Thai Street Food
Service was over the top old Portland. It's the kind of service that makes you feel obligated to come back.
The environment was fun and inviting
The food was ok... Both platters had a lot of sauce and were very sweet.
I ordered spicy and it was not too spicy allowing the other flavors to come through
Over all it was a very cool "Portland" kinda place to eat
I visited Khao San Thai Restaurant twice with friends and family, and it was a fantastic experience both times. The food was fresh and delicious, the portions were perfectly sized, and the service was excellent. The cozy atmosphere added to the charm, and the waiter had a great sense of humor—he even snapped a picture of himself when I asked him to take one of our group! I’m definitely looking forward to coming back for a third visit.
Went for lunch on a Saturday. Was hungry, driving by, and saw this place right on the corner with it's big windows and healthy plants. There was a parking spot right open in front.
I smiled as soon as I walked in! I was greeted warmly, made to feel very welcome and at home.
The menu is easy to read, colorful and filled with just the right amount of offerings. My eyes immediately landed on a ribeye dish called Crying Tiger.
It comes with a beautiful green salad and a tamarind dipping sauce that is a fully amazing experience with the steak. It's the most expensive dish on the menu and I'm stoked I chose it.
Staff is joyful and quick to notice if someone needs something, but they otherwise leave you in peace to enjoy your meal.
An absolute pleasure of an experience! I'm so glad I randomly visited. Added to favorites and plan to return.

This was my final stop in Portland and it was the perfect meal to end my day. Jesse went above and beyond to make sure my experience here was incredible. Khao San has a very special person with him and all his interactions with everyone created such an welcoming and joyful atmosphere. Can’t wait to dine here once again when I return back to Portland.
This place is an absolute gem of a spot here in Portland. The owner of the place is beyond social and a delight to have on the floor. The energy in this place really shines through and captivates an authentic Thailand feel.
NOW WHEN IT COMES TO THE FOOD!!!
GOD DAMMMMMMNNNN!!!!
This place hands down has some of the most unique Thai food I’ve had in the states. Not a god damn dish in this place hits without slapping you in the face with crazy flavors!!!”
The most balanced Papaya salad!
Juiciest Pad Thai.
Tender Rib eye.
Crazy cocktails
Hands down my favorite new Thai spot in town.

Katie the bartender is wonderful! Friendly and fast service. Thanks Katie!
Great Thai food
Best Thai food experience I’ve had in the city. Much closer to actually being at a restaurant in Thailand than I thought. Katie was amazing! She made the night a 16/10. Katie made regulars out of us.

The papaya salad was not very flavorful. The portions are bigger when you eat there. Avoid take out.
I love this place, shout out to Jesse! Top quality dude!
I went in for dinner last night. The food was great and the service was even better. Katie was on top of everything! I will be back!
This is the real thing. Excellent Thai did, and get the sweet potato fries, better than any you've ever had. Super friendly service and really cheerful atmosphere. You won't even notice the rain. Happy hour every day from 3 to 6.
I have driven past this place 1000 times but never been inside. The atmosphere is cozy and the food delicious. Highly recommend a visit!

If you’re going to serve Thai food you better include the rice for free.
Very nice place, the waiter is great. Very helpful. Serving time was very fast, potion is good
Family owned where you feel like family. The food is made fresh and your taste buds will savor every bite. Hospitality is genuine and your beverages at the bar are served with expertise and authentic customer service. This is a Hidden Gem you will not forget. Sanctuary and Exquisite.
Food is always awesome when we come here. Service though, nonchalant and unaware. normally when we come in it's very friendly and inviting.
Great food, and drinks! Staff helped me pick the best drink.

S-p-e-c-t-a-c-u-l-a-r!! Food is simply incredible (anything, really), atmosphere and the people that work is so amazing and friendly!!
The homies ! Such a great spot. Coming from grand junction Colorado, these boys know how to treat ya. They are the spot of Portland. See ya soon!
They only allowed 5 stars. Would rate higher if I was able to.
Where do I start. This place is fabulous. As soon as you walk in the front door you’re greeted by either this lovely short jolly fellow named Jesse or either Taylor who you’re not quite sure if they’re flirting with you or being professional and or the owner Preza (idk the spelling) who runs a very energetic laid back fun establishments.
The food was absolutely amazing. I had the bbq chicken and some curry soup that I will never not get. This place is so good I don’t know if I can ever eat at another Thai restaurant in Portland as long as this one exists.
Great food, amazing service!
Yesterday was my first visit. Jessie immediately made me feel welcome and was happy to answer questions. I ordered the pumpkin curry, pad thai, and a house cocktail. The food came out very quickly, and everything was delicious. I'll be back soon.
I’ve been to Thailand. It’s difficult to find a spot in the US that truly satisfies the taste of Thailand and this location can do it! My favorite Thai food in all of Portland.

Very authentic spot with a happy hour from 2-5 PM. I loved it! The chicken wings were my favorite.
So so good really nice staff amazing food and cool space
Love coming here. This is where I always bring visitors to Portland: great atmosphere, great food, great people. Can’t recommend it enough.
Visited Khao San on the way to “First Thursday”
— Family owned restaurant. Delicious Thai food with lots of variety from grilled meats, rice dishes, stir fries, curries, mango sticky rice, and an extensive drink menu. Great for groups, plenty of seating.

Realmente espectacular comida deliciosa el personal genial personas con buena vibra uno se mis
Jesse and Taylor were exceptional and we really enjoyed the Thai flavors and variety of food, highly recommend the tea as well! Looking forward to coming back again soon!
They are fantastic. The food is always great and the service is impeccable. I appreciate everything y’all do!
I visit every chance I get when I am in Oregon. I’ve been coming for a couple years now and this place never disappoints. It’s seriously so delicious that I cannot believe such good food exists. The service is always great too! I always get the ping, pad se eww, and mango sticky rice. 🔥
Delicious food and Jesse is a great server! Definitely would recommend!! Food is on the spicier side which we loved but be aware.
Delicious, fast, great atmosphere. Our new favorite thai
Our waiter was hilarious and personable. The food was amazing. The decor was great. I can't imagine a bad experience here.
The food is absolutely incredible!!!! Super cute place and service is super kind! Will be back one day :•)
The food here is amazing! However, Taylor, is an incredibly amazing person. He’s the friendliest, most knowledgeable and professional server we’ve encountered here in Portland. This restaurant is all the better with him here. We live an hour away but we will gladly come here for the food but more so, for Taylor.
good experience but not the freshest tasting food
The Khao Soi curry with a little added spice from the spice rack is next level. The service is incredible. Atmosphere is great. Will be back.
The food and atmosphere was amazing in here. The staff was i incredibly friendly and they had a great Cheers vibe ti them and invited everyone in with open arms. I would totally recommend to try this location.
This was our first time here. Great food, great service, clean atmosphere. We will be back!
Update to my review several years ago.
Khao San continues to be a must go to restaurant in Portland. With so many places to eat in Portland sometimes it's easy to not return to some places because want to try new things, but this place is worth returning. Food is consistently good, not always true of many places, the atmosphere fun, and the staff hysterical. Stayed till close last night and as the evening went on it just got better. Definitely worth it (don't stick with Pad Thai, be brave and give something else a try.)
Second visit tonight. Found it by accident after not wanting to wait at a nearby place. Tonight we brought our kids and were early enough to sit in TukTuk. I will say, our first visit was a Saturday night and it was LOUD, difficult to even talk, but still nice. Tonight wasn't loud and everyone was very nice and helpful. Food is good, as authentic as I've had in the US. Prices are reasonable and portions good. Love the variety of options. Definitely a place we will come back and bring friends!
Just go and try everything. This time we had Crying Tiger and Spicy Eggplant and Beef, but we've never had anything less than a amazing here.
Food and ambiance were good but the service was terrible. The first server was nice but got our order wrong at first and we had to wait to wait our food. Which wasn't really a problem at all for me. When the server went on break, no one ever came to check on us at all and we never got our side of brown rice we ordered. I had my toddler with me and when I asked the server for a box and the check to he seemed unwilling to help me at all. He also seemed very stoned. He told me I needed to literally walk two feet to the bar to get my check (which I was trying to chase my child around who was getting fussy and felt like he could have helped me out and got it for me instead not wanting to interact at all.... When I got my bill, they just ran my card and didn't show me the bill itself and then I selected the receipt to be printed option and never received it. And now that I'm sitting here at home, I'm realizing that by the looks of the total, they charged me for a side of brown rice I never got.
So long story short, ambiance was nice, the service needs work here. Hope you guys can make improvements based on my review and do better next time.
Decent place, nice variety of Chinese and Thai options, and mostly speedy service. Large group had 2 dishes get lost, and take a fair amount of time to get delivered. Food was good, but not amazing.
I can't assess what is authentic Thai and what isn't.
But this felt much more authentic than cookie-cutter Thai restaurants.
The food was good! Not mind blowing, not my favorite Thai in Portland. Definitely worth trying if you like Thai food, and are used to the standard Thai restaurants with 90% same menus across the nation.
Separate from the food- our waiter was fun, interactive, but at times ... too open? with his interactions with us.
This place was awesome! Super chill vibes and the food was immaculate. I got the holy basil chicken and it was awesome!
This is a fun spot to check out for Thai food. The decor is cool, including the tuk tuk in the restaurant. The place is spacious, though I bet it gets crowded during peak times. Had the papaya salad... don't ask for spicy if you can't handle a lot of heat! I wasn't expecting something quite so spicy in a papaya salad, but it was good. Also had the coconut fries with their dipping sauce. They were very hearty, though the sauce is runny. It's a decent spot for happy hour food. The Thai iced tea with coconut milk was refreshing, and came with a beautiful orchid flower for garnish. Our server was very friendly and accommodating, even with a loud and large group. I want to go back when I'm hungrier so I can try some of the main dishes. The menu is marked with what is or can be made vegan or vegetarian.
Great tasting food 😋😋😋
This was our first time in and Jesse was the absolute best. Everything was amazing, food, customer service, environment. Definitely will be coming back.
Stopped in while walking by on an excursion. The server was awesome! The food absolutely delicious! Looking forward to going again soon!
Great food and service !
As a started my wife and I shared the Hoy Joy . They have pork, shrimp and crab meat and water chestnut wrapped un bean-curd skin. They are amazing and delicious. We both highly recommend them. We also had some green tea as well. For my meal I had the #63-Holy basil chicken. You have the option to choose your spice levels which for me I went for very spicy. There was a good portion on my end, which I have left over fordinnertonight. My wife went with #51- Chinese Broccoli with pork belly. Needless to say it was so good there were no left overs to be brought home.
We will be back to try the happy hour menu. 😀
Pretty damn good
Bartender is amazing
Wings are the best
Drinks are good!
Would recommend
First of all, the food was fire. But that wasn't even the highlight of our experience. Taylor provided exceptional service despite being the only server/bartender on a Saturday night. He was extremely efficient, offered excellent recommendations, and provided incredible service with a personal touch. This was our second visit to Khao San, and each time we have met incredible staff! Taylor (and your hiring manager) deserves a raise!
Always so tasty and service is so lovely. I’m gf and vegan and can eat almost everything on the menu, really appreciate how dietary need friendly they are!
Loved the spacious interior and delicious flavorful food!
2023, Dec: Went back to try the curry and roti, excellent! Next time will try the pad khee mao.
2023, Nov: Ate on a Sunday afternoon. Food is terrific, especially anything with holy basil. The staff are wonderful and friendly. Will absolutely be coming back to try other dishes. The Pad Char Pla was excellent, fish breaded well and not soggy. The holy basil chicken was flavorful and spiced well. I recommend at least a medium spice level.
Friendly servers. Nice ambiance and great food!!!
Ordered takeout from here and they missed about half of my order. Food is also mediocre
Came in with my 8 mo. 'ol service animal. Handicapped, I was blind 1.5 yrs ago, have a Titanium Femur. The manager was quick, endearing, all smiles and fully accommodating, dog water bowl and all. He got that lil butt movin'. The whole pit stop for other than mexi was primo. muah
Everything in this Restaurant was really like being in Raosan Road.... Witch I love! Thank you for an authentic Thai experience out of Thailand! Jessie you are the best! Fantastic service! We had a blast!I returned the next day for a take out... Again very delicious food, spiced perfectly and just yummie!
The best northern Thai style food in the greater Portland area! I had the fresh summer rolls and #36 Khao Soi with tofu. Amazing, joyful people and even better food. Highly recommend for vegetarians!
Good food but great atmosphere and service make this a five star pick. Great locals place in the Pearl District. Thanks guys!
2023: I'm preparing to leave Portland and Khao San was on my "gotta go before I go" list. Just as good as I remember. Flawless. Fun. Delicious.
📸: Ping (chicken & pork), Pad Prik Pow Crispy Chicken, and Pad Pak
2018: Decor is awesome. I highly recommend you go and try the Coco Potatoes and the Ping Chicken 🤤 and then every entree.
Super friendly staff, fun atmosphere and the food was delicious.
Really good food. Very friendly staff
Great food in a vibrant atmosphere. I recommend the sweet potato coconut fries which come with a delicious peanut sauce. My other favorite is the pad prik pow spicy crispy chicken. Of course the pad thai is great, as well as the crispy pork belly, tom kha soup, wings, hoy joh and pretty much everything else I've ever tried there. The thai iced tea is on point as well.
Visited Portland from BC for a weekend and decided on this place based on the highly rated reviews as we were craving Thai for dinner.
Pros:
- Friendly staff and cool decor that attempts to display many Thai memorabilia
- Waiter let us try the two beers on tap exclusively brewed for the restaurant. The Khao San Ginger ale was a pleasant surprise for someone who usually prefers a strong lager over pale ale! Had a good kick and wasn’t hoppy. (The lager was nothing special)
- Massaman beef short rib curry: meat was tender and curry was flavourful with a nice touch of roasted peanuts.
Cons:
- Roti was too sweet and didn’t have the right bite (too soft). But I guess I shouldn’t have expected the fluffy and authentic kind like Malaysian roti.
- Pad see ew was disappointing. The hoisin sauce was overwhelming and dish was overall salty.
I live a couple blocks away and eat at Khao San all the time. The food is delicious, they have a wide array of options, and the wait staff is awesome (especially Jesse).
This is a cute Thai restaurant with a great atmosphere. The staff are friendly and fun, the staff seem to know everyone by name that come in and the ppl from the neighborhood just stop in to say hi as they are taking their evening walks 😁. The food is so good, and they serve a gluten-free menu, which I appreciate 😋 🙏🏻
My friends and I found dead flies in our food. Lots of better places to get Thai in Portland.
One thing I liked was the decor. I sat in the little cart which was really cute.
I have lived next to Khao San for a year and have gotten take out half a dozen or so times. On the positive side, the staff is always very friendly and the atmosphere is very enjoyable. Unfortunately, my food has always been very subpar. I would recommend Thai Peacock down the street. The food is priced similarly but much tastier.
Absolute gem with fun staff and venue. Pork skewers, ribeye, and massuman curry with short rib and roti - so good!
Service is great. Starters and curry were very delicious. Larb and pad thai left much to be desired.
One of the best culinary experiences during my stay in Portland. I've eaten a lot of Thai food, but this one stole the show with well seasoned, thoughtfully created, tasty food. The staff is incredibly kind, and I especially recommend the sweet potato fries. generous portion size! this restaurant is very gluten-free friendly ( only two dishes have gluten in them ) and the restaurant also offers many dishes that are vegan and vegetarian. there is something for everyone!
I loved the holy basil fried rice!
Holy basil fried rice is bomb. Best fired eggs I’ve had
Delicious, tasty, flavorful food! Must try.
Super friendly staff.
This street food place has a really neat atmosphere and my favorite pad ka prao in Portland.
Edit: Still haven't found a better Holy Basil, aka pad ka prao in Portland. When you take into account the fried egg on top and the fish sauce with chilies, it's simply a perfect dish.
Ordered food via door dash. Arrived quick, though there was a substitution - it should default to no subs. Anyway - food is expensive and bad. Like really bad. Almost no flavor, no spice, very little in the dish except noodles. I wish I could get my money back. Don’t go here.
Big portions on the appetizers. Jesse, our writer's enthusiastic attitude is contiguous, he brought our already upbeat group to the next level. Two thumbs up for that.
Some of the best Thai food I've ever had. Great service and amazing food.
Incredible spot. Every employee provided A++ service/banter, food came out super fast & tasted awesome (order it spicy and it ACTUALLY comes out spicy), and the decor is fun with TVs set up if a game is happening. Beer price is a little high, but all the other positives more than make up for it. Will be back for sure.
Was greeted in a super friendly way right when we got in and the atmosphere was amazing. The food was really good too and I will definitely be coming back for more. I got mine spicy and it was the perfect amount of spice for me.
Great place for lunch!
Amazing drinks, and cool authentic vibe
I was lucky enough to try their crepe cake I got the matcha flavor and was blown away how good it was! The texture and sweetness was perfect. The thai tea was phenomenal as well, not too sweet and you can also taste the flavor of the black tea. Can't wait to go back and try more of the items they offer.
Jessie and Keto are the friendliest staff ever! Their food is delicious and served fast. Decor is fun and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. 10/10 recommend!
Great food, great people, great place!
Loved it!
We ordered delivery and found the food to be OK. One disappointment was the fact that Sum Tum seemed to be sort of Americanized - more like a salad. Other dishes, such as Kor Mu Yang, were fine. We will give this place another try and consider dining in next time.
Fresh and tasty, atmosphere is good and they have food specials.
With a lot of Thai places in close proximity- this is one of the best!
The service can be a little slow sometimes but that is being picky. We go here a fair amount and a few of the male wait staff seem to avoid eye contact which makes getting service a little difficult.
The chefs are excellent!! great ingredients, great cooking. Excellent flavors. I would still recommend this place, many of their dishes are too notch.
I like the pad kee maow, but their curries and specials are great also.
The company brews their own beer and it's alright, theres also bottles. they brew a ginger infused light beer, its pretty strong on the ginger, might be your thing, not mine.
The decoration is clean and interesting - street style.
Best Thai place ever
Amazing service. Quick and good. Host/owner had a ton of energy and was so friendly.
Not only is most of the food on this menu GF friendly, but they have gf soy sauce too! I called ahead to ask if they could put in food for us to dine in so my partner would have time to eat for his lunch break and they had the entire table set up for us when we arrived! The service is warm and friendly, I love genuine banter. We will be coming back, and probably bringing friends! Thank you Kito & Jesse!
I'd been burned too many times with cheapo Thai food but Khoa San's reeling me back in! Heads above the rest
Been here many many times over the last five years. Excellent authentic Thai food in downtown Portland. One of our favorite Thai restaurants in the Portland area.
Only tried appetizers, the spring rolls and coco fries. Both were delicious! And the service was very good and friendly. Can’t wait to go back for dinner!
The guys working are awesome and the catfish is next level. First time here and I can’t wait to come back.
Great Spot! All the staff are fun, Jessie is hilarious. The food is delicious and filling. They don’t skimp out!
Our new go to place for Thai food downtown. I'm kinda boring with my regular order of Pork pad Thai but it's good everytime. Can wait to get back.
Friendliest staff and yummiest food! Order a bunch of plates to share.
This the best Thai food I've ever had in Portland.
The server gave us his recommendations and in the words of uncle Snoop, "he don't miss".
I'm coming back to try all the recommendations.
I got the Chinese broccoli with pork belly. Kind of felt like I spent $16 on just Chinese broccoli. It tasted ok, but next time I'll get some chili oil to go with it.
The guy I picked up from seemed genuinely happy to serve me, and I appreciated the smile!
Even though this particular experience was just ok, I'll be back again because I hear such good things about it from friends and coworkers!
Such a great place with reasonable prices! The staff are awesome, friendly, and energetic. Highly recommend!!!
this place offered the best damn pad thai i’ve ever had, the server/boss got down on one knee to give me my diet coke and called me and my friends queens. it was really great
I loved the staff and the vibe of the place... my food was prepared fast too! however, I did not enjoy the food! I ordered spring rolls and Phad Se Ew, and it just didn't hit the spot. The spring roll taste is supposed to be emphasized by the peanut sauce, but both ended up tasting flat... The Phad Se Ew was not that flavorful even after one the chefs recommended it saying it was one of the most popular things on the menu. I also really didn't like the vegees they cooked the noodles with. So, nah, wouldn't go back!
Friendly great atmosphere! Food was delicious!
This is the most authentic Thai flavor that I've found since being able to visit Bangkok. Everything was excellent, the spare ribs and roti I can highly recommend. The flavor in the Larb salad was explosive, so good. Try this spot with a group and order a bunch of dishes, it's worth trying a bunch of them.
Great food, great staff, great vibes🫡
Server was super cool and down to earth, recommended the #63 and it didn't disappoint. Not quite Pok Pok (r.i.p.) level but good Thai street food nonetheless.
My friends and I got food poisoning, We all got diarrhea and 2 of them also vomited!
so I called the restaurant to see how they would take responsibility. It turned out. They did not take any responsibility for this situation and did not say sorry at all. I left a phone number in case they realized that they might need to check up on customers somehow, but I was wrong, no one called back. I couldn’t believe how terrible they treated customers!!
*** No more Khao San restaurant because I don't want to end up at the hospital.****
I enjoyed my friends 30th birthday here and the food was incredible. I highly recommend it to anyone if you’re in the NW area of Portland.
Came here during Happy Hour 😊 had the spicy KP chicken 🍗🐔 and on the dessert menu the fried plantain banana ice cream 🍦 🤓👶
Great food, I had the pork and rice, my wife had the Drunken Noodles (name on menu was different, but same thing)
There isnt better Thai food than Khao San in the entire PNW. Dont think, just go here. ***Singha on TAP*** Huge healthy vegetable portions, Major scores on the meats too! Rice is always perfect. I literally want to stop eating at other restaraunts.
Delicious food, great service and fun atmosphere. The Tom Yum Goong was one of the best I've had. Definitely try the Hoy Joh. You can't go wrong with anything here.
Authentic street taste.
