My boyfriend and I went to their new location in Chapel Hill on August 31, 2024. This place was recommended to me by a co worker.
Our server, Vera, was very knowledgeable and pleasant.
For our appetizer, we split the Crisy Frief Tofu. with sauce. The appetizer was very delicious and came out piping hot. The presentation was great too. I was actually able to use the chopsticks with the appetizer and some with my entree!! π
I ordered the Massaman Curry with Fried Tofu in a coconut milk (cream sauce ?) which included potatoes, onions, cashews and other spices. I told our server I donβt eat as spicy, so she recommended to order the dish as it comes (mild).
She was right on point. I brought a little home for my mom since she likes Massaman curry, but she found it a little sweet because it was ordered as mild which was perfect for me. My mom still liked it. The dish comes with white rice.
My boyfriend got the tofu pad Thai which normally comes with fish sauce and eggs.
If you are vegan or vegetarian, they can leave out the eggs and/or fish sauce.
We also got a dish for my boyfriendβs roommate. He wanted the Chicken Red Curry. I told Vera that he wanted spicy, but not too spicy. She recommended the spice level of 1.5. My boyfriend said his roommate really enjoyed the meal.
We will definitely be back! Nice, but casual place for a date night. The ownerβs name is Jay ( not sure if I spelled that right). The decor on the walls inside is nice.
Unbelievably delicious food, drinks, and truly excellent service. 3/5 for the atmosphere for dark walls, soft music, very few flies, and ants on our table, but it looked like they just did landscaping so perhaps the ants were stirring (cute landscaping, too). I'm so happy this establishment expanded, and I can not wait to see their evolution. 5/5 if you order take away.
First and foremost, this restaurant can make Thai dishes including curries without fish sauce and oyster sauce so that they're truly vegetarian.
A lot of people are complaining about the high spice levels and these reviews, but I did not find them any different from most other Thai restaurants. The mild was mild and the medium was reasonably medium. That being said, I was not a fan of the Thai basil sauce with their Bangkok 54 sauce. For whatever reason, I couldn't really taste the basil component of it.
The crispy tofu was very good and so were the fresh spring rolls. I would say even the green curry that we ordered was extremely flavorful, though it turned out to be a bit sweet; maybe that was because we asked for it to be mild? So be wary of it. I would also say that the Thai iced tea was a bit too mild in flavor for my taste.
There is a reasonable amount of outdoor seating here and the people that work here are accommodating.
Great place for lunch or dinner. Some dishes were standouts but some were very average. The standouts were the massaman curry and the red curry. The average dishes were the ginger sauce and the pineapple fried rice. Would have liked more pineapple and maybe a little less turmeric in the pineapple fried rice. Definitely a great spot for Thai food and next time I will be trying the whole fish, it looked awesome.
Excelente Thai food
One of the worst experiences Iβve ever had at a restaurant. My girlfriend and I are regulars and always come here. From the start it was a bad experience, we were not greeted when we walked in and then once we were, we were told to sit anywhere and the spot we wanted to sit had someoneβs coat who wasnβt even occupying it. We get the pad thai level 3 spice but itβs not quite hot enough, so we tried the level 4 spice. It was WAY too spicy it became inedible. All the waitress said was if we knew our spice levels and we said yes we get a level 3, but we learned 4-5 uses ghost pepper. There was no warning from the waitress and no indication on the menu of such. The staff saw that we were not enjoying our food and did nothing about it, did not even ask if we were okay. Thatβs not the only thing, we also wanted to try a new dish since we only have gotten the pad Thai, we saw good things on the masaman curry so ordered it, but once it came out, the waitress TOOK our silverware so we had nothing to eat it with. We decided to leave and asked for a Togo container and she brought out a cardboard box that cannot hold the curry. Terrible waitress and service. Will not be coming back again, lost 2 regulars.
I lived in New York City for half a decade and have visited Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. This place would be top notch even in any of those places, let alone Chapel Hill, which is full of mediocre Thai places with fancy decor. Maybe the decor here won't floor you, but the food and the friendly welcoming staff will.
EDIT: After they moved buildings, the food got more mediocre and also their spicing is now terrible. A 2 here is a wimpy medium, and a 3 is take your head off spicy, made with ghost pepper. My dinner tonight, a 3, was hotter than anything I remember having in Thailand, and I ordered things spicy when I was there. I'm very well acquainted with spicy food. Disappointed. Bumped down to 4 stars, but maybe it should be a 3.
Poor quality food and service and continues to go downhill. Cleanliness around the kitchen seems suspect and rodents outside the building starting to get out of hand.
Always good Thai food. Been coming here for 10+ years and they never disappoint
Pad Thai was xlnt. Ask for level 2 hot.
Go and try it with a large hot sake.
This place has good food, donβt get me wrong, but the service is awful. They have 1 person waiting tables during a regular night so expect to wait a long time.
For us we had to walk out the first time after waiting 20 minutes and then the second time, I had to get up and get the 1 waiter to come take our order after 15 minutes of waiting without even getting our waters.
Twice now with terrible service. I am not coming here again.
I ordered the shrimp Massaman it was good with chicken wings..the wings were terrible..over cooked dried out no flour..like they just dropped in hot grease no season!!
One of our family's take out faves. Nice to sit at too now that they moved to the other side of the strip mall with ample outdoor seating. We love the green and red carries and the jerk beef appetizer is deliah too!.

this restaurant has never let me down! super tasty, well cooked, well seasoned, kind service ... and beautiful space.
Incredible food. Prompt & professional service. Always super hot & fresh. New favorite Thai food in Durham/ Chapel Hill.
Bangkok 54 is a hidden gem! The staff is very kind, and the food is always tasty. I love the red curry with tofu. The salad dressing has peanuts, so I opt for the house soup. The lunch portions are ample for the price. In 2024, there are very few places left that offer lunch for $11! I do wish there were more veggies included in the red curry. However, I always leave full, so I can't complain. Looking forward to seeing their setup in the new building (same shopping center)!
Simply the best Thai of the triangle. We go to Bangkok every week since 2018 and the quality has been consistently high.
I have been getting takeout from here for the last 3 years now and I love their food. Their fried rice is a must and I have been a fan of their pad see ew.
5/5 if you order take away.
food tasted quite bland to me, and portion sizes were too small for the price I paid.
Tastes ok (a bit salty tbh) but not nearly enough food for to-go orders considering the hefty price (granted, i have only ordered here once). I donβt know if this is normal or if I got them on a bad day but Iβm not going to order again from them.
Service was outstanding and the food was delicious. Their Pad Kee Mow is one of the best Thai dishes Iβve had. Great job.
New location is 6209 falconbridge Rd chapel Hill Grand opening Monday 6.17.24
Love this place. Food is good, the spice is good, and it's consistent. It's way outside my normal dinner range but definitely worth the trip.
Sensational food, with sensational service. I love Bangkok 54! π
I ordered take out twice this week. The prices are never the same. I retrieved my wallet to use a credit card before she calculated the total, in the name of being prepared. She was about to write a total until she glanced over and seen the $100 bills in my wallet. I've never paid $98 for 3 rice and chicken meals. There should be set prices for the food items.
Togo portion was small for dinner price. Food was good but not worth the money for their portions.
Any and all of the noodle and rice dishes are incredible, definitely give this place a try!
This place is a hidden gem with great food at fair prices and they have the extra hot chili powder if that's your thing. It's my thing and they made me very happy.
We used to go to Bangkok 54 for lunch weekly, but now that we live near the restaurant, weβve started getting dinner, usually to go. We just picked up the most complex combination of dishes and everything was so delicious! Good portion sizes, full-flavored and fresh traditional Thai spices, and just the right amount of heat in the spicy dishes. I had forgotten how perfect their Tom Yum soup is (itβs the traditional savory style, not the version tainted by sugar). Highly recommend this restaurant and the friendly staff/owners.
I love Bangkok 54 so much, foods itβs so good papaya salad also β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
Service was great, food has no flavor
The food and the staff are always so friendly. The menu offers a wide variety of options to cater to different tastes and dietary restrictions. The dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients and bursting with flavors. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable, always ready to provide recommendations or answer any questions. Whether you're a regular customer or a first-time visitor, you'll feel welcomed and well taken care of at this establishment.
Whenever I'm in Chapel Hill/Durham, I come here. They never miss with their pad thai. Get the lunch special on weekdays!
This is a regular restaurant we like to visit. Itβs small but cozy. Does not get super noisy. Service is great.
Be nice. Easy. Empty and still waited 15. Portion size is a crime. Seriously. Pad Thai - no bueno. Masaman - fantastic. This place use to be great. Boo.
Friendly staff, delicious food. Bangkok Street Food specialties. We go here regularly. Try the Bangkok chicken, or any of the specialty dishes. Also great for lunch.
This is a gem of a restaurant, owned and run by Thai families. The food is excellent, quickly prepared, and the servers are extremely friendly. Very child-friendly environment.
I stop and get something and pay 16 dollars for a small portion
My go-to for Thai in the area!
Always delicious, you canβt go wrong with anything on the menu!!
My wife and I had been wanting to try this place for awhile, and it did not disappoint. Both our meals were great. It's clean and quaint inside. Highly recommend for a go-to spot to get your fix of Thai food.
Great food , anytime, everytime!
We have been coming here for years. Simple, clean with great flavors. Chef and staff are friendly and many options on the menu. We love the Calamari, Pafld Thai...omg their fried rice is so delicious!!! Yum!!!
Nice menu and reasonable prices. I had the basil dish with chicken, which had a delicate flavor and was delicious.
Red curry dish was fantastic. Salad and satay were good also. Definitely a place to come if in the area.
Unfortunately not very good or authentic. The quantities were okay as were the prices, but very far from being real Thai food. Tasted more like ok Chinese food with some Thai flavorings. Most disappointing was their Bangkok wings which was fried chicken with what looked like Sriracha slathered on.. ugh
My family got food poisoning from here. My wife and myself and my little son.
We order the bake chicken(Lunch), Chicken Satay and Pad Thai.
We all shared
Great Customer service and amazing food!
Okay food.. bad service by one of the servers
No fan of paying my own credit card fees. This restaurant makes you pay additional if you use your credit card
My favorite Thai restaurant where the food has been consistently delicious and flavorful for the 12+ years I have been going there. We had the vegetable pad Thai with shrimp and veg fried rice and jerk beef. All dishes were perfect. We arrived after lunch hours and technically they were closed. The chef was kind and generous to still take our order and whip up these delicious items within minutes. True Pro! We truly appreciate his kindness.
Delicious! Loved all 3 things we ordered and can't wait to try more.
Make sure to check your card status after paying here bill was 70 after paying and getting home seen they charged my card 72.52.They added 2.52 for charges as non cash payment. You need to tell your customers in advance about these payment charges. Worst experience. Worst management. Please check your card charges.
I love this place! I had the Pad Thai and it was delicious. One of the best pad Thai dishes I have had. Flavors are rich with a little lime overtone. I enjoyed the service too. A small local shop in total character, which is also one of my favorite things.
I have been here many times, and always have enjoyed it.
By far the best Thai food place I have been too and I've been too plenty in NC, and out of state such as California, NY, and ATL.
If you are looking for AUTHENTIC Thai food and not white washed or not "Americanized" Thai food, this is the place to go to!
I dont recommend getting above level 3 spicy as they start using Ghost Peppers and an Asian like me cannot handle it.
Make sure to check your card status after paying here bill was 60$ after paying and getting home seen they charged my card 71$
Best Thai food in the Triangle. The Red Curry is the great!
Ordered takeout a few weeks ago and the food smelled like fecal matter. Couldn't bring myself to take a single bite.
Very small restaurant with little atmosphere. The server was decent but one of the worst food I've had. Too much fish sauce, not a lot of food compared to most Thai. Not a huge menu.
The fried tofu and masaman curry was delicious! Portions were perfect size and staff was very friendly.
Very tasty. Reasonably priced. Their spicy IS spicy, heat provided by ghost chili for 4+. Would go again.
Service was nice, the lunch was a D-
Out of our party of 4, no one liked what they ordered. We sent one order back for exchange, second plate was also just as bad. All 4 of us, love thai food but no one was happy. they should get a different cook.
when it comes to spice and heat, this restaurant delivers.
I live down east, however, whenever Im in the area (usually for the quality medical care), I stay at the [very clean] Holiday Inn Express on Farrington in Chapel Hill -and I ALWAYS grab a meal (or two) at Bangkok 54. Today it was massaman curry and fried tofu w/chili sauce. And as usual you can count on consistently outstanding flavor. Not over or under spiced, it is fragrant, delicious and comforting⦠and the fried tofu is a great snack. Highly recommend!
I have been tasting Thai food around US for 10 years and Bangkok 54 defintely is the topest among all of them. The curriest and tastes are super authentic and you must try it if you are a Thai food lover around the triangle area. Also I posted the most recent menu for your references.
Service was incredible and the food was great. The Pad Thai was great the shrimp and chicken were just okay. I would use chicken breast for the type of chicken meat and cook the shrimp some other way than boiled. Both did not have much flavor. I will go back again soon.
I got the beef massaman curry and the plate was very nice. Nice curry sauce, nice steak, the rice was good, and the soup. All for the price of 13 with a sweet tea. Nice environment and design. Good service and a good restaurant.
I love spicy food. And when it comes to spicy food, Thai is usually the way to go. Some restaurants (understandably) dial back the heat quite a bit, even when ordering it very hot. And I get it, they don't want customers to be unhappy.
This was my first visit here, going for lunch. The staff was very friendly and understanding at our paced out meal (we were meeting with a friend and wanted to catch up).
We had their fresh rolls and fried pot stickers, both were excellent. The pot stickers were surprisingly large, easily two bites each (compared to most other places where they are barely a bite).
The fresh rolls were just as good, the shrimp tasted fresh and the other fillings were crispy-fresh. The peanut sauce that came with them was excellent.
I had the tom yum soup with shrimp, it was very good. Great balance of flavors. I would love to see that in a bigger portion option (as a meal).
I ordered the basil sauce dish with beef, and asked them for level 5 heat (Their hottest). The waitress cautioned me that it was very hot, and they recommend only a 3 and will gladly bring out the spice dish if I wanted it hotter. I let her know I grow Carolina Reaper peppers, and I promised not to send it back. She nodded and confirmed my selection.
The food came out and it was excellent! Amazing flavors in everyone's dish (no one else tried mine, they aren't into spicy food like I am). The heat in mine was perfect. By the time I finished it all, I had a very light perspiration on the back of my neck and it cleared my sinuses. That's my standard for "hot enough" at a restaurant, and they nailed it.
I'll definitely be going back here again.
My first vist with family. All meals were good. Very layed back and friendly.
The food is amazing, but it's impossible to order ahead, email is slow and the listed phone number is inactive.
Nice atmosphere, good food and service
One of my favorite restaurants! Delicious food, impeccable service--it's the best place around. Love going here for lunch: they are fast, reasonably priced, and serve delicious food. Highly recommend for lunch and dinner.
Fantastic place! Friendly and delicious. Best Green Curry Iβve had.
Great authentic Thai
Food and service were solid.
Drunken noodle with chicken. I've had this dish all over the country. Be careful with the heat. I usually go medium but being as I was out of town I went with a 2 instead of 3. It was hotter than most. Go two less than you normally would. The dish needed more chicken and vegetables. The price was average.
Sooooooo delicious! Don't know why I waited so long to try them!! The basil chicken all the way!
One of my favorite lunch spots to go to with my coworker/friend. The waitresses great and know orders, including modifications, before we even sit down.
I absolutely love this restaurant! It's so delicious! If you love spicy food like me then this is the place for you because they know exactly how to make your meal spicy yet delicious! I highly recommend this restaurant!
The best, best, best Thai food in the Durham/Chapel area. Seriously. There are three Thai restaurants that are closer to me, but I aways go here because the food is great. The staff is really wonderful as well. Favorites are the Pad Thai or the Massaman Curry.
Visited on a trip to see a doctor at the hospital. Chicken fried rice was great!
This is the BEST Thai in the Triangle! I've tried a LOT of places and I am glad found Bangkok 54. The Pad Thai has the perfect balance of savory, sour, sweet and spicy. I'm looking forward to exploring the entire menu. Well, except for the Jumping Squid Salad. I prefer my squid salad to stay put.
Definitely the best Thai restaurant in the area. Pad thai is great and so is fried rice. Have tried many menu items but always go back to those.
We just ate here and it was delicious and the service was first rate. The papaya salad was so fresh and the Tom yum was so good. Others got pad Thai, and a variety of fried rices. We all enjoyed our freshly cooked meal and great service!
Good food at a good price. I liked the steamed dumpling appetizer and the calamari app best.
This was easily the best Pad Thai I have had in the Triangle area! I got mild spicy, but I can tell it would be good either way. Iβm excited to try more on their menu!
I've been going there for more than 5 years now, the service is always consistently good as well as the food fresh and delicious.
I love them. Food so yummy, service good, staff super friendly, everything clean. Highly recommend for everyone.
Went here with my mom to try a new thai place. So glad we did! We had a great experience. The spring rolls were amazing! Service was fast and the waitress was so nice and very attentive. Will definitely be going back.
My favorite Thai place to eat!! Always delicious.
This place is great! Word of warning, they mean it when they say itβs spicy!
Amazing Restaurant, Went their for lunch, and the food was amazing!
We got their special Bangkok 54 spicy chicken curry fried rice and we LOVED it!! It is very spicy for a normal american taste so be careful!! Great service and great food. Try it!!
Simply the BEST!
Great pad thai, and much better than other places I've eaten at in the area. Having lived in NYC for a few years, it's hard to find pad thai that lives up to expectations. Bangkok 54 hit the spot.
Great restaurant!
pad thai was so good!
One of our go-toβs in the area. I get the Pad See Ew, and the food is consistently tasty. Service is always friendly too! The rotee for dessert is always a hit.
Bangkok 54 is an amazing restaurant with great food, service, and decor. The prices and the portions here are incredible. Their entire menu is amazing and full of surprises. A staple when I go here is the chicken satay appetizer which is highly recommended as well as the coconut cake. The chicken fried rice is amazing as well. It is made with jasmine rice and quality chicken. The service is outstanding and they have offered me free drinks(which I declined) just because I had to wait a minute or two on my food. Iβll continue to be a loyal customer and I hope that whoever is reading this will give Bangkok 54 a try.
Too worst spicy levels ... you get to feel only the spice in food rather than other flavors of food.
Outstanding delicious thai food
Great Thai food! Their red curry is SO good! As well, their steamed dumplings and spring rolls are so tasty! Will be coming back to try more!
Love the steamed dumplings. Must order again.
Got the level three spice, currently chasing down a milk truck. Food was delicious and quick for pickup.
Great Thai food.
There is no better Thai. The service is great and the food is absolutely insanely good. Be careful with the heat choice as a level 3 is enough to leave you with hiccups. The waitress always recognizes us and makes us feel very at home. I cannot recommend Bangkok 54 enough!
I live thier salad with peanut dressing, thai chicken fried rice (prefer spice level 2
Completely messed up my pickup order for 5 meals.. I checked after coming home.. I called them back manager said sorry and best i could do is 10% off in next order , after wasting my $$ and time.. Worst customer service..
Very good!
A delightful find I found in BringFido.com. the outdoor seating was good, the service was excellent, and my dog was warmly welcomed. It was my first time here but won't be my last. I had the Pad Thai which was good.
Great customer service and staff was friendly. I disliked the food. The Pad Thai was too watery. And the shrimp tails werenβt peeled.
I had a fried rice. DELICIOUS!!!! Super sweet safe!
Never disappoints!
Love the food but be sure you know what you're about when increasing the spice level! It's truly some tasty Thai food!
Absolutely one of the most amazing Thai restaurants I have ever been to. Been to a lot of them, but this one was soooo goood. Please try this amazing place.
Blessings
I just moved to the area and decided to give this place a try. Iβm so glad I did! The food is EXCELLENT and their takeout service is speedy. Iβll definitely be eating here again.
I think the food was good! However I thought I was a tough guy and ordered my food way too spicy... even after the waitress tried to warn me... Damn... When they say spicy they mean it! I need to go back and try something at a much lower spice level.
Very legit Thai food
Best Thai food in the area
This is my go to spot every other weekend when Iβm in the area. My order is the fresh roll, chicken wings and chicken Pad Thai. The staff is are always very nice and you get a free bottle of water, the food is amazing and is literally one of the best in the area.
Best Pad THAI in the area. Always quick service and staff are always on point. Highly recommend.
Fantastic curries and perfect service every time!
Best Thai restaurant is Durham/Chapel Hill
Good selection of dishes in a cute cafe space.
Decent thai food
Very spicy and very tasty food. Also quite affordable!
Not to be trifled with. The wait staff here was really nice, attentive, friendly, and funny. Our food came out pretty quickly, most of us ordered a 3 out of 5 on the spice scale and were absolutely humbled by the spices, but the food still had an amazing taste underneath the heat. The Thai tea is delicious and the pad thai is probably my favorite pad thai, but I'd recommend getting one spice level below what you think you can handle because woo boy do they know what they're doing with spices. Would definitely recommend if I came back to town!
Drive 20minutes to here. They need us waited to be seated.stand there for around 10 minutes and there was several table available. So, we just left
Waited at door for almost 10 minutes with all the staff saw us and walked by us. Nobody offered us a table. Had to leave.
Best chicken fried rice and the steamed dumplings were pretty good too! Nice sized portions! My friend got the pad thai and Bangkok wings and said they were good too.
Delicious food, reasonably priced.
