We came here on a Friday night without reservations and planned to come early around 530 and they were actually busy. The staff were so friendly and let us know that they had reservations and there would be time to come back around 7. So she recommended some bars nearby. We quickly were called back and got seated. It had a small dining room but service is quick. We got edamame, also style papaya salad (5 spice level, the highest), a sushi roll (I think dynamite, I forgot), and a red curry with chicken that came with rice. It was all really good and more than enough for 2 people. We had enough to take home. They had a wide selection. There’s a parking lot next to the building and some street parking.
Yesterday, I saw some friends had gone to try this restaurant in Minneapolis so I wanted to try too. It’s a smaller joint so seating can be tight if it gets full. It used to be Thai owned but is now Hmong owned. It’s like Japan smashed into Thailand. Little bit of a drive for me but totally worth it. I wanted to try as many things as I could off the menu. I got their kapoon, papaya salad (Lao style), chicken pad thai, chicken fried rice, pork eggrolls, and sticky rice. They offer spice levels 1 - 5. I ordered the papaya and pad thai with a spice level of 2 since I can’t take much spice. The waiter was super nice and attentive. The food came out in a timely manner and was fresh, hot, and well presented. And the taste? 😍 Omg it was an explosion of flavors in my mouth and I’m a picky eater. The kapoon was sooo good, like your own homemade kapoon. Not too much or too little coconut milk. The papaya salad had a good kick to it and was sooo refreshing. The pork eggrolls were really fresh and was delicious with their dipping sauce. I was worried about the pad thai not coming up to my standards but after squeezing lime juice over it and mixing it all together, it was phenomenal! I was sooo excited and happy to find another place that had 💣 ass pad thai. The fried rice had that burnt wok taste which means it’s legit. Sticky rice was only on the side to go with the papaya. Overall, I would rate the food 8/10 that I’ve tried so far. I didn’t do any of the sushi/seafood so y’all are gonna have to try it yourself to see if you like it. But for the Thai food, I would definitely recommend. I’m already anticipating going back again bc the food is so good. I literally dreamed of eating the food all night, that’s how good it was.
I rounded up but this was more of a 3.5 than a 4. Nothing was bad, sushi was pretty good but the Thai dishes were disappointing (they lacked flavor). Everything was well cooked (fish was flaky etc) but it just didn't pack much flavor in it for Thai food. The chicken karage was delicious and definitely worth the try, I'd recommend skipping the hamachi collar. Overall some dishes were great and others were meh.
We came without a reservation but they made time for us which was great! Our waiter’s service was average and they recommended the boat noodles to us. I don’t recommend it. I’ve had better. Even though it’s made out of beef and their beef pieces were really yummy and tender, the soup base was incredibly oily and salty. Plus they don’t give enough broth so once you mix it, the broth is all soaked up. The sushi however, was sooooo goood!! I love the chirashi bowl! I’ll try their other dishes someday. Those looked better.
This place has a special menu on Mondays. It’s small but cozy especially eating alone. The food was great and the staff were really friendly. I would definitely go back with more people to try more things. The pork belly was great especially with the jeow sauce and pickles- I would definitely get this again. The presentation of the hamachi was refreshing.
Small restaurant. They do take reservations and actually put your name at the table. But the website said they will remove your reservation if you’re 30 min late. We got the egg rolls which were good and I liked the sauce. They were out of seaweed salad and not in season for mango sticky rice.
Fresh sushi. Drunken noodles were good- make sure you ask for wide noodles

“Bagu” is the right name, because a BAG U might need… for vomiting from food poisoning. Our date night got super romantic when we both got diarrhea last night from dinner. I’m still suffering a day later, likely canceling my plans for the next couple of days. We had the dragon roll, Laab, takoyaki and miso soup. I will not return to Bagu. Life is too short for this.
BaGu was Ok, food was ok, service was ok, the table next to the front door on a cold NYE was chilly (even more so without alcohol being served that night).

This is our neighborhood sushi spot- we’ve been going for years. Something has changed. Ownership? Not sure. We had a reservation- and it took 15 minutes for us to order a drink. And our food didn’t come for almost 1 hour. The waitress apologized a few times- but that’s too long. Regardless. The spicy run roll was WAY too spicy- couldn’t even taste the dish. Sashimi was very good. The restaurant was not bathrooms/ sink were not decorated or clean.
Great food. Wonderful Happy Hour
Sushi, ramen, and desserts were delicious. Their outdoor patio is welcoming and private.
One of my go-to places.
Always amazing food.
Excelente little neighborhood place. Excellent happynhour apps and rolls
My wife loves Thai green curry and I love sushi and we'd never heard of this place. This place produces the largest nigori I have ever seen and the green curry is now her favorite.
I've been here many times. Great! Some of the best sushi in town. I agree that service can be very slow especially for takeout. The timelines they provide have never been accurate. It's typically 20mns longer. But knowing that and planning ahead a bit it is worth the visit. As others have commented I love the baked mussels, tuna tataki and all sushi has been great. My family has enjoyed the ramen and curry (was good. Can't really beat the curry at Gai Noi). I liked the drunken noodles but would not recommend the pork belly with it. I found it to be very oily. Employees are friendly and welcoming. Dining in can be tricky because it is so small. And upon approaching it looks like it's shut down due to lack of information on the outside. I recommend making a reservation. Speed of service at Malcolm yards is better but the menu doesn't include my favorites so I still have to drive across town. Would love if they could expand their menu at that location though!
Went for a special dinner. Service was really slow. It took 30 minutes to get water. We placed our order immediately. 45 minutes later 3 orders of the 4 orders arrived. One did not. Everyone finished and we were still missing one entree. We managed to flag down a server who said the kitchen was behind and it would still be another 15 minutes. As everyone else was done, we just asked for it to go. We finally received it as we were walking out the door. The server was apologetic, but no adjustment was made for the bill. Disappointing and probably won’t return.
Amazing food and fast service, underrated place, everything was awesome
Great sushi and friendly staff! Love coming here
The food was absolutely delicious! I highly recommend giving BaGu a try!
Food is good, service made us feel a bit unwelcome however, as the server made it obvious they were annoyed to be serving us. Could do more to make the restaurant feel more lively, it's pretty bare bones.
We live close by and order carry out nigiri/sushi rolls from this location at least once a week and they never disappoint. Love to dine in when patio is open !! Make sure to get a reservation if dining in and order at least 45-1 hr before pickup!
This place is consistently delicious but take out is SO SLOW. I order the moment they open and we still wait an hour everytime.
We came without a reservation but they made time for us which was great! Our waiter’s service was average and they recommended the boat noodles to us. I don’t recommend it. I’ve had better. Fresh sushi. Drunken noodles were good- make sure you ask for wide noodles
Went with my husband on a Saturday night to try out their sushi. Typical pricing, great quality fish/ingredients, friendly service. The menu is fantastic. Ordered 3 rolls and Chicken Pad Thai. All delicious. Took off 1 star because the sushi rice was quite thick/overpowering.
There food is so good! I love the tofu they add to their dishes - the Pad sew ew is delicious!
This place has a special menu on Mondays. It’s small but cozy especially eating alone. The food was great and the staff were really friendly. I would definitely go back with more people to try more things. The pork belly was great especially with the jeow sauce and pickles- I would definitely get this again. Great food, atmosphere and owners!
Was busy but tame and the food was so good! We had sushi, bad Thai, Thai tea and softshell Crab 🦀 can't wait to go back.
I do not like how the sushi rice is served cold. Gross.
So yummy.
We go some Tuesdays and always have great food and service! Love this place.
Amazing staff and love the food as well.
It’s never spicy when we ask for spicy. Also the mango sticky rice is never available. Curry is good
my fav thing here is the baked mussels, it was so good and I had to get more. Got to try the spicy ramen( too oily for my liking and it wasn’t a good kind of spice), pad kra pra( I wish they would’ve used real basil kapra leave instead of sweet basil, not very authentic), baked mussel( on point and so delicious), sushi( it was good depending on what you like).
Walked in and it looked completely dead. Then they said “inside or outside?” No outdoor seating was evident so we chose that. We were ushered through the restaurant to an enclosed outdoor area with nice lights and ambience. The staff was nice and the food was great!
Yeah, pretty great. Drunken Noodles with crab and the wide noodles is the bees knees. Nice patio put back.
This is one of our go to spots since moving to the area! Great service with amazing food! The sushi rolls are huge and packed! All the appetizers are amazing and the main dishes are delicious.
This small sushi place is a gem. The sushi is top tier, same for the sake selections, and the service is friendly and helpful. The sushi is delicious and the edame is the perfect appetizer. The inside seating is cramped, but the patio is divine, with soft lighting as night falls, some comfy couches in a corner and a fountain surrounded by lush, edible plants. This is the date spot for dinner, before taking in a show at The Parkway Theater, just a block away.
I loved this place. The pad see ew and green curry with tofu were both delicious! The service was great and the ambiance is very nice, especially on the back patio. Would highly recommend!
Great food and service!
Amazing secluded patio, great food
Best sushi in the twin cities, bar none. The ginger is fresh, the sashimi and nigiri melt in your mouth. (Some of the nigiri pieces have actual wasabi grated on top!!) Incredible experience time and time again, especially sitting outside on the deck with the water fountain running in the background. The consistency and flavors at BaGu are where it's at!
Best we've had in ages, pork dumplings and salmon skin was incredible. Fantastic quality
The restaurant is great, but google's price list isn't accurate. Be sure to check the restaurant's website.
I love BAGU! Food is amazing, good quality and very generous portion.
Delicious food, lovely staff, always a great time!
Drunken noodles and Sushi are the highlight at this neighborhood date night gem
Karlea was really hospitable
Ive ordered the Bagu roll several times and each time I eat it I am blown away. Tonight my family and I ate at Malcolm where Bagu has a stand. AMAZING. I complimented the chef and he made me a new roll to go along with my second Bagu. I had one of the "food" experiences when you eat something so good for the first time that you can't believe how awesome it is. Highly, highly recommend this restaurant.
I loved going here! We were able to walk in but as it is a tiny restaurant, reservations may be preferred. The food was delicious. They have great food specials. The servers were very kind and knowledgeable. Easy to walk to from where I parked. That being said, there's only street parking.
One of the best in the city. Great place for a date night or to bring home to the whole family.
Always fantastic. Love the food and atmosphere
The Thai food is pretty good and apps were tasty. The sushi could be better. The crispy pork belly pad Thai had good flavor and had a good mix of sauce. It was a good ratio of salty, sweet and sour. Cream cheese wontons were average, not bad but not amazing. Papaya salad tasted good and has a good lime zest flavor. Tom yum soup tasted clean and right amount of sour. The baked muscles are pretty good and worth trying. I would avoid the 3 wise man roll that has a thick brown layer of sauce on top. It was very salty and ruined the fresh taste that sushi usually has.
Amazing sushi and Thai food! My wife and kids loved it.
Want to support my neighborhood business but I get hassled every time I go here. I ordered online. And not only was it a 50 minute wait, when I got there I had to wait an extra 25 minutes. And the food is not even very good. I will be driving the extra 15 minutes to a better quality place.
Good food but they don't take to go sushi orders until you are in the restaurant. Issue being I have ordered to go food and then arrive and they say they can't make sushi at that time
Really great dinner. Loved that they could make almost anything gluten free as needed.
Nice local restaurant. Quite small.
A little disappointed. Food was average. Had sushi and Thai food. Service was slow for such a small place
The food is delicious. When ordering take out keep in mind it may take an hour or more for your order to be ready. It's worth the wait.
Had tried the place quite a few times, whenever we're in Minneapolis. Food was really good. Excellent service. Place requires reservations for the usual busy times though. Parking can be an issue Keep it up guys
I love this place for sushi or Thai.
We ordered takeout. I ordered tofu green curry and received chicken instead. My wife and I ordered mild spice for our dishes and instead received medium.
Really cute restaurant, small but cute. I came for my birthday dinner with my Aunt. The server noticed it was my birthday when I ordered my sake. At the end of the meal she brought out some sticky rice with a candle in it. It was really really sweet of her, and really made my day. The sushi was amazing btw! I will definitely be coming back again.
The food is delectable!!
I just wish they opened earlier : /
Food here is really good. But they are a bit pricey. But you do get great food.
(3.5/5)
I've got mixed feelings about BaGu, I was worried that the fusion of what seems like southeast asian and more japanese cuisine would provide a mediocre representation, and, I was sorta right. I thought the food appetizers and entrees tasted better than the sushi.
The Sunset and Crunchy Spicy Tuna (CST) rolls tasted generic, like if I went to a sushi buffet, this is what I would expect. Know what I mean? The Sunset one was very mellow and sweet, but didn't have a "wow" factor. The CST one was more interesting because of the play on textures, crunchy, sweet, fresh, creamy, salty but I was left unimpressed as both were nearly $20 a roll.
Karage - this seemed to have SE Asian flare on it as the the most dominant flavors were ginger and salt. I would use a tad bit less salt, but the choice to use dark meat was smart and kept the chicken moist and add richness. One thing to note is that the dish came out in a large clump and needed to be manually separated into sharable pieces.
Gyoza - nice hard pan sear and meat had sweet notes. Would use more green onions + white and black pepper. Accompanying soy sauce had some variation of vinegar mixed in and it contrasted well against the saltiness.
*Public Service Announcement*
Spice levels are on the Asian Richter scale, so if spice isn't your forte, order one level, or two, down from what you usually do.
Drunken Noodles - order with wide noodles, it makes a difference. The dish was SPICY (learn from me, I didn't ask which heat scale it was) but very, very flavorful. Savory all around with notes of holy basil and sweet seared crab. Chewy and crunchy textures.
Pad Thai - okay, this is like a stereotypical dish, but nonetheless, always a viable option. The dish was nutty and sweet, almost caramel like, and balanced the spice.
Overall, BaGu is pretty expensive and I'd go back for the food, but not sushi. I still think the sushi buffets are a better bang-for-your-buck type of place.
Our first time here and everything we ordered was outstanding - cream cheese puff, pork egg rolls, chicken drunken noodles (with wide noodles), and fried rice with crispy pork. This will be our new go to place for Thai food. We can’t wait to try the the sushi!
Great sushi for the price. Big cuts for nigiri and good rolls.
Good food and service. This a small place a little loud to have a conversation.
Cozy local place with an enjoyable back patio, dedicated chefs, and great sushi
Bomb sushi
Tasty sushi and Thai!
Good sushi isn’t cheap, and cheap sushi isn’t good. This place checks both boxes with ease,
and with a lasting memory of what good sushi tastes like. Absolutely go when you’re ready to indulge.
There is a 3.5% surcharge per card transaction! Came here yesterday with my partner for dinner and it was pretty good. Initial impression is that the restaurant is EXTREMELY small. It can sit about 10-15 people total. The waitress was extremely friendly and helpful. It did kind of suck that half the drinks on the menu they did not have available. The food came out pretty promptly. We ordered the fried dumplings, the California roll, the number 9 and another set of sushi. It’s weird how different types have a set amount. There’s a list of ones that come with 5,6,8 sushi rolls, it would be nice to be able to decided which type of sushi roll you want and how many from the options listed. Food was delicious and well prepared. Pricing was pretty affordable as well. As stated in other reviews there is a 3.5% surcharge for using a card which is not disclosed anywhere on the menu or by the staff. If you come, I would suggest using cash. Overall the food was good. I would definitely return!
They were understaffed and we did had to wait quite some time but the food was still phenomenal. Very kind waitress.
Great spot! Super tasty. Sushi, ramen, appetizers are all bussin
Abysmal service for both in person and take out. I called twice With no answer and on the third call they had taken the phone off the hook. Don’t bother trying to call if it is within an hour of close as they don’t bother picking up.
In person service is slow to say the least. I waited five minutes standing in the doorway, walked to the back and picked up a menu and the server walked right past me without greeting so I just left.
I wish I could rate it higher because the food is good but the experience sucks.
Some of the best sushi in Minneapolis in my opinion! So fresh, family oriented hole In the wall shop that has incredible food!
Outstanding Thai food. We had drunken noodles (fried tofu and soft shelled crab). Make sure to specify wide noodles or as other reviewers have noted you’ll get ramen. Very long wait for takeout on a busy Friday night: 1 hour, 20 minutes. But hot and very tasty.
First time eating sushi loved it
Still our favorite sushi restaurant (even after moving across the country). Will definitely visit when we are back in Minnesota!
Teeny tiny sushi and Thai place in minneapolis. According to my dad they have a really cute patio in the back during the summer. Despite only having about 8-10 tables in the entire restaurant, service was slow. They only had 1 beer available out of like 5-6 that were on the menu. Looked like there was only 1 sushi chef for the entire time we were there. Food was OUTSTANDING. So delicious, with a huge variety of sushi rolls to choose from. Bathrooms are a little dingy. Overall it was good but for the high prices and the 3.5 surcharge for card we probably won’t come back.
Great food. Their drunken noodles with big noodles is amazing.
It took us an hour to receive our food, and there was only our group of five people and another table with four people in the restaurant. Service was extremely slow. The quality of the food was nothing extraordinary. It's your typical sushi and Thai food that you can get anywhere. Location is inconvenient and parking was impossible to find.
Delicious sushi and great Thai food.
Good red curry! Nice staff.
BaGu is incredibly underrated. Went tonight for Happy Hour and the Sushi was SO delicious, fresh and affordably priced. We got 2 drinks, an entree and three rolls of sushi for $50. The only downside is that the tables are so close to each other and it’s SO quiet which can be kind of awkward when trying to have a conversation.
What an incredible place. The food was very well made and high quality. We ordered karaage, spicy salmon roll, dragon roll, and some eel nigiri. We also drink some hot sake. Everything was made very well and was delicious. The dragon roll was the best dragon roll I've ever had. And the taste of the eel was what I had hoped, and the presentation was awesome. Spicy salmon roll was spicy! The placement of the sushi was well done. I'm very pleased with the customer service as well. They were very fast and very friendly. I'll definitely be coming back in the near future.
Love the food and atmosphere! Soo yummy!
Ordering a simple takeout outside of peak hours? I hope you’re okay with waiting an hour. For some reason Thai food always takes longer than they say it will (which is always “45 minutes”) Spicy tuna roll was drenched in chili sauce. Dragon roll had tuna salad in it. Folks are nice. Experience and food is not.
Very good quality sushi but you definitely pay for it and service is not the fastest in the world but over all love this place
Great food, great service
Good sushi, curries, tempura.
I have been in this neighborhood 3 1/2+ years, Bagu Shushi consistently doesn’t meet their time tables in term of ‘to go’ food and they offer this and they offer that but excuses get weary and lame. I was supposed to get my food today at 7:05, then 7:30 and at 7:40 I was told 50%off for another ten minutes, which on their watch was probably 15-20. I love a good deal but when I place an order and have people at my house to enjoy that…well it’s the restaurant business and Bagu Sushi is not good at it. Not to mention I would barely rate them a four star for quality of food if they were not so poorly managed. We need another sushi restaurant in the area to put this place out of business.
Great staple in the neighborhood for sushi and pad thai. Staff is always friendly. Easy for takeout.
Good food and pleasant atmosphere. I’m rating 4 stars because nowhere on their menu nor website do they mention that they charge a hefty 3.5% additional surcharge to pay with a debit card or credit card. Their staff also didn’t mention this surcharge to me as I handed my card to them for payment, which would have been a decent courtesy.
I made an order for pick up then waited 40 minutes AFTER they said it would be ready. Later found out they never even made it. Really frustrating
Great food and great service!
Great food. They have greatly improved take out service.
Their sushi is incredible. Love the Mama roll
Delicious dinner, and great service. Our fried items were crisp and hot, even by the time I got them home. They were out of chicken wings, but substituted a more expensive item, and gave me free edamame for the trouble.
New favorite pad thai in Minneapolis. The sushi is really awesome, too.
We came here hoping to have a birthday dinner for my daughter and had assumed they had dine in, but during this time no avail. However, the owners were very courteous and let us order out. Their service was great and the food was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend.
Good portion of fish for the price. Love suishi Wednesdays
Best sushi in town.
So happy to have tried this place a couple of weeks ago. We were so happy with how delicious the sushi was we decided to go back again last night for another incredible dinner!! The noodles were good but the sushi was amazing. The prices are reasonable and wait time for pick up orders were not too long. Overall very good experience.
Food is really good, but they’ve messed up multiple orders lately. Chicken when asked for tofu, wrong quantities, etc. Hoping they can turn it back around.
Waited 1.5 hours for this. Not sure what was going on, but my "hot" appetizers were cold once I got the food. Service was super slow and bad, so 0 star for the service. 1 star because the sushi was good and okay cold. Will not go back due to slow service. Will give Bagu another shot once we can dine back in to see if their dine in service is as slow as take out.
Egg rolls, pad thai and beef drunken noodles make this a go to for thai food on the south side
No dining in at this point and they are enacting covid procedures. Spacing, face masks, and even separate the pens...used and unused. Place was sanitized while I was sitting there. Food was excellent, we went a Saturday evening while it was snowing and it was non stop busy. They are only open 4 hours in the evening. I think they take their last order at 2030. Definitely going back
Awesome sushi rolls that travel really well for takeout. Tom Yum soup was delicious also. Make sure to give yourself time when placing your order as they are quite popular.
Great takeout service tonight during the pandemic. That's really appreciated!
Excellent Thai and Sushi in one place
Awsome!!
O m g. Bagu is, hands down, my favorite sushi place in Minnesota. I have never in my life had a better #9 roll and their miso soup and desserts are FIRE. The staff are friendly and helpful, the location is convenient, the interior is small but cute. If you call for takeout, their estimated pickup times are very accurate and reasonable. The surrounding shopping area is cute in both winter and summer. Lots of great menu options. A great place for a date, to go with friends, to take a sushi "beginner", or to take your sushi connoisseur. Everyone I've ever taken has been impressed. Their back patio is surprisingly wonderful. And as far as COVID, they are taking appropriate precautions.
