My very first time here, at a glance the place does not look like a traditional Thai restaurant and doesn’t give you the homey Thai atmosphere vibe but none of that matters!!!! The food is amazing I myself ordered the pad see eww with level 6 spicy. As an appetizer I had the chicken satay, that was delicious. Overall I am delighted to say this has become a new Thai favorite on my list!! Sticky rice is a must have and let me tell y’all it’s a 10/10!!!!!
Came here for dinner around 18:45 on a Thursday with my family. It was not busy at all so we were seated right away. We were provided water right away and given time to look at the menu. I wanted to order the Crab Meat Fried Rice, but they did not have everything to make it, so I went with the Panang Curry with spice level 2. My wife got the Panang Curry level 4 and my mom got the Chicken BBQ Fried Rice. Everything was really delicious and flavorful. The place had lot of decorations and looked clean all around. The staff was quick and friendly. We would definitely come back for more, especially the proximity to our home.
The food was great and all the sauces they had to. I went here with my baby’s brother and mom the people serving us were really nice to my family the food was well seasoned and is definitely worth the money for such a large portion of food there’s not a lot of what you ask for but it’s with it. Definitely recommend
I ordered eggrolls and chicken pad Thai.
Taking off 1 star because the quality of the food did not match the pricing. Too pricey for a Thai food in my opinion. YMMV.
Taking off another 1 star because the noodle texture of Pad Thai was subpar compared to the competing restaurant nearby.
Food took about 15min, so order before you get to the store.
Egg rolls
- crunchy
- good texture overall
Chicken Pad Thai
- was not expecting this flavor from the pad Thai dish. I was expecting more “Thai” flavor.
- seemed like there were about 80% noodles, 15% veggies, and 5% chicken.
- not too flavorful.. so make sure to grab chili sauce or soy sauce to your taste
I’m disappointed that Tom Yum soup does not have “bowl” size anymore, only Hot-Pot size so it’s pricier.
This place is awesome. We were the last one that night to visit this restaurant. The owner was so courteous to welcome us and served the most delicious thai food. He was very welcoming and patiently waited for us to finish our meal. Should give it a try if craving for thai food. You won't be disappointed.

We were in the area and decided that this would be our destination for lunch. Place is clean, service was good food amazing and hot. I would recommend this location.
I got green curry and pineapple fried rice! You are able to change your spice level on both dishes and is enough for several servings. Also u can request to have no cashews in the pineapple fried rice :) the green curry does not come with white rice. U must order it.
They packaged everything To go with forks and napkins.

Food was excellent, service was attentive, the kra prao pork belly is not to be missed!
A quiet gem of a place. Clean and inviting environment with excellent service. Food came out quickly and was delicious. Definitely check it out.

Good spicy Papaya Salad.
Customer service was amazing and the food was out of this world ! This place deserves a higher rating . It was my first time eating here but surely not my last .
Drunken noodles. really! some one just named it. recommending the 🧑🍳 to try from Zen😁
I had the Yellow Curry with chicken, which was very good. They served a soup before the food came which was delicious. To drink I had a mango iced tea which was a little bland. Good service.
I had the Thom kah Gai and it was delicious, so lemony… very pleased.
Don’t use their website to order. I placed an ”ASAP pickup” order at 11:15AM, and once it processed it says “pick up at 4PM”. I called in immediately to try to fix the issue, but was met with push back that I ordered incorrectly and they didn’t have my order. I triple checked and made sure I ordered off their authorized website. The woman couldn’t help me over the phone and told me I could come in at 4PM for my order or “cancel”. I told her there was no option for me to cancel…. So I went inside (work is right next door) to try get a refund & prevent them from wasting food at 4PM, and that was another awkward conversation. I understand the worker is limited on what she can do, but I showed her my emailed receipt for proof. Maybe I don’t understand food service, but I figured they could make my order now & not at 4PM… simple? After going back & forth for 15 mins with calls to the owner, they made my order but I won’t ever be back. I paid them $20 for fried rice and to be made feel I was trying to scam them or something was truly demeaning. I can relate that technology is frustrating but it’s not your client’s fault your online service is glitching. After all that I have no appetite for their food.

Very good curry. Got the yellow curry, got the spiciness level 5 and it was perfect. Hot enough to notice, but didn't detract from the flavor.
I really enjoyed our food and the atmosphere. We both ordered pad thai and both dishes were absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. We will definitely be coming back here again when we are in San diego. Thank you.
I had the best chicken satay I’ve ever had here! The peanut sauce is to die for and I’ve never had chicken be so tender! The ice cream is made at the restaurant and is extremely delicious. I’ll definitely be back
The food is good and is served pretty quickly after ordering.
The staff is incredibly attentive, checked on the table multiple times, and brought water bowls out for the dogs.

Omg! Do NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. They stole $20 from me. I ordered Pad Thai w/ chicken and the order stated it would be ready 10-15min after they opened. When I took the first bite it was bland! You could pick up the noodles like it was a sheet cake. It was gummy and stuck together. I also asked for chili sauce Siracha and the lady acted like they didn’t have any. Then when I asked for my money back due to the horrible meal, they had the NERVE to argue with me. Keep the little funky $20 and by some customer service classes. How do they issue business licenses to places like this?! Crazy?! The owner states I didn’t want to bring the food back. That’s a lie. I couldn’t even get a word in becuase they were so busy arguing with me instead of trying to make it right. Try their food if you want to. You’ve been warned.
Staff is amazing!! Kim made amazing suggestions! Green mussels for appetizer. Amazing dipping sauce!!green papaya salad with a flavorful dressing and Pad Thai was awesome. Great secret is the authentic dishes you can request off menu. It is a food adventure to Thailand!!
Me and my fimally dined in and we loved it. Our server was so kind and welcoming. the food came by really gast and tasted absolutely amazing! I got the drunken noodles with a spice level of 7, it was honestly perfect.
Most of these bad reviews are garbage, probably competitors. This food is AMAZING. I love Thai food, but authentic Thai, not watered down American Thai. California Thai Cafe is amazing. All of our five dishes bursting with flavor, the freshness and taste apparent in every bite. 5 orders with 20% tip $117. Worth ever penny!
This is a great place to go for lunch. Every dish I've eaten here is superb. If you work in the area or are at one of the auto shops nearby or live on base, this is one of the best places you can get a bite at.
My adult daughter and I went here for the first time. It was dinner on Easter Sunday. We were hoping for good Thai food. We walked in and saw only one table (with 3 people) filled in the whole place. At the time we thought we were lucky. Afterwards we realized why this place was almost empty. The seating hostess was a young lady who followed us to the table of our choice and was nice enough, if it hadn't been for her extremely strong body odor and day-old sunscreen smell. And I do mean *smell.* We ordered our food and she brought us tea as we requested. I ordered Yellow Curry (spice level 1) and my adult daughter ordered Pad Se Ew (spice level 10). We know Thai food. We've eaten tons of it over the years and we know how it's supposed to taste. Of course, there are slight variations between restaurants, but primarily when you order a staple Thai dish, you know what to expect. We also ordered (veggie) egg rolls. They were, predictably, over-fried. They were also tasteless. If not for the dipping sauce, there would have been no flavor. Our food came in huge portions. That should have been a clue right there. In my life (I'm in my 60's) I've discovered that restaurants that serve huge portions are trying to make up for their poor cooking. My yellow curry came with a bowl of rice that would have served 5 people. The bowl with the yellow curry was huge and filled almost to the top. I added some rice and began to eat. I immediately started to cough and choke - it wasn't spice level 1, it in was more like level 5! I soldiered on. I bit into the huge chunk of potato and it tasted off. I've never had a potato ever taste like that. In any cuisine. The carrots in it were ok, the onions were too hard still. I ate about half and stopped. I'm hoping that potato doesn't do a number on me later. 🤞 My daughter had taken a few bites of her Pad Se Ew and pronounced it as inedible. She said the noodles tasted like salt, pepper, and chili peppers, while the tofu tasted like black bean sauce. My daughter mostly eats Thai, Indian, and Vietnamese cuisine. She also cooks it at home for herself and her guests. She knows good food. She refused to eat another bite. I called over the male waiter and asked if he was the manager. He said he was. I told him the problem with my daughter's food (she is 30 but was too embarrassed to complain) and he could see it was barely touched. I asked what he'd do about it and he acted offended and was at first unwilling to do anything. He finally said he'd offer me a discount for our next time there. What was I supposed to do - argue with him? When the young lady brought us the check (by the way, everything was very overpriced considering the neighborhood and quality of food), I saw a card on top offering 10% off to "special guests." I guess in this instance, "special guests" means those people stupid enough to return for more dismal cooking. The card accidentally fell on the floor and I left it there where it belonged. I told her we wouldn't be back. As we were leaving, I heard one of the men at the other table also express displeasure with their meal. What a surprise! Not. I believe with all my heart that this restaurant will be out of business in 6 months.
This was the best Thai Restaurant I have dined at. Very authentic and tasty!! And friendly service and fast too. I would definitely recommend this spot.
I ordered an appetizer and an entrée. Both arrived at the same time.
STAY AWAY FROM FISH CAKE!
I ordered the fish cake. All imitation. No real seafood is used. It's chewy like rubber. $12 down the drain!
The curry was average.
Be careful on spiciness calibration. 5/10 was very hot for me, and I love spicy food!
Horrible service.
Tried to call to ask questions and got hung up on, twice. The first time, they told me to hold. Then the second time, they answered (I could hear them in the background), didn’t say anything for 10 seconds, then hung up.
I hate leaving bad reviews, but got the Chicken Pad Thai and asked for them to add shrimp and pork to make it a combination Pad Thai. Got charged 5 dollars for each addition. So I ended up having a 30 dollar Pad Thai during lunch. I'm not a cheapskate by any means, but 5 bucks for each addition? Next time I will spend that extra 10 dollars in gas to drive to Convoy.
Updating review since new ownership.
Pro: they have spruced up the place quite nicely.
Con: I came in at the end of 2022. I knew ahead of time there was new ownership and thought I would check it out as online showed they still had a good lunch special. I was immediately greeted but she seemed annoyed when I said I'd be dining in (my guess is because I was solo). When she saw I was looking at the lunch special that was ON their menu and their website, she informed me they did not have a lunch special available until the new year (week away at the time). Ok that's annoying as hell but I figured I might as well stay so I can judge for myself if I would be back. I ordered curry for $16. A little pricey I thought but maybe it's huge portions. She then informed me that rice isn't included and would be an additional $3! Almost 20 bucks for curry! I said nevermind and walked out. I'll come back one more time now that it's the new year to try the lunch special but if it isn't a better experience nor tasty food I definitely won't be back.
Disrespectful and rude staff. Food is expensive and of low quality
I used to drive 30+ miles just for this Thai food and always ordered the pineapple curry. When the new management took over, they no longer served it. Looks like I will be looking for a new Thai food place, and I will not be coming back.
The food was very good. All the items ordered were fresh, flavorful and just the right amount of spice levels. The service could have been a lot better. I would go back for the food!
Received wrong order
We ate the Sweet and Sour Pork, Thai Green Curry, and Pineapple Fried Rice with Thai teas. This place is the best Thai place in SD we have tried. Highly recommended to anyone looking for authentic Thai food for a very reasonable price.
Allergy issues! Poor customer service.
The biggest issue was: We got shrimp instead of chicken wings. Also all food was way spicier than it ever was (we were regulars about a year ago and loved the food. We'd eat here weekly). When we called to rectify this, we were told to bring food back and they'd remake it. We drove back across town to return the food, we were not comped. There was no concern for the shrimp vs chicken even when I told them my husband has a shellfish allergy. Also the cashier had a poor attitude when we discussed spice level. Old management we'd order 6-7 and today's 4-5 we're much hotter than before. Family visiting from out of town work in restaurants and said in most businesses we'd either be comped our meals, be delivered new food, or even both. We also understand there is a Thai spicy but friends of ours from Thailand said if you are not Thai typically restaurants adjust accordingly. Even the remade food was hotter than we could handle after asking to adjust spice to a 2.
We used to eat here often but apparently not since ownership changed. New ownership provides very poor customer service. We were unaware of this change and will not be back. The dining room was empty and I now understand why. I can't imagine this place will last long with the way they treat customers.
Price is also higher than it was. $15.95 for a tofu noodle dish that is missing the vegetables is not right. It has increased significantly in the past year and the taste is sub par.
Theyre under new ownership and the quality of food and service has really regressed
Food was incredibly underwhelming - the drunken noodles were way too oversalted with soy sauce and the pad Thai didn’t have the best flavor. Overall really disappointing especially for the high prices. It was almost $50 for the two noodle entrees and an appetizer (2 pc curry puff). The curry puffs were at least good, but still way too overpriced.
Overpriced. Was charged $5.00 to add broccoli to my yellow curry to-go order yesterday and they didn’t give me any broccoli. They also didn’t secure the lid to the curry and it spilled all over the bag. The owner and server were also rude - overall, Bad service and mediocre food. Won’t be back.
The food was amazing! I highly recommend the Thai dumplings, drunken noodles, and the pad Thai.
We absolutely intend to visit again!

I’m disappointed that Tom Yum soup does not have “bowl” size anymore, only Hot-Pot size so it’s pricier.
Great service and amazing food! I arrived between lunch and dinner, but the owner said I could sit and drink until the cooks returned from break. She put my order in when they arrived back and it came out quick. I had the pineapple fried rice and it was delicious; just the right amount of sweet and spicy. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!
Worst experience ever!!! First they never served my wife her food. I requested they just prepare it to go, since we had already shared my food, but they tried to serve it to the table instead, after waiting for them to finally prepare it. Got home and opened the bag and there was only 4 pieces of shrimp and no Panang, or rice.
This place is awesome. We were the last one that night to visit this restaurant. The owner was so courteous to welcome us and served the most delicious thai food. Food is great. Spice level 5 would be spicy for Americans.
Excellent service, inexpensive prices, and delicious Thai food. …we were very pleased.
This is my favorite Thai restaurant in San Diego. I’ve sampled many of their dishes but especially love their yellow curry and panang curry. My food always arrives freshly made, hot and delicious. The friendly, good-looking staff and owners always welcome me and make me feel at home.
Very nice Thai food. Lunch special menu includes salad, spring rolls, Thai curry and rice. Go to place for lunch.
Great service, great food, great people!
Worth checking out, bunch of selection and great service
The food was outstanding and the Service was “Top Notch”
The food is very tasty
The Establishment is very clean
This is going to be a regular stop two times a week for me and I will bring some friends along
Stop by, you will not be disappointed

Used to be 4-5 star food, but not anymore with the change in ownership. The chicken pad see eew used to be great, but was very sub par when I went more recently. Not BAD food necessarily but I won’t be going back.
I ordered the panang curry because I was craving it after a long day of work. The curry was one of the most delicious curries I've tried. It was exactly what I was expecting since the place near my home overuses the fish sauce for their curries. Service was okay too. The reason why I am giving 4 starts instead of 5 is because of the price; $20.42 for a single order of panang curry? That is a little extreme. They should consider offering lower prices.
My mama and I came here twice before and the food was delicious. We came today excited and hungry and were disappointed. Not happy with the new ownership. The shrimp pad Thai came with 3 little shrimp and was very dry and the potsticker and egg roll was cold! I asked the waitress about the 3 shrimp and she said yes thats all it comes with. Decided not to order dessert. Will not come back so many other good Thai food.
Wonderful curry every time. Great comfort food.
Absolutely worst customer service. Got the order wrong. Called them to fix that but instead the girl started arguing with us. We went there to re order it but they got into heated argument with us. Very very rude behavior from the girl taking the orders and the girl whom we talked to about our order issue. Don’t ever go there if you want a courteous and friendly customer service.
This was hands down the best Thai food I've ever eaten, they just changed owners and now it's horrible. Different recipes and completely gave me the wrong order. Stapled it shut and didn't realize until I got home, asked for salmon at a #2 out of 10 my mouth was on fire hands down the spiciest thing I've eaten. Don't go here they don't refund if they screw up your order, btw over priced $60 for salmon and chicken alacarte and a side of rice
This place recently changed ownership. Sam the original owner was wonderful and the food was always fresh and delicious. I recently ordered after not going for a few months and was extremely disappointed. The yellow curry from before was absolutely amazing, what they are serving now is sugary garbage. If I wasn’t starving I would have thrown it out. Now I have a stomach ache and feelings of regret. I’m genuinely heartbroken that the old California Thai Cafe is no more.
This is an updated review. As of 3/23/22 this place is under new ownership and is no longer the same. Under the previous ownership, I went here a lot and normally ordered the yellow curry at a lower spice level and never had a problem. The curry was delicious and unique. Went in after the place reopened and I am not impressed. The curry was not the same and nowhere near as good as before. I also ordered it at a spice level of 3 which is what i always have ordered, but what I got was much spicier, almost to a point that it was hard to eat. Very sad to see it change like this 😞 and will definitely miss the old food.
Was admitted to the hospital for an allergic reaction.
The meal I ordered was a BBQ Pork See yew noodle.
5 minutes in I had a full blown allergic reaction and had to be admitted for highly contagion.
I am severly allergic to shellfish and what I ordered was not a shellfish or seafood dish so I am not even sure why that happened. I never got a reaction from other thai places making See Yew noodles.
The only way this would happen is if they cross-contaminate food such as Using the same pan that had seafood with non seafood related food.
I'll be going back to my previous thai spot. Its a bit farther away but its better than getting a reaction.
This place is a gem. Quick service and delicious food. I especially love the vegetable pad see ew.
Very tasty and reasonably priced. Check out the lunch special. Great deal. Soup, egg roll and a selection of main courses. Usually not packed and you can find easily parking spot and a sit
Wonderful food! We haven’t had Thai this good in a while. Delicious
The food was delicious and filling. I loved it and will be coming back for sure!
Been eating here for several years with family & friends. Family owned business. Sam is amazing! Food is authentic Thai. High quality ingredients & generous portions. Been to Thailand several times & love their food.
Shrimp fried rice is so excellent!!!
The seafood soup was good, but the portion of seafood was kinda small. My biggest issue was the wait time, I waited 20 minutes for them to tell me they didn't have the ingredients for my wife's order. A waste of my time.
Very tasty 😋
I had the Spicy Basil lunch special. It was just ok. Tasted like Chinese food not Thai. The spring roll and fried won ton were both Chinese and Thai. The soup had raw zucchini chunks in it. Not horrible. Just overall unimpressed.
Yet another great SD resto that was willing to accommodate my vegan diet. Got a delicious vegan pad Thai with potato, mushroom, onion, and I'm especially loving their spicy raw vegan green papaya salad. You must ask for no fish sauce, but not every employee knows it's okay
The only good dish from my dinner was tom kha soup rest curry and see-ewe noodles were awful. Don’t get dumplings, they are so garlicky, it’s like biting piece of garlic.
New customer. Glad I stopped here. Good dish. Thai Pasta w/ BBQ pork. 👍
I got green curry and pineapple fried rice! You are able to change your spice level on both dishes and is enough for several servings. Also u can request to have no cashews in the pineapple fried rice :) the green curry does not come with white rice. U must order it.
They packaged everything To go with forks and napkins.
Delicious Curry
Got the lunch special Thai Pasta with spring rolls, wontons, soup and salad. Very good vegetarian food. Coconut Curry soup with squash was amazing, too bad the container wasn't sealed enough as it spilled all over the place. Pasta felt little hard first but once mixed the curry sauce on the bottom it was pretty good. Wontons and rolls were crispy and not too oily. I will probably grab lunch another time and try their thai iced tea as well.
Always delicious!
Best Thai food in SD, if you enjoy Thai iced it's a must have! They have great lunch specials that include a perfect portion, an appetizer sample and small soup.
I absolutely love this game place! I try to come here often their yellow curry is to literally die for. I come here so much they already know my order! If you are in the area this place is a must try!
Beef Curry is Amazing. We always have a great meal and great service.
Poor quality food for the price
Nice balance between the small family owned atmosphere and huge flavors of Thai and a touch of class (cloth napkins) without going "fancy" which I find usually dulls the flavors of the food.
The food was amazing. The owner was terrific!!!
Tasty. Large quantity with the lunch special. Good deal.
Food was great, lunch special is inexpensive but satisfying
The Thai food is excellent. Highly recommend
Nice food
Great spot for a quick lunch! Very friendly staff and the food was delicious. They do not serve beef, which is how I normally get my yellow curry, but the chicken was delicious.
I have been going for over 15yrs. All time favorite Thai food!!!!
One of the best lunch thai places in SD
Went earlier today with family for lunch and let me tell you, I finished my whole plate plus my sisters. Lol You can say I will definitely be coming back here again.
It was good food, it wasn't made for great ambiance, and the service want bad. I can't give this not and pop a three star as it should not be compared to the nicer Thai places say in Del Mar, CA.
Sweet ma and pa place for simple Thai food
Very clean restaurant! Very friendly and wanting to please. Tasty fresh spring rolls. They were also quite fast. I love this place! Staff have always been kind to us and their food is great! This is the families go-to place when we want to have Thai for lunch.
Great food & service 😋
We stopped here for an exceptionally early dinner. The place is not as cozy as many Bostonian restaurants. But the food makes up for it.
The stir fried and the tofu pot was delicious. The Thai triangles were great appetizers.
Great Service!
Good lunch spot. The owners are super nice and friendly, which makes a difference.
Nice food with very good service!
The food is tasty but the service is amazing 😃 The owners are extremely polite.
The Lemon Chicken is so good!
Delicious food and fast service
$10 lunch can't be beat in my opinion. Panang Curry was excellent, and so was the entire meal.
Best Thai food ever
Loved it..yellow curry best in the West
Delicious food, super generous portions. What else do you need?
Awesome little Thai place with amazing food and service. Great lunch special too. Generous helpings, good prices, all the food is fantastic
Good quality food. Great value for the price.
Great local Thai spot. The larb is great, healthy and full of flavor. All the currys are excellent ad well. Support this place for its awesome food and reasonable prices!
Awesome family run Thai restaurant
Hidden Thai cafe with good food.
Great customer service, clean environment, and excellent value on the lunch specials.
We love this little place. The food is so good and the people are so friendly, warm and inviting. The perfect calming, place after radiology down the street! :-) love it!
.. I'm sorry. ok but putting in t
A hot bowl of Tom Yum chicken soup with lemon grass on a cold rainy was the delicious cure for my itchy throat as I teetered on the brink of coming down with a cold. And a cup of ginger tea was the finishing touch to the tasty meal. I'm coming here again!
Authentic!
Fresh. Real food. Delicious. The catfish is amazing!
Parking was too obnoxious(every parking space is poorly designated); never going there again.
Delicious spicy noodle and shrimp coconut soup. Yum. Great service.
