really tasty and homey food!!!
Love this place so much and cannot get enough of the roti canai and ice kacang

Diner Review №2

One of the best and unique Asian restaurants in the area. It feels like it's cooked with more love than other places for sure!

Food is amazing! Specially the curry that comes with roti kanai or paratha. Kung pao and Mongolian dishes were great. Basil fried rice is really good.

Good.

Diner Review №7

I have been visiting this place with family for years. This is the best Malaysian cuisine you can get: authentic, home made, incredibly delicious. Each of us takes different dish be it curry mee, vegetable curry, drunken noodles or hokkien char mee and appetizers from chicken satay, roti canay to crab rangoon. We always leave with happy bellies and leftovers for next day 😋

The food was both very new to me and also comforting at the same time. Everything was texturally varied and had many different flavors. The gado gado was fantastic, very fresh, not overdone on the peanut. Murtabak was new to me and also really great! I will be back for more including rendang

Diner Review №13

As a Malaysian, the char kuey teow here is the best in Chicago greater area.

Diner Review №14

The best chicken satay and lomein in Chicago area.

Diner Review №15

Been going here for a decade now. The food is always delicious and served in a large amount. The staff are also so hardworking and caring. The fish head curry and roti canai are staples for my family, and we never forget to end the night with some Ice Cacang.
You can tualor the food too! Make it more spicy, less spicy, remove allergens, etc!

If you are at all interested in Malaysian cuisine or want to try something new, please give these amazing people some business! Covid has been rough for all of us.

Diner Review №16

Today we had Sesame chicken, Dragon Pheonix, Satay chicken, mix fried rice and soup.
All were excellent!

Diner Review №17

Diner Review №18

Has great Malaysian food along with some Thai food as well. For stir fry dishes, the vegetables are still crunchy and fresh - it is clear they simmer the meat for a while and add the vegetables later. We were served very promptly; and our waitress asked several times of everything was OK. Reasonable prices.

Diner Review №19

We came here for my cousin's birthday. The service was great, our server was kind and personable. She really made us feel at home in their restaurant! The restaurant was well decorated and had a warm atmosphere.

For appetizers we had the crab rangoons and roti telur. The crab rangoon was okay, not too much filling but very crispy. The roti telur was good as well.

For dinner we had the sche zwan fish (dry), nasi goreng, malaysian chicken potato curry, and beef rendang. This restaurant serves halal options. Our server was very courteous, she made sure to ask if we prefer halal cuisine.

Make sure to try the sche zwan fish dry. The fish is very fresh, lightly battered, and crispy. I also really liked the nari goreng, the rice was very flavorful and aromatic.

Make sure to give this restaurant a try, reader!

Diner Review №20

This place is fantastic. Can't wait to be in the area again as they had the best schezwan beef I had ever tried. Mango chicken was great as well. Can't wait to try other items on their menu.

Diner Review №21

Pressured to tip. Felt like everyone regularly leaves tip, so expectation was set for every customer to leave a tip. Not against tipping, but the expectation is not right.

Diner Review №22

My family had been looking forward to dining at Penang with a Malay friend. When we all visited Penang recently, we were all excited to sample this Asian cuisine.
He had dined there a number of times before and so he made recommendations about which dishes to order.
We started with a couple of appetizers: satay chicken (six skewers), $12.95, and chicken murtabak, $9.95. The murtabak was roti (Indian flat bread) stuffed with ground chicken, onion, cucumber and eggs. This dish was very tasty and unusual.
The satay was moist but otherwise not much different from the Thai chicken satay we've sampled at Thai restaurants.
Our entrees included: mee goring (chicken with lo mein noodles), $13.95; beef rendang (beef chunks in a rich, spicy sauce), $19.95; Penang spicy chicken (stir-fried with vegetables), $15.95. All three of these dishes were freshly cooked, spicy and tasty. I'm not sure why the beef dish was so expensive. This dish was also the spiciest of the three we sampled.
A couple of us also sampled the teh tarik (Malaysian style hot tea, mixed with condensed milk), served in paper to-go cups with plastic lids. When asked why the hot tea was served this way, our waitperson replied, "We don't have tea cups."
We sampled a dessert of pulut hitam, cold rice with coconut milk. The rice had been pureed and so this was more like a cold coconut soup.
The restaurant is unprepossessing, a polite way of saying it is nondescript and without much atmosphere. The food is well prepared, fresh, and, according to our Malay friend, authentic (with the exception of the dessert, which should have been more like rice pudding than soup).
The pricing of certain dishes was curious because the beef dish was not larger than either of the chicken dishes. The satay offered just six skewers and the other appetizer also offered six pieces.
Our friend told us that Malaysian cuisine is a blend of Chinese, Indian and Malay cooking. At Penang, this combination can be satisfying, if a bit pricey.

Diner Review №23

Service a bit inattentive - food good but nothing special. Good variety.

Diner Review №24

Great Malaysian food. I still have not found anything better in the city and I’m so glad I only live half hour from Penang
Everything they do they go well from classic dishes like satay, char kway teo, as well as Hainan chicken and currys. These are the more recent dishes we had a mushroom ‘ spring roll’ which was a special for the day and very nice and different and not doggy like many fried foods. Soft shell crab really yummy. We love their mixed vegetable belancan. They have specials and their fried fish is so well deep fried you can eat almost every bone in the fish! And oh the other great thing is they are open Mondays when many other restaurants are closed ( and they close Tuesday).

Diner Review №25

Yummy food and friendly staff! We haven’t had much Malaysian food so we were really pleased with how good our food was! We had spicy Penang chicken and the Malaysian fried rice and everything was so flavorful. Cendol for dessert was the perfect balance of
sweetness

Diner Review №26

We felt like we were transported back to Malaysia. We missed the food there so much. Thank you so much for having this restaurant semi near to us. We will drive an hour and a half no problem to come here again!!! Highly recommend 👍♥️

Friendly staff and the food is consistently so flavorful. This is the only true Malaysian spot in the Chicago suburbs, it’s an absolute must try if you’re in the area and craving Malaysian food.

Good satay, roti canai, roti telur, fried rice, and other Singapore dishes.

Diner Review №34

When you go you have to get the chicken satay. Best ever

Food was great a mixture of Chinese and Malaysian (there’s a bit of Thai too in the back). The portions were not overwhelmingly big, so we were all able to finish our plates without leftovers. Be sure to check the specials, the fruit smoothies, cendol, and Kway Teow.

Diner Review №40

Enjoyable dinner. Reasonable prices.

Diner Review №44

can’t get enough of this place! always a go to when i’m in the area. try out the mee goreng and roti canai ❤️

Diner Review №45

We had a wonderful lunch special today

Diner Review №46

Diner Review №47

We ordered noodle with seafood not sure what it called, pulled the picture up from the google, it was good. The hainan chicken was delicious, little too much sesame oil, could have taste better with ginger garlic soy sauce. The oyster omelette was not as expected. As the picture looked more thin and crispy more like crapes but what we got was an omelette with oyster in side. Not bad but not as expected! Tofu satay with peanut sauce has so much tumeric which made the peanut sauce taste weird! Let talked about service, tardily slow! One of the server was not friendly. Only three tables with two servers, approximately waiting 30-40mins.

Diner Review №48

Diner Review №49

I got the mango tofu and it was literally one of the best things I have ever eaten. The waitress was so kind and helpful with vegetarian substitutions. The photos online do not do it Justice, the presentation was spot on and the portions were huge for a reasonable price!

Diner Review №50

Good food for a good price. Wasn't busy at all for memorial day weekend. I believe the workers use English as a 2nd language so there was a bit of a language gap, but wasn't a problem at all. The choice in music could have been different, but you can't please everyone lol.

Diner Review №51

Very good new favorite spot!

Diner Review №52

Diner Review №53

If you like tender juice chicken ( not fried ) . Hainanese chicken is a must try. Satay chicken amd beef appetizer with peanut sauce, yummy. Seafood chow fun has some depth. Chef got good skill.

Great appetizers, main dishes, and dessert. Staff had good recommendations for the indecisive in our party.

Diner Review №56

Delicious Malaysian cuisine. We first tried Malaysian food on vacation in Vancouver. I was so happy to see that we have a local restaurant that served the same authentic, delicious food. We highly recommend the roti bread with curry dipping sauce, ginger chicken, any of the noodle dishes, and the curries. Great food and friendly service.

Diner Review №63

Overall good food. I stopped by for a carry out. Food that I got was great. Reminds me a bit of home.

Diner Review №64

Diner Review №65

Absolutely gross. I felt sick after eating here. The service was awful too. Servers made no eye contact, talked very softly and barely came to ask us if we needed anything. Not comin again

Diner Review №66

Disappointed with their attitude. We drove all the way 14 miles to have food there but they closed it for a private party. Restaurants cant just close down due to private parties. The should reserve few tables for diners.

Diner Review №67

Cannot say enough WONDERFUL things about the quality of the food at this restaurant!! If you have not eaten here, you are truly missing out. EVERYTHING is fresh and full of incredible flavor.

Diner Review №68

If I live nearby, this will be my everyday kitchen!

Diner Review №74

Went to Penang Malausian recently for dinner with the family. Amazing food, great service and very friendly team!! We've been going to this location for over 15 years and love it!

Diner Review №75

Relaxing atmosphere and great food!

Diner Review №76

My favorite Malaysian restaurant in all of Chicago.
Must try:
Fry fish
Roti
Fried rice

Diner Review №77

Fantastic Nasi Goreng and Curry Laksa! The flavor and textural contrast made for an incredible meal, and the serving sizes are great value for the price. I was particularly impressed with the knife work of the ingredients and the juicy plumpness of the shrimps. The restaurant interior is beautiful and makes for a good date night location.

Diner Review №78

We tried the Malaysian options on the menu which were really yummy. We were here around 3:30 on a Sunday, so it was pretty empty. The place was understaffed, so did have to wait to get seated and saw dirty plates sitting around. So there was an aspect of feeling the place was dirty, but the Malaysian chicken/potato curry and the Nasi Lemak made the experience.

We also tried the satay chicken, but wouldn’t recommend as the chicken had a weird texture to it.

Diner Review №79

I enjoyed the food! It makes me miss my side of the world, Southeast Asia! It covers varieties of cuisine in Malaysia. The rendang was tasty, char kway teow, too! I truly enjoyed the Seafood clay pot with homemade egg tofu! Mango Shrimp was good too!

I put the service 3-star because I feel bad for the waiter. She’s working solo handling 8 tables. I feel bad for her. I hope the owner can look into this.

Diner Review №80

Food here used to be good, seem like they fell off asked for food to be extea spicy and it wasnt even mild. better tell me that you forgot to male it spicy then to lie.

Diner Review №81

The food was awesome.

Diner Review №82

Diner Review №83

The menu perfectly fits the name. The island of Penang has an expansive food culture with Malay, Chinese, Thai, and Indian influences. Most of the items on the menu are commonly found in restaurants and hawker centers in Penang proper. Penang (the restaurant) is as close as I've come to finding the true flavors that I grew to love while travelling to and living on the island of Penang.

The service is a bit slow, but this is a family run restaurant and is worth the wait.

Diner Review №84

Pretty good restaurant for casual dining..food and service was overall good..loved the Malaysian flavor...wide range of menu..nice ambiance..

Diner Review №85

we like the general tsao chicken!

Diner Review №86

It says Malaysian cuisine but it’s more! Malaysian, Thai, Chinese, Indian. Prices are pretty much like others and portions are okay. You probably will finish what you are served - no leftovers. The food is tasty and well worth it! It’s a big open place, nice ambiance.

Diner Review №87

We came to this restaurant for their Hainanese Chicken Rice and Nasi Lemak and we were more than satisfied! The chicken was fresh and tender and the chili sauce that brings me back to Singapore. Nasi Lemak was also very flavorful, the right amount of spices without the heat, and the whole chicken leg was fried perfectly. We also ordered the roti with curry, another common/classic street snack in Singapore, was well done.

The restaurant used to have a location in Chinatown years ago but it was closed. Although it's quite a hike for us to come to Arlington Heights, it is definitely worth the drive.

Diner Review №88

Penang Hainan chicken rice is the best in Chicagoland, it tastes very authentic. We also love their yam pot, char kway teow, kangkung belacan and appetizer lobak. Highly recommended 👍👍

Diner Review №89

Diner Review №90

The food was amazing. Not too spicy. Definitely a must for any foodie who wants to step up their flavor pallet!

Diner Review №91

Diner Review №92

Soooooo gooood! There's a chicken curry with something like caribbean roti that i cannot get enough of!

Diner Review №93

Beef rendang and chicken mee goreng were delicious!

Diner Review №94

Food was overall good, but service can be better.

Diner Review №95

Diner Review №96

I had dined at their Chicago location so I thought I'd give this one a try. Slow service, fairly small portions and over priced. Hard to even get a glass of cold water. Won't be returning; very disappointing

Diner Review №97

Frequented this place 10 over years ago when we lived around the area and had great memories of the all dishes we have tried.
Returned recently for a visit - and what a pleasant surprise! The food still tasted very similar to what we have lovingly remembered.
So much has changed in the vicinity since we have been gone but I am glad that some good things remain consistent.
Prices have increased however reasonable, portions are hearty, and more importantly they serve up tasty authentic Malaysian dishes.
Do give this lovely south East Asian place a try if you are in Schaumburg!

Diner Review №98

Good food, good portion.. i want more :)

Diner Review №99

Diner Review №100

❤️ 😍 love this restaurant.
It feels like we went back to Malaysia and have dinner at hawkers center with family.

Diner Review №101

We have ordered Cumin Lamb and Chicken noodles. I liked it. Food came as cold or mildly warm.

Diner Review №102

Trying Malaysian Singapore food closest to my memories of what it should be

Diner Review №103

We live very close and always see the parking lot full so finally decided to check it out. It turns out the parking lot is always full cause the service is so poor no one can leave once their order is placed. Communication is non existent from the moment we walked in. We were finally sat after 10 minutes even though there were many empty tables. We ordered 2 apps and 2 entrees. The peanut sauce tasted like water. The penang spicy beef was phenomenal but the time between courses was very long. We may order take out another time but likely will not return and that's unfortunate.

Diner Review №104

Unbelievably slow service. Bathrooms are dirty. My chicken and potatoes dish had minimal chicken, lots of potatoes. Do not bring a kid here unless they are VERY patient. 40 minutes to get one app, 80 minutes for the entrees. Not many Malay dishes, mostly Chinese and Thai.

Diner Review №105

I only wish my favourite curry laksa be BIGGER, warmer sometimes and yolk were not overcooked. But-taste of all dishes are simply FANTASTIC!

Diner Review №106

Diner Review №107

Ordered to share between 2 people and the amount was just right! My friend recommended trying these dishes and they were really good :,) the roti canal (not pictured) was a nice appetizer too. I also recommend trying the dessert~ it was not too sweet and was delicious

Diner Review №108

Good food and customers care 👍

Diner Review №109

What a hidden gem. We've been to Penang five times in the last three months. My daughter in law who is from Singapore describes their food as "legit". Don't let the hostess put you off as once she gets to know you she's very nice and funny and makes good recommendations. The food has been exceptional. Recommend the roti canai, chicken egg rolls, satay tofu and our new favorite the Lobak! For entrees, We've had the curry lamb, beef rendang, ginger lamb, nasi lemak and our favorite nasi goreng. You might need to ask for full on heat for the spicy dishes as they seem to temper it down a bit for us non-Singaporeans. Penang really brought a taste of home to my homesick daughter in law.

Diner Review №110

Diner Review №111

Just had another enjoyable dinner the other night. My wife and I have been coming here for the past 15 years, whenever we are in the area. The food and service have always been excellent. Annie, the owner, is very welcoming.

Diner Review №112

Prices are at high end compares with the quantity of food.

Diner Review №113

I really enjoy the food here at Penang Malaysian. I’ve been coming here for years to the Arlington Heights, IL location since they relocated from downtown Chinatown Chicago. Like a lot of businesses post Covid, staffing is short and service takes longer, but it’s worth it. Annie is often serving when I am there. She’s a lovely and sweet woman who is at times overwhelmed as she is doing everything. If you check in and ask her how she’s doing, you’ll get a surprisingly big smile.
Food here is rather unique and a lighter alternative to Chinese and although very flavorful not as spicy as Thai food. Tonight I had the Roti Telur with chicken (murtabak). It comes with a delicious curry dipping sauce. A signature item along with the gado gado salad. This salad is so tasty and yet pretty healthy. Shredded jicama is covered with lightly wok seared string beans and potatoes with fried tofu, egg and cucumbers covered in a light flavorful peanut sauce. I also tried the Tom Yum chicken soup, which was super flavorful and had a nice kick. I was quite pleased. If you haven’t had Malaysian food get out and treat yourself. If you haven’t been in a while, visit again, knowing you’re supporting a wonderfully unique dining experience here in the northwest suburbs.

Diner Review №114

I had a mixed experience at this restaurant. The food was good and the portions were decent. The server was rude and I didn't really feel welcomed there. We went for dinner close to the closing time, so probably she might have had a long tiring day. The menu was more pan-Asian than authentic Malaysian.

Diner Review №115

The service was definitely not the best. The final receipt came with the tip included which is unusual. The food was great. We really liked it. The menu looks more like Pan-asian and not purely Malaysian. Definitely must try for the food, but not for the overall dining experience.

Diner Review №116

I've passed this place for probably 10 years now coming to Arlington Heights. We finally got around to trying it. Ordered the Mi Goreng and the Nasi Lemak. Both dishes were super flavorful and not too spicy. Definitely recommend. There appeared to be other dishes we wish to try next time we come back.

Diner Review №120

Food was pretty good, BUT....

Service was awful. Maybe it was an off night, but from the second we walked in I felt ignored. It took over an hour and a half before we finally got our food. Our small water glasses were never refilled and we had to ask multiple times for more. I normally wouldn't even notice this, but I never saw a single smile from the staff. Felt like the staff was annoyed by our presence.

I would possibly order take out but never going back to dine in.

Diner Review №125

Diner Review №126

We have been visiting here for years now, and the only reason being that food is good (delicious ) here.

The management certainly needs to take cognizance of the manner in which their staff greet their customers and render service while there.
The male staff was pleasant and courteous when he was at our table but the lady staff is an extremely rude person and has NO clue of what it takes to be in the hospitality business.

On entering the restaurant, she saw us waiting for more than 10 mins but cared least to walk up to us and let us know, it's going to take some time.

The quantity of food seems to get lesser with every visit of ours.

In a nutshell, a lot of things to work upon if you want to stay in business in the long run.

Diner Review №127

Take out food… just ok. Not sure if I’d order again

Diner Review №130

The owner of the restaurant is very nice and chatted with us at the end of our meal. The front desk lady had a bad attitude though and did not even say hi when I said hi to her. She should not be greeting customers with that bad attitude. The Nasi lemak is great, the beef rendang was just okay.

I love PENANG! I've been going there for over 18 yrs since they were in Old China Town. Delicious flavors and I LOVE the roti cani

Diner Review №133

They’re not that friendly we came once 40 minutes before they close and the sent us away, so rude!
Once they serviced us something over cooked and they said no this is how we serve it while we tried it before at their store and it was different

Diner Review №134

Diner Review №135

Surprisingly good restaurant. Decent prices, nice decors, and tasty food. The only comment I have is the portions were quite less compared to other restaurants with the same price range.

Diner Review №136

This place far exceeded my expectations. The food was amazing, and service was quick. Everything we ordered looked and tasted great. Prices were about on par with other similar restaurants - it's not cheap but I wouldn't call it expensive either.

Diner Review №137

Diner Review №138

Food is incredibly good!!! 11/10

Diner Review №139

I remember years ago when they were in Chinatown but I wasn't sure it was the same place. How lucky am I that it's now walking distance from me in the burbs. As soon as I saw the koi pond in front I had a good feeling. I walk in and there's blues playing. What?! It's Thursday but they've got me feeling like Friday. A lychee martini later and I know this is my new spot. But you want to know about the food. I wish I had a photo of the chef's special curry chicken with special yellow sticky amazing coconut rice. But i ate it. I can't even tell you the name but it's under the chef's special. Amazzzzzing. A very good dessert menu also. Yayyyy

Diner Review №140

What a gem to find, we went on a Monday afternoon and we were blown away by the quality and taste of the food. The chef/owner came out to talk to us while we ate and was very friendly and was a blast to chat with. We ordered the Assam laksa, char Kway teow, and half a duck. The Laksa was deliciously sour and the half duck was outstanding! This was a highlight of a small trip through Chicago and we couldn’t recommend it more!

Diner Review №141

Great Malaysian food, with some Thai and Chinese options. Seems like no longer a lunch menu or soup with your dish, but still delicious.

Diner Review №142

My first time having Malaysian food and it was delicious and unique. However, the service was horrendous. There were only a couple of other tables with customers, and we waited approximately 15 mins to be seated and order. And the food took about 40 mins to get our food. My friend had been there before and said the service is slow but never that slow

Diner Review №143

Great food and excellent service. Waitress was very helpful and answered our questions and made excellent recommendations. We ordered 4 dishes and it fed us 4 quite well. Definitely recommend the Malaysian dishes and not the generic Asian foods. The Malaysian foods really shine here.

The aesthetics and atmosphere is decent but it's nothing really memorable but the food is what makes this place very memorable.

The amount of food you get from the dishes is good. Not super generous but good enough to fill up your stomach without getting bloated.

Overall, I would recommend this place if you want to try something different.

First time here at Penang
Malaysian Restaurant in Arlington Heights. Walked into an empty restaurant. Front desk was on the phone and ignored me for several minutes until.I finally said If like to order the roast duck. It was $20 plus tax.Came home to a cold duck flavorless with no sauce. The rice was cold. Not one vegetable for decor. I live less than 5 minutes from the restaurant so nothing should have been cold. Won't go back. I'll just go to Chopsticks in the future
where service is always with a smile and they don't ignore you

This is a place I frequent whenever I’m craving for Malaysian food. It’s my go to spot for authentic flavors and delicious dishes. The restaurant is always bustling with people creating a lovely atmosphere. The menu offers a wide variety of options, from classic favorites, like Nasi Lemak, Chicken Satay and Laksa to lesser-known dishes like roti canai and mee goreng. The ingredients are always fresh and the portions are generous. Overall is the perfect place to satisfy my cravings for Malaysian cuisine. The service can be slow though.

This is a Malaysian writing a review. We ordered the beef rendang, nasi lemak, chicken satay and mee goreng. The satay (4 out of 5) had pretty good flavor but the peanut sauce that came with it was just ok. It did not have a strong peanut flavor. There were 6 sticks of satay and it came with cut cucumber and onions. The mee goreng (3.5 out 5) had some good flavor but was missing the authenticity flavor of mee goreng back home due to being a little sweet. The beef rendang (2.5 out of 5) did not taste like a rendang due to lack of the caramelized coconut flavor. While it somewhat had flavor I would not call it a rendang. The nasi lemak (2 out of 5) came with a fried chicken, fried anchovies, peanuts, fragrant rice, full boiled egg, sambal and cucumber. The star of the dish which is sambal was the most disappointing. The sambal that was placed on the egg was small in portion, taste like there were tomatoes in it, sweet, lack spice and not thick. It was just disappointing. The saving grace for this dish was the fried chicken. It had a good flavor and nice crunch. Overall I would say the place had some Malaysian flavors, but it does not come close to what the true dish has to offer.

The lady serving us was recommending us items to order, she was rather rude and huffy. She was also the only server to the entire restaurant so there was little to no care and attention. The Kung pao chicken was not fried nor served as the menu described and was even cold. The mango chicken had barely any chicken and was soaked in a sweet red sauce. The chicken murtabak tasted like a meat heavy omelette and was not appetizing. All in all a poor experience and was not intending to give any gratuity but was called back to forcibly add gratuity of 7.50$. Terrible experience would not return back. Spend your money elsewhere.

Good food but was a bit disappointed. My husband and I just went there for the Egg Drop Soup because we enjoy it so much. When we ordered a second bowl , the server seemed dismayed and once we got the bowl it was just half of what we were served prior. I don’t know if they did that because we weren’t ordering a main course or what happened . We were certainly disappointed.

I wanted try this restaurant for awhile since I pass by this place often. My family and I came in around 12:30pm. We notice the place wasn't busy at the moment, it was pretty much empty at the tables, so we waited to be seated.
10 mins have passed but nobody came by the front and we saw workers. We tried to get their attention but they just stood at the back didn't greeted us or led us to any table. So we just left the restaurant.

Delicious food. Slow customer service but the food makes the wait bearable.

Ordered take out from here and the food was great! We love spicy food and they delivered! Good sized portions and the fruit smoothies are basically bubble tea but the smoothie is made with real fruits and has pieces of fruit!

I am not from Malaysia, so I could not tell if it is authentic or not. Overall, the food was tasty but did not surprise us at any point, the portion sizes were appropriate. The server was friendly and nice.
