Cozy family-run restaurant for classic Thai dishes, plus vegetarian & gluten-free options.
Thai restaurant right off of 22nd and University. Nice little place. Family owned with a traditional menu. Wife got Spicy Basil chicken with excellent flavors and a heat scale of 4. Gotta sày i expected it to be hotter. It was delicious though.
I got Red Curry chicken heat scale of 3, and it wasn't spicy enough either, but it was also excellent with plenty of Thai flavors. I have had coconut based Thai food In the past, this was the tastiest by far. We both got hot chai tea which was not a house blend but was a higher end tea company that was also excellent. We enjoyed the meal so much we ordered spicy Thai noodles to take home. Food portions were more than enough and with dumplings as an appetizer (tasty also) and two teas, we spent $70. I usually complain about prices this high at restaurants , but I'm not because the food was that good.
We were from out of town and have had Thai in several cities. This was up at the top! The Panang Curry with chicken with one spice was perfect! My husband loved the Spicy Chicken Thai Fried, too! Great service!
This neatly tucked away eatery serves some of the top three Thai Food within the Des Moines Area that offers a variety of options for vegans and those wanting succulent proteins. An appetizer called The Sampler allows you to try a variety of tasty small starters. The Wonton Soup is seasoned to perfection, and my fried catfish was simply amazing. Parking is ample and the price for fresh, creative and flavorful entrees are reasonable. Try this quaint Thai Restaurant for yourself. I’m sure you will find something on the menu that will meet your taste warehouse that is full of palate goodness.
One of the best meals I've ever had! The atmosphere was very relaxing, the dish choices were staggering, and the level to which the foods for every dish complimented each other truly left nothing left to desire, especially with the ability to customize the spice for every dish! I haven't had Thai food before, but if this is what it's like I love it! Appreciate the desert options as well, and would absolutely recommend the macarons! Absolutely will be coming back.
We were recently disappointed with delivery. Previously we’ve had the cashew chicken and thought it was phenomenal. What we received was just chicken and cashews in a hot sauce without the depth of flavor we’ve had before. Three pieces of green pepper in the whole dish. Also got the Thai dumplings, which were so bland. Just a bready substance in wrapping with none of the ingredients listed. I don’t know what happened to this place. It used to be prepared with care and love. So sad!
Very nice customer service and the food tasted very fresh. The fried rice was good and so was the Pad Thai, the Khao Soi was a different, it was thick, creamy a little too much coconut for my me but overall it was editable. I would come here again if I'm in town and try other stuff on the menu.
Perfect spice and flavor on both dishes. We had the pineapple shrimp curry and fresh n gingerly with beef.

Very charming waitress and delicious food, summer role best ever
The best food in the metro. It's my favorite goto place. It's never been anything but Amazing!!! If you have not been here you are missing out!!!
Best restaurant in the area! The staff is super friendly and me and my family are regulars!
The food is always delicious and plentiful. The simple decor and quaint atmosphere always make for a chill night out. Staff is always friendly and accommodating, which makes for a great experience every time.
Really good food. Fresh, cooked with care.
Absolutely love this place! Best food I've ever had to this day! Definitely recommend!

I should have stopped at two stars... But so good.
Best Thai in town!
If ratings were based on percentages, rather than stars, I would give Eat Thai a 99%. Certainly worth any kind of distance you need to travel to get here, I was just taken aback by one tiny detail.
Thai food is one of my top two favorite cuisines, so I am quite finicky about how it's done. I worked in a Thai restaurant (in Ohio) for a year and had my expectations raised quite high on what good Thai food looks and tastes like.
Eat Thai is absolutely authentic, and the only one in the Des Moines area I have found to reach that very high bar! I ordered the Spicy Thai Fried Rice, level 4 heat, and it was perfect! Subtle yet wildly dynamic flavors that left me wanting even more ^,^
So much so, I took home some Tom Yum, which hit the spot!
The only thing that was slightly disappointing was the gyoza, but that would not keep me from returning. I found my Thai place in Des Moines! Guaranteed I will be back! Sooooo good!
We love Eat Thai. Great food. Great staff. Always a friendly face. We love their spice levels (likely slightly different than other Thai restaurants in the area).
Excellent Pad Thai!!
Eat Thai is probably my new favorite restaurant. Their crabrangoons (crab delights) are the absolute best! If you're looking for curry, this is the most delicious curry you can get! 5 stars will eat here again...and again and again.
Thai food is probably our favorite cuisine (we’ve spent 2 months traveling in Thailand) but our recent experience having lunch here was disappointing. The pad thai was red in color and had a different flavor than normal- also the noodles were a bit mushy. The green curry was not very good - and the tom kha soup was not the best either (it was too thick and brownish in color). Pretty much everything was off somehow - either taste or smell or texture or appearance. The server was very kind and the bathrooms were clean though. Your mileage may vary. Just bummed out because I really wanted to love this place
Our waitress Brenda makes our dining experience the best! She’s always so kind and helpful to my husband and I. Thankyou so much Brenda. The food is amazing and so is the space!
THE BEST THAI FOODS IN TOWN!
REAL!! authentic teste of thai foods.
The service is always great♡ love the owner, always have smile on her face !
They think that drivers shouldn't stand up for themselves against their cheapskate customers. I also tried eating here once. It was supposed to be lobster sauce but was more like snot. I was so glad when they banned me because the wait for food here was always 20 plus minutes. Drivers don't have time to wait like that. We don't get paid by the hour. Edit- my review is correct. I believe you that you don't use lobster as an ingredient, hence why my lobster sauce was like snot. You've never once quoted a wait time to a delivery driver. If you saw me in person you would know who I am and you would know that my review is correct because you asked me about it a few days after it happened. You banned me from your store months after I don't even know what I did. I know it was months though because I went months without going to your store. All of a sudden I come back one time and I'm banned. I didn't even make it out the door before you banned me. So I know it wasn't something I did that time.
Food was excellent and staff was attentive and friendly with prompt service. Clean and pleasant atmosphere.
I just ordered appetizers and they were the best summer rolls and chicken satay I have ever had… and the peanut sauce was five-star!
True hospitality. Thank you.
Best pad thai ever. The food is excellent and the people are wonderful.
Love this place! Their orange chicken is the best I’ve ever had and their summer rolls are amazing! We usually order take out and have never had an issue with an order. The employees are always great! Highly recommend.
This food is spicy and great quality and very authentic. The service is perfect and the food comes in 15-20 minutes.
Glad I got my wife to try this over her preferred Cool Basil across the street. She is now a convert. High quality authentic Thai food with much more flavor and complexity - and higher quality ingredients - than one can typically find at the usual basic Thai restaurants around Iowa. Good service and atmosphere as well.
Wow! Delicious! Fabulous service. A+
Hidden Gem! I’ve never been disappointed 💯

Small, intimate, authentic Thai restaurant. We’ve lived in West Des Moines for 6 years and this is one of our favorites. Very friendly service!
It’s unfortunate that a place with decent food has terrible business practices. The service is lacking. Staff makes you feel unwelcome and don’t honor their business hours. They’ll turn you away an hour before closing. If you’re open until 8pm then that doesn’t mean 7pm, or at least put up notice. Also they overprice their deserts yet they claim it’s a special. There are many other places around town to choose from where you’ll be appreciated for your business.
This was soooooo good. Fresh af gyoza, killer pad se ew, lovely pineapple fried rice and the best Panang I’ve had in years. I live in dc and once complained about DSM not having great Thai (good not great) but this is great. 10/10.
Kids loved it too and the service makes it worth a dine in experience.
From my 10 y/o niece:
The food was so good and the waitress was so kind. we had a blast time I recommend it. I would go every day if I could and it is all homemade/fresh!😍😍
Can't believe I've never reviewed Eat Thai... I've eaten here probably 25-30 times over the years and never had a bad meal. Incredibly consistent, and the staff is alway super friendly. Easily my favorite Thai place in DSM.
My wife and I stopped in for lunch today. The server was very helpful and polite while explaining menu items as it related to vegetarian and vegan ingredients.
The menu listed my selected dish - Spicy Basil - consists of a choice of meat (chicken, pork, beef, tofu, or mixed vegetables) sauteed onion, bell peppers, carrot, and spicy chili sauce and basil leaves. I selected vegetables as my choice.
When my Spicy Basil arrived (see attached photo), my wife and I exchanged puzzled looks. I received the main ingredients, and I guess, vegetables - because a single green bean lurked under the onions. Some shredded romaine was the salad, and a scoop of Jasmine rice accompanied the dish. The food was good, but even for a lunch-sized menu and price, it was easily the skimpiest portion I've ever received in an Asian restaurant in the metro. I say this in comparison to similar establishments - Thai Flavors, Tsing Tsao, etc. - when considering lunch menu, price, and portions. All places are different, I agree. And in that regard, Eat Thai Thai Eatery, was different and notable. It's notable for the smallest portions I've ever received.
Our server checked on us, asking if everything was ok. I didn't know how to respond; the service was good, the food was ok. Since it was our first visit, we didn't know what to expect; upon reflection, however, I wish I'd asked if this is their typical portion size for $11.
My favorite Thai food restaurant. The food is delicious. I highly recommend.
I have come here since before it was Eat Thai! I knew the original owner when it was King & I! I have been coming to this restaurant for 20 years. Even under different owners they have stayed consistent with the quality, flavor, and service. I have tried many other Thai locations in and outside of Des Moines. This is the one place I come back to time and time again.
Food was ok. Nothing spectacular
I ordered my food to go so I cannot speak on the atmosphere. But I was unsatisfied with the food. I ordered pad see ew which I typically see as a moist almost wet noodle dish covered in the sauce. The food I received was incredibly dry. I then assumed they probably used some sort of dry seasoning. But it tastes PLAIN. As if there was no seasoning on it. I don't live in Des Moines so I don't know if other Thai places are like this here. But this was subpar for me. I love leaving good reviews when I can, but I just couldn't do it for this food.
This was not good to say the least. I was visiting Iowa and on the hunt for some good Thai food. I say that this place had decent reviews and decided to give it a try. The pad Thai was horrible. It tasted and felt like baby mush. I eat Thai food all the time (on the east coast) so I thought it would be a standard/simple dish in Iowa but boy was I wrong. I have no idea how someone could rate this place above a 2. I honestly would give it a 1.5 because it was ready fast and it was only 8min from my hotel. After this experience, I decided to stick to the chain restaurants and bought pre-packaged food from the grocery store because the local food in Iowa was not good. Sorry.
Excellent place for lunch.
Love the food, people are awesome. Remember your name, like Norm from Cheers!
I'd give zero stars if I could. I wanted to give the restaurant my business on my meal hour. They are a little bit ways from my job. So I attempted to order to have my meal ready when arrive. The host to answered the phone informed me due to customer complaint you can not call ahead for dine orders. I won't argue with policy even if it weird. Then asked if I could do a pick up order was told yes. I said okay I'll just order it as pick up then sit down and eat it when I'm there. The host kept encouraging me to order when I arrived even though I explained to her my time restraint. Needless to say ordering it as a pick up order and getting there and eating it at the table wad also an issue. I won't even attempt this place again her argument was customer complaints well now you have a whole other complaint. I called a Thai place near them with a better rating and got an order in no issue.
Great food and amazing service!
Love this place. Best Thai food in town, have tried everything on the menu and have not been disappointed. The servers are wonderful.
Spring rolls were not double. We're ripped from the heat of the meat. Larb did not have Romania lettuce as most true Authentic foods. That's really disappointed 😔
We had another great dinner at Eat Thai tonight. The food was wonderful as always. Sorry, no photos because we were hungry. We always get the Fresh ‘n Gingerly with chicken, 2.5 stars spice level. So good! We also ordered the crab delights which are the best crab rangoons you’ll ever eat. They’re not shaped like regular crab rangoons and come in a very thin wrapper so they practically melt in your mouth. They are little purse-shaped bundles of goodness. We love them so much that we call them Heavenly Delights instead of crab delights. They are served with the best sweet sauce. Try them. You’ll thank me later (and never want to eat the regular kind again).
My husband also got the Tom Kha Kai soup at 2.5 stars spice level. That’s his favorite. We’ve tried other dishes there and they’re all great but we keep going back to the Fresh ‘n Gingerly because we love the ginger flavor so much. You really can’t go wrong here. All of their dishes are so wonderful. We’ve tried a lot of Thai restaurants locally and honestly feel this is the best Thai restaurant in town.
Plus, Aom the owner, is always so nice and friendly. She also owns the two Ocha Bubble Tea & Dessert Cafes in Windsor Heights and Ankeny. Tonight she told us she’s going to be opening a dessert cafe inside Eat Thai soon. She gave us a sample of her green tea molten lava cake and it was SO good. I can’t wait to try more of her desserts.
If you haven’t eaten here, you need to. The flavors in the food are so good. The food is always super fresh. Very friendly staff.
We were so impressed with the Eat Thai restaurant! The servers were outstanding and so kind!
My favorite local Thai restaurant. The drinks are tasty as well as the food. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff.
The staff here is sooo friendly! The food is amazing. We have accidentally ordered the wrong dish and still loved it. Can't say you can do that any many places. We go here fairly frequently now for lunch. Highly suggest a spice level of 3!!!
Very nice customer service and the food tasted very fresh. The fried rice was good and so was the Pad Thai, the Khao Soi was a different, it was thick, creamy a little too much coconut for my me but overall it was editable. I would come here again if I'm in town and try other stuff on the menu.
Great service
Nice food
Fantastic food and great service, and all at an affordable price. We used to go to a Thai place in Ankeny but their quality went way down. We are so happy to have found this place. The crab delights were crispy and fresh, and the chicken pad thai was perfect! Worth the drive across the city. We will be coming back here again!
Great service, food was delicious and flavorful. Will definitely be going back.
Great food and service.
Great service & delicious food! Went for lunch wasn't crowded.
Restaurant was clean and modern. We were immediately greeted and service was prompt and friendly. Food was fresh and delicious! Plenty of parking. Will be back!!
Staff is very attentive and the food is amazing! Must try the Mango Salad along with your meal. It's so refreshing. My favorite restaurant!
Extremely friendly and excellent service. Food was absolutely delicious!!
Great place to eat if you haven't tried it you definitely should.
Amazing, best Thai food around and service is amazing. A+++ Will eat again
Exceedingly authentic Thai food. After all, the owner and her chef husband are from Thailand, cooking Mom's recipes.
Every dish I have tried has been delicious 🤤 clean and friendly.
Good Thai food. The place looks really clean and the service is good. Good place to EWR family style.
I stopped in and I wanted foe, but they said noodle soup was comparable. Loved it!
I've tried a LOT of Thai around town, and this place is my go-to. Their chicken pad Thai is delicious - not too sweet, really good, tender chicken. Their service is incredible - the server that's there the most is so polite and attentive, and does a fantastic job even when they're slammed.
Recently discovered this place, and already a repeat customer. Service was excellent and food was awesome. Adjust the spiciness of your order to your taste!
Awesome place. We eat there at least once a week for over a year now.
Love this place for their noodle dishes.
Great food, and the staff were able to dial in to my exact level of preference for spicy. Everything was delicious!
We tried this place on a whim tonight and we will be back! The Panang Curry and the Pad Thai are awesome! Price is fair and portions are huge!
I can't think of a better place in Des Moines to eat Thai food. Highly recommended. Great staff. Delicious food. Very pleasant experience every time I eat here.
Very nice restaurant, clean comfortable, great food, good service.
Best Thai is DSM. Small family run business with high quality food. Best Panang Curry I've had since Ban Thai closed years ago. Staff is kind and warm. This place can be busy, and they run with a very small staff, owner is the server and she is such a delight.
Small restaurant. The food is delicious, the service was excellent & we received our food very quickly. We will definitely be back.
I order for delivery frequently. They are always friendly and the food is always delicious. My kids love to eat it as long as I keep the spice below a 2. Even awesome left over! Love it.
Update: Still the absolutely best Thai food in town. We are so lucky to have this amazing restaurant. Still a family favorite. Now they've added fruit slushes to the menu. These are real fruit slushes and they are the perfect compliment to a spicy meal. Remains a family favorite!
I tried Eat Thai after a strong recommendation from a trusted source. I have been back many times. The food is excellent, as is the service. They have easy on line ordering.
It's an amazing place to eat. The Staff is very nice and want you to enjoy your time.
New favorite place! Food is amazing!
Ive been coming here for years and have never had a bad experience. Everyone has been amazing, great food, ambiance and authentic, the very best!!
Tasty food at a reasonable price.
Wow! This restaurant is the best Thai restaurant in town. We have ate here 3x now and it is amazing. Consistent, friendly service, amazing portions, convenient location, did I mention friendly service? We have ate at a lot of the other Asian restaurants in town and none can nail the experience in every facet like Eat Thai. We won’t go anywhere else, and you shouldn’t either! This place is THE. Best.
The wait waw long at cool basil down the street, so we tried this place close by. Should have waited for cool basil. Food was okay.
Let me start by saying our server was GREAT, & Very Friendly!!! I ordered Thai Tea, & my Mother stuck with water. I even got a second Thai Tea, as it was the best thing that we were served there, it was very 👍🏼🥰When our food started to arrive that’s when it started to go downhill🙄 We got Ragoons they were fresh , & crispy, but just had an odd/sat too long before being cooked taste 🥴Then we each ordered Tom Kha Kai/Gai soup @ a #2 & #3 heat, with chilies 🌶 on the side… even with the chilies the Tom Kha Kai/Gai was SO BLAND, NO FLAVOR, & this is our go to when we eat Thai, so we Know what flavors it Should have, & it was VERY LACKING, & then when we told our server, she apologized, but nothing was done like comp a tea or SOMETHING, also no management ever came to speak with us, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WAS DONE!!! My Mom didn’t even ask to take the rest with her she was so disappointed, I knew I could at least fix it so it actually tasted like it should, so I took the majority of my large bowl with me, & when I got home I added the proper ingredients, & it was Great, but when you go out to eat & pay that much for a meal, it shouldn’t have to be taken home & FLAVOR ADDED!!!!! We both often say “Don’t Stop There Unless You want To Take The Soup Base Home, & Add The Flavor!” As we drive by!!!
VERY DISAPPOINTING, AS WE ARE HUGE FANS OF THAI FOOD!!!!!🙄😢WE WILL NOT BE DINING THERE AGAIN!!!!!🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
I had chicken pad thai and the wife had chicken fried rice. Best in Des Moines. BOOM!
5/22/2022 Update: Still the best in town! Year after year.
This is such a cute place. Their food is excellent too!! I drove by this place so many times. I wish I had stopped in MUCH sooner.
This was our first time eating at this restaurant. We went with another couple who eat there frequently. For appetizers, they ordered the lettuce wraps basil style and we ordered the Thai dumplings. For the main course, they always get the fried rice. My wife ordered the panang scallops and I chose the yellow curry with chicken. Everything was delicious. Our waitress was one of the nicest I've ever dealt with. She kept telling us to take our time and enjoy our meal, and offered suggestions about what to oreder. She stopped at our table several times to make sure we didn't need anything. At the end of the meal, she told us we could stay and talk with our friends if we wanted. If they had been busy, it may have different. Still it was a nice gesture on her part. Definitely going back again.
Tried to go to hibachi for mother's day, with no reservations (fail), and we're lucky enough to give this a shot, because it was close.
Wow. Best crab (rangoon) delight we have ever had. Amazingly delicate, flaky, and generous. Portions are a bit smaller for appetizers, but the flavours and quality are through the roof.
Pannang curry was excellent.
We will be going out of our way to come here again, and are already planning our next trip.
Always great food and friendly people!
We were in the area and was going to eat at a different place but saw this as we were walking by and decided to try it instead and we are SO glad we did! It was better than other Thai I have had in the past. I got the mild beef pad Thai which was the perfect amount of spice for me! My fiancé had the spicy pepper steak rice and it was great as well! He said next time he will probably do the medium because as the kind woman told us, they love their spice 🤣 we also had the beef lettuce wraps stir fry style as an appetizer and it was super good! The woman who waited on us was absolutely wonderful and probably one of the sweetest women I have ever met. You can truly tell they love their restaurant. We will definitely be back!
Great food and service.
Best Thai restaurant in Des Moines. Flavorful food and cozy interior. Moving out of state soon and this place is one my partner and I will miss the most.
We love this local gem. Though modest in size dont let that fool you! The food is bursting with flavor and generous in portion for the money. We probably bring dinner home 3 times a month. We like the Yellow Curry/noodle, Red Curry, Chicken noodle and the Thai Fried rice. Owner is hands on and wants you to be happy.
The food here is amazing. Best Thai food in the mid west, the service is amazing, this place is a must.
Very good. Enjoyed my lunch
Best Thai in town. Quality ingredients, and friendly efficient service make it a weekly lunch stop for me. Try the Pad See Ew and wonton soup. Their Tom Kha is the best I've had!
Waited for a long time to receive the worst Pad Tai I've ever tasted! Dry and flavorless, so disappointing 😞
We accidentally stumbled upon this restaurant and it was such a happy accident! Not only was our food delicious but the food came out fast and our server was so nice and attentive! She gave recs and refilled our waters consistently. I recommend this place for good Thai food
Ordered sesame chicken, got a nasty bowl of watery, unbreaded, chicken soup with sesame seeds on top. Threw it in the trash, went and picked up pizza.
We were looking for a nice Thai restaurant for date night, and this place did not disappoint. The service was wonderful and quick and the food was delicious. Portion sizes where bigger than expected and flavor was out of this world. We will be back.
Loved the cozy atmosphere! Good customer service. Delicious food!
Good food, good service, and did I forget to mention , good food
Flavor was spot on. Good value for portions received. Staff very friendly and efficient. Also conscientious about distancing and masking. This was a good stop in our day.
First time trying Thai food. It was amazing. Waite staff was knowledgeable and helpful. Service was so quick. The food was amazing. Great selection and great descriptions. I loved that they could adjust the heat of the spice. We can't wait to go back
Such friendly staff and delicious food!!!
Delicious food great service.
The food is fantastic and the staff are all super sweet and friendly. One of our favorite places easily
Good Thai food
This is my favorite Des Moines restraunt so far! It is flavorful and they can adjust seasonings to your taste. There were several curries and many noodle dishes.
Service was a bit slow, where isn't these days, but worth the wait! My whole family loved the food. Highly recommend!
Authentic, quality and friendly service.
Delicious food and such a warm hearted family business. Love supporting them and the Eat Thai team!
Food was pretty good but not many drink options. Very good service too.
Original and friendly
Service was so friendly and customer centric. The pad Thai was great but the spring roll was surprisingly good. We had the mousse what a way to wrap up lunch.
Original and friendly Tai
They're a top notch Thai restaurant, a little gem. And will make it very spicy if you ask...so far yet to be disappointed by any item on the menu. Give it a try!
Friendly and super nice staff. Great food
Fantastic curry!! Got the panang chicken for me and green chicken for kid and the Sampler appetizer. Everything is great and the people are so friendly. This is a hidden gem in West Des Moines and is my new go to place for curry!
I really really love the pad tai and green curry with tofu!!!! Absolutely would go again! Yummy! Oh and the Chai tea was sooo good to!!
Best curry in town! I've tried them all. This is by far the BEST! Great service, friendly people, amazing food. If you don't eat here, you're missing out.
Wunderbar!
My son really enjoyed the dumplings and wants everyone to know how good they are.
We were headed to famous daves across the road. They were super busy, and seen this place had really good reviews, so we stopped. It was a very good decision, they gave us ample attention, including our two year old, and the food was amazing. We will be back for sure.
my favorite local restaurant. couldn't recommend it more!! have been going here for almost 10 years :) highly recommend the tofu massaman curry!
Good heat to the dishes and staff is very friendly, but food was way overcooked, especially the tofu.
Panang curry is my go to here 🤤 I can’t get enough! The food and owners/employees are all incredible people. ❤️
Got delivery, paid for and ordered what we thought would be full dinner portions, but received small lunch sized portions(with full size pricing). VERY DISAPPOINTING! The red curry was awkwardly sweet, and the bamboo stir fry tasted spoiled. Nothing was remotely satisfying. Will not be ordering again. I'm surprised this place has such high reviews.
Catfish Farm Curry is the best 👍
