Opening its doors in August 2019, Swadist is a Rawat’s family owned restaurant that brings the authentic flavors of Asian cultural heritage to New Jersey. With having experience of over 25 years, we create the finest Indian, Chinese and Thai food.
Swadist is a Sanskrit word, which basically means tasty, delicious, or tasteful. With that meaning, our goal is very straight forward - to give our customer with excellent quality of Swadist food as well as great service. Our chefs prepare food that is true to its roots. At Swadist, our team of chef’s are adept in providing you with versatile multi-cuisine menu selection and to meet with your special needs and requirements. We serve Indian, Chinese and Thai food.
My friends and I recently visited this wonderful place and were truly impressed. The food was exceptional, with the Raj Kachori and Tandoori Shrimp stealing the show – absolutely spot-on flavors! We also tried the Veg Jalfrezi and Indian-style chicken paired with naan bread, and every bite was delightful. The taste and quality exceeded our expectations.
However, there was a minor hiccup with the service. We had to wave our hands to get attention for placing our order, which felt a bit awkward. Despite this, the staff was incredibly polite and generous, making up for the initial inconvenience.
As for drinks, I tried the Virgin Pina Colada, and it instantly became my favorite – highly recommended! To end our meal, we ordered the lava cake. While it was decent, it didn’t quite match the excellence of the main dishes and drinks.
Overall, we had a fantastic experience, and I’d gladly recommend this place to friends and plan to visit again. That said, I’d like some clarity on why gratuity was automatically applied to our bill. From my understanding, gratuity is only added for groups of more than four, and we were just four friends. I’d appreciate a response from the owner on this matter.
Thank you for the great food and ambiance!
I used to order from them a lot but the quality and taste has gone down significantly. I would say it used to be the best Indian food place in jersey but not definitely at bottom. We ordered from Uber eats and we had hair in all food. Their response: will make sure doesn’t happen again next time and don’t care about their customers.
Great northern Indian restaurant in Jersey City , NJ. 5 minutes walk from JSQ PATH station. Service is great but hygiene needs to be improved. It’s spicy. Kebab platter is big & delicious. Parking is on the street, Use @ParkMobile app to pay… free street parking is available at a distance but hard to get.
We came here for dinner on a Sunday night and it was good. We ordered the following:
Raj Kachori Chaat
Chinese Bhel
Chicken Sizzler
Chicken Achari
Overall all the dishes were flavorful and had a spicy kick to the dishes. There was definitely flavor and quantity was be than enough. Will come here again next time. Thank you!
AMAZING FOOD
You can tell they cook with love at this lovely restaurant.
The waiters and staff are so friendly and it was nice to chat with them about their lovely food.
We did the buffet option and MY GOD, every single dish was amazing. Food was fresh, tasty and yummy. Even the desert I wanted to keep eating.
Will definitively come back to try the goat one day.
Swadist deserves all the stars. The food is delicious every time, very friendly staff and nice atmosphere.
Ordered taweli jhinga on ubereats. Very small portion for $15…. The container was not even 1/3rd full. Wont order again
Used to be one of the best Indian restaurants and now it's absolute trash. Worst red curry ever and the rice tastes like it was soaking in a tub for 45 days.
Old review: Great place for delivery. There’s both Indian and Thai options so we can order both and share. The paneer lababdar, chicken tikka masala and panang curry are pretty good.
Place is very good! Reasonable amount of food, and it's delicious.
Lacking the better customer service.
Food is not bad.

Thank you for the great food and ambiance!
Awesome food. We went for dinner. Staff was great
By far the best Indian restaurant in Jersey City. It never misses!
Food is always delicious. My personal favorite Indian spot in JC
I used to order from them a lot but the quality and taste has gone down significantly. I would say it used to be the best Indian food place in jersey but not definitely at bottom. We ordered from Uber eats and we had hair in all food. Their response: will make sure doesn’t happen again next time and don’t care about their customers.
Got Uber Eats delivery for raj kachori and malai soya chaap. The raj kachori is standard, but the malai soya chaap arrived in a box that smells like rancid oil, the chaap seemed to just have been pulled out of the pre-packed container and slathered in spiced yogurt. The onions were raw, not tandoori as described.
Best buffet ever I ate in the states!!!!
Food, people, EVERYTHING IS SO GOOD!! My mom is friends with the owner and hands down this is the best food we’ve tried in journal square!! Screw Vahivab and come here!!
Very tasty Indian food in a no-frills restaurant. Authentic Indian cuisine with a spice level that’s on point. They have the best Sunday lunch buffet.
Good service
If you're looking for authentic Indian food in New Jersey, this is the place to go. The chicken biryani was really good—full of flavor and spices done just right. I also tried the fried rice and chilli chicken. The fried rice was average, but the chilli chicken was excellent. One thing to note: they usually serve plain white rice along with the chilli chicken, and their portions are generous—enough for two people. I recommend checking with them before ordering to avoid over-ordering. Overall, a great spot for authentic Indian cuisine!
Good food good services
I have ordered from them multiple times via uber eats. It’s true high quality food. And the deserts are rich and flavorful. Definitely recommend. Thank you swadist team for many happy meals.
I went to this place today for lunch the food was awesome service peoples are friendly they are cooking the authentic Indian food with love i must recommend this place.its awesome
This restaurant is too good. Food and service is the best and highly recommended.
I really enjoy the food & service. The interior of this restaurant is very nice and welcoming. The service from the moment I walked in was a 10 out of 10 My food was amazing and the pricing was good. I Will definitely be back refer to everybody
I had heard and read a lot about the place but not found the time until today.
It has an extensive menu so we only got through a few dishes but so far brilliant!!
Restaurant is surprisingly quiet but wow the food... Great portion sizes, fresh yet deep in flavour, not too spicy, authentic and really you could find excuses to go multiple times.
I will be back, to try 3 more dishes.
Visited this restaurant yesterday as we are staying closeby on our 2 days trip. Food quality and taste was really good, especially veg manchurian gravy style is awesome and its been quite long time to feel that backhome taste. gulab jam was soft and tasty and i can feel the seriousness of the person who prepared the dough. 😆😀😀.
Overall experience was good! 👍 👍👍👍👍
Worth visiting. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I love the outside of the restaurant- It's what attracted me to come in.
Food was delicious- Shrimp- lamb, and chicken entree amongst us. Very clean inside.
I love indo chinese here. Usually they don’t disappoint. Other food is good as well.
Decent Indian food at reasonable price.
We tried them for catering orders and it was nice.
Very good indian food.
Buffet was great, good food!
Nice food
Buffet was excellent. The food brought happy nostalgic memories. Esp the chowmein Manchurian got me back to streets of Delhi and the gulab Jamun was muaaahhhh! ♡ thank you.
I ordered two orders of lamb in cashew sauce but instead passed off as lamb they gave me beef chunks smh why would they think a person who eats lamb wouldn’t know I been throwing up sick since we ate it.
Food is hands down the best Indian food you can find in Jersey City. Quality and service is great. Love coming back
This is my new go to Indian food spot!
I had another one down the street and their Tikka masala and kadai paneer was so oily. Not here.
Quality of food is on point. Love the dal dishes so much and the breads are so fresh. Even the paneer is soooo good. Great portion size. As others said service is slow even for take out but I’d rather have slow service and great food than the other way around!

Don't remember what all we had but it was delicious. I'd say best in the vicinity. Very well and balance taste, not overly spicy not overly masala it was good. The baked and grill food wqs also perfect. If not for the parking issue I'll just saw be there everytime. Deccan spice, Curry on are miles behind when it comes to the taste.
Another thing, this place is BYOB. What else you want :)
Great food! Great service!
This is a first ... including posting reviews.... I found a roach 🪳 in my dish. You can fill in the rest.
Great India restaurant with authentic taste and an awesome weekend buffet.
Great food. Curries could be hit or miss. Definitely a try restuarant.
Food was just okay. Nothing special and variety was also limited for weekend buffet.
This is authentic indian food. I love almost everything on the menu here!! I spent a good amout of happy hours here with my colleagues.
No more the Swadist it was 3 years ago. I used to rate this high on the list of restaurants in journal Sq area. The last 2 experience have been extermely dis-"tasteful" . This happens when the restaurant starts to take its customers for granted. on both occasion, ordered the chicken/mutton biryani, pretty bland, only think you can taste is the spiciness of the red chili, not the biryani flavors you should have. the chaat was bland and pretty cold. the hariyali chicken takes the cake. Full of green food color, all you could taste is the artificial color. Called it out but the reaction was very cold. The least could have been done is to replace the dish with something else or take off the check. thats the end of my trips to this place and would recommend others to not put their health at risk
We had ordered togo but got so late fighting the traffic that we decided to dine-in. The owner was very accommodating and gave us a table along with plates and fresh cutlery. That was about their amazing customer service. Now coming to the food - We had ordered butter naan and butter chicken. The naan was soft even though it was packed almost an hour ago. And the butter chicken was finger-licking good. Truly the food was Swadist.
Really enjoyed the weekend buffet. Clean, quiet, and ofcourse delicious. Thanks for the great service too 🔥
Very simple place with good food.
Used to order from them often for 3 years untol recently since cooking at home more and also because they won't believe me that they have delivered soggy papadum at least 3 times to me!! Beyond ridiculous. After again soggy papdadum from this Fri so sick of them. I never knew papadum could be soggy until they sent it on 3 different orders.
Walked in at 2:45 for Sunday lunch buffet, didn’t feel rushed, plenty of food.
Went here for lunch with my family to enjoy their weekend buffet. There were a variety of choices and the food was delicious - fresh & tasty! The staff were very friendly, welcoming & accommodating.
The weekend lunch buffet there is excellent. I enjoyed the variety of dishes they offered which were all flavorful, but not too spicy. Additionally, their service was prompt and attentive, making it a great value overall.
Really good food, but one of the worst service..
I has to return my dessert as person brought it out to my table had his fingers in my dessert, and he left it on my table and couldn't care enough, left dirty spoons with milk on it.
Delicious food and good service..
Best Panner Tikka Masala on whole Indian Street
I always order from them and they always make fresh food. The rasmalai is so good must try!
We went about an hour before closing and hoped the food was still fresh, since it was toward the end of the night and we were driving through this town. The place still had a couple customers finishing up their meal. To our surprise the food was super fresh and very tasty. The naan plater was a very good way to experience all the different types of naan/roti they offer. The biryani was excellent. It had a top layer of naan baked onto the top of the dish which you have to cut open and dig in. The butter chicken was on point. Not too thin and not too thick like a dry masala. The amount of food you get for the price is very reasonable. Enough to get full and take the rest home for another meal. The waiter’s service was pleasant and there was an nice old lady there that kept an eye on us (most likely the owner’s relative) she walked over from the kitchen and asked how the food was. Reminded me of my mom when I sit down to eat l, asking how the food was. Very homely ambiance. This shows they really do care about their food quality and get their customers feedback. Definitely a place to frequent when we are around the area.
Food is very delicious and awesome service!!
Thank you!
Every dish delicious. We had goat tonight, it was excellent!
Excellent food, very good taste. Chinese bhel and chili noodles are my fav here, also drums of heaven. Manchurian were ok... But veg momos we asked for fried yet we received steamed but still it was tasty..
Place is clean and big enough. Clean bathroom. Nice service. Sunday buffet is amazing here. With i guess reasonable price. But it's worth it i guess once in a while.
Highly recommended indian or indo chinese food.
Good delicious preparation. I ordered bhuna gosht and Goan shrimp curry. The bhuna gosht was extremely delicious. Though the Goan shrimp curry was nowhere near authentic Goan preparation it was delicious.
Great Curries - we thoroughly enjoyed the goan Shrimp Curry.
The Tandoori Tilapia was so good. Tha Hakka noodles were so spicy and yet just as tasty! Thoroughly enjoyed our experience here.
And the prices are pretty reasonable.
If you're visiting Journal Square, please check this place out.
We had a great experience. The food was very good. The servers were very polite and courteous. The pricing was quite reasonable too. The place was very busy, not only with people dining in but also with takeouts. We would definitely recommend the restaurant to friends and family.
Great find in Jersey. Great food and service.
Top Indian buffet in Journal square!
Incredible, delicious, and huge selection to meet the taste buds of everyone. Best variety of any Indian restaurant, there are so many veggie options, fish and shrimp, and chicken. There's even delicious fruit and desserts. This is a really great deal and experience, I will be going back as often as possible with friends. 🧡💛
Excellent food and service at Swadist! Authentic flavors and warm hospitality make it a must-visit for Indian cuisine lovers.
Great buffet on Saturday!
Très bon restaurant indien de Jersey City avec un buffet délicieux et copieux.
The food was great! It was a recommendation from a friend and it didn’t disappoint. The portions were good for the price, and if you haven’t tried their lamb mughlai parda biryani (the one that they serve covered with naan), you are missing out! Its taste took us by pleasant surprise :).
Great variety of quality food! Love their chicken main. Thai curries are amazing! (Green curry specially) On full capacity days they get a little slow to bring in food but the wait is always worth it!
Amazing Indian restaurant. Great for a takeout but also a nice restaurant for dining in. The weekend lunch buffet is back. $19.99 for adults and $9.99 for under 10 years old. The lunch buffet selection is amazing: naan, roti, chili fish, veg byriani, shrimp masala and of course tandoori chicken among many more. The desert gulab jamun was the best I ever had. Absolutely delicious. I highly recommend Swadist
From a Vegetarian's view point, review based on dining experience - Dec29,2023 !! -
Best food in Jersey City. While everything on the menu is very delicious, I loved Soya Chaap Masala as it is similar to how it is served in Delhi. Also the staff is very polite and humble and they listen to your requirements and you get what you need (I believe the staff should be happy as they are key to a good experience).
Overall 5/5 for food and atmosphere
I tried the buffet in here. It was awesome, got lot of varieties including salads.
One of the best Indian Chinese and Thai continental food options in NJ town and food quality is amazing and highly recommended for anyone who is looking for best taste food.Ambience is too good and only problem we had noticed is restaurant is not spacious and parking is limited as street parking in Newark avenue. It’s better to order to go than dine in option. Prices were little higher than other food places in that area
Food is terrific here. Service is slow more because the rush is too high. Atmosphere is generic.
Good taste, good quality and huge quantity.
All the dishes that I tried were surprisingly delicious.
Traditional Indian and indo Chinese fusion.
Except malai kofta wasn't subpar compared to other dishes I tried.
Shahi tukda was yummy.
They have a weekend all you can eat.
Ambiance was alright.
I'd recommend if you're looking for good Indian food in the area.
Ordered malai chicken, veg noodles and chicken fried rice for our party . It was so delicious , guests enjoyed a lot .
My second time here. Had the Chinese last time and tried the Indian today. Food and staff are absolutely fantastic.
The food is good from what I had order, but I went there in 3 different occasions before there 3pm lunch, meaning they won't serve you you can only order buffet, but they sit you down and ignore you until you asked and they when can you order and they said is closed! If they close at 3 or 3:25 but you go at 2:30 they still won't service you.! Not kool! Won't go there anymore.
Always beyond the expectations.Food was very tasty. Staff is very very good as it is family owned business they take care of all your needs. I wish I can give 10 stars !!!
Went there for dinner after almost a year, food quality and service has remained good.
Very decent Indian cuisine. Strongly recommend Baby goat masala and garlic naan.
Food was stale felt like frozen food
Amazing restaurant, Best food and service.
Soya malai chaap and shahi tukda is a must-try
I hardly got any pickup orders on time. The food is good but the pickup service is too bad to make everything about this horrible. Posting this review from Swadist because they made me wait for the food that should have been ready 28 mins earlier. And this is not the first time this has happened to me.
Delivery was 2 hours. Food was cold. Disappointing experience.
I ordered a delivery for dinner from Uber Eats.
The packaging and portion size was good. The taste was not that great.
My favourite restaurant in JC. Drums of heaven and paneer sholay are the best!
We went there for lunch on a Saturday, and saw they had a lunch buffet. Food and service were good. The only issue that I would have is that they added gratuity to the bill. I might have left that amount or more, but adding gratuity for the party of 4 just seemed strange.
Wonderful place, staff, and food
Worst food plus staffs are very rude
Best restaurant in jersey city
Best Indian restaurant in Indian Street. Best food and best service. Highly recommended
Best food best service.. must go best Indian and indo-Chinese food in the area..
I came to Swadist with my friends for the first time. Lots of my friends and family recommended me this restaurant. The food is outstanding, we ordered chicken tikka masala - must try. We also ordered saag paneer , dal makhani with garlic and butter naan. Everything was so good. The service was also excellent. We will definitely come back.
Impeccable service and a must-visit for both enthusiasts and newcomers seeking a delightful fusion of food, culture, and hospitality.
This restaurant offered us an unforgettable dining experience with their warm hospitality and elegant ambiance blending tradition and modernity.
The staff was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and eager to make recommendations based on our preferences. They took great care to ensure our dining experience was flawless.
One standout was the buttery, Malai Chicken Tikka, which melted in my mouth.
We recently went here with family and the whole experience was terrible. I would give them 0 stars for the terrible food, bad service and horrible management. There was a large group of loud obnoxious alcoholics group sitting with 3 bottles of glenlivet and screaming loudly the whole time we were there. It was not a friendly dinner atmosphere and we didn’t feel safe sitting with our children.
Food is good but business running on considerations!!
They charge 15% gratuity in buffet without mentioning it anywhere.
Owner said “she think she wrote somewhere”
She explains that every restaurant charge gratuity, sounds very childish.
The food is delicious and authentic. The menu is extensive with a large number of dishes. The weekend buffet is excellent, especially for the price. Copious amounts of a tasty selection of dishes. It's one of our regular places to visit.
Very good Indian cuisine. Made fresh. Very professional and friendly staff.
Food and services are too amazing.
Went for lunch with a friend. The food was delicious, and the service was very attentive and pleasant. Food is prepared fresh, so there is a wait time.
Apps, we ordered peanut masala and roasted pappad. Great .
Main course, we ordered half tandoori chicken. This was superb. Also, ordered baingan mirchi ka saalan along with garlic naan and roti.
I will certainly visit again to try different options.
The lunch buffet is absolutely not good and not worth the price
Food was good.
Just ok - the biryani is not mughlai, but hyderabadi. Also, they use boneless chicken for their biryani, which should be a crime 🤦🏻♀️
The food was delicious. Ordered Baby Goat Masala, Chili Garlic Naan & Cheese Naan. For beverage I had Masala Lemon Soda which is a must try. Chili Garlic Naan is a must try as well. The service is quite slow, had to wait for more than half hour for food.
Achari Tikka is awesome. Ajay was very accommodating and well informed about the food. He is amazing
The food taste is not consistent so you gotta owe guesssing how’s it this time. At least for laal maas I can say it has become from good to pathetic. Some times it doesn’t even taste like it. I don’t know how they can be so off.
Great food and good portions.
Food was amazing. Must try hot &sour soup, paneer ke Shola, malai soya chap and pista kulfi faluda! Manchurian and dahi bhalla were not that great but I am definitely going back again and gonna try different dishes.
An amazing restaurant for enjoying authentic Indian cuisine. Could do better and investment to make the ambiance more appealing. Ordered Malai Chicken Tikka and vegetable jalfreezi. Both the dishes were really good with perfect spice and flavors. Also, try their refreshing masala lemonade. And it’s BYOB.
I would certainly recommend them.
F..K me this place is the most tasty Indian Food I have ever eaten. The Chicken Tikka and Okra Bhindi - was so amazing. And the paneer kebobs with vegetables were out of this world. Honestly, I'm sad I only discovered this restaurant tonight!
Thank you. Food was really awesome. That you Ajay for your service. Really appreciate.
The food was delicious and Ajay our waiter was exceptional.
Food is delicious for some sector of people. Ajay service is very good.
Great food, great service. Will be a regular customer.
