Vegan food, including dumplings, noodles, rice, curry & burgers, made with seitan & soy-"meat".
Urban Vegan Thai Cuisine is a phenomenal vegan establishment. The staff are welcoming, friendly, and greet you with a smile. The Thai good is exquisite, fresh ingredients of excellent quality with a variety of plant base proteins to choose from. The portion sizes are decent and filling. Visited this restaurant twice now, and it has been an excellent experience overall each time. This is a highly recommended restaurant to try for vegetarian and vegan communities or any person wanting to try something different. Multiple visits now, and each experience has been wonderful.
Urban Vegan’s orange chicken is delicious! It was a staple takeout meal while I lived in Chicago. Better than any real orange chicken I had! The taste, texture, and portion size are all top notch. All at an affordable price.
The "chicken" itself is coated with a breading that's not overly crispy or soggy. Biting into the chicken has a perfect crunch leading into the savory chicken bit. I believe they use some form of seitan for the chicken itself. It's soft and has a similar mouthfeel to actual chicken. The chicken bits have a variety of sizes so you get large chunks mixed with smaller crispy bits.
The sauce is sweet and tangy. They put just the right amount on the chicken so that each nugget is well coated, but not drowning in sauce. The sauce's consistency helps it stick to the chicken. Usually they'll include two small orange slices which adds a fun aesthetic touch to the meal.
The chicken is paired with a serving of purple rice that provides a neutral flavor to balance out the chicken. The rice is cooked to be soft, but with enough structure to not be mushy.
If you can call it a downside, the portion size is too large. I would highly suggest saving half of the serving as leftovers. As a takeout meal, it would usually work as dinner plus tomorrow's lunch.
I moved from Chicago to Seattle 3 years ago and this was one of my favorite takeout dishes. I finally made it back to Urban Vegan for a visit and it held up well. Even though I'm not vegan, some days I wish I could teleport an order of the orange chicken to my dinner table.
Urban Vegan has been one of my favorites for years. Their fully vegan menu is of consistent quality and so delicious.
My faves are the "Crispy Chicken Nuggets" and the Green Curry Dinner Combo with "chicken". Those nuggets are my absolute fave vegan nuggets. Re: portion size, I generally make at least two to three meals out of one order.
I'll still be a regular, but I recently got the fries in a carryout order and they've changed them to an unseasoned fry - hope this was a one off since the fries were previously a highlight.
Delicious vegan food.
My favorite Thai place in the city! Also my favorite vegan restaurant. I love trying the appetizers. Pepper steak is my favorite protein.
My favorite restaurant!!

Come for the food: it's all good.
Favorites: orange chicken (but share it: it's overpoweringly sweet) and basically anything with their veggie pepper steak. Spicy noodles or the Thai basil, for example.
It's plain inside but you'll have fun.
I was not expecting how sweet everything was. It was inedible. I ordered the Tom Yum Soup and friend ordered spicy fried rice and could not understand why it was so sweet. If you are looking for traditional flavor profiles in these items, you aren’t gonna get it. Just not what I expected. I don’t know about you but I prefer sweet in my desserts not for a meal.
Sister restaurant of Vegan Plate with a similar (slightly broader) menu. A bit more bustle but the same delicious food and friendly service.
I don't know what culinary wizardry Urban Vegan is doing with their tofu "meats", but it really does seem magical to me. My battered tofu-shrimp not only tasted like shrimp but had the exact same texture as well, and that goes for the tofu-chicken I had for my main course, too. The interior is charming and cozy and there's plenty of seating. Great spot for a date night.
Excellent, flavorful Thai food. Highly recommend the papaya salad and the Grand Tempura!
I’ve been ordering takeout from Urban Vegan at least twice a month for the past year, and it never disappoints. The food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and satisfying every single time. The tofu orange chicken is probably the best way I’ve ever had tof.
Lots of love and fresh ingredients at Urban Vegan. The P.E.T. is the best to eat!!
I've been enjoying Urban Vegan for years and years and they never dissappoint. Even when traffic and car accidents make it late, it's still always worth the wait for real. Thank you!
Some of the best most authentic Thai food I've had also has vegan Thai iced tea and vegan crispy egg rolls. HIGHLY recommend. Very friendly.
Awesome food! We had the orange chicken and spicy noodles with pepper steak. It was perfect! 🤘
Quality vegan food with a lot of variety and options. Orange chicken is huge and good!

The best Thai food we've ever had, regardless of vegan, vegetarian, or carnivore style. And the price is very reasonable. It's become a must-visit whenever we're in Chicago.
Fast, friendly service and delicious food that will delight both vegans and non-vegans. I just wish I lived closer!
We ordered appetizer & spicy fried rice - everything tasted like desert! When we asked to remake the fried to live up to the name atleast, they made it level 10 spicy 🥵 we were having tears while tasting. We left everything & paid the bill & left. No courtesy of offering something in replacement at all.
Solid menu of vegan choices. Love the breaded mock chicken that was in the spring rolls, which were fresh and tasty though I was missing mint leaves. I had the spicy seafood soup and I loved the broth and mock shrimp though it was lean on fresh herbs. The fish parts were more like super narrow strand type things but they were tasty. My friends ordered the spicy fried rice and vegetable dishes and they each enjoyed them. For dessert, we shared a fried banana spring roll that was drizzled with chocolate and was recommended by our server who was not a big talker but she did her job. Overall, this is a reasonably priced lunch spot if you're in the area and hungry for veganized Thai food.

This place has so many vegan options and all the good was so good! The portions were amazing too!
Love this vegan restaurant! The food is so good! I especially love their Pad See Ewe with vegan "chicken", super yummy! Service is wonderful & fast. Atmosphere is good. It's BYOB so you can bring in your own favorite beverage :)
Small & not fancy but so cozy & perfect. My favorite cheap vegan spot on earth. So many options, all vegan, all delicious. Everything from comfort food to snacks to nourishing meals. I look forward to UV anytime I’m in the neighborhood.
Subpar thai food full of fake meat. Everything was just made with the same seitan and some onions. Honestly gross, might as well go to a Thai place and ask for no meat. Everyone I know who has gone here has said it sucks
Best Thai food I’ve ever had. No question about it. I hope we fit in one more meal here before we leave. And I’ll definitely be back on future trips
Amazing food with amazing people.
The restaurant is family-run and has great energy, with prompt and efficient service. The food quality is impressive, and the prices are reasonable. All the dishes we ordered, including chicken satay, chili fried dumplings, shrimp tempura, pepper steak fried rice, and red curry, were delicious. I recommend sitting in the booth behind the kitchen for the satisfying and soothing sound of the chef cooking with the wok.
I love Urban vegan especially for dining in! They give you huge portions for a great price and the food is so good. So far the spinach curry dumplings, orange chicken, and crispy tofu salad are my favorites but there’s so much more to try. I love it!
I like having a vegan thai resturant where I don't have to worry about meat or eggs accidently getting into my food.
I like the food, but it could be better. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu. I'll talking about the food I usually get. I often get the freshy spring rolls, but they definitely need something to take taste to next level: basil, lettuce, bean sprouts, and imitation meat isn't enough for flavour. Something else for more colour and flavour.
I'm a big fan of the P.E.T. Soy pepper steak is really good too. My only complaint and disatisfaction is that it's never spicy even when I ask for thai spicy.
Great food and service.
The best Pad see ew we've been able to find. Its definitely authentic and very vegan friendly. Flavourful and a great spot for Thai food whether you're vegan or not. Would recommend!
Great place
Hopefully it changed, this is not a recent review, but I had horrific food poisoning from there. I did not eat anything else that day, and am totally confident it was from there. I will never go back. Plus, the staff was very cold and unfriendly.
GREATEST THAI VEGAN food I have ever had! Love LOVE love the jungle noodles! Yum! Also tried few different things there. This time it was orange soy chicken with brown rice. So yummy! My friend got rice shell pasta curry, it was spicy for me but if you eat spice regularly you will be fine, it isn't bad at all. Absolutely worth a TRY! Absolutely recommend this for all Vegans and fellow Vegetarians!!!
I have passed urban vegan many times when I have been driving around. Have to say this small local restraunt is a hidden gem! Let me get into it!
The food here is beyond amazing. I order the freshy roll and they were very fresh and every bite made me want more. The orange chicken is the best orange chicken I have ever had any where. If I could have this dish every day I would. The pad Thai reminded me of when I had it while I was vacationing in Thailand! The service was all star level. The waitress that served me walked me around the menu and filled my water when she saw it was low. Hard to find places where waitresses are that attentive. The atmosphere or ambiance like I like to call it, perfect. The natural light from the outside and the decor and music that placed really was pleasant.
Overall, I will say give urban vegan a try. The experience will want to keep you coming back as the food and service speak for themself!
I recently tried Urban Vegan Thai Cuisine and was blown away by their delicious food. Their impossible chicken dish was absolutely amazing, I couldn't believe it wasn't real chicken. The flavors were outstanding and the service was top-notch. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for tasty vegan options in the area.
Thank you keep up the good work
Incredible food with kind staff. I could eat here every day of my life and never get bored, super diverse menu and everything I've tried has been delicious. INCREDIBLY generous portions, especially when you dine in. Pictured are the impossible basil stir fry, and the spicy fried rice with tofu.
Great food and service
Amazing restaurant to eat vegan food. This is what vegan food should be. Everything we tried was very tasty and the service was awesome! New lunch spot for my family ✨🫶🏽
The food is so good. I don't know how they developed such great flavors with no dead animals. A+
No meat
Amazing vegan place, food is absolutely delicious, tasty, natural and fast serving. The server and cooker were extremely nice and kind. Favorite new spot!
This place never fails to satisfy. They have a wide selection of dishes and they’re delicious!
Amazing place for vegan Thai food.
They serve plenty of food and to be honest it’s very affordable.
Good food…great menu options and amazing fast service. We ordered dumplings, spicy fried rice, basil stir fry and spring rolls. My only quam is that everything is on very sweet note- thai is generally spicy, tangy too in taste. Overall good place and plenty parking options available to park on street ( metered parking). Very friendly staff and superbfast service.
Amazing service and delicious food!! We were in a rush and the waitress graciously helped us get in and out quickly, while juggling the needs of the many other guests at the restaurant. The food was fantastic.
good food and friendly service!
The food is great, service is wonderful, had a great time here, couldn’t recommend it enough!
Everything was amazing. The soy chicken was on point. The orange chicken regained its crispy texture despite the sauce and the portions were very large. Large enough that we filled up a take out box and it didn’t look like we’d had a single bite of it. A lot of food for the price. Nice servers. Quick service and tasty food. Drinks at a cheaper price than most Chicago restaurants too. 10:10
Have been here many a times
Servers except one are very unfriendly and never a smile.
And this one waitress, in particular is very unfriendly and very discriminatory
If you are not Caucasian looking and even if you are there before anyone else she will heed and give attention to the Caucasian w a smile. Today was the limit
On a hot day without even asking she brings out 2 glasses of room temp water, and the other table who entered after us gets nice ice cold water
When we ask her to get us cold water she brings a glass of ice and leaves it on our table ..... literally just leaves it... And we are supposed to put that ice in glass full of water ourselves....
Not only that she doesn't even ask us if we are ready for our order just goes to the other table and gets their order and even served their drinks but didn't ask us and not that it was busy.... Just 2 tables and another waitress was just hanging out.
If u expect good service and you are any other ethnic decent forget it
great food! I was looking for Asian style food that i used to enjoy before i became vegan and this place had it all! Great portion sizes also. try the yellow curry!
I loved them, they were my go to, I was a customer for YEARS, until I started getting hair in my food with the orders. The past three consecutive times I’ve ordered I have had hair in my food. Before that it has only happened a few times and they were okay about it, they would only refund the dish that had the hair, never a full refund ( which I honestly think they should have done). The past two times out of the three I just didn’t even call them bc the 1st time out of the three consecutive they gave me a hard time about it. I have medium length curly hair and the hair that has been in my food has always been a long straight black hair. I’ve given up on them, I can’t deal with it anymore. And I can’t recommend that you eat here bc they do not take sanitation seriously or your food quality.
Really great vegan food!!! The spring rolls are the best anywhere. Panang curry was fantastic!! No matter if you are vegan or not, this is great Thai food!!
impossible basil fried rice, delicious!
This place is my favorite vegan restaurant in Chicago! The chicken nugget appetizer is my go to favorite everytime I visit and the app is super easy to use to order ahead.
I absolutely love the freshy rolls here. I came in from out of town and decided to grab some. They are literally half the size that they used to be and they upped the price. Seriously disappointing when it’s literally vegetables in rice paper.
The food was very tasty, and portion sizes are big! You definitely will have leftovers afterward. Many people were coming in and out for takeout. Service was decent and had plenty of seating. Would like to return to this place to try other dishes!
It doesn’t look like the pictures. Very small the food wasn’t bad the brown rice isn’t fried brown rice FYI. White rice was more like the regular Chinese fried rice. The place wasn’t so clean that was a big negative. It also made me and my son not want the food. It was little black things all around the bathroom floor. It really needs a cleaning. Also, street parking only not lot expect to park and walk.
Not friendly food is not good will never be back and definitely will not recommend
I really enjoyed the food and ambience in this restaurant! The vibes inside are chill— it’s spacious and nicely decorated, good for groups both large and small. Service is quick and the staff are very friendly.
The lunch and dinner combos are the same portion size, but dinner is $1 more. The portions are large, and the variety of spring rolls, salad, entree, and rice makes it worth it. I got the Praram’s Plate Combo with Soy Chicken. The soy chicken was good, but I think I generally prefer the texture of soy beef more. Still, it was very tender with a meat-like texture, and the peanut sauce was creamy and flavorful (the highlight of the dish, for sure). The spinach added fresh flavor and color. The purple rice was a little hard, but tasted good. The egg rolls were crispy and piping hot.
The prices are not low, but they’re pretty standard compared to similar vegan Thai restaurants in Chicago. The menu is also pretty similar to some of the other nearby vegan Thai restaurants, but the options are nonetheless diverse and expansive, and I’m looking forward to trying more items on the menu with different protein types too!

Loved the Chicken Nuggets.
Thai food good
Best vegan food ever 😋 TRUST ME YOU GOTTA TRY IT!
The food is absolutely delicious. Location is clean, very cozy, fast, friendly & polite service. Can't wait to return here.
Food is always fresh and tasty- never once did my family and I have a bad experience. We drive several miles to get here for an outing and never disappoints. I just wish we had more vegan cuisines like this nearby!
I got the "chicken" pad Thai and "chicken" red curry delivered and showed up HOT! Both are absolutely incredible and I will 100% be getting food from here again
Real cute little place, food is delicious, vegan, light, and filling.
This is one of the best all vegan restaurants in the city. Authentic Thai with great flavors and huge portion sizes. We ordered the spring rolls, dumplings, green curry with tofu and one of their noodles. Everything was very flavorful and tasty. Great quality for the money!
Its fine. The food tasted good but it didnt taste healthy. But i guess vegan doesnt equate to healthy. I had the curry. The place also had a weird smell that played on my appetite.
Love to get their soy chicken satay almost every time I go! Their soy meat is very tender and absorbs flavor well. I love their spicy noodles dish and their pad Thai! Their orange chicken is so crispy and sweet!
We had such a great meal here. Everything came out hot, fresh and fast. Highly recommend.
I got the spicy noodles dinner and my main dish felt off. Salad and spring rolls were fine. The actual noodle dish was a bit sweet and the noodles felt huge, soft and mushy. The plate felt like mostly noodles so I had to deep dive for veggies and protein--which was mushy too. I just couldn't eat the dish.
I was in the area so I wanted to try. For the price it was a bit disappointing.
Also, no silverware or napkins were provided with my takeout, you have to grab on your own.
Great place with a lot of character
One of the longest running vegan restaurants in Chicago. I am addicted to their pad Thai and tofu satay! I'm definitely a forever customer. They also have their own app for direct ordering. 💕
Solid Thai restaurant
Awesome food and it’s all vegan. I’ve ordered the pad thai with tofu, grilled veggie dumplings, cashew nuts with tofu, and sweet and sour dinner combo with chicken.
The combo came with a two spring rolls and a small side salad with dressing, the dressing was really good! I wasn’t a huge fan of the sweet and sour though. My favorite would definitely have to be the cashew nuts.
Pricing is decent for what you get! I typically get two meals out of my orders.
Delicious, friendly. Needs work on ambiance!
I am an ovo-lacto vegetarian, but this vegan place is my hands-down fave restaurant. Consistent and delicious. I moved from Chicago a few years ago, but I always stop by when I'm in town... and get extra items to eat for days. Love the curry dumplings, spicy noodles with pepper steak, and the curries. If you're ok with sweet, then the orange chicken is great too. I've never been disappointed with my meal, and I've been there more times than I can count.
Everything was delicious! We had the dumplings, green power salad, miso soup, and P.E.T!!!
Great food and great customer service
Love coming here with the hubby! I have tasted most of their dishes but my favorite is always the spicy tofu salad and their Beyond beef soup. So delicious! Can’t wait to come back again!
We’ve been coming here a bit and food is always DELICIOUS! I always order the spicy tofu salad as an appetizer it’s so good. Everything else is just great. You will have to check out their menu. It’s highly recommended.
Love it! My favorite Thai place! Meat substitutes are truly fantastic
My favorite spot, I’ve been there multiple times. The people are so lovely and sweet!
This sweet restaurant used to be one of my very favorite, go to vegan places. Years ago it was a small place (maybe 10 tables to eat in,) with the aroma of food wafting over from the open air/window kitchen. Always super fresh, amply sized portions, reasonably priced Thai dishes with the friendliest staff. But times have changed. Maybe they overextended themselves by expanding into a big space next door or maybe it's the after effects of the pandemic, but I'm sad to report this place is not what it used to be. Portions have gotten smaller while the prices have gone up. I mean, $12.00 for 4 smallish "Freshy Rolls." I would expect to be able to order 2 appetizers "to go" and spend less than $30.00. I should note that the dining in-person experience may be a bit better. This is solely based on several take-aways. And lastly, and completely unacceptable, the automatic, pre-set tip on a bill. In the spirit of gratuity, it should be up to the patron to decide the amount.
just perfect. The flavor is simple and classic but so authentic. I’ve tried their panang curry, yellow curry and the spicy noodles. Their thai iced tea is amazing as well. Their food makes me feel so warm inside. It’s so good that I had to write this review mid way though my meal! And the food is ready stupid fast.
Very tasty!
Got the green curry with soy chicken and it was phenomenal! I recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves Thai food. You won’t be disappointed!
Amazing service! Even better vegan food! Reasonably priced as well!
Definitely a plant-based highlight in Chicago. The spot doesn't look like much, but the food is some of the best Chicago has to offer without meat. The Tom kha is amazing and I recommend the orange chicken if you want sweet and crispy. Otherwise the basil impossible beef is an excellent but you really can't go wrong here. Plus, as always, the fries at this vegan establishment are top notch.
That teriyaki "fake" chicken is literally everything!! So good!
Amazing food
Great Staff
A really expansive menu with lots of choices. One of the dishes we got was really good, one was pretty meh. I was very impressed with the quality of their soy chicken and will be visiting again to see if maybe our bland dish was a fluke.
Extremely good vegan food.
Me and my partner have come here a couple of times. We always order the same thing, so this time my partner decided to try something new “prarams plate” to be completely honest, it wasn’t what we’re were expecting at all. The peanut sauce was too thick and tasted like straight up peanut butter. So, we kindly asked our server if we could please have it taken out of our bill since we weren’t going to eat it. We were planning to swap it out and pay the difference( if any) for a different dish. However, she informed us that we would still have to pay for the dish even though we didn’t eat it… We didn’t order anything else because it honestly ruined our entire experience. I think it’s ridiculous to have to pay for something that you couldn’t/ didn’t even eat. It’s really disappointing because we love to support vegan businesses but this was not it. I’m the end it just goes to show that they care more about making money than a costumers experience.
We ordered from here tonight and it was SO TASTY. The veggie puffs are so crispy and packed with goodness. I cannot believe the buttery crust is vegan. The spicy noodles and impossible basil were also so delicious. You gotta check this place out, even if you’re not vegan.
Love this place. Everything is good but especially the soy chicken and the tom kha soup is the best I’ve had. 10/10 would recommend and the service is great.
Having to eat a quick meal I was impressed with how attentive and quick the staff helped. The biggest problem I had was deciding on which dish to get as they many options on the menu. I went with the sweet and sour chicken which had a fresh taste, and it also did not weigh me down. The portion size was very big.
Great place for hot cooked vegan thai food
Very cute spot. Nice friendly staff and there were 3 other parties dining within the hour or so before closing. Saw a couple of people come in to pick up orders as well. I tried the yellow curry and it had sweet potatoes instead of regular - a nice change! There is a slight sweetness to the vegan chicken substitute which did not taste like anything I'd had before - possibly made in-house? My companion and I enjoyed it in our dishes and would like to try more of the meat sub options next time we're in the area!
The food is DELICIOUS. I have yet to have a bad dish. Their spring rolls are the best in Chicago.
Food is absolutely delicious
The thai vegan food so delicious
Delicious, but expensive
The food here is incredibly good. My friend and I shared 2 appetizers and 2 entrees planning to have leftovers to bring home. We couldn't decide which dish we liked best, everything was phenomenal. I can't wait a it to go back.
Best Vegan Thai Food ever tried. Fresh and impossible like real fish
Excellent place. The food was outstanding and the service was brilliant!!! Thank you so much. My newest find in Chicago. You gotta go. Its sooo worth the trip.
It’s so good! Iced coffee and orange chicken are favorites.
Wow - good find! The portions are generous, food delicious and flavorful. Try the tempura to share :-)
We've been here twice and so far we've had the pad Thai, sweet and sour "chicken" , orange "chicken", cashew nut "chicken", yellow curry, and Wonton soup.
Everything has been 10/10 delicious.
The food is fresh, hot, perfectly cooked, and perfectly seasoned with excellent flavor.
And, just as important, almost everything works as leftovers.
The only exception is the wonton soup. The dumplings fell apart within a couple hours, which makes sense on hindsight. Next time, we will eat it right away.
Even the orange "chicken" worked as leftovers! The next day, we heated them up again in our air fryer and they were crisp and yummy.
In the past, I haven't liked tofu. I've had it at a lot of places and it was never very good. Well, this place makes tofu that I actually like! I had it in my wonton soup and loved it. Whaaaat?!
We love that there are a variety of options for the vegan protein. So far the tofu, chicken, and steak options have been good. We haven't tried the vegan shrimp yet.
After just 2 trips, we agree that this is going to be our "go to" vegan Thai place.
I have known about this place for more than a year now and I’m glad I found it. The food is always good and the employees are nice. I always look forward to get food here when I get the chance. My favorite is the spicy bok choy and the taro pearls, My moms favorite is the pad Thai with soy chicken. ☺️
My wife tries to avoid meat whenever she can. She recommended this place that I’ve tried to not look at the past 352763273672 times I’ve driven passed it. I reluctantly agreed, assuming in my head I was going to be disappointed. I WAS WRONG. SO WRONG. The service was prompt and pleasant. The windows made the restaurant really bright, but still a cozy dining experience. I had the Thai Basil with soy Chicken protein (and fries because…. Well… they looked and smelled delicious). My wife got one of the curry plates with soy chicken as well. It was delicious. It’s sparked a curiosity in me. DEFINITELY coming back and recommend everyone looking into this place to come down and give it a shot.
