Hideaway Thai joint housed in a Victorian home features traditional cuisine & a romantic ambiance.
Cozy, unusual, quirky dining experience. We got there early at 5:40 pm and were the first to be sat and served when they open at 6. All food was fantastic, fresh, and flavorful. We tried every entree on the menu and each one was better then the next. We loved the fried rice, crispy tofu app, and spring rolls. Don’t go here if you’re looking for a quick dining experience, there’s only 1 cook in the kitchen!! Great evening.
The food here is soo delicious! Easily the bed pad Thai I’ve ever had. The tofu appetizer is really great with an amazing peanut sauce. The couple that runs it are awesome! Make sure to get here early as they are first come first serve and hours are limited. Well worth the wait!
Belmont is home to some wonderful traditions - the little yellow shop at SE 20th that deals in car batteries, the amazing Movie Madness, and, if you can find it behind the vines, Khun Pic's. The food and the experience are well worth the search and the leisurely pace that makes dining here an experience.
I was not able to confirm this, but I firmly believe that my sources were reliable when I heard that the chef at Khun Pic's and the chef at Lemongrass are sisters, and that their parents ran Bangkok Kitchen that used to be at 25th and Belmont. Whether this is true or not, Lemongrass and Khun Pic's have a lot in common - located in old houses, basically 2 person operations, and phenomenal food.
We recently made our first Covid era visit, and the menu seemed somewhat pared down from what I recall, but there was no trouble finding more tempting things listed than we could have possibly eaten. The fried tofu with peanut sauce was a highlight - if I could reliably know that tofu would be prepared this well, I'd order it more often.
The patio here is one of the nicest outdoor dining spaces I've ever been to.
Pro tip - the chef at Khun Pic's has been known to decide to shut down early, so arriving early boosts your chances for getting fed on a given evening. Don't expect fast food, but do expect excellent food.
Delicious Thai food, lovely and charming atmosphere. Do plan to spend some time here as there are only two people working...the cook and the server. We had the catfish with vegetables and also a vegetable stir fry with chicken, both delicious. And the best Pad Thai I have ever eaten. The service was charming, the atmosphere very unique, quaint, with different tablecloths and china on each table. Fireplace was so cozy in January. It’s cash or check only, no credit cards accepted. If you’re in a hurry, pick somewhere else to eat. But if you plan to make a night of it, you will enjoy.
Fantastic place. A true jewel among restaurants. This is the type of underground location that people like to hunt for - a house-turned-restaurant hidden by foliage from the front, run by only two people, a couple, for almost 20 years. Kuhn Pic's is a comfortable place with delicious food. BE PREPARED TO WAIT! This is a sit-for-two-hours type of place, especially if it gets busy. But don't let that deter you. It's very worth the wait.
If you're looking for an unforgettable Thai dining experience, look no further than this Portland gem. From the moment you step inside, you'll be transported to Thailand with the authentic decor and warm atmosphere.
But it's the food that truly sets this restaurant apart. Every dish is bursting with flavor, with a perfect balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy notes that will have your taste buds dancing. This matches if not surpasses places in Thailand.
Fried tofu: 10/0
Pad Thai: 9.5/10
Thai fried rice: 10/10
Cat fish: 10/10
Green curry: 9.5/10
Papaya salad: 9/10
Salad roll: 7.5/10 (but I’m allergic to peanuts and couldn’t eat the peanut sauce, which everyone in our group said is the best peanut sauce they’ve ever had)
The restaurant is over 25 years old, and is run completely by a lovely couple. They can only serve a certain amount of people per evening so be sure to plan ahead and come early.
Overall, if you're looking for an authentic and unforgettable Thai dining experience, this restaurant is not to be missed.
I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful this place is. It is now one of my top three recommendations for places to dine in portland. The home is absolutely Stellar as well as the food. The wait for food does take just a little bit because there's only one person running the show but it's worth every single minute! I would say it's probably the best Thai food in the greater Portland area. Make sure you have a cash or check on hand because they only take cash or check!
Mary & Jon were incredible and the food was absolutely delicious. I can’t wait to come back.
Food here was good but I'm pretty sure it's just a tax scam at this point in their career. They are only open 9 hour a week in a million dollar house and both times we went the husband was actively trying to discourage people from coming in, even when there are only 2 tables full inside. Clearly the business is a write off for their property. They are very conservative politically so par for the course.

This just might be the best pad thai I've ever had.
So good! The vibes are amazing
This is the best Thai food experience I’ve had. The garden is magical; the couple that owns the restaurant are hospitable and provide amazing, kind service and that green curry was *out of this world* good. They’re excellent at what they do. 10/10 recommend!! Get there at 6!!
This restaurant has the most fresh and tasty food BUT it's not your regular Thai restaurant and you need to set your expectations accordingly. This is NOT the restaurant for parties larger than two - in my opinion. It's a husband and wife team - she's cooking fresh, to order and he's the wait staff. You should only order what you can eat and he's advised us before to this extent. It's in a secluded, romantic, Victorian with vintage plates and so forth. Super charming! I feel sad reading the reviews of all the people frustrated with the timing - maybe the couple should consider talking reservations that are staggered to match timing? I say #worththewait. Her sister also has a restaurant with delicious food.
Absolutely the best Thai food I’ve ever had! Easily the best in Portland!

Khun Pic is a fantastic Thai restaurant that serves up delicious pad Thai. The restaurant is located in a convenient location and has a cozy atmosphere with friendly and attentive staff.
The pad Thai is definitely a standout dish at Khun Pic, with perfectly cooked noodles that are lightly coated in a flavorful sauce and topped with crunchy peanuts, fresh bean sprouts, and a lime wedge for a burst of citrusy flavor. The dish is well balanced and not too sweet or too spicy, making it a great option for both those who love Thai food and those who are trying it for the first time.
In addition to the pad Thai, Khun Pic has a diverse menu that includes other traditional Thai dishes such as curries, stir-fries, and soups, as well as vegetarian and vegan options. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable, making Khun Pic a great option for a casual meal out with friends or family.
Overall, I highly recommend Khun Pic for anyone looking for delicious Thai food in a welcoming and cozy setting.
Phad Thai was 11/10 everything else was also amazing. Best Thai food I’ve ever had.
Best Thai food in American! Can’t get anything like it. The owners are amazing and always a great time. You should definitely go if visiting Portland
We were driving through town, the other spots were all closed... which was lucky, because we ended up eating here! We had the chicken Kai Khan, and WOW!! THE FOOD WAS GREAT!!! So if you're looking for a spot THIS IS IT!
Amazing food and fantastic people!! Would highly recommend!!

Phenomenal Thai food with bright flavors
Gorgeous outdoor seating! It's like you are hidden away from the world for a bit. John was such a gracious host and his wife...the best cook! The food was absolutely amazing!! Definitely a place we will return to 😊
Absolutely wonderful experience and even better food. This is a unique place like I’ve never seen in Portland, it feels like a gateway from the city into a magical culinary experience. IF YOU TRY IT YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!
Best Pad Thai I've ever had. Absolutely wonderful food!
Best Thai food outside of Thailand.
The best Thai in PDX, hands down.
Hands down the best thai food in portland. Great atmosphere and epic portions. Truly inspiring that the place is run by TWO people!
This place is the real deal when it comes to Thai food. The menu isn’t very big but everything they do serve, they do it the best. I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to try it! Honestly, the BEST pad kee mao I’ve ever had. The fried tofu was perfectly spiced and fried lightly, I don’t usually like tofu by itself but I salivate thinking about how amazing they were. The peanut sauce served on the side tasted authentic and amazing. The papaya salad was so fresh and crisp. You can tell the wife and husband who own and operate this lovely place put their heart into the food, you can really taste the love they put into it. I will definitely be returning!
By far the best Thai I’ve had in Portland ❤️
Best Pad Thai we've ever had. The Catfish was spectacular. Delicious thai iced tea. Everything. Was. Perfect.
First off, the family here is so welcoming. I've come about 3-4 times during the pandemic, and have talked to both of em. Khun is ball of light and so is her husband.
Second. The food has been bomb everytime. I've tried everything and like the drunken noodle the most I think. It's between that and the pad thai. Def the most memorable pad thai I've had. I also LOVE that they give you enough food to last at least 2 days, easily 3.
The catfish is an extraordinary dish. I'm vegan, but I have tried the sauce that they give you with it and it's so delicious. I would recommend everything on the menu!
My mom did have one hang up with them when she made an alteration, asking for more egg in her rice. She had expected it to be scrambled or hard boiled and tossed in I think. Rather, the way Khun cooks it was with the rice as a whole. My mom had found this iteration really watery and didn't like it. Other than that my family has loved the food every time.
I will be back soon.

Absolutely delicious food. 1.5h wait for food after ordering. About 30m between visits (trying to order another beer, trying to get the check, etc). End to end experience was 2h.
Had a night kid-free so we spontaneously stopped in. So glad we did. The salad rolls with apple slices were genius, the special dipping sauce was warm and comforting.
We shared a green curry, for a little extra they add extra veggies so it easily feeds two people, with leftovers. The fresh veggies were perfectly cooked, not mushy. The chicken was tender and flavorful, like it was marinated prior to being added.
The menu is small but I’m pretty sure that’s because the food is cooked for you personally by the wife, while the husband waits the tables. It’s a unique experience and feels really special. You’re in this beautiful old Victorian, surrounded by pictures of family (clearly very proud parents with accomplished children) and gorgeous paintings (again, compliments of the chef) and it’s a warm, cozy, intimate space.
So happy we found them, we have to go again. Added to favorites!
An amazing hidden gem
Two of the most lovely people I have had the luck to meet. They are both incredible people. The food is phenomenal and the atmosphere is perfect for a slow meal with good company. Don't come here expecting instant gratification like some reviewers on here seem to expect; instead, come with the idea that you're amongst family and you won't be disappointed.
Mary and John are both wonderful and they've run this place solo for years and years. It's an incredible mom and pop experience. My favorite place in Portland.
Plus, the outside garden is spectacular and very unique.
Get takeout from there all the time. Full meal for $20-$30 really good place
Good food friendly staff long wait but at the table
My favorite Thai restaurant, hands down the best in Portland! The ambience is perfect, bring your conversation because the wait will be long but well worth it !
Such a weird restaurant, but if you want something unique and delicious this is it. Took an extremely long time to get our food but we didn't mind. Run by a husband and wife and they seemed very frazzled, but we're friendly. We had the tofu dip, Pad Thai, and prawn curry. The only thing I wouldn't get again is the Pad Thai but the other dishes were absolutely exceptional. Made for a great date night.
If youre a foodie, this is a MUST! even with directions, it was very difficult to find. Come with plenty if tine and patience but an empty stomach and appetite for heavenly Thai dishes.
This is hands down the best Thai restaurant in all of Portland. You will not find fresher ingredients and more authentic Thai food. Mary cooks for you as if you’re a guest in her home, she has an incredible story and cares so much about serving you the best tasting Thai food. If anyone wants to debate what could be a better Thai restaurant in Portland, let me know.

Phenomenal two person operation. Small capacity but with the wait. Cash only.
Portland has no shortage of Thai food, but this is, by far, the best Thai food I have ever had! When you walk in, you feel like you are in a family living room. I went with my in-laws, who have known the family that runs this restaurant for a decade. The owners are incredibly kind, hospitable, and generous.
I can’t speak highly enough about the food. The green curry was incredibly rich and fresh, and the fried catfish was the stuff of my dreams!
Most delicious and freshest Thai food
Since we never got to eat any food here, I can't give a rating of the food, but I can of the experience. When we arrived, we found a sign asking us to wait to be seated, but no sign of service. We stood there a few minutes, and then remembered they are a cash only restaurant. So I left on foot to the closest ATM, five blocks away. When I returned several minutes later, I found my spouse still standing at the door. She had just, two minutes before, spoken with a staff person, who had initially ignored her, coming out briefly, taking on his cell phone, going back into the kitchen, and on his second trip out spoke to her only after she approached him. He said that while he could seat us, it would be at least an hour before we would be served, as they only had one cook, and there were two parties of four people, plus a few parties of two already seated and waiting. As she looked around, she noticed that none of the patrons had any food, even though they had been open for over an hour and a half. Before she got the attention of the wait staff, she had also noticed that the patrons, while chatting quietly, seemed a bit nonplussed about the situation. One patron got her attention and told her that it is always like this, but the food is worth it. Maybe it is, or maybe it's cognitive dissonance, we will never know.
Perhaps the most disappointing thing was that there was no effort of the part of the wait staff to explain other than to say they only have one cook, and no apology was offered.
It was pretty empty, so there was no long wait like others spoke of. It is a very unique and relaxing place with good food.
Portlandia impersonating a restaurant!
Quaint place, great service, best appetizer, wine, and thai ever!
Amazing food, intimate location. No card services so bring cash. (Atm just across the street in the market). You won't regret it!
Waited 2 1/2 hours for dinner. Food was fine but not worth the hassle, which was extreme. There are plenty of equally good Thai places that function properly. Place was too loud to hear conversation easily even though only half filled.
Hands down the best Thai food in Portland. The tofu dip appetizer is so good my husband and I each get our own order so we don't have to share. Fresh vegetables, always perfectly cooked. Go when you have lots of time, because service can be very slow as there's only one woman doing all the cooking. But if you plan for that, it's a great place for a long chat with friends and excellent food.
Well, if you wanna wait almost 3 hours to have dinner, this is your place. We got there at 6:40 and we could only have the salad, which came 2 hours later, when the main dish came, by 9:15, we asked for the check and a box. So frustrating. Never back.
Queen Anne house with a handful of tables, outstanding Thai home cooking, and a slow food vibe. Jon & Mary are the only two employees and the couple have been running this little gem for 20 years now!
The food is excellent. It is run entirely by two people so don't complain about waiting or try to be rude to the staff since they are the owner's and are working their butts off to feed you the best Thai food in Portland. They won't hesitate to just ask you to leave if you are rude. Their Tom Kha soup is wonderful, although I find that the vegie version of the soup is better and I am a big meet eater. It just tastes better without any meat. The peanut sauce that comes with the salad roles are excellent. I love the in-home atmosphere with different china sets for each table. An excellent place to take someone where you want time to talk and catch up. This is slow food, not fast take out, so relax, enjoy and enjoy the cuisine.
Go with the expectation of a long wait, but this is hands down the best Thai food ever.
Very very good Thai food. Absolutely packed full of vegetables: eggplant, asparagus, cauliflower, delicata squash(!!), plus the usual broccoli, bamboo shoots, etc. Set in an eclectic victorian home with limited hours and cash only; a perfect stop for an adventurous and quintessential Portland dining experience. Would love to see a couple local Oregon wines added to the limited wine list. Quirky, delicious.
The best tom kah soup I've ever had. The waiter Jon was extremely cordial and certainly proud of the food he brought to the table. The place has an atmosphere that made the food taste even better, even though I don't think that is possible. They appreciate flavors and spices like no where else I've ever been in Portland. True Asian cuisine.
Go right when it opens, prepare to wait, enjoy the kooky server, and enjoy the best food of your life. My wife and I have been going here for 6 years and still dream about the green curry.
My absolute favorite Thai food restaurant--John and Mary are wonderful! The food is incredible.
Really bad experience. Had to wait at the table for 45 mins and still didn't get a glass of water, forget food. Really limited choice of food. Undoubtedly one of my worst dining experience due to the poor service!!! There is no option for 0 stars!!!
This place is pretty cute. It has a nice outdoor patio, if you're coming on a nice day. I must say that it is extremely difficult to get a table here. We've been turned away about five times. The only time we were able to get a spot, we showed up when they opened and I believe we were the last people they let in that night. If you're considering coming here but can't make it until 20 minutes after they open, forget about it. There are two people working, which is sweet and cool, and they're super friendly people. That being said, it took about 2.5 hours to receive our food after we ordered. I do recommend you order an appetizer because we saw other people's appetizer's coming out an hour or so before entrees. We were pretty starving by the time our food came out. Portions are normal, the prices are higher than other Thai restaurants, and we found the food comparable. It was a nice experience overall, but we won't be back.
This is hands down the best Thai food I've ever had. It's a tiny mom and pop place, literally, and the food and service is exceptional to match. Try the Catfish, you will not be disappointed.
Best Thai in the city. Cash only.
You have to go here!!!! Such a lovely atmosphere, caring staff, and quality food. Best pad Thai and springs rolls I have ever had. The chicken just melted in my mouth. I cannot recommend this place enough!
Fantastic restaurant. The vibe is very good. Nice place and decor and best part has to be the food and the hospitality by John and Mary. John is amazing and cares a lot for making your experience worthwhile. Food is awesome and has good options for vegetarian eateres.
POSITIVELY THE BEST GOURMET THAI FOOD ANYWHERE. Ate like royalty at Khun Pic’s Bahn Thai Restaurant, 3429 SE Belmont St, Portland, OR 97214. Leisurely. Casual. Mary and John are perfect hosts.
Best thai food in Portland without a doubt! Great atmosphere. Definitely a nice spot for a date!
The place is incredible. A true gem of a restaurant. You'll second guess yourself walking through the front door and wonder whether or not it's actually somebody's house you're waltzing into. As commonly stated in other reviews, the wait for food is a little lengthy, but waiting in this mellow, aesthetically pleasing, non-bustling restaurant is an experience in itself. Go, relax, enjoy the ambiance, develop theories on the owners, and eat some seriously scrumptious Thai.
Food is awesome when you get it but be prepared for an awkwardly long wait. Server is not exactly welcoming. Patio is charming. Wish they did take out.
Hands down the best Thai food in PDX, if not the Northwest...
It's hidden behind some trees and I waited over an hour for my food, but it's definitely worth it. It's the freshest and most flavorful Thai food you'll find in town and the space is charming, casual, and very homey. It's a husband/wife team and from what I can tell the wife is pretty temperamental. Shortly after I came in they had to start turning away customers - the husband said his wife was starting to throw a fuss in the kitchen. But as long as the food stays this good she can keep throwing fusses. Just make sure you get here early - you'll be waiting a while.
Hands down the best Thai in Portland, more than worth the trouble to find and get in.
They make it about as hard as possible for you to give them your money, but the food is amazing.
Very authentic Thai food in a tucked away garden on busy Belmont. Big fan of this place, though seating can be hard to come by.
Took my thesis advisor and his wife there. Never had a better Thai meal, and we've all eaten many places. Plus the owners are fantastic. Shared a passion for Portland building history and preservation. Nice to have a meal that is quiet, amazing, and homey.
I really like their food. Amazing green curry. I don't want to offend anyone but I'm curious--does anyone happen to know if Khun Pic uses MSG?
