WOW. Okay, so first and foremost these portions are HUGE! I easily had enough for two meals for myself for an amazing price. Apparently they hand fillet and hand bread their fish, and you can tell! Crunchy, golden, and super well seasoned. My leftovers crisped up nicely in the air fryer (a sign of quality) - and even the leftover fries quickly revived! For the love of everything, put your leftovers in the oven or an air fryer (and let’s face facts - putting fish in a microwave should be a felony). A++++++++ can’t wait to got to Freighthouse Square to eat here again!

The catfish, shrimp, and hush puppies were very good. Fish was very moist and breading was super crisp, perfect combo. The chowder was chunky, thick and full of flavor. Service was super quick and the staff were very attentive, asking if we needed anything several times throughout our meal. Would definitely come back! Chef warned us the cocktail sauce was homemade and had a good kick. Nah ,it wasn't that "slap yo mama" kick, but it was tasty. Much Better than jarred stuff. Price was fair. Highly recommend

The food was great. Best fish I’ve have in town in some time. The owners were very welcoming and there Mrs. told us that her husband comes in and cleans the halibut every morning. You could taste the freshness🤞🏽 side note the clam chowder (kiss the chef✨) My new favorite for fish and chips.

Me and my fiancée stopped by the Freighthouse Square for a bite to eat and decided to try out a place we had seen for several years but had not eaten there yet. We were both amazed beyond words.

We saw the beautiful pictures of salmon. fish & chips and shrimp and while we where trying to decide out from beyond the counter popped the most cheerful man Tom that acted like we were the most important people in the world. He recommend the special with fish & chips and shrimp. The picture looked generous for the price which as most people know is usually too good to be true.

Tom came and prepared the table with the same brightness and before too long he brought out the food on these beautiful large plates. Too our surprise it looked belter than the picture. I first tasted the fries and they were perfectly done, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Then I tasted the Cod. It was superb, the light panko crust and fresh tasting cod was heaven. It was cooked in clean light oil and was some of the best fried cod I ever had. Lastly, I tried the shrimp and it was just as wonderful dipped in a top notch cocktail sauce.

Tom kept coming out several times to make sure were ok and each time with the zest of life he had in his eyes moved us. We complimented him and asked why was he so happy. He told us that he survived a near death illness and this was his first time out in the world again after a long time thinking it was going to be his last time on earth. We were moved so deeply.

I said hi to the owner and talked to the chef and learned that they clean and slice the fish every morning and that the panko was a high quality brand. They said to come back because they have different specials every Thursday's and Friday's and I need to try the salmon.

We will! This was better then some of the top seafood names in town and more like a five star restaurant in quality. We will definitely go again and we look forward to seeing Tom again.

Owner is one of the nicest businessmen we’ve ever met. When not too busy, he makes sure all the little details are cared for. Customer service is 10/10, and the fish are one of the BEST around🤤no frills, just good fish, good fries, and good sauce.

Took the T line to the Freight House Square and ordered the Fish and Shrimp special. At $20.95 I was thinking it was a bit expensive. That is until they put this pile of fish and shrimp in front of me. I couldn’t even eat half of it and I’m no light weight. I ate the other half today and promptly fell asleep in my recliner. I got 2 complete meals from that plate.
The fish and shrimp were perfectly cooked and I really enjoyed the fries. It’s a family run place and they are very welcoming. I enjoyed the experience. If you like your fish fried head to Paya Thai Fish and Chips.

You'd think good fish and chips would be easy to find in a city almost surrounded by water, you would be wrong.

I had the catfish and chips which was perfect. Fresh, generous sized pieces of fish, not soggy which is how they need to be with fries which were crispy without being overdone.

Both the cook and the woman on the till were both really pleasant, listening to my questions and suggesting what to get. They also put in a hush puppy for me to try as I asked about them.

After I finished the woman also came out to ask what I thought about the meal, which was a nice touch.
I will be back.

I'm dog and house sitting in Seattle and came down to the Tacoma/Pierce Transit Bus Shop (across the street from Tacoma Dome Amtrak Center) to get a senior reduced fare Orca Card. The Tacoma Dome Amtrak Station is inside the freight house along with a food court and small businesses. We'll, I found a gem here. It's called PAYA THAI FISH AND CHIPS. Their signatures dishes are the Clam Chowder and Cod fish and chips. These are made fresh daily. If you are a restaurant ambience snob, this place is not for you. If you like real fresh cod fish and chips and great clam chowder, I think you'll really enjoy it. The clam chowder is as good or better than the best I've ever had. It's apparently made with no dairy, which is hard to believe because it's so tasty. The cod fish is fresh, flaky and moist - not fishy or oily. So good. I had the combo cod fish and chips dinner which came with fries (excellent - not dry, not oily, and golden brown) and Coleslaw (very tasty, not to much sauce). The only thing i didn't enjoy too much was the starter sauce - it was okay but nothing special..don't let that turn you off, they have other sauces available.
As mentioned previously, this restaurant is inside the food court inside the freighthouse which is a funky old building. But it was clean inside and I felt safe. There were a number of security people outside walking around outside and I felt safe here. I don't know if I'd go alone after dark, but I could be wrong.
Bottom line, if you're looking for some great Clam Chowder and Fish and chips, you should try this out. All of our small businesses could use our support. The next time you're at the Dome, you should stop by. The staff is friendly and the food is fresh.

Best fish and chips around by far!! The chowder is also top notch!! The owners are always welcoming and fun. We came in for a 3 piece and ended up getting an extra peice from the owner and a sample of the chowder.

My only "complaint" is this place isn't right down the street from me. The cod is panko breaded and is the absolute best.

The halibut and fries were excellent. I've had better coleslaw and chowder so I'll be getting a la carte on just the fish and fries next time. Excellent service and a very friendly staff.

Literally just left Paya Thai. The best fish and chips I have ever had without question and also by far the best service and friendliness I have ever experienced at a counter service restaurant. This was also my first time having clam chowder (I’m from central Texas), and now I’m going to be dreaming about this clam chowder until I come back to Seattle/Tacoma for it here at Paya Thai. Such a wonderful first impression by the food and people here. I will absolutely come back.

Wow! That was the best fish so fresh and crispy not greasy tasting. The last teresa is so sweet and is consistently working and making you happy. A must go and try those delicious fried shrimps too!

We've been here twice and the food was perfect both times. The owner clearly has worked for decades in the hospitality industry, as he treated us with 5 star service. Absolutely will be back.

This is hands down the best fish in the Tacoma and surrounding area.

The atmosphere is quaint with tons of history and there is little specialty shops to check out as well.

The proprietors and employees are friendly and efficient and make you feel comfortable and welcome.

The food is what makes this our go to dining out choice every time. The fish is fresh, flakey and delicious. We order the Captains Platter and share between two and still have leftover.

We love the scallops, clams, oysters and shrimp, the clam chowder is to die for, the absolute best. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

In came into Freighthouse Square on a lark yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by the lively atmosphere. Decided on fish and chips. It was beautifully plated and as delicious as it looks. Everyone working were kind and attentive, I even got a sample of the clam chowder, which I very much look forward to next time.

Ordered the captains platter. Just wasn’t to my liking. The clams were chewy and the oysters tasted just plain horrible. The fish was tough. However the chowder had wonderful flavor and was very tasty. However again, clams were very chewy. I enjoyed Ivars better than here.

I am 74. I was with my niece and my daughter and my granddaughter. It was a fun atmosphere. Lots of high school kids there at their lunch time. It was fun watching them interact with each other. Food is always good. Fish and chips are great!

Very good lightly battered fish that was super crispy. It was 3 o’clock in the afternoon and the grease they used for frying was in great condition for frying. The fries were also just as very good and the clam chowder decent. A bit salty, like most, but full of chunky goodness. The fish is a bland fish and the batter is a on the bland side but that is how good fish and chips should be. It’s perfect with the tartar sauce and malt vinegar.
The two people there cooking and ringing everything up seemed like they were the owners. They were very nice, brought our food out to the table and bused the table after we left. The Mr. even checked on us during our meal and this is not a full service restaurant. They had a “GREAT” score from the health department displayed and it looked to deserve the score.
It’s not the best atmosphere as it’s in a complex that is attached to other indoor walk up restaurant and shops down the way a bit like a flea market back east. We drive there from Puyallup just for this meal but worth the drive.

Came here for business and can't help but sing praises for this place. Firstly, super down to earth, couple, amazing service. Ordered a 2 piece cod combo, and was served within 5 minutes. The clam chowder blew me away, completely loaded and flavor packed, the fish was fresh and not overbreaded. Definitely going to be one of my go to spots whenever I visit Tacoma! Keep it up!

Excellent Fish n Chips, possibly the best in Tacoma. I'm still conducting that Contest. Great Service! Atmosphere I rated at 4 stars only because it's in an old warehouse, feels kind of like a flea market cafeteria. Parking wasn't very well marked either and a little confusing. There is a Free Parking sign that points to the left but its past the entrance of the parking garage so you have to drive around the block.

Took my mom there a few days ago she loves the fish and chips best chowder ever and the fish and chips are amazing 5 stars

I have a friend that works for Paya Thai. I stopped by to say hello and ended up ordering the 5 piece fish n chips. I was blown away. The cuisine was delicious. I ordered it to go but couldn't wait, so I tried a bit. I want everyone reading this review to know Paya Thai is so worthy of your patronage. The menu was broad. The service was to tier ( as fast food businesses go). I spoke at length with the owner of the history of her restaurant. She was warm and passionate about the service she provides. I stopped in today 9/15/2023 and tried the clam chowder...OH MY GOD...the best I've tasted in all my 67 years. I highly recommend you visit this wonderful Fish&Chip restaurant. Plenty of seating. Great atmosphere for the whole family.

We have tried several spots during our visit to the area… upscale, down home, and local favs. The “food court” type multi-restaurant establishment is not on the higher end, but the food was just as good, if not better, than places we paid double & triple for. The cod, shrimp, and clams were very good. The prices are reasonable and the customer service was great! I highly recommend if you want a good seafood meal for a reasonable price.

My wife and I really enjoyed the food, and will gladly come visits again. It was worth the money.

Anyway, when she went to the bathroom, she ditched me. Turns out her ex was hanging out in downtown Tacoma and he stole my Hyundai using my USB-C cable. He picked her up in my car, and streamed it on Tik-Tok, and... I followed his account because, well, her ex was hot.

Paya Thai has hands down the best Fish and Chips. Large portions that always leaves me full. The staff is super accommodating and checks on customers frequently. Their Clam Chowder and Salads are among my other favorites.

Loved this gem! A very kind lady whom I assume is the owner came by a few times and struck conversation. Very warm experience, and the food matched the people. Superb clam chowder. I'm not the expert, but that was the best I've ever had. The cod was also amazing. Overall amazing. Thanks yall.

Wow!! Love this place so much. Had scoped them out before visiting town and was even more blown away when we actually tried them. Got the cod fish n chips plate that comes with coleslaw, fries and clam chowder. The fish and chips were amazing as we had expected but the clam chowder was the best either my husband or I have ever had. Planning on grabbing another bowl before we go home.
Not only was the food so good but we had this sweetheart (owner?) who gave us recommendations on best ways to get around and things to do with our night. Thanks so much for the hospitality and great food.

The special platter for $20 just doesn’t beat anything else in town. Super crispy fish, juicy shrimps, their fries and house made horseradish cocktail sauce and tartar are my favorite. The fish is never a grease pile and I never feel disgusting afterwards. The salmon caesar salad is also amazing. Always consistent. The owners are always so kind and hospital. We will continue to support this business for our fish n chip fix!

Each one of the staff were so attentive and genuinely kind. Some of the best service I’ve had in a long time. The food was outstanding. Clam chowder was better than the overpriced cup we had at Pike’s Place the day prior. Convenient location for groups because of the mall set up with lots of other options.

Got the fish and chips special with shrimp. Good. Fast.

Really good prices! Really good food! My husband got the 3pc cod combo and I got the 2 pc halibut combo. Came loaded with fries yummy coleslaw and a cutely cut lemon! Will definitely be back!
Also it is in a fun location with lots of local and second hand style shops.

Best Fish N Chips I've had in a long while. The pictures i saw in the restaurant's profile enticed me and i was not disappointed. Best of all, they asked me when do i want to pick up, and i said in 2 mins and voila it was ready by the time i walked in. Best aioli dipping. Worth every buck. Five star is understatement.
