Thai Food
I wanted to like this so bad. But I was overly disappointed.
We placed a pick up order. When I arrived to pick it up, the “hostess” took about 7 minutes to acknowledge my existence. Even though she was behind the counter, but she was making 2 cocktails. However, there’s a door singer that alerts when someone walks in, and she looked at me multiple times. Never once said “ be right with you” or anything.
After I got my food and came home, I was even more disappointed. I ordered the shrimp pad Thai. For $16-$17 dollars I expected shrimp pad Thai. However, I got a dish that contained 4 tail on shrimp. And a DENSE blob of overcooked rice? Noodles(almost like $.99 ramen packets noodles), that were suuuuuuper dry and not pad Thai noodles. There was also no chopped shrimp in the noodles like it says on the menu.
The flavor was overly bland. ( I chose medium spice).
Additionally we ordered an appetizer of the crab wontons. Bland in flavor, the cream cheese to crab ratio was way off ( 80/20 cheese to crab).
Sadly, I’m not even sure this is worth giving a second chance. For the price I paid, this food is way under satisfactory. I expected more shrimp and crab for the price on these two items alone. Highly disappointed. Sadly will not be recommending this establishment.
Always a treat to come to Khao San! The owner? Is always such a pleasure to interact with and is quick to help when needed. The food is always delicious and I love coming to eat in and also to do take out! Never remember to take pictures of the food because we are always so excited to eat!
Pretty authentic Thai street food theme! I've been to Thailand many times and have Thai family that loves to come here, the happy hour (4-6) is a great value. Kor Moo Yang is delicious among others!
We used to eat at the downtown location all the time when we lived in the Pearl. Imagine my joy when I found a location in our new neighborhood in Bethany village! I've never had a single thing on the menu that I didn't love. We have taken many friends here that swear it's the best Thai they have had in Portland, which is saying something because we have some great ones! Highly recommend their spicy basil chicken and their crispy pork belly and green beans. You can also purchase containers of their house-made chili oil. Happy hour on weekdays until 6 is also pretty good!
Found this little gem when in this neighborhood. True street food style and everything was above our expectations. We ordered char grilled beef salad, which was pretty spicy. Both grilled pork and fried chicken were excellent and pad Thai is good on a smaller portion. Worth to check it out if you want somewhat different then regular/main stream Thai food!
Came here on a Sunday afternoon. The Thai ice tea is very strong, and served in stainless cups. The sweet potato appetizer was delicious! The entrees were good sized for the price and great for family style sharing. The chicken ping (40) was very good. The pork belly with green beans (50), jungle curry, crispy basil with chicken (54), and pumpkin curry were good.
Good service and constant refills of our Thai tea. 4/5
Khao San is an authentic Thai experience. The food is amazing! This place is great with allergies. I am gluten and dairy free along with other allergies and have never had a problem eating here. The menu is clearly labeled with all potential allergens (dairy, gluten, soy, egg, and more) and even with my allergies, there are only a few items on the menu that I can't eat. For those of you who have food allergies, you know what a big deal this is. Some of my favorites on the menu include the Summer Rolls (hello peanut sauce!), Khao San Holy Basil Chicken, Spicy Chicken, Pad Thai, Kor Mu Yaang, and the Thai Iced Tea (free refills!). Khao San is a small, local business with amazing food and service. Go there....seriously...why are you still reading this? Go try it now!
This is one of the regular Thai restaurants. You can find some unique Thai street food options and also traditional Thai food items ( common in the US ) on the menu. The food quality and taste are great. They use unique ingredients/cooking methods that differentiate them from other average Thai resturants.Service is also good.

Food was delicious and ordering was fast. Great gluten free options.
Delicious food. Exceptional customer service. Highly recommend the yellow curry.
The food is good. Service can be a bit better. Not great place to eat but definitely doable.
The most authentic Thai food I had ever had in the US! Will definitely visit again.
Customer service was awesome the food delish
I never write reviews but I felt this place was fresh, delicious, and very reasonably priced. We got the pad kee mao with beef #62 and number 42 which was a pork dish. It was so good!
My friend and I can be a little picky about Thai food and gave this place a try during lunch, but we weren't too impressed by the food's flavors, found both the pad see ew and fried rice to be overly sweet. They do have good lunch prices and serving sizes, however. Service was adequate and the place was overall clean and simple.
The Holy Basil Chicken and Massaman curry combo goes crazy :)
Food is consistently delicious. Highly recommended. But also want to share that they went above and beyond when we had an issue with Door Dash. Though the lost delivery was 100% not their fault, they still remade the food and made sure it got to my door. This very high level of service is commendable! I am a customer for life now. Thank you Khao San.
Better for take out or dine out . Really memorable taste and speedy service
Had their basil fried rice. It was disgusting. No basil at all. had string beans which gave it a weird herb smell. rice was soggy. I would avoid ordering the basil fried rice.
Delicious, interesting choices, gluten-free choices, generous portions. One of my top several Thai food restaurants—low key, but kind of romantic.
I ordered takeout for lunch, chicken pad thai. What I got is not like any pad thai I've had before, not in a great way. To start, it looked like soup when I first opened it, literally standing water in the container. These are either spaghetti noodles or Ramen noodles, not pad thai noodles. The sauce is extremely sweet, not what you want when having pad thai. I had 2 bites and tossed the rest. I've eaten here a long time ago, it was good then. Don't think I'll be eating here anymore.
Can not order online as a guest. Required to make an account and provide lots of personal information.
Best yellow curry I’ve ever eaten. They were extremely accommodating and had plenty of clean seating!
Really good food with some fun surprises. I got SOM TUM PU PLA LA which is really pungent, I recommend if you like fish sauce a lot. KOR MU YAANG was tender and flavorful with a good char. SPICY GREEN BEAN WITH CRISPY PORK BELLY, the veggies were flavorful and pork was tender and crispy and delicious.

Good Place, been here often before but not great service waited 40 minutes for 1 appetizer and 1 main course food
fabulous local food
I love this little Thai place. It’s delicious and convenient. And the staff are super friendly.
The Pad Thai when I got for take out during lunch was not good. But maybe it was a one off.
The food is great but very inconsistent with spice. I order pad see eew at one spice level and it isn’t spicy at all so I go to the next spice level next time and it’s so spicy I can’t eat it. When spending decent money on food, I’d like to be able to actually eat it.
Food is good, but I get stomachache every time I tried…
Added a 20% tip on the bill without notice , employee that didn’t serve me tried to get me to tip 20% and called me rude for not paying the 20%
El peor lugar para comer, la mujer que está en la caja es super grosera y no tiene tacto para atender a los clientes, la comida tarda mucho en su elaboración de 25 a 30min aun no teniendo gente el establecimiento, pésimo lugar al igual que la experiencia.
Best Thai food we’ve had in Portland. Everything we’ve tried has been amazing.
Always a nice spot for tasty Thai food. Good quality food and service. Great for a quick meal.
I have to agree with one of the reviewers that says khao San is stingy over their vegetable. I have ordered pad Thai, pad kee mao and pad see ew. And 100% of the time the dishes is loaded with unbelievable amount of carbs heavy noodles. Think blood sugar spike and diabetes! Even one third of that amount can already spike our blood sugar. I think with the new generations where we are gearing towards a health conscious society, Khao San got to up their game and cut down on all this excess carbohydrates in their noodles. Please consider adding more vegetables into all your carbs heavy noodle. For example, adding more bean sprout, more Chinese brocolli, more red pepper, celery, carrot etc which are more nutrient heavy and healthy. And for those diabetic patients, please refrain from eating at khao San or ordering their noodles!
The items I've eaten at Khao San have all been excellent and authentic. The restaurant atmosphere is quite nice and it's in a pleasant area. Service has always been top notch, and with a smile!
Another poster has suggested Khao San in not authentic, and uses cheaper vegetables. In my experience the opposite is true, they use more expensive Chinese broccoli, this is authentic to Thai food, unlike the typical American broccoli and it costs significantly more. I've eaten at most of the local Thai restaurants, of them all, Khai San is by far my favorite for great Thai food served by great staff!
This place is not serving authentic Thai..the owners are not honest in the sense they don't put much veggies no matter what dish you would order they are frugal about putting variety of veggies for a person who don't eat meat ..I mean why would a person select veggie as a protein and you are putting nothing in return only 5-6 pieces of veggies
They add just the cheaper veggies .ppl are paying their hard earn money to get premium veggies in dishes n u r giving them spinach or 1 piece of veggies...you need to put alotttt of veggies and no frozen but fresh premium veggies in each of ur dishes..will not recommend anyone this restaurant ..the best one I found so far is Zab Thai restaurants go there cos they give real veggies and not frozen or cheap veggies...they are the gems in Thai food ..do not go to khao Sen in bethany area
This place has got to be one of our favorite Thai Cuisine restaurants in the area. We had the Khao Soi and the Massaman curry. Both the dishes were very good. In fact, we probably thought that the Khao Soi was one of the best we've had in a long time. The people here are very good. Great location. Ambience is also very nice. The only thing to note is that rice was not included in the curry dish, which is not typical. All in all a very good experience. We are definitely going to go back here again for the yummy food, and try out some other dishes too.
I had an incredibly disappointing experience at this restaurant. When my party and I sat down, we were ready to order, but we were ignored five times by the staff. Finally, when they did come to take our order, it was done with a rush and a terrible attitude.
To make matters worse, when it came time to pay for our meal, they didn't inform us of the total before taking our card. When we did receive our card back, there wasn't a single receipt unless we specifically requested one. This was clearly a tactic to sneak in excessively high tip rates that were completely unjustified by the terrible service we received.
Overall, it was a frustrating and unpleasant dining experience, and I would strongly advise against dining at this establishment.
Good
My wife is Thai, and this restaurant brings the culture as well as the food of Thailand to Bethany. The wife particularly likes the pumpkin curry.
This restaurant has some of the best Tye Food I have ever had. They have excellent Padtye and Spicey Crispy Basil Chicken w Rice is the best
I go there quite often when I feel like eating Thai. Food quality is great 👍. The menu is kind of similar to other Thai restaurants but their flavors are quite authentic. The amount tends to be a little on the less side but understandable due to their location.
We had delivery and these were two of the best meals we’ve had. Amazing flavor!!! Will be visiting frequently.
Great food and very friendly people. We love the outdoor seating too!
I go here often, the food is excellent and the service is great 👏👐
Try: #42 Kor Mu Yaang, Massaman Curry, Ping, Pad Thai
I do wish they had a green curry 🤤
We have picked up food from this location many times and always enjoyed it. I did tonight (4/26) after a long time.
The woman answering the phone to take the order was completely disinterested. That was a signal and we shouldn't have ordered. We went ahead anyway. When I brought the food home, the soup was awful. So called back ... and after listening to me the woman responded "this is how we make it sir!". Goodbye Khao San I guess.
I've never tried the food from this resteraunt until today. Was very surprised by how good the food tasted. 10/10. I normally can't find good food unless I drive out to the deep parts of Portland.
Food was good but customer service was slow. Employees in front seemed confused and bored (it was around 3:30pm)
It’s ok .. I’ve been to thai restaurants All over .. the Thai tea was bland food had no love ..service was ok will I be back ehhh maybe not
It was my first time that I ordered from this restaurant, and I was really disappointed. I ordered Shrimps pad Thai and paid an extra to have shrimp serving, and there was in total 7 little shrimps. So if I hadn’t payed for the extra that would mean that I would have had only 3 little shrimps?!
But instead there was a lot of carbs!
It was the first and last time.
A flawless dining experience. High quality food, service, and drinks. I need to go here way more often!
The food it great!

Khao San is close from my home and I sometimes order online, then pick up foods 10-15 mins later. I tried 4-5 different dishes at a different time and all were good and satisfied my expectation. It's really quick. So it works well in my busy week day.
So freaking good, surprised it was not more crowded on a Saturday evening.
Love the summer rolls and thai ice tea
This place always has great staff and delicious food. Love coming back here and trying all the different dishes!
Nice casual local spot with a different take on Thai. It's all very good.
First time I visit, it was okay. Yesterday, it was way too salty. Chicken skewer is tender and tasty. Khao Soi Chicken (egg noodle soup) is almost not edible that my throat hurts immediately after the first bite. Can't taste other flavors afterwards even Mussamum short ribs become bland.
My go to place for a good bite. It's inexpensive and the portions are large if you aren't the size of an average fat American. The staff are friendly and prompt with service. The food is really flavorful and the sauces they use are so good and eveything is fresh.
* dry pad thai
I had the Pad Thai it was delicious. Great atmosphere and enjoyed the meal tremendously.
Food is good service not so much specially when you order over the phone 😣
Everything we ordered was delicious. We especially enjoyed the larb, drunken noodles, roti, and papaya salad. The Thai milk tea is also amazing here. Great customer service as well!
Good Tai restaurant
Their Pineapple Fried Rice is really great!
I used to like it but I feel like something has changed. Not that much of a flavor in the dishes and I have a suspicion that there is no coconut cream in the food. New cook maybe...
A tasty little place with friendly service, but what ever you do don't ask them to spice it up, the next day and my mouth is still burning
Pay $2.5 for a small container of rice and they forget it. So, have to wait and cook it at home so we can eat the curry. They offer to refund it or go back and get it. Also, their fresh spring role bites for $8.5 are four half dollar size tiny roles. Won't go back.
Food may be okay. Service is horrible. Sitting in for 10 minutes without a cup of water. Waitress just dropped menus on the table then turn around w/o a word.
I dont often give reviews, but Grubhub deliveries are changing that for me.
Was very upset that the meal, Yellow Curry, didn't automatically come with the rice and those were an "addition". I guess I always need to read the fine print. I've never ordered curry in a restaurant that didnt come with rice.
Also the Thai teas were a bit strong and very little milk was added. We needed to add our own.
My husband did like his pork very much. #42. (But also didnt come with rice)
I just think that regardless if you're ordering in-house, to go, or delivery everything should be the same.
Authentic flavors...quick friendly service
Very good Thai food above mediocre but not like Wow level still recommend checking it out mostly everything is good
Horrible food. Try and feed this in Thailand!! I have no idea why people serve unauthentic food. We ordered Tom yum soup and pad Thai.
Good service, fair prices and pretty good Thai food.
Amazing and very authentic Thai place! Food tastes exactly like in Thailand - so happy to have found it. Green papaya salad and marinated chicken skewers are great!
Pretty bland flavors but okay enough. Definitely not the best Thai food in the area.
Their shrimp pad Thai is unique and delicious! Their khao Soi chicken is also really good and hearty.
Ordered shrimp pad thai, pumpkin curry and yellow curry and except for pad thai which was narrowly exceptable, both the curries failed miserably to reach even an acceptable mark. Although its none of my business but please take a lesson or two from MaNow restaurant which is just couple of miles away from you. I literally got nauceated after eating the pumpkin curry. Never gonna set foot in this one. Sorry.
One of our go to places. Spicy green beans with pork belly is a favorite.
Reliably delicious. This is a regular go-to for us. Pretty much everything we have tried is good. We especially love the khao soi chicken.
This is my first time eating here. We’ll find out if the food is good, but they have kind of an uppity attitude.
This place has the Worst Thai food you can ask for. I ordered pad kee mao and pad Thai with requesting extra sauce specifically. Pad kee mao was very bland with no sauce at all in spite of spicy order. Pad Thai was so sweet that my kid asked me if it was a dessert. This is the third time I am having a same experience with this restaurant.
Not bad. Authenticity-wise...not as good as it used to be 8n the city
I’m really grateful and impressed by the service at Khao San. I felt really bad because I came close to the end of the day; even still, they were so welcoming and friendly. The food is wonderful as well! I will be back :)
Only gave 2 stars for the speedy delivery. Ordered the crispy basil chicken and it was terrible. Tasted like left overs they warmed up the next day. Really disappointed and won't order from here again.
Could be a bit cleaner. But food was good.
Don’t order on uber eats. I specifically asked for utensils when I placed the order, but was not given any. I’m hungry and stuck at work for another hour with no eating utensils, so I guess I’ll be stuck with cold food later when I’m off.
Ok 👌
Everything is gluten free which is amazing for celiacs. Food is amazing to boot. Great as carry out but even better in. Pineapple fried rice with beef is the best.
We eat here once or twice a week and always take our guests here when we have visitors. The Khao Soi Chicken is a must try if you like yellow curry and the chicken ping has never disappointed. 🥰
This place was once great but they clearly have let success lead to laziness and poor quality food. They clearly are just trying to maximize their profit and have sacrificed all food quality. Sucks because this was my go to place.
Best meal ever!I had the beef stew curry, so good. I highly recommend and often get the basil bites.
I was really hoping to find just an average Thai food restaurant while I'm out of town, and they blew my freaking mind. Now I have to plan to drive an hour to go here again. They are amazing.
They may be a bit more on the cost side, but the flavor is worth it!!! My favs are the fresh spring bites and larb, but anytime I try something different, it never disappoints. Also a nice selection of cocktails that complement the dynamic range of favor each dish brings. So happy they are here in Bethany!!!
Definitely the best of this type , I tried this restaurant tome ago and can not compare . Excellent food .
A nice place to be. Excellent Pad Thai. Update: Still a great neighborhood restaurant.
My husband and I have been eating here for over two years, and do so 1-4 times a month. We have always loved your food, and it didn't bother us when the prices went up....because the food is great and portions also great. However, the last two times we've ordered food, our portions were only 3/4 of what they have always been, and my favorite dish (#62) was pretty bland. I was hoping that it was just a 'new employee', or another reason, but when it happened twice, we were very disappointed. We're not giving up yet, just in case something was just 'off', and not the fault of staff.
Thank you,
Linda & Rob
Portion sizes are very small. But the flavor is good. Servers are also very nice and professional
food is alright, service is bad, I lost my receipt and went back to ask for a print out, she said she can't print me a receipt, then I am ok for a hand written one, she is very impatient writing me the receipt, her attitude made me NEVER want to go there again !
We had take out from Khao San. It is as good as any take out Thai I have ever had. And that's a lot! I will go there again.
I enjoyed eating here. We came for lunch and sat outside under a big red umbrella, which is why my picture is so red haha. I ordered the seasonal special, vegetarian appetizer combo platter and pad see ew with tofu. I got full off the combo platter and only ate a little bit of my entree before taking the rest home. I honestly didn't love the entree, it had a bit of a funny flavor in my opinion but maybe that's just me. Loved the appetizer and getting to try so many different things. I would come here again. Got the mango rice pudding to go. It was pretty good.
I placed an order through Grubhub with "pad thai w/shrimp" and that did not taste as good as the cheapest one star restaurant I've been too. Grubhub also has on their site, catering sets menu 1-6. Khao san failed to call me so instead they charged me BUT are going to reimburse me AFTER I've paid. First, take that menu down if you guys stop catering. Second, before charging anyone call them and inform them and see if they would like to place a different order. I gave teo stars because the calamari was good just a little cold.
Bought there food for the first time. Excited to try it since so many of my neighbors say its delicious. I was beyond disappointed in the amount they served me once I got home to eat. I spend $10.50 and it was not even enough for my 2 year old. Definitely was my first and last time getting there food.
V bad quality Veg Pad Thai
The food is richly flavored, perfectly prepared. The menu features a number of dished rarely seen in average Thai restaurants. The grilled pork (kor mu yaang) was nicely grilled with a little char on the edges and the marinade was deliciously savory. It came with a spicy salty dipping sauce and fresh vegetables. It was just right paired with the boldly tangy green papaya salad(som tum thai) and sticky rice. Everything was very fresh tasting, attractively packed (take out only right now), and portions seemed about right for the price. Service was very friendly. I can’t wait to dine here again!
Always satisfies the Thai food hankering.
Favorite Thai spot in town and Thai is my favorite cuisine. After 3 years of frequenting Khao San I haven’t had a bad dish. Must try items are the Crispy Chicken Wings and the Mussaman Curry.
Delicious takeaway, friendly staff. :-)
I literally am here ten times a week. 💪💪
Food are decent but portion is not that big. Service is not desirable. They don't serve water or drink before you order
Best food clean restuarant and good location alot of parking spots.
Gives you a little less food than expected
My first impromptu visit was a happy one— a step above your typical mainstream Thai, both in terms of food quality, freshness and spicing, and the whimsical Khao San-themed decor. Plus the staff were super friendly and they offered gluten-free lightly breaded stir-fried items (meat coated with rice flour) that I have not found anywhere else in the Portland Area. Normally, items with breading are always off limits for we gluten-free folks....so this is a nice treat. Thank you!
Ordered take-out here last night. Larb, Crispy Chicken Basil, Drunken Noodles, and Thai Iced Tea. this place never disappoints.
khao san makes delicious food. Tom yum goong, green papaya salad, everything you'd want from a thai spot and it's all consistently good. i've been going here since they opened and it's remained totally great. service is welcoming and prompt, the building itself feels clean and airy.
I just picked up my $14 Pad Thai. Ridiculously small. I shouldn't still be hungry after spending $14 on a meal. I took a picture but can't post here.
Yummy!! 4.5
This is one of my wife and I's favorite places. We love that they have so many great options for people with gluten allergies. That aside, they have amazing food whether you care about gluten or not.
Not good for Indians
Found this little gem when in this neighborhood. True street food style and everything was above our expectations. We ordered char grilled beef salad, which was pretty spicy. Both grilled pork and fried chicken were excellent and pad Thai is good on a smaller portion. Worth to check it out if you want somewhat different then regular/main stream Thai food!
Eh. Okay food, but to be fair they were overwhelmed when I visited.
Excellent food and service. Love little bus to take photos in and waitress helped with photos.
The rice noodles tasted like I was chewing on a condom I can only imagine
Even if we didn't live down the block, this would be our go-to Thai place. I end up ordering here weekly as I just can't get enough of the food and I love that they label everything for those with dietary restrictions (gluten-free/vegetarian/etc). Our favorites:
Mussaman Curry (ordered Spicy): just the right blend of curry, spices and sweetness from the coconut milk, love the sweet potatoes in here
Kor Mu Yaang - amazingly tender char-grilled pork
Calamari - gluten free fried squid?!? - I'm in!
Hoy Joh - fried nuggets of deliciousness - crab/shrimp/pork in tofu skin
Fresh Spring Bites - the perfect, light palate cleansers
Coco Potato Fries / Chicken Wings - mouthgasm in every bite
Mango with Sticky Rice - their rendition is my favorite ever as they mix in black forbidden rice with the jasmine.
Amazing service to boot; all the girls who work here are friendly and do their job very well.
Worse food and even worse service! Tried them twice but will never come back 👎🏼
Love the food!
The place is smaller than the downtown location..
but the food quality is the same! And large portion of food!
It’s the best!
Thai tea is a must try for sure.. love the free refills!
Not great vegetarian options
食物美味,奶茶可續,沙嗲無懈可擊
Imo
This is the go-to place when we visit friends nearby. Nice and cozy. Food is great. And it has a Thai street style tricycle that the kids love!
