About Us

Muu Kara or Mu Kratha is a southeast Asian cooking method. Muu means pork. Ka Ta represents the pan for cooking. Muu Ka Ta is similarly to Korean BBQ but we have soup around the pan.

How to eat Muu Ka Ta is you pick raw ingredients and cook them yourself on a tabletop grill. Traditionally, the tabletop grill has a raised dome with small holes where you can cook your meats and a space surrounding the dome to cook vegetables, fish balls, and mushrooms in a broth. The sliced meat is usually pre-marinated, and the broth is lightly flavored, so you actually only have to toss the ingredients into the pan and wait for them to be cooked, and then you can dipping with sauce or you can eat like soup and with sauce.

Wonderful food. Friendly service. I've been coming to SF every year since 1998. This was in the top five of best meals I've had. Go there.

A perfect meal combining hotpot and BBQ🤤🤤🤤 It reminded me of something I had as a child in Taiwan, so I was thrilled to find a place like this in SF. The marinated meats and scallops were incredible. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but worth the visit, even if you end up smelling like BBQ for a few hours!

Making one item oder 30 min I don’t know why???

Always a fun time here! I've been here on multiple occasions with big groups. We usually get the combo sets and add on if we feel we want more food. Service is pretty good and the ladies working here are always very nice to us. Inside is pretty small with only a few tables, but I usually do reservations since l've been with larger groups.
Highly recommended this place.

Had my birthday dinner here - the food was delicious, the staff were so so friendly and kind and accommodating, and the vibes inside are very fun!! Highly recommend. We did hotpot + Thai bbq + sides and everything was amazing - definitely don’t miss the papaya salad

So traditional and authentic Thai street food, don’t forget to try their Thai’s BBQ style, you gonna love it🤭

Diner Review №8

I went when they first opened with a friend. This was my second visit. As before it is a fantastic place to eat. Everything was delicious and the staff were really attentive and nice. Everything we had was excellent, and the Thai Iced Tea was better than any I've had in SF.

Diner Review №9

I came here to deal with my homesick and it helped. Good food and vibe, but overpriced

Diner Review №10

This Thai BBQ spot in SF is an absolute gem! The food is packed with bold flavors—highlights include the Lek Pla-Ra, an incredible mix of rice noodles, shrimp, squid, and a tangy fermented fish dressing, and the Grilled Beef Intestines, which were perfectly smoky and tender. The three house-made dipping sauces, especially the cilantro-lime chili one, elevated every bite. The ambiance is vibrant and full of warm, Southeast Asian street-food vibes. Service was friendly and attentive, with great recommendations. Perfect for group dinners or a fun night out. If you love smoky, spicy, and authentic, this place won’t disappoint!

This restaurant is a Thai BBQ spot that’s truly unique and authentic! It’s not just about the BBQ—they also serve delicious Northeastern Thai dishes. Every dish is packed with flavor, and the service is fantastic with super friendly staff!

Diner Review №21

Food was fine (3/5). Portions: understandable given current circumstances (3/5). Service was great (4/5).

Kinda wish that the "broth moat" was bigger so I can get my spoon in there to put into my bowl but no worries, just happy they're carrying on the same-ish concept as their previous owners of the space (Dancing Bull) as I was def a fan of them.

My only issue on my first dining experience there was that there was a huge Labrador in the restaurant and the group seemed like they were cool with the staff. Fine. But it clearly wasn't a service dog as it was barking up a storm and it kept on pacing around and shaking to the point where I saw dog hair fall from above and land on my uncooked meat & vegetables. I took my boyfriend there for his birthday and we were a bit disappointed with that. The dog even got in my personal space (nose was all up in my hands and lap looking for food) as they were leaving the joint.

I get that restaurants are struggling... and denying service to a potential group hurts their profits but it just sucks when I'm forced to dine there with factors that should've been handled by the severs and/or FOH supervisor.

Diner Review №22

Food is constantly great here, friendly staff always. The first and only place I’ve ever had Thai hotpot/grill, so I don’t have any other to compare it to, but it’s a thumbs up from me! Usually do the set for 2 and it’s plenty of food for both people. It’s been great seeing this place get more and more popular, glad to have a unique Thai restaurant like this one. FYI, like any place with a grill, can be a little smoky and your clothes/hair might be smelling afterwards!

Diner Review №23

Exactly as what previous highly rated reviews had said - great food and service! The hot pot is delicious, with a tom yum-type soup that will leave you finishing the pot clean.
Highly recommend the fried noodles or rice, both have beautiful wok-hei flavour and a bit of Thai sourness to make it stand out against other cuisines versions. Definitely go with a big group to try most of the menu!

We stopped in for the first time last night without knowing what to expect. The building last housed a Korean BBQ place and the stove hoods are still keeping the place mostly smoke free.
The decor is all new and it's modern and playful. The staff is super-friendly and very helpful with newcomers unfamiliar with a format that's part hot-pot and part BBQ.
We ordered too much but regret nothing. The corn salad was a side dish that begged to be a star. Definitely going back for the bucket soju cocktails. Would be fun for a group of 8 or so.

Absolutely delicious! Great experience all around, our server Kara was such a sweetheart and was so attentive. One of the best meals I’ve had, everything was so flavorful! I highly recommend going late at night for happy hour :)

Diner Review №41

This place is surprisingly amazing. They have charcoal for bbq grill. We had a large group without reservations, so we couldn’t experience the charcoal, but the food was still pretty good. The food is so authentic like those street food in Thailand. The grill and hot pot experience was different, and we loved it. They have free Thai milk tea for check in on yelp. The service was quick and our server was friendly with great explanation and recommendations. This place deserves more than 5 stars

Wonderful experience! When we first went in the restaurant, we were pleasantly surprised that the bbq and hotpot pan is heated by charcoal. This is a huge plus because the charcoal gives a lot of intensive heat that helped all the meant get the perfect browning. I personally really enjoy cooking so I was able to enjoy the meal. By the way, the dipping sauces are all wonderful!

Diner Review №46

Great late night spot w delicious food and soju. Food is the closest to our food adventures in BKK, sans the heat and humidity. It's a hidden gem in the City and we're happy to have found it en route to the North Bay. It's become our spot for late night dining after late arrivals at SFO.

Diner Review №48

Diner Review №49

Love the meat options and assorted veggies too, and the DIY charcoal bbq is fun to keep yourself busy with.
Great place to catch up with friends.
Coupling it with soju, and you got yourself a winner. Must order - Papaya salad and the scallops. The sauces will keep you yearning for more.

Diner Review №50

Tried here for the first time with friends from out of town and I am a little disappointed. The portion was small for the price or maybe I’m still not used to the inflation in SF, since I moved up from LA. The waitresses keep trying to up sell, maybe they are operating on a commission based not tip based system. If only the portion was generous we would really just have pass them a bigger tip anyway. So the owner know how to extract the most profit for the house? Anyway we did drink a little (enough to get a hang over the next day for me, but I’m a light weight) , and with all the year in Thailand never had Soju with a Thai meal, only beer (if they had Beer Laos instead of Thai or Laotian beer, I would have given them 5 stars just for that), Thai wine cooler, Thai whiskey such as Mekong, or Thai rum like Sang Som would work too. Unfortunately there was none on the menu. Papaya Salad didn’t have much papaya in it, mostly cucumber. Maybe they ran out of raw papaya? But, hey this is SF, so I guess that’s the price you got to pay for “street food”. Just really make me miss food in a giant “pot” back home in Thailand more. They earned a 3 stars with this concept restaurant from me. At least the servers are friendly. Now just serve beer Laos and this will give an old backpacker a flashback to the good time had back on that slow boat in South East Asia.

Great new hotpot/grill spot that uses real charcoal grills. Fun atmosphere thats fitting of fun vibrancy Thailand has to offer. Street style stools, pop art, neon lights and thai flare really add to the uniqueness of this style of hot pot.

This is by far my favorite Thai restaurant in SF! Please give their garlic rice a try, it’s amazing! The bbq pork is perfect, and so is the rest of the meat. I wasn’t expecting for this place to be so good, but they beat my expectations. The homemade sauces were incredible!

Best server ever! I forgot to ask her name but thanks a lot for making our night so fun! Food tasted so good and authentic without breaking a bank. Highly recommend to try their papaya salad with corn and salted egg. The green and red sauce is so good too. Not overly spicy which I like coz I can’t handle too spicy food.

Diner Review №66

This restaurant has been on my list ever since it popped up on yelp. I haven't seen any other Thai BBQ hot pot restaurants in the Bay Area. I came here with my family after watching the Nutcracker ballet. I didn't think about how we'd smell like charcoal and meat in our fancy clothes so next time I come l'd wear sweats!
I think there's only street parking around but luckily for me I was able to find metered parking right in front.
The restaurant is quite clean and bathrooms were clean which is a huge plus.
We ordered 2 of the large BBQ hotpot combos and a papaya salad. It was the perfect amount for the 4 of us! We loved the charcoal grill and the sauces! All 3 were delicious: spicy seafood sauce, muukata sauce, and tamarind sauce. don't eat papaya salad but my mom and sisters really liked it.
The combo also let's you choose a rice or noodle so 3 of us got garlic fried rice and 1 sticky rice. Both are good but we al liked the garlic fried rice more. For proteins we got pork shoulder, pork belly, marinated chicken, scallop, squid, and shrimp. For hotpot the broth was herbal Thai broth and vegetables was an assortment of cabbage, carrots, mushroom and tofu. Overall our meal was delicious, however the meat, seafood, and veggies are just ok quality. What made the food really good was the charcoal grill and sauces.
I also got 1 free Thai tea from check-in and it was a little more creamy than I'm used to which didn't like at first, but it turned out to be a really nice drink after eating the spicy seafood sauce. My mom ordered their hot tea which was a corn tea and she loved it.
Service was excellent and the staff is so attentive! It was our first time dining here and they were really helpful with explaining the menu. Altogether it was about $146 pre-tip which think is pretty good for 4 people in SF.
would give the food 4 stars and 1 extra star for the excellent service.

Diner Review №67

Really cool spot in the city! First time having thai bbq and it was a good change of pace from the usual kbbq. They have a unique charcoal grill/pot combo that let's you do both bbq and hotpot, but it takes some getting used to. The food and service was amazing as well. Definitely check this place out!

We went on a Tuesday night when it wasn't busy. Really enjoyed the food and the staff were friendly. Highly recommended.

Diner Review №70

It was alright, not as good as I imagined :/ I think the flavors of this place didn't match as well compared to normal hot pot flavors they weren't that bold or tasty. Also we got the combined grill + hot pot experience but it was lacking for both, the grill was a bit too small and uneasy to handle the meats, they would just fall into the soup moat a lot. And the soup part didn’t taste like much at all. Overall our group of 7 had a fun night with all the soju shots and the atmosphere but the food was aight

Went on a Saturday night and the place was packed! They asked us if we have reservations which we didn't so we had to wait 20-25 min. The service was on a slower side but I think they were understaffed so it made sense. The restaurant is decent size and had a ton of tables but everything was full. The hostess was very sweet and kind though.

We got the chicken wings and the bbq platter. Both items were good but nothing exceptional, hence the 4 stars. Overall the experience was good.

Good: friendly staff, the garlic fried rice is really good. The setup is cool.
Meh: the bbq itself was just fine.

Diner Review №79

It's a first for me to have BBQ and hot pot at the same time! What an interesting experience. Oh and the fried udon tasted great 👍🏻

Diner Review №80

This is so good... 🤤. I rarely review the good spots because I gatekeep but this place is new and I want them to stay in business foreverrrr. The bbq never burns and the broth is so yummy with all the meat drippings. The large bbq states it's for 2 people and I would say that's pretty accurate, you could get away with 3 but with 4 you'll need to order more food. I got papaya salad and 1 large CYO bbq with pork shoulder, pork belly, marinated chicken, rib-eye (not steak), and scallops with fried rice as the starch choice. It was all so flavorful and the chicken was unbelievably tender and not dry even though I left it on the grill longer than needed. In regards to the pan burning, there is a particular order you must cook the meats to prevent that and I learned this from kbbq. They give you a large piece of lard and that helps the meat from sticking thus prevents burning but don't leave the lard on the pan, it will burn. What I do is grease, place the meat and then place lard aside until I grease again when flipping the meat. An additional technique in keeping the pan clean is dunking the lard in the broth and using it as a scrubber, pushing all the meat bits into the broth for more flavor. Also, the heat is controlled by adding cold broth. For my meat choices this is the cooking order and it never burns: pork belly, chicken, pork shoulder, beef. The scallops should be cooked in the broth towards the end after most of the meat is cooked so it absorbs all of the yummy meaty broth flavors. The papaya salad was so good we ordered a second and the dipping sauces, red and green, are also very delicious. I had such a hard time choosing between the two when dipping my meat that I dipped into both at times. Afterwards, I kept thinking about the meal all day that, in fact, I went again the very next day.

Diner Review №83

I don't understand the excitement. The hot pot lacks any Thai seasoning except for the side sauce. The setup is illogical, with the BBQ sliding down and a tiny soup ring that won't even accommodate a spoon. My dinner was a huge disappointment.

This place was so good I came back during the same weekend! And I bought a mookata grill the following week because I couldn’t stop thinking about going back LOL

First off, this is THAI bbq, not Korean BBQ so the experience will be different. There’s only two sauces (red sauce and green sauce) along with lime, Thai chili, and garlic and that’s it. So for everyone expecting all the sides that kbbq has, this is not for you. In all honestly, I prefer this so much more.

What I highly recommend ordering for two: Papaya Salad ($14), and Set Muu Large ($59). You will be stuffed!! On the occasion me and my girl friend came, we had to take so much left overs home. On the other occasion I took my very active, gym-going bf and we were both highly satisfied with the portions!

The customer service is excellent. When I went when it was not busy, our server even put our meat on the grill for us which was very kind of her. The servers on both nights I went were very courteous and kind.

The grills do burn very quickly if you’re not watching it. I noticed there were patrons who looked like they were not used to this experience and all their grills were burned. If you know how to be a grill master at kbbq then you should be fine.

I have a feeling I will be taking more people here… it’s such a refreshing change from hot pot or kbbq.. I honestly think this is less overwhelming and the customer service is a lot better. Overall worth at least trying once because you’ll definitely be back again.

For kids, I noticed a lot of kids were pretty bored here. Definitely feel like this could be a place for kids but I also realize this restaurant is fairly small and with limited seating. Because you need to tend the grill often, I would find that this is fairly difficult for a family of small kids.

For parking, there is street parking, with tons of meters. The meters expire after 6pm so this is the perfect dinner spot!

I'd give this restaurant a 3.5 star, but I decided to round up. My friend and I went to Muukata for dinner. The place was pretty busy around that time. They had seating area in the front, but they were only using the seating area in the back.

My friend and I got their woonsen larb and muukata set muu small (1 person). Even though the muukata set is listed for 1 person, it definitely was enough for the 2 of us. The muukata mu small comes Chef's choice of assorted veggies and meat. You also have the option to pick between noodles or rice and assorted vegetables. You are expected to grill at your own table, but if you are not sure what to do, you can ask the staff, and they will help you get started.

Our chef's choice of vegetables and meat for our bbq were
1. Shrimp
2. Scallops
3. Napa cabbage
4. Bok choy
5. Carrot
6. Egg tofu
7. Pork belly
8. Chicken marinated muukata sauce
9. Pork liver
10. Sausage
11. King oyster mushroom
12. Kurobuta sausage
13. Fish balls
14. Egg
15. Beef tongue

We got noodles instead of rice. The noodles were really thick.

You also get 2 sauces on the side
1. Muukata sauce
2. Seafood sauce

I personally liked the seafood sauce more than the muukata sauce. It was tangy. Muukata sauce was a bit sweeter even though it was supposed to be spicy.
I wasn't a big fan of the pork liver and shrimp, but everything else was pretty good. Shrimp didn't feel fresh. We also tried their Thai iced tea and hot tea, and they both were pretty good. The hot tea had a nutty flavor. Overall, it was a good first experience.

My friend found this place on TikTok and tbh it was meh. It was definitely something new to try but overall I thought it was not good. There was no way to make a reservation and we came with a group of 6 and they were out of the charcoal grill so we had to use the gas grill.. how can you market it as a Thai charcoal bbq when you run out of charcoal grills? The meat was whatever, and yes I do think it was definitely marinated with some baking soda to make the meat soft… the selections were limited too.. the broth they give you keeps evaporating really fast so you can’t even try the broth at all.. also they won’t change your grill if it’s burnt.. you have to keep using the same one and it was way too much work for what it is so I was so unmotivated to keep eating it. Maybe that’s why there’s only one restaurant that offer this in the bay.. all I can say is I tried it but won’t be coming back.

This ornate, new restaurant serves delicious food and has great service.

I recommend coming here for dinner, but they're also open at lunchtime. I had the Yang Hai. It was flavorful rice with vegetables and perfectly cooked pork. It was ready in less than 10 minutes and came with a little container of spicy sauce. I highly recommend getting the Yang Hai, even if you don't like spicy food. You can just not put the sauce on; the food is already great without it. The total was $17.37 before tip, which I think is a reasonable price.

There is plenty of seating, including benches in the back for groups, smaller tables, and round booths in the front. The restaurant is also beautifully decorated.

The first Thai BBQ spot in the United States. The food, service and ambiance teleported me to Thailand. This awesome spot was able to replicate the Muu Kata experience in Thailand. The direct translation of Muu Kata is Pork Grill. We pretty much ordered the whole menu from the Muu kata set to the Jum jim set. The food was absolutely incredible. Even the appetizers with the wings, intestine and Som Tum was amazing.

The charcoal fire is what really sold me as that enhanced the flavors.

There is a wait so make sure you get there early. The food came out fast and prompt and the service was super friendly and nice

The ambiance was perfect to come hangout with friends and definitely an aesthetic that brought you to Thailand.

We came here at a recommendation of a friend on a Saturday evening. There was a short wait as the inside is small but we were seated fairly quickly. We ordered the Muukata large set. The choices of meat were good cuts and the flavor was excellent. Service was also top notch as they came by and constantly checked on how we were doing. Overall, I highly recommend checking out MuuKata!

It was a typical SF summer evening-- fog whipped by howling winds--when I walked into this restaurant looking for a hot noodle dish and some spring rolls. I was immediately greeted by the welcoming staff who ushered me to my seat. After a brief introduction to the menu, I was drinking a cold Singha lager and anxiously awaiting the appetizer. I was not disappointed. The rolls were crisp and came with a delicious sauce. Next was the Udon Pad See U. Hearty udon noodles, stir fried with pork, garlic, egg and bok choy. It really hit the spot. The price point was right too. A beer, appetizer, and healthy portion of noodles was about $34. This place is perfect to come solo, with a group of friends, or your family. Will definitely return to try some other dishes.

Thai BBQ is my favorite type of BBQ! I love how the meat juices cooking drip down to the soup where you can cook veggies and other items. The broth is super flavorful at the end. Definitely a recommend if you haven't tried this setup before.

Service was great. The grill pan in the middle gets burned easily and there is no way to replace it during the middle of cooking. This is aluminum pan which should be replaced with brass instead. The downside - meat quality is not not good. Meat it’s either marinated with the baking soda to make it soft or it’s tough to eat. It’s over priced for this type of meat quality. Good idea and presentation of providing different BBQ style but the meat quality needs to be improved! Scallop taste like squid. I wish the owner can change the meat and seafood supplier to have more decent quality meat to provide.
Again, service is good. Thai chicken fried rice and papaya salad are good too.

Super friendly & great service place.

Food is great for the price. Not the highest quality, but you can tell they take pride in their food. Service is friendly and attentive. Wish they had a full liquor license.

Good service. Overpriced. Undifferentiated.

Service was great. Dipping sauce was nice. Unfortunately the price is a little steep for something that is not greatly differentiated from the other AYCE BBQs (Korean and Chinese).

We were recommended the grilled pork intestines which was one of two most expensive items on the starters menu. Turned out to be a really underwhelming dish. The intestine was well marinated but it was cold and appeared to have been left out for a while. For the price of almost an entree, I would skip this.

For the BBQ we ordered two create your own (CYO) large sets. The meat quality was acceptable for BBQ but quantity was left to be desired for the price we paid. We finished the plate of meat and feeling hungry. So we downed the garlic fried rice to fill ourselves up.

The pot and ladle were just awkward. The broth falls round the rim of the BBQ plate and the ladle is just not made to scoop up the broth. As it uses charcoal, the plate burns quickly too. Our clothes smelled of burned meat when we got home.

Again, service was great. Unfortunately this place hasn’t differentiated itself from other BBQ locations. Some gaps can be addressed but others are harder to fix. Not for me.

My journey of dining at restaurants that are open late continues! This place recently popped up in my search for a restaurant that is open late, and I am glad that I tried it. There are not a ton of restaurants that are open late in the area so lucky that we found this one.

Walking into this place, it feels really modern but also has a nice homey feeling. The staff is super welcoming and very nice. This was most of our first time trying Thai BBQ so we didn't really know what to expect. The server (possible owner?) was very helpful and explained everything to us.

We ended up ordering a large Muu set, papaya salad with corn + salted egg, larb, tom yum fried rice and the grilled marinated pork intestines. There were five of us, so I think if we were really hungry we would probably add a second small Muu set. I would have to say that my favorites were probably the papaya and the tom yum fried rice with shrimp. You do also get to pick your spice level.

The grill is small so it does take time to cook things but that's the fun of it! There's also broth around the side which means you do get to boil things. We asked if we were cooking things correctly and we got an answer of there really is no wrong way of cooking! A few times meat items slid into the broth, but it was not a big deal.

Overall a really fun experience and an honestly great place to hang out. We were told to take our time and enjoy. Will definitely make a trip back here!

We had a great dinner here! I really liked the chicken wings. Our party of 4 shared the Muu large set for 2 people and plus apps, we were definitely full. The charcoal bbq is a really fun balance of grilled meat and soup. I can’t wait to go back and try some of their other main dishes

Unique and delicious Thai BBQ with delicious dipping sauces. Make sure to try the Yum Woonsen too.

I ordered for take out. The food were so tasty and the staffs were nice. Will definitely go back to try other dishes!

Very traditional thai style bbq! The price is very decent. $59 set is great for sharing between 2 people. Will recommend!

Authentic, fun, and delicious!

Fun experience, glad to find this Thai dining style in the States! Pork belly, rib-eye, and shrimp were great. Waiters were very attentive as well. We did the option 2 (~$60) which was plenty for 4 people, with the papaya salad as well. Only complaint was it was a bit chilly in the restaurant, when the grill wasn’t going.

Authentic Thai BBQ restaurant. If you want to experience what an authentic Thai BBQ is, this is the place to go. Recommend you getting a set versus ordering individual plate so you can try all the different meats. Also the sauce here taste just like the one in Thailand
