Charming neighborhood cafe doling out traditional Thai cuisine in a bright, contemporary space.
Went in for lunch on a Saturday morning.
The service here was outstanding. We were able to discuss menu with staff and after making our order food came out in a timely manner.
The Thai basil I ordered was a bit too saucy for my liking that and the taste.we’re different from what I’m used to which is why I gave a 5. We also ordered a salad but they forgot it. Didn’t make a fuss because well we got full from the other items.
I would go back to try more menu items.
I had an amazing time at this restaurant! The Thai food (Shrimp Fresh Rolls and Brown Sugar Mango Fried Rice) was absolutely delicious – full of flavor and perfectly cooked. The service was quick and efficient, which was a bonus. The staff were incredibly kind and made the experience even better. I’ll definitely be coming back!
Not going back. I want to preface I've worked in the food industry for many years and don't review poorly lightly. We ordered takeout last week while we house sat. I ordered off of their website and noticed when my husband picked up the food I was charged additionally. Their website provided the lunch menu and charged lunch charges, which felt like false advertising for ordering on a friday night to charge additionally. We had ordered 2 curries which came without rice, and we have never been to a thai restaurant that made rice an additional charge. Then restaurant was kind enough to provide 'complementary rice' and offered to deliver it. We should have picked it up ourselves as it took 28 minutes for a delivery and our food was cold by then. The driver rang the ring door (we are house sitting so the owners out of town got a ring notification hours later) and we ended up going back to the restuarant to pick up additional rice after 30 minutes of waiting. Rice was found under the snow on the front step (front door never used) the next day. Food was okay, but we feel driving farther for better thai food is more worth it than going back.
Good food, but a bit expensive for the amount you get. I find the quality at Mapow or Thai Zap is much better for the price. The service is brutally slow. We got sat in the back of the restaurant, no one sitting around us and only two other tables occupied in the whole restaurant. It took our server 15 minutes to even come over to the table. By the time she made it over to us, we were ready to place our entire order.
I didn't want my meal to end it was so good. Had the Brown Sugar Mango Curry with chicken. It was spicy, sweet and so fresh tasting. If I were to have any complaint it would be the curry does not include any rice or noodle with it, but is a separate side order. This does not take away from the high quality and great taste of the meal I had. Would not hesitate to eat there again.
We tried this restaurant because I had a Nift gift card and was definitely not disappointed. Food was excellent tasting and staff were very friendly. I should have asked to have hotter water for my tea but it wasn't too bad at the temperature it was at when we got it. They also had someone playing piano after 6:00 pm so that was nice. I'd definitely recommend it if you like Thai food and a pleasant atmosphere. We got some pricey dishes but I think it was worth the cost.

The best Thai food I’ve had, and I say that as someone who’s tried many Thai restaurants throughout the country
Wonderful meal with a live guitarist playing

The food was very good. The service was deplorable. Not only were the drinks and food delivered so late ,the waitress didn't appear to even try to correct it.
N ever had a bad meal. Love the 3 taste salmon.
Outstanding!!! Went for dinner on election night for a peaceful, nourishing, relaxing, reliable, delicious meal. Got everything that we went for! We both loved our entrees and the speciality cocktails are fabulous! My first Mai Tai made with mezcal. Highly recommended!!

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in Massachusetts. Consistently well prepared food, sensational taste, quality vegetables and ingredients. Service is very good, and it's a quiet restaurant, great for conversation.
Delicious, variety of incredibly fresh vegetables in each dish!
Very reasonably priced. Very nice atmosphere. Very attentive service!
Outstanding experience!
Nice place, but I ordered my food mild in spice. It came very hot and spicy. I sent it back and quickly got it returned and I could tell the cook just rinsed it off, put it on a smaller plate with no sauce and sent it back. There was no sauce now for me to mix in the rice. When I tried to explain this to the waitress she couldn't understand what I was saying. I ate some of it ( still spicy) and left disappointed. Will not be returning to this restaurant.
Live music, quaint atmosphere, delicious food.
Worst drinks. Worst service. Worst service recovery. I’m not a difficult customer , they had no bartender. Inexperienced server was too stressed to care.
One of the best thai restaurants w have been to with the vegetarian options.
Poor quality food. Overly expensive. Unkind management. Fun atmosphere, near the waterfront, but will not return.
Nice place but the pad tai wasn't good. They allow dogs outside but there was broken glass on the ground at our table. The service was not around much, and also did not offer water for the dogs
Food was mediocre, bland, missed the flavors of ginger, Thai spices. I was so disappointed as I always loved their food many years ago.
It was supposed to be a night of good food and good company. I had no choice since I believe it is the only Thai restaurant in the area with delivery. I gave it a try for the first time. I placed my order, making sure to specify that I was vegan and that I wanted no fish sauce in my food.
But when my order arrived, I quickly realized that things were not going to go as planned. The fresh rolls, one of the items I was looking forward to was missing . They have made a mistake and made fried rolls. Every item I tasted was made with fish sauce despite my request. And to make matters worse, the soup I had ordered was a small size than I had expected a large size because that's what I ordered.
I tried to keep my cool in front of my guests, but I was pretty upset. Still, I decided to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt and called to let them know about the mix-up with the rolls. They were apologetic and offered me a credit, which I accepted.
But when I called again the next day to address the issue with the fish sauce, I was met with resistance. The first thing she says to me 'why are you calling the next day "? I mean what kind of question is that!?? Well the answer is I didn't want to make my guests uncomfortable by arguing back and forth with you, I was already embarrassed. The hostess, Katie, refused to help me and wouldn't even pass my number along to the manager/owner, Caroline Jolliffe. When I followed up with an email, I never received a response.
It was a disappointing experience, to say the least. I hate leaving bad reviews for local businesses, but the lack of customer service left me with no choice. It's safe to say that I won't be ordering from that restaurant again.
PS: AND I STILL HAVEN'T HEARD FROM THE OWNER YET. EXPECTED!
Tried their shrimp shumai, curry puffs and green curry. Can't go wrong with those but to their credit they nailed it. Would definitely go again.
Great atmosphere, delicious food and drinks.
5 stars. From the hostess seating us to the extremely pleasant water
girl to our fabulous and knowledgeable waiter it was top notch. We had a brown suger Colada which was awesome and had a nice kick. Then came the food- spectacular! Hot,fresh large portions and incredibly tasty. Sunday nights they also have a wonderful jazz pianist. Coming back next month!
WOW 😳
Really good!
Very tasty authentic Thai cuisine. Better to point out what you want rather than ordering in Thai unless you know for sure.
Ate here twice while in Newburyport, I was not disappointed. Friendly staff, live music, and vegan options are among the many reasons I will not hesitate to dine here again!
One of our favorite Thai restaurants (before/after a walk on the beach, of course). Easy menu for a vegan, vegetarian, and/or GF.
Good drunken noodles and pad Thai. More Thai dishes than the Poynt. Although the drunken noodles were salty even for me
Went in for lunch on a Saturday morning.
The service here was outstanding. We were able to discuss menu with staff and after making our order food came out in a timely manner.

Cute Thai restaurant with a beautiful view of the ocean *^*
Brown Sugar By The Sea is a standout Thai restaurant. The food is fresh and made to order. The staff are friendly, helpful, and very attentive. And the setting near the water in a coastal town is perfect. Thai food is my favorite type of food, and BSBTS is easily the best offering North of Boston. I live 40 min away and make the drive over at least once a month for takeout or occasionally dining in, purely because of how great the food is. Fresh vegetables, delicious sauces and spices, and authentic recipes served with a smile. Literally you can't beat it anywhere in a 20 mile radius. I've eaten at literally every Thai restaurant in the region, and this is the one. It's worth the drive, even if it's not close.
Food very excellent service very friendly highly recommended crab recoon the best food vary delicious 😋
Always a pleasure to eat here. Excellent Thai dishes. Lunch menu available.
Great Thai ice tea, too
I'm not sure what happened. Out of the 4 things we ordered one was not good (the chicken in the tiny rolls were dry) and the other three selections were bland. The drunken noodle was basically noodles with oil. Very little vegetables were in it and it was bland. The place looks amazing and is calm and inviting. The views of the water are nice and the people are friendly. I would just stick with drinks.
I didn't want my meal to end it was so good. Had the Brown Sugar Mango Curry with chicken. It was spicy, sweet and so fresh tasting. If I were to have any complaint it would be the curry does not include any rice or noodle with it, but is a separate side order. We dine here frequently on Friday nights because we enjoy the music, the food, the atmosphere, the location, and great parking, This Friday we had a fairly early (6:30pm) reservation for a party of five, three who were visiting for the first time from CA. Several members of our party ordered dishes with shrimp and were told they were out, that it often sells out quickly and that regular patrons know to call ahead to reserve dishes that have it. We found this extremely odd. Is this a marketing strategy? Here’s a long time popular and established restaurant near the waterfront in a seaport town known for its seafood unable to order enough of a popular ingredient in its cuisine to serve their customers who arrived fairly early on a summer Friday night? I can certainly understand that things run out, however being told this isn’t unusual and that customers “in the know” get preferential treatment was a real turn off, and makes us reluctant to recommend this place to our out of town guests.
Our family tried Brown Sugar by the Sea for the first time Memorial Day Weekend for takeout. We were delighted by the quality and taste of the food. We had the Drunken Noodles and Pad Thai. We also got an appetizer of the Chicken Fresh Rolls and those were delicious as well. I would go back again just got an order of those. We will definitely visit again.
We had the appetizer platter and it was very average. They don’t allow any substitutions which was disappointing. The pad Thai was very soupy, which made it unappealing and a bit too saucy.
I love coming here, especially on my birthday! The atmosphere is really nice, people are great and the food quality and taste is consistent. I like the live music, too. I do wish you would stop charging extra for rice!!
This place is soooo cute and soooo amazing. The service is incredible & the food is amazing :-)
The reviews I have seen indicate Brown Sugar is one of the better restaurants in Newburyport. I looked at the nasty (and unnecessary) review by Gina S. and feel this forum is not the place for such malicious remarks. It appears to be a personal vendetta rather than a review of the restaurant. I have known Jayne both professionally and personally for many years. She "plays by the rules", is pleasant, professional, honest and direct which, I suspect, may be qualities some people cannot appreciate as they don't ascribe to the same work ethic.
I just read Gina Spaulding’s review and find her statement quite odd…sounds like she or perhaps a friend may have a personal grudge. We’ve been customers for years and years and have never witnessed anything but pleasant and professional behavior from said bartender…she’s definitely an asset to brown sugar. Perhaps Gina should dine elsewhere in a “safer” environment if she feels uncomfortable.
This restaurant is lovely inside. The food is fantastic and the staff is incredibly friendly. Great location with plenty of parking. I highly recommend Brown Sugar.
The food was great, but you guys have a disgusting bartender (I believe her name is Jane) on your hands. I was eating my food and overheard jane speaking to the hostess with a bit of a rude tone. I didn’t think much of it until I overheard her say something totally out of line. So beyond inappropriate and plain nasty. Jane seems to be in her late 60s and the poor hostess was 18 at the oldest. I’m appalled. I wish I said something but I was honestly at a loss for words. It’s very concerning that a woman who behaves like that towards young girls is allowed on the establishment let alone serving food. I expect something to be done about this because I highly doubt this is the first time that woman has treated coworkers in this way, and she’s creating an unsafe environment for teens.
I ordered the Khao Soi soup to go last night and it could have possibly been the best soup I have ever had. Flavorful and piping hot even when it arrived at my house!
This place is an absolute gem! The food service and ambiance is as good as it gets. The food is fresh, clean and delicious. The drinks are expertly crafted and the servers (Moi and Bank) are simply the most pleasant and attentive servers I have ever encountered. I moved to Newburyport one year ago and despite having many excellent restaurants this is truly the best in my opinion. I eat there now several times per month.
WONDERFUL PLACE TO EAT. NICE ATMOSPHERE! GREAT DINING!
Delicious Thai food! A little on the spicey side, but we enjoy spicey. Comfy, relaxed atmosphere.
Crab Rangoon app possibly the best I’ve ever had. Kao Soi was delicious but I prefer more traditional prep with chicken leg.
The best Thai I've had since I moved out of Boston. Hands down. Arguably 5he best thai I've ever had. Highly recommend this place!! Oh, and the trader vic mai tai is the best mai tai I've ever had.....and that's saying something:)
Really disappointed, ordered multiple curries and they didn’t include rice. Drove far and spent a lot of money and for them to not include rice really ruined the meal.
We go here often. Not consistently excellent food but often enough that we keep coming back. Give it a try!
Hands down, Brown Sugar by the Sea has the BEST pad Thai I’ve ever tried! Absolutely perfect. The host was a bit off-putting though; When we walked in she barely said hi then just stared at us instead of asking how she could help or how many people. Made us feel awkward right off the bat, but luckily the rest of the staff were extremely attentive and helpful!
The food was delicious and the patio outside was really nice!
Some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had. The appetizer platter, country style pad thai and beef pad si yew were all phenomenal. Highly recommend!
Weak presentation; too sweet snd too much sauce. Did not digest well.
We so enjoyed our dinner there Friday night, we returned for dinner Sunday evening. Friendly, welcoming, helpful staff served us with a sense of care and joy. We tried the curries seafood and duck, green curry. All tasty and well prepared, veggies al dente and delicious. Had Pad Thai Sunday and it was richer with a greater complexity of flavor than any previous Pad Thai I have enjoyed. We'll go back again when we visit Newburyport.
Great Thai food. The scallion pancakes and basil fried rice are both excellent. They deliver locally, too, but note that the estimates on their website tend to be way off (often much faster).
Good food and good service.
We were not overwhelmed with our recent visit. Crispy duck was overdone, dry & chewy, fried rice was wet & soupy, almost a gumbo texture. We have eaten here many times and most always been satisfied. This Saturday was not their best effort for food quality or drink mixers, service was very good & appreciated.
Had a delicious plate of pad Thai and some crab Rangoons. Amazing service and food!!!!!
Best Thai food around
Great service.
This place is amazing! Came here with my parents and all of our meals were amazing. Such good stir fries with super fresh vegetables! Amazing choices for vegan/vegetarian dishes as well as meat dishes. Great atmosphere inside and there was a guy playing soft guitar that really added to the ambiance.
Love this place so much! Would give it 10 stars if I could!
The Tom Ka was great but that is about the only good thing I can say about our dinner which was a special date night with the fiancée. She was underwhelmed by her mango curry shrimp. I had the country style pad tai which was supposed to be spicy. There was nothing spicy about it. Instead it was the sweetest pad Tai I have ever had. Will not rush back
Wonderful Thai food and live music.
Cool location, good food
I ordered delivery tonight (two hours in advance) and paid $50 dollars with a tip and delivery fee for one meal. I work nights at the local hospital and hadn’t eaten all day, starving and tired and really looking forward to my food. I live a 4 minute drive away. I never received my delivery at all, yet the money was taken out of my account. They didn’t try to contact me at all, and when I called I received no answer. Beyond disappointed in the service. Do not recommend delivery.
My boys and I enjoyed the food, love music and great ambiance. Must go if visiting Newburyport.
Sweet staff, very clean, excellent Thai food!!
Good appetizers , horrible main dishes
The Thai basil Contained absolutely ZERO Thai basil
Nice atmosphere ok apps. Bad main dishes
Quality of beef in my main dish was terrible
Short on help but very courteous
Yummy! We just had their Brown Sugar Mango Curry with Chicken. Delicious!
Super food, excellent people, beautiful owners, in body, mind, and spirit.
My favorite Thai restaurant in the area. I've been going for years and they never let me down. This is the first restaurant where I've dined on premises since the start of the pandemic. They did a nice job creating a pleasant outdoor patio and it's dog friendly. As always, the staff is exceptional warm and gracious. Their house mai tai is a treat.
Try the 3 taste salmon dinner entree
Excellent place! Great food, service, and atmosphere. Spicy and fresh! Large menu for a Thai place. Don’t forget to have a Thai Iced Tea!
Wonderful restaurant. The staff is friendly the restaurant is clean and the food is delicious. I love the vegan & vegetarian options. The vegetable stir fry is my favorite . Always fresh and cooked perfectly.
Delicious massaman curry.
Great atmosphere, plenty of food options.
Excellent, friendly service, lots of well prepared and presented vegan options, comfortable dining room and easy parking behind.
Great food and folks!
Great Thai food in the middle of all Newburyport has to offer.
Great customers services
Delicious!! We ordered 4 different meals and the 5 of us shared them all. Good stuff and enough for leftovers.
Ordered spicy pad thai, large portion but too salty. Lots of vegetarian options.
Just what the doctor ordered! Delicious.
Good Thai food. During the pandemic this has been our default "go to" take out place. Watch out - the hot dishes can be really HOT!
It has been years since our first time at brown sugar by the sea. The service has always been excellent and the atmosphere great.
Good food, good prices, honestly is the best Thai (specifically curry) around.
Deliciousness. Had the curry, so good!!
Can’t say enough good things. Preordered take out delivery earlier in the day for 7pm on a Friday night and they were here right on time. Food was steaming hot. Never a bad experience!!!
Food good, service lousy.
Not sure what was going on, but we were outside, not crowded for a Saturday night, and there were 4 of us. 2 or us got our food, the other 2 didn't. No apologies on the part of the server. Didn't see her much during the course of our dinner, never came back to see if we needed anything. Pitch dark outside, no lighting except for a small candle, which went out after a short time. The music outside was good.
Good food and great service
Our favorite restaurant in the area. I moved here last year and tried about 20 places and Brown Sugar is by far the best quality and consistently good every time. Also good for me because they have many products without dairy.
Great place, great noodles, I've come here for years and it's always great
Best Thai food around!
This is one of our favorite restaurants ever and it's always fantastic. It was our last restaurant we went to before lock down and first one back. We had the Brown Sugar Mango Curry and the Garlic stir fry last night and they were great dishes. Service was friendly and timely. The outside dining option is really pleasant and nice what they've done.
Phenomenal Thai food with warm, inviting staff. Mango Thai Curry is the best!
Decent food but delivery is SLOOOOOOOW. Plan on waiting at least two hours for delivery. I called for an update and went straight to voicemail. Lots of local retaurants like (Pomadoris) have delivery service in 30 minutes of less. Also, delivery charge is approx $10.00.
Excellent food and great service!
The food test very delicious always good for families.👍🤗
Casual elegance. Great service and food. Reasonably priced for the area and ambience.Convenient location and parking.
Always amazing
We usually stop by this restaurant when we head back home from Plum Island. The flavors are strong and flavorful. The curries, fried rice, and pad thai are very good in my experience.
Amazing yummy food. Great customer service and tasteful decor.
Was looking for some Asian food in the area today, too bad Szechuan Taste was permanently closed, we found this place open, staff was very nice and the food was very good. We enjoyed it. Will definitely come back in the future. Thanks Brown Sugar by the sea!
This place is great. It's an intimate thai restaraunt with music on certain nights, great food, and a good atmosphere. The waitstaff is excellent and the drinks are awesome as well. We frequent this restaurant when we want a nice night out for dinner.
Good food and better waiters, my problem is it was a little hard to find. But good place all around.
Excellent food, took my food allergy very seriously, the hostess could tell me what i could and couldnt have before we even got seated. Very professional.
Very good food and drinks. Casual, fun atmosphere, with live music on some days. Can get busy, but that’s a good sign. :)
I have been coming to Brown Sugar by the Sea for years now, and always my go-to when I need good service and excellent food. My personal favorite is the tofu pad see ew and the chicken spring rolls as an appetizer. Their service has always been excellent and never had a complaint!
Sometimes this place serves up something really great and other times it's just okay. Quite expensive too. I usually travel up to Salisbury and go to Mali Thai Zap on 110 or Thai House in Hampton as they are more consistent and much more reasonably priced. Brown Sugar is pretty good though, located in a very nice part of Newburyport and they have nice, quiet live music with just piano or sometimes guitar.
Great
The bomb!
Romantic, quiet place to have dinner
Be delighted by quality Thai food in Newburyport! Great lunch specials, fantastic dinner menu with entertainment including live music!
Super delicious!!! Portions served are perfect.
I like this place but I wish they took celiac disease more seriously. For the second time I ordered a gluten free meal requesting soft tofu and after waiting an hour the tofu was fried and they don’t have a separate frier so clearly it was a gluten-filled dish for over $15. Be careful if you have a food allergy and the restaurant is busy. Also any item fried on the “gluten free menu” is not gluten free.
My family's regular go-to Thai takeout. I recommend the Pad See Ew and the Tom Kha. The shrimp fresh rolls are also tasty and everyone likes the crab rangoon. They have live jazz most nights and a nice fish tank, as well as a view of the harbor. Not the most authentic Thai restaurant in the world but this is in Newburyport, so the options being what they are, this place fits the bill.
Great food and service
Best Thai food north of Boston!
Foods good but expensive, and choices are minimal but my main question is why is it called Brown Sugar when there's no brown sugar on the menu? It's Thai food, so what the goat is up with that?
Good atmosphere decent food
Delicious, and good Mai Thais
