Low-key eatery with a large menu of traditional Chinese fare, along with a few Thai options.
I recently ordered over $60 worth of food from Young Chow Cafe, expecting a great meal that included shrimp fried rice. However, as soon as I opened the food, I noticed something was very wrong there was absolutely no shrimp in the so-called "shrimp fried rice." I called the restaurant immediately to resolve the issue.
At first, a non-English speaking lady answered the phone and remained silent, offering no help. Then, a man took over the call and, shockingly, his response was "What do you want me to do?" It was dismissive and frustrating. Instead of correcting their mistake, they acted as if it wasn’t their problem.
This kind of service is completely unacceptable, and it feels like the restaurant is stealing from its customers. If you're thinking about ordering from here, BEWARE! This experience left a very bad taste in my mouth - both figuratively and literally.
Save yourself the hassle and take your business elsewhere.
I really wanted to like this place. I ordered Crab Rangoon, Beef on a Stick, Fried Wontons, Chicken Pad Thai, and Combination Fried Rice and unfortunately I didn’t enjoy any of it. I tried to make it work and eat what I could but the fried wontons were so hard and empty (see photos below), the Rangoon was okay. And I have to say after working in a Thai restaurant myself for 2 years, this was NOT pad Thai at all. Pad Thai is supposed to have a sweet taste and this was very plain. $59 dollars down the drain, I hope the lady enjoys her $5 tip because I didn’t enjoy any of the food :(
Carry-out of Szechuan beef and kung pao chicken were very good and plentiful last week. This weekend we purchased 2 orders of shrimp pad thai and soup ($38) and it was so disappointing. It is all noodles, 4 shrimp, a teaspoon of peanuts, no scallions, no bean sprouts, nothing. Just a big bowl of noodles and what tastes like the same sauce that goes in drunken noodles. For the money, it was disappointing. We had hoped we found our Asian food carry-out place.
Surprisingly good for a little Chinese-Thai restaurant in a strip mall. We had stopped at Haymarket, VA to charge up my car's battery, and we decided to have dinner. Google Maps suggested the Young Chow Cafe. It had good reviews, and the reviews were well deserved.
The space was clean and neat. The decor was basic but pleasant. The menu gave plenty of choices.
I had my usual Chinese meal, house chow mein. It was delicious. My wife and daughter both enjoyed their meals.
If you're in Haymarket, VA around mealtime and if you like Chinese or Thai cuisine, Young Chow Cafe is fine. I recommend it.
Over the past several months Young Chow Cafe food has improved. Unfortunately, tonight, it reversed. The food was so salty, we couldn't eat it, & the ribs were terrible, dried up and burnt like 2 days ago meat! Yuk!
So much "BREADING" on the General Tao's SHRIMP! I had a plate of Tao's sauce soaked bread on my plate after ATTEMPTING to eat the dish! Nice host, short wait for food and quaint dining area. I will try the Cafe again because they are a small local Haymarket Restaurant and perhaps they can readjust their recipe! Shrimp Fried Rice was good, lots of shrimp🐟

Young Chow Cafe is the best Chinese and Thai restaurant in the area by a landslide. I have never had anything bad here. Red curry is great, fried rice is fantastic and the general Tso chicken is super good. Everytime I'm in town I'm always trying to stop by and grab a bite!
Best Chinese in the area.
Worst food I have ever had ..so salty it was difficult just to swallow it..hence into the garbage it went....never will go back..my health is too important to eat this horrible food

Do yourself a favor and stop here if you want to be pleasantly surprised! The egg foo young is my favorite. Best Chinese food in town!

Reliably good food and fast take away service
Low key local Chinese food restaurant that reminds me of the neighborhood joints in California. Food was good - Kung Pao and tofu hunan style. Lots of take out orders, but we were the only people dining in.

Nice people great food
One of my favorite restaurants for many years now. I used to go to Manassas Young Chow until it closed. Now I have to drive to Haymarket but it's worth it!
Delicious authentic Chinese restaurant one of the best in the DMV area
Good food. Friendly staff. Great spring rolls.
Looked kind of empty at first but the food was amazing! Like actually top notch! Definitely coming back.
Great family owned business. Delicious EVERY time!!!!
Been here a couple times and haven’t had a bad experience, The staff is always friendly and food is always so good and quick!!

That's the first time I have ever stopped in here. I found the staff to be very nice in the food to be good.
* I have return to hear several times since the first review I made back almost 4 months ago.
This is my go-to place for Asian food, I only wish they did sushi rolls.
Good food decent prices fast service as well would recommend for a quick solid Chinese food option in Haymarket
Food comes out very fast and it tastes good. The meat portion is very generous.
The absolute kindest staff and best Chinese food in the area. Must try!
The food is delicious, best wonton soup I ever had! The place is very clean and the service is great and fast. Too bad I don't live close by to visit more often, but that'll be a mandatory stop when traveling north from now on.
Good food at a good price. Service is fantastic.
Love this place!
My Mom was in the hospital and could only have clear broth to eat. I ordered a small bowl of wonton soup with no wontons and only the broth. When I can to pick it up, they gave it to me free of charge as a holiday gesture.
After spending the entire day at the hospital with my mom, I was exhausted… This random act of kindness in my day, and honestly made me cry. Thank you to the restaurant for making a sad person, smile. And the soup broth was delicious!
I’ve had the egg drop soup several times, and it’s always good.
Unfortunately, I got sick after having a few bites of the sesame shrimp dish that’s listed under the chef’s selection. It’s been 15+ hours since I ate this, and I am still nauseous. Not sure if the shrimp itself was cooked because of the heavy deep fry. The server apologized for the food, but that doesn’t take away how it made me feel sick overnight and today. I won’t be going back.
Definitely the best Chinese restaurant in the Haymarket/Gainesville area.
Food: it taste freshly made and you can actually taste the authentic flavor of the dish. It’s not all salt/oil/sugar like other Chinese restaurants. Their rice is also the freshest. Their food quality is great.
Parking: plenty of parking
Restaurant ambience: I’ve only done takeout but the place is clean and well-maintained.
Customer Service: if I could give 100 stars I would. The owner is just so lovely and nice. When my husband does the food pickup and has our toddler with him, the owner goes out of her way to help him open the door, etc. the owner also gave me a few extra fortune cookies for my toddler when I asked for just a couple LOL. She’s super nice!
Delivery: they unfortunately don’t have delivery service yet (as far as I know). I wish they would be in doordash or something..
I LOVE this place!!!! I have been coming here since I was little girl! When they were at their oldest location that’s now a highway lol but I love this place! It’s always good and the owners are so polite place is always clean and the orange beef is my favorite!
The food is not tasty at all.
This place is great!! I had a great time enjoying a variety of their dishes. The Pork Fried Rice was tasty, and the Lo Mein had a nice mix of flavors. The Mongolian Beef had a nice grilled flavor that added to its appeal, and the Spring Rolls were crispy and filled well. The Wonton Soup was comforting. The Sweet and Sour Pork had a good balance of flavors, and the Chinese BBQ Ribs were tender and had a nice smoky taste. It was a satisfying meal overall.
Smaller place, quick food and service.

Love the food and service ❤
The staff was so friendly and welcoming, and the food tasted fresh and flavorful. Will definitely come back!
I was in town visiting family. And I found this restaurant on line. The food way hot and ready when I got there yo pick it up. Great tasting food all around.
I'd reccomend it to a friend.
Enjoy!
I heard good things about this place but ended up being disappointed. I would not recommend unfortunately.
Excellent food! Everything was fresh!
Decent little local Chinese spot
Food is pretty good. But lack enough ingredients. Wish was more.
Super friendly, recommend to stop by!
I go to different Chinese restaurants to find the best ones. The food was fresh and hot but the portion size wasn't that big for dinner. It's a little pricey and the quality wasnt great even though it was fresh and hot. I ordered general tsos chicken and wasn't impressed.
Great local eatery that has really good Thai and Chinese food. Small inside as most people take away their food. Pay as you order then go sit and wait. You will be happy.
I picked food up today it was so awful . It tasted so horrible the sauce was so old and smelled like toilet water . I paid over $40 just to throw my food away . Do not recommend .
1st time in. Everything was hot and fresh. I will be back.
Best Chinese food in the area. The staff is so nice. And they keep the place super clean. 10/10
They close at 9:30 pm; we got there at 8:50 pm but according to the hostess, 40 minutes is not enough to prepare our food so we had to leave. Very disappointed.
Excellent service and great food. Very clean.
The best Chinese food around, I wish it was in the Front Royal area. If you haven't tried it yet you don't know what you are missing!!!
Great place for delicious Chinese food…
You have seating in the restaurant and take-out . Friendly service.
I heve been coming to this place for more that 10 years, the flavor still is the same and I love it.... Awesome food, great flavor....!!!
Not a fan of Chinese restaurants that don't let you substitute lo mein in place of rice.
I'm not sure if I just caught them at the wrong time. However, the food lacked taste and meat for the amount of money I paid.
Always consistently good food and great service
I wish they had table service...
1st time visit. Good price & food. Portions better then one closer
I grew up eating Young Chows and was excited to bring my kids here today but to my surprise, the food was horrible. Combination Singapore noodles had no salt and only came with shrimp and eggs. The Beef on the stick was like eating Beef Jerky it was hard and dry. The lady helping us was also super rude. I raved about Young Chows but this was such a disappointing experience. I would give it 0 stars if I could.
I would order food from here if you don't like flavor. Everything was very bland and the stuffing of the wantons and spring roll were very minimum...I felt like I was just eating dough.
They had my favorite dish crispy beef, the soup was fantastic and the staff was so nice and friendly 😊
Our go to spot for Chinese in haymarket! We have really enjoyed everything we've gotten here.
More people need to know about this place. It's comforting, good-valued, good ol' fashioned Chinese food. The service is so fast, so friendly, the portions are generous and TASTY! So comforting it'll make you cry on a hard day, and their crab rangoons are good! Not overly sweet and nice hot and crunchy. The chicken fried rice has chunks of chicken, and they let you grab the sauces you need out in the open. I love this place, it's my go-to.
Over salty and unhealthy as can be. This place was okay years ago but now food is salty to the point of getting your lips wrinkled from dehydration. Do yourself a favor and eat anything other than this place, unless heart attack is something you look forward to.
The food is always high quality and the folks that own the restaurant are just the nicest people. We really enjoy ordering take out from Young Chow Cafe.
Great service and atmosphere
They overcharge!! Don’t trust the price on the menu because they will charge you more by $3+ and awful service the employees are rude and give you attitude.
Great food. Prices seem a little higher this time but not a deal breaker. The spring rolls are delicious.
Great Chinese Food. Super nice people.
I found a blood clots in my food🤮
Stopped to charge my Tesla. Go the sha cha chicken and fried dumplings. Amazing! Not your typical Chinese carry out go there!
超好吃的木須肉,份量大又真材實料,一定還會再來。
This was the worst Chinese food I have ever had. I spent $47, drove 22 minutes and made the mistake by going by some of the good reviews. I spoke to the lady that answered the and the Chef letting them know my dissatisfaction of the meal I purchased. The Chef was upset I did not like it and I demanded a refund. Which he eventually agreed to. So I packaged the barely touched food, drove 22 minutes again and got my money back. I thought because of the reviews and the location it is in I would enjoy......nope and they are pricey! Never again 😒
Good food at decent price.
Good food.
We try to stop when in the area.
We had a Young Chow Cafe in our area, but the owner retired so we drive about 15 or so minutes to this location. Food is always hot, lady that works the desk and phone is always so nice. It's worth the drive. Spring rolls are the best. Dumplings are my second favorite behind the spring rolls. This is the combination Singapore noodles no curry add chow mean sauce and the fried dumplings.
The Pad Thai was the worst I’ve ever ordered - a carton full of sauce and other ingredients I couldn’t distinguish. Threw it away after one bite.
The food is great. I've been ordering from them since 2005. The owners are super friendly and courteous. They are very consistent too.
Great food nice family
The worst Chinese food period. Everything was so salty that’s all you taste. I ate about a third and threw away the rest. I will not be returning to this place out of fear of getting heart disease and that’s no exaggeration. If you value your health do not come here.
I've been ordering forever this place rocks!!!
Everything I have tried is good. Not much else to say. A solid choice if your in the mood for Chinese.
Soup was too salty. Big portions no flavor. ☹ disappointed
Very safe and excellent food
Great food. Their Thai Red Curry is my favorite food in the area.
The only thing that was awesome was the cleanliness and customer service, after reading the reviews I was optimistic to try the food. After ordering $50 worth of food the taste was very bland the chicken was not consistent some pieces were dry some were rubber and some were just perfect. The rice was perfect but overall I will never go again.
Delicious food. Great quality. Hard to get food spicy here which is my only gripe.
The duck and fried rice are delicious.
I asked for an order of genaral Taos chicken with light sauce and tobe extra crispy and another order with out bamboo shoots but both were ignored. My order was also cold and the sauce was horrible for the general Taos chicken. Not to mention the worse dumplings i ever had, it tasted like meatloaf inside. OVER PRICED BASIC CHINESE FOOD!!! highly disappointed.
Not only is the food good but the service is exceptional! They are so friendly whether you call in or walk in. I highly recommend!
The worst Chinese food ever in my life. And when I called and told the lady that the chicken lo mein and pad thai was nasty like it was old and smell werid. She told me to bring it bk after driving far away. Not a place I would recommend. Please don't waste your money and get sick.
Huge portions! The orange chicken had enough meat to feed two people easily. Quick service with hot, delicious food. Clean building with safe layout during COVID-19
This is the place to go for green curry chicken and also chicken fried rice. I love green curry and they do it the best in Virginia. And the owners and everyone there is kind and nice.
Love there food. Have become friends with them. Go and enjoy food.
My family and I have been going to young chow for many years even before they relocated to Haymarket and I have to say this is the best Chinese food
Excellent Chinese! Love this place and the family that runs it, nice wonderful people!
WARNING! The food at this restaurant is not satisfying. The Chinese food is too salty and oily such as the Broccoli Chicken and the Hot and Sour soup. The Thai food is not authentic at all. The Drunken noodle I ordered was also too salty and doesn’t have Thai flavor, but more of a Chinese flavor. Please don’t waste your money. I’m sure there are better places, but unfortunately I haven’t found it yet in Gainesville since I’ve moved here recently.
Great Food
Food is good
Very family oriented environment place and the serving is large.
Young Chow has the best Chinese food in the Haymarket/Gainesville area. This is a true family run business. Every time we go there the service is friendly and the food is outstanding. The dining area has room for small or large parties. The spring rolls and Crab Rangoon's are a must. Our friends from out of town beg us to bring them the hot and sour soup. For entrees try the Chicken Cashew and Sichuan Beef.
Delicious Chinese dishes. I always have their noodle soup which is rich with vegetables and flavors. The beef rice dish is delicious too. Good prices and friendly service.
Food was great
I got a large order of sweet and sour pork to go for only $11 (after tax) . The service was very fast, the place was clean and the folks at the front were polite. The food was hot and delicious and I think it was a fair price.
Great food always!!
Always good Mushu veggies. I order it often.
We get carry out from here all the time. The food is usually very good. Occasionally there is a drop off in consistency of the quality.
It is so nice to have a Chinese restaurant close by that gives you fast service is reasonably priced and provides delicious food. We go there often. Many people come in for take out and they are serve red very quickly. The portion sizes are either small or large, you decide and pay only a few extra dollars for the large size. They accommodate all sizes of appetites.
The Spring rolls were dark and over cooked, so we're the Crab Rangoon. The General Tso's was very good. Also the Wonton soup was good, but the crispy side noodles were very hard and not edible.
Our large family ate here and everyone loved it. The food was fresh and delicious, the service fast and friendly and the restaurant was clean. The prices were very reasonable too.
This is a small, unassuming place with great big flavors. The staff was quite pleasant when we were there. They seemed distracted. Possibly understaffed on a Saturday evening, so the service was a bit slow. As the crowd died down, though they found thier groove.
I'd give the following:
Food a very solid 5. And it arrived pretty quickly once we placed our order.
Friendliness a 5.
Attentiveness a 3 that eventually became a 4.5. I believe this is a byproduct of possibly being understaffed.
Cleanliness a 2 that eventually became a 4.5. Same as above.
Prices I would give a 5. I'm trading the quality and quantity vs. the cost.
I'm giving a 5 because I think they deserve it, even though the night we went seemed to be an off night. I would absolutely visit again.
Best mom-and-pop authentic Chinese in the area. Flavorful!
Delicious food 💜
Was put on hold forever never came back to take my take out order
Xt OP
Best prices in the area for Chinese. The quality is quite good. The employees are friendly and the food was ready quickly. The portion sizes are very large. Everything about this place is great and I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Highly recommend, this place is totally worth it.
Food was fresh, general Tso chicken was delicious. Good portion size, quick service, would highly recommend and will come back!
We ordered pick up for the first time. The food was ready on time and everyone was very courteous. The food itself was delicious! The portions generous. The proces reasonable. We will eat there next time for the full experience.
By far the greatest restaurant in Haymarket!!! Service is impeccable, food is outstanding!!! Have been eating there for years, and will continue to do so!!! Order anything on the menu and you will love it!!!
Coupons... Take advantage of them ;-)
Truly the best Chinese food place in the area, possibly ever. Excellent service and great food every single time.
Not sure how this place has such a good score on Google. I went for lunch, and ordered one of the lunch specials with an additional soup appetizer. I've had tastier Chinese food from my local grocery store hot-bar, which is a sad statement.
Clean, nice, friendly yes - I expect this to be normal. There was a lot of food for the money, I ended up taking some home (to add vegetables and sauce. to give it better flavor). But the food had no Chinese "taste". It was however, salty enough.
I ordered the Kung Pao chicken, which to me very clearly tasted like small fried chicken bits. Normally KP is not breaded. This was like fried popcorn chicken with carrot chunks and a few peanuts fried in a soy sauce oil. That is my largest complaint. Aged vinegars and spices do not cost THAT much to add just a tiny bit to a dish and give it good flavor.
