!
The Pad Thai with chicken looked simple and decently portioned. The layers of flavor in the dish were surprising. I could taste the smokey grilled chicken throughout the dish. It permeated the layers with a complexity that only experienced chefs hands could create.
The next time I come here I will get much more adventurous. This place is amazing and has earned my confidence and respect.
Cute place with just enough room. Front of house staff is always very nice and efficient.
The hot&sour soup is unique, as is the crab Rangoon, which is one of the main reasons I come here.
The pad thai comes out just right.
This is definitely worth coming to.
Good decent food, nothing crazy but enough for you not to be hungry! Fast service!
Great
Was sat quickly even though we walked in on a Saturday, food was appropriate sizes, priced well and delicious. Our server was great. Will be back
Fabulous food. Friendly quick service. Perfect for a hot lunch. Thank you!
Excellent food, very friendly staff, I have already been back.
food was ready in less than ten minutes, noodles were saucy and very good!! We ordered the pad thai and pad see ew, highly recommend. it was cheaper than we thought it’d be too!
Extremely pleasant and clean environment, attentive and friendly staff, food was fairly priced and delicious. I've driven by this business for years without ever noticing them, and very glad I looked them up. Will definitely be back in the future.
[please "like" if this is helpful]
Thai owned and operated. High quality, delicious food carefully made to order. Vegetables are fresh and handled with care. Atmosphere is casual, and delightfully decorated with pride for Thai culture. Every inch of the restaurant is clean and well maintained. Staff are kind, and speak both English and Thai language.
#1 Thai in the metro area! Cozy for dine in, and carry out is great too. In a small stip mall on John R so keep you eyes peeled, it's worth it!
Hands down best Thai place you will ever eat at.
Inside dining experience was comfortable and relaxing. We enjoyed their green curry dish and wonton soup.
Too lazy to give crushed peanuts as a side. So never coming back… also too lazy to print receipt
🤮🤢🤮
Isn't a health code requirement that you have a bathroom available to dine in customers? I feel like all local Thai restaurants are blatantly avoiding the law.
Food is always so good. Huge portions and the staff is friendly.
My favorite Thai place in the area!
Always delicious! Angry eggplant is my go to dish. Their fried rice is so good, that I order it with my meal extra egg of course so I can take it home. Prices are reasonable. Always a full glass of water! A must when you order your food spicy!
Always great food! Rice noodles on side💯
The food is cooked freshly and delicious ! Definitely we'll be going back
Lovely place, fantastic food, fair prices.
Highly recommend!
I tried this place one time, and I’ve been hooked ever since! The Pad Thai chicken dinner is delicious, and the staff is friendly and fast!
Great service and great Thai food. Don't overlook this place.
Very good Thai food! Reasonable prices, good service.
Was in the area and decided to try Sunrise Thai. I ordered Veggie Pad Thai and a Spring Roll. The person who provided my order was nice and the inside of the restaurant itself is very cozy and beautifully decorated.
My Pad Thai was delicious. Veggies could have been a little more crisp/ fresh but the flavor and sauce was great. I asked for medium heat and it was perfect. They did not dissapoint. My Spring Roll was a little small but every restaurant is different. It had a peppery taste that I don't normally find in my Spring Rolls but it was hot and crispy as I did eat it in my car soon after getting my order.
The drunken noodles are the best so far!! Not too sweet and not too salty!! Keep up the fantastic work y'all! Consider adding pea pods to yours!
Hate they closednon tuesdays
First time here. Very much enjoyed the food and service!
It was ok. Ordered the curry puffs, dumplings, chicken pad thai and spring rolls.
The spring rolls and dumplings were not very good. They just tasted like they came from Costco.
The curry puffs were tasty but could have used more filling. I would order again though.
The Pad Thai was different...it wasn't bad but not what I'm used to.
Always great. I love the fried rice, and the spring rolls are excellent. Always big portions, fast and kind service.
The Pad Thai is delicious and the customer service is wonderfully kind and helpful.
Not good, didn't get any forks or a spoon, not to mention any napkins,
I had a good experience getting takeout. Food is reasonably priced and average, nothing amazing but still good. Had the pad thai which didnt have enough chicken compared to noodles. Dumplings left a bit to be desired.
We stopped in on a whim because of the good reviews. We ordered a large portion of Tom Kah soup and dumplings. The soup didn't have mushrooms which we are used to having in the soup and it needed a little spice but the flavor was excellent and the large portion was more than enough to satisfy us. The dumplings were good but the dipping sauce was great. It too needed a little spice. We liked that lunch prices for the entrees we're less than dinner prices. We would return if we are back in the area.
My favorite Thai restaurant in the whole area!! Highly recommend!! I love there apple salad 😋
We just ordered dinner from here, and it was some of the best Thai food we've had in metro-D. We ordered takeout, but when I went to pick it up I realized how cute it is inside. We will definitely go back for the dine-in experience, too.
My favorite Thai Food restaurant in the area.
I went to this restaurant for my birthday dinner, because I was excited about the curry puffs, which I'd heard of and no other Thai restaurants I researched offered them. My wife and I were the only diners in while all other traffic was for take away: to that point, the service for us was quick, but stiff and not very friendly. As for the food itself, it was quite tasty. I would call it Chinese influenced in texture and taste, but that may be because of the dishes we ate that both had brown gravies (only one of them said it had a brown gravy on the menu). I was surprised that the dishes were not more sour, which is what I love about Thai food. The apple salad, while delicious, was not nearly the sour experience I was craving. The Tom Yum soup, which I also hoped to be wonderfully sour, was more sweet, but still tasty. In the end, the curry puffs made the dinner worth the visit, and I will come back again when I am in the mood for the curry puffs and this version of Thai food. I gave it a three, but I would have given a three and a half.
Delicious Thai food.
I’ve tried a lot of places but this is by far my go to and my favorite place for Thai ! Just delicious !
My boyfriend ate the Pad Thai and had stomach flu the next day. I was ok because I threw out all my items: the spring roll tasted like old shrimp (concerning as it is vegetarian), the chicken in my curry was grayish and chewy, the rice had definitely been cooked at least 1 day ago, the chicken and vegetables dumplings were the same as the cheap bags you can find in the supermarket's frozen section. Finally the restaurant charged us for 2 extra sides of chicken (only requested 1) and did not send either.
Food is always hot and tasty. The Pad Thai is so delicious and I love that they give you the perfect amount of sauce so the noodles are easy to eat. Pad prik and vegetable curry are our other favorites. Online ordering through their website was easy and the food was ready in the timeframe listed. Our number one Thai restaurant!
My gym trainer recommended this restaurant as the best in metro Detroit. I do believe it’s pretty high up there. We ordered fried vegetable rolls, crab rangoon, curry puffs, chicken pad Thai, and the Thai iced tea. The iced tea was the best I’ve had in a long time, so good that even if the food was bad ( it wasn’t, thankfully!), I’d still go back just for the tea. The pad Thai was a bit different from the ones we’ve had and liked, but it had serious flavor going on! I’d like to try it again, but with shrimp & tofu and a little less heat. My husband devoured all the veggie rolls, and we fought a bit over the last crab rangoon. The curry puffs were unique, I’ve never had deep-fried dumplings with curried filling before, so that was also a good experience.
Overall, food was great, and I look forward to going back to try more dishes from their menu!
Again I dined at the right time
The place was virtually empty. Thai food is one of the last pure quisines. Many American's avoid the Rolalty of the Pacific
Those who avoid Thai food speak of it being hot and spicy. For those who partake frequently know this isn't true
A bad rap applied by them.
Try it without seasoning for novices.
Walk up to mild + healthy photogenic food awaits you
Enjoy.
This is not the Panda Express.🇹🇭
Tasty and affordable Thai food! Ordered pad see ew and pad Thai both very yummy and authentic tasting. Got it to-go and was hot / ready at time indicated and gave large portions for the price.
Will be back to try other dishes! Highly recommend.
The outside may look sketchy since it’s wedged between a liquor store and a gas station, but it’s not too bad at all.
Good Thai food for the price, the people that run it are friendly.
This is our favorite local Thai Restaurant. Peck and his family make the best curries and appetizers! Restaurant is always clean and the service is always friendly.
Friendly service and delicious pad thai. I recently got their crab rangoons and they are really good too. Pick up order is ready fast which is great when you are on your lunch break 👍
Prior to visiting, my Thai restaurant experience has always been the same. Good, but nothing too extraordinary. This establishment broke the cycle. Service was speedy and great, but let's get to the food. I had the curry bombs and drunken noodle. Quality, quality, quality. Both had an immense amount of flavor that will keep me coming back. Highly recommended for you thai lovers!
This Thai food is among the best I have had . I enjoy Thai Food almost weekly. I Read the reviews and decided to try the food. Wow ! Delicious and authentic. I ordered Drunken Noodles with Chicken and Shrimp. I ordered medium plus. It was spot on. The chicken was so flavorful.I was not disappointed and can’t wait to try other items on the menu.
Tried this new place because our normal Thai restaurant is closed on the weekends & we were very pleased with what we got! We got the spicy chicken in the Thai sauce & it was soooo good! So comparable to our normal place! (I say this because every Thai place has their own twist on some menu items). Will definitely return
Nice people, very good people would come again
Their food was very good and i will come back again, the people we're very friendly there also
Meals are always good.
Dinners are enough for two medium meals or you can try and eat it in one go, but you'll be stuffed.
small and quiet restaurant. i had thai chicken wings and a fried rice. it was pretty good.
Wonderful food and service!
Delicious 😋
Excellent food.
A little slow but freshly made, so I'll take it
Had the pork pad thai and iced tea. The food was delicious.
First time customer. Delicious dinner! We ordered take-out but the dining space is open. It's a nice atmosphere inside and we will return to dine in. My family had the following dishes: medium spice shrimp pad Thai, mild plus chicken pad pak and mild plus chicken wai wai. Everything was delicious and still very warm when we got home.
Good flavors however I think they mixed up the hot spice between my boyfriend and I's plate. I ended up with a much hotter meal than him. Besides that the food was delicious, the seafood fried rice was packed with meat, every bite had a chunk in it. The portions were large resulting in me taking more than half of my meal home.
Amazing pad Thai, just the best!!
We unfortunately decided to try this place because of its good reviews. We were disappointed by the rice-to-food ratios of our pad ped. 70% of our to-go lunches were white rice, and the rest was only a small amount of sliced green pepper, two small bites of eggplant, a tiny bit of onion, and a few pieces of chicken (half of which was too tough to eat). The sauce was watery. Not at all worth the $10 I paid for per lunch. White rice is cheap and this place is obviously using it as a filler… while also skimping out on the actual food serving.
Very basic food and wasn’t flavored. Overpriced for the amount of food. I would never go back. I’ll only go to Sy Thai in Troy or Amarin Thai in Warren.
Excellent food
I have been trying a lot of different Thai food places, many are okay, but this one is actually REALLY good. I definitely recommend it if you are in the area.
The best pad Thai ever!!
Absolutely terrible ethics ethics I picked up my order when I got home I realized it was the wrong order and even had the wrong name on the receipt so I called them album to tell them about it and to see if I could go and exchange my order they said that would be fine then I received a phone call asking when I would be up there to bring up the food that I took instead of mine apparently they were going to give it to the person no mind you I had this food in my possession for over 30 minutes at this point point I get up there and they literally take the food out of my hands and hand it to the paying customer I tell the customer listen I've had that for over 30 minutes and he said well as long as you didn't touch it I don't mind which OK that's weird and gross but OK
Food is EXCELLENT!! This is the best Thai food restaurant I’ve ever been too. Service is fast and staff is friendly.
