Average experience. Food looks appetizing, but lacks attention to detail (missing avocado in some of the sushi). Noodle portions were inadequate for the price. Most of the container was empty. $8 soup was slightly spilled due to inadequate packaging. Also, my daughter found a hair in her rice. Room for improvement.

Diner Review №2

They took my money for an omakase reservation for 2. They called the day prior and denied the reservation due to lack of staff, which is understandable. I asked them to instead give me a reservation for their a la carte serving, but they refused. They said I had to wait in line like everyone else?!

In addition, they did not refund my $50 per person reservation fee, despite their promises to do so. Unbelievable. I had to make a credit card claim to get a refund. Craziness. Never going to go here, ever. Totally mismanaged.

Diner Review №3

You constantly have to wait for my order, can't they increase the staff a little, the food is so-so!

They just say wait wait.

Diner Review №7

Food came out quick, delicious, and beautiful.

Poor service chicken was stringy and tough. Couldn’t eat it. Not a nice atmosphere

Diner Review №10

The food was absolutely amazing and the atmosphere was great as well. HOWEVER, the server was beyond rude.
My friend and I split a basil fried rice and a shrimp appetizer. We sat at the bar, right in front of the sushi station. The server took our orders, gave us our food, refilled our water once, and asked how the food was one time. Service was nothing special at all. The total for each of us was $14.15, and I rounded up the total to $15 and paid. I didn’t tip much because we sat at the bar, service was literally nothing special, and tips are never required. Once the server saw my tip amount, she began interrogating me about the tip amount, ending off by saying to not dine in with them again if I can’t tip. Both my friend and I, who are first year college students, were extremely uncomfortable and a little scared. I was insanely taken aback because it’s never okay to do this as a server, especially when you factor in the fact that it’s EXTREMELY unprofessional.
I was just telling my friend how much I loved the food and was literally thinking how this place might become my usual spot given how much I love Thai food and how close by it is. However, after this terrible experience, I will NEVER be coming back.

Diner Review №11

Everything was very fresh. I really enjoyed the toro and uni. Fresh wasabi was very nice. Lovely cocktail.

I also ordered the spider roll and the waitress didn’t tell me they didn’t have soft shell crab. She didn’t write anything down and I thought maybe she just forgot. She never came back with it so I was just waiting there. Until I asked another waitress. By then I was kind of done and didn’t want to look for anything else.

Overall, I thought the food was very good. I will probably try the omakase box next time or sit in for omakase if I have the time.

Diner Review №12

The Thai noodle and fried rice menus are great. The lunch special sushi was awesome. the AC setting was too cold for me.

We were 4 friends celebrating a birthday (the one who knew the most about Thai cuisine). We ordered a couple of appetizers to share and 4 main dishes - one quite spicy hot (but all are marked for level of “heat”) . One of us ordered a fish dish which isn’t at all common. She was thrilled that it was on the menu and that it was PERFECT! The service was exceptional. Although there is a warning that no outside food is allowed, we brought a birthday cake. The servers were so gracious! When our meal was over, they brought out the cake WITH A CANDLE - which we had forgotten to bring. It was an amazing meal and an unforgettable celebration. THANK YOU, Laughing Monk!

I ordered take out at 4:45, for 5:15 pick up. When I got there at 5:15 I was told it would be a few minutes. I looked at two take out ordered at the desk that where ordered after mine. I said ok! It came out at 5:38 after two other take outs! The worse part: two ladies at the front desk didn’t have a word to say, just a blank stare, no apology! A young man that I know, came out from the back to see what was wrong, why I was waiting so long and tried to find out what was wrong.. he couldn’t.

I am visiting and was really excited about this restaurant…very cool decor and food is quite good. The person who took my order was Paul (whom I later discovered was a manager?), and he was training a new staff member. After taking my order, he never came back to my table again. Several times, I had to flag a busy waitress (Foam) who was lovely and helpful. ALL other staff members were hanging around near the sushi bar (or behind the sushi bar) and talking or joking or walking by and oblivious to simple things, refreshing a drink, refill of water, providing chopsticks, asking if everything was ok etc. I was there at 5:30 and the place was NOT busy….so it didn’t make sense. Overall, food was great, service (and training) could improve.

Diner Review №22

Very good. Standard Thai with sushi menu.

Diner Review №23

I believe they should reevaluate their crab Rangoon distributor (if it’s actually made in house this would be a bigger issue), as the filling of two (2) of the four(4) rangoons was in a plastic bag that I thankfully bit into before swallowing.

First time ordering from here, and I was so pumped for the crab rangoons, as it’s hard to find a place that actually uses real crab meat. Will still order again but this was a huge bummer.

Diner Review №25

Listen, the food here is incredible. Hands down the best sashimi I've ever had, and the mango curry wasn't that far after.

The reason this isn't 5 stars? It is doing WAY too much for the floorplan it was provided.

Props to them for making an incredibly efficient restaurant with such limited space. Truly. But the problem is they find themselves in this weird middle-ground where it's too small to be comfortable, yet too big to be intimate.

Because of this, the menu and execution comes off confused: For menu we have southern Asian meals competing against a course style sushi bar. As for execution we have a busy takeout desk competing with the 5 cramp dining tables, which are all also competing with a sushi bar!

Maybe, drop one of these many concepts your juggling? My vote would be the dining tables. Make it an upscale, high price, low frequency sushi bar (your sushi quality is already well worth it), with takeout for those who cant land a seat at your highly sought after bar.

Will this price people out, myself included? Yes.
Will this make it so you're not just another Takara/Yama? Also yes.

Diner Review №26

What a gem, the Laughing Monk had it all, tremendous service, atmosphere and food. The chicken satay was moist and delicious. The toro just melted in my mouth. All the items were prepared so well with excellent preparation. I am over the moon this place is so close and so good. I will be returning and can strongly recommend everyone does.

Diner Review №27

First time = last time! We eat sushi on avg 2x per week, we have heard the hype around Laughing Monk and decided to give it a try…. The order was missing 3 items when it got to our house, we called and the person on phone was nice, but when my husband went to the restaurant to pick it up 45 mins later (not a busy night) the chef (maybe owner, no idea) was rude, told us we were lying and the order was right, it was our problem. He then said we would have to wait another 30-40 mins. Do you think we are trying to steal sushi - ah no but do expect with a $300 bill we get what we ordered and with a smile. There are PLENTY of places to get great sushi in this area, SERVICE matters especially at that price. Sushi was good but by no means the best the in the area.

Diner Review №29

First of all, I am a huge fan of Laughing Monk Cafe! I have been to the other two locations many times. I really enjoyed this location— everything was so fresh and absolutely delicious! Their sushi is always high quality absolutely worth the price!

Diner Review №30

Laughing Monk Cafe nails it with their delicious food, especially their basil fried rice. They've got quite the kick, so make sure to mention your spice level preference. Vegetarians will love their extensive menu. Just a tip: book ahead to avoid long waits. Can't wait to go back for more!

Diner Review №31

A great fusion of Thai and Japanese cuisine with plenty of tasty options. A consistent good meal for anyone every crossing or thinking of ordering.

Diner Review №32

Really great food, tons of vegetarian option and amazing ambience.

Diner Review №33

Drunken noodles were very tasty

Diner Review №34

Pineapple fried rice was incredible! Also loved the yellow curry. Super small, about 6-8 tables but the service is amazing

Diner Review №35

I guess after ordering they go to pick up the ingredients. Therefore, you need to order 1 day in advance. Can't happen later. They work very slowly, don't forget to take a snack with you while you wait for your order.

Diner Review №36

Great labeled vegan options.

Diner Review №37

Highest delay of Wellesley, so disgusting!

Diner Review №38

Overpriced and mediocre. I ordered the green curry, which was disappointing. The vegetables tasted off. They appear to have used canned peas. I did not try their sushi, which might be better.

Diner Review №39

A large section of delicious vegetarian options. Their veggie tempura is a must try.

Diner Review №40

It is a nice small cozy place in Wellesley. Food is delicious yet portions are a little bit small. We ordered chicken mango curry which amazing yet a bit spicy (but we loved it), Spider roll and California Roll. Definitely recommended

Diner Review №41

The service was fast and the server was friendly. The food was ok, nothing to write home about. The sushi rolls come in 6 small pieces so order a few.

Diner Review №42

Love this place! I visited this restaurant an hour ago with my siblings and couldn’t wait to give them a review. Their food was excellent. We got Pad Thai, Bangkok Dynamites roll, Mango Curry, Pork Belly, and Tom Yum Coconut soup. Everything was so good. Their pad thai is probably one of the best I have ever had in the states and my family eat at quite a few Thai restaurants. Also I tried their Ka Nhom Chan cocktail and it was delightful. I love any drinks with pandan. It was light on alcohol, more of a refreshing aroma cocktail.
My family and I definitely will come back to try other dishes.

Diner Review №43

Really good sushi. Tried the Lunch special and was delighted. Good small place for a quick lunch

Diner Review №52

Delicious food and impeccable friendly service. Also, a very good atmosphere.

Diner Review №53

This place had the best pad thai. Great atmosphere. Good option for date night.

Diner Review №54

The food/sushi here is absolutely delicious! High quality, great ingredients, and nice presentation. I’ve been to many other places but always find myself coming back here for sushi. Highly recommend!

Diner Review №55

The food is authentic and delicious!

Diner Review №56

From a Thai person laughing monk makes the BEST PAD THAI in Massachusetts!

Diner Review №57

Best thai food in Wellesley

Diner Review №58

Very lovely! Excellent service! :)

Diner Review №59

I had the omakase. It was delicious! Some of the best sushi I have had in Massachusetts. Their balancing of flavor was amazing and they had some of the best toro I have ever had.

Diner Review №60

The vegan omakase was unreal. Life changing.

Diner Review №61

Great service, great food

Diner Review №62

Diner Review №63

This sushi spot is a gem! I love the laid-back vibes and the sushi is seriously tasty. It's my go-to place for a quick and delicious sushi fix. Plus, the prices won't break the bank. Highly recommend for a chill sushi night with friends! 🍣😋

Diner Review №64

Diner Review №65

Very good pad Thai

Diner Review №66

Ordered Pad Thai for to-go. One of the most authentic and satisfying Thai cuisine in the area—amazing experience!

Diner Review №67

We come here at least once every two weeks. It is the most authentic Thai restaurant in Boston area. Highly recommend the one in Wellesley.

Diner Review №68

Yummy food!

Diner Review №69

I loved the food and great ambience!!

Diner Review №70

We went here on a Saturday night. They were quite busy so we had a 20-25 minute wait for a table for 2. But the cafe has a cool vibe with the kitchen on display. We didn’t mind the wait. We ordered a cocktail, and a couple of apps - just some edamame and a tom yum soup to start. We then ordered the drunken noodles and tod krafiem for entrees. Everything was delicious but the Tod Kratiem could have used a bit more seasoning and flavor. We also didn’t realize that it was not a stir fry as the vegetables seemed steamed. But overall, great food, drinks, and ambience. I would go back!

Diner Review №71

Great food and experience

Diner Review №72

The sushi is very good. However, the curries are a little too sweet and not enough spicy.

Diner Review №73

Very nice quality and lovely atmosphere!

Savoring Delights: Laughing Monk Cafe – Where Thai Flavors Meet Sushi Creations 🍣
Calling Laughing Monk Cafe my forever sushi spot is an understatement! This charming haven seamlessly merges my love for Thai cuisine and sushi, creating a dining experience that's truly out of this world.
🌿 Aromatic Symphony: Thai food is renowned for its aromatic symphony, featuring notes of lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime leaf. The sushi here takes it up a notch by infusing the sashimi with the unmistakable essence of kaffir lime leaf. With each bite, I'm transported to the vibrant streets of Bangkok, where flavors dance and memories are made.
Embarking on a culinary journey at Laughing Monk Cafe is more than just a meal – it's a celebration of flavors, cultures, and the artistry of creating unforgettable dining experiences. If you're a food enthusiast like me, this spot is an absolute must-visit. Prepare to be amazed and delighted! 🍣🌿

Diner Review №80

Friend and I got the omakase here, presentation was beautiful and the food, service was beyond amazing.

Diner Review №81

Always enjoy coming here

Diner Review №82

The Food was delicious and the service was great.

Diner Review №83

We come for a birthday omakase dinner. The chef and the staff were amazing and we had a lot of fun. The food looks amazing and you can tell they put a lot of effort in making the food taste fresh

Diner Review №84

Diner Review №85

Good service but the food was not good. Sushi rice was soggy. While the fried chicken in the sushi was cold and hard to bite.

Diner Review №86

Let me give it straight, the food itself is pretty good. But in terms of service it’s extremely disappointing, I was charged 6 dollars extra cause I asked for extra ginger and peanut sauce with my food (the waiter did not mention I would be charged). I asked for less ice in my large boba, the waiter handed me a 3/4 full glass saying the rest would have been ice. No other restaurant has been this stingy with their food/service.

They are giving out free teas to people who review them, perhaps that is why you see so many good reviews about the place.

Diner Review №87

Diner Review №88

Been here twice. Everything was tasty! Interior feels authentic, and wait time was very reasonable.

Diner Review №89

"Wow! The omakase course at Laughing Monk Cafe was a culinary masterpiece. Every dish was a delightful surprise, expertly prepared, and beautifully presented. The chef's creativity and attention to detail truly stood out. A must-try for any Japanese cuisine enthusiast!"

Diner Review №90

Wow!! Love this place so much. Such a hidden gem in Wellesley. Delicious Thai food and sushi and super fun drinks. Green curry, pad Thai, pad see ew, fried rice, stir fry, you really can’t go wrong here! All delicious. Service is paced nicely, not too rushed and not too slow. Fun ambience. The small number of tables makes it feel more private and intimate. Everyone was so friendly, highly recommend.

Diner Review №91

Excellent food & services! Great vibes for a date night or hanging out with friends. Will definitely come back here.

Diner Review №92

Love the place! Ordered yellow curry and it was very creamy, not very spicy and so delicious. We ordered a few appitszers and everything was very tasty 😋

Diner Review №93

Diner Review №94

Diner Review №95

This spot is NOTHING like the other laughing monk chains. The menu is totally different and is solely oriented towards American customers with little knowledge of Asian cuisine. The price is also absurd, given the mediocre quality (so many dishes are merely reheated frozen food)

Diner Review №96

Wife and I came for our anniversary and had the omakase. Every plate was delicious and brought something unique to the experience through texture, flavor, and aroma. All of the seafood was fresh and vibrant, and worthy of the showcase.

The plating was immaculate. Some dishes were so beautiful as to have a painterly quality, displaying a master's eye for color and composition. And there's clear evidence of an artist's craft in the experience, expressed through small flourishes like the first bite being served out of a treasure chest salvaged from the ocean's floor, or seating omakase patrons at the bar to witness the performance of the meal's making. Needless to say, if you have a special experience to celebrate, the omakase will make it feel special.

Since that first meal, we've been back a couple of times for (sigh) normal dinners. While they weren't as spectacular as the omakase, they were still excellent. The sushi is always executed well, and the whole grain rice they use gives it a nuttiness that surprised me at first, but I grew to enjoy. While the sushi is the star here, we also quite liked their fried rice.

We don't live as close as we once did, so there's no telling when we'll be back - but we will. The Laughing Monk is worth the trip.

Diner Review №97

Diner Review №101

Amazing food and drinks!

Diner Review №102

Recommend the omakase, it was great. The staff is friendly and attentive. Will be back!

Diner Review №103

Omakase! This is three steps up from just sushi! Superior quality, complex flavor combinations and artistically presented made for an amazing experience. Sat at the bar and enjoyed the artisan chefs assembly as well as the large screen underwater video loop. One negative: loud very young children is a very small space! Once they left, problem solved and the atmosphere improved greatly.

Diner Review №104

I always enjoy eating in this wonderful restaurant. The shushi here is unbelievable. The test and the quality is top notch. I'm a shushi fan trying many places, but this one is unbeatable. Special thanks for chefs, Pun, P'Nick and P'Dome.

Diner Review №105

We went here after being in the area, being hungry and checking reviews. This was an awesome find. We had probably the best Pad Thai we have ever had. The Chicken Mango Curry was excellent as well and it had a nice amount of spice.

We arrived at around 5:30 and the only option was to sit at the counter and watch the sushi chefs making the sushi. The other couple at the counter (also their first visit) had ordered the chef's tasting menu and the sushi that arrived looked spectacular. One dish was topped with silver leaf, another with gold leaf. The amount of care that went into the preparation of these dishes was incredible. I would have loved to take pictures of their dishes, but it seemed rude to even ask...

We will definitely be back!

Diner Review №111

Gorgeous new little restaurant in downtown Wellesley. Had a sushi roll and a Green Curry at lunch. The space is beautiful, and at our weekday lunch almost all of the ten or so tables were full.

It's new, so still breaking in the food loses a star on a couple details that might not bother other people. First, the sushi is brown rice and seemed wetter than typical. Also, the Alaska roll was a simple presentation but more expensive than average.

The curry was a gorgeous shade of green, the vegetables absolutely crisp and perfect. The chicken was probably streamed in advance, something often done.

Service is friendly and professional but don't be on a tight schedule when you visit.

Diner Review №112

We did the Omakase at Laughing Monk and it was great! We were really excited that there was a place that did Omakase near Boston! It wasn't the best Omakase I've every had, but they did a really good job. There were lots of unique and expensive cuts and unique pairings (lot's of uni - yum!). I also liked all of the presentations (one came out in a treasure chest!) They did get started a bit late, but made up for it with the quick service. The drinks were also excellent. I would definitely go back if I were in the area. Did they accommodate for dairy free, as most of the items were dairy free anyway.

Diner Review №113

Did not expect much for any Asian fusion style of food. But this was surprisingly good. We ordered Lo Mein and Crispy roll. So tasty.

Diner Review №114

Diner Review №115

As a Wellesley resident was excited about this place, a new sushi establishment nearby. Its alright, place is small, service was fine, but I would never really come here again for "sushi". They offer only brown rice "sushi" exclusively and it's really not sushi at all even in a loose fusion sense of the cuisine; most importantly, I really don't enjoy it at all. Their Thai dishes are alright but significantly overpriced and not exceptional; there are many much better places for Thai cuisine in the area. Disappointed, we live very close, love sushi and Thai but I don't really think we would choose to come here again.

Diner Review №116

Great service, very good sushi, a little pricy, but sake price was reasonable.

We went for omakase experience.
Overall the food came out in timely manner, where the chef was making it right in front of us. It was an interesting experience to see him choose out the best of everything and carefully placing them on the plate.
I've been to other omakase's before, and overall this place's is on a bit pricier side, but they do serve every plate to be the highest grade. By the end, it was just the right amount of food, but I usually feel very full at the end of other omakase's and I do not have a big stomach.
I think it could have been filled with a bit more cheaper things that would fill me up instead of every plate using the highest grade ingredients, but this would be personal preference. Still giving 5 stars because every plate was so carefully crafted and so tasty!
also the sake price was very reasonable!

Diner Review №117

Great little place for Thai.

Diner Review №118

Great for date night. The sushi is fresh and the presentation of all the food makes the experience feel luxurious. On the pricier side but I definitely think it’s worth it!

Diner Review №119

Diner Review №120

Food was great! I had the green curry dish. Small intimate space. Only 5 /6 dining room tables. They only take reservations for sushi. We got there at 6 pm on a Thursday and didn't have to wait for a table. A little pricey but I would definitely go back.

Diner Review №121

Diner Review №122

Fantastic sushi and veggie stir fry. So so fresh, little oil. Can’t wait to go back

Diner Review №123

Ordered using the on line app. Received confirmation of my order with a message "order will take up to 45 minutes" to be ready. I showed up at the 45 minute mark to find 5 or so other parties also waiting for their pick-up. My order was eventually brought out to me 45 minutes AFTER it was supposed to be ready. In consideration for this absurd delay, I was offered a complimentary glass of water. What a joke. The food was good, not great. Certainly not worth the wait or the expensive price tag. One and done.

Diner Review №124

Fantastic food and great service. The sushi is excellent and the shrimp tempura roll may have been the best I’ve had. The kitchen menu is also excellent with a surprisingly incredible drunken noodle dish. And the blanketed shrimp are not to be missed. It’s a little on the pricey side but it’s worth it

Diner Review №125

Delicious food! I had drunken noodles vegan version and it tasted delicious and well spiced. This is my go to place now for allergen safe Thai food. Great staff and ambiance.

Diner Review №126

Diner Review №127

Salad is not fresh and the plate is chipped. Crab fired rice only has few pieces crab meat, mostly just egg white, oily and salty. Tuna nigiri is another disappointment, one of lowest quality of tuna. However, their service is good and professional. Seats are comfortable. Hope they can do better job selecting their food suppliers, serving their food as good as their prices.

Diner Review №128

Diner Review №129

I have no words to describe how good it is. Every dish is just not food, but it’s art. They look beautiful, taste delicious and the drink is top notch! The Pad Thai is flavorful and tasty. I love their drink’s menu, so creative. I ordered Kao Neaw Ma Muang (Mango Sticky Rice) cocktail and omg, sooo good. As you see I couldn’t stop myself and ordered two deserts. I have Crème brûlée and flam all the time but their “version” didn’t disappoint me. I definitely will be back to try their other amazing dishes and drinks.

Diner Review №130

BOMB!!! The big hit in town. The dinner that we couldn't stop smiling because of happiness.

Diner Review №131

Didn’t think I’d find creative food this good in Wellesley.

Diner Review №132

Some of the greatest Thai food and sushi I’ve ever eaten. Definitely would come again!

Diner Review №133

We love Laughing Monk! First time at the new location in Wellesley and won’t be our last. Only took drink photos, but trust me, the food is photo worthy too. Sushi is fantastic, apps all that and our main dishes left us satisfied. Service is fast and staff are kind. Do yourself a favor and give this place a try!

Diner Review №134

So good!

Diner Review №135

Would eat there every night of the week. My favorite type of food is Thai food and I’ve been to Thailand twice, so the bar is high. Laughing monk meets the bar and is the best Thai I’ve had stateside. The sushi is also delicious! Pad Thai is 10/10, Penang curry is also a fantastic go-to. I also quite appreciate how nice their takeout packaging is.

Diner Review №136

We started with cocktails, which were impressively unique and delicious. We then did just two pieces of the “Tasting Menu” (pictured) and those were out of this world, bursting with complex layers of flavor. The atmosphere, while small, was creatively decorated, like a place you might find in Seaport. My only criticism is that the timing of our order could have been better- we found ourselves noticing the wait between dishes. But overall, a fantastic experience. I look forward to more.

Diner Review №137

Amazing food, super fresh, wonderful cocktails

Diner Review №138

Omakase OMG!!!! Most incredible sushi I have ever experienced. The tasting menu is absolutely insane in a good way but bring your wallet. Have not tried the regular menu yet (but now most certainly will).
