Casual, neighborhood BYOB spot serving Thai classics in a brick- & stone-lined room & on a patio.
Joy's isn't what I remember it to be, or maybe the issue is that it hasn't changed in all these years.
The food is just alright and prices okay for what you get but with so many other options in the area, that's just not enough anymore.
Also, the service could have been better. The staff forgot to give us plates and utensils, which happens, but getting their attention was very difficult and the restaurant wasn't even that crowded when we were there.
I think this is one of those places where if you've been going for years and live in the area you go just because of the nostalgia but for someone like myself that hasn't been back in probably a decade it just doesn't hold up.
Absolutely delicious, authentic Thai food with good vegetarian options. The food was all fresh, hot, and scrumptious. Get something with fresh basil! Their basil is fresh and elevates the dish. The Thai spring rolls were amazing as were the drunken noodles. Very good for takeout as well.
Decent place. You’re gonna get a good amount for a good price but that’s it. They supposedly sell Asian food but clearly have no idea how to make it. Just take a look at their pad Thai served with a lemon instead of a lime.
I’m not sure if they don’t know they’re meant to use a lime or they think we’re so stupid we won’t even notice.
The staff was nice.
The Panang curry with crunchy noodles was AMAZING! The curry was thick and creamy and it had great flavor. The mandalay noodles were also delicious. For apps we got the tom kha soup which tasted super authentic and flavorful, definitely recommend getting it with shrimp. The khanom jeeb we’re a tasty starter as well. The place was BYOB and had indoor and outdoor options with a back patio as well as front tables! ( no cork fee) Our server was such a kind sweetheart and staff was so friendly! We can’t wait to come back 😊
Large portions, many options.chicken was very tough. Great service.
I highlt recommend. Great noodles and wonton soup and appetizers and smoothies
Had been so many thai places. Never eat undercooked noodle and cabbage in pad thai.
The food is delicious and great price. It's BYOB without a corking fee, so bring a bottle of wine to enjoy with your delicious meal.
I've had many of the dishes off the menu, and these are my favorites so far: chicken satay, thai rolls, larb, pad thai, pad see eiw, pad woon sen, phuket noodles.
My new favorite Pad Thai.

I have tried most of the Thai places in and around Lakeview. Really wanted to like this one because it is close. On the plus side, the portions are huge and prices decent. The staff was really friendly. I am puzzled at reviews who complain about price/portion here. However, I agree with those who found it bland. The noodles could have used more seasoning and more stir frying. Chicken in pad thai did not have much flavor. All in all, not a deal breaker if I were in the mood for Thai and didn't feel like venturing out. However, what killed it for me was the atmosphere. It does not feel like a sit-down restaurant. The front is dominated by a long table with take out orders, and worst offender is the music. I don't understand restaurants that skimp on the 10-20 bucks a month for a spotify subscription. The radio station they were blaring was non-stop yaping and ads sprinkled with some over played pop songs here and there. The songs were so bad (imagine pop hits from the 90's that have been drilled into your head)... that I almost longed for the DJs to start blabbing again. Totally distracted from our dinner. A friendly tip to the managers.
Great n tasty food, service was fantastic. Definitely will go back.
Terrible. Just ordered a take-out, paid 130 dollars for Panang curries and ginger chicken - all the food is not edible. Avoid this place.
Missing items and unwilling to redeliver.
Overall the quality has gone downhill.
Sad to see. Used to be one of our favorites.
Pretty diverse menu and food is overall delicious. Crab rangoons, chicken satay, and spring rolls were tasty and can't go wrong with the drunken noodles or pad see ew. Would recommend.
My fav 💚
Great staple for delicious and accessible Thai. Plenty of space if dining in, and good packaging if ordering delivery. My favorites are the Panang Curry, with the fried wide noodles, and and the Pad Woo Sen with BBQ pork. I've tried most of the menu and haven't had anything bad, just maybe something I did not particularly care for with my tastes.
I’ve been going to Joys Noodles since 2011 and the prices have gone up so much and the quantity of food has gotten pretty low. I spent $56 today on potstickers and 2 rice/noodle dishes. The noodles taste so bland and have a weird after taste along with the chicken. It doesn’t taste seasoned, everything is so bland and just DRY. I drove an hour just to wait until you guys were open and I was soooo disappointed!
The music is always interesting at these kinds of restaurants. They servers were amazing though and served us promptly on a Sunday night with 14 people. They were all super kind and patient. The food was pretty good too. I got the chili noodle.
Amazing! Just amazing!
The best pad thai around, and lovely staff.
Crab Rangoon: very tasty, perfectly crispy on the edges and plenty of filling
Thai Iced Tea: good with a bad aftertaste, don't know what was wrong
Both entrees: really tasty noodles and sauce, chicken was dry
Delicious and quick.
Best pad Thai… ever
Food used to be great but now it is awful. Go to ping pong instead.
Solid food, nothing out of this world. Great service and very affordable prices
The first thing that I noticed about the Pad See Eiw was the vibrant colors. The noodles were a bright yellow, the broccoli was a deep green, and the egg was a golden brown. The second thing that I noticed was the aroma. The dish had a delicious, savory smell that was both sweet and slightly salty.
I took a bite of the Pad See Eiw and was immediately impressed by the flavor. The noodles were soft and chewy, the broccoli was crisp and tender, and the egg was perfectly cooked. The sweet soy sauce gave the dish a delicious, slightly sweet flavor.
Overall, I really enjoyed the Pad See Eiw. It was a flavorful and satisfying dish that was perfect for a main course or a side dish. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a delicious Thai dish.
Here are some pros and cons of the Pad See Eiw:
**Pros:**
* Flavorful
* Satisfying
* Vibrant colors
* Delicious aroma
**Cons:**
* Can be a bit oily
* Not as healthy as some other dishes
Overall, I think the Pad See Eiw is a great option for a Thai dish. It is flavorful, satisfying, and visually appealing. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a delicious and authentic Thai dish.
So fast and consistent, large portions, quality food.
Food was pretty good, good service
Flavor was not good. The food tasted cheap and premade like it was heated up in a microwave. The garlic sauce didn’t taste like garlic and was plain and watery. The broccoli was plain, no seasoning.
Food was so bad, tom yum tasted like vinegar and smelled strange. Noodles were over sweet. Don’t recommend
Diamond in the ruff. Chicago classic. I’ve been coming here for 8+ years and always enjoy it
best pad thai and basil beef hands down
Ordered delivery and the meal was delivered in shambles, the tea was old, and the taste and texture of the meals were disgusting! I'm never eating at this restaurant again. Joy's Noodles and Rice, is more like Sad Noodles and Rice. Yuck!
Favorite restaurant in Chicago! It is my go-to birthday dinner!
My regular order:
-vegetable rolls (the peanut sauce is outstanding)
-cucumber salad
-panang curry
-pad thai with tofu
It was a bad idea letting people know you live close by here
Nice outdoor seating and good service. The food was yummy and portions were generous. I would return!
Amazing pad see ew and panang noodles!
Chicken coconut curry! Nuff said.
Chicken Fried Rice was crunchy the chicken was not tender almost chewy. I hadn't eaten here in awhile and I feel I haven't missed out. There are 2 menus for the restaurant on line. 1 menu showed the price as $8.50. I was charged over $16. I saw a different menu with the price as $14.50. Wasn't worth the price.
Not the worst but not really good.
i come here with my mom all the time and i love it can think of anything better
Always a joy to eat at Joy's! One of our favorite places! We love Joy's!
Very tasty Thai cuisine. Best satay chicken I’ve had in a long time. Thank you.
Terrible food, not tasty,bad experience.
The Panang curry with crunchy noodles was AMAZING! The curry was thick and creamy and it had great flavor. The mandalay noodles were also delicious. Good Service, Food was OK.
Enjoyed the Pad Thai and Pad se eew. Fast service even with a full restaurant. Went on a hot day and AC.seemed to be out or barely keeping up.
Always tasty and large portions
their chicken coconut curry changed my life! it's become a special spot for my roommates and I :) we love joys so much ❤
Anyone with allergies beware.... I ordered a mixed vegetables and wrote I have a severe fish allergy and was vegetarian. I found both beef and chicken pieces in my food. When I spoke with the lady who answered the phone she sarcastically said "yeah sorry our restaurant isn't 100% vegetarian for you". How about more like yeah sorry you can kill people with severe allergies when you behave this recklessly. She did say she'd refund the amount. I would truly caution anyone who doesn't eat specific foods against eating here as they say they mix multiple foods in the steamer.
Not as good as it used to be :-(
The bubble tea was great, the chicken fried rice was not. I’m mainly making this review so that I don’t accidentally order from here again.
My go-to neighborhood place for comfort food and delivery. Always timely and consistent. My usual faves are Tom yum soup, shrimp Shumai, & pad Thai or pad see ew.
Very good food
Indifferent servers. Took so long to be greeted and seated, began to assume they were closed for a private party. Asked for napkins, had to get them ourselves. We were not the only patrons there who had to retrieve their own silverware, etc. Water was never refilled nor did our server check in after food was delivered. Were not short staffed nor exceptionally busy, the entire staff acted like we were an inconvenience. Food was not my favorite. Bubble tea was the best part. Will not go back.
Just ok. Not a ton of flavor

Best Thai food in Chicago. Loved it when we lived here... and it's still delicious when we visit.
Good food
My favorite Thai place!
Good food, a little pricey for Thai food.
Terrific green curry with rice.
Their noodles are soooo sour. Consistently sour
Got to their menu through Google maps. When I ordered it was $13. When I got there it was $20. Asked to see the manager and they said there wasn't one there.
Very tasty Thai restaurant in a fun part of the city. Delicious dumplings! Love the ginger sauce. Nice waiters. I'd go again.
Been coming here for years the food and service is consistently excellent. Such a great value. I recommend calling to order takeout vs using grub hub. Prices are cheaper that way and the restaurant makes more money. Win win.
I was excited to try this place because I love pad Thai and boba. When the pad thai was brought to the table it was the worst smell I’ve ever experienced. It smelt, i kid you not, like my dog after she just played in a muddy puddle. It smelt like B.O aswell. I couldn’t even try it i was so repulsed. I ordered the tarp boba thinking it’d be the traditional boba tea that I usually get with chewy boba balls and purple tarp milk tea. It was very overly sweet and it was not purple at all. It didn’t even taste like taro it was just a sugary milkshake. The boba balls were way too soft they weren’t chewy at all. It was like a gel at the bottom of the cup. Take my advice and save your money. I’ve never had such a bad experience with food.
Great food but server was just not attentive enough. There were no guest when we arrived
Terrible service . Had to track down server to order anything. Food decent but I didn't get quite what I ordered. Unfortunate because I had heard good things from a respected opinion.
Fast and delicious food. Love the back patio.
Good ambience and service, plus byob but food wasn't great. Its got a different menu that I liked but if the taste of the food ain't great then it's not got my thumbs up. I got the pad khee mao which didn't have enough sauce and it was sweet for some reason. The pang curry noodles was supposed to be fried noodles topped with curry, but the curry was at the bottom so it didn't soak the noodles and the tofu wasn't fully fried. And usually panang curry has veggies this didn't have any veggies. But the menu at this place is different so there's that.
However, the ambience was awesome!
This place has some of the best Thai in Chicago. It's been around a long time, over 20 years and still doesn't disappoint. The lard na is one of the best I've had anywhere.
First experience with Thai food and I really enjoyed it. Excellent service!
I thought it looked nice walking in but I had a pick up order the person at the front, he didn’t hand me the bag he passive aggressively tossed the bag I paused for 5 seconds looking down at the bag. He knew what he did because he turned and said “Im sorry is everything ok” as of he was concerned I don’t think he was in that much of a rush that he forgot his manners behind. I don’t think Ill save this into my list of restaurants to try.
I love this place! Everything is awesome! Great service!
Very nice & accommodating staff. Highly recommend.
I love the chicken satay
Used to be one of the best Thai places in Chicago. Unfortunately, they altered their recipe across all of their dishes during the COVID lockdown. Whereas they used to have mild and sweet dishes available, now every single dish is blanketed in chili. And if you try to request no chili, it will still be blanketed in chili. Their reasoning for this was “the sauces are all pre-made.” So there is no having something made to order.
It’s an incredible shame because Noodles in the Pot and Joy’s have been staples of fantastic Thai cuisine for the past couple of decades, but everything comes to an end, I suppose.
The food is still okay. But it’s far inferior to what it once was. So if you were having a hankering for this place because you’ve had it before — it’s no longer that place. If you’ve never eaten here? I guess it’s better than Panda Express.
This place has the best Pad Thai!!!
Amazing Thai food
Quick, friendly service with tasty food priced at an incredible value.
Have been a number of times and while I food to be inconsistent at times (the #8 Pad Khee Mao varies significantly in terms of spicy heat), it is always a good meal.
Especially pleasant when the front windows are open. Lots of good people watching.
Been coming here for almost 20 years. Food and service are consistently great. You never wait for a table and they keep your water glass full!
I picked up the order: for Phuket spinach noodles (curry) and chicken coconut (curry) Thai tea and mango bomba = $32
Each dish had about 2 serving sizes (so lunch the next day, so that great )
Phuket spinach noodles were great! If you like it spicy ask for extra chili paste packet
Coconut curry was light, sweet and savory and noodles were great
Thai tea is a classic and taste like most other places
Mango bubble tea was the best I have tried in the lakes view area. It’s a smoothie texture tasting like mango & vanilla. The boba in it is the soft kind
Over all great experience, price, portion and flavor ...will be back for sure
Surprised they are still open, the food has slipped dramatically. Chicken Pai Thai tasted like noodles and water, no flavor. Server could have cared less. I simply got up and walked out.
I’ve been going to this staple, firstly via its sister spot - Noodles in the Pot, since moving to Chicago in 1998. Such amazing food and such kind people!
Really great quality and a bang for your buck. The Thai iced coffee, pad see eiw, and curries are fantastic. Shoutout to the staff who are always super helpful.
Just ordered delivery Pad Thai and Panang Curry with crispy wide noodles. First time trying Joy’s. I’ve never had poorer quality Thai. Pad Thai was overly sweet and had an off flavor, and we could not discern what the crispy noodles were meant to be - they were like stale, fried cardboard strips. A noodle spot that cannot deliver a quality reference dish like Pad Thai should just go away. Total disappointment.
Possibly the best Pad Thai I’ve had in Chicago! They have lots of noodle dishes to try, their takeout is fast, and their servers are very friendly and accommodating.
Best Thai on the north side of Chicago.
The food is amazing and the patio is great. Employees are really nice and considerate. 20/10
Good Thai food. Try their Penang, it’s really addictive
Great food good portion size attentive service😀
I have tried Pad Thai at many restaurants, some good, some bad...none of them can compare to Joy's. If you are looking for the best Pad Thai in Chicago, you've found it. At a great price too.
Great noddles at a great price.
This place is very nice. They have two outside areas to sit, front and back. The sitting area in back is actually bigger and quieter. The service is friendly and fast. Food was excellent. Would definitely visit again and I do recommend this restaurant.
Service and food was fast!
Joys Noodles has been going downhill year after year. The quality is getting worse and the quantity is getting smaller. A place that was an amazing spot is now mediocre. Today I just placed an order. It was mediocre. It wasn’t even hot. To top it off, I asked for chili packets and they refuse to put any in. This isn’t the first time this has happened. I’m super upset in Joys. If you want mediocre Thai food, go here. If you want good Thai food with GREAT customer service, go to Cozy Noodle.
Great food and great prices...always good...and this is BYOB restaurant
Unprofessional workers
The food was as delicious as usual.
My favorite thai place in East Lakeview. Always fast, friendly, and you can try anything on the menu for something amazing.
Always great food and friendly staff!
Joys noodles is fantastic! My boyfriend and I got the shrimp fried rice and chicken curry! The price and the quality is on point! 👍
We ordered 3 dishes online, only one was right! (the Tom kha) the others were wrong. the swap the beef with tofu without telling and the green curry wasn’t green. We endup throwing most of it away
Was total waste of money and disappointing.
Hands down this is the best Thai place in the Chicago greater area.My girlfriend and I will find numerous locations to come back and we'll order the same exact thing every single damn time. We love you Joy's noodles ♥️
The food is really good. I enjoyed the Beef Lard Nar. The Pad See Ew is good too. Their Thai Ice Tea is perfect. It's a nice, cozy atmosphere.
The food has always been good over the years, but the prices, probably due to rents etc in Lakeview, are really high for Thai food. The service is the main problem here...attitude or total indifference at best! Wasn't always like that...
One Sauce To Rule Them All
Great Asia cuisine at low prices. Highly recommend.
Great service and friendly staff. Food was only just ok.
The food is excellent, service could be a bit better. Nice servers but without much experience (yet).
Food is great Service is great Atmosphere is great It is Byob If you shop at Jewel at Addison you receive $10 off coupons So Joys is a great value Winner all around
