Bamboo Penny's is an exciting new chef-driven restaurant concept featuring the culinary wizardry of a Thai chef, Penny Mufuka. Claiming the space between traditional cooking and contemporary craft, Bamboo Penny’s is bringing tropical Thai flavors to Leawood in style, showcasing bold flavors & fresh ingredients that encompass every color of the rainbow.
We had a wonderful dining experience at Bamboo Penny’s! The ambiance was absolutely stunning, with elegant decor and a warm, inviting atmosphere. A special touch was the beautifully decorated Valentine’s Day corner, which added to the charm and made the experience even more delightful.
For appetizers, we ordered Shrimp in the Blanket and Chicken Satay—both were well-prepared and packed with flavor. The shrimp was crispy on the outside and juicy inside, while the chicken satay was perfectly grilled with a delicious peanut sauce.
For the main course, we tried the Panang Curry and Mango Red Curry, both served with fragrant rice. The flavors were spot on—rich, creamy, and absolutely finger-licking good! The balance of spices and ingredients was perfect, making every bite a delight.
The service was excellent, with attentive staff ensuring we had everything we needed. The food arrived promptly, and the quality was top-notch.
Overall, Bamboo Penny’s is a must-visit for Thai food lovers! From the ambiance to the food and service, everything was exceptional. Highly recommended, and we’ll definitely be back!
I've been to 50+ restaurants in Kansas City and definitely would say this was a top pick. Mango duck, seafood medley stir fry, crispy pork belly and shrimp in a blanket. Stephan had exceptional service and was particularly sweet to my 4.5yo dinner date - definitely went beyond. Would recommend this place and return based on his attentive service alone. Exemplary example of how to get people coming back for sure.
Also, the thai coffee Martini was pretty good.
This is one of our favorite places!!! Every time we go, we have a great time and the food is just delicious!!! And the drinks are amazing too!!! Our bartender made our Carajillo just perfect, it was not in the menu but she made it happen and it was delicious!!! She really made our night even better!!
We love this place!!! Food is amazing!!!
The peanut sauce. The peanut sauce will remain in my mind and soul for eternity. It was so good I can't stop thinking about it.
As far as the actual restaurant, it was lovely! We went in expecting it to be MUCH more casual, but we also did zero research. A family member suggested it to us while we were in the area, and it was fabulous in every way. The food is amazing, the service even better. We had a hiccup with part of our order that was swiftly handled by our server and her supervisor, but then we had amazing food in front of us so I literally did not think about it again. Would definitely recommend for a date night!
It was an absolutely amazing experience all around.
This establishment had it all. The atmosphere was good, the food was delicious, and the service was amazing. All the food came out in a very timely manner as well.
Personally, this is some of the best seafood I've had in a long time, and the curry was fantastic.
Overall, I HIGHLY recommend giving this establishment a try!
This place is SO GORGEOUS. You’ll definitely pay more than you would at a smaller Thai restaurant, but the food is totally worth it - not to mention this place feels super upscale (great place for a fancy date night!). Our server was named Oatmeal and he was wonderful and amazing! We will definitely be back. PS, try the sweet sticky rice with mango. You won’t regret it!
Three friends catching up made this location perfect. We all came here for the first time at the leawood location. It’s set next to the ice skating rink and beautiful decorated for the holidays. Each of our drinks were delicious and well priced. I had the Soju Wanna Martini and it was a delightful refreshing experience. We started with appetizers of the crunchy salad rolls and calamari. Though the calamari was ordinary the salad rolls made up for it. We all agreed they are fabulous and perfect for parties. We went on to dinner, each having something different
Yellow Sen Me with shrimp medium spice, Pennys Pad Thai with chicken and Pad kee Mow with chicken. Served beautifully as pictured and tasted even better.
The atmosphere was enjoyable and not too loud for conversations. Well priced and will definitely be back
Bamboo Penny never disappoints. Great food, attentive service, and lovely ambience. We have had the Penny platter, the fresh spring rolls, chicken satay many times for apps. Their innovative cocktails are worth a try. Most of the mains are delicious. I always get the stir frys, while my partner loves their sea food sampler. Will highly recommend.

Great prices Great food
We have been a few times to Bamboo Penny’s and the food is always good. Service was decent. Nice and clean. Fairly attentive service overall.
Excellent food and service! I had the garlic shrimp, medium sauce with fried rice and it fantastic. I’ll revisit that entree again. A gentleman from Serbia was our waiter (sorry, forgot his name) and he did a great job.
We went for restaurant week and the order came out a little slow but all the food was terrific.
Ordered the pad see eaw, and spring rolls. They were both amazing.
I always like this place, but they are missing one of my top favourite Thai salad dish (yum woon sin) sea food dish .. Super easy to make I just still don’t get it how come this place? The only Thai restaurant don’t have it I wish if they can put it on the menu.
I really like Bamboo. It's an upper scale Thai restaurant. You'll pay a little more than you would in your average Thai place. I had the ginger stir fry duck and it was $32. But I love Thai food. And my dinner was great. I just found out last night that there is an upstairs that is very cool.
The food is fantastic. The Peanut sauce is amazing! I had it on New Years Eve and I crave that taste now.
We’re frequent customers, both for takeout and dining in, and this place never disappoints. The atmosphere is always inviting, and the service is consistently top-notch.
Recently, we had a small issue with a takeout order, but when we reached out, Katie, the manager on duty, handled it like a pro. She was quick to address our concern and really went the extra mile to make sure we were happy.
The food is always amazing, the location couldn’t be better, and without a doubt, this is my go-to spot for Thai food every time.
Wait staff was overwhelmed and forgot so many things including silverware. Food was excellent!
Bland and overpriced during restaurant week.
Food is good, pricying, but good. Restaurant is clean and pretty. Service is terrible. Worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant.
Visited Wednesday lunch with my 2 kids and mom. Asked for a table for 2 adults and 2 kids. They asked if I was part of a group and I said no. They said there was a group with 2 guys expecting more people and kids. Proceeded to say it's just us. I guess they assumed we were part of the (asian) group since we were asian. Not that big of a deal since that happens often. Just a little surprised that happened at an asian restaurant.
Was going to share the red curry with my 19mo old but the server told us it would be too spicy for her so I told her i want the pineapple fried rice with shrimp instead. Out comes both dishes so I told our server that I didn't want the red curry. She took it away without saying anything. We asked her if they had a kids spoon but disregarded that and left. That's when things got weird.
She came to our table about 5 times saying, "everything okay?" and ran away each time. She never looked at us when asking and didn't wait for a response. We gave up on asking for the spoon or anything else. While eating my fried rice, I found a hair. I waited for the waitress to come by. She comes by twice saying "everything okay" and off she goes before I can even respond. Ive been sitting there for 15min not eating and finally we are able to get her attention and tell her about the hair. She says "you have good eyes to find hair" and then just walks away. I was so confused and assumed that she was going to replace my order but she comes back and says "everything okay". I was done. I asked for the check. She took off the red curry but left the pineapple fried rice on the recipe. I was just ready to get out so paid and left. I even left her a 10% tip since she did some work but I was not happy. While headed out, told the hostesses about what happened and they just said sorry and didnt ask much details. One handed me 2 $10 vouchers (the pineapple fried rice costs more than that) and I took it to be polite but not sure if I ever want to be back.
Great food, attentive service. Not a big fan of the Park Place area (crowded, pretentious, too many wild teens hanging out), but this place does not disappoint.
So, where do I begin… especially when I contemplated on whether or not I would leave a review from this one experience because I am here often and I am always recommending people to this place. It’s literally my favorite restaurant!
However, last night I was not reminded of how much I love coming here because of the poor service my friend and I received. To begin, my friend arrived first and requested a seat at the bar or somewhere upstairs if it was open. Was told the upstairs was closed, but when I arrived the greeter instructed that we get seated upstairs. (Okay fine), upon our arrival upstairs the next greeter looked at us, no true greeting so we noticed bar seating available and asked was it okay to sit there and she said, “sure”. So we sat at the bar. The bar hostess was unkind and stated that she needed to ID us which was fine. We’re adults and was used to this protocol. So, moving forward we proceed to show her our ID and in the midst of this she felt the need to express how the state of KS require them to ask proof of ID and so on and so forth. (Again, what was the point of this conversation, we’re at a bar and this is normal). Then she proceeds to explain to us how she was not even to be working that night. (Making us feel totally un- comfortable at this point as though we were bothering her) so instead of making it noticeable we continued to carry on with our night. We ordered drinks and exchanged stories. Another waiter walks by with a handful of bar-ware and says to my friend “this is literally the worse place you could sit” now, for us we thought, if chairs are placed “literally” in this area then clearly its a place for guests to sit. I mean why would we intentionally move seats to an area that isn’t for guests. So we decided to just shift our seats to “accommodate” the waiter who simply was saying we were in his way! So now were feeling even more tension and discomfort, but we decided to carry-on with the night. We tried to make the best of it inspite of how poorly we had experienced service within the establishment from the servers and staff. So much more to share, but I will stop here.
I must say, this was one of my only awkward experiences here and did not feel welcomed or appreciated in the space. I was very disappointed for my friend experience considering this was an out of town visit for my friend. Just landed from the airport and we decided to grab drinks and a lite bite to eat. But this felt like we made a “HUGE MISTAKE”. Sadly, I may not be on a hurry to return as I “only” choose places to dine and spend money where I am appreciated and this certainly was not my experience.
After food was delivered to our table, I asked our waitress for a knife, she chose to pour water & take lunch order at table next to us,before bringing the knife needed for my hot meal, for that, I give a 3 for that service
Mediocre Thai food, definitely not worth the price point. We got Basil fried rice that didn’t taste like basil, pad Thai that tasted like soy sauce and Crab Rangoon with NO crab literally just cream cheese in a fried wonton shell.
Their “house made” sweet and sour was anything but, thick and chunky, seemed like it came from a bag and was doctored to be “original”.
This was the worst Thai food I've ever had in the US. Everything was over-sweetened and over-seasoned and not fresh. The fries were over-fried and dark brown and the som tam was bitter. The staff was rude. The som tam tasted like it was pickled in sugar. I would never go back and would not recommend it.
The peanut sauce. The peanut sauce will remain in my mind and soul for eternity. It was so good I can't stop thinking about it.
As far as the actual restaurant, it was lovely! We went in expecting it to be MUCH more casual, but we also did zero research. For the past few years, my girlfriend and I have been huge fans of the tiger cry beef. It’s definitely one of our favorite dishes. The past couple of times that we have ordered this dish has been a disappointment. At first we thought maybe it was sort of a glitch/small flaw. So we gave it another try and it was the same experience. The third time we had it was today. The flavor and consistency of the steak has been off. The steak seems to be a different type of steak & the flavor seems to be bland. The steak is chewy with lots of fat around it. The flavor is also off and does not seem to be the same recipe/flavor as it used to be. This time around we got a stomach ache after eating a few pieces. We didn’t finish our tiger cry beef. Hopefully all these three times have been a weird mistake. I love this place and speak highly of it. After this experience and a stomach ache after, I felt I had to write a review to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing. Overall I love this spot and will continue to come back for the other dishes!
One of those places that you can't tell someone how nice it is. You have to experience it.
Excellent food and atmosphere. Great place for lunch or dinner or just a cocktail.
First time here.
Cons:
If the chicken lettuce wraps had any chicken in them, I could not find it. And $12 is very expensive for just lettuce and a few noodles wrapped in rice paper. Dipping sauces were both so sweet I didn't care for them. How about having at least one that is just tangy? The sausage appetizer was okay but nothing as special as the menu advertised. Needs a sauce, or something else with it.
One friend ordered the chicken pad thai and it was so spicy he had a reaction. They replaced it with one that was not spicy at all, but so sweet it tasted like dessert.
The ladies at our table split a chicken stir fry which they liked, but it came without the brown rice they had ordered. By the time that showed up we were almost finished.
Also, the house Thai margarita is nothing special.
Pros: The atmosphere is very nice, and our server was also.
Company party held there was fun and food was great!@
Mango duck is always the best! Highly recommend this restaurant. Great holiday atmosphere outside, too.
Super, super delightful Thai cuisine! We really enjoyed our entrees and the appetizer sampler! Our server was super friendly. We will certainly be back!
They offer a decent happy hour but do have an extensive drink menu with plenty of N/A drinks. Some of the best crab Rangoon I've tasted. Very light and crispy wonton!
The food is great, a lot of options.
First time eating here! We came for the food but will come back for the service. Autumn was the best server we’ve had in years. She was attentive, knew the menu, and was genuinely a kind human being. Would go back to Bamboo just for her.
Best Thai food I have ever tasted. The egg rolls are so delicious. The owner is a sweetheart and you can tell she puts a lot of love in to her food
Great curry and servís was amazing!!!!
The penny’s rangoon (crab rangoon) and the pork pan-seared dumplings are my go-to every time I’m here because they’re so good! Cute atmosphere and great location.

Simply awesome
The food here is delicious, I really like it. We will come back.
Yummy!! New place we tried. Will definitely return!! The only maybe bad thing I would comment about this place is the fishy smell when you are just walking in or while sitting at your table.
Food was outstanding. The cocktails were rough. I love a great cocktail and still like a mediocre cocktail, the infused spirits cocktails hurt my feelings. We tried three of them and they all seemed bottom of the barrel spirits soaked in whatever lipstick they tried to throw on that pig. I know you gotta get your bar margins in the 80%+ but at what cost!!!!!!! Me laying in bed writing a review with a quality cocktail sized hole in my heart.
Love the food! We will be back for the food, don’t mind the cooler I’ll have in tow.
Great atmosphere with great service. Ashley our server was amazing and her food recommendations were perfect. The restaurant, the food, the service and the management were great. It was our first time there, but will be back soon for the mango and sticky rice.
I ordered from Uber eats. No utensils, no condiments and lukewarm
I took a client to lunch on Monday 10/21. She had never visited Bamboo Penny. She liked it! I liked it very much. The food is always consistently excellent! the service and attebtion was terrific. I had Gaprow Chicken it was great, so were the dumplings and crab rangoon.
I placed a to-go order. The shrimp in a blanket was crispy but flavorless. The panang curry was really good but they forgot the rice so I had to cook my own at home.
One of our favorite places! Mango sticky rice is amazing!
Food was great, so was service. Location is busy & crowded & the food is over-priced in comparison to all other Pan-Asian when its unique location isn’t taken into consideration. it seems to be a place that you don’t just stumble upon, but rather when you set an intention. An intention to share your wealth & pay it forward to the service industry and treat yourself to some awesome high-priced Chinese food that you’re guaranteed to enjoy. (I took one star away from atmosphere for that reason alone)
I thoroughly enjoyed the ethnically diverse staff, and clientele !
Stefan was our waiter! He was fabulous. We had 20 people and he was on top of everything.
стефан је диван. он је одличан конобар. хвала ти thank you
It was an absolutely amazing experience all around.
The food was not very good. Much better Thai food elsewhere in KC. The service was good, the presentation was good but that’s it. “Disappointing”
We recently dined at Bamboo Penny’s on October 10th with a 7:30 PM reservation for 8 people, which came with a $50 reservation fee, as informed at the time of booking. However, when we received our bills, we were surprised to see a 22% tip automatically included. Unfortunately, the service did not justify this. Our server was rude, never asked if we wanted dessert, didn’t refill our waters, and didn’t check if we wanted additional drinks. It’s unacceptable to be charged such a high tip for such poor service. We expected much better for the price and experience.
I've been to 50+ restaurants in Kansas City and definitely would say this was a top pick. Mango duck, seafood medley stir fry, crispy pork belly and shrimp in a blanket. Exemplary example of how to get people coming back for sure.
Also, the thai coffee Martini was pretty good.
Had a great dinner here last weekend. Solid traditional dishes - I had an amazing red curry with chicken - as well as some modern takes on traditional dishes. Everything we had was terrific. The Rangoon’s are *not* crab but are terrific. Perfectly cooked and creamy. Highly recommend!
Love the pad thai
Beautiful restaurant, hot & tasty food, and awesome cocktails (Thai Coffee Martini is great!) We've been several times and went last night & our server Ashley was wonderful. Will return!
Had a quick dinner with some grad school friends. The food and service from Victor and the drinks from Ashley were outstanding!
The lobster pad Thai was good. Needed a little more flavor. Noodles kind of blan. Lobster egg rolls excellent.
We stopped by there today at 11:30am. Hardly any customers were there. Hostest was busy with paperwork so we had to wait. Strike one. Then waiter waited too long to come take our order strike two. We tried to order the combo appetizer but he refused to substitute one item the paper spring roll for anything else. I asked if the manager could help us he said no. No substitute policy comes straight from Penny. So we told him goodbye and walked out. Strike three How can you loose a $50 tap over something so simple?
One of my favorite places when I visit Overland Park.
Very expensive for the portion size they give. I tipped cash and for some reason they charged 10$ from my card for tip. Charged 7$ more for fired rice but waiter didn’t mention anything about extra charge when I am ordering. Good food but I am not going back to this place again.
We love when Mark plays!
Excellent food, server (Oatmeal) was very knowledgeable about dietary restrictions and very friendly. Excellent atmosphere as well!!
My first experience here was so great! The drunken noodles were delicious and the atmosphere was great. I will definitely come back!
Wonderful dining experience, made extra special by our fabulous server, Ashley! Ashley did a great job taking care of all of our needs! She was very well-versed in the menu and offered some great suggestions. Thanks for making our evening so much fun, Ashley! 😊
Such a lovely experience! The food is presented so creatively, with beautiful touches and care. Our server Oatmeal was a gem! We appreciated the way he attentively cared for our every need!
ashley was an amazing waitress !!
Ashley did amazing!! She was an awesome and sweet waitress for our table!
Very good. Huge menu with many delicious options - noodles, rice, and curry dishes; apps, salads, soups, and more. Ability to add lots of different seafood and meat to most menu items (including full lobster tail). Thai Iced Tea was particularly good, highly recommend.
Excelente servicio y comida. Definitivamente volvería gracias al servicio que me brindó el mesero Gunn. Le agradezco el servicio que me brindó toda la noche. Excelente trabajador
Thank you Gunn, great service and food! Definitely will be back.
The food here is amazing. The seasonal drinks are fun and really good. Service is on top of things and are attentive.
From the first bite of tom kha, everything tasted yummy! The chicken satay was very high quality and perfectly cooked; the accompanying dipping sauces included the standard peanut and a honey-sweet vinegar which also had a honey consistency. The lobster pad thai and salmon panang provided a seafood twist on otherwise traditional dishes. Five star service and vibe from ALL the servers!!
I Walked in they took me and my husband right where my party was, the food was excellent and the scenery was exceptional. It was pretty packed so we kinda had to wait for drinks, while the other half of our party already had there drinks but understandable due to it being pretty packed and on a Sunday, but the service was great. I've been here previously and the food was excellent then, so I will definitely be back for date night. Everything was great. Thanks
Bamboo penny’s always knocks it out of the park. The jumbo shrimp and red curry were amazing! Nothing makes you feel overstuffed or generally bad after eating, even after a generous portion. However, I was shocked when a few of my drunken noodles were undercooked. Flavors, veggies, presentation all were undoubtedly excellent.
I was craving Thai food while visiting Kansas City. This place was amazing! I ordered the Pad Thai and it was cooked to perfection. The tom yum soup was also great. I cant wait to come back when I visit Kansas City again.
Love the space. Atmosphere is great. Definitely an upscale Thai food type of feel.
Cocktails are fun. Food is okay. There’s definitely more authentic Thai food in KC.
Had dinner here with a group of our girlfriends and we had a blast with the foods, service and atmosphere . Highly recommend to check it out at this place!
I recently dined at Bamboo Penny’s, and it was an exceptional experience. The atmosphere was elegant and inviting, with beautiful décor that set the perfect mood for the evening. The service was top-notch, with attentive and friendly staff who made sure every detail was taken care of. The food was exquisite. I would definitely go again.
My favorite place to eat, hand down!
I had a wonderful experience at bamboo on Monday with Trent the bartender. He’s such a lively spirit, knows how to keep a guests attention, and goes above and beyond during his service. Amongst the great food and drinks he is a force to be reckoned with. WATCH OUT LEAWOOD.
Very cool place. Salad just okay. Size really small for price. Fun to sit outside and listen to music. Think atmosphere topped food. Dumpling really good but expensive for the amount.
I just left Bamboo Penny's with my granddaughter and we both left satisfied (if not a bit full).
Our server, Ashley, was one of the best I have ever encountered. She went to great lengths to explain the appetizers and entree selections.
The food was outstanding and I loved the atmosphere. I had the Mango Duck which was prepared expertly. I had 1/2 duck portion and it was more than enough to satisfy my appetite. My granddaughter had pad thai with tofu which she loved.
For dessert, we had the mango cheesecake. If you are a cheesecake lover, be sure to have this - one of the best cheesecakes I have ever had.
Went into Bamboo recently and our server was Trent. I have been several times before but wanted to step out of my comfort zone as I always order the same thing. Very pleased and impressed with his menu knowledge and his ability to recommend dishes based on my previous preferences. As always the food was very good and came out very quickly, even though we ordered at what I believe was the peak of the dinner rush. Always impressed by this restaurant. Highly recommend!
I love this place! The atmosphere is great and so is the food. Ashley was out waitress. She did an amazing job, very knowledgeable and kind!
I love the food at Bamboo Penny’s. It is always hot and fresh. What I did not like was my dining experience on 7/13. Told the host there was 2, he did not ask where we wanted to sit just sent us to the elevator and said take it up and go to the stand. The clues that I would not enjoy sitting up there was the giant fan& cord I almost tripped over when we got off the elevator the other clues were the fans by the bar area and the heat. We got seated in the corner at a small table. The waitress was very friendly and nice. I mentioned that it was really hot up there, she apologized she said we could go back downstairs but the wait would probably be longer now. Which it was so we just stayed up there and tried to enjoy the meal in the heat and get out of there. I left my name with the host but have never heard back. Again 5 stars on the food and waitress but no on the heat and couldn’t enjoy the food.
Edit: I love the fact that the manager got back in touch with me right away and apologized for the dining experience that we had. We went back and they sat me where I wanted to be seated. The staff is very nice and so was the manager on duty that night. We split the appetizer plate and it came out hot and delicious we each got the toffee dessert and that dessert is really good I highly recommend this place and the food.
Ashley was great. She was extremely knowledgeable on the menu and gave a lot of tasty recommendations. Thanks Ashley.
Bamboo Penny’s in Leawood is a true gem for Thai cuisine. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a modern yet authentic vibe. The food is exceptional, bursting with rich, vibrant flavors that make every dish a delight. Our server, Oatmeal, provided superb service, adding to the overall fantastic dining experience. If you’re looking for the best Thai food in town, Bamboo Penny’s is the place to go!
Trent was very knowledgeable and found a good N/A beverage for my partner who can’t drink anymore
It's a juggernaut of a Thai restaurant, bustling with people and noise. I enjoyed the dishes (our group ordered sampler plate, pad thai and pad gaprao), pretty generous helpings, but somehow it felt Americanized? Maybe I'm jaded by my experiences in Bangna and Samut Prakan. Service from Ginger was great! I just wish the noise level was a bit lower.
Along with the excellent food, our server, Oatmeal (yes, that’s his name) made this a wonderful dining experience. He was very attentive and polite and provided us with exemplary service.
The salmon curry and chicken Panang curry were amazing. Great service from Oatmeal! Highly recommend.
Ashley was AMAZING!! I’ve dined at Bamboo Penny's a few times and each time has been wonderful. I’m sure to be back again soon!
Great food, atmosphere and staff!
Our waitress, Ashley, was amazing. She was very attentive and kind.
My favorite place to eat Thai food in Kansas City. Our server Oatmeal was world class. We will be back.
10/10 experience. Beautiful lower dining area, pretty decorations. My top recommendation is the Tiger Cry beef strips, amazing flavor. Also lovely dumplings, and our pad see ew and drunken noodles were amazing. The red quartz wine and mango sticky rice were delightful. Much of this was suggested by our amazing server Oatmeal! He was so attentive and accommodating, had perfect timing. Many thanks to him and Chef Penny for a lovely dinner!
I ordered medium spice have handled a little extra spice. Clean and friendly atmosphere. Our server Oatmeal was kind and attentive.
Food was incredible! Service was ok:(
It was really really good
This was a delightful surprise for me. The atmosphere is light and bright... I took a friend's suggestion on the meal selection. It was delicious. The drinks were also inventive. They can serve any dish in hot, medium and mild.... I was very happy with this restaurant. It will be in my rotation whenever I visit KC.
Amazing food and ambience. Ordered Panseared dumpling with chicken, pineapple fried rice, Panang curry and sweet sticky rice mango. All the items were sooo good. Loved the Panang even more!!!
Love this place! Food is delicious from apps to entrees. Great mocktail options. Beautiful inside with a great patio as well.
This is a great Thursday evening spot! Relaxed on the patio while enjoying dinner & fabulous cocktail!
As a recent transplant from Long Island, NY I was not expecting to find a decent Asian restaurant. I have been blown away by Bamboo Penny’s every single time I have gone. Bamboo Penny’s quickly became my favorite restaurant in KC. The food is always fresh, they have dishes for even the pickiest/diet-restricted eaters. Their alcoholic drinks are just sweet and pretty cocktails but the food and ambience is ON POINT!
It sounds hyperbolic but this is genuinely the best Thai food I’ve ever had. I was traveling through on a work trip and picked this restaurant randomly and got very lucky. Every person I ate with loved their meal and raved about it on the way home. The vegan option I had was great, and from what I heard the non-vegan options were also phenomenal. Prices were very reasonable as well for such a nice place.
****updating my review, used to be 5****now I can’t say the same.
This place used to be amazing, however they have raised prices, I assume to subsidize for their lackluster aqua Pennie’s across the street. (which in itself is very overpriced and not that great.)
I used to love coming here and it was worth the $. The service has since gone downhill, and the as you can see, I paid 25$ for a half filled tray of fried rice. Very disappointed to see how this place has changed/gone down hill recently.
Another thing is the wait staff used to be very top notch, now it seems they are understaffed and overwhelmed. Not sure what has happened recently but this went from my go to 5***** spot to I can’t justify it anymore.
Previous review below.
This place has stupid fire beef fried rice, And incredible appetizers. Honestly I eat here once a week. If you like spicy, go with medium and ask for a spice tray, If you go too hot, you’re toast.
So I've had lots of Thai including in Thailand d and it's all pretty similar...until I came here. The flavors were so much more intense and creamy and amazing and I keep dreaming about it and want to eat here every day. I had the salmon mint salad and my husband had the green curry and both were amazing.
Great service! And great egg rolls!
Went for some live music on a Sunday evening and it was superb! We sat on the patio, weather was beautiful. The service was outstanding, the vibe was great! 1st time trying this place and it was sooooo good! My wife ordered the Massamana i believe is what it was called, delicious! I orderen the beef vegetables and it to was delicious. Started off with the sampler appetizer and we left nothing! We will definitely be back here. Outstanding overall.
Great Thai food and a beautiful atmosphere. Penny is just a doll, and will often stop by just to say hello which is a nice touch. The Beef Noodle Soup is over the top delicious! The cocktails are on point, and they have a great Non-Alcoholic cocktail selection as well.
Great first experience. Upscale environment and amazing food
We are from Lee's Summit and love to travel for better food. We were disappointed in all categories. It was a Saturday dinner date and it was our anniversary.
Server was friendly but not quick. After we ordered the Pennies Sampler platter he did not asK for our entree order or drink order and I forgot to ask for a beer even though I had picked a draft I liked in the menu. When we were about done with the appetizer he came back and we ordered. The sampler was a bit boring honestly just an avg rating. The presentation was nice.
When entrees came they did not bus the table and with the tiny table we could not fit all the plates and we then had to rearrange and let some plates stick off the edge. The busser never came and waiter didn't clear the plate until we had finished the meal.
I got the braised beef massaman curry and the curry was good but the beef had zero seasoning whatsoever. It was tender but just not a good fit for the bold and sweet curry sauce
My wife got the Gaprow beef dish and it was excellent.
We were presented with a check without being asked for a desert choice
We interrupted the waiter later to ask for the mango sticky rice and he then cleared the plates. The check was not in folder.
Around this time we realized our candle holder was empty.
We both liked the sticky rice and the mango was fresh and good. The purple rice was tasty but was not as gooey and sticky as it should be. Could be just their way of doing it. If it was sticky rice dyed purple it was definitely not cooked properly.
Last of all it was just loud. We liked the atmosphere but at a few points could not hear each other because of the sound that was bouncing off the glass and flat ceiling.
Not sure we will return for dinner but could be a good lunch destination.
One of the Best Thai Places in OP
I have visited this Thai restaurant in Overland Park more than 10 times, and it has become one of my favorite spots in the area. The ambience is fantastic, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for a relaxed dining experience.
The food is consistently delicious. The chicken satay and vegetable platter appetizers are particularly noteworthy, always fresh and full of flavor. When it comes to the main dishes, the pineapple fried rice stands out as the best you will find in this area. My personal favorite, the cashew stir-fried rice, never disappoints and has been consistently excellent every time I've tasted it.
However, I have noticed some drawbacks. The service quality has been gradually decreasing, which is a bit disappointing. Additionally, the portion sizes have become smaller over time.
Overall, it's a great place with room for improvement. Despite the minor issues, I still highly recommend it for anyone craving delicious Thai cuisine.
Dining experience was decent. Our server seemed new and didn’t have much familiarity with the menu. When checks came out, he had to go over everyone’s tab individually but even with doing that, tabs still came out wrong so we decided to just pay however needed because it already took him awhile to come back. Food was okay, great take on Thai food but doesn’t feel as authentic. Great environment and atmosphere. We did order drinks but they weren’t as enjoyable, very heavy on the liquor. It wasn’t as busy when we dined but weren’t checked in on as much. Just a “are you doing okay?” but we’d answer with requests and it took awhile to see anyone return…
Wow this place is outstanding. Loved the atmosphere: went with a group but I’d say the low lighting makes it a good romantic restaurant as well.
LOVED the food. We started with the Bamboo Combo and we enjoyed every bit of it. For my main, I had the red curry with tofu and it was delicious. Would definitely recommend and I like that you can choose your spice level.
In addition to their extensive food menu, I was impressed with their cocktail options.
We came on a Saturday night and I think it was around 10pm that they dimmed the lights and started some fun music if you’re looking for a fun night out. I would definitely return!
We've always enjoyed takeout from Bamboo Penny's, and this was our first dine-in experience. Honestly, I doubt we will go back again. Our overall experience and dinner upstairs in the Bamboo Room were a bit disappointing. The Room is a converted rooftop patio. And it feels a bit like a cheap conversion. The food was just OK. Not at all as good and flavorful as we've had with their takeout. Service was OK. But our group of friends made the best of our time together!
Just tried Bamboo Penny’s for the first time for dinner tonight. I will absolutely return again. The Thai Garlic Bites were one of the tastiest things I’ve ever eaten. We all enjoyed our entrees. Service and staff were great! Definitely a must-try in the area!
Popped in for a sip and tried the duck. Just a little too much batter for my liking. I probably didn't order the best thing on the menu so maybe this should be a five star.
I grew up loving Thai food.
This is definitely one of the better Thai restaurants around. It is a little on the expensive side, but everything was delicious and of high quality.
The Panang was very good, delicious, rich, and had a strong peanut flavor.
The Phad See Ew was also very good, tofu, broccoli, wide rice noodles with a dark soy sauce.
I definitely look forward to getting back down in the area again and trying more of their dishes.
The restaurant has a lovely and spacious atmosphere with lots of plants.
The service was good and friendly, they seemed knowledgeable about their dishes and veg options.
Highly recommend checking it out if you have a chance.
Good food, service is great, atmosphere is wonderful
When I first started going here it was amazing, now the food portions are so small for the price. Got a Penny’s fried rice with vegetable with less than 2 cups total on my plate and paid $23. I just think rice and noodles are cheap, throw in extra if you’re charging your customers so much for that dish. I use to go a couple times a week with the girls at work but I feel like every time we come, it’s less and less food. AND PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THR GNATS! I can’t eat my food without swatting the air the entire time to keep them off my food. Not sure what the gnats are for but it’s been like that since they opened. I think it’s more of a location thing than a restaurant thing, not sure.
First time having Thai food and my first time having Duck! Food was really tasty and their version of the expresso martini was delicious as well.
Amazing experience and food was delicious!
The price is high and quantity is low.
What a meal and experience!!!
From the cocktails to the dessert, amazing! Our waitress was extremely helpful and made the experience that much easier for first-timers and so fun!!
Cant wait to bring out friends - we had the duck and shrimp - portions were so generous.
Please come to the Northland!!!
This place is great. I am not even a Thai food fan. But I can say that this place changed my mind. The drinks were great, the atmosphere wonderful and the food even better. The tiger cry sauce will make you cry and laugh from enjoyment at the same time. Highly recommended.
Food, cocktail, ambience we're all 5 stars. Delicious!
I had lunch recently at Bamboo Penny’s, and it did not disappoint! My friend and I shared & ordered the Papaya Salad and the Bamboo combo; The combo is Pennys rangoon, spring rolls, dumplings, and eggrolls.
The papaya salad was delicious, light and refreshing! It was a nice day and we sat outdoors. They have a beautiful patio.
I had heard of this place and had been wanting to try it for a couple of years so I was excited to finally be nearby. When I asked the host if there was better availability inside or outside he shrugged so I chose outside where a few other tables were seated. Unfortunately after 15 minutes of waiting on the patio with no server, my husband and I returned our menus to the front desk. They didn’t seem surprised so I can only assume this happens often. By the time we were seated at the patio of the restaurant next door, we noticed another couple was being sat at Bamboo Penny’s at the exact table where we had been. We received drinks and appetizers before the couple at Bamboo Penny’s even received water, which just confirmed to me that this is their standard level of service.
Fantastic restaurant with amazing food. The green curry is my go-to dish, but honestly everything tastes so good. Highly recommend.
Such a cute little restaurant. I went here for the first time with a friend for dinner. The restaurant is very elegant with a beach / Hawaiian vibes - lots of flowers. We ordered crab rangoons to share and those were brought to the table very quickly. I ordered the Drunken Noodles and my friend got the Cashew stir fry - both were DELICIOUS. The staff were very attentive and professional. I’m already planning my next trip to Bamboo Penny’s!
