The steak and papaya salad 🔥🔥🔥

Diner Review №2

This place is the go-to place for lunch and dinner. Though there are not a lot of seating, the food was awesome. I recommend the sticky rice with meat!

Diner Review №3

It was awesome. It was the first time ive had Esan region Thai food which I guess is really similar to Lao food because a bunch of Laotion people live in that region. Anyways, we splurged and ordered 4 dishes and an appetizer: Mee ka ti (rice noodle in curry with minced pork), papaya salad, ribeye laab, fried tilapia, chive dumplings and extra sticky rice.

Diner Review №4

Price is a bit steep, especially for the sticky rice. Everything tasted very sweet

It's a cozy little spicy place. Quality food with fresh ingredients, their crispy duck is just something I could eat all the time untill I blow up lol.

Another one of my favorite spots! It’s not your typical Thai food—it’s uniquely authentic with an interesting and delicious menu. I absolutely love this place! The only downside is that it’s a bit small, so there can be a wait during dinner time.

Diner Review №17

Went to this place last year and we were not impressed. Dishes we ordered were subpar for the price, we won't be returning.

Diner Review №18

What started as a promising dining experience at a cozy, intimate restaurant quickly turned sour due to the lackluster service from the server. With a total of 11 adults seated across three tables in this small establishment, the stage was set for the server to provide attentive, personalized attention. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The server seemed distracted and disengaged, often hiding behind the counter and disappearing from view when we want to request something. In a space as compact as this restaurant, it was bewildering that the server could not maintain a consistent presence and visibility throughout the meal.

As the dinner progressed, the issues only compounded. The food was enjoyable, but the server's absence made it difficult for the diners to order additional items, such as dessert. By the time the meal was wrapping up, we even tried to arrange for a group photo, only to be met with an expression from the server that made it clear she was eager for the party to depart. Ultimately, we (6 adults) spent a sizable $240 on the dinner, but the lack of attentive, hospitable service left a sour taste that eclipsed the positive aspects of the dining experience. I would not be returning to this establishment, as the subpar customer service overshadowed any merits the restaurant may have otherwise possessed.

Diner Review №19

Very bad customer service bad attitude

Diner Review №20

Came here for dinner. The tom zabb soup was fine, the beef noodles soup was a bit too salty. The Hug Esan Papaya salad… not sure if it’s just the style (with Tum Plara) but we didn’t really like it, the pork jerky was rather tough and the I didn’t enjoy the texture of the sour pork sausage. The pork rinds weren’t crispy either. The Gai Yang with sticky rice was just very regular and nothing exciting. Probably just the mango sticky rice at the end was the only one that did not disappoint. Honestly a little sad as we looked forward to the meal.

Diner Review №21

Honestly, honestly, the worst Thai food that I have ever had. The fish is not fresh. It’s frozen. Everything is too sweet. I’m so disappointed. I couldn’t believe this is the Thai restaurant that I my Thai friend recommended

Diner Review №22

Grabbed takeout from here. Overall, pretty solid for what we ordered. We grabbed the nam khao tod, which was my favorite of the few dishes we got. Also got the tom zabb and neur nam tok, both of which were good. Recommend ordering it with some spice (at least mild) to get the most out of it. Good amount of food.

Diner Review №23

This place used to be my favorite but the food is not stable. Sometimes is salty , sometimes is too spicy. Their papaya salad with Thai anchovies is very salty and smell sometimes

Diner Review №24

This place isn’t to be missed! A traditional Esan restaurant is in the heart of Thai Town. With its impeccable cleanliness and mouthwatering flavors, this restaurant is a must-visit for food lovers.

First time trying Esan food and knew it was tasty but the dishes were very flavorful, and I appreciated how they spent time to teach how to eat the different dishes and constantly replenished my water.

Diner Review №31

This was our alternative to Sri Pra Thai; which closed early. Small place just 4 tables but super friendly service, we were seated immediately, our order of spicy papaya salad, chicken liver satay and grilled squid with sticky rice came in session, very flavorful. Was very impressed, will definitely be coming back.

Diner Review №39

I have been craving nam khao tod since living in Europe where SE Asian food is fairly basic. This did not disappoint! They made it spicy as I requested and gave me more herbs/lettuce for free when I'd run out! Note it's cash only.

Diner Review №42

This has been my go to Thai spot for years. It’s a really small restaurant and fits around 15 or so diners, so if you come for dinner you may need to wait for your seat. Pro tip - go for lunch or early dinner. My family and I recently dined here on a weeknight and got there around 6pm. By the time we were leaving, the place was packed.

My favorite thing to order is their Pla Pao set ($60) - which includes their grilled fish, choice of papaya salad, and another side. I always get their regular Tum Thai papaya salad, and customize it to extra sour, less sugar, and 3 chilis. Another pro tip - every restaurant has their own scale of mild, medium, spicy hot so just tell them exact number of chili! Hug Esan is the probably only restaurant I can think about that is able to make papaya salad to my taste.

The fish obviously is the star of the show - very fresh, perfectly cooked and flaky. I love eating it with their tangy red-orange sauce.

We also ordered their Gai Yang - recently it isn’t as good as I remembered and price was increased to $18.

Spring rolls is always a hit here - it comes with a sweet sauce and a side of lettuce, mint, and cilantro to wrap it up for a healthy twist. They also cut it up into bite size pieces so it’s easily shareable in a group.

Cash only establishment!

Nice Thai restaurant like a family vibes

Diner Review №44

Food are extremely delicious and authentic flavors however the atmosphere and space is extremely tiny; it’s very small space inside to the point you’ll elbow to elbow with other customers beside you.

Extremely flavorful dishes, very nice service, and cozy atmosphere. We had the papaya salad & the sour sausage crispy rice (nam khao tod), which did not disappoint. I haven’t had such a combination of tang and spice in a while. Definitely will be back again!

A unassuming northern Thai restaurant that looks like a reaidence from the outside. The flavora are bold, unique and unlike most Thai places in the city. Frog legs were meaty with dipping sauce. Crispy fish, pork, tender beef all with good amount of heat. Great authentic food, good portions, must try!

Diner Review №63

Fav Thai restaurant in the city

Diner Review №67

With the exception of the mok nor mai (steamed pork belly + bamboo shoots), I really wanted to love this place more. Very few things got the party-in-my-mouth feeling started, not the least the nam khao tod. The rice was too crispy and overall, the salad did not bring me joy the way a well-executed one does. The Larb Ped had some momentum, but again, not super exciting. The Hug Esan papaya salad didn’t rise to the occasion, either. I wonder if we just didn’t order the right things b/c I saw that the customers around us all ordered the grilled chicken and other grilled meats. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Diner Review №68

Diner Review №69

Diner Review №74

Super super super yummy northern thai food, super generous portions, a lot dishes you might not be familiar with but just go with it… we got the crispy tilapia larb (who woulda thunk) and it was amazing. Really friendly service too!!

Diner Review №75

The best “papaya salad “ feels like home. This place is under rated probably because of their size of the restaurant but trust me this place is hidden germs in Queen of Esan Thai food.

The “lab PED” duck salad also really fresh and testy.

%% update Dec 10, 2022

We been here many times since the first visit and never disappointed. There may be many Thai Esan restaurants around the area but one that I always choose is here. The food quality and taste never disappointed me and you can customize the level of spiciness here to meet your expectations. I am not hesitant to bring my 8 and 6 year old to this restaurant. In fact, they both love this restaurant!

Here is the lists of the menu I would recommend,
- Larb Ped Udon (Larb Duck)
- Yum Nam Know Tod (Crunchy fried rice with Thai Chiliy paste and preserved pork) This is awesome menu.
- Som Tum (Thai & Pra ra (Preserved fish) )
- Moo cook Phun ( Pork Shoulder with Roasted Rice) Not spicy for kid with sticky rice.
- Moo Tod num play (Pork Belly with fish source) kids friendly menu and its nice with Sticky rice
- Kai Yang (Grill Chicken) Another kids friendly menu. Very Crispy skin and a juicy boneless dark meat. This is one of the best! Try with their souces and that is another level!
- Larb Nua (If you don't eat pork or duck, this is alternative. Authentic favor and I completely love it!
- Pra Tod (Fried Fish) Crispy Fried Fish. Another kids friendly.

Tub wan (Spicy pork liver with roasted rice) is awesome if you want to taste authentic!

There are still more menu and surely I would recommend this place to my friends or family. One downside is the table is quite limited. You may call them to reserve the table if you have a big party. The level of service is exceptional.

=========================

Small but cozy restaurant for who wanted to taste the authentic north east Thai food. Service is very good. Combo set worth every dollar and suits 2 to 3 people. If you can resist another level of spicy, try the medium spicy instead of mild that will bring the favor to another level. I have visited this place almost every time I went to Queen. Love here!

Diner Review №78

Some of the most authentic Thai food NYC has to offer. You know you’re getting good Thai food when you’re the only non-Thai person there. Highly highly recommend ordering the Larb Pla, a crispy tilapia served with fresh veggies and sticky rice. The flavor was phenomenal, with the sauce being the best company to the fried fish - tangy, sweet, spicy, and an immense umami of the fish sauce. And remember to munch on every single piece of that crunchy tilapia (yes, even the small little bones)

Diner Review №79

Eat here!!!

Diner Review №80

Loved it, finding true authentic isaan food is hard in the USA. I've spent a couple years now in isaan, and finding that unique flavor is hard. My wife is Thai from isaan, and it help like a little piece of home for her.

Diner Review №81

The food was great! I love how their signature dishes are different from the typical Thai restaurants. Good portion sizes as well; one combo and an entree are good for three people.

Diner Review №82

I really enjoyed the papaya salad and the tub tim krob dessert, however the frog legs were served so dry I couldn’t tell what they tasted like. It was my first time trying them and I tried to reheat them even but the meat was just too dry and tough to understand it. It said it was supposed to be crispy but it wasn’t. It was my first time and I imagined it being succulent. You can see here after a light reheating they are kind of like the texture of a dry mushroom with dry meat inside. It’s hard to trust a place that would serve that especially with so much raw meat on the menu. It makes me question if they care about the preparation.

Diner Review №83

Great place to go in Queens for authentic issan food. Much different than most real northern Thai

Diner Review №84

I love north east Thailand food :) I went there with my friend for lunch. We ordered crispy fried pork belly come with authentic spicy dipping sauce, bamboo soup. Service is good and friendly. There are a lot more delicious food on a menu but I can't eat everything, lol so I will try another menu next time.

Diner Review №85

Diner Review №86

I used to like this place a lot. But recently they’ve been cutting corners. I’m disappointed that the container is not fully filled. This is not first time. I’m the type of person who gets irritated when my plate is not full. Even though it’s not full, then reach to the line. It’s a cultural thing for me to see things full. And I believe many Asians will understand this. This happens recently. I don’t know if management changed or kitchen personnel changed or policy changed. But please make sure food and drinks are almost full. I don’t like seeing this which is sad.

Diner Review №87

North Eastern Thai Stye! Edit: i went there today 7/29 and way much better than last time!

Diner Review №88

Extremely delicious food. Made-to-order spice levels, which show authenticity and care for the customer (since most people can't handle legitimate Thai spicy). Very generous portions for the price. Super friendly service. Chill atmosphere. I wish there were half stars because this place deserves more than 'just' a 4

Diner Review №90

5 of us came here on a holiday (Memorial Day) and got a lot of dishes to share! We got two types of papaya salad and enjoyed both. The steamed fish was definitely a highlight! The fish was so fresh and the sauces that came with it was amazing. The service was wonderful and the owner (I think) talked to us about the food and how to enjoy the food properly.

We did wait for about 30 minutes for a table but the place is quite small. Though, this is one of those places that is worth the wait if you want authentic Thai food!

Diner Review №91

One of the best Thai restaurants in NYC. This restaurant focuses on northern Thai food which you often do not fine. Therefore you will not see the typical Tom yum soup or pad Thai. Instead, signature dishes are in there signature Tom zap soup, fried fish, and papaya salad. They have a variety of papaya salads with my fav being the one with salted egg yolk. Recommend ordering the set for best bang for buck and sharing. Set gets you an appetizer or soup, protein entree, and sticky rice.

Diner Review №93

It's a hidden gem for Thai authentic food. I enjoyed every dishes I tried here. But larb pla and pork crepe are my go-to dishes, I ordered it everytime I eat here. I would definitely come back! However, the location is more of a small shop, sometimes you might not find a table. Take out or ubereats is good as well.

I would never say anything is better than my mom's cooking, but this might be better than my mom's cooking... lol.

Consistency is the biggest difference-maker at restaurants and every time has been phenomenal. 😋

Every one of their signatures is a must. The nam khao is the best I've ever had... and this is coming from someone who grew up eating this food every day.

Thank you for being my home away from home :)

Diner Review №129

Good taste with variety of choices that are especially food from northern thailand.

Diner Review №130

I love thai food and i love strong flavors. This restaurant was an OK for me. The noodle soup tasted sweet. Im not sure if it was the usual taste but it wasnt into my liking. The grilled liver tasted it was boiled first then grilled. Didnt have that grilled flavor. The pad kapraw, i think that was the name, or the ground pork with herb, I tried this from other thai restaurant, we only asked mild on heat but not on other flavors. It was a little bland for my taste but maybe it was good for americans who dont like strong flavors. The place was 4 star for me. It was cozy and there were shields in between guests. The server was very nice. Over all it was 3 stars because of the dishes but dont get me wrong, its just that, if i am going to a thai/malay/indian/ etc. i like to taste those flavors from those regions. I mean that distinct flavors...

Diner Review №131

Diner Review №132

Thai food that isn't dumbed down. The menu has a good variety of options but you need to be a little adventurous to really appreciate this place. The seafood dishes will be where they really shine, but if you must - the pad thai is very good. Price point is good - not dirt cheap (which you may expect for a Queens hole-in-the-wall) but you are really getting food that is fresh and well-prepared.

Diner Review №133

If you want Real Northern Thai Esan food you MUST try Hug Esan. This restaurant is like nothing else in Queens. Real Thai people eat here and from what I see and hear they are 100% authentic. I've been to Udon Thani and I can tell you yes not like anywhere else in NYC.

I grew up in Minnesota. The Twin Cities. During that time I got to experience Southeast Asian cusine in many restaurants, but more so in the houses and at the dinner tables of many of friends whose families were like my own. Of the different cultural dishes, the food from Laos is by far my favorite.

Now I live in NYC and have had to travel to Jersey and even Connecticut, to find the food I consider to be my favorite..

That was until I discovered and finally made it out to Hug Esan.

Now I can enjoy eating in NYC.

Diner Review №142

Mom-and-pop authentic Thai food from Esan. This is not your typical Thai food. This is the Real deal. They were featured in New York Times which means this place is solid legit. I had the the crispy fried rice and chose mild spicy. They don't play with their spiciness so prepare your taste buds with ultimate spiciness. Also, they have 11 choices of papaya salad and some go with vermicelli noodles (I have not heard that before). For appetizers, we had pork crepe which I have not heard before. It basically looks a broken dumpling. Venture out to Elmhurst, Queens and try this Thai food in the Esan region. You won't be disappointed.

Diner Review №143

I’m sitting here now eating dinner and it is phenomenal. Tastes like the food we ate on the streets of Chiang Mai. Get their Hug Esan signature dishes, especially the Pla Pao, Gai Yang and Nam Khao Tod. SO good. Super authentic. Also it’s BYOB!!

Diner Review №146

Hug Esan has become my new favorite Thai place. The flavors are intense and bright, nothing is overly sweet as you find in more Americanized Thai places. Perfect Papaya Salad and the crispy Rice Salad is out of this world. The Jaew sauce served with menu menu items is perfectly balanced: tart, spicy, funky and again, not too sweet. Every dish we had was greatly enjoyed. Their lunch specials are a bargain and a half. The staff is lovely and gracious and how can those brightly colored floral table tops not make you happy?

Diner Review №170

I came here for lunch with a friend. I had the curry noodles lunch special which came out to $11 and my friend had the fried fish lunch special, the one that's been very popular amongst their customers and is about $13. The lunch special comes with soup and spring rolls. The soup had an unexpected flavor. It was sour and sweet, and refreshing. Overall, it was an okay meal. I would like to go back and try other dishes from their menu. I think I can find something that I like even more. The service was excellent. The employees are very friendly and polite.

I ordered their papaya salad to-go once and I really liked that dish. It was crunchy, tangy, and light but still satisfied me.
