Experience authentic Thai cuisine in the heart of Dupont Circle, D.C. at our restaurant, where we serve visually stunning dishes that tantalize the taste buds.
Dec 2024,
The food was excellent and packed with flavor. I particularly enjoyed the Thai iced tea. The dishes came out fresh, hot, and quickly, which was a pleasant surprise. The crab fried rice was my favorite; it had real crab and generous portions for the price. I would highly recommend this place! Fried tofu and dipping sauce was my next favorite.
Beautiful decors and nice seating area, especially by the front windows.
Several street food items that made the menu stand out compared to other Thai joints. Almost had a hard time deciding what to order.
Stewed pork leg was tender, though I think they could use more star anise and cinnamon in the stew. The meat and broth tasted a bit bland because of that.
Jungle curry was definitely bland, tasted watered down. Perhaps because we didn't specify the heat level?
Server was attentive and checked on us frequently. Interested to try other dish next time.
This place is perfect, it truly deserves 6 stars, super chilled energy inside with fun colorful decor, the staff are very friendly, kind and helpful. The food wow the food is alllll tasty spicy and delicious. I got the eggplant basil with shrimp and it was on point in every way the photo speaks for itself. I literally ate the rainbow! My buddy got drunken noodle also very tasty. Next time I’m in DC I will return! Bravo!!
The staff was incredibly lovely and accommodating. They were responsive and effectively handled allergy situations. A special shout-out to Chali!
Did a pick up order. Food was ready very quickly (within 10 min). Pad see ew was flavorless though.
New go to Thai. Panang curry is so god
i feel deeply grateful for this restaurant. i come here when i feel homesick and i’m not even thai. as something of a regular, they treat me with such warmth that i sometimes get a bit emotional being here. don’t know what took me this long to rate them.
Went here with friends and was not disappointed by the good, vibes, or prices. Would recommend others to visit!
I love Thai food, and this place serves next level. The food is scrumptious and delicious. Very high standard. Great atmosphere, and very friendly and good service. Highly recommended.
Very festive, excellent food with generous portions, and prices are reasonable.
Best Green Curry in DC so far
Amazing!!
Très bon restaurant thaï. J’ai adoré la soupe aux crevettes ! Produit super frais.Et le service est attentionné : beaucoup de gentillesse 🫶

Authentic Thai dishes! Loved the pad Thai and the mango sticky rice!
The atmosphere and food were fine but the service is really bad. The server we got was demanding for a tip which we felt little weird and rude.
Definitely one of the best green curries i have ever had!
Great food and service
I'd visited Thailand before. This place food flavors were authentic. The owner should be proud as this restaurant totally stands out in DC. However, had they not cheated/tricked me, I would have given them all 5 stars! They charged me 20% gratuity fee for over 5 customers while we were dining in with 3 adults and 1 toddler 🤷. Fortunately, I had to split the bill, thus my friend noticed that. Otherwise they would have received another tip from me 😡 Just fyi, my friend told me not to void the bill for a new payment. But that's some dirty work a restaurant dare to do in the capital. Be careful
Tasty!
Got my credit card cloned for a poor quality overpriced meal
The Koi Soi took me right back to the Friday night market in Chiang Mai. Authentic Thai cuisine and the service staff was out of this world friendly! The decor was soothing, and the cocktails were perfection. Couldn’t find anything negative to say if I tried.
Food was fast and taste was good. I was very happy.
If you want delicious Thai food come here! From the appetizers to our dinner. Everything was AMAZING! They also have kid plates which was a plus! The service was also great! This will be our new go to Thai spot for when we’re in DC!
Every time I go to Sampannee Thai. I have a great experience. The food is great, their vegan choice is superb, and the staff is outstanding. They really make you feel unique and pay attention to detail. I love it there! Btw: You must try their Branzino if you enjoy a tender, mild favored fish with a spicy seafood homemade sauce and I will definitely be back!
I went to Sampannee Thai for the first time for my birthday dinner this year and it was such a great experience! The people working here are super friendly and the service is attentive and efficient. The food was spectacular and fresh, and in particular, Max, Chali , Pat did a fantastic job of making my birthday dinner special! The meats were very tasty but I was especially impressed by the papaya salads, Pad See Ew, and Yellow curry. Dining here was such a great experience and I will definitely be back!
Super quick service, great flavours too. They don’t hold back on the spice levels 🌶️ which I really appreciate. The drunken noodles were spectacular and personally I liked it more than the Pad Thai because it was saucier and packed a punch. The lunch menu is great value for money with a small appetiser along with the main. The Thai Ice tea was authentic and delicious, and a great way to cool off from the spice of the food.
The experience could be quite good if not a waitress who was serving us. We were there with friends, there weren't many people. She was quite aggressive and rude, and when we asked to split the bill, she showed us that she was very disappointed. Furthermore, she behave very unprofessional, arguing with the group, and finally she punched one of our friends (a woman) in the arm, which is totally unacceptable. Never visiting this place again, at least until she stops working there.
The service is terrible. The waiters are so unfriendly. I will never choose this restaurant again
So delicious and such great service. Can’t wait to go back here.
Really reat food for a fair price! Highly recommend pineapple stir fry rice. Also good for people with coeliac disease, meaning they are careful with gluten contamination.
The food and service was the best!!! Atmosphere, the aesthetics are not giving, the place needs to redesigned a little bit to get a modern crisp look.
We ordered the shrimp pad thai and spring rolls. Order came to about $32. This was the second worst pad Thai I’ve ever had. Flavor wasn’t there and the shrimp mushy. The spring rolls were super basic. Totally not worth it.
Ordered takeout from here and got a yellow curry. It was terrible. The tofu and potatoes did not look fresh and were way over cooked. The "curry" barely had any curry at all and was bland. The pad thai was just about edible, not great either.

Don’t be fool with the appearance. Don’t get the Steamed Fish if you are trying for the first time. The prices are so high for the portion.Even the sauces smell so bad.
Everything was great!
I love Thai food and actively search for it every place I go, this has been the best one I’ve had since we lived in NYC.
Food, atmosphere, service, cleanliness, all 10/10.
Prices were reasonable for the DC area.
You can find free parking if you’re willing to walk a couple blocks, which was not a problem for us.
have not been yet, groupon 2 dines includes wine or beer, 40.00 great deal. I gave 3 review because I'm from out of state and don't typically need to pay to park to dine. I wished their website had details on parking. I still think I will try it
I had the duck roll and Basil Fried rice with shrimp and everything was tasty. The food came out in time and the service was good. I highly recommend.
I ordered the drunken noodles. With basil and tofu. It tasted good but the noodles were mushy.
Ok
Wow. Unassuming from the outside, you really wouldn’t know what to expect from this perfectly located spot, but stepping inside reveals a fun dine-in experience and competent, friendly service, but most importantly, phenomenal food. Every dish we ordered was hot, so fresh, and wonderfully spiced and tasty - wjth much larger portions than expected. I definitely recommend sharing.
Would absolutely return and recommend, again and again. Try the Massaman curry. You won’t regret it.
We will definitely be back when we return to DC. Best Thai food ever! Had chicken satays, pad Thai, yellow curry, and chicken Gyoza. Excellent meat quality and flavours. Lovely staff!
I absolutely love this restaurant. The atmosphere is stunning and the people are incredibly kind and understanding. They work hard and move fast. They make you feel special and cared for as well! The food is delicious. I have been here more than once and I always order something the different. Every time, it is a win! Their drinks look so aesthetically pleasing as well! If you have any dietary concerns or restrictions, they are more then happy to help and change what ever you need in order to get your meal perfect for you! If you want to eat somewhere beautiful, with incredible people and delicious food, this is the place for you! My review can only express a little of my joy of this place! Adore it! COME GET YOUR FOOD!!!!!
This has made my list as the worst Thai restaurant in the DMV area.
If you are from South East Asia, you might not even consider this a thai restaurant.
One of my favorite spots! I have never been disappointed by the food, the cocktails, or the service. Yes, it is an authentic Thai foods It is the perfect place to relax with friends with nice happy hour and lunch special and found this place as warm and welcoming as ever.
The lunch special was delicious - I got a salad appetizer and drunken noodle with pork which was super tender and flavorful! Service was attentive and I left full and happy.
No option for utensil check; food was decent.
We got takeout from there, and it was horrible. We got a lot of the curries, and they tasted bland it was very liquidy.
I went to Sampannee Thai for the first time for my boyfriend's birthday dinner this year and it was such a great experience! The people working here are super friendly and the service is attentive and efficient. They gave a Mango cake as a compliment for a birthday's gift. The food was spectacular and fresh, Moreover their staff did a fantastic job of making my boyfriend's birthday dinner special! The meat was very tasty but I was especially impressed by the spring rolls, curry, and pork leg on rice. Moreover, their portions are very big. Dining here was such a great experience and I will definitely be back!
I tried it three times. The first time it had just opened in the owner was there from Bangkok and it was really really good. I tried it maybe a month later and it was just okay, and now I don't know maybe a year since they've been open a while and again it was just ok. The sauce on the Penang Curry was good but the chicken was tough even though it was sliced thin. The staff is really nice here. And the place was packed on a Thursday evening.
Hands down my favorite Thai restaurant in the nation’s capital! The service was impeccable throughout my visit. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu, offering great recommendations and ensuring our glasses were always full.
It is located in DuPont Circle NW. The ambiance was equally impressive, with a charming decor that enhanced the overall dining experience without overwhelming it. The attention to detail, from the presentation of the dishes to the quality of the ingredients, was evident and greatly appreciated.
Highly recommended.
Very welcoming atmosphere when I came in. I truly love their chicken pad Thai; it's the most authentic I've had so far here in the East Coast. I was celebrating my birthday weekend and I was treated by our friendly server with their delicious thai coffee for free! Their steamed dumplings are to die for! I highly recommend this place. Would love to visit again when I return to DC 😀
Tout est parfait: restaurant très bien situé dans un quartier animé de Washington, service rapide, serveurs très agréables, cuisine très bonne à un prix raisonnable.
I was first here when they opened. At the time, they didn't have any alcoholic drinks - but the virgin drinks were amazing.
Today, I returned and enjoyed their green curry and the Pad Spicy Eggplant.
Everything was absolutely delicious! I wasn't sure about the green curry at first, but the first bite convinced me !
The food was great and the service was fantastic. The staff was friendly and one of the members gave me a Croc charm as a gift.
I cannot recommend this place enough! We just picked up khao soi, tom yum pad thai, and mango sticky rice for takeout and OMG this is the best Thai food I’ve had outside of Thailand. It was so fresh and flavorful, and definitely not what I would otherwise expect from Thai takeout. We will definitely be back, the restaurant seemed so fun inside and the staff was friendly!
Took my sister out for a delayed birthday celebration. I read a lot about this restaurant and I think this is one of the best Thai restaurants in DC when it comes to freshness of food and hospitality. We had a great time. We started off with Mekong Sour and Hello 911, I’m on Fire. The drinks were delicious but the Hello 911 stole the show. It was not too spicy in my opinion but packed a ton of flavor. We started with the spring rolls and sampannee wings. The wings were so good we had to get another. I would have gotten another to be honest. For the main course we got the spicy basil fried rice (with beef) and the fried fish. I really want to emphasize the freshness of the food. My sister has been to Thailand before and she kept raving about the similarities in food quality. One of our host (Ratta) did a great job sharing great energy with us and making the experience enjoyable. This is definitely on my list of good restaurants in DC. I highly recommend.
This restaurant has excellent customer service, when I called and told them my order was wrong they replaced it no question asked and added in free spring rolls. I really appreciate there service.
Great food, excellent service. So happy we discovered this restaurant and recommended our hotel (Embassy Suites) to include on their list.
Always a good choice when in the mood of Thai food.
Such a beautiful place with delicious food! The staff was nice and quick! Would definitely recommend :)
I ordered a pad thai, and basically got ketchup soup. The noodles were extremely overcooked, and so were the veggies. The bean sprouts were cold and clearly thrown in without a care. I don’t mind a ketchup based pad thai at all, but the balance and texture were completely off. Maybe their curries are good, but I would not trust any of their noodle dishes.
The service was also very rushed despite it being early and the restaurant not being busy. I was visibly in a hurry, so quick service would have been great, but they cleared my plate as I was putting my fork down from the last bite.
Would not return
Food and service were excellent! The manager is fun and cute, she is my favorite. The duck curry was tender and delicious.
Papaya salad it was good but duck curry has a bad smell,
I go there every week. As a Thai person I LOVE there foods. And the customer service is on point. It is like a family cooking for you
Delicious food and wonderful atmosphere! 😋 I always come for the curry puffs, the curry and duck roll. The food never fails to impress. The drinks are also very 👍 good.
This place is the best! The staff are always friendly and the drunken noodles are the best in town.
They have a great recipes! feel really authentic and they don’t cater to you they cook what they want. SO GOOD!!!!
Great food
Glad to see all the positive reviews, that’s what we thought as well. Really friendly, really good food and fast service!
My friends and I decided to swing by for some snacks, and were very much surprised with how awesome this place is! I have to say, I haven't had good Thai food like this in quite some time so I am super impressed.
The food was great except for the steamed dumplings - the wonton disintegrated instead of having that usual chewy texture.
Very good service, nice atmosphere.
My wife and I went here after work today. It was great! We had mango juice and a couple of mocktails. They have an assortment of alcoholic options, we just wanted mocktails. We had steamed dumplings for an appetizer, and then the Khou soi chicken and the fish hot pot. Both were delicious.
We will definitely be returning.
Chicken had a particular smell and the food was ordinary. Staffs were nice but nothing to boast or complain about.
Was here for quick dinner. The food was delicious. However the drinks wasn’t strong. You probably need an extra shot. Lol
The staff were so amazingly nice and friendly.
The food was good, but the service was terrible. I asked for hot sauce, they never brought it. I asked for them to print a receipt, they never did. And I asked for some take out in addition to dine-in, and they didn't include the Thai Tea with the order, but still charged me for it. Very disappointing.
Great place to hang out and have good food at an affordable price
The food was good but what made this place special was the ambiance and the cozy nature of the space. Highly reccomend checking out.
So good! Authentic Thai, with great Northern Thai menu items - some of the best I’ve had in the US. Would encourage fellow diners to look beyond the reliable curries and noodle dishes to try something new here - you won’t be disappointed!
I absolutely love the ambience and the amazing service at Sampannee. I was fortunate enough to make it there for happy hour, which has some wonderful options. I tried the fried tofu which was absolutely delicious. I love that It came out with a sauce, but literally can eat this by itself. For my main dish, I had the red curry, which was Divine. I enjoyed it with veggies and tofu, which kept my dinner super light. Definitely will be back!
High quality … cool atmosphere …
Really good Thai food at very reasonable prices.
We arrived at 8:30pm on a Friday night and the place was packed. The restaurant was small as is with approx 16 tables, seating 2-10. There is a small bar that seats maybe 5 but not sure how often they use it or allow people to actually sit there. Seeing that they were busy and that there weren’t that many tables open, my partner and I were asked if we would be fine sitting at the bar and we gladly took that option. The number of people waiting died down quickly tho since a lot of them were waiting for their takeout or were waiting for a big table to free up.
The service is super nice and friendly and even though they were busy, they were super ready to help out whenever we had a request.
We got the Thai tea which was delicious and a bit on the sweet side. They use half and half which I think tastes better than using condensed milk. We also got the undercover shrimp and that was really good too. The sweet chili sauce included was much better than what other restaurants serve, and I don’t remember if they say it is made in house or not.
Entree wise we got shrimp pad Thai and chicken basil fried rice. Both were really good and accurate to what we’ve had before in the past. The pad Thai, although not being marked as spicy, does have a little kick although more experienced spice eaters will not find any whatsoever. The basil fried rice is spicy per the menu but can be modified to accommodate tolerances higher and lower.
Sharing everything, it came out to ~$30 a person.
10/10 would recommend.
My friends and I ended up here after attempting to eat at the popular Sura. It was a decently pleasant experience I’d say. Felt very authentic for a Thai restaurant. The server we had, was a bit brash and unfriendly and didn’t give us (or the table next to us) utensils. The food was good, I’d put it at middle tier Thai food. I ordered the Pad Woon Sen with shrimp. It was made well but lacked flavor, but I added spices to it from the spice tray to give it some more depth. My partner ordered the Pad Thai which tasted better than my dish.
Excellent
Delicious Thai food at a reasonable price. If I was allowed, I'd be here every week.
Muy excelente la comida acá! 100% recomendable.
Best Thai food in DC! Great atmosphere and above & beyond service. The undercover shrimp is delicious and the pad Thai is the best we’ve found in the area!
I like their pad thai seafood. Even though they missed one menu, they handled it well.
I went there for dinner and the place started to get packed quickly. The space is small but cute. I ordered some curry dish with chicken. The chicken was so dry that it was a choking hazzard. At the end we got our bill and there was an extra 10$ charge for each person that I didn't realize until later. We messaged the restaurant to get the receipt since we didn't get the printed one while we were therr, yet to receive an answer.
Food was delicious! Exceptional service
My son raves about Sampannee. I will continue to buy Birthday gift certificates for him here. It’s the perfect gift!!
The drunken noodles were overcooked, as was the chicken, but the shrimp was good. The overall taste was an unpleasant sour acidity from too many tomatoes vs any hint of fish sauce or even tamarind. It's one of the worst I've ever tried. An extra $3 for 2 medium sized shrimp seems overkill as well.
Sampanee gets 5 *s not because it's fancy, which it's not, but because it's excellent and does all aspects well! We started with simple Spring Rolls and Chive Dumplings, both of which, and their sauces, were delicious. And the Rolls were not greasy. Our entrees were Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, and Sachkii (sp?) Salmon Curry, which had a Panang curry sauce. All 3 entrees were delicious and cooked just right. Even the hot tea was served in a delightful porcelain tea service. The service was attentive without being overboard. I'd go back there for sure.
Wonderful staff and delicious food. Everything was great!
We've been here many times now and consider it the best Thai food in DC, with great service to match. The menu is unique with many items you won't find at other Thai restaurants in DC, and the food is authentic and delicious. They also have a fantastic, vibrant and cozy interior.
This place changed the game for us after having been frustrated by mediocre, expensive Thai for much of the 10 years we've lived in DC. Here's hoping they thrive in their Dupont perch for many years to come!
Good Thai place, quick and friendly service. My friend and I both enjoyed our meals (chicken panaang and drunken noodles with tofu). Lots of vegetarian and vegan options. They have dishes that are mild or spicy depending on your preference.
Delicious food and excellent service!
My friend brought me and my Gfriend to this place for a goodbye party. I got the braised beef soup. I liked it. My gfriend got the tiger steak with a side salad. The steak was perfectly cooked and the salad had a very fresh and fruity dressing. My soup was yummy and very flavorful but, as a recommendations constructive for the Cheff. A little less salt and more scallions or green onions, some more veggies. I thought the soup was missing something.
Food was very good. Authentic Thai.
Service was awesome. I asked if they could make me an espresso martini because they didn't have one on their menu. The staff said no problem and made me a really good espresso martini.
The drinks at this place are worth it. As well as the food.
Atmosphere gets 4 stars because silverware was a little spotty. Other than that the place is great. I enjoyed my time.
Great!
Food was AMAZING but be careful it's spicy. I'm going to try again because it was sooo good! Less spicy
Had Khao Soi, fried rice, iced tea and coffee. All were perfect. The staff was so nice. Would recommend 100%
Slow progress to driver.
Incredible food, outstanding service, super relaxing and modern atmosphere. Will definitely recommend and come again. That curry hit different man!
The food is Excellent and they treat me really well. My favorite restaurant in town!
I had dinner here for the first time last night with my husband and it was fantastic. The staff is very kind and attentive, and service is very fast! We had the spring rolls, Thai iced tea, and green curry, and it was all delicious. The green curry is the best I’ve had in years. It’s so flavorful, balanced, and has the perfect amount of spice. The portions are fantastic too! We were very full and had leftovers for lunch too. This will definitely be a go-to spot for us!
Yellow curry was amazing!
I placed an online order for 2 vegan Pad See Ew. When I received my food, I noticed egg was in the dish which is not vegan. Why put a vegan option if you are not going to comply? Also, I found a hair while searching for the egg. I LOVE thai, but will never recommend your restaurant.
Everything was so good!! Amazing and way too kind and sweet employees!! A ten out of ten and their food is amazing!! It was so cool and pretty there! It’s pretty new and it’s a menu is a little small but so many good tasting foods! Also I had to take a picture of their mock/ cocktails, they were so pretty and cool! Def a must have for tourist and visitors in town since it’s so close to inns and hotels!!
Please get the pad kee mao, perfect noodle texture, it was a magical experience.
Muy buena comida Tailandesa
Not recommended,
Decided to check out Sampannee on a Saturday night to satisfy a Thai craving!!!! They had seating available but we also saw an option to join a wait list. At that time wait was less than 5 minutes so we just walked over. We were able to take our pick of tables.
The decor is super cute as if you were sitting with family. Loved the pillows.
We have our favorites but decided to try different dishes. For apps, we got the undercover shrimp and the dirty wings with Larb seasoning
What is Larb??? Deliciousness, that's what! Wings were crisply breaded and sprinkled in this seasoning. We could eat these all by itself!
The undercover shrimp was shrimp fried in a roll. The sauce served was perfectly sweet with a slight kick.
For mains, we tried the yellow curry, and of course, I had to get pineapple fried rice. The pineapple rice comes with both chicken and shrimp here!!! Perfectly cooked veggies, perfect pineapple chunksand a perfect amount of raisins and cashews. You won't need any sauce for this rice. The flavors on its own are great!
Now to the yellow curry. They ask for your level of spice so you will get it how you like it. We chose medium! If we thought the pineapple rice was amazing. THE CURRY!!! It just blew us away. We tried it with both the bowl of white rice and the pineapple rice. Before leaving it was decided this place will have another visit so we can take food home!
Drinks (non alcoholic)- We tried the wonder berry and white peach. Wonderberry was our favorite. White leach was good but the peach flavor was more towards the bottom and gone after a few sips. The drink was left with a nice sweet lime flavor afterwards.
The staff was amazing and attentive. Great service. We were checked in regarding the timeliness of our food as well as for the taste. Very much appreciated.
Sampannee is pretty new and with this great food and service we look forward to returning again and again. This has been some of the best, most flavorful Thai food we've had and I have tried many of places!
Some of the best Thai food and service in all of dc. From the minute you walk into th ornate restaurant the staff greats you and treats you amazing. They even share some of the history of the art.
The food is better than expected and prices are perfect. I love all the copper cups and serving tools. I had the garlic chicken with one of the best papaya salads ever and my friend had the curry. We split the undercover shrimp as an appetizer.
I’ll definitely be back.
I visited with my family and everything about the place was wonderful. The food has with really authentic Thai taste and is served with a great touch. We started with spring rolls and small regular Tom Ka soup, followed by Pad Thai and Roasted Duck Curry. Since they don’t have kids menu, the chef prepared specially for my kid a delicious egg noodle with chicken. Loved the atmosphere, the service and all. The personnel is very friendly and polite. Highly recommended!
Amazing food!!!! Order the soup Tom Kha,, that soup will forever stay in my heart
Staff was friendly. Khao soi was expensive and flavorless. Portion was small, I left hungry.
Great staff, great food. Really enjoyed the duck roll and green curry.
A wonderful new addition to the neighborhood. Great food and good prices. Don't be put off by going up a flight of stairs!
