We heard South Side Thai recently reopened under new ownership, with a chef that we used to love from a restaurant that’s now closed. We found it to be the same food we knew and loved from the other spot! I had never been to South Side prior to this visit, so I can’t say how it compares to the previous ownership, but we were very happy with our meal here. The Choo Chee duck is one of our favorite dishes from this chef! The food arrived to the table quickly, and the new owners were friendly and welcoming. The dining room was clean and inviting. A great spot to know about in Wallingford for Thai food!

This little nonscript almost delightful oasis was a gem. Greetings at the door, seating in stressless environment of soft piano music. Staff very attentive and a menu is everything Tai food is. And all offerings are fresh vegetables. The environment invites you just enjoy and relax. I spent two hours just enjoying the ambience. Amazing meals extremely satisfying. I actually don't think people know about them so on my media in my town which supports local restaurants they might understand how to promote their business but I put it on town site. This place should be celebrated in our community. I got you because you are awesome

Don’t be fooled by its modest exterior—inside, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a clean, cozy setup. A stunning picture window on one end and a sleek built-in wall fire on the other create a delightful ambiance, all complemented by smooth jazz playing overhead.

The staff was incredibly friendly and efficient, making us feel right at home. As for the food—wow! Every dish was impressive, crafted with fresh ingredients and presented beautifully. We enjoyed summer rolls, papaya salad, and two different noodle dishes, all bursting with flavor and served in generous portions. The attention to detail even extended to the tea, which came in the most exquisite cup with a delicate cover—a small touch that added to the charm.

Finding Thai food that checks all the boxes is rare, but South Side Thai exceeds expectations. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

When I’m not in Thailand I try to find authentic cuisine. Khao Soi here is an amazing replication of this classic Northern Thailand dish. It’s hard to order anything else on the menu. I did try the Mango Curry which I ate in Hua Hin. I’m a repeat customer.

Edited review : never had a problem before with south side Thai but I recently ordered a pad Thai and was disappointed. I don't know if they ran out of the flat noodles but they were made with a different kind of rice noodle (round). But it was more than just the wrong noodle, the overall taste of the dish was just not the same. My husband enjoyed his basil rice very much. And the curry puffs were ok, I'd prefer more veggies inside. I was not a fan of the duck fat being uncooked, prefer it crispy, so if I order again I will specify to have crispy fat or just not get duck.

Original review: This was our first time trying South Side Thai, and we are glad we ordered. My husband and I both got paid Thai, we ordered them how we wanted and they not only did they accommodate our requests but they tasted delicious 😋. I also wanted to try the dumplings, which were so fresh and also very tasty. We were trying to find a new place for pad Thai because the last couple places we have been to were less than impressive we will definitely order again from South Side Thai and can't wait to try some different items int he menu!

Highly recommend. I've had Thai food in surrounding towns, but this is by far the best. From the very polite person on the phone who took my order, to the great food, everything was excellent. Gyozas,crab Rangoon, and fried basil rice are top notch!

Food was excellent (peanut curry, chicken satay, pho beef noodle soup), as was the service. There's a new menu with more and different choices such as peanut curry and mango curry. We are going back to try more of the new dishes. This updated restaurant is a great addition to the Wallingford dining scene.

We loved the appetizers and dishes we ordered, they all passed our palate test. The prices are reasonable, and the selection is wide. The restaurant is clean and has a cozy, homey feel. The staff and owners are warm and attentive, willing to adjust the food to suit your taste preferences, whether you like it spicy, mild, or not spicy at all. I ordered from here multiple times, today specifically I ordered 3 orders of chicken satay. I opened my food when I got home and noticed that the portion size had been reduced. I immediately called the restaurant and was transferred to the cook, which is the owner I explained that there had to be something wrong because the portion size was so much less. He informed me that he had to cut the chicken because he doesn’t keep profits? I asked him Who keeps the profits then? I paid you and you gave me way less food and didn’t tell Me anything about reduced portion sizes. He had taken 1 previous portion size and cut to make into 3 portion sizes. My pinky is bigger than the portion given. I think for this inconvenience you should give me at least one order refund he responded by saying you give me chicken back I resell and give your Money back. WHAT??? I asked. That’s disgusting and completely unacceptable. Will inform local health department and the FDA! I will also let everyone know not to visit this restaurant that’s resells food! So NASTY with exceptionally Poor customer service! Yuck!!

I ordered, via Uber eats, the Southside Pho with duck, seafood combo and vegetables. Wow! The broth is so authentic! The duck had crispy skin, the scallop was U12, the shrimp was easily U16, and there were 4! The calamari was beautiful, and fresh, crispy veggies:carrot, broccoli, snap peas, mushrooms, bean sprouts. Simply superb!! I asked for extra bean sprouts and Thai basil. Ordered their homemade garlic chili oil and lime on the side. This was wonderful! Now my go to for Pho, and I work in New Haven, so there are plenty of Pho options, but no competition/comparison...well done South Side Thai, well done! I'll be back!!

I couldn’t tell from the outside when I arrived here today, the restaurant was very cozy and clean - well ventilated.
Three of us ordered coconut shrimp to share, one not spicy pad thai with shrimp, spicy beef pad thai, and chicken drunken noodle. I tried all the dish- and they were good. Very strong flavor in the spicy beef pad thai and drunken noodle but the regular shrimp pad thai was a bit too sweet in my taste.
Coconut shrimp was delicious! The shrimps were cooked perfectly. It was fresh and the texture was delightful.
Drunken noodle was interesting. It had a strong flavor! What intrigued me was the hot basil sauce they used in the dish. I enjoyed this dish but it was different from what I’m used to. It just had a strong soy sauce note which I didn’t mind !
Beef pad thai looked really good and we could tell the beef wasn’t overcooked and it was perfect for my hubby as he likes his beef abit undercooked.
Overall, I’m glad we tried this place and if I lived in the neighborhood this place would have been my go-to thai spot!

Darn the owners changed and so did the food. My pad Thai had broken noodles so that when you picked it up, they were 2-3 inches. It was gelatinous, maybe it was because the noodles were overcooked. I didn’t eat it. They offered to make it again but I declined. They kept it on the bill but it was fine since I wasn’t going back. The tofu basil was better but I probably will not go again. The service on the otherhand is much better than the previous owners. I haven’t been in this part of town for a year and didn’t realize it had new owners.

Update- I would have eaten the pad Thai if it was any good. I eat alone all the time . I didn't tip because I told her that you shouldn't charge for a terrible dish and that you should pay her for the dish I paid.
Wallingford might not be a cosmopolitan of a town but people here have good taste- they know when something taste good /authentic. The previous owners made authentic Thai that was delicious. They brought me Thai chilis in fish sauce, your restaurant doesn't even have that anymore.
Cooking pad Thai noodles should have been easy. I was the only one in your restaurant. I was so looking forward to it since I had moved and missed the food. But it was a huge disappointment and your place is like most Thai restaurants now - mediocre.
Don’t accuse me of being full. If the food is good, people take it to go. I ate just the tofu from the basil dish which was more just brown sauce and I was trying to figure out what was wrong with the pad Thai. When noodles are over cooked and broken, perhaps, you kitchen might want to consider why that happened.
Make tastier food and you won’t have a person who loved this place complain and vow not to e er go back.
If you want to be defensive, fight back by making tastier food.
By the way, I waited for the wait staff to come get my check and finally walked up and paid at the register. So, you guys are friendlier when I entered, that doesn't mean the service was great. In the first post, I was trying to say something positive but it wasn't deserved. I hope you take this opportunity to visit some other Thai restaurants in New Haven and see why your food isn’t great.

Overall their food is good Thai food. The veggie and tofu drunken noodle only had 3 pieces of tofu in it. The chicken drunken noodle had a good amount of chicken in it. Their soups were flavorful but the broth was thinner than other restaurants we’ve been to.

Just had a lovely dinner! The service was great and all in our party were pleased with the extensive menu and their choices. We will be back!

The pad thai had no sweet component whatsoever, and there was no lime wedge. These are standard ingredients. Also, there were barely any scallions. I had to forego eating until a later time since it tasted like just cooking oil and some spice which I requested. I had to add some brown sugar and lime juice which solved the problem, in terms of being able to actually eat it. Be prepared for the food to be underwhelming.

This was my first time experiencing Thai food. The service was amazing, we were greeted right away and seated. The decor was peaceful and relaxing the waterfall is a nice touch. The food was extremely tasteful. The flavors came through and could be tasted in each bite. I had the shrimp rice. The amount of shrimp in the meal was more than I could have ever expected. I was most surprised at the pricing, it was less than I could have expected. All the items on the menu was very reasonably priced.

South Side Thai is a gem of a Thai restaurant! I am a vegetarian and eat Thai food very often; this was amongst the best that I've had!

I went in on a Thursday for lunch. I ordered the veggie summer rolls (appetizer), a green curry with vegetables and tofu (lunch), and the mango with sticky rice (dessert).

The summer rolls were perfection; they were filled with fresh, crisp vegetables, and the peanut sauce was perfect in consistency and flavor. They also sliced the rolls up, like little sushi pieces, which I found much more enjoyable than the whole rolls!

The green curry was, again, spot on. The vegetables were very fresh, not over cooked, and plentiful. The tofu was lightly fried, and cooked perfectly. I ordered medium spice, and it was just enough to give me the sniffles (not too hot, or too mild). For reference, I have a high tolerance for spice, and enjoyed it.

The mango with sticky rice was also perfection. The mango was perfectly ripe, sweet, and fresh. The rice had the right amount of coconut cream poured over it.

The service was very fast, and overall excellent. The waitress was polite and attentive.

The atmosphere was very well done. There was a cascading water decoration on one wall, and a large fish tank on another wall. The place was clean, airy, and comfortable. The bathroom was super clean.

Overall, I highly recommend this place if you like Thai food, or if you are interested in trying Thai food (you should)! My only complaint is that it is located 30 miles from my house! 😂 Even so, I will definitely be going back! 😆 Great job!

The Golden Bag, appetizer (chicken in a fried wonton) was surprisingly light. It was perfect - very flavorful and it came out crispy, with no grease.

The Pad Thai chicken was stellar. Huge portion that made a second meal. Everything was fresh and the service was great.

This restaurant is a hidden gem. The food is outstanding!!! They are under new owners. I am a total foodie and was blown away. Finally great Thai in Wallingford. We had the crispy calamari appetizer because we read a review that highly recommend it and we loved it. The calamari was tender with a delicate crispy coating, and it came with 2 delicious dipping sauces. I couldn’t decide which sauce I loved more. The drunken noodle with beef was excellent and my pineapple fried rice with shrimp was perfect. Good portions and reasonable prices. I will be their new regular customer!

I ate my lunch at this place when I was in Wallingford for work. The guy was about to close at the time but still let me in. I would say this is one of, if not, the best Thai restaurant I have ever been.

We were in the mood for Thai food tonight and this ABSOLUTELY hit the spot! This was our first time here and all I could think was "what took me so long to try this place?!" We ordered a few appetizers..Chicken Satay & the Calamari...both were awesome but the Calamari was a showstopper. The creamy sauce it came with is 5 stars on it's own but pair it with the perfectly fried crispy calamari and we were in heaven...if I could give it 10 stars on here I would. The Pad Thai was also SO good, such a generous portion...and with the side of peanut sauce I ordered...PERFECT. I forgot what dish my husband ordered but the little bite he shared before stuffing his face was delicious. Everything was great! I can't wait till the next time we order to try more!

Amazing place. I had a birthday celebration there with six of my friends and it was a great time! The owner and her staff were so friendly and accommodating. But, the best part was the delicious food!! My friends are seasoned Thai food eaters and they were impressed! We all loved everything that we ordered and we ordered a lot lol! I had crab rangoons (x2) and the teriyaki salmon and loved every bite. We will definitely be back!!

Great food and service. We had the Thai Calamari(my fave), Crab Rangoons and Coconut Shrimp apps. For dinner it was Drunken Noodles w/ Pork and Cashew Nut w/Shrimp. Fantastic! Even had dessert. Fried Banana's w/Ice Cream and Thai Pumpkin Custard. You have to try it!

Excellent Restaurant, great place to take family and friends. The staff is incredibly friendly. It's the best Thai place around, I have eaten there multiple times over the past couple of months and each time was fantastic. The basil fried rice and drunken noodles are my personal favorites!

This little restaurant is a hidden gem off the beaten path. Probably the best Thai food I have ever had. Our favorites were the crab rangoon, salad with extra ginger dressing and the red curry chicken with peanut sauce on top!

Nice atmosphere, good food

Loved the place ! A bit pricey but worth visiting and trying their menu. Waitress was very nice, environment was nice and clean. The only downside of this place is that it's located a bit off hand ... Overall: great place for lunch.

Got takeout for first time. Pad thai with duck was amazing and full of flavor. Coconut shrimp was tasty too. Will return.

This restaurant is the reason why I fell in love with Drunken Noodles! Tried various restaurants and the standard to go by is from going to this particular Thai location. Super nice workers, one in particular is named Sarah! Would recommend this to anyone looking to try something different.

Fantastic service, even better food. I judge a Thai restaurant by their curry, drunken noodles, and any soup. If those 3 things are homeruns then it's a winner. It's very cute inside and very clean. Excellent ambiance. Seriously 10 out of 10. I will definitely be back!

This is our favorite Thai place in the area. It's reasonably priced and the curries are fantastic. I love the yellow curry with extra spice added. It is so flavourful and the pineapples are melt in your mouth! The pad thai is also fantastic and the Thai iced tea is always tasty. Dine-in is better than takeout in our opinion. There have been a few dishes we weren't crazy about but it just came down to personal preference.

Food is ok. Had better for the price. I like Thai food and since it was close I tried it. Had the pai thai. Ok. I will try again with something else, maybe it will be better tasting.

I wish this place was more consistent. It was consistent with previous owners. Always order the same thing. Chicken drunken rice. After new owner bought restaurant, it wasn’t the same drunken rice so I stopped going there. Then I tried it again and it was delicious. I went today and it was not delicious. Chicken tasted dry, maybe previously cooked, rice wasn’t the same either. I won’t be going again anytime soon. Being Consistent is key...

Delicious red curry with just the right amount of zingy spice, "golden bag" is not an exaggeration, crunchy chicken dangerously tasty. First time trying their food, it'll be far from the last.

Food quality went down drastically after the old owners sold the place

This used to be my absolute favorite Thai restaurant, and I used to refuse to eat anywhere else, but ever since the new owners came in it hasn’t been the same. The food is decently good, but it’s not as great as it used to be. The previous owner apparently sold the restaurant along with her recipes, and even though they have the same menu items, you can most definitely tell that the recipes have been altered. The crab rangoons aren’t as sweet as they used to be, and the last time I ordered them they were almost burnt. Now they put an overwhelming amount of scallions which the previous ones used to not have at all, and if they did you most definitely couldn’t taste them. Their Kaw Soi isn’t as good either, and their drunken noodles look completely different. I think they should’ve just changed the name of the restaurant and come up with their own menu because they’re trying to make it seem that it’s as good as it’s always been, but unfortunately they don’t measure up. I might eat here again, but I’m definitely going to keep looking for a better Thai restaurant.

This was my first and only place to get thai food. Ive tried other places and no one compared to south side thai. The owner even kept the place open for me to pick up my food when i was running late! Also try the thai tea, its really good.

Tonight's order of fresh vegetable rolls and chicken larb salad was very disappointing. The new owners have raised the prices and cut back the portions. My fresh vegetable rolls used to be 2 rolls. I got just one and got charged $8.00! My salad was stretched so thin in the take out container that all you saw was the bottom of the container. The little chicken salad wasn$10.00. I tried calling back and they are closed. I will not be eating here again. I miss the former owners.

The restaurant has been sold. There is no comparison to the original; poor service and mediocre food. If you were a regular, try it once. You will not be back.
