Southern Thai Fried Chicken, Curry and Roti and other favorite foods from Southern Thailand
Good vibes overall. The drink has so much ice in it!!! Omg like more than half is ice and it was $8! The curry was okay but was served kinda cold with the bread. The combo was just so-so, as the chicken had a thick butter coating. It might be better to just order the chicken wings on their own.
The service was a bit slow, but it was a busy and packed place when we were there for dinner.
3.5/5 - Food is decent, really enjoyed the atmosphere, service is on the slow side since the spot gets super busy!
Would avoid the Hat Yai combo and just go for their curries or other specials. The fried chicken was a bit disappointing. It had a super crunchy outer crust, with a hint of anise, and was warm and tender on the inside. However, it wasnt anything phenomenal, so I wouldn't go out of my way to eat this. The rest of the dish was also a bit disappointing. Apart from the chicken, the curry cools quickly, the sticky rice was cold and the pickled veggies was cold. The food was tasty, but it's just not a very warming meal.
That said, I really enjoyed the vibes at this place. Great music and enthusiastic workers. They were really working hard getting those orders out.
There's potential here, just not with their fried chicken and Hat Yai combo.
Went to the same place twice - that should tell you how much we liked it. However, our second visit didn’t wow us as much as the first one. The fried chicken spices were a bit over powering… so was the flank steak. During our first visit we tried the duck special and the hokkien noodles - both tasted top notch
This is a no frills, quick eatery with a smaller but appealing menu.
The curry was delicious with limited heat spice. The fried chicken was crispy and on the lighter side with the spices, which made it perfect with the Chili sauce. The only downer was the over cooked "sticky rice". Service and delivery were professional and quick.
A friend recommended we meet here for dinner and I’m glad we did. She said this would be the best Thai fried chicken we ever tasted and it did not disappoint. A whole chicken fried crispy and served with a delicious chili sauce. Broke da mout.
The cauliflower with egg was excellent, as was the pork, pork belly and roti with curry.
Service was quick and attentive, and the energized ambiance made it a great spot for conversation. We’ll be back for sure. 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
I have been hearing a lot of great things about this place. So my husband and I decided to give it a try with a friend. We ordered the Chicken Curry Broth with Roti - 9/10, Southern Pad Thai -9/10, and Chicken leg quarter 8/10. For drinks we tried the Lychee Mango Slushy -9/10 and IPA beer - 10/10.
Would go back again for sure!
The braised chicken thigh in curry was the star of the show. Tender and flavorful- cooked to perfection! Roti and pickled veggies complement the dish well. Most people talk about the fried chicken when it comes to Hat Yai, but personally it’s not my style. Outside is just a bit too fried and possibly compromising the juiciness and flavor of the chicken.
Otherwise a great little spot with new specials on the board that keep you coming back.
Chicken is a great mix of spice and crunch. Rotating specials have never disappointed, though they man it when they say spicy.
I docked one star because this restaurant is hard to navigate: there are signs everywhere (I counted at least five) telling you what to do/not do/how to do it. Is overwhelming to walk in the front door. If you can get past that, I thought the food was pretty good.
Agree with a previous poster about the amount of ice in the drinks: too much!
This is one of those places in which I don’t
Understand how it has a single bad review and I truly think those people just have bad taste. The food is phenomenal - the whole menu. I’ve always experienced super fast service, nothing less. It’s very clean. 100/10 recommend this place.
The food is fantastic. Always choose to dine in or pick up your order. If you order for delivery, the website is not always right on if delivery is available or if they have the people to deliver. I have had orders cancelled because of this.
Mixed bag here. The food was alright, although it was more fast casual than authentic feeling. Some of our group's dishes weren't on par with expectations based on high reviews. The serving dishes were definitely cheap. Service was fast for how busy it was, and the location definitely has an authentic divey feel. Would've rather had a proper sit-down Thai meal somewhere else than a rushed, cramped table here.
So great at take out and their Thai Iced tea is some of the best around
The fried chicken platter for 4 was such a treat! Go with friends! The roti and curry go so well with the chicken. I can't recommend enough!
All you want is good food without the frills. This place was pretty amazing… order, sit, food comes out in a few mins and you’re satisfied. Fried chicken was crisp and flavorful! Would come again before our time in Portland is up.
This place is so stellar every time I have gone. The chicken is next level. I love the spice combination. I appreciate that the staff really know their stuff and they warned us once about a super spicy duck curry and they were right. I'm a spice wimp but I ordered it anyways. It was mad spicy and I wept tears of joy. It was so so good. Absolutely beautiful food. I am so happy to live in the same town as Hat Yai <3
This is hands down one the WORST places to get fried chicken in Portland. Price point? Insane. Food quality? Abysmal. Taste? Devoid of any. The sauce? What even is that? Watered down duck sauce? I was always skeptical but had to find out if my instincts were right that this place was trash. If I could ask for a refund, I would. Please avoid if you ACTUALLY want a good meal. Only upside? Food came out about as fast as a cheese burger from McDonald's. If putting bad food in your mouth as soon as possible is your game, look no further.
My husband is half Thai and spent a month in Thailand last year, and this restaurant was yummy but even too spicy for him!! He said it was the spiciest dish he’s had since being in Thailand. (He got the ground pork. He couldn’t finish it. Both curries were also crazy spicy, as well as the Pad Thai if you don’t mix in the pile of spice, which one of my kids neglected to do—she couldn’t taste anything after those first two bites.) He will not go back. Same for two of our teens who love spice and two of their friends..the 18-year-old boy was tearing/crying. Why not MENTION the extreme spice on the menu?? Why make it SO spicy when customers can simply add a bit more spice if they want? Ironically my husband said this was the most authentic Thai food he’s ever had at U.S. restaurant yet from the outside (and even inside) it didn’t look Asian at all! He thought it was a chicken sandwich restaurant. My family said that most people were just eating the fried chicken and they totally get why!
Also, limited menu. No sticky rice. Small portions.
My college kid says, “That place is actually crazy. If you ate there, you’d have to go to the hospital.” Please use less spice so food doesn’t get wasted and people don’t have to suffer through their meals!
Food was great, restaurant was clean and staff was friendly.
This is a place that I crave on cold rainy days. The curry is soo good. I do think the portions for the curry are a little small and very overpriced but the meals are delicious!
Awsome food !! 😋
Good! Portions are kind of small. If they were more generous with the curry and maybe added coconut to the plain sticky rice, would take things up a notch.
This is the first time I’ve had Thai chicken and OMG it’s absolutely delicious. From how the chicken was cooked to the curry and the roti - my favorite! This is definitely one of my favorite PDX restaurants.
Very welcoming and helpful staff, top notch. Excellent long window across whole wall for outside people & traffic-watching. Smells DIVINE.
This was my first visit to the brick and mortar after regularly ordering their food on delivery apps (which I do multiple times a month). Was just as good in person! The space is no frills and casual.
It gets packed in the evening on a Friday but the tables turnover pretty fast. I’m a big fan of the Hat Yai plate, as well as the pad Thai and white brisket curry.
Food is great…best in Portland.
The atmosphere and service is ok. I was disappointed with the food. Every single dish is too salty. The song is so loud.
Quick service, friendly staff, kinda a bad neighborhood.
The food was great, and the service was spectacular.
Great food and customer service
Delicious food and reasonable service!
This is a no frills, quick eatery with a smaller but appealing menu.

Fast, friendly, flavorful. Took a chance on a place if never been. So glad I did!

The chicken was overcooked and very dry.

Great place to try new twist on old favorites. This southern grandma liked the chicken.
Best fried chicken in the city and the staff are great!
A friend recommended we meet here for dinner and I’m glad we did. She said this would be the best Thai fried chicken we ever tasted and it did not disappoint. A whole chicken fried crispy and served with a delicious chili sauce. Broke da mout.

Food was too over hyped, especially their fried chicken. Roti to expensive, However, drinks were good.
We had Hat Yai for 2. Great curry and chicken was not overcooked.
Everything was delicious! I don’t eat spicy, just make sure you ask no spicy without chili powder and it’s not spicy at all! One of the best curries and pad Thai’s I’ve ever eaten.. we’ve order chicken hat yai for 2 , one pad Thai and one mushroom skewers ( This one was spicy, I couldn’t eat) portions were great and a lot of food! Ambiance is awesome, seat outside for a more chill vibe… loud music but cute dance vibe inside … service is super good … curry and chicken with roti are a must .
We also ordered a drink and Thai tea no álcool and both were delicious
Wow! Seriously blown away! So delicious! Chicken skewers! A must! Comes with a delicious chopped green & vinegar medley
Food is yummy and never disappoints. Restaurant has outdoor and indoor seating. Casual atmosphere and a lot of things are self-service like water, napkins, utensils and bussing your own table. Service also doesn't take long which is great! You should definitely stop in when you have a chance to try it out.
Super busy. Hard to find a table. But worth every wait.
Great food, not super expensive
Best value, nicest staff, incredible taste on everything delivered. The reviews on this establishment literally pissed me off. My girlfriend accidentally spilled a drink, and it was replaced on the house within 60 seconds. I asked for the bathroom code and beer, and they no kidding gave me a beer left it on counter for when I came back from the bathroom. I’ve ate at fine dining restaurant around the US and would rank the service of this restaurant right up there with them. Wish I could give more than 5 stars. Drinks on me if doesn’t deliver
I don’t know what else to say other than I was disappointed with the food. The rice was dry and overcooked and I didn’t like the chicken (wings) at all. I also ordered a cucumber salad and it came with such a small portion. I ordered delivery and it did not come with utensils and napkins.
Best fried chicken I have had. Cooked perfectly crispy skin, juicy tender chicken with amazing flavor. Got some of the curry to dip the chicken in and it was amazing as well, tons of flavor. Menu was clearly marked for gluten free.

The food was great, particularly the chicken thighs which were in a tasty
Curry sauce. The food came quickly and they moved a crowd through the ordering line pretty quickly for a Saturday lunch rush . The outdoor seating is a set of picnic benches on two sides of the shop and it was all shaded during the lunch hours. Bus your own tables meant that the outdoor tables were a tad grungy but the ample seating, great food, and street side vibe definitely offsets that.
Yummy this place is delicious! Get the mango horchata😋
One of Portland’s best restaurants. Their combo chicken, curry, roti, sticky rice, and pickled vegetables is one of the best meals you can find in the city.
Food was excellent and amazing, inside was a bit too noisy. Other than that all was amazing
A very Portland kind of Thai place! Not your steripicle "Pad Thai and Curries" restaurant. Food was very good! I recommend checking out the menu online before you go.
Dined in on the picnic tables outside with overhead heaters. Food was great and some of the best quick Thai we’ve had in Portland (rivals wild rose in Bend iykyk!).
The roti is a must (add the curry broth, it’s worth it). We ordered the chicken wings and the Phuket noodles with shrimp which were both great. As a hack, dip the sticky rice in the curry broth for extra flavor… makes every bite that much better.
Stopped in for lunch and really enjoyed the #2 lunch with braised chicken thigh with a scrumptious peanuty curry, thick roti and large chunks of pickled veggies. Glad there were outside picnic tables as the music was a bit loud in the dining room. Everything is self service (utensils, water) plus bussing your table at the end.
I went to the Belmont location after it first opened years ago. The fried chicken was fantastic and still is but the dish I want to talk about is the Phuket Hokkien Noodles. When I tried this dish years ago it was one of the best things I had ever tasted. It was thin egg noodles with a super flavorful sauce that wasn't watery or greasy. The presentation was great, the noodles nicely swirled in a simple yet elegant white bowl, little dried shrimp and a few decoratively sliced shallots on top. After eating this dish I tried to recreate it at home many times and always failed to match the perfect balance of flavors that Hat Yai brilliantly executed. I went back more than a few times just for the noodles. After a hiatus I went back and it was off the menu which sucked but the fried chicken was still great.
I went back yesterday and saw the noodle dish on the menu again! I was very excited but this time it was different. Instead of the thin egg noodles served neatly in a bowl it was thick udon served on a small plate. The presentation was not great but whatever the flavors matter most. The sauce was watery and pooling at the bottom. The flavors were different and very mild. I'm sorry it sucked. The dish is now an afterthought compared to the dark horse it was years ago. While the fried chicken is still very good the menu's a one hit wonder now. I shouldn't say that I haven't had the duck.
Friendly. Yummy. Awesome cider.
After originally going to their location in Alberta, I stopped by this one (Belmont). I dream of being wrapped in the roti.
For three people we ordered:
• Hat Yai For 2
• Southern Pad Thai
• Smoked Duck Breast Choo Chee Curry
As always, everything was phenomenal. The duck curry, while extremely delicious, was a little too spice for me- so that was left for my friend.
We had very little left over, and found ourselves extremely full, maybe even a little over stuffed.
Terrible food the waitress was really rude and unprofessional. I would not recommend coming here. If you are a tourist, they will try to take advantage of you and up the prices it is a fact also, they do use my fake reviews to give their selfs more ratings.
What can I say? The fried chicken leg quarter was perfect! Best fried cluck I've had for just $12.
It was served with rice and I gobbled it up under the outside covered table.
This chicken has an incredible coconut flavor that I have never experienced.
I thought I might still be hungry but I actually ate half and had a good portion left for a snack at midnight.
Who am I kidding? I couldn't wait that long.
Fast service with a genuine smile made me comfortable to eat alone but would definitely like to bring my friends.
The hat Yai for 2 is a go-to for a little bit of everything
i would happily eat two more of this exact meal TODAY. i feel reborn.
Sooo good! Best fried chicken I've had in so long. Very tasty pickled vegetables. Roti - savory and dessert were perfect!
one of my favorite Thai places in Portland! all their food is amazing but my favorites are the curry & roti and cauliflower. the drinks (cocktails and mocktails) are delicious as well
This place is soo good that I want to give it a 1 star rating...so then everyone else will think it's bad and I can have all the chicken to myself.
The hat yati combo is sooooo delicious! I would come back again and again for that perfectly crispy, light, flaky chicken dipped into the flavorful curry. The bread was equally as good. The sticky rice was left to be desired, a little undercooked and dry. My husband ordered the smoked duck curry. Whoah!! It was spicccy get ready for a flavor explosion. My mouth was on fire and I love spice. Husband quickly dipped his food in my curry because the description did not warn of a spicy flavor profile and he hates spicy food. It was easily level 4/5 spice so beware. Also note it took about 30-40 min for the duck curry and my hat tai combo came out in under 15.
Went here a few weeks ago and the chicken plate with roti and curry was AMAZING!!!!!!! Will definitely be coming back!!!
Everything we had was amazing.
Such an amazing experience, great food, awesome staff, spectacular atmosphere!!! Can’t wait to go back!!
Everything was good. Nothing more, nothing less.
I’m not sure what I like more about this place: the food or the plants! The food photos are terrible because we dug RIGHT in!!
This was my second time visiting this restaurant and it was just as good as the first. We ordered the Hat Yai for 4, Brisket Curry and the special-Phuket Hokkien Noodle. We also had Thai iced tea this time which was great. The Roti is fried perfectly and using that with the curry broth, sticky rice and the crispy fried chicken is incredible! That is my fave but my husband preferred the brisket. The brisket was good and had a little kick! We had a friend with us who was allergic to shell fish so they gave him the vegan broth. He thought it was yummy!
The atmosphere of this place is chill and the employees are always friendly and helpful.
Food portion sizes are large. Great service!
I haven’t eaten there yet.. but I will be coming in tomorrow. Today I was driving by and saw a man across the street having a mental health crisis. A Hat Yai employee quickly ran over and was assisting the man. It completely melted my heart. I loved how it wasn’t their job to do it but they’re looking out for their community in all aspects.
Delicious, great service, delicious drinks
Great food, great service! It was busy when we arrived but they quickly made space for us while we ordered. I recommend the meal for one and an extra side to try a little bit of everything!
This place is simply fantastic. Great menu options, very fresh, quick service, some of the best Thai food I've had. We shared several items and all were perfectly prepared. Absolutely worth the visit!
Delicious!! The chicken was cooked perfectly and I loved the pickled onions. I had the mango coconut horchata as well - so unique and tasty!
The friad chicken was so good
Loved the brisket curry and roti - amazing flavors and proper spice ☺️
This is easily one of the best meals I've had in Portland. The Hat Yai combo is phenomenal. The chicken is flavorful and perfectly crisp and crunchy. Fried shallots on top are a nice touch. The dipping sauce was great too. Served with a delicious curry that was Malaysian style so it's a little sweeter. Perfect compliment to the savory fried chicken. Also came with roti, sticky rice, and pickled veggies. I savored every single bite of this perfectly paired dish and certainly ate more than I had planned on eating. It was so good I couldn't stop! I will absolutely be back and I will be craving this often.
Amazing food. Got the pork. Can’t remember the name of it but oh wow. I’ll be back for it!!!
Delicious!
To the person working the front on 2/15, I’m sorry I didn’t get your name. Thank you for being so kind and putting a meal together for me even though you were closing down. I really appreciate you and I love hat yai!!
Their Hat Yai meal for two was superb. We enjoyed their crispy Thai chicken paired with sticky rice, a naan like bread, and their exquisite curry. The curry in particular was very flavorful and had a strong coconut taste. Finished with a Thai iced tea. Overall delightful experience.
Wish I could give more than 5 stars, this place is incredible!!!
Great Thai spot, with some variations on what I'm used to seeing at Thai restaurants. The southern phad Thai was yummy with a little kick. The quarter fried chicken with curry and roti was yummy! I would not get the coffee again (the cardamom was a bit strong for my taste but I like trying new/different things) but Thai iced tea was good. We appreciated it was easy to accommodate dairy and, for my wife, egg allergies (there is no egg in the fried chicken batter but there was egg in the roti so she had rice)
I had the fried chicken wings and my friend and I split the mushroom skewer and dessert roti.
This place was very busy on Friday night. We had to wait in line for about 15 -20 minutes, then sit in the lobby for another 10 minutes before we were seated at our table. However, despite the rush, the wait staff were all very polite and genuinely nice and helpful.
The food was a delight. I absolutely loved the mushroom skewer, which was a king oyster mushroom and came in some curry that was perfectly spicy and flavorful. This was my favorite dish.
After seeing the reviews of the fried chicken, I decided to try it. It was really good. The spices and dipping sauce are tangy which complements the fried chicken. It's definitely worth trying.
The dessert was also good.
Super nice staff, excellent curry, good vibes. Big fan.
The food is delicious and tasty. I will definitely return and enjoy their braised chicken and house curry. The atmosphere is nice, music is a bit loud but overall a nice place to enjoy dinner.
It’s ok
🤤🤤
This review is just for the Phuket hokkien noodles and pad thai. Both get two thumbs up from this snobby eater. I wasn't in the mood for fried chicken so was happy that they had other options. Both were absolutely delicious and well executed. The pad thai especially, it's saucy and slightly sweet, add a splash of lime to tweak it to your liking. Yes.
I've frequented here at least once a week for the first year I discovered it. Even years later, I still crave their fried chicken wings. My favorite is the spicy duck curry, but the roti and pickled vegetables are a great pairing. Honestly, everything here is a 10/10.
Okay let me start by saying I don't usually like fried chicken but the chicken here I'll eat. It's perfectly crispy, not too greasy and not overly breaded. Seriously the best fried chicken I've ever had. Then you add the roti, curry and rice and it's the perfect meal packed full of flavor. The drinks and desserts are also wonderful.
Unfortunately, this was one of my favorite spots, but the last few food orders have been big let downs and inconsistent. Undercooked rice, cold and not fresh Roti, and on to go orders the sauce portions were far too small. If I’m going to pay these prices for their food, I expect better consistently, and not worth risking the expense in the future.
Not enough seats. Food’s good.
Brisket Curry is really good!
Super quick service, albeit somewhat clueless, but not worth waiting for.
The food is very bland, and smells off. Maybe bad or unclean oil? Certainly they don't use enough seasoning. Genuinely gross and won't return. We stopped halfway home to get it out of the car.
We had Phuket noodles, wings, braised pork, and a mushroom skewer. All bad. The chicken was especially dark and acrid tasting. Neither of us were able to finish our meals.
Their menu is also inaccurate.
Price is very high for portion sizes too.
Probably the second worst restaurant I've tried in Portland, absolutely the worst Thai.
Edit: It's a day later and conditions have, er, worsened. Send Pepto and fluids.
Food was delicious. Drinks were delicious.
Fast-casual restaurant with highly addictive food and solid cocktails.
Actually, I’ve only gotten the Chicken / Curry / Roti combo from here because it’s so good I can’t bring myself to order anything else. (Even though the rest of the menu looks great)
had the chicken skewer and thai ice tea- both were great, kind staff
I’ve been a couple times now and keep hoping I’ll like it more than I do.
Got the duck curry special on this last visit and while it was pretty delicious, the portion size was surprisingly small. It was also verrry spicy in a way that the menu hadn’t indicated. I do tend to go for the medium spicy option, but I powered through since it tasted good. However, that was a decision that left me tossing and turning at 2:30 in the morning filled with digestive regrets. Alas.
Probably won’t come back unless someone I’m hanging out with insists.
People seem to like the fried chicken, but I didn't think it was that good. It was crispy but the meat was dy. The Pad Thai was ok, but I would not order it again.
I’m originally from Hatyai. Came here all the time when I visit Portland. Loved their food, very authentic southern Thai food. I feel bad to leave a negative review but I had to so the management can improve their food better. I had early dinner yesterday and ordered Fried Chicken with sticky rice. Moo Hong, Kua Gling and Brisket Curry. Very disappointed with the food, fried chicken was good but found a long black hair as almost the end of my dinner! Sticky rice was super dry, Kua Gling was very wet and oily (they used to served perfect Kua Gling) Only thing that still tasted good was Brisket curry. I will still come here next time I visit Portland as I miss my hometown food, hopefully they bring back their old food standards.
Loved the food. It was a completely different experience. The fried chicken was terrific, the curry and parathas were fantastic. We enjoyed everything.
Amazing food, great allergy friendly options.
The food at Hat Yai was lovely! The chicken was fried and spiced well, and so tender and juicy. We opted for the 4 person shared chicken, which came with roti, rice, and sweet curry. The curry was delicious and well balanced, and went beautifully with the chicken. We got some of the specials too, which were equally tasty. This is a great fried chicken option, and I was happy with the versatility of the menu. Excited to come back for more!
Y’all looking for the best fried chicken in Portland and Oregon? This is it. Incredible spices, perfect cook, beautiful Thai sweet chili sauce on the side, and it can be ordered to share with your whole group via a full bird. You need to try their not-to-be-missed cauliflower, delicious pickles, and cucumber salad that is totally on point credit union, and don’t forget to order a basil limeade - there are some insanely incredible taste combinations occurring at this restaurant! The food is forward, modern, well-balanced, and incredible! Now stop reading and go get yourself some chicken!
I’ve been here multiple times now for completely different types of dishes, all fire. Cocktails are bomb too
So incredibly slow. This is an automatic cancel/reject for me when doing food delivery now. You will lose money and see your hourly average tank if you decide to pickup an order from here. And don't even think about just leaving the hazard lights on and running in--you'll likely get towed for leaving your car in the street for 30+ minutes waiting for this slow slow place to make your order. Yet another amoral restaurant that accepts orders it cannot timely fulfill just to make money off of the backs of delivery driver losses. Vile.
