Donsak serves simple delicious Thai food in a modern little space.
Donsak Thai Restaurant was an absolute delight. Despite being quite busy, the staff were incredibly accommodating, promptly asking if we had made a reservation. Although we hadn't, they managed to seat us within just two minutes. The staff exuded warmth and efficiency, creating a welcoming atmosphere with their great energy. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and impeccably clean.
We began our meal with some refreshing Thai iced tea, followed by delectable gyozas, Thai fried rice with chicken, and a rich green curry. Every dish was perfect, bursting with authentic flavors and freshness. I was thoroughly impressed with my entire experience and am eagerly looking forward to returning for the sticky mango dessert.
By far, the best Thai restaurant in DC!!! My wife and I have dined here multiple times and we love everything about Donsak. First, the atmosphere is open and inviting, the hostess and wait staff is attentive and hardworking, the owner is engaging and strives to provide the best experience. Now about the food, always fresh and with just right amount of spices. My favourite is crispy kapow duck (maybe misspelled). Freshly steamed veggies with steamed rice with ample serving of succulent duck. Picture included. Papayas salad is always fresh. We prefer spicy, but you can order anyway you want.
Please never mind other reviews that mention small portions, they are just right, unless your use to all you can eat at Chillies. Bottom line, you will not regret coming here. Warning, please make reservations, otherwise, you may not get a table.
I showed up very early for my reservation and the hostess seated me right away. Soon after, water was served and my drink order was taken. Upon returning with my Thai iced tea, my food order was taken. The Crab Rangoon came out fast, hot and so yummy. Next, the Pad Thai with tofu was served and was so delicious. For dessert, I had to try their sticky rice and mangoes and it didn't disappoint. Staff was very attentive, often checking to make sure I was okay and had what I needed.
Such a delicious dinner that we had,
Be careful though some dishes are made with pork so make sure to read and ask the waiter for help, ( disappointing that dumplings were made with pork so it can’t be removed)
Best experience when you order several options and share so you can try different flavors
My absolute fav dishes were panang curry (to die for)
Pad see ew ordered it without the eggs it was chewy as I wished it to be.
Crab Rangoon was creamy and amazing next to spicy dish
Papaya salad was awesome but spicy so you might ask to tone down the spiciness
My friend ordered duck dish and loved it
Indoors was a bit loud outdoors was great
Place is not fancy so you can dress as you wish
Very awesome authentic Thai restaurant especially local dishes in DC area. I can say it is not easy to find Thai food that has very original taste like this. I had Som Tam Pu Palar or Papaya salad with fermented crab and Thai anchovy. (A popular street food dish in Thailand) That was so so good. For me, everything was perfect - appearance, smell, texture, taste - 100% Thai Style. I really recommend this place if you are Thai or whoever wants to get real Thai flavor. Also the service were nice and friendly. The dining room might be a little tight when is crowded, but they has outdoor seating available.
The restaurant is located in Woodley park, near the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adam Morgan Metro station. Very convenient to get there.
Best thai curry in DC. The yellow curry will change your life.
Nicely decorated place. Staff speaks Thai! They have Isaan food on the menu. Food was great & a good portion size for the price. Seating was a bit cramped because the place is a bit small. Bathroom was nice & clean tho. Right by the Woodley Park metro station, so it’s a great place to go to if you’re also going to the Zoo.
Amazing Thai food experience with very kind and friendly staff! Went on a work trip off of a coworkers recommendation and was very satisfied with my experience! Would recommend a reservation 🩷
Great food great service, clean, busy, fresh vibe!
Amazing. Order of the Essam menu if you want to try something new!
The food is top notch here. Fresh and flavorful. I've been several times and never disappointed. Extra points for including Mango Sticky Rice with dessert options. Atmosphere is not my bag, very modern and fusion-y and I prefer a mom and pop kind of cozy setting. But the food makes everything ok.
Loved my noodles (forgotten the name unfortunately, but they were very wide and deliciously spiced)! Friendly service and well priced.
Attention Uber, Doordash, Grubhub drivers! Be cautious with this restaurant! They consistently delay food pickup times, and when you ask why, they retaliate by giving you low ratings on the app. I realized this today. From now on, I will never accept an order from this restaurant again, and you shouldn't either. The owner is extremely rude. They prepared the food 15 minutes later than the scheduled time and wasted my time during the busiest hours.
They charge a 30% gratuity on all orders.
I love Thai food. I have had Thai food in many countries including in Bangkok. Until my experience at Donsak, I did not know that it was possible to make Thai food tasteless. And, utterly so.
And, by the way, the chief hostess there is rude and unwelcoming. I am never going back.
Good service.
Papaya salad is a little bit salty for me but overall is fine.
Best Thai I’ve found in DC
I like soups here. Hospitable, good service, yummy food.
First, when we arrived I asked for a particular table near the front window so we could watch for an old friend who we were meeting. The table was unoccupied and unreserved. The hostess said she would ask “the boss”. An older white lady arrived and looked at us reluctantly and said she would need it for a group arriving in 1.5 hours. This seemed odd and a little rude but no problem as we are in a hurry.
The food was ok, but nothing special. Particularly the spring rolls were devoid of flavor. The soups were the only positive note.
Our waitress was rather inattentive. At one point in the meal I caught the eye of “the boss” and asked for duck sauce. She came to our table and began to ask me about the Starbucks cup on my table. Was it mine? Didn’t I think it was rude to bring outside food into “her restaurant”? I didn’t think it was rude because I wasn’t drinking it in “her restaurant”, plus it isn’t like they serve a Flat White in “her restaurant”. It was embarrassing to be treated like an errant school boy in front of friends. I told her I didn’t appreciate her rudeness but she didn’t care. It’s “her restaurant” and she is “the boss”! Too bad she never learned customer service.
Kitti is an exceptional server! His calm and respectful approach made our dining experience so enjoyable. He’s incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and gave us fantastic recommendations that were spot-on. It’s clear he genuinely cares about providing great service and ensuring every guest has a wonderful time. Thank you, Kitti, for your professionalism and hospitality—we’ll definitely be back!
Sweet older lady who met me at the front desk for my pick up order. She had a grandson born a couple weeks prior that shares a name with me. I just thought she was very sweet and welcoming. Food was delicious. I did take out but the restaurant itself looked cozy. Good date spot I'd imagine. My wife got the pad whai and it was awesome.
This is the best Thai restaurant we've tried in the DC area, and we've tried a lot. The panang curry was especially good with some subtle flavors.
Favorite thai food in DC.
Would recommend papaya salad, chicken satay, eggplant, and panang curry.
Thought Pad Ke Mow (not flavorful, too oily, no char), Pad Se Ew (not super flavorful, no char), and Pad Thai (dry and too sweet) were alright
Being from NYC, I have pretty high standards for Thai food and this place didn’t disappoint. The service was fine (neither too slow, nor too fast) and the food was enjoyable. Standout dishes included the chive pancakes, fresh summer rolls, mushroom soup, tofu jungle, and pad vegetables. For seven entrées, three drinks, and five appetizers, the total came to around $300 which is not bad at all for the quality and variety!
I live in the neighborhood (a resident of 10 years) and, up until yesterday, never had a problem the few times I have eaten here at Donsak Thai.
However, on Wednesday 10/23, I ordered food for pickup - pad Thai and tom yum soup with shrimp - and I got severely sick a few hours after eating the meal so much so I had to miss work today on 10/24.
In particular, I’m pretty sure it was the chili peppers and possibly even the shrimp (that may have gone bad?) in the soup might have been the culprits.
Diarrhea, nausea, sweats, and abdominal pain for over 24 hours is just not acceptable from “bad food.”
I will avoid this place and would recommend Paragon Thai in Cleveland Park on Connecticut Avenue where I have never ever had an issue including with their pad thais or tom yum soups.
Awful restaurant with very rude staff. The food tastes cheap and over concentrated with low quality ingredients, sauces. Disappointed. Worst thai food I tried.
Great service, great food!!
I love the food here. I had with two friends and everyone enjoyed the food! The wanton mushroom soup was delicious! I had Ka Prow with chicken the sauce was tasty! I’m so glad Woodley Park has great food!
Crispy Duck was excellent
I showed up very early for my reservation and the hostess seated me right away. Soon after, water was served and my drink order was taken. Upon returning with my Thai iced tea, my food order was taken. The Crab Rangoon came out fast, hot and so yummy. Next, the Pad Thai with tofu was served and was so delicious. Got take out here and again food was very good. The Thai dumplings were yummy and we LOVE the pad see ew. Noodles are so tender. We tried the fried green beans in garlic this time and added beef. Tasty but it was quite spicy! Only thing is take out portions could be larger, which is the only thing we’ve gotten before, so I’m not sure how it compares to dining in
This place is my go to for Thai food. I normally get the pad Thai with a different protein, but will switch it up with the menu items and they’re all delicious Normally, when I come in and sit every once in a while, the services is great; friendly and fast.
We had a very nice early dinner. They let us sit outside a few minutes before opening, and then the service started at opening time and was very good. Good. The food was also very good.

This is the best Thai food in DC and so many vegan options 🫶🏾🤞🏾
Very good flavor with portions not too big or small. Highly recommend the drunken noodle
Amazing restaurant that serves both crowd pleasers and some more unique dishes. Very nice atmosphere and a thoughtful wine selection that pairs well with the food. Portion sizes are reasonable - an appetizer is probably a good idea, which is great, because they are delicious.
Donsak Thai Restaurant was an absolute delight. Despite being quite busy, the staff were incredibly accommodating, promptly asking if we had made a reservation. Great food, quick service. It gets pretty crowded on a good workday during and after lunch so if you call ahead of time, they can hold the table for you. The Wonton Soup is flavorful and I had the cashew chicken which was very good. Pretty hefty portions as well. Great spot.
The “regional specialties” section of their menu on its own is the best Thai restaurant in DC. I make sure our party orders the nham kao tod every time—the fermented sausage and all the flavors are overwhelming in the best way possible.
Tasty food. My favorite was the Pad See Ew which I sometimes get with just tofu instead of meat.
As a Thai family living in both Virginia and Maryland, we can vouch that the food here is as authentic as it gets. We have eaten everywhere in the DMV area and this restaurant is by far the best in our experience.
Interesting flavors. Fresh ingredients
Best Thai in DC region!
Best Thai food that I've ever had. 💯
Excellent thai food!
The food is exceptionally good and the service very friendly and efficient. However, the noise level was painful and the air conditioning set uncomfortably low. They should hang some sound absorbant decorations and raise the temperature a few degrees. Weather permitting, sit outside for a truly enjoyable meal.
We live in Woodley Park, and this is our favorite restaurant in the area. While this is often a carry-out spot for us, we've dined in and had great time. The food is always delicious and the staff are kind. I'd highly recommend!

Very busy place. Waiting for a long time and turn around
I love this place! The food is phenomenal, staff is super nice. though I usually do take away, the restaurant seems very cosy too!
Duck rolls and steamed dumplings are to die for!
First time ordering steamed veggies, and they are really good too, which for such simple food is hard to find around.
Main dishes are also all very good!
Very highly recommend!
High quality and delicious food. Highly recommend!!
Best Thai food we have had in the DMV. By far. Everything was outstanding. Service was fast and efficient.
Seafood curry was well worth trying over my usual, pad thai. Spring rolls and chicken wings all for $40? Not bad
Best Thai food I have had in this country! Get the crispy rice with fermented pork. Wow!
Incredible flavors. Mushroom soup and the Donsak noodles are delicious. If you’re looking for good Thai in DC, look no further 👏
Donsak is by far the best Thai restaurant in DC. The food is authentic and delicious, the staff are friendly, and the atmosphere is chic and cozy. I can’t wait to go back again soon!
Drinks were lite on alcohol, spices were good and food was fresh.
I've had better Thai, but this was OK. Ordered the kao soi with chicken. The sauce was a little thin, and the chicken was a skin-on chicken thigh (bone in).
While out in the Woodley Park section of D.C, I happened upon Donsak. This was a great experience with exception to the host, an elder European woman who I appreciated offering me a seat at the bar..had several tables to accommodate just me [1]..yet chose to inform me that she needed the table at 7, a little less than a hour from the time I walked in. While I do understand the need to honor reservations..she spent more time emphasizing this than getting me seated...and I acknowledged that I understand and it's up to how fast I'm served. It was approximately 6:10P...
*It was the manner that I was approached given that -there was ample time and -feasible for [1] person to be seated/served that was uncalled for. At the top of the hour, as I entered the establishment, I didn't need to be informed of the management of their reservations..Of course, being a party of [1] and them serving my order in adequate time, I comfortably ate, drank and paid my bill to walk out by 6:40....No problem...
Loved the food.
Disliked (the manner of approach) at my point of entry, being introduced with a reservation time that not only had nothing to do with me + my visit as a party of [1] would not impact that reservation given the time I walked into this establishment.
Merci,
☮️♏️
Yummy
Delicious food, great menu, great service, good prices and vibe. Loved it!
The food, service and ambiance here is wonderful. Very authentic with some unique Eastern Thai dishes from Donsak region of Thailand. The house made sausage was very tasty. All your usual favorites are on the menu too. The Mango & Sticky Rice is the absolute best we’ve had anywhere!
I dine here when I crave thai food. So far, every dish we ordered is good. I still jave a favorite thai place I go to in Virginia but in DC, this is the most authentic. I love their basil fried rice and all the flat noodles. The taste is authentic. Service is always good even when there is a crowd. Ambience is nice. They don't rush you even when they are busy. The place is small but summer is coming, there are outdoor seatings too.
The only thing I wish for is the portions to be bigger for the price point. 2 persons meal will cost about USD70 for two entrees and 2 appetizer. It is on the high end. They are delicious but not something I could eat regularly.
Great service and best Thaï restaurent ever!!!Absolutly delicious!!!!
We can't say enough great things about the owner and staff at Donsak, who seamlessly hosted a private birthday event for us. They did a great job welcoming guests and serving a variety of dishes in a well-timed and efficient way. The menu is varied and the food is consistently exceptional. It is definitely worth a visit whether you're a local resident or visiting from elsewhere.
Great food options from various regions of Thailand. Spice level was authentic if you ask for it. Service a bit tardy. Took them a while to get us seated.
Food was great and as well as the service!
The food was good, but the portion sizes seemed pretty small for the prices. See the photos for what the portions looked like when we opened them. The single scoop of rice and small amount of curry, in particular, were pretty egregious. Considering it’s more expensive than Thai and Time Again a block away, I’ll probably hesitate to go again.
This was my first time eating in this restaurant and my first time trying Thai food actually.
Honestly it was a bit hard knowing what to pick (first timer as I said) but thankfully chalita was very kind and helped me by explaining the menu and patiently answering my questions about the food and I did like what I had ordered.
I'm definitely coming back again.
This was my first experience at Donsack. I enjoyed the food. They had a nice space for outdoor dining and live music. My friend and I opted for indoors.
Love this place. Among the best Thai in DC!
Small, super minor suggestion for the owners—no need for television screens it’s distracting and diminishes the otherwise pleasant ambiance of this amazing establishment.
The owner, Boom truly is the sweetest person! Very kind and professional. Her staff follows her wonderful energy, creating a more welcome environment.
I think this is also the best Thai food in DC. In addition to having a specifically Essan menu, referring to a region in Thailand.
Very welcoming and friendly team at the restaurant however I've been at many thai establishments and the food at Donsak tonight was lacking thai flavor and spice. I tried the Essam sausage was which the best thing we had, wings weren't seasoned, pad kee mao lacked flavor and spice (max spice requested), pad see ew was okay, the pork belly in the Essam pork dish were pork bits, and last the green curry duck was not spicy and lacked flavor.
Great Thai food at reasonable prices. I had the chive cakes and steak salad and they were excellent. The authentic Thai Essan menu is also supposed to be nice
One of the worst Thai places I’ve ever tasted!! Do not come here if you value flavor!!The noodles are completely flavorless. The portion size is also tiny. The food is barely edible. Please go somewhere else if you want good Thai food!!
I ordered the som tam thai on UberEats yesterday and I am still thinking about it. It brought me great joy. Normally I order everything "Thai hot" in the US because everything is watered down, flavorless, and sad -- but the Essan menu here made me think that maybe this place is authentic, so I just ordered "spicy" -- and it was perfect. It was hot, fiery, pungent, sour, mouth-watering deliciousness in every bite, with the undertone of roasted peanuts and baby shrimp there to add depth and balance. Every bite sent my synapses crackling. I cannot wait to come eat here in person. Very good job.
We have been ordering food here for a few months. Initially the experience was very good, but recently the portion size is smaller and overall quality of food is not as satisfying.
We're from Houston and in DC for meetings Fri-Sat. Hubby found this small gem while browsing for eateries within walking distance from our hotel (Omni Shoreham). They accept reservations and perhaps it's best to get reservation in advance for weekend dinner, the place is rather small (seats perhaps 40-48 max) and gets busy fast. The manager and staff are actual Thais, they were courteous and helpful, very attentive and communicative, and provide great service! We had papaya salad and duck spring roll appetizers, Khao Soi curry and duck breast entrees, and mango-sticky rice dessert. Everything was really delicious and authentic, very similar to Thai food we had when we visited Thailand last year! We will definitely come back again when we're in town!
The people are super nice. The atmosphere is cozy. The food seemed a little too oily for my taste.
The food here is delicious! Decent prices, and I appreciate that when a dish is marked as spicy, it’s actually spicy. The dining area is a bit on the smaller side, but it is a nice and cozy atmosphere. Overall I would recommend.
Food was outstanding. Portion sizes were not shareable. Stir fried seafood with curry was amazing
The food is very bad, the employees are disrespectful, the toilets are dirty... it is definitely a bad place.
This is my favorite restaurant in DC. I don’t normally even like Thai food, but Donsak is a stand out. Normally I order the same few dishes over and over at restaurants, but Donsak has so many good ones; the Essan menu is particularly good and seems to have some Laotian influence. I went on opening day, met the owner who is super nice and continues to work there most times we visit, and have been coming back ever since. Really great food, service, value and atmosphere all around!
A bit overpriced but the food is very tasty!! Always great service
The food was Fantastic! I wish we lived closer! I've been spoiled for other Thai restaurants now! They have BIG shoes to fill!
Nice little shop with authentic Thai food. Right near the subway station. Monday night wasn't too busy, got a table right away. The wait on food wasn't long.
The muscle and salmon in 100 Island are flawlessly cooked, not a minute less or too long – perfectly tender. The spare ribs soup is delightful, and the service is both quick and attentive.
The pork belly in my dish was very tough and made a tooth ache. I don't recall having such difficulty chewing meat or enjoying thai food. Was expecting so much better with Donsak's high ratings.
A neighborhood jewel. Good food and service. Large take out business.still very good.
Small place and had to wait for 30+ min but amazing food and service. Loved their food suggestions and explanation of how the dish would be. Tried the yellow curry, Donsak chicken and the fried papaya salad with shrimp. Each was unique and tasted yumm!!! Stick rice with mango was good. I would happily visit this place again
Excellent local Thai restaurant with interesting authentic dishes. One of the best in the area.
Delicious Thai restaurant by the Smithsonian Zoo 😋
We've ordered takeout 3 times and have had 4-5 of the vegetarian entrees. Each time was fantastic. It seems like they use the freshest and best ingredients compared to other Thai I've had in NW DC. Their takeout portions seem a bit smaller than others, but to me it's worth it for the quality. And by smaller I feel like I get 1.5 meals instead of 2 for me. It's the best Khao Soi I've had in DC as well. They don't cut corners and have the pickled greens, red onion and the crunchy noodles. Can't wait to eat in sometime!
We ordered the red curry, nham Kao tod, and Som Tam Pu Palar. All three were amazing. We also got the lemongrass French 75 and fig dark and stormy. The drinks were very refreshing and went with the food. We got to meet the co-owner and manager, Boom, she was so kind and helpful. Overall, one of the best meals and experiences I’ve had in DC.
I had a wonderful dinner with friends celebrating a 9 year old birthday and everything was excellent and thank you and will visit soon again.
I cannot say enough things about this place, my absolute favorite Thai spot! Whether I pick up or dine-in, the experience and the food never disappoints!! On top of that, the staff is very warm and friendly! A true gem!
Really really disappointed (and continue to be) at the price ($15, which I think is already expensive) for the quantity of food you get here. I live around the corner and have gotten food here probably 5-6 times and every time, I'm reminded about the lack of food for the cost. This time, though, was egregious- the ka pow was so much less than the pad thai, and none of our dishes even filled the containers or our stomachs. I will be ordering outside the neighborhood from now on.
Great service, very attentive. I loved the Pad Khee Mow and Fried Ice Cream. Really delicious
Really great food.
I had lunch here with my husband. The staff was very nice and kind, and there were plenty of tables in the seating area + the bar area.
We ordered:
1. Tom Kha soup (5/5: Delicious! It was cold that day, and having this soup was perfect. It warmed my soul. ☺️)
2. Thai dumplings (4/5: Very delicious, but I don't think I'll order it again.)
3. Panang Curry w/ combo meat (3/5: The curry sauce was excellent, but the pork, chicken, and beef were a bit chewy and dry. I thought shrimps might be better than meat 🤔, so I'll try it with shrimps next time since the curry sauce was good.)
4. Grilled Pork Neck (10/10!!: This one was the best 🥹👍👍 The meat tasted like Korean sweet bulgogi, and the sauce paired well with it. Anyone should try this here!)
5. Mango w/ sticky rice (5/5: they used fresh and well-ripened mango. It was delicious 😋)
+ We enjoyed their food so much that we ordered from UberEats, and the food was just as good on delivery. This place is now my favorite Thai restaurant in DC! 😊💕
Ordered delivery and the food was good, but the portions were very small compared to other places. Disappointing for the price I paid.
Very good food!
We went on a Sunday evening and had an absolutely amazing experience, the food was absolutely wonderful and the service was impeccable. We didn't have an empty glass once and had some of the tastiest gang panang!
The Pad Thai and Red Curry were both delicious and the service was wonderful. Thank you!
Delicious food, best new restaurant in the neighborhood. Every time I’ve eaten here it’s been great!
Phenomenal dining experience! This place has your common Thai dishes, but has a subset of the menu focused on lesser known regional dishes (Essan menu). We ordered off this menu and had some amazing dishes with very unique flavors. I highly recommend this place!
Constantly good service and food, our go to thai in dc!
It’s OK. Entree prices were ok but pad Thai and basil rice were greasier than we’re used to. Shrimp on the rice and chicken satay was also very soft it was a little weird to be honest wasn’t expecting that texture. Dumpling were small and not as flavorful as the description made it out to be. Interested in other menu items, maybe there was some issues in the kitchen as our food took quite a while to come out and unfortunately was not worth the wait.
Don’t hesitate you need to come eat here. Delishes food, good service and nice atmosphere.
Lovely atmosphere. Amazing food. It's really seriously spicy. I was sweating bullets and I love spicy food. I mean look at my name and my face. You be the judge. Overall, my favorite Thai place in DC hands down.
Absolutely awesome Thai and Essan menu. Food was phenomenal. Amy was awesome. Great cocktails. Almost came back to eat dinner after we ate lunch.
Already thinking about what I want to order next. Great food. Cute ambiance. Sweet service.
Food was delicious but a little pricy for the serving size
