The price should not matter when you’re eating, good food that satisfies the pallet the belly, and even allowing you to take a baggie home filled with great leftovers that taste just as good the next day as it did the day you had it so I definitely suggest and recommend the hibachi grill. My name is Alex Harris, and I am a frequent and enthusiastic foodie who loves to attend Chi Tung Restaurant. This is absolutely one of my favorite hibachi grills. I haven't found a better place. Recently, I visited Chi-Tung on 8/4/2024, and unfortunately, one of your waiters had the nastiest attitude. I understand everyone can have a bad day, but it's not okay to take it out on others.

What Happened: Upon entering Chi-Tung, I signed the electronic guest list and waited near another party of guests who were also waiting to be seated. The hostess asked if I was dining alone, to which I responded, "Yes." She told me to hold on for a moment while she checked something. When she came back a few seconds later, she told me to follow her. On the way to seat me, she mentioned that she was going to seat me with a party that had just been seated a few moments ago, but she wasn’t sure if they had ordered yet. However, they did have a seat available, and I could just let the waiter know. This seemed fine to me.
Immediately after I was seated, the man in the picture appeared. He went behind the hibachi grill and turned it on. He then took out his notepad and began what I thought was the chef double-checking the previous orders that had been taken. As I've been to Chi-Tung many times, I know it's common practice for the chef to check orders before starting to cook. When he got to me, I greeted him and advised him that I had just been seated by the hostess and had not given an initial order.

After I made that statement, the waiter just stared at me and didn’t say anything. I sat there puzzled, wondering what I had said wrong. He then rolled his eyes at me, shook his head, and went to the next customer. I was so confused, and yet, he still didn’t explain what was going on or why he was seemingly upset. The customers at the table had to tell me that I had made it just in time and no orders had been taken. Instead, the waiter wanted to know how many people were with me. No one was sitting next to me on my side of the table, and I didn’t know that was what he was asking. I literally thought he was the chef.

I tried to tell the waiter what I was told, but he just ignored me and walked off. I have never been treated so rudely at your restaurant. I am in disbelief, especially after years of coming there by myself, as well as with family and friends. I don’t know if he acted this way because he knows his tip is already included in the bill, and so he doesn’t take customer service seriously, believing he can treat people any kind of way. I am not the type of person who will become indignant in public or argue, so I decided to write in about my issue and post my experience on google. I hope that you resolve this so that he never treats any other customers in this manner. I have included his picture as well as a copy of my receipt.

Restaurant Review for Chi Tung in Evergreen Park:

My dining experience at Chi Tung in Evergreen Park was centered around the hibachi side, and overall, it was a pleasant evening with some hits and misses.

The hibachi chef who entertained us during the meal was both entertaining and polite, adding a fun element to the dining experience. However, he tended to be heavy-handed with the soy sauce and garlic butter, which made some of the dishes a bit overwhelming to eat.

We opted for the shrimp and chicken combo, and while the food was decent, the flavors of soy and garlic were once again a bit overpowering. Despite this, the dishes were well-prepared and satisfying overall.

The service at Chi Tung was a standout aspect of the evening. Our server, Isabella, was attentive, accommodating, and provided helpful tips when she learned it was my first visit. Her suggestion to request lighter soy seasoning next time was appreciated and showed a level of care for the customer experience.

The atmosphere of the restaurant was comfortable and relaxing, setting the stage for a pleasant dining experience.

In conclusion, while there were some areas for improvement in terms of flavor balance, the overall experience at Chi Tung was positive. I would consider returning, armed with the knowledge of how to customize my order to better suit my preferences. With friendly service and a cozy ambiance, Chi Tung is a restaurant worth revisiting.

Food was great once upon a time. They have been shorting the ingredients in their food, for example, egg foo young chi tung special, it contains shrimp, chicken and beef, today it only had one piece of shrimp nothing else, I took it back, I was told the piece were cut up very small, what a joke!!!. I ordered two weeks before order was burned really bad, I asked to have my order to be replaced, I was told I couldn't order from there again, really!!!. Great Customer will not be returning.

Had the lunch buffet. Not bad for $15/adults. Comes w/ hot tea and cup of soup. Had my fill of the fried chix wings that seemed fresh, not frozen. The salt pepper fried fish/shrimp was pretty decent too. Other entrees: sweet sour chix, black pepper beef, chix kow, general so chix, shrimp fried rice, chix egg foo young, chix egg rolls and assorted desserts.

Glad they brought the buffet back, however we won't be back. It's expensive with very little choices. Why is an 8 year old the same price as an adult? I was never offered a drink.

They said it would be a 58-minute wait for Hibachi and turned out to be like 20 minutes or so. They need to seriously look into a better way of keeping customers warm who are sitting by the front door. The Hibachi experience was good, a very entertaining chef, and plenty of food to take home.

Waited 30- 1 hour to order we talked to two other servers to see if they could get our server and still had to wait another 20 minutes. The food was really good tho I recommend the orange chicken.

The Buffet is Back!!! Delicious! Always FRESH! Loved the Sweet Potato Sushi.

Excellent buffet with tasty choices including dessert. Pleasant prompt service. Will return soon.

I love this place. The food is good, always fresh. You have the option of getting brown rice with your entree instead of the traditional white rice. They also have a buffet Mon - Fri. I think it's from 11:30am-2:30pm. Buffet is really reasonable and they also include soup with the buffet. I highly recommend. Ask for Jin, she's the best!

Came on a Sunday with a reservation of 1:35-1:38 time wait. Left 25 mins later after waiting that long. Table was ready but didn't bother to call us or seat us. Young lady working in the front looked obviously frustrated and unhappy. Attitudes of staff did not feel welcoming. Took our business elsewhere. Over crowded waiting space with no organization or crowd control.

I like this place. It's pretty good for the price. The lemon drops weren't worth it.

This restaurant use to be so busy on a Friday night that you had to wait at least 30 minutes to get a table. Now you can just walk in and I understand why. The food is not as good as it use to be. I know because I get the same dish every time I come here. And it was not good. The service was great as always. That is something that has never changed. The restaurant was very cold. So cold that it made my food cold before I was half way finished eating it.

When it come to coconut hot and sour soup.. this is place I'd rather get it from. But they have been letting me down for a couple of years now. I purchased 2 soups on 1/9/25, one was ordered as XX spicy, the other...just regular. There was no difference in either as a matter of fact.. not spicy at all. Not to mention something I'd noticed over the last couple of years... WHERE'S THE COCONUT MILK CHI TUNG.. HUH? The soup is watered down. I come from Hobart Indiana to get this soup at least twice a year. I'm so disappointed.

My favorite Chinese Restaurant

This was our second time going, and the food was very good. I thought the shrimp fried rice lacked flavor, but everything else was good.

We have been eating Chi Tung since the orginal restaurant on 95th before they built the new one. Quality and taste has definitely declined. Not many vegetables in Pad Thai or Chicken fried rice.

I absolutely LOVE this place. I have gone here so many times I lost count. It was my go-to restaurant spot when I came home from college and became the primary restaurant that me and my grandfather went to (and argued over almond cookies if there was an odd number). Everything I eat there is good, but my go-to is Thai fried tofu rice (medium spicy), spring rolls (with tofu), edamame and occasionally a whiskey sour. I may branch out here and there when someone is with me (like trying the Veggie Medley Delight). I Just expect everything to be incredible always and fully understand why the parking lot is usually packed and there's a line. It's worth it.

The only reason I'm switching my review from five stars to four stars is because if you order online, the receipt claims they'll text you. They DO NOT. A family member waited for about 45 minutes. Finally, I mentioned to him that I usually go pick up the order as soon as I buy it online. He insisted that they will text. I shrugged and walked away. He called them. They said they would text when the meal was ready but "it wasn't ready yet." Before he could even put the phone on the charger, a text came through saying the meal was ready. Like I said, they do not keep up with texting when meals are ready. Just go wait in the lobby. Or call to check on your meal so you're not waiting a long time.

Fantastic hibachi experience. Our chef was incredibly good and was even able to work with a dairy allergy for us. Highly recommend if you're in the area - you won't regret it!

On Christmas Day, I called in to place a small order of 3 dishes. I called in at 1:24pm, I ordered orange shrimp, tofu green curry, and beef pad see eiw. The lady on the phone told me it will be ready in 30-45 minutes. I walked in at 2:10pm and the food wasn’t ready. I paid and waited there for 25 more minutes!!!! It was only 3 dishes, come on! Or make the workers tell the ACCURATE WAIT TIMES for pick up!! I understand it’s busy, but Don’t tell a lie pick up time of you are completely wrong or way off on the pick up time! Just add more minutes or say a much longer time instead. Please get your staff on board with it!! Merry Christmas

I have been a customer for (18 +) yrs. I'm sorry, but the flavor of the food has changed. The last 2 times we ordered, just one example, the Thai hot and sour shrimp soup was watery & w/o flavor, I'm hoping this will change. We'd hate to dine elsewhere.

Normally I would rate this place higher but we caught the buffet on the late side (which we were not intending on doing) & we were slightly disappointed, but we made due with what was left.

The egg drop soup was delicious along with the sushi roll

The food was great, and the restaurant had a nice atmosphere. However, the staff’s demeanor felt a bit cold, as if they might have had negative assumptions or past experiences influencing their interactions with Black patrons. Despite this, I still had an overall positive experience.

They advertised 8.55 price buffet all you can eat meals. But when we got there the price was 14.99 each plus tax. We showed them on my phone the 8.55 price. They said that was 20 years old. But they never took the advertising down. I felt let down. Staff was very rude. They put very small amounts of food on the buffet at a time. Waited 20 minutes just for chicken wings. Waiter asked for tips to be added to the bill. But she gave us no service. Most of the food was only Luke warm. Told them But they didn't do anything about the temperature of their food. They did not come around to check if we needed anything else at all. Total waste of money and time. Never going back again. And it was my birthday so sad.

Food could've been better. Ended up not being able to finish my meal because I felt sick after eating the noodles. Then while in the bathroom I see needles in the trash. Like seriously. Then I say I'm allergic to shrimp why did they cook them while touching the vegetables. Um duh. Smh

The food was delicious hot and cooked the way it should be. Tara was helpful and just the best spirit. She was very informative and just a great attitude.

My Recent Visit to Chi-Tung (October 28, 2024)

I went back to Chi-Tung recently, and I've actually been there twice since my last review. It seems like management must have spoken to the server I mentioned before because his attitude has noticeably improved.

However, during my visit last week, something else happened that left a bad taste. I was seated at the hibachi grill, and as we were all packing up our leftovers, one lady asked the cook for some garlic butter to go. The cook told her to ask the server, but she refused, saying, “No, he’ll charge me for it.” The cook, being nice, put a big scoop of garlic butter in her to-go tray anyway. Right after that, three other people started asking for garlic butter too. The cook laughed and said, “Y'all are gonna get me in trouble; there are cameras,” but he still gave it to them.

I joked and said, “Y’all better stop before you get this man in trouble—he just said there are cameras watching.” Out of nowhere, the cook spun around and snapped, “You shut up. I was talking to them.” I just looked at him and said, “Really, sir? Lemme guess—you’re upset that I reported your friend for his rude behavior last time, and this is your way of 'checking' me?”

The cook’s response felt personal, like he already had an attitude with me before we even exchanged words. I wouldn’t be surprised if that server I reported for rolling his eyes last time pointed me out to his coworkers. I’m not sure if Chi-Tung is a family-run restaurant, but it certainly feels like these folks will back each other up and act rudely toward customers without concern. Maybe it’s because they know a lot of people don’t take the time to report these things, or maybe they just don’t care. Either way, it’s disappointing.

While Chi-Tung’s food is consistently good, this type of customer service is something to keep in mind. With tips already included, they don’t seem to lose anything by treating customers poorly. It’s sad to see because it’s mostly people of color who come here, and they deserve better respect. Just something to consider if you’re planning to dine here!

The chef was a great presentation, but my food was too salty and my portions was not satisfying for what I ordered which was over 55.00! I have been coming here for over 12 years and this is the first time I was not satisfied with the meal and service! I still find this a great place, but for my 60th birthday, I was expecting more and I feel slated on that experience as I chose this place to celebrate my birthday! I think they owe me and my wife a real meal on the house! Still a great place, I just chose a bad night! Thank you for your service staff

Although overall this restaurant’s food was delicious and our server was AMAZING….the hostess was HORRIBLE. If we had not taken a Lyft there (we were visiting from VA) we would have turned around and left! Our server saved the experience!!!!

Food food was bland and I took the rest home. And when I ate it today, it had a hair in it.

My husband and I brought the kids here today, hoping to enjoy a nice lunch with the family. That is the complete opposite of what happened. We waited over 40 minutes with our name on the wait list all to order takeout due to frustration.

They brought back four different groups, with us still waiting over 40 minutes. One was a walk in five… plenty of open tables in the restaurant, however they weren’t sitting the larger groups, (5 and a height chair) because the two servers they had were to busy taking care of a 20 top. It’s complete bullshit, excuse my language. We spend over $200-300 every time we come here. This was a terrible experience and that server probably lost out on a good tip too. Get your communication in tact, and managers could have jumped in to ensure good service. Anywho, we’ll be steering clear of the dine in option here. If yall are hiring, I have 13 years experience in management and serving, and bartending… teach the servers to get their tables down and at least get waters in front of them. Had we been sat, and had some tea and water, we would have been fine.

We came back to this place after 7 years not being there. The food was very flavorful. It's very affordable. Our waitress TARA was a very positive, polite and nice. (We would love to see more people like Tara working at the restaurants!!!). We will definitely be returning soon.

I used to eat their buffet every week before Covid. I changed to order takeouts when the buffet was no more. I am so glad they reopen the buffet! My favorites jumbo chicken wings, crab rangoon, sushi, sesame balls, Singapore noodles were all back. They added some new items too. I tried some type of dumpling called Bow. It was so delicious. $14.99 all you can eat is real deal! Thank you Chi Tung!!

We did the take out Hibachi. Cost was $59.60. Each order received 2 yum yum sauce. Asked the cashier for 2 extra sauce, she said that will be $4.00, $2.00 each. My response was, I just spent $60.00, I’m not good for 2 extra sauce, she said $4.00. I told the wife F them and let’s go,. The lady said ok , you can have 1 extra but, I said no thanks and walked out. The lady eventually gave my wife 2 sauces. We dine in there about 2-3 times a year, and never had a problem getting the sauce to take home. With that being said, WU HOUSE here we come. I despise businesses that gauge the public!

I ordered from this place today and when I got home one of my items that I PAID for were missing. When I called to let them know, they offered to credit me the price of the item($2.99) on my next order. When I told them that was unacceptable they then said they would give me ($3.30) off my next order. In what world is this okay. #lostregularcustomer

Went for daughter birthday. She loves hibachi, hibachi was just ok. Ordered the lobster wasn’t really seasoned good. The steak was ok cooked tender same thing lacked flavor. Had a Mai Tai that they must’ve made with mixer or premade and it was horrible tasted like a well Long Island. Waiter was gone during the duration of the food experience. Maybe it was an off day. Not really sure. For our party size and over $300 with gratuity we could’ve had a better experience.

Although Chi Tung has been one of my favorite restaurants for years, I was very disappointed yesterday. My daughter, her father and myself visited there for our birthday celebration. We had our meal, and were ready for dessert when we were told we had to get up and have our dessert in a different room because other guests were waiting. I was so outdone I didn’t enjoy my dessert. We had just spent 160.00 in this restaurant, and were not able to complete our entire meal, who does that. Ever since they changed management it had not been the same. I will not be returning as much as I like the Hibachi, I have never heard of being asked to move to another table before I have completed my meal, that is very rude and bad customer service.

I ordered Thai Shrimp Fried Rice Sat about 8pm. It’s something I’ve been ordering from Chi Tung for years. Tonight 8-10-24 this order of shrimp fried rice Thai style extra spicy is the best shrimp fried rice I’ve ever eaten. It is so well made and spiced perfectly. Full of shrimp and fresh crispy vegetables and I ordered it extra 🔥 . It’s perfect and I wanted to compliment the chef and the staff of Chi Tung. My first thought after my first bite was “Chi Tung is back baby!” So glad I ordered it and it was worth the money. I can’t wait to check out your buffet one of these days. I understand you have started serving again. Thanks for a delicious Sat dinner and Sunday lunch. It’s perfect!

This was my 1st time there with my 90 year old mom and we both loved the food. Definitely we will be going back. My daughter loves coming here. I also received many comments from friends loving the food at Chi Tung.

Maureen, the person who answers the phone has absolutely horrible customer service. She’s nasty and rude and does not know what the hell is going on. I asked her if they still give the free appetizer for orders i er $25 and she was extremely- again rude and unaware. Get some one else to handle your order. I ordered my food but changed my mind, i’ll gladly go else where.

They have you waiting on the phone for 30 minutes. I asked for a simple order they have no idea. Beef chow fun

The food has changed. I ordered their Mongolian chicken and beef fried rice. The food had absolutely no flavor. I imagine no seasoning was used. It tasted healthy and cooked for geriatric purposes or for someone on a low sodium diet. It was not the worst thing in the world, but I miss the original flavor and ingredients that used to be used in the dish.

I was used to the carton of fried rice being filled to the brim, it was 3/4 filled.

Good food . It used to be better before. Very small portions keep it overprice.

I don’t know why, but for the last few months, the quality of the food has not been the same. It’s not horrible, but it’s not nearly as good as it was before. Certain food items tastes bland if they’re not ordered with “very spicy” seasoning. Even with that, it still may require seasonings of your own. I’ve been eating here for years. Something has definitely changed. I will say, the best chef they had was Chef Hua.

The food was excellent. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was good. I was celebrating my 65th birthday. My husband wanted to go to a mediocre steak house. I'm glad he realized it was me that we were celebrating!

Steer clear y’all, after decades of patronage, this place has changed for the worse. All my favorites are a sad bland version of themselves and half the size. Disappointing

Just brought some egg foo young it was terrible gravy the super thin the rice wasn't cooked right I will not be eating there anymore the food has really went down I will not be returning

Love delicious food they have hibachi grill there also regular seating and they have on there menu has three menu parts one is Chinese menu stuff etc. Then next is Thai stuff and the last Japanese etc. They didn't have the buffet I asked there not doing it again so they didn't bring it back yet or if they even will one day who knows . There's plenty of parking etc.

This is the best Chinese, Japanese, and Thai food restaurant on the south side!

A great place to eat , Asian food ! Nice portions, great service, nicely decorated and a great hibachi grill. It's been a favorite of mine for over 30 years.

Skip this place, not the Chitung of the past. Lived in Chicago for 27 years just came back. Awful experience. Food was greasy without flavor. The restaurant interior was not very clean. Staff were not attentive and frowning, like me picking up my order was an inconvenience. Vibes were totally off.

My dining experience at Chi Tung in Evergreen Park was centered around the hibachi side, and overall, it was a pleasant evening with some hits and misses.

The hibachi chef who entertained us during the meal was both entertaining and polite, adding a fun element to the dining experience. However, he tended to be heavy-handed with the soy sauce and garlic butter, which made some of the dishes a bit overwhelming to eat.

We opted for the shrimp and chicken combo, and while the food was decent, the flavors of soy and garlic were once again a bit overpowering. Despite this, the dishes were well-prepared and satisfying overall.

The service at Chi Tung was a standout aspect of the evening. Our server, Isabella, was attentive, accommodating, and provided helpful tips when she learned it was my first visit. Her suggestion to request lighter soy seasoning next time was appreciated and showed a level of care for the customer experience.

The atmosphere of the restaurant was comfortable and relaxing, setting the stage for a pleasant dining experience.

In conclusion, while there were some areas for improvement in terms of flavor balance, the overall experience at Chi Tung was positive. This used to be such an excellent restaurant however I went into the women’s bathroom today and the stall walls and floor were disgustingly dirty. I don’t mean it needed someone to come in and clean after someone had soiled it today, I mean it was clear the floors hadn’t been cleaned for an extended period of time. How does one realize to clean the toilets but not a single other thing in the bathroom of a restaurant?!

Not great carry-out. I expected better, especially since it was the day before a holiday. Vegetable fried rice should have had more than just 4 different vegetables in and they never even got my name right.

This was my first time ever where the cook wasn't friendly and didn't entertain the food was rushed he didn't season it and the rice was hard it was horrible This was my favorite spot I recommend to everyone but not anymore

The blonde waitress has the worse disposition ever. If yippee burned out and tired of service maybe consider a career move.

I have been coming here for over 10yrs and this was my last visit and was the worst. They burnt my whole family’s Habachi food on my birthday then management still wanted to charge us for 3 pops and 1/3 of one of the plates because my Dad ate a little. They did not care that we were not able to eat or our food was burnt or that it was my birthday. Horrible customer service and food. I have spent $1000’s over the years coming here and to be treated so bad is sad. They lost customers. Service is not the same as it was years ago. Definitely has gone down the drain.

The food portions have definitely changed. It appears your portions are smaller now than in the past.

This restaurant is to excellent.

The food was good, always plenty of leftovers. This was the first time dining in. We've ordered delivery from them for a number of years. The service was amazing. There were 15 of us after graduation. The staff was so great! Kept refilling our water, never had to ask twice for anything. Which was pretty amazing because a lot of other graduates came in with their families as well.

Had been having a craving for Shrimp Egg Young. I stopped in as I was running errands and $40 later (after I added other stuff to the order), I headed home. The food was okay. I've been going to Chi Tung's for probably about close to 20 years and while while I liked my food, I wasn't in love with it. It could have been a little bit more seasoned.
