Low-key strip-mall destination featuring traditional Thai dishes in a snug, simple dining room.
This restaurant has great reviews on Yelp and Google, and it’s clearly popular—my husband said it was packed when he picked up our order. We tried the Tom Yum Soup, Coconut Curry Chicken, and Green Papaya Salad. All three were good, but the standout was the Nyonya Coconut Curry Chicken—slightly sweet, mildly spicy, and perfect over rice. The Tom Yum Soup had large shrimp and a rich, flavorful broth (a bit too rich for me). The Green Papaya Salad was fresh with a nice mix of ingredients, though it could use a bit more fish sauce.
This is one of the best Thai food spots in San Diego. It’s a small, family-owned restaurant with excellent food and great service. The dishes are fresh and not greasy like some other places. Every time I’m in San Diego and craving Thai food, this is my go-to spot. All their food is great, but I especially love the drunken noodles and basil eggplant. Their curries are also amazing. They also have lunch specials for 13.95, which are a great deal. Just a heads-up, the spice level is no joke. On their scale from 1 to 10, I usually stick to a 3, and it’s still plenty spicy. Highly recommend!
We stopped by this restaurant just by chance. The food was really good. Authentic Thai food. We got the fried chicken padthai, shrimp fried rice, and beef salad. The food was really good. The spicy level is Asian spicy, so beware. Great customer service. We also got some Thai tea and iced coffee to go. Both were amazing. We would come back if visiting the area.
Experience the authentic taste of Thailand at this remarkable establishment, complemented by a warm and welcoming staffs. Enjoy a diverse selection of dishes and indulge in the rich flavors of coconut milk, particularly in the complimentary evening dessert (Tapioca w/ coconut milk), available on weekends. It is a truly satisfying culinary experience.
Chaba Thai is a San Diego gem. The food is really good and equally matched is its service.
My sister and I were initially going to order two tom yum soups and the waiter recommended we go with one instead since the portions are quite big. Not only was the soup delicious but I also found this to be such a sweet gesture since other restaurants would take any opportunity to get more money out of a customer. He also gave us desserts at the end.
The kindness we were shown was a bright spot in what had been a hard week for both of us and I felt really grateful.
Tom Kha soup was amazing and the portion size was incredibly generous! The waiter was really nice and guided us in selecting the appropriate portion for my sister and I. Not sure if he had overheard our conversation about our hard week, but he surprised us with a free dessert soup at the end! We'll be back!
Delicious Thai food!! We love coming here for Thai because we are supporting real people who are so kind and sweet to everyone that comes in the door. The food is great, especially if you enjoy spicy Thai. One of our favorite things is to see the staff all eating together, meaning the food is so authentic it's what they are eating themselves! Also they always throw in a tapioca pearl and melon desert in milk. They are very familiar with vegan and vegetarian needs and always ask if you have preferences.

Amazing customer service, they were very kind and attentive. The food was delicious and spicy.
Panang Curry was really tasty and they were also really nice.
I honestly don’t understand why the review is so good. It’s very average for me

Nice spot. Their Khao soi is really good!
Sooo good!! ❤️

Service is so nice, and the food is great! I like medium spicy and level 3 was almost too much for me, so definitely choose lower than you think your spice level is!
Excellent food, amazing service

Food is great! Very spicy. If you dont like that ask 1 level. If you like some spice ask 2. And if you like super spice, you decide😉 overall nice place! I was there 3 times and will come again.
The food and customer service is always next level and the complimentary tapioca at the end is delicious! A refreshing way to end the meal. Thank you so much and my family will be back again!!!
Food was extremely good
This place is one of my absolute favorites for Thai! It truly tastes great! The people are always nice whether you eat in or order to go!

Nothing about this place made me want to come back again. I ordered the shrimp Pad See Ew with a spice level 3. I normally would give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt with their food but there were a couple of things that didn't sit right with me. The shrimp was way too hard and chewy. It took forever to finish chewing one piece of shrimp. The noodles themselves were not flavorful or seared like how Pad See Ew should be. The egg rolls that come with the lunch special did not taste fresh. Normally there is something that would draw me back to try another dish or their food again but the food was average at best. Not great, maybe good but average would be tops and that's a stretch. For how many good reviews this place has received, it doesn't live up to its hype.
1st time being here. Great service and food was Fantastic. Hidden spot. Ordered Beef Pad Thai, chicken wings and shrimp fried rice. Will definitely come back again once we visit the city next time.
The food was excellent... thank you
Best thai food in town. Basil eggplant is delicious 😋
This was hands down the best Thai food I have had in a very long time. I ordered the Pad garlic pepper chicken spice level 5/10 it was almost too spicy but I couldn't stop earing it. They brought out a complementary dessert of this super tasty with coconut milk, tapioca beads, cantaloupe balls with ice cubes in it, best place ever. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
One of the best Thai take-out places around. Fresh, hot, generous plates. Clean genuine flavor. Friendly staff. Some tables inside for dine-in too, but Thai carries well.
Yummy!!

Yummy and soothing food! Tried curry fried rice, green curry and spicy basil. Everything is top notch and free dessert is yummy again! Owner and chef service is good!! Medium spicy is good for try!

The food was excellent! I had the pad see ew. It was flavorful and well prepared. Service was very attentive and even offered me a free dessert at the end. Nice quaint place with great lunch deals. Would highly recommend.
Food is incredible. Nam Tok and Larb. Staff were very kind and helpful . Would go back again!!
Delicious 😋. Second time here. I ordered Drunken Noodles with shrimp. Zero spice. It was really good but I prefer the dish with Pork, tastier. My friend loves Shrimp Pad Thai. First visit, an Xtra spicy #5 dish was ordered- way too hot 🔥. This visit toned down to medium heat #3- more enjoyable! A variety of different dishes, protein & pasta & sauces.
I've been coming here for awesome Thai food for years. Reasonable lunch specials & delicious food. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Incredibly yummy Thai food with such nice service! We’ve been to a lot of Thai spots in San Diego but this one definitely takes the #1 spot. We also got delicious dessert at the end of our meal. Worth every dollar!
Great place, great service and super friendly staff
Food is outstanding. Service is attentive. Desserts are wonderful. Atmospjere is basic with clean RR.
👍
Great food and very friendly service. Much appreciated💕🌺💕🌺❤️😋
Everything was good but I was especially impressed with the chicken! Dinner came with soup and a little dessert which was a nice surprise.
Yum!! They can make the curries vegetarian!! The staff are very kind and the food is so good.
Polite staff, great food
Got the pad se ew. Was my first time eating there. Also got a Thai tea but there was a hair in the drink which I didn’t finish. They asked if I wanted to take the drink to go but wasn’t about to drink it after discovering the hair. The Thai tea is much more sweet and sugary than other restaurants, doesn’t have the milkness but still worth the taste. Also got the coconut ice cream which was a great order. Overall great place to go, just a hiccup on the hair but recommend going!
Small place with little sitting, inefficiently placed. After waiting for a while they sit other people behind me because they were two and I was by myself. Decided to walk a way. Poor service.
You an tell they have regulars who come and that is a lovely sign of a great place.
Wonderful food! I appreciated the quick service. I was there for the lunch special and ordered the red curry spice level 3… it felt like a 5.
A perfect spot to have a quick lunch or dinner.
Very good flavor. I had the fish cakes, nice golden brown and come with a fish sauce. I had the Khao Soi which is noodles in curry. I chose the chicken option. The noodles are crispy and twisty, which I liked because I wanted to try something different. The curry flavor was right on. Can't wait to come back and try some more dishes.
Great place for a quick lunch order. Lunch specials are great value. Quick turnaround too. Note: The restaurant is basic, wouldn’t go here for a date night.
We were visiting my son at UCSD from the Bay Area and was in the mood for some Thai's food. We found Chaba Thai and the food was delicious. Every single dish was spot on. Each dish has a different flavor. Must be one of the best Thai's food I had in a long time. The beef salad and the papaya salad were full of flavor and refreshing. The pad Thai and the fish cakes with the yummy sauce. The service was very friendly and they even gave us some tapioca dessert on the house. Highly recommended and we will be back!
I haven't been here in years. There are so many places that have gone down in quality after the pandemic. I was pleasantly surprised to find the food here has gotten better! I got the pad see ew and it was the best ever! My boyfriend really enjoyed his Drunken Noodles. The tapioca dessert they gave us at the end was really great as well. We'll definitely be coming back.
The best Tom yam soup, and the papaya salad, and Pad see ew. But the crab rice was mediocre. The service was good :) free desserts and all. Good 4 star casual Thai food restaurant.
Had the worst pad Thai in US. I saw the comment best pad Thai, so I tried it. The meat was not fresh and the sauce is 90% plain sweet not much flavor even though they put lots of sauce. Very disappointed:(
My dad and I tried Chaba Thai Kitchen for the first time today. The fresh spring rolls with tofu was delicious. The dipping sauce was a mildly spicy peanut sauce-different than the thick peanut sauce at most places. I would buy a bottle of it if I could! We shared the mixed seafood Pad Thai. It was among the best I've had. The portions are large. We shared and still needed a to-go container.
The tapioca dessert was so good!
We will definitely go back.
Just tried this place and it is now my favorite Thai restaurant. Khao Kar Moo here is super delicious and the service is amazing! They are so friendly, and I appreciate them letting me practice my Thai with them! Definitely recommend!!!
It's outstanding ! From staff to chef.
There is nuance in my rating that needs to be understood. I ordered Yellow Curry and chicken. All the ingredients were 4-5 stars and the curry was rather good, perhaps a 4 but together, for me they were a 3. How? The potatoes and carrots all tasted and felt fresh but they did not taste like they were cooked in the curry. From my meal my opinion is that the chicken and veggies were all cooked separate so that they could put together easily a different type of curry having a set of pre-made ingredients. Whether this is true or not, I don't know but for me while all the ingredients were of good quality none of them tasted like it was cooked in the curry to absorb some of the flavor.
None of the food was bad -- it was of great quality.
I would try this again and redo my review if I'm wrong or had a unlucky day. I would really love to be wrong... As I love curry and I hunt for curry restaurants.
Perhaps try something else.
This place is absolutely wonderful! The first thing that stuck out to me was just how kind the staff was; I got my order to go and the lady who was running the front of the restaurant offered me a nice comfortable place to sit in the meantime, offered me water, and just wanted to make sure that I was happy and comfortable while I was waiting. The service truly left an impression on me. The food itself was phenomenal, with ample shrimp and spices. This is one of my best experiences with Thai food, and the quality is incredible whether you dine in or out. Overall, I cannot recommend enough.
The service was very decent. The lady helping was very nice but the man that was there was a bit not so nice. When he brought the soup of the day he literally dropped the soup on the table it spilled and he didn’t say a thing, just walked off. I had to us the only two napkins they gave me to clean it up. The soup of the day lacked in flavor as well as the vegetables melody. I get the vegetables dish at other Thai places and this place wasn’t that good. My husband really did enjoy his green curry. It said he loved the flavor.the beef jerky was the best I ever had. It was the best part of the meal.
Amazing
Excellent, authentic Thai food and friendly service. Update: I have since left San Diego area but wanted to write a more enthusiastic and detailed review:This is my favorite Thai restaurant in the San Diego area - I have tried a lot, and I also lived in Thailand - so I do feel that I have the credentials to know what good Thai food is. I originally found this place by looking in San Diego eater (which I will add their Thai restaurant suggestions were very on point). My favorite is the crispy pork belly with Thai Broccoli (which isn't on the menu of most Thai places or isn't done well), but you can't go wrong with most of their dishes. The staff is very nice (esp the weekend staff). I do not have any new photos to provide as I have been here so many times, but also recently left the San Diego area - but I will miss this restaurant and highly recommend it!
I really enjoyed the khao soi spice level 2, I think next time I can get level 3. The pad see ew was decent too. They also give you dessert.
Delicious and authentic Thai food.
Yellow curry was so creamy and flavorful.
This place used to be so good a year ago, now it’s just okay. The customer service is not the best, they don’t acknowledge the customer and when you say thank you they don’t even respond. Today I got the drunken noodle with beef (spicy 3/10). The spice was more of an 8 and they only put 4 small slices of bell peppers. This dish was mostly noodles… I will be looking for a better place to eat Thai food.
Really good khao soi. The owner and staff were very friendly.
It doesn't look much, but this family-run strip mall Thai restaurant has some of the best Thai curry I've had. The service is very friendly and you can customize your spice level. I went with 10 and extra chilli oil and could taste it. The mango chicken curry was delicious with enough heat and balance of cream and sweetness with deliciously soft mango pieces and chicken. Free dessert with tapioca and coconut was amazing as well. Prices are reasonable for San Diego. Highly recommend!
Best pad Thai in all of San Diego.
Food is humble and comforting. You have to come in and try something in here. Great portions, kind people, relaxed atmosphere.
Eat here if you’re in the area
Really good curry for decent prices. I would visit again
One of my favorite Thai spots in San Diego.
Price is right too!
Not recommend because of the food taste, service and also the sickness I got the next day.
Customer service is really bad.
Probably the worst pad Thai I’ve ever had. It was dry and lacked flavor. I will never go there again.
Exactly what I’d hoped for when reading other reviews. I put Cholula hot sauce on about every slice of pizza I eat, and a 5/10 “American” (they volunteered the term) spicy was enjoyable. (Had to ask whether their 0-10 is “Thai spicy” or not).
Will 100% be coming back.
Not a good place to get pick up, they make you wait at least 20 minutes each time
Very good food. I tried yellow curry, which was delicious. We got complimentary coconut milk shot too.
Tom yum soup was too SALTY and decided to throw it away.
I've been to many Thai restaurants in SD, LA, and Thailand. I can tell that you should not judge the book by its cover. The decor of this place is quite simple and minimal, but the food is the opposite--they have extensive exotic, yet with quite authentic dishes with Thai taste. I tried this place multiple times and always wanted to come back after each visit. The servers may not speak perfect tongue, but their services speak for itself! Highly recommended!
Great tasting food, reasonable prices, friendly service, and their yummy free dessert will keep me coming back!
Amazing Thai food here. Got their pad Thai and it was AMAZING! Right amount of spice and the quality of the food was rich. Owner was really nice too and gave us desert on the house woohoo
Unfortunately this was my go to thai restaurant. My wife and I ordered tea and were brought out something that looked like sugar. It made the tea taste like salty broth. I'm almost certain it was MSG powder. Definitely not salt. Then the red mango curry tasted exactly like that powder. I've had this dish many times here before. Then there free tapioca tasted of rich saltiness as well. Like what happened folks? I've been coming here for like 6 years. Disappointed. I always tip even when I get mediocre service. This is the first time I've ever not left a tip. So that's saying a lot. I know some people like msg but tell the new cook it doesn't belong in everything.
On a side note the tom kha was the same and good as usual.
The food here is absolutely delicious and the service is amazing. I will never stop coming here. Highly recommend the tom kha soup sooo good :)
The food was quite delicious, I had the crispy chicken and basil. My friend had the red curry. We will both be back.
Very delicious especially spicy basil chicken with preserved eggs must try.
From bad to worse
Only 3 bites of meat disgusted
And dissatisfied, horrible portions
Still hungry, I ve been robbed
Very good Thai food and very kind and friendly servers. We love all the noodle dishes, the fresh spring rolls and any of the stir-fry vegetable dishes. The Pad Thai is the best I’ve had but could use more fresh bean sprouts and crushed peanuts. The tapioca dessert is one of the reasons I keep going back - the perfect cooling ending after spicy meal! Love that they offer good brown rice as well. My only complaint is the green curry sauce is thicker/creamier than I’ve ever seen and seems to have frozen mixed peas and carrots in it vs. the good variety of fresh vegetables they have in every other dish.
Horrible. Order from Uber eats. They cancelled after 35 minutes. Could’ve ordered from somewhere else. Why did it take 35 min to cancel my order??
Authentic Thai food, great service, dessert was on the house!
This place should have 5 starts. My husband and I got the cashew beef, tom yum soup, and shrimp fried rice everything was so delicious and the waitress was really sweet and nice. She recommended what the right amount of spicy would be for us based on a scale and she got it right on point. At the end of our dinner she offered us this dessert on the house, it was coconut milk with melon and tapioca, so good!!! This became my favorite place for thai food and won’t be going anywhere else.
This was definitely the most pleasant dining experience Ive had in all of San Diego. It was a very chill vibe and the food totally blew me away as well, curry is delicious. (I recommend the thai iced coffee) Waiter was very kind and even brought us out complementary deserts. Not to mention prices are pretty good here for the quality and the portion. 100% recommend
Such a hidden gem! Highly recommend the Khao Soi. So yummy and the portion is good too.
I ordered spicy noodles, they were very good, likes the taste!
Ordered from Chaba's website and said it would be ready in 15-25 minutes. I got there in FORTY FIVE MINUTES and order STILL wasn't ready. Apparently, Matt didn't see my order go through their own website. OK, so I waited ANOTHER 10-15 minutes. After I wanted to cancel it, then I finally received the order.
It shouldn't be this hard just to get some thai food. I agree with others here, there are other options out there.
Gone are the days when I used to love Chaba for their service and food.
Great yellow curry!
One of the better Thai food places in San Diego. Good for take outs as it is a really small hole-in-the-wall place in a strip mall. Gets A for most of the standard Thai dishes but highly recommend Khao Soi Noodles as entree' and Tapioca Coconut Milk as dessert.
Very delicious food and excellent customer service.
FANTASTIC!
We recently learned of Chaba ("Hibiscus") Thai Kitchen at another Thai/Lao place we found. We tried it out for lunch today, and we'll be back!
I had the Khao Soi Gai (curry broth and noodles with chicken, topped with crunchy noodles). This is my favoriate northern Thai dish... and one of my favorite foods in the world! It was excellent, and a massive, generous portion in a huge bowl like you'd get in Chiang Mai! And it tasted exactly like khao soi in Thailand.
My wife had the Pad See-ew noodle stir fried flat noodle dish with beef. We shared the tod mun pla (little fish cakes) appetizer.
Topped it all off with Thai iced tea and a complementary coconut milk, melon and gelatin dessert. Yum.
FYI I ordered "medium" spice level and it was fairly spicy. Not too hot for me (I like things REALLY hot), but it had some kick. If you're a lightweight in that regard, order "mild." They served red chili paste on the side of my khao soi to add more kick to taste, along with sliced purple onions and green chilis.
Friendly, fast and efficient service.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
The best Yellow Curry I've had in awhile. Tapioca with coconut milk was also really good. I'll be back for sure!
I like the Tom Kah Soup, great blend of sweet sour and spicy. But the padthai I had is average, a bit too sweet and sticky.
Despite the positive reviews, my friend and I experienced extremely slow service over a 40 minute wait for our order. We were told they were busy, not for in-house service but for call-in orders. I would think being there in person would be priority for the kitchen, unfortunately that was not so. We shared the fresh spring roll which was adequate. She asked for the Thai salad which she saw online yet was not on the printed menu, the chef was accommodating and did create a special order for her. I had the eggplant stirfry with vegetables and it was quite tasty. Overall food okay and service pleasant yet super slow to get our food.
Great place to eat. Vegan options!
I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai Lunch Special and the Papaya Salad (Thai). The food is pretty average, not the best Thai food I’ve had. However, if you’re looking for something cheap, it’s worth trying (around $10 for the lunch specials).
Best Thai food in all of San Diego! Make sure to try the pad Thai 😋
The Panang was great, will definitely go back!
Authentic northern Thai food. They even have Khao Soi which is very hard to find outside of northern Thailand. The only other Thai restaurant I've found that had it was Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas. The portions and prices at Chaba are fair. The waitress Nari is very helpful and always cheerful. It is always a pleasure to dine at this small restaurant. My wife is Thai and very picky about authentic Thai food. Every entree we've tried has passed her authenticity test, except for the drunken noodles. Update: Prices have increased and the amount of meat and seafood in entrees has decreased. Quality is still excellent, but no longer a good value. Reducing to just 3 stars.
Enjoyed Khao Soi very much! Tom yum is slightly too sweet for me , but still very good. Good portions and prices. The service is nice as well.
After food they give complimentary desert which is delicious! 👌🏼
They serve food only in disposable plates and bowls but it doesn't make the experience any less great
Came here for the lunch specials. Food and service is great. Good pad Thai and the curry is the best. Chicken satay was moist and perfect!
Seafood pad Thai was amazing
Unexpected dine in, we were going to eat @ Crabtown next door but closed. The very good food and excellent service was more than what was expected for a casual small eatery. Highly recommended for Thai cuisine.
Delicious! Portion sizes are large for a fair price and the quality and flavor is great. Highly recommend!
Nice service
Very fast. Had a delivery from them with 13 items! They had it out to me in less than 10 minutes and they let me wait inside because it was raining. Very nice nice people.
This place is tucked into a little stop mall and if easily dismissed. Don't! The food was reasonably priced and delicious.
Delicious and there's a good variety of dishes
best Thai in San Diego. The khao soi is incredible
Excellent flavor, variety, portions and service!
I don't know what it is,but for desert they give you some kind of mellon ball and rice drink with thousands of mini boba. That what mother's milk should taste like
They had the food ready on time. The food is great and yummy. We had egg rolls, pad thai, panang curry, pineapple fried rice, and Tom yum soup.
Delicious food at and even more delicious price! The lunch special was amazing. Great spice and good customer service. Highly recommend
I've been going here for years and am never disappointed. Great food!
Good service and they were open to communicate about our feedback. Our feedback was that the tom yum soup was more of a thick fish stew then the tom yum we were used to which has a more clear and fragrant herbal broth. The fish odor and taste was overwhelming and we ultimately had to throw it out. Papaya salad was good but nothing special. Pad thai was very disappointing as it seemed to have been overcooked and the noodles had a unusual plastic aftertaste.
Great service from the man at the register.. dank food and a lil surprise included
Whatever you do, DO NOT pre-order your food from their website. I ordered my food at 10:46am they open at 11:00am and I put to pick up at 11:15am. I get here at 11:16am and am told she doesn't know where my order is. I told her I ordered off your website. Then she proceeded to tell me they don't do lunch specials on the weekends. Okay, then why is it an option on your website? Then she says, "I am only here once week so I don't know what's going on." I have a 30 minute lunch and now have to wait 15 minutes for food I had pre ordered on their own website. The food is great....no complaints on that.... but wow..... just wow.
Great Thai food at a reasonable price. Super friendly restaurant staff with helpful suggestion if your not sure of the item on the menu. ขอบคุณมาก
The curry puff chicken and tom kah soup was delicious! Think I found my new favorite spot. Thank you!
Delicious food! Got the fried broccoli, spicy basil, and vegetable Thai fried rice! I’m in heaven!
Thus far the best Thai Food around Clairemount and Kearny Mesa. One of few places that you can order through their website for pickup or delivery. Food was amazing (try the crispy basil chicken). Great service. They call me right away when one of the items ordered was unavailable. Great communication.
The gentleman that helped is was rude and he didn't provide any napkins or asked we wanted any sauces. They made a mistake on my order but I was at home already so couldn't take it back. First time there but it WILL be my last time there.
Wonderful service! Everyone is so kind! Food is sssoooo yummy! Definitely recommend this place!
A very popular small Thai restaurant that has good dishes and very reasonable prices. It’s our go-to place for Thai food.
I ordered online and showed up at the time directed and had to wait for another 30 minutes. I recommend you do NOT order from here because I certainly never will again.
Love this place! Thank you for staying open during COVID!
Horrible and unfriendly services. The woman was sitting there eating was staring at me and keeping talking about me in Thai. The young man there did not want to give me any condiments, utensils or napkins. When I asked for those items because I was eating it in the car because of social distancing order, he gave me only 2 chopsticks, 1 jalapenos vinegar pepper sauce for my 2 shrimp pad thai and 1 chicken pad see ew order. Why run a business if you gonna be frugal like that. My pad thai tasted inauthentic and soggy. I will not be going back!
Great service, food was amazing. This place is like a gem tucked away under a rock.
good food.
I wish I took a photo of foods here but I could not resist but finished them all before I realized. Highly recommended place for authentic home-cook Thais flavor lovers. You may find many Thais dishes that are very complicated to get it right (and they get it right~). The servers are very friendly. My favorite dish is ข้าวหมกไก่ (yellow rice with chicken). The sauce is very good!
Curry
Very good. Reasonable prices. Casual restaurant. Nice staff.
Sooo good! I had the green curry and it was delicious! The tapioca was amazing! Great customer service as well! Lady was so nice and accommodating. Will definitely be back :)
