Intricate sushi rolls & inventive Thai cuisine offered in a fashionable backdrop with a modern vibe.
A small beautiful place! But the food is incredible. There are a lot of options to customise your food and very accommodating for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. If you are around Huntington Ave this is a must visit! Amazing food! Sure you will love it
The vibe is calm and cozy with perfect dim lighting. Setting the tone for a perfect dinner date!
I have marked this place for years as “want-to-go” as I like their newer branch in Allston. I’m glad that I finally checked it off my bucket list, but I’m not sure about coming here again.
To put it nicely, this is a good place for rich and casual student couples to share some small bites, snap some food pørn for Instagram, get tipsy together, and still have a flat stomach afterwards for aerobic “businesses.”
For working adults funding their life with paychecks and conscious of their spending during rampant inflation, this place’s value doesn’t offer an attractive ROI (return on investment) for either practical or vanity reasons.

Everything scores fair, and I enclosed more detailed reviews for each aspect below. My key complaint is their price.
The bill for a heterosexual couple without drinks came up just under $100 before tips. We ordered three entrees—two sushi rolls ($22+$25) and later added a $20 pad see ewe (stirred fried wide noodles) because the rolls still left us hungry. We each had a $9 watery soup that tastes like diluted paste, and I had a $6 garden salad that fits in a bowl. With tax, these add up to about $98.
If the serving size was bigger for the entrees, or the quality of the appetizers was better, I would have agreed with the prices, but sadly neither was the case.
This is not to say I don’t want to spend money dining out. In fact I probably frequent restaurants way too often than I should. If I were to set their price based on other restaurants that I like returning to in Boston, this owner should slash 15% off the current price to remain attractive in the market, if everything else stays the same.

The food is decent. The Japanese dishes are the best a non-Japanese can do, but their stirred fried Thai dish is truly the specialty. Not sure about the Tom Yum soup though, which tastes like paste stirred with hot water and then added in some sliced mushrooms and cooked meat.
The service is fair, not the most attentive initially, but after you started asking for napkin, water refills, and so forth, the service improved. Regardless, the attitude is always good and smiley.
As for the atmosphere, they are going for a romantic tavern vibe good for dating, but things turned out to be more like a dim semi-casual restaurant. There are some nice dishwares but inconsistent.
I had heard great things about Laughing monk cafe, but was somewhat disappointed by the quality of the food and the staff. Service was quick (food was served within 10 minutes), but the drunken noodles lacked the vibrant and fresh typical taste, and the nigiri and Philly salmon uramaki left something to be desired in terms of freshness of the fish.
We tried all of the tasting menus. Firstly, I appreciated the creativity and fanciness of the dishes. However, while the taste was good, it didn't wow me. None of them stood out as my favorite, but it was fun to try them all. Surprisingly, what I loved the most was their homemade dipping soy sauce, which enhanced all the sushi bites and made my day. 🥢🍣
Plus, the cocktails are a must. There are many creative Thai-inspired cocktails that you have to try.🍹
Great experience at Laughing Monk. Went for the Omakase, which was 14 courses for $175. While nontraditional each dish course was high quality, with large cuts of fish, and good flavor. There were sauces on everything, but they complimented the fish and, for the most part, never drowned the taste out. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this.
The staff is also super friendly and attentive.
For ambiance, the restaurant is on the casual side, and not very intimate, so it really doesn't fit the vibe of typical Omakase. As long as you go in knowing that you will have a great time. If you are just getting regular sushi the ambiance is pretty typical.
Overall, I highly recommend giving Laughing Monk a shot, especially the Omakase! Worth the money
After going to the hospital, weary and begging for a meal to satiate my blood loss, I came upon Laughing Monk Cafe and it was my salvation!
The service was absolutely splendid— the busser and server were very kind, keeping tabs on me and asking how everything was going though out my time there, and I felt so happy that I chose to go there!
I ordered the Drunken Noodles and it started fighting back— both in flavor and spice! If you are weak to heat, go mild! I beg of thee! But even despite all the pain I went through, I couldn’t help but take it home to savor it for longer! The thai iced tea was absolutely splendid (no milk included— which I was so grateful for) and the experience was simply fantastic.
I can’t wait to return to Laughing Monk in the future— with others absolutely!
The Thai Basil Fried Rice was great. I had a minor allergic reaction afterwards but nonetheless the food was great.
However the Roti is lacking was not and what I was expecting. It was like a scallion pancake rather than the Indian style traditional roti. The curry dip was a bit sweet as well but it was okay.
Excellent and very fresh fish, superb chirashi and eel. Headed back asap.
Take out was packaged well and the food was excellent. Special order was executed well.

The food was great and it was a chill little place. 😎💯🔥

Some of the only good sushi in Boston — sorry I said it!
Moved to boston a couple months ago with my girlfriend and this has been our #1 spot ever since. Great service, tasty food, comforting atmosphere. Must try it out if you haven’t yet!

Great food!!
It's delicious, but The restaurant is a little expensive.
Had horrible service from a waitress who had a horrible attitude.
That was our first time being there.
The food was good.
Food is absolutely delicious. Service is quick and kind. Try the green curry!

The dishes with wide noodles are so good, they get the lightly smoky flavor just right! Also love the panang curry and salmon avocado roll! Everything I have had here has been excellent!
Wonderful experience! Highly reccommended! Very sweet and pleasant service and the drunken noodle was sooooo good! A+

It's election of sushi as well as Thai food friendly fast
Authentisches thailändisches Essen, sehr gut. Angemessene Preise
Their pad see ew is so good!
Very good Asian fusion. We all ordered different entrees, and everyone was very happy.

Grandma spent almost $400.00,
For family birthday party, I asked The cost for crab Raccoon well turns out to be for four bite-size crab Ragan‘s almost $11, i’ve been asked a question for someone spending that kind of money for a place that doesn’t have that much business could they give an elderly person a free order or two for her poor party, The answer was absolutely not. Lesson learned . I will never go there I will never recommend anyone there nor shall I ever return.
Very poor service from the waitress in front, she is rude and makes you feel very uncomfortable/ unwelcome based on your ethnicity. For a public restaurant where you go to spend money and the foods isn’t given to you for free, she shouldn’t be the first person you encounter. It was a sad and terrible experience. If the meal is good you should enjoy the service as well. She was disgustingly rude!!!
A picture of the restaurant response. I’m not surprised lol!! Thanks for the hostility, It proves my point, so Sad!
If you know you wait Thai food because you’ve tried it and liked it come here. But if you don’t know don’t try it here, me and my wife did that and interacted with a manager who rudely told us he wouldn’t service us again if we came when I simply asked “could you comp my wife’s meal, it’s okay if you can’t we understand” after he told us “we are willing to comp both meals”
Don’t try thai here for the first time, do get Thai if you know you love it!
Also green curry was very sweet
Food is great, prices are fair, and the service fast and friendly. It's always busy but they generally have a table free. Great for vegetarians. Don't expect a long evening as it's fast paced.
Best Thai food in Boston hands down.
Awesome Chef and Nice presentation of food.
1. The food are not good especially curry.
2. I ordered food online and called right away to change my options, but the employee didn't update them.
She didn’t even check the food and spoke to me immediately, that it was already made. But It had only been 1 minute since I placed the order.
The person I spoke with, whether an employee or employer, was rude and lacked any sense of service.
Great food ruined by horrible staff service. The 2 ladies are so unbelievably rude and aggressive about the tip. Despite leaving a 15% tip, they passive aggressively asked why. Another time, I went with an Italian exchange trainee who paid but didnt tip (cultural norms are different there) they stopped him by the door and said that tipping is mandatory. Not to mention their weird rule that they only take 2 cards..
Food here is amazing but I honestly just cant stand interacting with them. Ill stick to takeouts only
The restaurant is too small. The price is way too high like Michelin restaurant. Service attitude is very bad. This is an very unwelcoming place. Like another one star review - Their service is disgustingly rude. Not a good restaurant to spend your money. Tons of choices nearby for higher quality authentic Thai food. Won’t come back any more. This is an very unwelcoming place.
I went the restaurant around 1:30, but still there was a waiting as they only utilized half part of the restaurant. The tables were so close to each other so you can barely walk between the tables.
I ordered drunk noodle and it was too oily and spicy. However, the service was fast and the portion was generous.
Would I recommend this place? Maybe yes for the menus beside of drunken noodles.
Wow. After a stressful morning it was so awesome to get a late lunch here. It was delicious, quick, and had great service .
Great food with a funky Mission Hill vibe. Best Tom Yum in town!
Amazing Thai food. It's a small place but the experience was amazing. The service and taste were both excellent. Highly recommend this place!
They have the best thai curry. Love this place
The food was good, but the service was horrible. The waitress was rude, and would not let me wait inside the restaurant for my friends. And was rushing us to leave.
Service was bad. Waitress was very rude.
I got the Tom Yum soup and Panang Beef Curry. Not the cheapest restaurant but the food was good. Definitely recommend the Tom Yum! What bothered me was the lady who served me. It seemed like she was super annoyed by the fact that I was eating by myself and needed a table. I felt super rushed to shove everything in my mouth. Sorry for eating alone.
I always try new places. I work nearby and tried by chance the laughing monk cafe. I have to say I loved it.
Best Thai food I had.
The taste, quality, presentation were superb. People are very courteous and respectful, not invasive or rushing you up.
We tried the Thai food and I want to try some sushi bar next time.
The atmosphere is cozy and the music very nice.
I recommend.
Loved this small, peaceful Thai cafe. Food was delicious, and tons of vegetarian options. We had the Drunken noodles and chili Thai basil with jasmine tea. The tea was steamy hot and felt good on a cold evening. The food was fresh, tasty with loads of tofu and veggies. Will definitely recommend this place at any time of day!
If you have heard good things about “laughing monk” from your friends, they prob meant the one in Allston, not this one. We made the mistake of going to this one, thinking they are the same. Their Thai dishes and sushi are just Okish, nothing impressed me (again, apparently all the great dishes I heard come from the Allston one). The waitress was rude and the service was terrible. She started to wipe the table even before we left or even had the chance to take our belongings off the table, so we had food crumbs all over the place.
Food of excellent quality and taste. We ordered tuna roll sushi, fried wings as an appetizer, Tom yum soup, and red curry with beef. Without exceptions all dishes were excellent! Perhaps one small thing to improve is for the server to ask about the order and timing of dishes.
Our appetizers were excellent and came very fast, the homemade shumai was to die for. Our entrees also came very quickly and were delicious. The service was great as well. Very affordable, and has a small, cafe like atmosphere. Would enthusiastically recommend!
The pad thai had a surprising amount of sweetness to it, which I really enjoyed. The staff were very attentive.
It's one of the best restaurants I've been to. Everything about it was top-notch!
Jan 2024:
Party of 10
Sushi rolls were surprisingly delicious and fresh and presentation was nice! I enjoyed the crab ragoons they were. Perfectly crispy and warm. Had the pad thai with tofu it was delicious although the tofu was a bit much and I prefer it fully grilled and not mushy.
Well the food in this place is really good and wouldn’t disappoint you however didn’t quite like the experience when the staff took our plates when we were still eating food. It wasn’t quite appreciated. I understand they had quite a long line of customers waiting for their turn but it was quite a rude experience on my end.
solid local thai spot, fine to eat in or out. I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty the sushi was.
I've never given any review anywhere and this is my first time for giving a bad review here. I got 3 orders of Moo Ping (grilled pork) that costs me about 50$ for delivery order. I'm so upset cuz it's too much fat (about 80%). I have ordered Moo Ping from other restaurants many times and I've never seen so much fat like this. I can't believe that a famous restaurant would make such poor quality food. This will be my first and last time ordering food from here.
Tried their Omakase, over all good experience. Nice food, good service, the only thing not match the price is the environment. But over all good.
Good place with nice atmosphere
Laughing Monk is pretty spacious, so it is good for a group meal. I've been here twice and have never had issues with the service.
Food:
- Thai Iced Tea: A classic drink at any Thai place. It was very creamy and did not taste powdery. I would get this again.
- Shrimp Thai Fried Rice: This dish was a bit oily, but the wok flavor is very nice. Lots of umami.
- Chicken Mango Curry: The chicken was pretty dry, but the curry was well balanced. However, it is not the best mango curry that I've had.
- Beef Pad See Ew: This dish was very salty. I am not sure if it was an off day or if it is usually this salty.
- Flan and Sticky Rice: This dessert felt like a scam to be honest. You are pretty much paying for the presentation because the flan and sticky rice were each about the size of a quarter. This was recommended by our server, but we were very disappointed because we could not taste anything given the size.
This was my second time here. I enjoyed my first time more, especially since prices have increased quite a bit without the same increase in quality or variety, but I would come a third time for the omakase, as that seems to be a good experience based on reviews.
The food is very good, a little more for value for money however the place is very tight, we can hear the conversation of the next person next to you so if you are looking for a quiet place or privacy it’s not, the tables are very close to each other. However if with friends to have a good drink it’s for you.The reservation option online is not great as they charge a $1 to do your reservations
Very cute Thai eatery.
They were playing Christmas music when we walked in and had a whole projector installation for the holiday season.
We ordered the yuzu lager beer they had and it was freaking AMAZING. Such a good beer, albeit an expensive beer ($12)
The food itself was also well done. The red curry was spicy and well made. The gyoza was delicious. The sushi tasted fresh and had a lot of nice flavors and finally the tom yum soup was yummy.
Honestly loved everything about this place, no complaints at all!
Some of the best Thai food in the city, just a bucketful of great options here. I am partial to the basil fried rice, but their pad Thai is apparently very good as well. In addition, the sushi is quite nice.
An amazing Thai restaurant with plenty of Asian food options to choose from. The only negative about this place is the hard to find parking spot.
We ordered the scallion pancakes, no meat tofu sushi rolls and Thai basil fried rice. 🍚 🍣🍱
Scallion pancakes were not too oily, crisp and to our liking. The no meat sushi rolls were flavorful ( it had cucumber, avocado, and fried tofu) loved the flavors. Thai basil fried rice never disappoints. We requested them to make it “Thai spicy” and they obliged.
The ambience, service and music was very
inviting. We will definitely go again.
Nice lunch choices
Great atmosphere, delicious food, my girlfriend and I’s favorite place for takeout !
The appetizers were expensive but the food was really good. Best crab rangoon I’ve ever had!
We love this place!! I try to come here every time we come to Boston because the food is so delicious and the service is quick and everyone is so friendly! They have sushi and thai food, and everything is soo delicious
I find it weird that for a place known for sushi they serve imitation crab in their sushi platter as a nigiri.... It's like saying if you're not paying a ton of money from our exclusive menu we're just gonna give you some second tier food 🤷🏻♀️
Some of the best thai food in Boston!
excellent customer service and the food tastes great! would definitely come again. the ambiance is also relaxing
Excellent service and food is great, would definitely recommend to others
Great experience with great food, will be visiting again. Some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had!!
Great thai food!
Thai Milk tee 😍
Love it!! Friendly staff.
great food!!!
Their food is SO GOOD. Different from other Thai places.
All their packaging is so cute and also 100% eco friendly!
Great Thai milk tea!
Great Service and Good Food. Definitely coming back again. If you are around the area, you must stop by
It was very tasty and pleasant, I would recommend!
The food is delicious and the service is good. Would recommend!
Dining at here,I savored an exceptional Pad Thai, the iconic Thai dish, mastered here. The noodles were perfectly tender yet chewy, harmoniously entangled with succulent shrimp and immersed in an exquisite tamarind sauce. Each bite revealed layers of flavor, a tantalizing dance of sweet, sour, and savory, topped with crunchy peanuts and fresh bean sprouts. The generous portion satisfied completely, mirroring the attentive and warm service received.
Great place, second time here.
Appreciate price.
Always delicious! 5 stars.
Got the tofu pad Thai and it was super good! I come here relatively often as a student at HMS, and they've yet to disappoint!
Amazing good, but make sure you double check with the waiters if you can't handle your spice.
Delicious food and good service! Vibrant atmosphere with aquatic views
Fried rice smells great
Very aquatic background image
Overpriced, service is so so, atmosphere is zero, there is none.
great Thai food!
Ordered veg tempura sushi roll and a crispy chicken pineapple fried rice. Both were absolutely amazing and the service was great too! We got the order in less than 10 min and I can’t ask for much!
Super cute little place! Great athmosphere, service, and food!
Used to be good but no linger. Ordinary food,
Great place for a quick lunch 😋
This restaurant has great customer service and even better food, I would 100% recommend coming here to anyone who hasn’t tried it, if you’re looking for authentic Thai cuisine then this is the place for you!
Great place. Great vibes. All around great
Really good food and very reasonable. Whole family loved it which is unusual
It was so nice, we arrived at the end of their shift but they still had great service :))
Omakase is great
They gave us a table when there wasn’t anything available. The food and service was excellent
The food and atmosphere is amazing here! The pad thai is delicious!
Best place to go around Longwood medics area! Also great to order delivery service!
Best cafe for HSPH students!!!
Wonderful experience dining at The Laughing Monk Cafe! We had a cozy table inside with a lovely jazz music video playing behind us on the wall behind the Sushi chef and the service and staff were exceptional. And the food was absolutely delicious!! 10 out of 10 for presentation! We will definitely be back!❤️❤️
My favorite Thai place in the Boston area! Everything dish I had was delicious. Their pad thai, drunken noodles, pineapple fries rice are amazing.
Great atmosphere with the giant screen with the fish
Amazing noodles and gyoza. I love the relaxing atmosphere. This place was one of my first introductions to Boston ever since then the food has gone downhill.
Love this place, good food and the staff is so nice to me.
It was my first time ordering from there. The food was really good! I ordered the pad Thai shrimp and Thai iced tea. The service of the waitstaff seemed pleasant. Looking forward to trying something else from them.
The pad Thai was too mushy. Otherwise the curry was great !
Great cozy place with really good Thai food and cocktails with special effects.
Asians don't go to this restaurant, there is a Thai waitress here who is tall and racist, she makes me and my friends wait seven or eight minutes for her to take our order, and no matter when she always serves everyone in the restaurant before she serves us. She never smiles at us but smiles at people of other races. She ended up asking each of us to tip her $6, I gave her $3, and then she turned around and yelled at me in Thai to the others. It was pure racism!
Food was amazing and delivered in great packaging that kept everything fresh. Would highly recommend.
Nice
Amazing
Visited 'The Laughing Monk' in Boston and was absolutely delighted by the experience. The Thai dishes are authentic, bursting with flavors that transport you straight to the streets of Bangkok. Coupled with the warm ambiance and attentive staff, this spot is a gem in Boston's dining scene. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a memorable Thai meal.
The food is great! One of my favorite Thai spots in Boston. 100% recommend.
amazing ambiance and great food
