Relaxed storefront spot serving classic Thai fare along with exotic flavors of housemade ice cream.
Stopped in for a quick bite at lunch in their new location a little further down on Mount Auburn Street. It is so beautiful inside, they are so nice and the food was really fresh and very good. I will definitely be back to try some new items ! I had the Pad See Ew and the crispy vegetable spring rolls (and ginger tea)... all were delicious! Can't wait to enjoy my leftovers.
Overall pretty good experience even though the waitress ignored us for a fair bit amount of time and did not take our orders. Service could be improved. Food wise was pretty good. Had khao soi brisket and boat noodles soup brisket and both with good portions. We were also pleasantly surprised by the Thai rice dessert which took some time for the to make
Everything here was creative and delicious! The crispy donuts were great to start with, the outside was perfectly crisp but the inside but nice and chewy. The oysters worked extremely well with the bean sprouts and crispy layer on the outside. I’d never think that would work but it did.
The Wagyu sliders were ok and I agree with some of the other reviews in that the buns are just so big and the meat itself is just normal, it’s definitely not “Wagyu” maybe has Wagyu oil drizzled or something.
The pad Thai and the curry were both extraordinary though. The sauces were the perfect consistency and they were a nice delicate balance of flavor.
I would highly recommend this spot to anyone in the area, it was one to remember for sure!
The food here is fantastic. Seriously. Very kind service as well. The cocktails are excellent! Our party ordered 7 different entrees and every single one was delicious. The appetizers were great too. Everything was fresh and incredibly flavorful. Some of the best Thai food I’ve had in the area. We will definitely be coming back!
Pad Thai and Kee Mao are absolutely amazing! Can’t wait to order again
Cocktails and appetizers are really good. Can’t say the same thing for Entrees, especially the pad thai and the soup noodles
The thing I always look for at a restaurant is If they serve fresh and crispy vegetables. I was pleased with how this meal was prepared. Lovely staff

I regularly order from cha yen and it is always the best—I’m writing a review because tonight I accidentally ordered a takeaway chicken massaman curry and, when I quickly realized my stupid mistake (I am vegetarian), cha yen was SO kind as to remake the order at no additional charge. above and beyond customer service—I’m really grateful. everything here is good, I think it’s the best thai in boston, and their new dining room is lovely.
I’ve been a regular for over three years, but recently, the food quality has become inconsistent and seems to be declining. In my latest order, the kee mao was bland compared to past orders, the Esarn sausage was half the usual size and lacked its signature lemongrass flavor, and the larb was dry. The boat noodles were as good as ever, but they were missing the pork rinds! I’m not sure if they’ve changed chefs, but I hope the quality returns to what it used to be.
Crab fried rice had pretty much no crab
Larb salad was good, flavorful, slightly dry
Definitely enjoyed the experience eating at this restaurant!! Food is excellent!! Vibe and music is great!!Also the decor is very nice!!! Great experience!!!
Beautiful and relaxing atmosphere, very inviting! The wagyu sliders - 10/10, the spicy tofu, 10/10, spicy vegetable fried rice was the best I’ve ever had, the salad was refreshing , great wine. Definitely my top reason to come to Watertown, thank you for being here!!
We had our company’s First Annual Holiday Party at Cha Yen Thai Cookery and could not have been more pleased with the delicious food, heart-centered service and welcoming atmosphere. Everything was perfect down to the lighting and background music and we look forward to coming back very soon! Some of us recently visited Thailand and agreed that Cha Yen is serving up AUTHENTIC Thai food! Definitely worth a visit!

I love the rice 🍚 and the burger bites they were so delicious 🤤 can’t wait to go back
Been coming here for a couple years now and we love the new location. Excellent restaurant. Everything is very well executed; the ambience, the food, the drinks, the prices, and the portions. One suggestion: the restaurant will be a lot easier to find if lights were around the sign! Other than that, highly recommend this place for authentic quality Thai.
Excellent food, service and vibe.
A+
Love this place for Thai Food! I recommend the shrimp donuts, crispy rolls and pad Thai. Their wine list was suburb. I look forward to going back. Very nice wait staff too. They care about their customers and take the time!
The food is amazing, and the atmosphere is very friendly. It's a wonderful neighborhood restaurant that I highly recommend!
The foods are fine but the owner’s sound is so annoying during my lunch.
Overall pretty good experience even though the waitress ignored us for a fair bit amount of time and did not take our orders. Service could be improved. Food wise was pretty good. Had khao soi brisket and boat noodles soup brisket and both with good portions. We were also pleasantly surprised by the Thai rice dessert which took some time for the to make
This place has been so inconsistent and trending down, visit after visit.
Most recent visit was enough to be the last straw.
Customizations like spice level and substituting sauces goes unnoticed.
I don’t know what the ingredients are that goes into making their curries and rice dishes, but it’s enough to make you queasy.
Whether it’s an overkill of fish sauce, MSG, low-grade oils. Whatever the case may be, there’s something That doesn’t suit the digestion.
Corn Fritter Appetizers are super greasy and overcooked…
I’m not paying $70.00+ dollars for a dinner for two, Only to be sick and on the toilet at the end of the night.
This is such an excellent spot. I really appreciate having such a wonderful neighborhood restaurant, with lovely staff and excellent, quick food.
But I wish they would bring back the non-fried poh piah! What a fantastic and healthy dish.
Small portions that taste like soap was added. My food came out wrong and the manager accused me of lying saying I never asked for no egg! He wasn’t even the one to take my order! We won’t be back.
The food is out of this world. EVERYTHING is delicious, We had a table of 4 people and I tried everything everyone ordered, ALL was fantastic. I could not recommend this more. Really do yourself a favor and book a meal here, You'll thank me later. 😉
Drinks arrived after food, soup arrived after main course. Fried cod was cremated. Green curry too thick and beef was like shoe Rice came last. Beer cans exploded when opened. Very disappointed
Great Thai food in a nice atmosphere. Beware of the double star dishes - very spicy!
Update 2024. Our favorite Thai food in near Belmont. The food is fantastic. So flavorful and fresh.
Best in the area, highly recommend,
I would dine here again. Friendly service and great food
Food is always consistent and delicious!
Not even one star. I am never ever going to that restaurant again. I ordered food for me and my daughter and it tasted like there was some chemically substance in it, almost like a dish washing liquid. I called them and told them the issue, they refused to refund me the $12.00. Terrible, nasty customer service. Such a bad experience. I absolutely do not recommend that restaurant. The food is dirty, unhealthy and full of chemicals plus the customer service is super so bad.
Absolute favorite Thai food ever. We eat here weekly because it’s so good. Love the unique appetizers and solid staples like pad Thai, pad see ew, and curries. Can’t get enough, highly recommend!
One of the tastiest Thai places in the Boston area! The homemade ice cream was a treat can't wait to go back and try more.
Kee Mao and grilled vegetables were great. The pad see ew unfortunately smelled and tasted not so great :/
The best Thai food around! Whenever we are within 30 minutes away, we make it a point to stop here. We especially love the cashew nut and kapow stir fry
We had one of the best Thai meals here. Papaya salad, mushroom shrimp Tom yum soup, mushroom larb, grilled chicken. Everything had such distinct, fresh flavor. The Thai tea lemonade was incredible. I would go just for that. Then… we had mango sticky rice and black sesame ice cream! I am sorry I didn’t take more pix! This is an amazing lunch spot.
We dine in and order to take out all the time. 4sure the best Thai place in the Boston metro area. Updated a few years later- still the best in Boston metro area.
We have LOVED Cha Yen every time. I'd recommend the Roti starter, Papaya salad, pineapple Curry, Chicken Satay, and (pictured here) the Khao Soi Brisket 🥵 I couldn't get enough. Wonderful flavors, great spice, great variety.
Side note: it's a smaller restaurant, so expect it to be a bit loud inside, but not too bad. Worth it to book ahead!
The food was amazing and the service was A+
I ordered the cashew chicken and it had no cashews. The basil vegetable only has eggplant and the order was taken incorrectly as they forgot to add the extra vegetables. Poor service. Will not order from this place again. Please don't waste your time and money. On complaining they are not ready to accept their mistake.
Love this place for it's food but wish it wasn't always so sweet. At least the dishes I have tried Boat soup and the coconut soup.
Amazing food and service, delicious every time! The best in the Boston area!
Amazing food. Worth the short drive from Cambridge.
We've been going to Cha Yen regularly since they opened, and their Thai food is a blessing to the Watertown community! The food is always delicious and fresh, and they are excellent at accommodating substitutions. We normally do takeout, but dine in is also great and we can't wait until they open their larger space across the street. If you are looking for excellent Thai food, give Cha Yen a chance!
I’ve tried almost every Thai restaurant in and around the Boston around and this place needs to be on TOP of the list! The restaurant is small but expanding in a bigger space because demand is growing. The dishes I tried there were all incredible. Everything was hot, flavorful, and I felt like they made things in a healthy way without excess oil. I highly recommend the chicken wings, the papaya salad, the roti with chicken curry sauce, the soups, cashew nut chicken and noodles. We also tried the homemade coconut ice cream which had little pieces of coconut in there and was so delicious. This place is 10/10 for me.
We have visited 3 times and the first two times were great. Ordered green curry and pad thai for my daughter. Eggplant for my mom. Service was ok. Second time we ordered sticky rice and it never came. So we csnxelled it. Gave the place 5/5 still. The third time we went on a Friday night and it was a totally different experience. Ordered the short rib which were delicious in flavor and super tender, but so salty I could barely eat them. In contrast the pad thai was so sweet and mushy my poor daughter could not eat most of it. My 12 yo daughter has never refused pad thai. It is her favorite food. We could not even complain about it because no one ever came to check on how the food was. I was about to cancel the sticky rice order because we wanted to leave so badly, but my poor child was so hungry she was happy to eat her sticky rice to offset the sugar in her pad thai which she did not even want to bring home. Not sure if the weekend cook is a different cook, but the service and food was so disappointing I had to change my original review. Not sure if I want to come back.
Food was delicious and fresh.
I had the Pla pad kun chai at the recommendation of the waitress. It did not disappoint! It was crispy with the right amount of spice.
The homemade Thai tea ice cream is also delicious.
This place is amazing! I’ve been here over 20 times and the food is consistently fantastic. Wait staff is so nice and professional. It’s hard to work at a place that typically gets one huge rush a day but they are so great and the food always shines.
Cha Yen Thai Cookery is exactly what you’re looking for if you want quality food at a good price! The food came out very fast and hot, despite it being a busy night. We ordered the See Ew and Green Curry with Tofu, both of which tasted amazing! I’m not a food connoisseur by any means, that being said, the food was delicious by our standards! It is located in a small spot in Watertown, so the seating arrangement wasn’t necessarily the best. We got sat near the door, so we had to eat with our coats on. Service was okay, but we did get what we needed, when we needed it. The restaurant itself isn’t aesthetically “traditional” either, but let be honest, we were there to eat! The food speaks for itself. Cha Yen is definitely a little gem in our backyard, can’t wait to be back!
Just ordered a vegetarian pad Thai for take out. It was delicious! Will definitely order again and would recommend.
Decent Thai place. Some of the dishes were great, some of them were not. I highly recommend the drunken noodles and fried rice. I had the drunken noodles with duck and it was super good. The corn fritters were also great but the dipping sauce was too sweet/syrupy.
The quail eggs weren’t anything special. It tastes exactly how it appears: like a small fried egg with soy glaze. The roti was super good and flaky but unfortunately the curry dipping sauce was cold — not even lukewarm but refrigerated cold. It would’ve been great had it been heated up. The papaya salad was missing dried shrimp like it traditionally should have.
We ate here for lunch and the server was hard to reach at times. Overall, not the best thai food in Boston but there were definitely some great dishes. I would order from here again since its close by to me.
Good Thai food and good people
I love Cha Yen! I go here at least twice a week for lunch and the food is great! The staff are very nice as well and they’re very quick. Thanks for the tasty Thai food!
Incredibly consistent and solid Thai spot. Service is always great 👍 the food tastes top notch. I love the khao soi
Amazing Thai Food, some of the best I've had, the servers are very polite and the value is unbeatable.
One of the best Thai restaurants we have eaten outside of Thailand! The Khao Soi is delicious. Ate here three days in a row while visiting Boston.
The best Thai place in MA! The staff are super sweet and the food, which is more than fairly priced, is always delicious.
A quaint upgrade from your usual neighborhood Thai spot, offering a charming café ambiance.
Cha Yen was one of the first restaurants l've been to in the city, so I recently came back out of nostalgia. I really liked its casual cafe-like atmosphere, but having tried some amazing Thai restaurants in Brookline and Brighton, I was a bit disappointed with their food.
The appetizers I had were just okay. Curry puff had meager amount of fillings, making it slightly bland. Shrimp donut was better, but the shrimp paste inside was a bit undercooked. It was also not very flavorful, but the plum dressing added a pleasant hint of sweetness and tang.
For the entree, I had the Roast duck and the Pad Thai. Crispy Broccolini and soy marinated eggs were excellent accompaniments with the fatty duck pieces, so the Roasted duck was my favorite from the meal. Pad Thai was just solid.
Among Thai food options in Watertown, Cha Yen is undoubtedly a great option. However, if you would like to try something more authentic and trendy, I would recommend going across the river to try them.
Absolutely love this place great food great people! The grilled beef and the panang curry are must try’s!
You didn’t even give us a chance!
So, it was Sunday late afternoon (around 6PM). We didn’t feel like cooking and wanted to check out this place. It all started with my wife being told to “hold on” till all of us were present. Ok, fine I get that (although I was just parking outside). Finally we all are there there – party of 2 adults plus our four-year-old. To my huge surprise we were told that we must wait (15-20 minutes) as there is no table for 3. We point out to couple of free tables – BTW it was not that busy and couple of tables were free – and what we hear – you still need to wait since those tables are for 4 people…
Half empty restaurant, free tables, not busy at all and you told us to wait (no one else was waiting for a table, it was just us) and yet you told us to wait and wait.
I really struggle to understand how you conduct your business.
We wanted to try your place but you simply didn’t give us a chance!
Best Thai food in greater Boston. Definitely worth trying!
Best Thai food in Boston! We travel all the way from Kendal Square to eat here. We’ve tried other spots that are good, but Cha Yen is hands down #1.
Grilled beef is so tasty! I wish they make it less salty though
OK—it’s time.
I come here multiple times per month for some dinner takeout.
We drive from a whopping 50 minutes away JUST FOR THEIR THAI.
We order $75.00 worth of food each time we go.
The consistency is always a toss up
Corn cakes 75% of the time is over battered and over cooked. Mostly a medium brown deep fried crack your tooth crunch with dried up/burn kernels inside. It’s a shot in the dark that it’ll be cooked properly.
The portions run very small for their price points
FILL THE CONTAINERS!
If you’re a “1 size fits all” order of rice for $16 you better have it’s packed tight with the rice and the proteins you ordered.
I can prep a full fresh chicken and crock pot of rice for the price of an add on here.
That’s absurd!
And I know you know it to be so…
If we’re paying for extra sauce—Fill it to the top or get bigger condiment cups.
You’re not fooling your customers by these price cutting measures.
You just end up losing business
Loved it. We had the chicken massaman curry and beef kee mao. Both were excellent -- really flavorful, quality ingredients, and good-sized portions. And very reasonably priced! Good service too and pleasant dining atmosphere. Would definitely come back.
Absolutely one of my favorite places to eat in the Boston area.
Quick review:
10/10!
Pros:
+Great food
+Great/friendly service
+Family friendly
+Date approved
Cons
-a tad small
-hard to find parking
Overview:
I have only been here once but it was quite the first impression! The host made sure we were very comfortable and made sure that our party of 11 had enough room. He checked on us throughout our meal without being bothersome. I would highly recommend this area if you are in the area. Although when it becomes popular i can see it might become an issue with lack of space 😅.
We loved food here. Great service. Early lunch so wasn't busy.
Best Thai food bar none
Solid Thai food for the area, could find better if you're willing to expand your search. Come here for the ice cream, just let it warm up a tad before you eat it.
There was a shard of wood and a hair in our food. I’m bummed to say overall the quality wasn’t great, though it was very cheap.
味道相当正宗的泰餐。必须五星好评!
Best papaya salad we've had outside of Thailand. If you want to eat real Thai food this is the place to go.
Love anything with basil at this restaurant! It’s so affordable (most dishes are $10) and portion sizes are great. We typically order basil fried rice, pad kee mao, pad see ew, green curry, red curry, and the Thai iced tea. The iced tea here is delicious!
We had take out from here yesterday and really enjoyed our food. We tried the pad Thai with tofu, as well as the basil fried rice, pineapple fried rice and red curry, all with chicken. Everything was delicious and fresh! We’ve been looking for a new go-to Thai restaurant since moving away from our old favorite, and we may have found it here.
the worker serving us was very nice and kept checking up on us in case we needed anything. music was great :)
Amazing pad thai!
Was looking forward to trying this place out. I order pad Thai kind of specifically (to be honest). I get fried tofu instead of chicken or shrimp. A lot of places assume this to be just vegetarian pad Thai. I called to place an order to specifically say I wanted regular pad Thai with tofu, not vegetarian pad Thai. Whelp, they gave me veggie pad Thai. This is the only place to do this after my request, everyone else understood. They said I could return for a refund but it was 25 minutes away and I decided against it. I’m gonna post the pic here to prove to them I didn’t eat it (they doubted me when I called them). Guys I think vegetarian pad Thai is absolutely disgusting. I wouldn’t touch it and I’m never going to come back here again.
Delicious and great service.
The taste is good but the food portions are so ridiculously small
Great place for Thai food. Love their basil fried rice
Updated: Came back here again and gave it another try. The shrimp donut was good, a little bit burnt that I could taste the bitterness. The Khao Soi was okay, and the Spicy noodle soup was a bit salty. It was still consistent with my last experience, but the flavor did improve a little bit, so I bumped it up a star here, but still a weak 4 imo.
===============
Checked out this place since I live close by, and mostly due to the reviews. However, I was unfortunately fairly disappointed with the results. My friend and I also came here after a 4-hour winter hike, so we were exhausted and hungry, so any food would do us wonder then. Sadly, it was only ok.
I ordered the Kao Soi, and my friend ordered the Spicy Noodle Soup. The Kao Soi was quite salty, and didn't taste flavorful. The brisket was a hit or miss, some pieces were tender, some pieces were dry. The dry egg noodle was also bland. My friend didn't like like his spicy noodle as well, I tried it the broth was also really bland. The only good one (that I forgot to take pictures of) was their grilled beef. Very tender and well seasoned.
I would go here again to prove myself wrong, as I do like the vibe and want to support local restaurants. Hopefully it will be a better experience next time.
This place is a hidden gem! It’s never too busy on weekends during lunch, which is crazy because it’s delicious! I love the Galangal soup and the noodle dishes. It’s so affordable as well.
Yummy food. Portions were just right - not too big, not too small. Prices were reasonable also. But most importantly, yummy food!!
literally the best takeout I’ve ever eaten. Usually not a fan of ground chicken but I can’t get enough of it here. the prices are such a steal i would easily pay double for how yummy it is and how generous the portions are. Delivery driver is always super friendly. Flavors can vary week to week but I’ve yet to not enjoy every single bite. Seriously it’s like eating out of grandmas kitchen.
By far one of the best Thai restaurants I have been to. Food delicious and there is a variety. Service a bit slow but kind of nice because they don't rush you.
Came here after seeing a few mouth-watering photos and was not disappointed. Came as a party of two shortly after they opened on a Saturday and was seated right away.
We ordered the Curry Puffs and Roti, as well as Thai Tea Lemonade and Kee Mao with Chicken. The lemonade was unlike anything I've had before, but I think I'd opt for a classic Thai Iced Tea for next time. The curry puffs came with a tangy sauce, but even without it, they were delicious. The roti came with a curry sauce, and were perfectly crispy yet chewy. The Kee Mao ended up being too spicy for me (which I should've anticipated because of the three pepper signs on the menu), but from the bite that I had, it was pretty yummy.
I wasn't too hungry when we came, so just the appetizers were enough to satisfy, but I'll definitely come with an empty stomach next time! Overall, a really enjoyable and surprisingly well-priced meal.
No better spot for Thai in my mind. Great food, wonderful staff, clean restaurant, good value. What more are you looking for?
Great curry, reasonably priced with great service. Quickly becoming my go to Thai place.
BEST thai food in the greater Boston area. Hands down. Quality is consistent, fresh and always satisfying. Get the Mango Salmon Salad!!
Best Larb I've ever had. Short ribs are AMAZING
My boyfriend and I have had take out several times over the past few months. We have been very impressed! All the curries are delicious and the sauce is thick and rich! We particularly liked the yellow curry with pineapple and the massaman. The grilled specialties including the steak and chicken are fresh and cooked to order! Both times they cooked my steak exactly medium rare which was impressive for a take- out joint. The gai yang and yaki soba were also interesting and delicious entrees were both hadn’t tried at any other Thai restaurant as well. The only disappointing item was the poh piah as they immediately fell apart since the wrapper was so delicate. In addition, they do not include a lot of protein in the curries/noodle dishes and that I the dishes are fairly expensive. It’s usually around 50-60$ for 3 adult sized portions. Nonetheless, we will continue to enjoy the delicious and fresh food cooked at Cha Yen!
Delicious! The chicken pad Thai is my favorite dish.
The taste is great. Donuts with shrimps worth trying. We ordered pick up. No plastic ware to eat, no sticks, no napkins…
why?(
and duck liquid out from the paper bag, made it wet and spoil the car carpet….
I can't believe I don't hear more about this place. Not only is the menu unique and filled with deep cuts not normally found at your typical Thai restaurant, but everything they make is executed perfectly. These pros make everything on the menu well, but the boat noodles, shrimp donuts, and See Ew are exceptional. Oh, and Thai ice cream? Don't sleep on this gem.
I got their chicken fried rice and it’s one of the best fried rice recipes ive ever had. I dont know what sauce they put but it’s delicious 😋! New favorite fried rice spot and I come here often for lunch / dinner. I will be going back to try more things. Try it!
Have been eating here so many times! Never get disappointed! Authentic Thai food, fresh ingredients! Some food might be a little bit too spicy for me but I still love them!!
Food was awesome ;)
Food here has more sweetness than flavour. The fried rice was decent. Inexpensive food.
Best drunken noodles (Kee Mao) in Boston
Ordered a noodle soup and was very pleased with quality, price and service. Would highly recommend.
I love their country padthai very much 😋
Best restaurant in Watertown. A weekly staple when I lived in the neighborhood. Amazing flavors all around. Recently ordered the Pla pad kun chai and the fish was so crispy and gingery!
Small place with good food and good service. There is an authentic feel to the menu. A must try.
Our Favorite Thai restaurant around. Having visited multiple areas of Thailand, this food is not only traditional cuisine, but also made with high quality ingredients. They used to be BYOB, but now they have their own wines and beer.
Must Tries:
Corn Cakes
Shrimp Donuts
Khao Soi
Boat Noodle
Awesome spot. One of the yummiest and most reasonably priced Asian restaurants I’ve found in the Boston area. Recommend.
Not only was the food we ordered pretty much perfect (and tasted very flavourful), but it was very well priced too. Will definitely go back.
Probably I have dinned in this place the most in my whole life. It looks very casual but the food is extremely good and exquisite. It easily outshines other thai restaurants I have tried in the world. The star of their menu is corn cake, spicy fried dumplings, and grilled beef.
Ordered both the pad thai (w/ chicken) and pad see ew (w/ tofu).
Pad Thai was good but nothing special. They give you a good amount so it's satisfying for one meal. The chicken was a bit dry though.
The pad see ew was the best I've ever had. Super flavorful - especially the tofu. Would get it again in a heart beat. The only thing is that it's the same price as the pad Thai...but it's half the size with not much noodles. Would have to buy 2 plates of pad see ew to be full.
