I had lunch here for the first time and I really enjoyed it! They have a really great lunch special, you can choose two sushi rolls and you get a soup or salad and small serving of edamame that comes with it. The two rolls I chose came out to $10.85. I also ordered a small side of veggies. The spicy tuna roll was good (not amazing), the sushi rice tasted a little al dente which is not ideal. But overall I had a good experience. Staff was super attentive and the place felt pleasant and wasn’t crowded. I’ll definitely come back.

Service is fantastic, the orange ginger salad dressing is incredible. They have amazing homemade kimchi. You cannot beat their lunch special prices. If I could give a sixth star, I would. They definitely deserve it!! One of my favorite places to eat, period.

Used to come here back in my high school days, hadn’t been in over a decade. Went twice in the last 2 weeks because it’s just as amazing as I had remembered! Rolls were fantastic, fresh and flavorful. Pricing was actually cheap to me considering what rolls cost at other places locally. Will definitely keep coming back for more!

I've been a customer of Hooks sushi bar for 20+ years, and I have nothing but great things to say about them. The place is old and small, but the food is fantastic, and the customer service is even better. I will continue going there as long as I am in Saint Pete.

The Philly steak ones were especially good with spicy mayo, I was surprised they don't come with a dipping sauce. The rice stick fries are delicious but the website lists that they should have veggies in them and they appeared to just be rice and nori so that was odd. The red curry was rather bland and the steak in it was stringy so that was okay, the General Tso's chicken has a strong orange flavor to it that some people may like but I wasn't a fan of. I've had the sushi here before and it was delicious so I'll just stick to appetizers and sushi next time. I particularly like the dragon roll with no sauce and no sesame seeds plus adding cream cheese, the spicy mayo is yummy.

Bummed out the last time I went in. I asked to sit at the bar, as I was eating quickly and no one approached me for 10 minutes. I ended up leaving as the restaurant was not busy enough to have forgotten me!

Regular run of the mill sushi, but GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND PRICES! The guys who roll the sushi ARE EXCELLENT AT CUSTOMER SERVICE! They made it a great experience and I will go back for that reason. Ill try food the next time and hope its not just average, because this is St. Pete, I dont need to go to average food places :)

We have had great sushi from here over the years and always enjoyed it. This last time however, they did get part of our order wrong and I found aluminium foil inside of one of my rolls. We tried to contact several times and never got a response. We will probably return, but we will be very cautious and will be double checking our takeaway orders

Toilet broken, no paper towels, cold merlot, hair in my lemon widge and one out of 3 rolls were decent... first time in 6 years and now I remember why. One star too many; save your money.

We’ve been going there for ten years. They are always kind to my family and the food is consistent. Their lunch is a real bargain for sushi.

We tried a variety of dishes including the shumai, fried rice, Florida roll, beef bulgogi and some other items. The food was average, nothing was overly delicious but none of it was bad either. Prices were on par with expextations. My main issue was that once we received our food, we literally never saw our server again. He never came over to check how our meal was or ask if we needed anything. A completely different person came over to clear away plates. When we said yes, we are done, she offered boxes and brought us the check.

Overall it was just OK. We are not local so chances are we will not be returning.

There is nothing spectacular about the food at Hooks. Yes they have large size
portions, but no great flavor. Their NEW item, crispy tempura fried extra firm tofu was not crispy nor extra firm. I was charged 10.95 for my 8.95 lunch special, and it was not worth seeking a refund, as we will never return .

Been going to Hooks for over 15 years, it has always been a standard for a down to earth good vibes high grade sushi spot. Covid messed up a lot of things, including their very solid wait staff. I just had an experience there unlike any other, ever. Four of us came in for dinner on Saturday, there were three two tops available. No wait in front of us but the hostess told us it would be a 30 minute wait (ok probably short staffed tonight?). However the guy behind us (a table for one), no reservation was sat ahead of us after fussing at the hostess, and sat in the middle table as to block off from joining to tables together for a 4 top. The hostess didn’t offer the bar seats to us and ended up seating a few people behind us there. I have no idea what was going on but it was a really strange vibe, I’ve never felt so unwelcome at a hostess stand in my life. I’ll say it’s a one off but we ended up leaving and going to their old second location which is now called EBI on 4th street, they were happy to have us.

Obviously won’t write Hooks off but geeze - this left a really weird impression.

I havent eaten inside to experience the service or atmosphere but after ordering for take out I will not attempt to. Ordered general tso’s chicken for $15.50 and received a tray full of vegetables with seven pieces of small chicken. Also ordered a vegetable crunch roll, spring rolls and pork dumplings totaling $48 dollars and was absolutely robbed.

Gone down hill! Order vegetable fried rice no vegetables looked like tiny scraps of vegetables . Spider roll so thin and tiny couldn’t even pick up with fork without falling apart. Will not be back.

1st timer. I got take out. The service was good. The lady was very helpful & informative. Good prices. The rolls were SO GOOD, and it wasn't overly priced. I could definitely make Hook's the go-to sushi spot. There are so many things on the menu that I want to try.

Used to love this place before they switched to 1 waiter I think his name is James. Because we don't drink we get ignored. Had to ask for another waiter so we could put in our dinner order. The food is always good, but if you are into raw fish the sushi menu is limited. Plenty of cooked options.

I just moved to the area and tried this place for the 1st time. I sat at the bar with my dog and we loved it.

If you're a local who loves sushi, you've been to Hooks.

Ordering to go is never a good idea at this place. Forgetful, small rolls, horrible service when simply coming in to retrieve the order. Ichiban is FAR superior to this place.

Hooks consistently forgets chopsticks and sauces, so we have had to drive back for missing items the past 4-5 times we have ordered to-go. The rude high school server double-charged my card for a $60+ meal, showing no apology and rolling her eyes at me when we had to drive back in-person because she was not answering the phone, even though the restaurant was open for 40 more minutes.

There's a clear difference in the quality of food we received in the restaurant versus what we order for takeout... maybe we should have checked our bag first, but everything we left the restaurant with ended up directly in the trash. Shrimp summer rolls were definitely bad. We loved the sushi nachos in the restaurant.

We came here at 8.40pm and as soon as we were seated ordered our meals, which took around 10 or 15 min after a soup and salad, we started eating around 8.50pm and couldn’t eat in PEACE!!! they were staring at us, bring us the check and every second coming to the table saying something like “I am getting everything ready to go home” we were shocked by their UNPROFESSIONALISM because if the Kitchen closes at 9pm you still need to wait for people to finish their meals in peace, But if you dont want people there at 9 o’clock, well dont let guest came in after 8.30pm and dont need to make people feel uncomfortable!! WE WILL NEVER BE BACK ! Honestly make a favor to yourself and stay away from this place !!!

I'm not sure if they got a new sushi chef but the rolls I got were so tiny and barely had any meat in them. I don't think I'll be coming back to this establishment any time soon unfortunately.

Do yourself a favor and believe the reviews about the fish not being fresh. I've been here twice, trying to give it a second chance and the salmon nigiri had a smell coming from it. Besides that, I got the salmon poke bowl for lunch one day and nothing in the bowl was remotely fresh, the rice was old, the vegetables were equally gross. The salmon was chewy and smelled strong. I took two bites of the bowl and tossed the rest. If you're sushi picky, this isn't the place for you. If you just want cheap sushi and don't care about the quality, this is the place for you.

Firstly I dont eat raw fish anymore, I sold seafood for years. So my favorite rolls now are the shaggydog and surf and turf. The pad thai and bibimbop also regular order, meals come with salad and miso soup. Everything is great, consistent, reasonable. Staff are excellent. I also want to comment that sushi grade is flash frozen fish to kill parasites. Be careful eating raw fish that has never been frozen. I am sure Hooks like most places uses sushi grade for safety but like other sushi places they do sell escolar, which is banned in several countries and was banned here until 1992. Avoid anything with escolar (white tuna) as it will most likely ruin your night, or your pants.

Cozy place with attentive service, an extensive and creative menu, and incredibly delicious sushi. Japanese, Korean, and Thai dishes. So much to choose from - which is just fine, because we'll be back.

Really impressed with not only freshness and also how everything tasted homemade…including maybe even the wasabi. It was all that good. Asked the sushi chef what was the freshest fish. He gave me 3 types of fish. I ordered hamachi and tuna nigiri and it was not fresh at all. Smelled and tasted like it had been soaked to pull out the old fish smell. All of the fish choices I had were opaque and a little sticky. Not clear as fresh fish is when it is fresh. I get it that not all sushi eaters know the difference. That is why I asked before I ordered. When I returned it, no one said a thing. No offer for another fish that was fresh. I understood that to mean they did not have anything fresher. The vegetable roll was very good.

I go here every Sunday for a reason! I usually just get vegetarian sushi, so I cannot speak for the fish or meat dishes, but their roodles are also very good. I’ve always been met with hospitality and friendliness here, though it does get very busy each night. There is usually a wait if you are more than just a single diner, so heads up there if you’re on a time crunch.Very recommend.

What a fabulous find! I forgot to take a picture because we were so hungry. The Shaggy Dog roll was creative and delicious. Everything we ordered was yummy!

The negative, which isn't a big deal, The sake was over the top. It had a strong yellow tinge, which indicates it was over the top and not fresh. Sake should be clear/white. But since it was served hot, it was okay.

Overall, nice ambiance, great service and yummy food. Definitely coming back.

When I want a stone bowl bibimbap, this is a place for me. They even make it better than Korean Restaurants in the area, which there isn't many. The sushi also good and price is decent. There is not much parking but street parking wasn't bad. The north St Pete location has better parking and seating, but this location is closer to me.

Had a wide variety of sushi. Fish did not taste fresh and a lot of it tasted bad in general. Luckily it was free since the girlfriend brought it home but did not taste good.
