Serving fresh Thai food since 2006. Ratana's first opened at the Hilo Farmer's Market before moving around the corner to 211 Kilauea Avenue. Ratana creates Thai food the way she enjoys it- delicious, fresh, and authentic.

We offer healthy and fresh salads, soups, curries, noodles, and more. We hope you find something on our menu that you enjoy. Stop by or give us a call today!
Best pad thai I’ve ever had. I love tofu in my pad thai. I also like my pad thai and food spicy, I’m not sure if it’s because how I look or because they don’t normally do spicy for pad thai but it wasn’t spicy even though I had said I wanted it “more spicy” lol. That was the only disappointment and unfortunately lots of places hold back the spice for me because they probably assume I can’t handle it but I wouldn’t ask for spicy if I didn’t want it. Still was delicious!!!! Thank you!
This restaurant was so good that I decided to start writing Google Reviews - the world needs to know how great this place is. We stayed in Hilo for 5 days and ate here twice. Every single thing we ate was excellent. Our most well-traveled group member decreed this as the best Thai food he’s ever had in America. The curry was spectacular - especially the green curry, the masaman curry, and the red pineapple curry. We also enjoyed the pad Thai, coconut soup, green papaya salad, spring rolls, Thai tea, and mango sticky rice. You really can’t go wrong!
Ohi and Lotus were so kind; they even gave us recommendations for local activities as we were waiting for our food. It sounds like they grow most of their vegetables or buy them at local farmer’s markets. Everything tasted so fresh! If you like Thai food, you will love this place.
Fantastic spot. Staff and owners made us feel like family. We ordered Thai iced tea, mango sticky rice, pad thai, red curry with pumpkin and even asked them to cook us the same spicy pork soup they were eating, which was not on the menu. They oblidged my obnoxious request. It was incredible and if I lived close, I would go there once a week and request the secret off-the-menu item.
There are a couple of tables for seating, but it looks like most of their business is structured for quick pick up. Prices were very reasonable and food was piping hot.
Owner even brought out some dessert for us to try that was straight from Thailand. She told us about how important sourcing local ingredients is for her cooking and that they have a booth at the Waimea Saturday farmers market. Nice to see family restaurants on island thriving!
FANTASTIC little hole in the wall for takeout. Papaya salad and pad thai were out of this world. I thought we had some pretty good Thai restaurants at home (seattle area) but Ratana's is right up there, and a great value. Must visit.
The Thai here is one of a kind amazing! Came here and they were so friendly and all of the food is homemade! Best Thai I’ve had in a long time!
I love, love, love how Ratana's is a super small hole in the wall place that cranks out super fresh, super hot foods.
We had a party of 7 asks we took up half of the restaurant. Needless to say the inside is small, but the dishes are BIG! Let me preface by saying that pretty much all dishes are accompanied by rice (mixed white and some other type I'm not familiar with).
We ended up ordering shrimp Panang curry ($11). While it was a creamy, flavorful dish, I think it could've used a bit more coconut and peanut butter in the curry itself. Either that or the Panang Curry was diluted by the rice bowl it was mixed in with. Or maybe it was style of Thai cooking I'm not used to. We also decided on chicken Pad Se Ew ($10). However instead of wide rice noodles, Pad Thai style noodles and was more like pad Thai. Our last entree was a spicy shrimp (are huge) papaya salad ($10). This dish was by far the best item here for me. It has all the properties of what a papaya should have. The spicy, salty, slightly sweet, limey acid added to the home grown fresh, crunchy papaya was excellent. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MENU ITEM.
What I was really excited to try was sticky mango rice dessert, but by the time we finished the food we were beyond stuffed.
I really like this place. The value is incredible, and I absolutely recommend Ratana's. I just wish some of the entree flavors were a bit bolder.
Another quick review!
Gluten free and vegetarian options!
Very good food! Best Thai noodles I've ever tasted!
The texture is perfect! I think the flavors mix very well and the cooks know what they're doing.
Everything was spectacular! But.... One- actually 2 things I ought to mention;
The avocado summer roll thing- actually good, but I feel as if the sauce was really sweet. The outside wrap was interesting, and my favorite part actually.
Service- (this part is quite long, but to sum it up, no bueno)
too bad I couldn't pick up the flavors very well because this older lady at the front counter was very disrespectful, I usually don't leave reviews like this but it made me very uncomfortable.
As a tourist I was very dissatisfied with the treatment the counter person had with a particular customer. A young mother with her young child came in, she was kicked out due to her child being "disruptive." Me and my family were the only other four people in the room, and confirmed that in fact, the cute little guy, was not disruptive...
Boom!
Kicked out anyways!
Disgusting! revolting! He's just a child!
This behavior is unacceptable and childish. Me and my family do not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
The whole time I was just at "aloh- huh???"
This really brought the rating down, I hope that they treat upcoming customers with the utmost kindness.
Thank you, and have a lovely evening!
We got the green papaya salad with peanut and shrimps, extremely fresh and delicious
Thank you!
Amazing food ! They’re so nice and they have tofu as a protein substitute for vegetarians!
Don’t miss out on the pumpkin red curry !
The Thai here is one of a kind amazing! Came here and they were so friendly and all of the food is homemade! Best Thai I’ve had in a long time!
FANTASTIC little hole in the wall for takeout. Papaya salad and pad thai were out of this world. I thought we had some pretty good Thai restaurants at home (seattle area) but Ratana's is right up there, and a great value. Must visit.
Very low level. Nothing like the food in Thailand.
Gyaaattttt
FANTASTIC
The pad Thai is SO GOOD! I’ve also had the papaya salad and Thai tea, I’ve never left dissatisfied or disappointed! Highly recommend
Excellent food! The papaya is delicious!
lady is rude and the restaurant is small. the papaya salad is good tho so order take out and beware :)
My husband and I stopped in last week while we were doing our laundry and got the chicken skewers with salad and the massaman curry.
It was all amazing!!! It was fresh, filling, the curry was out of this world. Good portions we shared and had some left over. We will definitely be back
These papaya salads are outstanding! The best that my friend and I have ever had! They use amazing family recipes for a unique flavor! I wish I had this close to home because I would eat one everyday!!!
Amazing soups!!
Some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had. We ate Panang Curry and Pad See Ew; both were so fresh. Big portions too!
Said they close at 7pm, drove all the way here, parked, walked in the rain, and they were closed just afrer 6pm. What a shame!
Excellent, excellent aromatic curry with wonderfully textured red rice. My new favorite place ❤️
Highly recommend #3 - mixed papaya salad with peanuts. Excellent sauce! It has cucumbers, avocado, tomatoes and papaya. So delicious. The summer rolls with tofu and avocado were also very good, especially with alfalfa and lettuce. Owner is friendly and service was fast. We will definitely come back!
Excellent food! The Green papaya salad with avocado was delicious.
I moved away from the big island 5 years ago and I still think about her food.
Fantastic and fresh food. Very friendly customer service as well. Can't wait to try other dishes here. I had the #4 AWESOME!!!!
Huge portions

Best papaya salad outside of Thailand.

I’m not sure what the bad reviews are about. The owner is a wonderful person inside and out. The food is oh so fresh!! The atmosphere is amazing.
Papaya salad is awesome, and any pads thai
I had to get seconds while in Hilo
Food was absolutely delicious. We came in with 8 ppl...place was small but owners were very accommodating. I love Mom and Pop run restaurants, the love in the food is obvious. Good luck on your marriage!!
The green and red curry are amazing at this place!
Very very clean homemade food, portion are Gigantic, and the taste is a masterpiece , i highly recommend it , the green papaya salad and the red pineaple curry were my fav ❤️
The green papaya salad was a Master piece ❤️
Great food but the front desk lady needs anger management classes!!!
She has the get out of this place attitude!!! You leave feeling horrible…. She has an issue with every little thing… Just take out and eat in your car….Or avoid.
The food was fresh , delicious and amazing! After our meal the owner of the restaurant insisted on cutting up our white pineapple we bought at the farmers market, so we could eat it at the beach. They went the extra yard. Eat here ! It’s a take out place but there are a couple tables.
The best Thai food over ever had. The green papaya salad is life changing, the summer rolls are the size of your head and the green curry is amazing. Can’t go wrong.
We had pad thai noodles and it was a gem! Highly recommended! Host was super nice.
Great family owned gem, serving heapinp portions of delicious Thai food. The homemade garlic chili oil adds an amazing layer of flavor.
Mahalo!
Great Thai food and amazingly friendly staff and owner!
Amazing place! We got the green papaya salad and asked for tofu on top which they kindly added and also had the tom yum which was soooo delicious 🥹. Honestly healing. The restaurant was recently bought by a couple in December of 2022 (I unfortunately didn’t ask their names) and the woman has been cooking her whole life and for various local places around Hilo.
Seriously spectacular spot and I’m so happy we found them! They’re not always open at 10 since they’re busy folks, but if you get the chance to stop in and give it a try, definitely recommend 🌈.
Fantastic food... I'm a big fan of the papaya salad
Had great experience for vegetarian dishes they served. Pad Thai was our favorite with correct spice level and flavors were so delicious! Papaya salad was very fresh and refreshing! Summer rolls were great! I would definitely recommend this place.
The owners of the restaurant were exceptionally kind. They treated us like family and even offered us more than we asked for.
The food was extremely high quality. Farm to table. Home cooked and delicious. When I come back to Hilo, I'm coming back here.
Grand Slam:
great food
superb service
nice portions
wonderful new owners
Absolutely delicious, super friendly, and the portions are big so we did not go hungry ordering the red curry and chicken fried rice. Ratana's is a small place with great food!
Very good service and awesome salads. I am not salad fan but this place very good options.
They also have Jain options
Wonderful tasty food! They catered a work lunch for me and everyone was so pleased to have such a nice variety and plenty of options for multiple dietary restrictions. Was a great value and order was prepared on time.
Look delicious!
My husband had the Green Papaya Salad with Grilled Chicken, and I had the Pad Thai. Both were excellent. They seem to be primarily take-out, but there was one table outside where we were able to watch the city go by. The staff were busy, but very friendly.
Absolute best Papaya Salad and Curry. I go back regularly. Love this place!
I had a very bad experience today with the older lady taking orders. I think she is the owner and was extremely rude to me. I had my 3 year old with me who you know is only 3 years old! He looked around played with the napkin holder that was empty anyway, looked at those paper boxes by the wall they use for to go but he kept them in place and just being a normal 3 years old kid.
She didn’t like it and started yelling at me at one point she said something vulgar to me too. She said we can’t even come back anymore. I asked a family who was sitting there if my son is really that bad and they were sorry and said he was completely fine. I started crying because this made me sad being treated poorly like that.
I left in tears and felling down because she didn’t have a good day or i really don’t know what happened to her. I live in hilo and I went there with my son like 2x/month to get him noodles.
I actually don’t like their noodles that much but he did plus they are cheap. That’s why I went there.
This was first time it happened to me but there was usually different lady taking orders before.
Anyway, I ended up paying for being treated this poorly because my son would start crying if we would leave without it but I left in tears.
Now, I will start gladly paying a little more somewhere else where we will be treated kindly and with Aloha.
Very quick service. Simple place. I had summer rolls. They were delicious. Good value for money. Lot of vegetarian options
Another quick review!
Gluten free and vegetarian options!
Very good food! Best Thai noodles I've ever tasted!

Thank you, and have a lovely evening!
Great food, but not kid friendly. Rude to another customer who had a small child- the store owner kicked her out because her kiddo was a busy body- he was around 2. Sad.
Absolutely amazing experience! The ladies who work there are so kind, spunky and playful. My family and I went there yesterday because we saw all the great reviews and our expectations were 1000% exceeded. The food was fresh, smelled amazing and tasted even better. If you’re looking for authentic Thai food in Hilo, try this place out for sure!
Really amazing food and huge portions for the price.
Gigantic portions! Pad see ew was different from what I’m used to (thinner noodles) but very tasty. Didn’t have egg so I think it was vegan?? Green curry was surprisingly flavorful and tofu was excellent. Papaya salad was also very good and fresh. The avocado I got with it was soooo creamy!!!
Such good food I always come back . Also they are so sweet and nice. Makes me want too come back even more ...
Delicious!
Green Papaya Salad is *chef's kiss*!
Very good portions and tasty! Got the chicken + papaya salad, pad see ew, pad Thai, and curry. There was so much papaya salad but I am not complaining! Would recommend as a quick and good quality lunch!
Great Thai food - the spice level was perfect! Big portions and great prices.
Some of the best Thai food you can get and great prices! Their pumpkin red curry is so good!
Authentic Thai food at affordable prices! With no less than 10 other Thai restaurants in Downtown Hilo, you can’t go wrong with the great food and fast service of this very clean Ronahan Thai! Kob khun krup! Thank you, Ratana!
Must have mango sweet rice!
Very delicious! Excellent food for an excellent price! Vegetables were fresh tasting, chicken was cooked perfectly, spice level was exactly what I wanted, highly recommend
I was very disappointed going here for some papaya salad . They have really Americanized it here . No fish sauce or other original spices that you would have in a real Thai papaya salad at all . Never coming back . If you are hmong , and know how real papaya salad taste like , DO NOT GO HERE ! I WISH I CAN GET MY 12$$ BACK !!!
Excellent food. Person taking order was superb. Good quantity and phenomenal quality. We tried multiple dishes (vegetarian) with tofu. All of them were good.
Best and fresh thai cuisine I have ever had
Cost reasonable excellent quality fresh Thai food take out!
These ladies have the best papaya salad that I've ever had. I've tried the shrimp and the chicken, and they're both awesome. Oh and the curry is great too. Just get anything and you won't be disappointed. 😁
Wonderful as always. Really wonderful and freshly made papaya and cucumber combo salad, a chicken satay stick, and an especially wonderful order of sticky rice with mango for dessert!
The food here was terrible 😞. Got green papaya salad and summer rolls. All very bland. No noodles in summer rolls.
I have been coming to Hawaii for the majority of my childhood and young adulthood. Recently, I came into Ratana's Green Papaya Salad and asked a nice woman behind the counter if she knew the identify of the person who made the papaya salad at the Muku'u Farmer's Market for several years. To my surprise, it was Ratana! Hers is the most fresh, bountiful papaya salad. You won't be disappointed!
Great service and food good vegetarian options
Well made, fresh and affordable. İ took my friends and they ordered a couple of extra dishes. İ really enjoy the curries.
Awesome food and amazing price. The Massaman Curry is the best and most authentic curry I’ve ever had outsides of Thailand. Pity that they didn’t serve mango sticky rice today.
I can finally stop searching for Thai food on the Big Island. I found my spot and this is it! Wow, great food, great service, great prices.
Great Food…small portions though.
Food quality was not great. Papaya salad had big chunks and not cut into pieces of salad that can be eaten.
Excellent. Good selection of tasty salads. Good customer service. A hidden gem.
Excellent Thai food. Seriously.
Such nice people working there and delicious food! We got the red curry with chicken and avocado... WOW! Went with medium heat although could've been a bit spicier for my tastes.
They also sell various plants on their rack outside for really good prices.
Check em out 🤙🏽
I love this clean and delicious little restaurant!
Great food. Vegan and Vegetarian options. Large portions. I wasn't in Hilo long, but made sure to come back for more Green Papaya Salad.
Super refreshing and authentic Thai food! I would give it 6 star if it is possible.
We tried this place today, it was so good. My husband is picky and he even loved it. We tried the green papaya salad, green pumpkin curry, chicken satay. Everything was fresh and we will be back!!
Awesome togo packaging, reasonable price. Mango sticky rice good thumbs-up
Everything tasted super fresh, and prices were reasonable. Hidden little gem here in Hilo
Awesome papaya salad and portions was generous and ono. Owner was the best.
WOW, the prices are great, especially for the quantity and the quality of food here. I think that there are great thai food places where I live, but I enjoyed the foo here so much while I was on vacation. The pad thai was rich was flavor and had a lot of filling, and wasn't too saucy and sweet (which I don't like). The shrimp summer rolls were PACKED (no wimpy, small rolls) and they came with both a peanut sauce and sweet chili sauce. We then finished it off with one of the best mango sticky rice desserts I have ever ordered. It was all perfection. I would love to visit again if given the chance to. Mahalo for the memorable meal, which we ate at Rainbow Falls.
Great Thai.
Fresh and fast. So good!
Got the soup and it was yummy 😋.
One word...Delicious @
One of the best tasting papaya salad
Every trip to Hilo, we stop by several times at Ratana's for takeout food. It's a great healthy choice and all the dishes are delicious. The standout is the Mango Sticky rice! I just wish I had a place like this in California where I live.
Healthy, spicy, and so ono. Plenty aloha. 🙏
Maybe it was a bad day or something, but I got a plain green papaya salad and it was clearly not very fresh (oxidized, wilted, not smelling great). However I was starving and had some anyways, imagining it was day old salad I pulled from my fridge. But then I found a hair inside the takeout container too. Too bad, hopefully it was just unlucky.
Lovely place and such friendly staff, really makes the experience great. Thank you for being open during these hard times!
Delicious!!
Great Thai joint!
Good
Best Thai food in Hilo!!! I highly recommend. Couldn’t get enough of their Massuman curry. Friendly staff! They recognize you when you come in! Excellent deal, large portions and low prices.
Incredible coconut soup and Thai food
Yummy food made quickly for a Reasonable price. Not much seating so take it to go!
Great food, fast service and reasonable prices!
Loved the green papaya salad!!
Great food. Reasonable prices. Fresh, fresh food..
Tiny little place, huge flavor
Fantastic food. Best green papaya salad I have ever had!!
We shared the green curry mango - it was delicious and reasonably priced! We paid 5 times the amount at a recommended Japanese place our last night in Hilo and regretted not just coming back here.
Ratana crafts delicious and very affordable Thai food. Go there right now and treat yourself.
Very good food highly recommend
The red pineapple curry was very good. I think I will be back.
I had the mushu salad and it was fantastic.
Best food in town! Super friendly ladies that run the kitchen as well!
Best Thai I've had in Hilo. Fresh and healthy tasting locally sourced ingredients. Everything prepared perfectly. You can taste the love these Aunties put in every bite. Very limited seating so plan to take out for larger parties or if your coming in at busy times. Anything off the menu is a home run.
Delicious yellow curry with pumpkin and shrimp and perfectly cooked brown jasmine rice. House made entrees are ready to serve pretty quickly and take out was ready in about 5 minutes . The dining cafe is small and simple, but the menu is quite good and very reasonably priced. Coconut water is available and house made macaroons, hand dipped in dark chocolate made for a yummy, nutritious comfort meal.
Excellent food!
I eat here about once a week. It is in walking distance to my office. The quantity for the price is awesome. The food tastes great. I usually get the papaya salad with nuts and avocado. I have also tried their curry which was good.
I forget eating here
I love, love, love how Ratana's is a super small hole in the wall place that cranks out super fresh, super hot foods.

Great food and very affordable price
Only good things come from this place, love the Thai tea.
Very healthy tasty food
Extremely friendly and very good and fresh food! Definitely again!
I go here everytime I want a good deal on amazing Thai food. This is the best food in town in my opinion. And always made quickly. They always have great service and I will keep coming back forever. I am 9 months pregnant and wouldn't suggest a better place for fresh food
Extremely good papaya cucumber salad. Medium spiciness is actually kinda spicy and I love that! The summer rolls with peanut sauce were delectable, and the pineapple curry with shrimp was to die for! Very cute service, big portions, and the food is delicious. 10 stars.
Best Green Papaya Salad ever! Lilikoi drink is delicious!
Wow!!
We are from Toronto, Canada and have good Thai places there.
This place is AMAZING.
Not much for seating area, but TOTALLY makes up for the quality of food.
We ate Shrimp Pad Thai and my wife had Pad Thai with Tofu. She said it was done perfectly!!!
Would highly recommended.
A small. Local. Off the main road great place!!!
Accidently walked into this restaurant while looking for another Thai place. It is a small place but unexpectedly yummy food. The owner also made great efforts to accommodate our large family group (12) and timely served the food.
Great flavors, portions and prices.
Great food! So fresh and healthy. Good portions.
Food is very fresh, good portions, healthy and kind service. Yeah!
I eat there at least once a week. The food is consistent, fresh and cooked to order. Pleasant atmosphere and clean.
Very good food at a very good price! I had the chicken pad Thai and they use chicken breast but it is not dry! And a good amount of vegetables and flavor!
We had noodles to go and ate it in the park under a shady tree. Best lunch in Hawaii!! Very (and I mean very) reasonable prices. Loved the pad see u.
