Established in 1994, Spices Asian Restaurant is in Historic Cleveland Park. Having a variety of dishes made to excite your taste buds. Using authentic recipes from different parts of Asia, we will make your dining experience one to never forget.
YOU CAN SKIP THIS PLACE. It looks better than it tastes. The food is lackluster. I give it a six out of 10 (6/10). it’s geared towards tourists, going to the zoo and other attractions in the area.
If you’re looking for quality food or anything authentic, this is not the place and anyone who thinks that this food is good, I’m sorry but they just don’t know good food.
If you want real duck go to Duck Chang‘s in Annandale or Peking gourmet in Falls Church. I live in DC, but I drive to the suburbs for those places. I was hoping to find a good duck in DC, and I’m going to have to still keep looking, because this place is not it. The sushi, the soups and everything else looked mediocre at best.
Every time I am in DC my friend and I venture over to Spices, a wonderful sushi bar that is to die for. Between the friend and helpful staff and cozy, yet modern, atmosphere, spices has a very wide variety of sushi, noodle dishes and other menu items that will leave you wanting more. Highly recommend whenever you are in DC.
Spices is such a consistently great place for lunch and dinner. The duck wraps and double toro roll are divine. Also love the fried banana dessert. Service is great - definitely recommend coming here!
We ordered half big duck, some Nigiri sushi, mango sticky rice, and aged tangerine beef peel. Overall pretty good, nigiri sushi have thick fish meat on top. But the aged tangerine peel beef is somewhat misleading. No tangerine flavour and it tastes more like an American Chinese dish-deep fried thick crusted beef with thick sauce on top. Not a fan. Duck is good. Mango not sweet but stick rice tastes good. Good location 6 mins walk from the zoo. No wait times.
Very impressed by this restaurant. As a starter we ordered the crabmeat wonton and spring onion cake. The wonton were superb with a delicious horseradish sauce. They were filled with real crab meat, not the fake stuff. The sushi platters were wonderful and the desserts were a piece of heaven. With it we had an extremely tasty pineapple sake.
The ambience is classically elegant and the service could hardly be better. Our waitress was extremely friendly, courteous and very attentive. The whole experience was wonderful, we will gladly come back.
Highly recommend.
Our favorite sushi in DC! Double toro roll is perfectly balanced, the Hawaiian roll is so creative, and every appetizer we've had are delicious. The honey fried banana is the perfect dessert to end the meal. Service and atmosphere are also always great :)
Yes. This food is good. The sushi is very, very satisfying. I got 6 pieces of Nigiri sushi, a spicy salmon handrolled piece, and the vanilla mochi ice cream... and it was all very delicious.
The dishes had beautiful presentation, the fish had a lovely bite and texture, the rice wasn't overly dry like you might find with grocery store sushi, the handrolled piece had a lovely layering to each bite, and it was all just very good. It's a pretty plain opinion from me about this: this place has great sushi.
The mochi ice cream was also treated with respect: in terms of its presentation and my enjoyment of it.
The restaurant itself was fairly open and spacious. There were many small tables, to one of which we were seated. I didn't check the bathrooms, unfortunately, so I can't comment on cleanliness or maintenance. Overall, however, the place seemed well kept and generally well treated.
I really have no complaints, from my perspective on the sushi itself. The server was courteous and checked in from time to time. She accidentally gave us the wrong receipt at the end, but thankfully I checked it before she realized.
This is a simple review. Excellent sushi. You pay per piece, if you want Nigiri, otherwise pay by the roll or entrée. I hope my included pictures help entice you to try this restaurant. I recommend everything pictured, and hope to come back for more in the future.
5/5 stars from me.
It’s a great place to have delicious Asian food I highly recommended this place.

Staple of Asian fusion for the neighborhood, still offers curbside pickup in the back.

Amazing sushi with so many unique rolls! The Double Toro and Hawaiian rolls are must haves!! For dessert, fried bananas are soooo good!!!
This is hands down my kids favorite restaurant in Cleveland Park. The avocado sushi, edamame and Japanese sodas seem to be a winning combination for the pre-teen crowd. The ginger salad is a standout for the rest of us.
Food and service were great. We tried the drunken noodles and curry laksa. We will definitely go back
Great food. The curries were very well done.
Excellent. Start with the Japan Dumplings. Then go for the Pad Thai.
Had great lunch here. Asked for General Tao Tofu, and it was delicious! Service was super nice and helpful, food was fresh, very tasty and just what we needed. Thank you, will recommend you!
The food was excellent. The portions beyong filling. The drinks and atmosphere added to the overall excellent dining atmosphere while giving the comfort of a happy hour vibe.
Me and my children enjoyed everything about this place thank you 😊
We reserved a large group close to when the kitchen was closing, but the service was great and food was still delicious.
Loved the fresh amazing sushi and salmon dish!
Honey glazed sea bass -a stand out!
The prices have become crazy high.
Excellent
Boa
I ordered Pho Bo and it was good. Not great. But good nonetheless.
Excellent food. The teriyaki chicken was moist and flavorful. Really liked the fried calamari. They have a happy hour. The $6 tuna roll was delicious. Some items felt a little pricy but probably average for the area.
I love this place. The food is AMAZING.
I had the drunken noodles and very disappointed. Sauce was watery, noodles were over cooked. My friend sent hers back! I wish I did too. I was in the bathroom as soon as I got home. I'm assuming I had a mild case of food poisoning. I decided to try my leftovers the next day (I know stupid, but thought maybe it was the sushi) and once again, same bathroom experience! Definitely NEVER eating there again!
A must visit! Amazing happy hour, fresh food, and fast service. Wanda provided exceptional service.
Spices is always delicious. It’s one of our go-tos in the neighborhood and has literally never been a disappointment. When you have a spot like this, it’s not easy to remember to give them a review. It’s just such a part of our routine you forget how important online reviews are for restaurants.
My personal favorites are their lychee martinis and crab wontons. The sushi is always fresh and delicious and the staff are always very kind.
The place looked amazing but the food was not good in my opinion.
I love coming here for sushi! The staff is always so welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere is great. Feels like a family neighborhood place. Sushi is fabulous and the price is right
Food is not very spicy or so inauthentic it was borderline insulting, but isn't bad for American Asian fare. We got a steak knife for noodle dishes? Imagine going to an "American" burger place in Asia and someone giving you a spoon. Really random dish and plate shapes too. Service was 5/5, atmosphere was 4/5. A bit pricey for what you get. Would still go again.
Hakka eggplant 🍆 ♥️!
We had a variety of dishes: Pho Bo, mei goreng, fried rice, Bulgogi Kinchi fried rice, mongolian barbecue. All were excellent.
Half duck is almost for 2. Service is very quick and with smile.
Stop in here while on a trip to DC and it was amazing. I got the teriyaki salmon and everything (salmon, vegetables, rice) were cooked perfectly. The food was flavorful. Not to mention the lady at the bar was very friendly, and was diligent on checking with the kitchen to see the status of my takeout food.
I would certainly come here again if I am in the area.
The staff was so nice and the food was so good. Highly recommend the crab wontons!
Whole duck was a half. My mom and I went here this month never again. We get home and it was a small lunch instead of dinner. Never knew anybody would eat a burrito with duck and it was with cucumbers. With paid for rice they don’t give you any side we paid $17 each for rice. We got home and had all bones and leg with a slice of meat that wasn’t a whole duck.
Their food and service is amazing. Also their rates are also quite affordable compared to others.
Stopped by to pickup some Sushi for lunch.
Ordered the Sushi and 2 rolls.
Sushi was sublime. Very fresh. Plenty of ginger and Wasabi. The two rolls were Tuna and California. Also excellent. Filled me up good.
I love the tofu fries and the laksa here. Just not a fan of plain green beans in the laksa, but the soup was delicious and very spacious compared to how it looks outside
Sooooo, good. Six different diners and we all left happy. Ginger ice cream is to die for.
Always great! Best Sushi, Tempura, and Pad Thai
Lovely space offering delicious Asian fare. The scallion pancakes and red curry pork were both prepared well and tasted great. I will be making return visits.
Love this place!
Great Food, Amazing service (handled our 2 kids and stroller well after a zoo trip) in a nice small atmosphere restaurant
Their food is excellent. Always fresh. Huge portion sizes. Great variety. Sonya Armfield
A good variety of Asian food, everything from sushi to pad Thai. I have never had a bad meal here, everything is tasty & nicely plated. The service is both friendly & efficient. The decor is bright & pleasant.
The place is beautiful, clean, great attentive service. The food is nicely presented and it is very tasty.
One of our favorite go-to restaurants.

Great Pho and curry soup.
I wish I could give Spices a higher rating. I've been going to Spices for as long as I can remember. My family starting going there before I was born. Each menu item is filling and delicious. My personal favorites are the chicken satay and golden tofu(although it was recently removed). Even after traveling to Japan and Vietnam(mainly cities of Tokyo, Osaka, and Ho Chi Minh) and trying authentic Asian cuisine, nothing compares.
Went in with my wife and toddler for lunch. Was promptly seated. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and directed us to the vegetarian items. Ended up ordering the maki zen. The food took a bit longer then expected but when it arrived the waiter informed us that it took longer because they switched to vegetarian oil for our tempura! Appreciate the attention to detail. Also the food was delicious 😋
I have been a loyal customer for 16 years, ALWAYS ordering Ginger Chicken as my go to dish (+sushi). But you have taken it off the menu to everyone's dismay! Can you PLEASE bring Ginger Chicken back?! We would be so grateful!!!!
This is my favorite Asian restaurant. I have been coming here for years and I have not been disappointed in any of my visits or pick up orders. The food is always delicious. The service is quick and attentive and very friendly. This is a gem in the neighborhood and DC. I would certainly recommend visiting them.

5/5 stars from me.
Customer services are very rude. I requested a plastic bag, and Ahe denied giving it to me. She not even said about payment for it. She just doesn'twant to give it to me. And turns around.
Very impressed by this restaurant. As a starter we ordered the crabmeat wonton and spring onion cake. The wonton were superb with a delicious horseradish sauce. Highly recommend.
Been going here all my life, but since I became vegetarian 6 years ago I'm really disappointed with how few options there are. In particular, a lot of the noodles and fried rice options could easily be vegetarian (and are at any other restaurant), but for some reason aren't. Otherwise a great restaurant!
Lunch was on point! Yum!
Large menu to please everyone.
Wonderful place. Very clean!
The food was excellent and the staff was great. We were seated right away when we came in. The prices were reasonable. We will definitely go back.
♿️= Wheelchair accessible, spacious, and accommodating friendly staff
Had a truly wonderful dinner here! Food was exceptionally well prepared and nicely presented, portion sizes were quite generous, and the service was attentive and friendly. In general I am leery of "pan-ethnic" restaurants, but this one is a real winner. We started with a wilted ginger and shredded cabbage salad that was redolent of fresh ginger, cold, crisp, and refreshing. Vietnamese summer rolls were perfectly prepared, as was the accompanying fish sauce-based dipping sauce. Scallion pancakes and kimchi dumplings were delicious, and very nicely fried. Our vegetarian daughter had vegetable fried rice and sautéed wrinkled string beans, both of which she (and we) loved. My spicy chicken and eggplant was perfectly seasoned and spiced (note, made with ground, rather than sliced, chicken as I am used to having it at other Chinese restaurants.) I asked for it extra spicy, and at first I thought perhaps they had gone too light on the spicing, but then the very nice "afterglow" kicked in and I realized that it had been spiced perfectly. My wife had, and very much enjoyed, Vietnamese-style grilled shrimp and vermicelli, which she said was comparable to ones she's had at top tier Vietnamese restaurants. Green tea cheesecake with a mango sauce and toasted coconut ice cream rounded out an excellent meal. We left there satisfied and happy (and with enough leftovers for two substantial lunches). We'll be back!
Spices has never failed to impress me. The menu is huge and they do everything well. Our favorites are the spiced tofu fries, chicken satay, Pho Bo, whole duck, whole fried fish, and Curry Laksa. ALL AMAZING! Also, this is the only place in the U.S. where I can get Northern-style Pho Bo (and I lived in Houston - when I lived in DC, I went to Eden center often) - it truly made me feel like I am home (back in Ha Noi). The last time we were at Spices, we randomly ordered a stir-fry dish with eggplants/beef and it was beyond delicious. I am always impressed that they do such a good job with every dishes with such a massive menu! My go-to place for Southeast Asian/home-cooked meals craving!
We sat outside, and the construction noise from across the street was rather loud. However, food was delicious, menu had a lot to choose from, and our server was super nice and accomodating. Portions were very good for the price. Overall, we would definitely recommend it, and we hope to be back soon.
Good drinks and food. Richard was a great bar tender
This place was amazing everything was excellent food drinks and service will be back the Korean wing Korean rib Japan dumplings are amazing the BlackBerry smash was a smash
What I've tried so far:
Green onion pancakes ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Sushi ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fried sea bass with basil ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Laksa ⭐⭐⭐ (this is laksa lemak not asam laksa but even so, it's underwhelming)
Roast duck with plum sauce ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Crispy squid appetizer ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wanda is perfect!!! He makes sure you got your order right, he is polite and invested in you having a good time, he is very knowledgeable about recipes, he is a keeper
Very expensive for the mediocre food offered. The $22 sushi tray (5 pieces of sushi with one roll) had one cooked shrimp, three decent pieces of sushi, one piece that smelled fishy and the roll had cooked crab, no raw fish. Cheap and not well made, frankly. I brought the smelly fish to the attention of one of the servers (not mine, he was busy) who smelled it and stated it was fine. She only offered a replacement, which I did not want. No price reduction, no apology. The $15 Szechwan pickled vegetable green beans were also a disappointment. The flavor was good, but they were basically green beans with sauce. Nothing Szechwan about them, although when I asked I was offered chili sauce as a condiment. There's got to be better sushi out there for these prices.
I ordered the Volcano Roll for delivery. Speedy delivery and delicious sushi.
Spices? Oh spice me up! This is the best Asian fusion restaurant in the DC metro area. When I first got the duck here, my life changed for the better. I was absolutely quacked up on the tender meat from this gourmet bird. My beautiful girlfriend got the bulgogi kimchi fried rice and I can’t say I’ve ever pleased her like that dish did. Listen, when you’re in DC, go spice up your life at Spices.
Very bad service, poor customer service.
Gran atención.
Good sushi, reasonable prices and friendly service! Definitely a good place for fresh rolls!
Everything here is delicious. They might make the best general tsos chicken ever. The drunken noodles are really great too.
Love sushi in general and this is up there with my favorite. Pokémon roll was fun (and good) to try along with the Volcano. Everyone here is nice and the environment is great too. They open the door/wall to outside which is refreshing. I’d recommend it to anyone that likes sushi 😁
This was my first experience having Red Curry and it was delicious. Also our waitress was caring and courteous.
The best food, music is great , service fantastic!! Lee is the best
Always love this place. Be sure to try the mango with sticky rice (for dessert)!
I was visiting from out of state, we came in fifteen minutes before closing, and despite that, received excellent and friendly service. Highly recommend the vietnamese spring rolls!!
Good, fast service. Drink menu is small. Ginger salad and Mongolian Shrimp stir fry were favorites (lots of shrimp!). Kimchi dumplings were ok, but lacked some flavor/spice.
Kind and welcoming staff, fantastic drinks, great food. Highly recommend!
Dined on the duck entree. Yum-O! Excellent! Fresh, well prepared. One of my favorites is the sea bass spring rolls. Beautiful decor. Love the open picture windows. Great local restaurant or even destination restaurant. Authentic. Reasonably priced. Very nice staff.
Had the noodle boat, it was one of the best meals I've ever had. Will definitely go back.
I love this restaurant and make it a point to visit when I am in the city. Consistently amazing, high quality food and ambiance. Lots of veggie options and the staff is always quick to let me know of which dishes contained fish sauce.
Spices is a great local Asian restaurant located a half block from the Cleveland Park Metro. As a vegetarian that have great tofu options including tofu fries with delicious spices and my favorite, Bali Tofu (pictured). It is seared and has a delicious peanut based sauce. Everyone who has eaten here with me and orders anything from noodles, chicken, beef to sushi has always enjoyed the dishes. Can get them spiced to your comfort.
Great spot if you are in the area, fresh and quick turn around time.
Okay food. Sushi temp was a bit questionable. Service is awkward. Prices are way too high for the quality, or lack thereof. This was my second visit. I walked out before ever even being seated the first time I visited. I literally stood in front of the sushi line, asked if I should seat myself, and was completely ignored. Every employee on the floor that evening walked past me but nobody would acknowledge me, so I simply walked out. The fact that I returned a second time is a miracle, but I honestly regret it.
Decent food, poor atmosphere.
I’ll be honest. The sushi is not bad. However, it’s not a quality beyond what you can find at a grocery store. What’s upsetting is that they charge like $20 for a small amount of sushi. Other items on the menu are average. I wouldn’t come back.
Sushi is generally okay but little dry. Other food, such as Korean galbi and salad is not recommended. In general, food is too expensive for the quality you’re getting. I usually don’t mind spending more money for quality but this place lacks quality for the price they are charging.
So-so at best. The food is really salty and sweet, over seasoned and as a Korean I can surely say this is not authentic Korean or Japanese food. My server didn't even notice we didn't have a QR scan code until we had to ask for a menu. The sushi (cold food) came after my hot plates were already finished (why exactly..?). I lived in the area for about 4 years now and I recently made my first visit; probably will not return because the prices are high and the food is mediocre. Btw what you are seeing in the pic is $20+.
They have a giant sushi boat that I’ll 100% try to order next time.
Food is consistently fresh and delicious. Servers are always nice!
The good here is great! They have a wide selection of Asian food - so far, I've had Thai, Vietnamese, and Japanese dishes. My favorite combo is the shrimp Thai fried rice and chicken sate skewers. I usually have to take home half of the Thai fried rice.
Superb!!!
Excellent
Had an amazing experience here tonight! Quiet spot with amazing service, beautiful looking sushi and great food. Enjoyed a great dinner with friends. We all had a nice spicey shrimp and mushroom soup packed with good size shrimps and tons of mushrooms. I also enjoyed the drunken noodles and my friends enjoyed the basil eggplant dish. Service was kind and helpful in navigating the menu! Get the spicy sauce on the side (made in house)
Also following all COVID precautions if this is of concern :)
I'm so sorry, but this experience was very very dull and underwhelming. Perhaps it was an off night. We only ordered 2 appetizers and were not inspired to order more. The music was barely audible, bad sound quality and was a radio station with commercials. On a positive note, the waiter was very sweet and the sake and beer were delish so there's that. I had a gift card to burn, but I don't think I'll be back as I'm not tantalized by the ambiance nor the menu items. 😬
Delicious! Great for date night and chill vibes!
Delicious!
Great service, nice atmosphere, beautiful decorations, and All of the food my family got at this restaurant was both aesthetically pleasing and amazingly delicious. We order from
Spices every time we are in the area. We've had Honey Roasted Sea Bass, Rainbow Roll,
Lemongrass Chicken, Green Curry in Brass Wok, Volcano Roll, Dragon Roll, Firefly Calamari, mango sticky rice for dessert, and the Big Duck-- all were so delicious! We'll be back to try other items on their menu. Not only was the food tasty, the friendly staff made us feel truly welcomed.
I ordered the kimchi dumplings, tofu fries, and maki. The tofu fries are great. Definitely will go back for them. The dumplings were tasty too. The sushi (veggie) is good but wasn't fresh. I did go right before they close, so that could have been it. Would NOT eat their sushi again but will go back for other meals.
This is a nice, local Asian restaurant that has been here quite a while. They now have seating outside as well as their inside dining. It's a 3-minute walk from the Cleveland Park Metro. The service is very good. We love the Curry Laksa (spicy noodle soup).
Wonderful experience! They treated me like royalty for my birthday. Personable yet quiet atmosphere, where you can truly enjoy yourself without the excess chatter.
Very good food! And wonderful costumer service!
Love the food here, asian fusion, with southeast Asian, Korean, Chinese, japanese
Good fusion mix of a few Asian cuisines! Lovely service and a nice place to get that Green curry you have been wanting.
GREAT RESTAURANT... EXCELLENT SERVICE
The fish seems really fresh, and my husband loves the Chirachi at Spices! I think he could eat here everyday... The service is also really nice and thoughtful.
so very nice people.
Delicious and good service!!!
Amazing outdoor streatery! Best set up I've seen during the pandemic.
Always so good.
Our dining experience was HORRIBLE! We will NOT return to Spices! Our recent visit was after in-door dining was allowed in DC. Poor quality and waste of money for $14.95 and entree. Avoid this place at all cost. They have even reduced their portion sizes and thankful that it was less this time around. Spices used to be one of our favorite restaurants. My wife and I ordered two Pad Thai’s; one chicken (fully spiced) and one beef with medium spice. Both had no flavor at all. The ‘chef’ deserves to be sent back to culinary school. The noodles were thick and was not cooked well. The tofu was rubbery and soggy. Bamboo shoots distasteful! My wife refused to eat her share and we left in disgust. Very sad indeed! We need the old and quality Spices back in-business where every dish had the attentive serving of LOVE! Please don’t disgrace oriental cuisine.
Great food!
I had a very pleasant dining experience here the other night with very little time I was able to come in and enjoy some of their delicious Korean kimchi fried dumplings and Kirin Japanese beer which was amazing and filling. Very friendly employees and waitress. Relaxing ambience with nice outdoor dining and bonfires. Definitely looking forward to returning back at another time
The food as always was stellar. We have been ording from Spices for years but the last 2 times the same delivery driver was not only late but outright rude..he actually refused to give us our food unless we gave him a bigeer tip! What! Sorry but we are done here until they get some real help.
Fabulous food, as usual.
My favorite place. I love the suicide plate. Spicy and delicious
