Sprawling landmark since 1950 offering Asian meals, mai tais & comedy amid kitschy Polynesian decor.
Kowloon is FOREVER one of my favorite places to eat. Treated myself to a meal on my birthday on 1Feb. Didn't like that I couldn't get the expanded menu but it was kind of understandable as it was approaching dinner time on a Saturday and I was eating alone. Food was still excellent and service was great!! Lobster sauce is amazing. My server let me get the Lobster sauce on the side even though it typically isn't allowed on the limited menu. Still a great experience!!!
Food, service, and location were all good. Ordered a feast and brought home plenty of leftovers.
However I have to dock one star with the following note. Please know this location is not capable of accepting smart chip enabled credit cards at their POS devices. Please check your credit card's security policies before eating here.
My wife's card worked to pay for the meal but for anyone else looking to avoid a potentially embarassing situation.
Hello Photo Booth Rental had the pleasure of being part of the Bacardi event hosted at Kowloon Restaurant in Saugus, and it was an unforgettable experience! The venue’s iconic charm and vibrant atmosphere set the perfect stage for an exciting and lively event.
Kowloon’s team went above and beyond to ensure every detail was taken care of. From their attentive staff to their seamless coordination, the level of professionalism and care they showed truly stood out. It was clear that their team is highly experienced in hosting events of this scale and energy.
The food and drinks were exceptional, as always, and complemented the Bacardi theme perfectly. The unique ambiance of Kowloon added a special touch, creating a dynamic setting where guests could enjoy the festivities and make lasting memories.
Our photo booth was a hit, and the support from Kowloon’s team made our job easy and enjoyable. Their commitment to making the event a success was evident, and we were honored to be part of such a fantastic celebration.
Thank you, Kowloon Restaurant, for hosting an incredible Bacardi event! We’re already looking forward to working with your team again for future events at this one-of-a-kind venue.
Kowloon has been a part of my life for 40+years. Kowloon is a North Shore restaurant tradition for being a destination for celebration and joyful dining, serving very traditional New England style Asian, Hawaiian and South Pacific cuisine. Perfect for an intimate dinner or group celebration. Thank you to the Wong Family for their decades of excellence.
Worth a visit for the classic setting, but have realistic expectations about the food—which could be better. Took my adult son here for a fun birthday dinner. The Tiki bar setting is worth experiencing. Get a seat near the fountains if you can. The drinks aren’t bad for the price. But the food was somewhat disappointing. Avoid the Kowloon Adventure appetizer plate. To be fair, the menu descriptions were accurate. The pork strips were just that. Sliced pork with some color added to the edges, but plain, unmarinated, and pretty dry. The crispy wontons look like they should have some filling, but they don’t—just deep fried wonton skins. The eggrolls weren’t bad, and the ribs were decent, but not good enough to make the platter worth it. The shrimp with lobster sauce was okay, a solid black bean sauce with some lobster flavor and a few pieces of lobster meat. The sweet and sour chicken wasn’t bad either. Large fried chicken tenders with a sauce that was more on the sweet side. The food was served pretty quickly, with the appetizers and the entrees coming out all at once, but everything was hot and nicely prepared. Just not the greatest tastes. So maybe visit here mostly to experience the atmosphere, be careful what you order, and don’t expect a lot from the food.
This was such a disappointment for a Chinese restaurant. I'm very much surprised by the wall of celebs that have visited. Like many others, I was captivated by the large restaurant and the vibe. However, I was quickly disappointed by the food.
It is heavily overpriced. We had ordered Green Curry and Gen Kow's Chicken. We were surprised that it didn't come with rice? NEVER IN MY LIFE have I have ever been at a Chinese restaurant that served a plate of chicken or curry with no rice. They charged an additional $4.50 for a bowl of rice.
The food was very sweet and difficult to finish. The chicken had a slightly funky smell as it may appeared to have been sitting there for quite some time where it may have been masked with the sweet sauce.
I don't recommend this place to anyone! You get better Chinese food at your local small shops and a bonus, it COMES WITH RICE. You're definitely paying for the ambiance as the food is at its lowest rating for me.
I had a nice dinner here with my family. We ordered Chinese vegetable soup, Chinese chicken wonton soup, fried rice with vegetables, beef teriyaki nuggets, Kung Pao chicken, beef with vegetables, two sushi rolls with unagi and spicy tuna, and fried ice cream. The food was delicious, with the exception of the fried rice, and the atmosphere and service were excellent. The restaurant is spacious with abundant parking. We had a wonderful time.
Excellent food and service.
Very busy but surprisingly quick service. We initially placed an order but changed our mind after the server had left. Server was quite accommodating and took care of our request. Taste and quality of the food was to our satisfaction
Craaaazy prices for what you get…
Freaking amazing! The atmosphere the food, the waiter just everything was spot on. Perfect I can’t wait to go back. They really do it right there. I loved every little bit the best egg rolls I’ve ever had in my life! And the waiter was so accommodating and so punctual and so courteous it was just a great experience. I will go back again and I live far away. I’ll drive out
there just to go there. Oh, in the scorpion bowl and the mai tai the passionfruit mai Thai was amazing! A must try!
Simply the best....better than all the rest!

If you have never been here then your from another planet. Great place all around
Nothing more North Shore!
Great time , great service , always amazing food , BEWARE THE THAI FOOD KITCHEN OPENS AT 2PM
Nothing special, haven't been there for a long, a sure reminder why, food is less than average in my opinion and pricey too.
This is an iconic place. I remember going there back in the 1980s. Their food is phenomenal. Best place for oriental food, bar none. I dinged it in the review because the owners have not kept it up. It's dingy, worn, and beat up. I don't think they've renovated since I first visited back in the 1980s. Considering the high volume of customers all day every day, and the relatively steep prices, they can certainly afford to update their decor, carpets, and tables. Having said that, I still stop in when in the area. It's comfort food and a love/hate relationship. You have to try it out even if it's just to say you've "been there."
Atmosphere is everything, but so is delicious food!
You get the best of both worlds at Kowloon! I cannot pick one particular dish to rate.
Every dish we have tried was phenomenal.
If you want the visual experience and the taste, hands down, it’s Kowloon.
It's Americanized Chinese food. One of the very first. You go here as an event, and that event is Americanized Chinese food. It's an authentic experience- and that experience is the world as envisioned in a 1960s Bond Movie or Disney world. This is NOT to say that it is bad. It is great!
Food, service, and location were all good. Ordered a feast and brought home plenty of leftovers.

Gonna miss this wonderful, New England staple.
It was fantastic! This was my first time here - which is ridiculous, because I have been familiar with it for YEARS - and it did not disappoint! We were a party of nine, and they not only managed to find a table for us walking in on a Saturday night, but they accommodated one of my friends who is using a cane. The drinks were delicious, the food came out fast, and the staff was fantastic! I ate all of my beef dish - it was so good! It will not be the last time I go. :)
I'm super disappointed in how much this restaurant has changed! The prices are higher than they really should be. The amount of food u get it not even close to the price u pay for it.
The food tasted ok, but again, the quality was not there in the amount or in the taste.
North shore sample, can't be beat. Gin the server is a national treasure.
I want there with a family member. I didn't purchase anything. I ate there 14 years ago and made up my mind to never go back. Once again, I will never enter this restaurant or any franchise again. Ever if someone is known, suggest it to me.
How can you not like the Kowloon. Good campy fun. It's an OG type tiki)Asian place. Food is definitely better than you would expect! Hurry before it closes
Excellent food! Fun attitude service and great atmosphere. Will come back again!
Nothing special. Service sub-par.
Fast service, great food, great place!
We as a family like the food at Kawloon. This time we went to this restaurant in Saugus MA for dinner. The host was nice and welcoming but the server was the worst. In the beginning, he brought the iced water holding the glass on its tip(hygiene) then after our meal was on the table the server didn't come to ask if we needed something else. We had to wait a while to get additional drinks. Once we placed our order for drinks, he brought our drinks in a disposable cup like in a fast-food restaurant, which is disrespectful.
Because of these poor customer services, I cut 2% from his tip. On our way out the server whispered to us “Cheep” and we felt sad.
I hope the manager of this restaurant should put this server in some sort of training.

Love coming back to this place again and again. Great food, service and atmosphere. Great on a date or a family function.
Good service and real good food will be comin back
It's an experience and more than just the food.
My review might be skewed but the fact that my dinner was paid for by Keno winnings!!
The food and service were really bad.
Okay, well... I was in town and decided to try it mostly from hearing about it for years on the Howie Carr show. I have to admit, I expected it to be really good! But the food came out luke-warm at best... I had the sweet and sour chicken, and ordered the chicken fingers for a side. I didn't realize that the chicken fingers and the chicken served with the sweet and sour chicken would be the exact same breaded chicken. This is probably my own fault, but I was hoping for chunks of grilled chicken to be served with the main dish. Service was fast, but overall not great because they allowed cold food to be served. The atmosphere was VERY dated, and included being sat right next to an indoor water fountain, which was noisy and kinda smelled.
I dunno, I just had high expectations. This place was definitely below average in my opinion.
Food is overall good, not amazing, but its a great place for party or dinner for two. What is 5 starts at Kowloon it the Saugus WIngs (9.1) on wing scale.
Food was pretty good, but not the greatest. Although, my daughters Boston Grilled Maki was really awesome, my Pad Thai was just ok. Drinks were decent and they had all the classics. But the atmosphere is really a trip and what makes this place fun. The OLD south pacific vibes are strong. Need to go back and try more items as the menu is extensive!
Always incredible
Disgusting greasy old. Drinks are made with crushed ice and taste horrible. Do NOT GO! Rip off disgusting disgusting disgusting nasty and gross. Spent $90/pp for new years. 4 tickets…WASTE OF MONEY. SUCKED. WANT MY MONEY BACK. DISGUSTING GREASY GROSS
The food is always very, very good. The mixed drinks are are some of the best around. The atmosphere is old time Chinese style restaurant. It's a personal love of mine.
It's been a while since I've been to Kowloon's but the food was just as amazing as I remember. Our server was great and made us laugh with each visit to our table. It won't be long before I'm visiting again.
Wonderful experience on New Years Eve. We were able to get a table, and everyone was Wonderful, food was amazing.
The food was just ok. There was nothing explicitly wrong with it, but it was bland and I expected more based on the cost. I imagine one is probably paying for the atmosphere. The cocktails were surprisingly decent. The staff was friendly and attentive.
Kowloons never disappoints me.
Fun atmosphere, great staff and the Polynesian style Chinese food and beverages that I miss when traveling.
Food was ok. Place was crowded as usual and staff was attentive and nice

Loved the food and the great service.
One of the best Chinese restaurants around.
ABSOLUTELY TOP NOTCH DINING EXPERIENCE!
This was worth every penny plus more!
Lunch plates
We picked up and ate at home. Never regret ordering from here. 💖
Best service ever highly recommend to all ages
Tremendous service!
Such a fun spot! Yummy food and strong drinks.
Great food, always tastes fresh.
When I pay 1650 for a order of chicken and rice, I expect it to come with rice.
Then I asked for some rice. They put it in a bag that it was enough rice to feed a family of 10. He charged me $27. OMG How dare they take advantage of me and charge my credit card That kind of fefen money, I am pissed How dare they charge my credit card that all that money.... I think I'm gonna have the inspector go there. I'm sure they'll find something wrong to close that place down. How dare they do that to me?
Went for lunch for my moms birthday. First time going to Kowloon's despite driving by it for years upon years. I was immediately shocked with the interior and how fun it was!!
Bob brought us to our table and he was soooo friendly and really tried to be friends with my toddler, which was appreciated.
Food was pretty good too
I was very disappointed ! Chicken fingers were warm at best , ribs had a funny taste to them , crab Rangoon had no filling in it , if that what it was? No Fortune cookies and it was very overpriced. I have always been very happy in the past I don’t know what happened.
We stopped by randomly, being captivated by the large storefront of the restaurant. The atmosphere is really nice, the table is comfortable, and there’s plenty of choice, except for the mocktails. It’s not gourmet as one might wish, but the food is good, the portion are generous and the service is friendly. It was a pleasant experience overall.
The food amazing..the atmosphere amazing. Service amazing. This place is closing i came from nyc i would def recommend everyone to try this at least once
Great drinks, they were very accommodating to our seating request. Good was very good.
We were here for Thanksgiving. Food was good. Service was slow.
Really slow!
It’s literally the best Chinese food in America idk what else to say
Haven’t been to this place in years , back when it was fairly decent , now the last two times I’ve patronized this place , never/ ever again ! The food just sucks …. but what do ya expect , it’ changed ! Not the same decent people , just Mexican short order cook !
Worst $110 I’ve spent
Food was terrible
Santa
During the busy times it’s hard to get good quality food and service. The atmosphere is fun. The food selection and options are excellent. Great venue for large parties.
Awesome food and fast and friendly service. 5 stars 🌟
sorry but the food is dry gross and disgusting. Drinks are ok.
I like that they are open until 12:30 am and the Goose and Juice drink was awesome 🥂
The food was absolutely amazing, I’m so happy I came. While I ordered my sushi the chef was switching so I had to wait but they gave me 2 free things for waiting. The servers are so kind and it’s kid friendly. The environment is filled with really cool decor and it’s over all an amazing experience!

Recently had my reunion there. $70 a head. They brought out the food we paid for for just one hour then took it away. We definitely didn't get our moneys worth. Leave the food when people pay for it!
Wow, the atmosphere is crazy! You could get lost in here with all of the different rooms/areas. Very cool. You can tell a lot of effort is put into the decor and maintaining the huge building. The food was great - typical Asian cuisine that you might order at a restaurant, but the atmosphere and service really set Kowloon apart.
Love Kowloon! My all time favorite Chinese food restaurant!
Too expensive, greasy, funky favored fried rice, the chicken finger were shocking, a piece of chicken the size of my baby finger an so much greasy batter the size of my hand, just gross. Kung Pao chicken was it a soupy sauce that was not very appealing. Was here as a kid and it was fun - fast forward 30 years and it sucks!
The place was packed but the food was good. Waiter was a little over worked
I was there with my fiance and a friend of mine , my friend was treating me to dinner because my grandfather passed away earlier that day , we and a server named Kevin who was incredibly friendly and fast with our food and drinks , if the owners see this I want you to thank this man personally , thanks Kevin
We ordered beef satay general chicken crab Rangoon broccoli garlic and rice and we loved it. We were seeing the building while driving and decided to try it, glad we tried. Chickens doesn’t come with rice but comes a lot. Even for 2 person. Nice ambiance with the Christmas lights. Highly recommended. Didn’t understand the 4.2 ratings should be more. Ps: Crab rangoon is delicious!
Outdated atmosphere with plans of the facility being demolished and rebuilt in June 2024.
Because we had two toddlers they had us sit away from the main restaurant in a corner
Very bad service. Server name kevin not very approachable and never smile. And this chinese lady short hair idk if she's one of the server or just helping she is very rude. And giving wrong order and when we told her it was wrong order she just ignores us. VERY VERY BAD SERVICE!
I had low expectations with the food based on reading reviews. It was worse than i expected. Quite possibly the worst food i’ve had at a restaurant. Microwavable frozen food from walmart tastes better. I went for the atmosphere, but it wasnt anything special either.
Everything we ordered was way below average or just plain gross. I was surprised when I was served this tasteless, messy, slurry of wet cabbage when I ordered chow mein. I guess that is "new england style." There were a ton of people there, but after we finished it made sense when I realized I hadn't seen a single Asian person other than the staff.
Great service and delicious food ❤️
Service was incredible, but the food was terrible. We decided not to cook and go out for Thanksgiving. It was so oily and had a burnt taste. We come here frequently enough but will not in the future. I'm very disappointed.
Only great things to say about this place. If you want ok Chinese food with a GREAT atmosphere and great service you have come to the right place. Yeah their are better tasting food joints out there, but nothing that looks like this and can easily accommodate a party of 20 showing up randomly.
We went for a late lunch 2:30p. I had never been, my 2 friends had been years prior. We all left happy, fed and satisfied. I thought the food was yummy. We got a Pupu Platter with beef teriyaki, general gao chicken (not spicy), chicken fried rice and crab rangoon. Some Tate's were new for me but not a bad thing, just different then chinese food I have had in the Beverly/Salem/Danvers area. I didn't feel Kowloon was as awful as I have heard it to be. I did enjoy the atmosphere very much.
Greatly disappointed ... used to be the best chinese food in the whole state, travelled an hour because I thought I was treating myself and a few friends. Went last night, and its just not worth it anymore. Not sure what happened but they've changed a lot of the food. Its super sad and I unfortunately won't be back.
Love Kowloons. Teriyaki tasted "off " hope they haven't changed the recipe. All the other food was great
You know what? I had a pretty good time at the Kowloon. It's a decent place. Go in knowing what to expect and you won't be disappointed!
Very good chefs
If you're from the area you know all about the Kowloon. We only started going recently and have already become regulars. The vibe in the bar is always great, the service is incredible, and the food is very consistent. We will be back.
Hot and sour Soup was okay. Crab rangoons not so good. And the egg rolls were the worst I've had better. Eastern paradise makes better Chinese food.
Best Chinese food
Excelente presentacion. Muy buena comida. Variedad y esquisito sabor.
I believe it’s perhaps not as good as back in the day
Hoy me toco mala atención.
We come from Florida just to eat here...it's a must.
I was told this place is an institution on the north shore and i can see why. We showed up on a Saturday night prime time and i don’t think I’ve ever seen that many people in a restaurant at one time. Despite that we only had to wait about 20 min which was great.
All of the food we got was really good and honestly some of the better Chinese food I’ve had. The service was excellent as well. I would definitely come back again
Great food been around for years wish they would open one in Orlando fl
Food very expensive, compared to other Chinise res. Guess your paying for the 5 bars and waterfall . Got to say it was beautiful, rather have cheaper meals not pay for every little thing you get.
La comida estaba recalentada y casi no se podía comer de lo dura que estaba y me cobraron 2 veces mi comida muy malo el restaurante no lo recomiendo!
La comida estaba fatal no la recomiendo no vayan ahí me cobraron 2 veces la comida!
Horrible food we'll not be going back
You HAVE to go there! Good was great!!
A new england classic been open since before I was born and Im no kid really cool inside can seat 500 people easily there's every a giant boat inside you can sit in the food and drinks top notch some of the best east coast style Chinese food don't be surprised if you see a celebrity try a pupu plater and a mai tai or scorpion bowl or any classic chinese drink sweet and sour chicken is great also and don't sleep on this place like the hilltop and the other great large independent restaurants on rt 1 they will be closing soon so they can build big condos and then have a small restaurant that will look nothing like this old school gem the older generation is getting older and like most gentrification the kids don't want to run a giant restaurant just collect rent checks and probably keep 25% of the staff the older owners would be there every day and greet you on the way in I'm sure the food will still be good but definitely won't be the same sad to see this gem go like the mini golf course with the giant dinosaur rt 1 used to be so fun to drive down the plastic cows at hilltop at least they kept the cactus 🌵 but all they did was add more overpriced housing and corporate places you can go anywhere like more Chipotle and Starbucks route 1 used to be the capital of big restaurants in this entire area check out continental if you like old school places or tower of pizza there's a very few left and this is one of the best go well you can they have comedy shows on the weekends and a bar area with keno something for everyone
