Sushi, dumplings, teriyaki, pad Thai & more is served in a casual, colorful space in a strip mall.
A very quiet and relaxing restaurant with great attention to a customer's needs. I haven't been here in over 5 years and the sushi, fried calamari, and spring rolls are as delicious as ever. Everything that I ordered came out perfectly, tasted amazing, and the serving size was just right. The cost is comparable with local sushi restaurants in the area, but it's my personal opinion that the customer service and quality has an edge over others.
My family and I come here at least twice a month and would be here weekly if we lived closer. They have the best sushi in NOVA. We’ve tried several places and this is the only place that comes close to sushi we’ve had on the west coast. Their fish is always fresh and they season their rice to perfection. They have lots of tasty looking dishes on their menu but the sushi is so good we have yet to try anything else.
teriyaki chicken was incredibly bland and almost rubbery, there was a roach crawling around and we were practically the only ones in the there. the service was great but the food made me really nauseous, which is sad because i used to eat here all the time when i was younger. 100$ for a stomachache and some arguably mid food.
Best Sushi
hanging up on me when i ask one question because you’re busy is crazy!! am i not a customer as well??

Ben always greets us like family and so does Suzie. We love eating here..I'm gluten sensitive and the chef used gluten free soy sauce in my fried rice. Thanks for everything.. love and Peace Debra and Ralph ❣️
terrible company. might have been great before. However, they are cutting corners. i ordered double jack and coke.. and she brought me house wiskey and coke.. i politely told her this was not Jack. she showed me the bottle and offered to pour another shot.. I could take the jack but still was obviously black label well. . the food came out okay.. the Wasabi was just paste.. do not recommend
Food not representative of photos on website. Small portion sizes. Very greasy compared to other Thai dishes served elsewhere. I ordered the kaprow. Little to no veggies, couldn't taste the Thai basil...just grease and fish sauce.
Nice saki selection and solid sushi.
The Thai dishes are quite enjoyable also.
excellent speciality rolls
Very very nice stuff, fresh California roll , and I’m obsessed with their fried drunken rice with beef!
Tasty sushi! Try fried drunken rice with beef!
Slowly brings out food they’ve already made!!
I’ve been coming here for decades; always delivers exceptional sushi, service, and Thai food. Great place to bring your kids or enjoy an evening out with your significant other.
This place is and has been our favorite for the last 12 years at least, always fresh, tasty, service is great and the food and sushi is the best I have had anywhere. I have had most likely 70% of the menu and always enjoyed everything.
They have a cocktail/drink that contains a white fruit...it is to die for.

The honey shrimp is the best roll. Will be coming back soon
Good food
Great, fast, friendly, attentive service. Even brought us a pair of kid's "training chopsticks" for my daughter to use, without me asking. Our server saw us running low on napkins and brought over more, again without me needing to ask. Sushi is perfectly crisp and fresh. Rolls are well made and hold together even after 2 bites. We come for the sushi, and always stick to the basics (nigiri roll, tuna roll, salmon roll, yellowtail, etc.). Tried the "Dancing Eel" chef special roll, and it was too fancy for my tastes. Pieces too big to easily fit in mouth, too many flavors trying to blend together, and too "artsy" looking. Like I said, come for the basic sushi and the great service and you won't go wrong.
Great sushi, went to catch up with my friend on a weekday afternoon. Totally would come back again not just for their sushi but there great customer service!
Exquisito sushi. Muy buena variedad. Buena presentación
Phenomenal. Had the poke bowl—easily the best poke bowl I’ve ever had. Good portions, too! Miso soup was also the best I’ve ever had. Reasonably priced and really clean and organized restaurant. Will be back!
All around terrific experience.
Most disturbing food experience of my life. Halfway through my Pad See Eaw, I found a small cockroach on my plate. When I showed the staff, they asked if I wanted another dish… no thanks.
Amazing authentic Japanese cuisine.
Pricey but worth it.

The sushi is delicious but the star of the show is the lychee martini. Our server Yuri makes them to perfection! We ended up having 2 each cause they’re so good, so big shoutout to Yuri! (I hope I remembered her name correctly, I looked at our receipt last night to memorize her name but not completely sure if I did remember correctly)
Magnificent Shogun Honor. perfect place for Japanese Restaurant dining services. Super Amazing. It’s also a place where they can serve traditional Asian/ Japanese cuisine with many different kinds of ingredients. Especially Sake. Really? Yes they do. It’s a drink though. They have many wines/ alcohol products they have there. Do they really? Sure they do. The Sushi bar is in front of the middle arena. When enter the restaurant, they’ll see many great things they have including traditional items they got plus portraits from their culture that is made in Japan 🇯🇵⛩️⚪️⚫️. Great restaurant found by the company. 100% . It’s one of the most popular, significant, impressive areas in the city. Oh is it ? Indeed. It’s no rocket math event in their service. Although they usually open in Afternoons and Evenings. Do they open in morning? I presume they don’t because of their reasonable schedules on the availability. Awesome area.
Their beef fried rice is just the best! Made with tiny bits of extras, like scrambeld egg, green onions, bean sprouts, chopped snow pea leaves (sometimes tiny bright green peas) & thinly sliced beef. For me, this is an authentic "best taste of home" available today.
Sushi is as good as any place I have tried, if not better. The ambiance is quiet and cozy, nice for a family dinner.
Consistently outstanding sushi. We recommend Yamazato often because even our pickiest friends are impressed by the quality. The non-sushi entree options aren't quite as good in my opinion, but the appetizers are excellent. Eat-in service AND delivery are reliably fast and pleasant. Prices are competitive and there are a lot of specialty rolls you won't find elsewhere. One of our favorite restaurants.
Very cute and cozy spot. Amazing food. I've tried the katsu and teriyaki and both experiences were seller. Really awesome staff!
I've lived here for a couple years now and have been to many sushi places looking for a good spot. It's my go to for Sushi in the NOVA area both for the food and the atmosphere.
Great food at good price.
The vegetarian roll and the dish my friend had was delicious. However, I have a constructive complaint. I ordered Pad Thai Jae off of the vegetarian menu. As someone who refrains from eating animal products, I was happy to see they had some promising options.
However, the Pad Thai Jae is made with fish sauce and is *not* vegetarian despite being advertised as such. The fish sauce was so pungent and forward in the dish that I found it inedible. If something is advertised as vegetarian, please make sure it truly is. A dish under the vegetarian section has to be vegetarian. I’ve had Pad Thai many times and have never had it with fish sauce. While I respect the tradition and the choice to make it with fish sauce, it should be removed from the vegetarian menu and fish sauce should be mentioned in the description of this dish.
Because I was unable to eat the dish, I mentioned the unexpected taste to the wait staff who was very kind in removing the dish from my bill. I really appreciated their desire to make the situation right, and would recommend this restaurant despite my one experience.
Very very good! I was surprised that they weren’t very busy. Please support this local restaurant.
My favorite that we tried was the hole in one. But everything was fresh and tasty!
Always excellent.
Fresh fish and good serving sizes. Yummy chef rolls and sushi special.
Sushi was excellent. Try Godzilla, Hole In One, Garden, Volcano, if you can't make up your mind.
Great service and definitely recommend this place.
One of the best sushi places Ive ever been! Ive been going here for nearly a decade or maybe even longer and have never had a bad experience. The food is consistently incredible, the sushi is amazing quality, and the service is super high quality and 100% down to earth. It's a pretty inconspicuous location but the interior is really relaxing and well-designed. I highly recommend the tempura ice cream, its an experience!
Sushi was delicious. Especially the Eagle Roll and the Supreme Tuna Roll.
Somehow this place is hit and miss. Pad se ew and sushi were good. The Udon dish was horrible. It's plain, like no taste at all. My kids said it tasted like water with plain noodles and plain veggies. However the shrimp tempura that came with it was so good. Service was not impressed either, only 1 server. She was nice but we couldn't wait 20-30 minutes to put the order in while hungry kids started to whine.
I love their large shrimp and vegetable tempura with crisp breading on crisp shrimp; shrimp have a great bite and taste. My companion loved the shrimp and scallop satay. My other companion lauds the sushi and rolls. It is a beautiful, intimate space with super friendly serving staff. It makes for a lovely evening. I cannot fathom how the word has not gotten out about this well run and delicious restaurant at a good price. I just want to make sure it is there for me next time. Suzi
Reasonably priced, great food with friendly staff/owners
My husband and I love dining here. My mother in law dined here every Saturday for a number of years. Food is amazing. Ed was a excellent server.
Yamazato is one of the places that we still choose to go for sushi. I am not sure exactly what happened to the eel sauce. It's the second sushi restaurant recently where I found it too sweet and too plentiful. On the positive side, we enjoyed the miso soup and my husband really enjoyed the drunken noodles. I got the rock and roll ...roll...and I am not sure why they use cream cheese. I prefer a good old fashioned dragon roll with eel and tempura shrimp. Formerly, Yamazato custom prepared the roll that I wanted, but I was urged to choose from the menu.
The elegant and vintage atmosphere makes me feel like I am in Japanese TV series of 2000-2010s. The light and music is perfect!
The roll is the best I have ever tried in US!
Sushi here is amazing. Cocktails are fine. Service is slow but worth the wait
Have been going here for years. Really fresh sushi and great cooked options. Always a treat!
I've been to many others, but this is the absolute best sushi spot in the area.
Top sushi spot in Northern VA, hands down!
Outstanding food quality here at this restaurant! All the items that myself and my family ordered was extremely well done and very tasty also when we visited here for the first time yesterday. Outstanding service also.
One of the most incredible Japanese Restaurants in the DC Area. Outrageous portions and authentic. Can't wait to go back !
Excellent service, food, and atmosphere
Best sushi in town it reminds me of nyc sushi 🍣 so yummy 😋
We were there last week for carryout. We live about an hour away, and we're coming back from Virginia and decided to stop. There were no other customers, which was a little concerning, considering it was nice inside and in a busy area. But it was late, and a Wednesday, so we didn't think too much of it.
We probably stuck out a bit, and requested to order carry-out. It took us a long time to order, and my bf looked up many photos of the rolls, so I'm guessing we looked like we wouldn't know about better...?
Anyway, we drove almost an hour home with our order. We got two cocktails while we were waiting, and the bill was around $150...
First bite of the salmon (sake) sashimi... It was smoked. We placed several orders for sashimi and nigiri sake, and every single piece was basically lox. I'm not sure if they were *trying* to get rid of it, or if they didn't have actual sake at that point in the evening, and thought we just wouldn't know any better...? I have no idea.
Looking at the menu, I see that smoked salmon actually costs more than raw, which makes zero sense to me, as it will keep longer when it's cured and it's not uncommon for sushi places to do this if they feel their fish isn't quite "fresh" enough for sushi, but it's not spoiled.
One roll we got had some actual salmon sake in it, and it was fairly decent. The other rolls were surprisingly disappointing... The fish just wasn't fresh tasting at all. I was hoping that because rolls are just... Often junky... Using fillers, covered up with sauces, etc... That the sashimi and nigiri would redeem the rest, but when it was all smoked... Ugh. We paid SO much money and it seemed they were trying to pawn off their end-of-day trash on us.
Did they really think we'd not notice cured salmon??
Including pics for proof. Clearly you can even *see* that it's been cured. Every single piece.
Absolutely inexcusable.
I'm thinking their high ratings and awards are old and they just are relying on those to get by and are now going downhill and cutting corners, thinking people won't notice.
Gross and infuriating.
This was the most tasteless sushi I have ever eaten. It was so bad I didn't even finish it. Just super bland, no flavor.
Haven't been here in years. Sushi is as good as I remember it
Excellent sushi. We were surprised by the quality honestly only because our expectations in this area have been average at best. This was a delight!!!
One of the best sushi restaurants in the area. Been around forever and have a fantastic selection of sushi, sashimi, and interesting rolls. Service is non-obtrusive, quick and friendly. Good selection of non-sushi dishes as well. I'd definitely recommend for a nice quiet dinner out.
Great service. Wonderful server named Ben. Great drink recommendation. Nice music and ambiance. Amazing food. We will be back.
I don't fully understand all of the high reviews. The sushi is subpar at best. Ordered chef special roll. $5 more than the online menu price. And it just wasn't good. Had a very metallic aftertaste especialy the spicy tuna. The Philly roll is made with fresh not smoked salmon. Just overall not a great experience. I wouldn't get sushi from here again.
We've gone to Yamazato consistently for the past 5 years for all our special occasions / date nights, and I can't believe I haven't written a 5 star review sooner! The sushi is AMAZING. The specialty chef's rolls are so unique and tasty. We always save up our appetite and go all out whenever we come here. The owner Steve is very nice and accommodating, and the restaurant has a very clean modern vibe. Can't recommend this place enough!!
Absolutely delicious. No complaints. Real Japanese Food.
Sushi and nigiri tasted like pre-packed grocery food. Fish certainly not fresh of the day! On our way driving home we already started to have stomach upset. Will not return and will not recommend.
From five to two stars. One of our maki was off and we let the waiter know. Next thing we know the manger came to our table not to apologize but to argue that it was not off. If we will go there again... Maybe, but for sure I will check some other places and try to find some place that respect the clients. Sad because it is our first choice for sushi over the years.
The server girl was friendly and polite
Very good sushi. Best in the area
I have been coming to this restaurant for 10 years and they always provide great food with wonderful service. The atmosphere is peaceful and food is prompt.
There's a reason this place was voted the #1 sushi in DC. Surprisingly tender and succulent cuts of meat with an unexpected and delicious selection of Thai staples.
Very attentive waitstaff, purposefully sparse seating, and worthwhile pricing.
Excellent and amazing Sushi here, plus a menu full of other Japanese, Thai and Korean dishes. This place was recommended by a work college and he was spot on. Perfect fish to rice proportion, super fresh fish and I just learned how great Abalone is. Usually Unagi is my favorites. You will not be disappointed.
The food was pretty good and the experience but the manager (the woman) kind of ruined it all. I ordered their spicy salmon roll and when I ate one, I realized they used a spicy mayo (which wasn’t listed on the menu) so I didn’t like it. I told my server and she said she’s go talk to the manager about it to see what she says. I think nothing of it, order more food and enjoy my meal. When the check was dropped, I noticed the spicy salmon rolls were still on there. When i mentioned it to my server she said her manager said I had it on my table for so long and she wasn’t going to take it off. I asked to speak with the manager. She comes over and tells me that there was nothing wrong with the roll, I just didn’t like it and that’s why she didn’t take it off. This was an odd response bc typically me not liking something is a valid reason to send it back and get it taken off the bill. I typically order spicy salmon rolls so it’s not like I ordered something I never had before. The manager was super condescending and we went back and forth about this until I she agreed to take it off the check. She stormed off and when my server came back she said I was “lucky” because the manager usually never does that. So while everything else I had was great (hamachi nigiri, spicy bulgogi, duck wontons and a glass of pinot gris) I don’t think I’ll be returning. There’s better sushi spots around.
We love this place - busy, but intimate and the sushi is art. The owners clearly take pride in this place and we will keep coming back!
Really outstanding food. Innovative sushi roll combinations and great flavors. The cooks here know what they're doing. The owner and serving staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and personable.
I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. I ordered both sushi and sashimi and felt that the fish was not fresh and cause me and my girlfriend stomachs to be upset for the rest of the night. On top of that their service wasn’t the best.
Service: I called months ago to tell the owner that they had a thief working the Mon-Wed night shift as a driver. Don Gladden also works other jobs including as a handyman. In that capacity, he stole cash of $500, and another $500 in electrical equipment. I will never go back to this restaurant that I have patronized for over two decades. Get rid of someone who is a thief, you are endangering your patrons by not taking this complaint seriously.
Food was good and cheap
I have not once had a bad experience here going for 9+ years now since I was in middle school. The owner and the staff are all a pleasure to be around. not to mention I haven't found a single spot in DC/Nova with better sushi or more variety. Don't think twice about going !
The food is great. We've been there a few times and tried varied items from teriyaki, tempura, salads, soups, to different rolls.... everyone loved the food they ordered...everything was very delicious. The servers are very nice and helpful. You'll love this place.
The owner of this restaurant is extremely rude and disrespectful, but the sushi is good. That is why I will continue to go back.
One of the better sushi places along the i395 corridor. Large selection and I enjoy the selection of chef maki rolls.
Great food
Top notch sushi AND service. Their whole range of sushi —from a simple maki roll, to their special rolls— is fresh, with high quality ingredients, and perfectly prepared sushi rice. Easily some of the best quality sushi in Northern VA. Their Thai food is hits the spot as well. I would say their specialty is sushi, and you won’t be underwhelmed by their Thai food. Service is stellar, for pickup or takeout. Highly recommend for a local, 5 star, urban quality sushi bar with fairly authentic Thai options for your friends who don’t love raw fish :)
Just delicious every time. No other sushi place I go to.
The worst service I ever had !!!
I ordered home and they mistaken my order when I called they hung up on me !!! After saying they have nothing to do!!! Without even hearing my answer!!
I asked to talk with the manager and they say he is not there and hung up on me again!!
I Never felt so disappointed and disrespectful In my life!
Great sushi, well worth the price.
Lives up to the reputation. When you come here you will undoubtedly meet the mastermind owner... Super cool guy with a fabulous team.
Excellent sushi and excellent service. This place is our go to sushi spot in the area. The fish is always fresh and the selection of alternatives for those who are less into sushi is great. Their Sake selection is also really interesting for an inexperienced sake drinker
We drive 30 minutes out of our way just for this place! Awesome sushi selection, really nice staff and so clean!
I never got to eat at this place because one of the waitresses came to give us water and her smell was foul. The place looked really nice and the menu looked good but that was a deterant. The smell lingered for atleast a good 5+min while we decided whether to go or stay. I don't want to make fun of the situation because you never know someone's circumstance, but I really think management needs to check employees hygiene. I am 100% sure we are not the only ones who could smell her and it did not sit well with me to not say anything after my brief visit.
I was captivated with the flavors and wined up going to Yamazato more than l really should...enjoy if ever you visit...
Best sushi in the DMV.
Best I've ever had. Fresh and delicious
I love coming here, definitely my go to sushi spot
I've been coming here for years. Best Sushi in the area hands down. Absolutely delicious. They have amazing toro, and the classic rolls are flawless. Never disappoint!
Yamazato should be ashamed of their service and behavior.
My fiancé and I ordered delivery tonight and specifically asked for our sushi rolls to be packaged in separate containers because one of us has a shellfish allergy. When the food arrived, it all came in the same container and had been mixed together making it a risk to consume. We called the manager to explain what had happened, only for him to yell at us and be extremely rude over the phone. No offer to refund, no offer to send the order again.. Overall horrible service. We were not expecting such a harsh response from the manager over such a simple mishap, but due to their rude response and lack of consideration for their customers, we will not order from Yamazato again.
Loved it! This is our new favorite local sushi restaurant. We ordered tuna and shrimp nigiri and three chef's special rolls: the Potomac, Kamikaze, and one with mango whose name I forget. We got tempura ice cream and coconut ice cream with fried banana for dessert. Absolutely delicious and excellent service.
All of the rolls are really good and balancing it was all amazing 😆😗😍
The food was ok. Sushi was fresh, but not the best quality fish. Drunken noodle had good flavor, but the quality of the ingredient was not good.
No question, the food is fantastic however they have started to out price themselves compared to the other Asian Fusion/Sushi places in the area.
Hidden gem. Always went to old Towne etc. Super close and spacious
Great
Great, welcoming service. Food was fresh and very delicious. I will visit again.
Damn good sushi. Had the edamame, miso soup, lasagna roll, black hole and another that I'm blanking on the name. Will be going back if I'm in the area.
Hands down my favorite spot for sushi! The most extensive and delicious special rolls menu around. When I can pull myself away from just eating sushi I am always reminded that the entrees are just as amazing. They've had to raise their prices since covid, but it is still well worth it for the quality of food. Everyone I know who has tried Yamazato once has gotten just as hooked as I am :)
Posted hours as of 9 September 2021 are 5pm to 10pm for dinner. Kitchen apparently closes at 940pm.
Amazing tasting sushi and noodles
Slow service take out order took more than a hour to make
Tasty food and really friendly folks! They helped me with an app order issue (not the restaurant's fault) and got me out the door with a delicious dinner. Thanks so much for a great meal, can't wait to come back!
I always judge an American sushi restaurant by its chirashi, and Yamazoto's was excellent. The cuts of fish were perfect, the portioning was excellent without being ridiculous, and the presentation was well done. There was just enough variety to keep me rotating, and I think I've found a new favorite in escolar. In moderation. The yellowtail is still my longtime favorite, and theirs was decadent. I was surprised that there weren't as many people as I would have expected on a Saturday, so I'll definitely be going back for my sushi needs moving forward when I'm in the area.
Fantastic
Hands down the best Sushi in the DMV! Just go in and try it. Eagle roll and Eskimo Shrimp are my two personal favorites!
Delicious and generous portions of sushi. Menu also features a large selection of cooked entrees. Calm, clean, and cozy atmosphere. Service can be a bit slow, but very polite and hospitable.
Overpriced and not worth I've been to cheaper sushi places that do a better job and have a higher quality of fish.
Great sushi with lots of choices. Drinks and service were all on point.
I called to place an order during lunch.
On the lunch menu, they have a sushi roll box that's $13, comes with a miso soup and a house salad - the options for the rolls are california, salmon, tuna, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, or alaskan.
I wanted a cucumber avocado roll. Just didn't want to eat the meat.
I tried to order a sushi roll box, but with cucumber avocado rolls instead. The employee was adamant that getting a sushi roll box with just cucumber avocado rolls was not an option. she said that i would have to pay for everything individually. these were the prices quoted to me:
-a cucumber roll is $5, but add $2 for avocado. ($7 x 2 = $14)
-a miso soup ($3)
-a house salad ($7.5)
.... for a total of $24.5, compared to $13. i think i would've been okay maybe pay two or three dollars more for the exlusion, but almost double? no thank you.
the lady told me it would've been more beneficial to get a roll box, and i responded that i didn't want the meat - to which she chuckled.
there's nothing on their menu about substitutions or exclusions for this particular item.
the whole exchange seems beyond unreasonable given that a california roll contains both cucumber and avocado - all i wanted was a california roll with no crab and no fish eggs.
two stars because i have had the food here before and it is solid and their location is pretty good if you want quick sushi! three stars off because the whole interaction felt unreasonable.
Sushi are yummy, but the udon is normal.
Their food is easily the best sushi in like a day's drive. I come up from Quantico, and it's worth the pain of the traffic. DELICIOUS!
Awesome sushi
The challenges.
Always Tasty Sushi & Good Service
Loved it BUT!
I was a virgin in the restaurant.
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
AMAZING! The greater was a bit serious but tried to make jokes. So I really appreciated his failed efforts because he understands customers!
Our Server was in the top 5 of servers I have ever had. She should teach how to provide outstanding customer service and care.
She was extremely knowledgeable, personable and caring. Made us feel welcomed and the feeling that she appreciated our business. In addition, she is just great.
MENU:
I tend to critize restaurants with large or having very different cultural foods because you tend to fall in the realm of master of none...
But this restaurant, at least regarding my dish has changed a bit my mind. ONLY THIS RESTAURANT!
FOOD:
Teriyaki Steak. I know you shouldn't eat well done steak, but I am hesitant to eat meat undercooked at a restaurant that I visit for first time.
Taste almost perfectly balanced. A tad on the sweet side.
The asparagus was missing something. It had a deep earthy taste. Not well balanced.
The miso soup simple but one of the best I've had.
Salad was fresh and the dressing "ooh la la".
That's what I like, simple but greatness within.
Sushi
Great BUT....Sadly a but.. If there is a sushi dish that is dangerous the server should ensure to advise about the issue. When my partner was eating one of the sushi, she got a lot of tiny bones (see pictures). When I asked the server about this she gave a reasonable explanation, it's impossible to get all the bones out of eel.
Well, if you the restaurant know about this potentially life threatening hazard you run the risk of potential legal actions.
SUMMARY:
The potential hazard, the asparagus and the teriyaki being a bit on the sweet side is the reason for not 5 stars.
RETURN FACTOR
100% WITH CAUTIONS. Ask the server which sushi dishes are potentially hazardous by containing bones.
RECOMMEND FACTOR
100% With same cautions to anyone the restaurant is recommended to.
