Sharp eatery offering familiar Thai fare such as curry & noodle dishes for lunch & dinner.
First time trying Thai food and stopped here with a friend for late lunch. It was not crowded until we were leaving. The service was quick. Lots of delicious sounding things on the menu. Opted to try a noodle soup which was sooo good. I love cabbage and this soup was perfect for me. The portions were huge and could make several meals! I enjoyed the atmosphere and liked the food! I also tried pad Thai and friend rice. Looking forward to trying more Thai food and coming back here when I’m in town!
The food here is very delicious. There is plenty to choose from for every taste and craving. The chicken curry puffs were flavorful and fresh. The crispy basil chicken is great if you like spicy and flavorful dishes. The volcano shrimp is nice, it has a sweet and spicy kick to it. Very crispy and fresh.
I loved the service, the servers were very kind and helpful in describing every dish since it was my first time here. The food is hot and comforting, you will want to order one of everything! I’ll definitely be back!
If you want fresh vibrant food this is the food for you. Cooked with love and the flavor is so perfect no sauce on the table. Great level of heat. Hits all the levels of crunchy bright spicy savory . Absolutely delicious and authentic . Larb chicken , satay chicken, green shrimp curry and basil Thai shrimp duo special. Drinks and service amazing. Do your self a favor and take some friends and share!!!
Went to this restaurant for lunch. It’s in downtown Fredrick. Had a 40 min wait during the weekend. It’s a small cozy space. We tried their drinks and Macha bubble tea. They were all good. We ordered Thai basil fried rice, yellow curry base soup and stir fried veggies, stir fried eggplant with noodles. They were all very flavorful and delicious. The flavors were bursting and strong. I think best Thai food I have eaten in the US. Highly recommend! Service was good too.
Wow. This place is perfect. The atmosphere made me feel like I was really on vacation. Loved their playlist of jazzy rendition of well known songs. The waitress and waiters were lovely and warm. The Tom Kha soup was superb. The drizzle of coconut cream really adds contrast of creaminess and tartness of the soup. There was so much personality in the soup with the different flavors of the vegetables. The mango curry was amazing. The flavor, the freshness, it was the best mango curry I've had. The Phuket Paradise was also just amazing. The sticky rice with mango was so good. Mango was at its perfect ripeness for that sweet flavor and soft yet firm texture. Mix that with the sticky rice and coconut sauce was pure joy. I wish I could come back here more often to try their other dishes. Highly recommend coming here.
One of the best Thai places in and around Frederick. We are fortunate to have so many good restaurants in the area. Not to be missed and we are regulars.
Yellow curry was thin and without much flavor. Warm sake and garden spring rolls were delicious
Best Thai food in Frederick. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options.

I will go back to this restaurant every time I visit Frederick. Great food - we went for a date and had the duck curry and the pad Thai. Both great!
Easy to find gluten free items.
Authentic Thai cuisine in the heart of historic Frederick. Cozy place. Great food.
Our fav dishes are the beef with drunken noodles, shrimp pad krapow, and chicken pad prik king.
Their fried tofu appetizer with sweet and sour sauce is delish.
Good sized portions- this place has the spices down pat.
Sometimes we just get. In the car on Sundays, drive 45 minutes to grab some great Thai.
We often meet our our Frederick- based friends here. Big bang for the buck. Flavor, flavor, flavor!
Great spot for Thai food in the city center. The Pad Kra Praow stood out with its fresh ingredients and perfectly balanced flavors. And their iced coffee was as authentic as it gets.
The atmosphere was comfortable, and the service was friendly and efficient. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Frederick in the future!
One of the best Thai places. Also great with a toddler
Food is really , especially noodles and black mushrooms are excellent!!!
Awesome experience every time I go. Food is excellent.
Always a hit for me! The host that attended to me was really pleasant and patient; but also everyone on the staff is attentive and hospitable.
Food is always delicious and fresh!
On my birthday, a side shrimp crab rangoon was added to my order to celebrate with me 😘👌🏾 thank you!!
Noodle dishes are all incredible. Drunken noodles for instance. The juiciest tomatoes burst in your mouth when you bite down on them exploding with the culmination of all the flavors in the dish. Those fat noodles are cooked to perfection with sauce in-between the layers of noodles. If you live near by and you haven't tried it, do. And if you're visiting from out of town this is one of the best places our area has to offer. In door dinning has been down for a while. But the food travels well go have a picnic. Cheers.
Love everything about it.
Super duper yummy. Great service by Jang. Best drunken noodles and larb I have ever had. Highly recommend this place.
Love this place food is yummy and service is great
We come every time we visit Fredrick. This last time was even better than before. Our server was excellent, and the food was so flavorful and delicous!
Online prices are $10 less than the menu at the restaurant.
My Favorite Thai food. Delicious.
Amazing service and food. Overall favorite Thai place
Love this place!

We ordered takeout. The drunken noodles were delicious and the perfect amount of spiciness. Lots of good flavors. Better than the other Thai places in Frederick. We also got dumplings, pad Thai, and the brown sugar milk tea, which were very good. I was not expecting this, but they even threw us a free order of the crispy wontons appetizer! Would highly recommend.
This is the best Thai restaurant in Frederick. My sister-in-law is Thai, I grew up around their family, and I've been around...I know good Thai food. The beef drunken noodles are the best I've ever had. Try their version of a seaweed salad. I recommend any of their curries. If you are a simple eater, the pineapple fried rice is delicious. I've tried several other dishes there...everything is good. The staff is friendly and accommodating...they are really great people. You won't be disappointed.
One of the best service I have seen in restaurants!!! Very sweet and courteous people. Food was really good.. We got Drunken Noodles and Thai Basil Fried Rice.

This might be my favorite Thai place ever! Everything was so delicious, the service was lovely, and it had a very nice atmosphere. We tried a fried dumpling, a special that was a spring roll with shrimp and avocado with a strawberry sauce that was incredible, the red curry with tofu and the yellow curry with pork. I love yellow curry, and this was next level delicious. I can’t wait to return!
My new favorite restaurant, best meal I've had in a very long time. Every single bite was amazing, tried 3 things on the menu and will be going back to try everything else. Super fast service too
One of the best meal I ever had! The duck curry was sooo amazing, I recommend it and will go back to try more 😍
One of the best Thai restaurants in the DMV. Every time we go the service is amazing and the food is out of this world. Never disappoints. The Mango Sticky rice is top tier.
If you want fresh vibrant food this is the food for you. Cooked with love and the flavor is so perfect no sauce on the table. Great level of heat. Hits all the levels of crunchy bright spicy savory . Tasty and affordable spot!
I recently dined at Sumittra in Frederick and was left thoroughly disappointed by the experience. Upon ordering a salad, I was dismayed to find a hair in it. While they promptly offered to order a different dish, the lack of proper attention to detail was concerning.
What compounded the disappointment was the fact that despite the inconvenience and unappetizing discovery, the restaurant did not remove the dish from the bill. It seemed they were more concerned with maintaining their profits than ensuring customer satisfaction. Additionally, it was disheartening to learn that they did not offer a complimentary dish as it is not their policy.
It's a shame because we used to visit there every time we were in Frederick. The food is delicious yet overpriced, but the service is poor and doesn't match the standards.
Overall, my experience at Sumittra was marred by poor hygiene standards, a lack of accountability for their mistakes, and a disappointing customer service approach. I cannot in good conscience recommend this establishment to others.
Best bubble tea downtown!
I got yellow curry takeout recently and I have to say it is by far the best Thai food I've tried yet! So flavorful and rich, definitely a must if you need Thai food downtown!
Visited with out of town guests. They loved it!! Great food, prompt and friendly wait staff..
The food is great, staff are very friendly and welcoming. I love their fried rice with beef and Tom Yum soup is amazing. Sumittra is the best Thai restaurant in downtown Frederick.
Really excellent food and great service. Great menu selections of all types. Vegetarian friendly, too.
I've been to a lot of very good restaurants in the past, so my standards are pretty high. The food here is pretty expensive. However, it is decent enough. The flavors are there and the food is well cooked, however the cheif does not season as much so it comes out a little more bland then other places. All in all I would come back because it definitely scratches that thai itch and the food was good, but I don't think it's worth the price.
Live this place! Their spring rolls are some of the best! We also got the Drucken Noodle. Good spice level and a lot of shrimp! Good portion size and the food was hit and tasty!!
Excellent Thai food around DMV. A must try place. We have ordered food from here fairly regularly and I can definitely say it’s fresh, delicious and worth every penny. The food is so good that it motivates me to try different dishes every time I order, being a very particular and choosy eater this restaurant surprises me. Awesome job guys keep it up.
Amazing Thai cuisine! Nice atmosphere and service too!
Came here for a Christmas dinner with the family and they couldn’t stop raving about it. You know a place is excellent when there’s a line waiting for opening.
I’m always looking for plant based and they had a great eggplant dish. Will be going back for sure.
To be honest I don’t know how to start. I’m still processing the words that the “gentleman” told me as soon we enter. “Please if you are going to stay make sure that the baby don’t cry, there is more people coming”. Are you serous? That’s not how you treat customer, be more respectful and ever more intelligent if you want to keep customer coming in to your business and instead of saying that kind of comments take the time to welcome people and ask them how you can help to calm the little ones.
So please guys remove from your survey the Kid- friendliness topic because for sure some of your employees have zero idea about it or at least training them.
I had an extremely disappointing experience at Sumittra Thai Cuisine. The manager's rude response to a crying baby was completely uncalled for. Instead of showing understanding, they insisted the baby should be calm or we had to leave. We left before even placing an order. The lack of empathy and hospitality makes it clear that customer satisfaction is not a priority at Sumittra Thai Cuisine. I won't be returning and would advise others to think twice before choosing this restaurant.
I came with my family and the server told us pretty much to leave because my daughter (1 year) was crying. I couldn’t eat here and I’m glad I didn’t do it. The energy was not there, and maybe the food is coming on the same way that male server treated us. First time I’ve experienced such a BAD EXPERIENCE.
Loved this place. Pra Ram Tofu is one of my favorite things and they serve it in a beautiful mountain of tofu and broccoli. I'm not the sort to Instagram my food but I feel like I should when I eat here. It doesn't just look good out also tastes divine. The tofu is crispy and the broccoli is crisp. The servers are very friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself is beautiful, decorated with flowers and interesting art. I have returned to this spot over and over because it's now one of my favs!
Zero flavor. Very disappointing since we have been here before and had wonderful food.
the third-level spicy still tastes like no heat was added at all, but overall one of the top places to dine in DTF.
This was our first time. We ordered take-out. The Panang Curry with chicken had 1 slice of red pepper in the entire serving and the rest was a few soggy broccoli florets and dry chicken. The Drunken noodles was blah and also had dry chicken in it. This was also our last time.
Excellent food. Tasteful. Lovely waitress. Can’t wait to go back.
Visited here from out of town. Really great specials and noodles. Menu has something for everyone. Definitely would come back.
Delicious food and excellent service.
Delicious
It was great. They serve alcohol too.
Oh my god! 5 stars! Yum! Food was worth the bad atmosphere. It was very crowded and so noisy we couldn’t hear each other. But that Panang made me say PaDang! It was so good. They even added pineapples upon request. I suggest this. My very sexy bf got the chicken padthai which was also scrumptious.
Amazing tofu coconut soup!!!
Everything on the menu is delicious, and I am always having something different 😋
Best Thai food around. Food presentation and quality A+ good portion sizes, nice variety of spicy and non spicy dishes. Trust the spicy ratings on the menu. very friendly staff. Warm, inviting, and well decorated restaurant. Would make for an excellent date night or fun outing with friends.
The Thai Teatini is a must try if you are looking at the cocktail menu. It was so good.
Whenever I'm craving Thai food, I will think of this place. Check it out for yourself, you won't regret it.
My husband and I went here for dinner. The food was delicious - the Ginger Broccoli with Chicken was outstanding! The servers were very friendly and answered all our questions. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Delicious food, cozy atmosphere, and attentive servers. They recommended the eggplant madness dish and customized it to my likening, and it was possibly the best Thai food I have eaten. 10/10 and would definitely return, it was worth the price. Shrimp and crab rangoons, as well as the coconut pudding, were delicious.
Food is tasty. Excellent services and restaurant is clean
The best Thai Restaurant in Frederick ever!!!!!!
Very good service. My kids and I enjoyed our meal very much.
I have had dinner a few times here and the service has always been excellent every time. The restaurant is located in the heart of the downtown area which provids great scenery to your dinner as well.
Some of my favorite things to order are the drunken noodles and spicy ka praow fried rice. I also like to get bubble tea as well.
I was expecting more.
Good food.
Food is always delicious and staff are typically quick and efficient but also friendly. Service is average as far as time spent placing your order to when it ends up on the table. Atmosphere is very eclectic and colorful with a nice vibe. Music is usually something with a steady beat but not intrusive if you’re having a conversation or easily distracted.
I've been a regular at this Thai restaurant, often with family, and we've had bills over $$$$ each time. However, my recent visit with just my daughter and wife for a quick meal left me quite disappointed. Everything was fine until I requested some condiments. Unfortunately, that's when things took a turn for the worse.
The server brought an incredibly tiny container of chili flakes and a small saucer of what seemed like a knock-off Sriracha sauce. When I inquired about vinegar-dipped pepper, the server claimed they didn't have it and insisted they only had fish sauce chili. Instead of accommodating my request, she kept repeating herself, which was frustrating.
Finally, I asked a male server for assistance, and he brought over what I needed. While the food itself is good, the experience was marred by the stingy and unhelpful condiment service. The use of cheap plastic containers and the meager portion sizes for the price we paid was disappointing. I can't recommend this place to anyone, and I doubt I'll be returning.
I want to emphasize that this review is based solely on my personal experience, and my disappointment is primarily related to the service and value I received. Service is of utmost importance to me, especially since I've had great experiences in the past with this and similar businesses. While the food quality remains decent, it's the decline in service and the perceived lack of value for the price paid that led to this negative review.
It was pretty good we sat outside toward the evening of a hot day. Air can get kind of stagnant but we did also get a breeze here and there. Food was decent portion sizes and pretty good for the most part. I enjoyed the gyoza crispy wonton and drunken noodles. Bathroom was a bit of a walk and shared with the next door restaurant in a like closet/storeroom with no air conditioning.
Absolutely amazing service and all around authentic food taste. I went here with my friend who was born and raised in Thailand and they said it tasted just like home. Owner is very sweet as well being quick to accommodate anything needed.
Another very good meal at Sumittra, that's 2/2!!
Service is very good too, they pay attention!!
We just picked up our take-out came home and ate, and gosh its like the chefs simply forgot to add salt, spices and other ingredients to the dishes. Ordered the Chicken-Satay, Chicken-Tofu-Egg Fried Rice and a Basil Chicken Fried Rice and paid about 50 bucks and gosh felt I had to share by bad experience. We saw the overall 4.6 ratings and chose this restaurant, but our experience is just so drastic and wondering if we just got unlucky maybe!!!???
I was underwhelmed by this place the first time, small plates and high prices. Gave them a second chance and tried the eggplant entree which was very good and a bit more generous.
This is the best Thai restaurant we have been to so far. We go there quite often. They get to know us, cheefully welcome us every time, bring us our drinks even before we order them (which is so cool!), and they know what we like to eat. Importanly, the food always tastes great and fresh. Highly recommended!
Great Thai food after a long time
As usual the food was excellent. There are no complaints there, prices are a little more than I'd like but sometimes you get what you pay for.
I've heard rave reviews of thos place but it was underwhelming for me, the food was actually pretty bland especially for a a Thai place. The service was also overbearing. However, on the bright side, the Boise level was low enough to talk to the table and the place was clean and decorated well.
Not a fan
Just ordered Pad Thai Beef to go and it was soooo delicious! Hit the spot! Thanks!
Good but not the best
such great food!! i recommend the “crab star” & thai brown sugar milk tea for sure - even better than the food was the customer service, everyone was so nice!
This is my favorite restaurant. The staff is friendly and welcoming, the food is excellent, and the bubble tea is the best. The best Thai food in Frederick. I’ve never had a dish here that wasn’t superb.
Worst experience ever in a restaurant. Hostess is extremely rude. She refused to take my reservation saying they don't do reservations. When I said many tables are empty and more than the people on the waitlist the hostess said she had other reservations because those people called in advance. CONTRADICTING....
I finally placed an order for takeout while waiting for our table. When I went to pick and pay for my takeout the restaurant was empty and I asked if I can now dine in and enjoy my food instead of driving 30-40 min home and eating it cold. The hostess asked HOW many people are eating and when I said 1, she said I am not sure I will have to ask my manager. At this time there were more than four tables with customers busy eating.
After coming on yelp I realized that I am not the only one who had a bad customer experience.
WILL NEVER dine in again.
Food was too oily and average. I had ordered drunken noodle
Nice, relatively quiet little place. The service and food were absolutely fantastic. Our waiter was wonderful at describing differences in food and styles, along with being very patient and understanding. Once the food came, the portions and quality were awesome
Anytime we are in the area and hungry we go to this location of Sumittra. While there is one other location in Charles Town, I believe this one is much better all around. I had the drunken noodles, and they are the best I’ve ever had. They are a bit spicy, so take caution. The crispy Thai basil is another excellent option, and is a bit spicy as well. We have ordered their daily specials many times and they are also very good, as well as their appetizers. Overall, Sumittra is a fantastic choice if you are hungry in Frederick!
Always fantastic food and service. A must if you appreciate fresh, flavorful quisine.
The food is really good. I’ve eaten here more than 8 times.
I have tried pad Thai and rate it 8/10 for flavor/texture, and also 8/10 for portion and presentation.
The drunken noodles are one of my faves. It’s pretty consistent in flavor except for when I ordered an hour before close and at their last call to take din home to hubby. It tasted a bit rushed and unfortunately wasn’t flavorful. Flavor and texture on a normal day is 8.5/10 but once I add more spice it becomes a 9/10. Portion 7.5/10 (this is a pretty good portion usually but the last few times I ordered it the veggies has trumped the meat and noodles. I would prefer a more balance with less veggies and more meat and noodle so I’m not biting into large pieces of veggies with every bite. It’s called drunken noodle, not drunken veggies). Presentation 8/10 most days except it was a 6.5/10 when I didn’t have enough meat with noodles.
The same happened with the Spicy Thai Basil Rice another fave from there I ordered for my daughter - there was no flavor only spice. Normal days I’ll rate this 9/10 for flavor and texture. 10/10 for presentation. Presentation and portion 10/10.
Tom Yum soup is yummy! I’ve had it both with shrimp and meat. I prefer it with shrimp. Rating 10/10 all around except portion is 7/10. Would love more broth!
We really enjoy Frederick, so we stopped for some light eats on our way home from biking in the area. Found this little Thai place, and enjoyed what we ordered (chicken larb, green papaya salad, and edamame). Food was flavorful and well prepared. Service was fine, as well. We enjoyed their outdoor seating (very limited), and would highly recommend this place.
My fiancé and I just stumbled upon this restaurant since we had our German shepherd with us, and wanted to find a spot with outdoor seating. The whole staff was extremely accommodating, offering a water dish for our dog and making the experience truly personal by having a conversation with us (beyond just taking our order). The food were delicious - dumplings, spring rolls, drunken noodles, the trio noodles, and the taro bubble tea. Highly recommend this place!
absolutely sensational.
Amazing food. I’ve been a customer for years!
Amazing food and the staff was so nice! My mom and I randomly decided to eat here while exploring downtown Frederick and I am so happy we did. The food was so good that I forgot to take a picture. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Will be back for sure.
Our son chose here for his birthday dinner and it was our first time trying Thai food. We always stayed away from Thai because we thought all curry was the same. Nope! We were so wrong!
We started off with a warm sake that came piping hot in a porcelain carafe with enough in it for 3 small cups while my wife had a beer. Next, we shared a dumpling app. My wife wasn't too impressed but I enjoyed it. It reminded me of a stuffed cabbage with a teriyaki sauce. For the entrees, my wife wasn't very hungry and got the pork fried rice while our son suggested I get the duck (red) curry. My wife's rice was just OK and the pork was way overcooked, but I thoroughly enjoyed the duck curry. The duck pieces were plentiful, tender and paired well with the sweet, carrot-forward red curry.
The only negative isn't even a negative. More like an oddity: the restrooms. The sign for them are on an exit door at the back of the tiny restaurant where a rotting floor awaits you on the other side. This area is the "foyer" to the sushi place upstairs. You have to cross this area and go through another plain door to find the restrooms that are shared by both restaurants. Definitely gives off speakeasy vibes.
After this meal, we're now open to exploring the Thai restaurants in our area (Frederick is a bit of a drive for us). If we're ever back in Frederick, we'll be sure to come back here.
Great food! Favorite Thai place around.
Dined in at this restaurant and left feeling satisfied and happy. The waitress were very kind and everything on the menu was good.
I have been to Sumittra many times and always left happy and satisfied. Great food and great service.
Wonderful awesome healthy food my favorite mock noodles vegetables tofu rice and iced tea also love all any food 🍱 yummy 😍❤️😍
Food is amazing. Super crowded. Reservations?
This is where I have to eat whenever I am in Frederick. We have even driven from Baltimore just to dine here. The food is excellent with friendly wait staff. I have dined outside with my dog a couple of times. Great to dine outside and watch the world go by.
Actually, walk into this location by mistake. We were looking for Lazy Fish. We ordered the dumpling appetizer, and they were deep fried and came with a sweet soy sauce. Never had them this way, but they were very good. I ordered the Panang chicken curry. The curry was amazing. Sweet than a kick of heat, I couldn't get enough. My wife had the grilled chicken and shrimp salad. She was extremely happy with her meal. Walking into the wrong restaurant turned out to be a good thing.
Just excellent!! Best Thai in local area.
Very friendly staff. Excellent food. Great service. Will definitely be back.
We tried the drunken noodle and fried rice. The noodle were a little hard and the chicken was a little under cooked.
Always really good. The staff treat you like they know you and the menu is great. My fav in Frederick
The food was sooo good I really enjoyed the duck fantasy or something like that but it was soo worth it
Delicious food, ample portions, very friendly service. After placing our order online, restaurant called us to clarify spiciness level. So thoughtful and kind !
I really enjoyed my stay at Sumatra Thai Cuisine. The food was so delicious for a very good price! The waiters were courteous and very fast. They have vegetarian and vegan options and the menu tells you how spicy the food will be and if it contains nuts. Will definitely come again!
This food is PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!
Great dinner for four. Busy night in town. Seated at about 9 pm.
Always amazing! The food it always 10 out of 10!
Food amazing 🤩 Staff amazing 🤩 Vibe amazing 🤩
Can’t believe we’ve been here all this time and never stumbled on this spot before. Definitely the spot to go when you’re downtown Frederick looking for some yummy Thai.
Crispy Basil Chicken 🍜 perfect portion, crispy and delicious
Best Thai food in frederick. spicy basil fried rice, and curry puff is amazing.
So tasty! Staff were kind and efficient, food was delicious, I tried my friends dishes as well and enjoyed every bite. We even came when it was a full house, close to closing time, and the staff kept the energy up on a weekend. :)
Will be visiting again!
Their pineapple fried rice is sooo good, and a huge portion! Always have enough to save for lunch the next day
I knew we were going to have a great lunch when the nice lady greeted us.
We have been to the Frederick area for years and we've never entered. I'm glad we did. Great Thai food. Friendly service. Will come back!
Food is good.
However, the business is profoundly unethical/corrupt. The tax charged exceeds 6% (although it says 6% on the bill). Also, they systematically charge a 18% service charge for parties above 3 persons while it reads "we may charge 18%" in small print at the bottom of one page of the menu.
The food was excellent and the servers were very friendly. Serves food quickly.
Food is amazing. Great quality and the staff is lovely!
Food was very delicious and service was great. One of the best versions of Tom Kha soup I’ve ever had. App and entree was great. Next time we visit Frederick we’ll go back and try more entrees.
