Modest eatery featuring traditional Thai & Chinese cuisine, with takeout options.
Today we went to Sam Thai for the first time. The service was wonderful! We had fresh vegetable spring rolls, green curry, and pad Thai. We both agreed it was the best Thai that we’d ever had. I also had the most wonderful cup of hot tea. I highly recommend this establishment and I’m looking forward to going back.
Oh! One more thing, I think it’s worth noting, my dining companion does not like spicy food at all and the pad Thai he had accommodated his taste preference without sacrificing flavor.
My meal was an American 3 on a scale of 0 - melt-your-face-off Thai 10. It was just enough spice for my cheeks to get rosy. Just perfect.
OMGosh!!!! The spring rolls and Tom Yum are soooo delicious! I will be back. I've already told 3 people about this during my meal 😉 The owner Sam is so delightful. I had the pleasure of eating inside as it is posted as pickup only between the times of 11-1:30pm and 4pm until ? He allows a group of 4 or less to eat inside at times. He offered this when I told him I was in the parking lot. Do NOT miss this place! The food is fresh. The spring roll sauce is homemade. A+++
He said pick up in an hour. 30 minutes later he calls and says food is ready for pick up. We live 20 minutes away. Everything was bland. Not a drop of seasoning on anything. We had heard great things about this place but were so disappointed. Don’t waste your time or money on this place.
This is our first time trying Sam Thai Cuisine and was not dissapointed. The Thai pork won ton and Thai spicy chicken appetizer are exceptional and worth a try. We kept our spicy level at 6 out of 10 and it hit the spot if you like spicy food without burning your taste buds. The other highlight dish is the steak laab.
99% is takeout. We have dined in once, and I'm pretty sure we were the first in quite a while to do so. Food is FANTASTIC and the owner is super nice.
I had a Thai cuisine itch that needed scratching and landed on Sam's for the first time, to satisfy that need. A few things worth noting....this is take-out ONLY and 3rd party delivery is not an option. I recommend calling ahead to place your order otherwise wait times can be extremely long (one hour +). The restaurant is only open 5 days a week and only for limited hours during lunch and dinner so plan accordingly. Lastly, pay attention to the spice levels described in the menu. Anything on the Thai side of spice (6+) will pack some punch so choose wisely. The food itself is very aromatic and flavorful. I was pleased with the generous portion of each dish, in particular the quantity of meat. You definitely get your money's worth. Since this is take-out only, I feel it's worth mentioning that the containers they use do a great job of keeping food hot, despite a 20 minute drive home. Thanks for scratching my itch Sam. I'll definitely be back!

Sooooo yummy!!!
Amazing pad Thai!
Perfect pad Thai and eggrolls. Fast service also.

My favorite type of restaurant. Out of the way, independent, and great food.
Food was excellent, best Pad Thai I have ever eaten. Service was incredible. 11/10, highly recommend.

Best traditional Thai food around. Anybody saying anything else is either lying or they don't know good Thai food.
Our house LOVES Sam Thai! The service is wonderful and they always put a smile on our face as well! The Pad Thai is our go-to!
My partner Azul and I just ordered take away from Sams. It is the best Asian dinner I have had in years. What a treasure to have in our area.
Authentic Thai! Yum!
Amazing meal. Mr Lam is amazing, and the food was great.
Yummie pad Thai. love it.
Me and my husband got dinner here tonight and it was amazing ❤️ we will be back!

Haven’t been here in a long time and picked it up last nite. Highly recommend! All dishes we got were fresh and delicious! My daughter has celiac and sam said anything on the menu can be gluten free, she loved the chicken and broccoli and he even packaged it separately to ensure it was safe for her. Highly recommend! Just a note it is only takeout.
First time eating at Sam Thai Cuisine. I will be back. I am gluten, dairy and soy-free and Sam took great care of me!
Pad keemao was too good. Can use less oil on fried rice. Last time we felt rice was undercooked and that can be improved
Fantastic food! Wonderful owner, so friendly, quick and always has a smile on his face. Best Thai food ever!
Such good food, service & prices!! We will definitely eat here again!!
I love the chicken pad Thai number 8 spiciness!
Excellent Pad Thai and Green Papaya Salad. Will be back soon! (Takeout only)

Lovely thai takeout place! I called around 4:15pm to place my order for 6:15pm. I did level 3 spicy, but might move up to level 4 or 5 next time. Thanks for the "American Spicy" scale for those of us who had to learn the hard way that "Thai mild" is pretty spicy!
The food was pretty good overall. My son said the sesame chicken was a 5 out of 10 in flavor, a 2 out of 10 on crispiness, and an 7 out of 10 on the chicken itself. He said he enjoyed it, but would definitely try something else next time. The cream cheese wontons were pretty standard. My daughter liked her pad thai. I had the pad pak with chicken and really enjoyed it. It's a great alternative for a healthy meal from a Thai restaurant.
Delicious & fresh!
Their service is great, and the food is consistently good!
It was alright, but I was expecting much better based on the reviews and how busy they always were.
My favorite dishes are the Pad Prik King and the pad king.
All I can say is that food is cooked by an actual Thai Chef and the Pad Thai is actually real Pad Thai. Both are hard to find. Flavor wise, much better than Amazing Thailand.
I LOVE this place. I get cravings and have to go back often. Their Thai Fried Rice is the best I've ever had. Also love Pad Prik King and Pad Thai. Everything I've tried has been good though. Definitely recommend.
Disappointed. Not as flavorful as I’d hoped. Missing key Thai ingredients for example no tamarind in papaya salad or toasted rice in larb. Larb was wet instead of fluffy. The spring rolls were not neatly formed, nor did they taste good and over priced.
Really good food. Friendly staff.
Sam is amazing, and so is his food! So so kind, great recommendations, and everything we tried was amazing, so we keep going back for more. Pad see ew, dumplings, egg rolls, fried rice, something-king, all great - spicy 6 is our go-to level, 7 if we are feeling brave.
Sam never disappoints. Food is awesome and no matter how large the order, it is correct everytime!
It was ok disappointed that they don't serve chow mein
Delicious authentic Thai cuisine. Fast service. Friendly staff. Veges, prawns and chicken perfectly cooked. Even took the tails off the prawns for me when I asked if they had them without tails.
Consistently awesome food!
Excellent service and balance of flavors necessary for good Thai food.
My family loves Sam Thai! The owners are fantastic and customer-oriented. My mom doesn't like veggies and Sam always remembers when she orders and makes her order perfectly. My sister swears by the pineapple fried rice. The Massamun curry was a little light on potatoes, but otherwise delicious.
Amazing Pad Thai! Consistently delicious. Sam always uses very fresh ingredients. Large portions too.
Totally inedible.Chicken chow mein was under cooked and soaking in water. And the egg foo young was just cabbage very little egg with no gravy to speak of. Will never eat there again. Wasted $50 and threw it in the trash after 1 bite of each.
It’s a nice small restaurant with fantastic food. I love how you can customize how spicy you would like it - and they WILL make it spicy! Plus Sam is awesome - very friendly and a great sense of humor. So glad we found this place.
Food was flavorless and dry. When I paid for it the total was $40.00, my bank showed a charge of $40.00. When the transaction went through a couple of days later it showed the actual amount paid was $55.00. They actually went in and charged us more for it after we left. I signed off on a $40.00 charge and they would not give me a receipt. This place has shady business practices an terrible food.
Everything made from scratch. absolutely the best Thai food I've ever eaten. Worth the drive!
Delicious high quality food! I will never stop to come back.
Best Pad Thai around! Always makes my dish extra spicy too which I love!
Good foods lil expensive!!
Very good food, upset about it being only 5 days a week but can't complian at all.
Fantastic place! Sam is a genuinely kind hearted individual. He takes time during the year every year and closes his business so he can visit back home. Highly, highly recommend.
Live this place, the food is amazing, and the staff is friendly.
Amazing Thai food. Even though there is a Chinese menu offered, stick with the Thai. It is a long wait, but to me, worth it for authentic Thai food. I tend to order ahead, and it is still hot after my 15 minute drive home. For those who have said it was bland or takes too long, I have been eating here for 10 years and have never regretted any dish I've ordered, it's real, it's fresh made and this is not a chain restaurant
Sam is the kindest and most caring person, and it shows every time I visit. He knows my family by name and comes to sit with us if it is not too busy. The foods is wonderful. It's a small shop, but they do a lot of takeout. Get there at an off time for a real treat. That Thai iced tea on a hot summer day? Yes, please! Everything is made fresh; you'll taste the care in every bite! I hope to see you there!
Best Thai food in the Twin Cities!!! Hands Down! Been going for 10 years and Sam has still got it. Thanks!
Their customer service was good, but when I got my chicken lo mein it was very bland. Little to no flavor, and their was only celery. When it said mixed with "vegetables"
I sat here foreverrrrrrrrrrrr when the place was almost empty. Do the have an armless cook? I aged 10 years waiting for fried rice. Never will come back. A little wait is fine.....seemed like 45 minutes.
When we got there the place was empty but it took us 50 minutes to get our food. Food has good flavor but not worth the wait. My dinner had only a very small amount of chicken in it. We got there at 4:10 on a Saturday evening
Overpriced. Curry was watery like soup. We asked for soy sauce for our white rice with sweet and sour chicken (for a kid) and the owner gave my kids a lecture on how soy sauce is bad for them. I appreciate your concern, but no.
I'll just go to Thai Street Market from now on. There is really no comparison. Better food for half the price.
Excellent food. Sam is amazing and caters to each customer. Highly recommend!!!
It's become more self service, lost its unique feeling.
My family and I go there when we are craving great food. Sam is always friendly and welcoming and has, on a few times, treated us to complimentary deserts when there were sudden rushes in the restaurant or if we were celebrating some special occasion. I highly suggest the Rad Na and Green Curry. Also, the Thai tea is delectable.
342 with chicken on level 4 spice is great. 341, chkn, lvl 5 is good also, but recommend lvl 6 or higher. The coconut milk cancels out the spicy hotness.
Always fantastic
I love the thai green curry with chicken
Generic panda express, everything was too sweet and not authentic thai or chinese food. Gross foos
Sam is always very happy, and the service is not always the fastest good food takes time so i just call my order in The pinnapple fried is my go to.
My favorite restaurant to order from, food is wonderful.
The Pad Thai is delightful. Arguably, the best on this side of town. My suggestion would be to take it to go. The noodles soak up all that delicious sauce by the time you get it home and it really enhances the flavor.
Best Thai food around!!!! Sam is a hoot and super friendly
Owner tries to help people to get what they like ... the first time wasnt very spicey but he remembers and he always excites my taste buds ...
Always awesome the owner is incredible and will help you find just what hits the spot
Tiny little place with spectacular food. Sam has been in this location for a long time. Going there is always a joy.
I'm not sure why this place has such great reviews, but I really regret going. I ordered the green curry after discussing with the waiter. Despite telling him that I liked spicy, it was watery and flavorless. My companion had the Tom Yum soup, which was also not to her liking.
The prices were also very high with no lunch portion option. The service was VERY slow despite being the first table seated after opening. I didn't take my leftovers because I was so disappointed... I hate wasting food. There are many other Asian restaurants out there that do a better job, so I'll be visiting those in the future.
Great Food. Every time I have ordered food for take out it has been fantastic and the owner is friendly and enthusiastic about his craft-
Got the sesame chicken looked and tastes very good. Very similar to the Orange chicken at some other Chinese places, I would go again though.
Great food, served at whatever spice level you would like. Nice cozy place. Will be back again.
One of the best Thai Food Restaurants in white bear lake.
Great food, owner always there and takes your order and brings your food. He is very attentive and friendly. We LOVE this place. It's small but clean and very pleasant. Best Thai food I've ever had and and I've tried a lot of places!
I dined here last night and it was my first time there. I had my young nephew with me who is a frequent flier. The Kung Pao chicken was the very best I've ever had. The Pad Thai with beef and shrimp was phenomenal. The shrimp and beef were prepared perfectly and not greasy (as one reviewer wrote). Sam was very friendly and creates a fun atmosphere with his conversation. Outstanding and would highly recommend and we will definitely be back.
Won't find a better tasting restaurant for Thai!
Really enjoyed the Pad Thai. Got it with scallops which were cooked well and were large scallops. The sauce/seasoning was really good in my opinion. Much better than some Thai places I've had it before. Portion size was pretty spot on. Certainly not too little or too much that you're forced to have left overs or throw it away. I'd go back.
Love the low carb noodles. Sam will make your food at the spice level you like. It is not always fast but the food is always great.
Ok
Wow... people have become very confused as to what Thai food is. Or, I suppose, never understood it in the first place (rather like any style of Chinese if eaten most places in the US).
Pad Thai is not a spicy dish. It can certainly be ordered so and no one, Sam included, will refuse. His Pad Thai cooked to head-sweating level is quite good. But it's a mild dish, and chili pepper -- in any quantity -- is not a core ingredient. It's also served in a very thin sauce. It's more of a noodle soup with very little broth than some sort of Thai version of an Italian dish.
His green curry is also splendid and, as is typical of Thai curries, very close to water in consistency. Complaining that a Thai curry is runny is akin to complaining that a potato dish is too starchy.
There are a large number of Thai-ish restaurants in the Twin Cities that serve delightful food, creatively adapted from Thai food. It's rather unfair to complain about one of them serving Thai food, even it it's somewhat unexpected in a little shopping area along 61 in White Bear Lake. Maybe that's the problem. Unexpected and not in Uptown or on Grand Avenue = bad?
Again, a love the stuff that's served at most of the Thai-inspired restaurants in town. Thai food is a great foundation for adaptation and experimentation. I'm very glad I have the opportunity to eat the real thing when I feel like it as well, though.
We didn't know what we wanted to eat so Sam asked us what we liked and he surprised us with what he thought we would like! He did it spot on! Delicious food and fabulous service! And he kept pea pods out of my dish....Thanks Sam!
Excellent array of Thai and Chinese dishes. A red curry dish with many vegetable and tofu and Pad Thai with shrimp were both delicious. Very limited seating; Sam Thai does, however, do a robust take out business. Well worth a visit.
Great good, great service!! I got the pad thai and it was awesome. I was greeted right away coming in and had a drink at my table a few seconds later. I’m excited to eat here when I start at century college in the fall.
อาหารที่ทานง่ายๆทั้งเด็ก ผู้ใหญ่ อร่อยและสะอาด
The man (I presume the owner) who took my order graciously allowed me to pickup 30 minutes after their official close of business as I placed an order a couple hours prior. However we had a communication mix-up where he heard my "chicken pad thai, medium spice" as "chicken satay". His read-back even sounded like "chicken pad-tay" but the medium spice should have caused some pause on his part and I thought he pronounced thai as tay. Regardless, I have close friends whose second language is english so I understand a mixup like this is possible. The issue became with how he handled when I called back. Basically he said he can't give me a credit for the correct dish because I paid for and received the wrong dish. I find it surprising they would choose to err in their favor for a cash order instead of offering to correct the mixup; had they credited the missing dish, I would have tried it again and ordered more on my return, but now I'll never go back.
As far as food goes, it's unimpressive. I recall eating a buffet there years ago and the american chinese food was good enough. However, the Thai food is very weak. The red curry is watery, not strong and includes vegetables I don't associate with thai/curry dishes like green beans. Egg rolls were very small/skinny, not fat and stuffed full of fresh ingredients like most thai restaurants. Chicken satay was dry, but the peanut sauce was good enough to make it worth finishing (luckily since I paid for it even though I didn't order it). I'm glad I didn't find the food good enough to go back since I won't out of principal. If you're in White Bear and want Thai, go to Ban Thai which is pretty good. For the BEST Thai in the area, New Bangkok in Forest Lake is worth the drive as it's as authentic and consistently as delicious as the best options on University Ave.
Best Thai food I've had anywhere. Owner is great and very nice
Great, small, local Thai. Carefull on the spice # 1 - 10 !!!
Great food and service! Thai and Chinese menu, I've dined in and done take out both great experiences.
Outstanding food and service
Great food and service, ordered several different dishes and all we're enjoyed. Boys are very picky so any place they like we will return.
Chicken Pad Thai Delicious! Not Greasy.
good food great value, authentic
Excellent thai food - my husband loves the pad prew wan, I love the traditional pad thai.
Great ownership. Local favorite. I always get the pork pad Thai level 4. Make accommodations if you don’t want something in it. Highly recommend
Sam is a wonderful and delightful man. When I lived here years ago (it had a different name) but Sam was always there welcoming you in and taking care of ya. I came 2x a week for a year, before moving away, but still make it a point to stop by anytime I'm in the area. Chicken Pag Prik extra spicy...my favorite. Never had a disappointment in the 6yrs I've eaten here.
Always good service and wonderful food. Their vegetable fried rice is like no other.
Best Pad Thai in the state!! Sam is such a kind person and is extremely accommodating. Great food.
Ordered Pad Thai with chicken and the taste was good but it was soooooo greasy! I couldn't even finish it because it felt like i was just eating oil. The chicken was so thinly sliced I felt like there was barely any in there. I paid $25 for 2 orders and felt that was overly priced for what I actually got. Noodles some sprouts and 2 green onions with thin chicken on the side. Will never be ordering here again!
The only Thai restaurant I eat at!
Fresh vegetables, great taste. Wonderful, friendly service.
I won't give this a 1-star for the chicken chow mein that consisted solely of celery, thin lunchmeat-style chicken and sauce, simply because the egg foo yung was superb, but I definitely would not order the chow mein!
The Pad Thai with shrimp and medium Thai heat was delicious! Be sure to check it out!
My wife and I love the food there it's excellent,
Sam Thai has the best Thai food around. Also the owner Sam, is super nice!
Great food and atmosphere
It's authentic yummy food!
I've visited this place two times in the past month for lunch. Its some of the best pad thai around. I would recommend it! The gentleman behind the counter is always fun to chat with. Next time you're in WBL, order some pad thai. Its worth it!
I've eaten Thai from here to Thailand and every thai resurant in the atate of Minnesota I can tell you it gets no better then this place. Wanna try something fun ? Not sure what you want ? Sam cam go through his ingredients top to bottom and create a dish you will love. Wanna cook ThaI at home Sam gives great pointers and places to find the needed ingredients. Food for the soul made with love and the heart shaped sticky rice proves it
Terrific food!
Great atmosphere, great food, fresh vegetables, great tastes. 343 with 6 spice.
Excellent service and awesome food.
Rock solid Thai food. Eaten there for years and have never had a bad experience.
Oddly great for white bear food. I wouldnt say it is better than Twin Cities Thai food, but there are some items that are very good. #341 is amazing. Spring rolls are under par.
I ordered Beef Laab, Sweet Green Curry and Pa-Nang to go. All three were excellent! It cost $36.00 with tax and was worth every penny. I love Thai and appreciated that it was accurately spiced as ordered.
I work next door to Sam Thai so I always get food there once a week or so. The Pad Thai is delicious! One of my favorites! Sam is pretty awesome. He knows me by name, just when I call to place an order. Free goodies here and there doesn't hurt either. I would definitely go to Sam Thai for great food and a wonderful experience.
Amazing everything. Don't listen to any of the 1 star reviews, those people are idiots. The pad thai is next level.
I like that you can pick the spice level. I got an 8 spice level & it was really spicy which I love. The prices are high for the amount of food you get. Didn't really like the egg rolls but I'd probably give it a try again.
Sam is the nicest fellow, and his food is the best I have ever had! Everything we have tried is stunningly delicious. You can order as mild or as spicy as you like. Great restaurant!
The Pad Thai is excellent! The lunch buffet is also very good. This is a lunchtime favorite of mine.
Google users, c'mon! 3.5 stars?!? I picture the "kitchen" of this excuse for a restaurant is just a bunch of can openers for ingredients, scissors to open packets of dried sauces, and freezers of below average food stuffs. Had the pad Thai, panang curry, wings and egg rolls; all not good at all.
Excellent food and really nice people.!!
The people on here who say this isn't authentic have never had real Thai food. Sam does an incredible job in his small space and I know for a fact he uses high quality, fresh ingredients. I eat here at least once a week, and it is always the highlight lunch of my week. The portions are always enough to get two or three meals. Not to mention, Sam is a great guy and an excellent business person. If you come often he will remember your name and give you some free goodies now and then. I have always had an excellent experience.
Everytime I go to Sam I have a really great experience. Not only is the food there amazing, but Sam is a really nice, funny, and welcoming guy! Definitely my go-to Thai restaurant!
Great place for Thai. Great service and amazing food.
Sam is the nicest owner I have ever met! He seems genuinely interested in you not only as a customer, but as a human being. Best food I've ever had, hands down. The flavors and the spices, mixed together, truly give your taste buds a wonderful, tantalizing experience!! I would recommend the Pad Khing, the ginger is delicious!
Wow .. was looking for a Thai restaurant near me .. Hate Giving BAD Reviews .. But I JUST had too!
Were to start .. The food was horrible ! The Restaurant didn't look very clean.
We ordered: Red and Green Curry it was VERY watery and with no flavor, OMG it was bad. Very SAD!
Also had the chicken satay .. it had good flavor, however way over cooked! and dry! - The peanut sauce that came with was bland. Rice was over cooked. Sorry Guys! Big Fail! Will Not Be Going Back :(
Nice little Thai/Chinese restaurant with limited seating. I had the Panang Curry and having eaten a lot of Thai food I thought it was average. My wife had some Chinese food and while it was tasty it must have had some MSG in it as we got a little headache later.
I will try it again and see if it was just an off day by the cook.
