Modest strip-mall eatery dishing up stir-fries, salads, noodle soups & other Asian eats.
Sweet Basil Thai Restaurant didn’t quite hit the mark for us, but we understand that taste is subjective. Growing up with Southeast Asian flavors, we have a certain expectation for balance and depth, which we didn’t quite find here. What really took away from the experience, though, were the sticky condiment bottles and an unclean bathroom—details that made the visit unpleasant.
Very chill environment and pleasant music selection. The food was prepared timely and tasted great. My server Tyler was amazing, excellent customer service, and very kind (he should get a raise). Good vibes, good food, and a nice and calm atmosphere… what more can I ask for haha.
This place has some of the best Spring Rolls I’ve ever had. They are so tasty, light, and refreshing! And the peanut sauce?! I always have to get two because it’s so good. I love trying new entree items from Sweet Basil but their combo Rahd Nah remains my favorite. The stir fry was decent but I wouldn’t order it again. I’ve also tried their sesame chicken, which was different than what I expected but was still very good! I’d definitely order it again. The staff is very pleasant as well.
My husband and I went here for the first time yesterday for my birthday. We read the reviews first before going and seeing that it was rated a 4.3 star, we thought it would be worth it to give it a try. The minute we walked in we were not greeted until a few minutes later. The spot we chose to sit at was dirty. I was served water that had something floating in the cup. My husband's glass cup had a strand of hair on the outside of it. The food was tasteful but not the greatest. We also didn't get any water refills until the end when we were about to leave already. Safe to say we won't be returning.
Sweet Basil used to be my go-to for Thai food, but their service and quality have gone down hill. I placed an online order for pick up. The sweet and sour chicken was hard and looked liked it was just warmed up frozen nuggets. The sauce seemed to be no better than what comes in a jar. And the curry. I was looking forward to my mild chicken massaman curry that I waited for while they “finished my order.” When I got home I was disappointed to find hot shrimp curry that even my husband, who loves shrimp and spice, couldn’t eat as it was so spicy. I called back to tell them what happened and ask for a refund on the curry. Nothing. I called twice more and finally gave up. I’m now looking for a new place to try…
Second time ordering from them & decided to try new items. I was very disappointed. I paid $14 for pad Thai & the portion was small for the price compared to other places. The sticky rice wasn't even filled halfway. I had to give the entire portion to my son because it wasn't even enough for 2 people. The sticky rice was also hard, it seemed like it was left out uncovered for a while then microwaved when I came to pick it up. The spring rolls weren't even spring rolls. They were more like lettuce rolls. The papaya salad had the same amount of shredded carrots as it did green papaya. This place is pricey for how little of a portion you get. The only good item on their menu is the chicken wings.
The food is always of good quality, service is the best.
Update 2025-
Shortly after discovering this place, my S/O at the time had a bunch of dietary restrictions imposed, which meant I didn't eat here for a number of years, until recently.
It is, unfortunately, not as good as I remember. At all. The pricing versus portion size is a bit on the expensive end, but that could just be me being out of touch with how expensive eating out is in 2025. I received tofu instead of chicken in a recent order and it was rather awful -- and I enjoy tofu!
The food's still tasty, service is still great, but I'd take it down a half step below "nice casual sit-down restaurant" quality, but still above the likes of Leeann Chin.
----
I've made the mistake of not going here for the 10+ years I've lived nearby. What a little gem of a restaurant.
Pros:
- The staff is obscenely friendly
- Shrimp pad thai was delicious
- Pad Thai to go was moist and loose, instead of the very common dry and smashed/compacted into the tray
- Beef mekong curry was delicious
- Fair pricing!
Cons:
- Location. This place is weirdly tucked into a corner with little to no parking near the front door.
- Spice levels are "white people spicy" -- you can choose 1 through 5, we chose 3 not knowing what scale they use, and there was little to no heat in the dishes. Our 3s were below what I consider mild, we'll be ordering 5s next time!

Absolutely delicious food!! Prompt friendly service. We loved our lunch here!
Great food, nice employees. Relatively fast service.
The food is the stuff of cravings!
First time, kept it simple with Potstickers and Chicken fried rice. Amazing! Potstickers are made properly and fresh! So much chicken in the chicken fried rice, big pieces, it’s delicious!

Pad thai and drunken noodles tasted great, but the portions were small for the price, which should've been clear when I saw they were charging $3.00-$3.50 for 1 small egg roll.
Food was a 10-10 all day everything was cooked to perfection and pretty damn good prices to!!service was amazing
good food
The Pad Thai is the best I've had.
Amazing place and the sweetest staff
Delicious!
Delicious food, especially the lo mein. Not so greasy like other Chinese/Thai restaurants. Very nice staff. The restaurant cares about good customer service and making great food. This has become my regular take out spot.
Food is too oily.

I've returned back here and the quality has gone back up and the owner and workers are extremely friendly. I definitely recommend it if it's close in your area!
Fantastic food for sure! I heavily recommend the beef pad thai and egg rolls. You will NOT be disappointed!
Lack of trust in customer service and poor service. Food was alright.
Best pad Thai in town
What a joke of a place. Its a “seat yourself” type deal. Sat our selves, waited 15minutes with no one helping us or even acknowledging us. Lol what a joke. Understaffed, and your typical poorly run asian restaurant. Avoid at all cost.
Great food, service and atmospere are always fantastic,
We ordered Pad Thai, Jungle curry, and a couple of stir fry dishes. We liked all of them! The flavors were complex and the food was fresh. The service was attentive and upbeat. We had a great time for a family get-together and will return when we can!
Ordered sweet n sour chicken w/fried rice. My wife ordered Sweet Basil noodles. My chicken was very good , but didn't like the sauce. The fried rice was tastless. The noodles in the Sweet Basil noodles were very spicy, not mentioned in description. Had Sriracha in it. Noodles had no flavor. Also ordered egg rolls. Did not like them or the sauce they came with. Ordered Diet Coke. Not much more then colored water. Our waitress, Adrianna, was fantastic.
$50 for two people, a bit privy especially for the poor quality of food. Just don't see us going back there!
Love their cooking!! Great food with great flavors
So good!
Yum!!! Great lunch specials!
I enjoyed the food we ordered the sampler. Everything was good, ordered the sweet basil noodles level 3 heat great flavor good food.
A real gem of a restaurant. As our regular favorite Vietnamese restaurant was not available, a quick search showed we were near to Sweet Basil here in Brooklyn Park.
Our experience was far better than we imagined.
The service was exemplified by helpful suggestions, an upscale restaurant's feel and appearance.
Delicious Mango spring rolls and Szechuan dumplings served with beautifully matched sauces were followed by a bowl of remarkably tasty Pho and Pad Thai.
Our server was quick, efficient, and personable. White cloth tables perfectly set off one of the finer food presentations I've experienced.
Toward the end of our meal we snacked on complimentary Thai fortune cookies and chatted for quite some time. We both remarked that this is a great place for a date, even if it didn't start that way we left feeling as if it were.
Sweet Basil is certainly a place you will enjoy.
I love this place I found this hidden gem in 2010 and the food has been wonderful every time I come in!
I ordered the mango spring rolls and chicken Tai basil. Both were excellent. I am definitely going back.
Very chill environment and pleasant music selection. The food was prepared timely and tasted great. My server Tyler was amazing, excellent customer service, and very kind (he should get a raise). Good vibes, good food, and a nice and calm atmosphere… what more can I ask for haha.
Outstanding!
The food doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be.
Food and service was excellent. I’m eating my leftovers as I write this review, and the leftovers are amazing too. There was three of us, we shared the appetizer sampler and then we each had a different entree. the egg rolls are probably one of the best egg rolls I’ve ever had and I am picky about egg rolls. Their cream cheese rolls instead of wontons were so good! I could eat those all day, every day. Chicken satay and fried dumplings were ok. One of us got the sesame chicken, which was good but it was unlike any sesame chicken I’ve had before, I normally expect a sweet sauce but this was definitely a savory sauce. Again it was good but different than I expected. One of us had the spicy red curry, which was probably my favorite and I would definitely order again! Then the third entree was spicy basil fried rice with chicken which was fantastic! You can pick your spiciness level which I love and there’s extra spice at the table that you can add. I highly recommend this place. So nice and clean, attentive staff, they even had a sign inside that said rude customers would get a $10 fee lol. I love it.
The sweet basil noodles are the best! It's their signature noodle dish with beef, shrimp and chicken. We've been ordering them for years and always hits the spot.
Great place for lunch
Tasty and generous portions.
Great service
Good food. Definitely will be back
Delicious food, I savored every bite! "Hot" is understandably "Minnesota hot" here, so if you're a spice fiend, definitely ask to max out on the heat. The chili oil is great too.
Good food great portion size high quality ingredients really properly cooked with good seasoning and good balance of flavors and textures
The take out quality has gone down hill. There have been basic items left out of our orders the last two times. Once the sweet and sour sauce was left out for our order of sweet and sour chicken - it's just chicken nuggets without the sauce. And last time the rice was left out. I consider both of these basic items which were left out of our order.
I don't know what is going on here but the quality of insuring the correctness of take out orders is gone. I will have to unpack my entire order next time to insure we have everything. That is if there is a next time.
Great food and great service, nice atmosphere with a cozy set up! Highly Recommended!
My husband and I first time eating at this restaurant and is amazing. Very friendly environment and the waitresses was so nice. Will be coming back soon.
Sweet Basil is a local treasure. The red curry is amazing and the egg rolls might be my favorite in the twin cities. The staff is super friendly, and their lunch prices cannot be beat.
Delicious spicy Pad Thai
One of my FAVES!! Love the sukiyaki pho!!
Sadly Sweet Basil has been slipping the last year or two and today was a new low. I got the fried rice upgrade and when I got home and opened it I realized I paid $3 for soy sauce, as it was white rice with basically soy sauce even cooked into it. Zero flavor and not fried like their normal fried rice (or what it used to be.) Even the beef and broccoli was unusually watery and felt cheaply made in a rush.
The Pad Thai was okay, but a little dry and lacking of flavor again (last few times have been inconsistent but was once the best in the area.)
It may be time to start driving a little further to 85th where these is a tiny little spot that make consistently better Pad Thai and entrees.
However, Sweet Basil's egg rolls are still pretty darn good. One of my top three of all time.
Used to be much better but still worth 4 stars
We sat outside because the weather was perfect.
I had the egg roll salad. It was great. I suspect this is one of those places where I go infrequently enough that I'll just always order the first thing I ever ordered there because it was great, I'm not tired of it, so why mess with a good thing. I suspect other dishes are good too...
Excellent service!! So fast and friendly! And the flavors are amazing!! Outstanding all around!! Stop reading reviews and eat here!!
I was in the neighborhood and decided on take-out. Friendly staff. Service was surprisingly quick today for a Saturday afternoon. I love their egg rolls.
The people there were friendly and very nice to work with. We had never ordered take out from Sweet Basil and were really looking forward to finding another option for Chinese take out. Unfortunately, it didn't taste as well as the smells that came from the aroma of the restaurant kitchen. The servings were very generous however, the sesame chicken tasted nothing like we have had before and not in a good way. Basically all the sesame chicken was chunks of fried chicken, which was dry even with the sauce they served it with. The fried rice was tasteless, more like dirty rice. No veggies, onions, flavor, or looked as if they threw it in the pan that was hot tossed it around and put it in our take out box. The cream cheese rolls were about the only thing we really enjoyed out of it all. If they suggest you order a side of fried rice instead of the white rice tell them No. We now have several servings of white rice enough for me to make a hotdish to share at a picnic. Was excited to try Sweet Basil, now sorry we did.....very disappointing.
Delicious. Attentive service.
Loved the egg rolls 😋 & the fried rice. My family enjoys the food from here. We will continue to eat here.
This is one of our regular restaurants. I don't often write reviews, Sweet Basil is better than other Thai Places I've been to that have higher reviews. This makes no sense.
The staff are always kind and helpful and the food is always good. :)
This place has such great flavor!!!0
Placed an online order and ended up waiting for 40 minutes after the scheduled pickup time for the food. Probably wouldn’t have left this review after that but the food was a major let down for how long I waited. I ordered a pad thai with a 2 spice level.. it was so spicy that my boyfriend and I couldn’t even finish it (and we have pretty high spice tolerances). We also got cream cheese wontons that were undercooked. Egg rolls were decent. Pretty disappointing for overpriced Thai food.
Small dining room, clean very friendly fast good food
This was our first experience with Sweet Basil and will unfortunately likely be our last. We were underwhelmed with the flavors and food in general. The rice noodles in the Singapore noodle dish were overcooked and basically mush; I wasn't able to eat it due to the texture. The Mekong curry had an off tangy flavor and it was very thin and not rich and creamy; which is unlike any other Massamun curry I've had. The cream cheese wontons were tiny - especially for being priced at $1 each - and I can same the same about the chicken satay (small portion and overpriced.) We already miss Lemon Grass (which just permanently closed) for curries and noodles - I guess we'll need to keep searching for a local replacement because Sweet Basil does not come close to the mark. A few positives though - the food was hot and ready for pickup at the designated time and the staff was friendly.
When I first walked up, it looked like fine dining with actual cloth tablecloths. It isn't, there's no dress code. The food is more on the Thai side of Asian food. The egg rolls are amazing. I was disappointed in the tropical rice because I've had it elsewhere, and the flavor was lacking in comparison. The sweet basil stir fry is a savory delight, I would even call it comfort food. Service was awesome, our server was on top of it, she took very good care of us --And food came quickly. The one complaint I have, and it isn't even really a complaint, is that they don't have Mango sticky rice dessert. Everything was amazing and I will be back!
Delicious food. Service was wonderful and fast
Excelente comida y muy buen servicio
Everything we’ve had here has been great, especially the mango spring rolls! Great service as well!
It was so delicious!
Nice service.
This was my first time at Sweet Basil. I enjoyed the food and opportunity to meet with friends in a nice environment.
Didn't like the food
The Thai basil stir fry was just okay but the spicy basil fried rice was excellent. Polite staff and a comfortable atmosphere.
Their food is always delicious and staff is always wonderful.
The food was great. Great flavors with rice that was freshly cooked had had a nice crispiness to it. Like it had been freshly cooked in a wok. I have tasted from coast to coast and this ranks in top 5.
First I'll say staff was very nice and friendly. No issues there. But unfortunately the food was not good and it was overpriced. Chicken was super dry, tough and soggy. I couldn't finish it. Fried rice and soup was also very bland. If you want good food, sadly I wouldn't recommend this place.
It was okay. Food was hot and service was good. Spring rolls were great but I do prefer peanut sauce instead of the pepper sauce they gave but it was still good. I had the Singapore noodles and the noodles were too soft for my liking and not enough vegetables, just curry flavor, onions, green pepper and chicken. I’ve had better.
Overated very expensive cheap pho. Broth made from powder and tons of msg/sodium
The best!
Good
We asked our food to be ready at 5. Arrived at 4.50 and food was done. Brought it home and it was Luke warm. Had made a special comment for packets of hot mustard for egg rolls, nothing was in the bag. Sweet and sour chicken was very tough. Cashew chicken had 3 cashews in it. We included a tip and this meal was a bust. Time to find a new Asian establishment.
Great food and friendly service.
Waited an hour while they served other people that were hear after us and they still aint got our order out. Server says i dont know but i thought the ticket was in the kitchen. If you are on a lunch break DO NOT
Come here
It's okay! Very fancy restaurant... First time eating here... The food is ok.. Order fresh rolls, those were good.. the papaya salad is not worth it.. it was not good... Too salty... The pho was very good... If u are going to add them Chili oil make sure to just put a pinch because it's damn spicy as heck....
Best Pad Thai in the Twin Cities! Very good food still. The seat covers look great, but it's hard to not slide off your chair.
This was out first time visit to Sweet Basil for a birthday dinner. Both food and service were outstandingly good! Highly recommend their Mekong curry.
For take out we ordered 3 items and egg rolls. The egg rolls were great, but every other part of our order was wrong. From no sauce on sweet and sour chicken to no spice on the other orders even though a 3 and 4 was requested. We have been here before and it was good, but this was very disappointing. Check your order before you leave. I gave 2 stars because the egg rolls were very good.
Very friendly staff no matter who is working when I visit. Food is very fresh with quality ingredients and comes out steaming hot every time. Try the sweet basil noodles they are spicy and sweet at the same time and are addicting!
Honest food, great service.
Foods good. They have forgotten items on take out order last three times so my business goes elsewhere now.
Expensive for what reason? I cannot understand, it wasn't very good
It’s so hard to find a good Asian restaurant these days! Even old favorites have changed cooks and the food doesn’t taste the same. We have been to Sweet Basil before but this time everything was on point! Keep it up!
Friendly service. Food was delicious and fresh. Definitely will go back. There are so many more dishes I want to try.
We ate here on a Saturday afternoon and it was fantastic. It was our first time but will not be the last. We split the chicken fried rice and sweet basil noodles, they were so tasty. The staff was very friendly as well. I highly recommend this place.
We tried Sweet Basil for the first time tonight. I had the Sweet Basil Noodle and hubs had the Combination Garlic Stir Fry. The food was delicious and the service was excellent! We will be back!
spendy, slower on service for lunch, food a little above average. i'd come back and see how it goes.
Our experience was great! My girlfriend and I enjoyed our food we both had Pho Saigon for our appetizer we had simple platter. Kathy are server was very personable, we even told her about Rocky Mountain oysters 😆 🤣 😂. We will be back.
Out STANDING service and the food was very good. Even in what was an absolutely excruciatingly-bad snow storm, they took great care of us and did the best they could to accommodate the number of people trying to get their delivery orders out. Highly recommend!
Everything was PERFECT!
Food is absolutely delicious highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants to get Asian food takeout they always get my order right never missing anything and again the food is absolutely delicious I drive out on my way to go here when I have the time
Very disappointed! Spent almost $90 for food for 4. Went to pick up food & get home & find half the order is missing. Tried to call them back and they send all calls directly to voice mail & mailbox is full (which is common when I try to call there to order, barely answer their phone). Expensive & not worth the hassle!
January 27, 2022 update to my post from a year ago: last night we got take out for four people. The fresh spring rolls, Pad Thai and BBQ Pork Fried Rice were excellent. The Jungle Curry and Yellow Curry were so runny that we thought we had been given soup by mistake. This was very disappointing as we never have had a bad meal in the past. We have been getting takeout frequently from Sweet Basil during the pandemic. Not sure what's going on, but I'm hesitant to order anything with a "sauce" going forward.
Prompt service, delicious food. Our group had eggrolls, fresh spring rolls, and cream cheese wontons for apps. Highly recommend the pad thai and Chicken in peanut sauce. Tina, our server, was wonderful...enthusiastic, attentive and very engaging.
This is my go to place when anyone wants to go for lunch in Brooklyn Park. The food is amazing, and the service is exceptional. Kali is an amazing server, who makes sure your food is always on point. I recommend the cheese wonton rolls along with any of the rice dishes. You get a good portion with every dish, and it's definitely affordable. Make sure you try the Thai Tea as well. It's sweet, and very delicious.
This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants of all time. I highly recommend the cream cheese roll ups and beef fried rice with spice level of 3 or 4. They're very prompt with pick up orders and have a nice dining space
Okay food. Bit pricey
Great food! I'll be back!
I got fry rice. Did not worth the money was little in the black container. Did not satisfy
Dirty place. Windows were filthy. I would not eat there again. Floors in entrance were filthy too. I can only imagine what kitchen is like. Yuck!
The service was good, the food came fairly quick and it was very good! I really enjoyed the ambience as well very cute place!
Great food and service. Only thing missing is alcohol 😒
1st time trying Sweet Basil. I have to say my food was excellent and well enjoyed. I definitely will be coming back again.
Food are delicious and great customer service but on online orders are awful, never on time.
Very slow service. Ordered online. Said it would be ready in 30 minutes. Arrived 30 minutes to pick up the food. Then had to wait an additional 30 minutes to get my food. Meanwhile they quoted customers walking in only a 15 minute wait for food.
I give Sweet Basil a 4.5
We had:
Spring rolls. Peanut sauce was delish. Spring rolls could use some fresh herbs to flavor it up.
Chicken wings - best in the metro. They were meaty and delish. The sauce was delish too
Papaya salad. Delish
Chicken with peanut sauce - good
Sweet Basil Dinner special. - super delish.
Service was fantastic. Hopping place for take out. The servers were on point. ...
Will definitely go back soon!
We ordered the cream cheese rolls and chicken pad thai. We debated between 2 and 3 pepper spice level.
Glad we went with 3 as it was not too spicy. Food was good. Service was excellent. Many take out orders and several dine in customers with only one server, but she was extremely friendly and handled it with ease.
I ordered egg rolls for takeout and they took my order wrong and gave me spring rolls instead... I came back to get my right order and I was accused of trying to get free food. I couldn't believe the poor customer service and lack of professionalism I was met with. I left the whole order with them and walked away disappointed. I didn't even get a chance to taste the food to even give a proper review of the food, but I'm sure it's as bad as their customer service.
Great food, tasty and reasonable priced
Excellent customer service and great food!
Best eggrollls EVER!
