Strip-mall stop with a wall mural offering Thai classics such as tom ka soup, curries & vegetables.
Beautiful restaurant. Decorated the old-style way of Thailand. A nice menu with easy understandable English descriptions of the food along with good pictures, always a help especially when unfamiliar with a particular exotic dish.
The Thai Singha beers (pronounced “Beer Sing”) are 7 dollars each, served in a can along with a tall cold glass and brought to your table, however you must open and pour it yourself. It felt a little casual considering the beautiful restaurant environment. Lol.
We noticed a lot of take-out food that the staff were bringing to the front of the restaurant for customers to pick up. The restaurant prepares the packaging well, in nice reusable plastic rectangular containers, stacked in a sturdy paper bag.
Food:
I try not to leave negative reviews. I want every establishment to thrive, do well, my reviews are not meant to be unkind. This is my opinion of what we experienced. Having lived full time in Thailand for many years, perhaps my standards are different, yet that should not be an excuse. Good food, even if not authentic, is still "good food" and deserves to be celebrated. There are good Thai restaurants in San Diego that serve near authentic Thai cuisine. My wife is (from Chiang Mai) we enjoy seeking new Asian places to eat. Similan's food didn't work for us. At least on this night it wasn't what we expected. The drunken noodles (a favorite of mine) were soggy cut in tiny pieces, as if stir fried roughly, the sauce the noodles were cooked in tasted the same as the ผัดกะเพราหมู Padt Gapow Moo, “stir fried pork.” I ordered a fried egg (common practice) to go on top, the staff acknowledged my order but didn't bring it. There was something odd about the meat in all the dishes, we were not sure exactly about the texture and taste, but the meat was rubbery and identical in taste to each other . The pork and chicken were indistinguishable from one another. I did not want to eat the meat in any of the dishes, that's saying a lot because I love meat. The green curry แกงเขียวหวาน was okay but not as flavorful as one would expect. One couldn’t help but notice a taste similarity in our three dishes, is it the same sauce? This may not be important: it's something unusual I noticed. As a cultural rule, Thai people pride their country on having the best rice in the world, called "Cow Hom Mali" ข้าวหอมมะลิ “Fragrant Jasmine Rice.” The rice we were served (sorry) didn't taste like Thai Rice. It was dry and not the same quality, as if scooped from the the bottom of a rice maker that was left on for a long time. There wasn't the sense of pride one expects when being served the 'staple food' as important as Thailand grown rice.
To be fair, this restaurant is busy with take out, and for a Monday night, there were 4 tables with customers that were enjoying their food. I did not see any Thai people here, always a good indication of authenticity, but it may not have been a good night for dining out either.
That they are busy with the dining room and take out, makes this review counter to reality, yet I had to be truthful of what we experienced. Go see for yourself.
We dined in there for a party of three and the food was outstanding. The portion is very generous as you can see in the pictures and the taste is great for all dishes we ordered. Similan Thai restaurant may not be the most authentic Thai restaurant, but it has a lot to offer! I can say it is one of the best Thai restaurants in the area
Nice Thai place, good location, good parking space (store front). Tried noodle, curry, and specialty dishes. Generally well cooked, full of flavor, okay portion. I'd like to see more fresh seafood ingredients for the specialty dish, but can't complain per inflation... Not a perfect spot, but can't go wrong for sure.
It was a nice place and a nice meal.
I came on a Saturday night around 9pm.
The place was really relaxed but not nessesarily empty.
The food came out quickly and tasted wonderful. I had Pad Thai with a side of steamed rice.
The pad Thai was sweet, though I can imagine someone might want spicier.
Pork Padthai was really good, flavorful and nicely cooked.
The host and waiter were awesome too! Very polite and courteous.
I enjoyed the place and hope to come back to try the rest of the menu.
An expensive experience.
The money bag appetizer was avg for a $12 appetizer. I wouldn’t get that again.
The ice tea was $4.50!
I ordered spicy panang curry and got mild curry. The spice tray helped. The unseasoned meat was tender, the sauce was creamy and savory.
The service was good, the place was empty when I sat down.
This is one of the best local restaurants I visit when I want authentic Thai food. It is a cozy place, has a reasonable price, and the portion is plentiful. The meals are prepared fresh and hot. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and helpful. The parking is tricky to get to, but it's worthwhile. I genuinely enjoy eating my lunches or dinners there. This place is somewhat of a hidden gem. The food is that good.
Went to have lunch today. waitress force customer to give tip. when give small tip, she told me to never come here again. very rude!!
Very RUDE service.
Bad experience today.
Just went in to order few drinks, thai teas, around 2pm on a Friday, and the server didn’t welcome / smile at us. Restaurant looks very nice, but don’t know if we’ll go back due to customer service.
Great food and very friendly staff. I we definitely be returning.
Green curry was fantastic
Very delicious high quality Thai Food in comfortable surroundings. At good price. Highest recommendation.
The food was very tasty- I had the green curry salmon and the fish was done just right and was moist inside with a perfect crust and char on the outside.
Was incredible came here cause of some TikToks I saw and it was amazing loved it! Great customer service too ❤️❤️
Been on a multi year journey to find the best tasting Thai food in San Diego, AND THIS IS IT!!!
We had the Pad Kee Mao with beef(drunken noodles) and Panang Curry with chicken and every single bite was absolutely delicious. It was the kind of Thai food that you can’t stop eating and loving every second of it haha.
I already can’t wait to go back!
Food was good. Service was bad. The server act like you’re not welcome at the place. Really weird.
Waited over a half hour for a pickup order after I was told it would be ready, and not a single person working in the restaurant ever came to the front. Half a dozen other people were also waiting on their food and never got helped. I canceled my order and left. The food might be good, but I have no way of knowing.

Chicken pad Thai gave me food poisoning
Excellent quality, consistent neighborhood Thai. Staff are friendly, ambience is low-key and food is always good. Nothing is oversalted or excessively sweet, and the curries have great depth of flavor.
We eat here twice a month at least and have never had a bad meal, which is more than I can say of Solana Beach’s other Thai restaurant. There is no comparison. Hats off to the team at Similan.
Ordered pad Thai for take out and it’s the best place we’ve had in SD thus far. Healthy portions, includes tofu in it (pleasant surprise), and nice friendly staff. Will def go again
Fabulous food. Easy parking and great staff.
All the food was so so good, workers were really nice and helpful, and the place is cute inside. 10/10 for everythingg
The food was very good and reasonably priced. The lunch special meal was $15 and it came with a large portion as well as soup and salad. The waiter was also very nice and everything came out quickly. The dining area and the bathrooms were also very clean. I really enjoyed eating here and I would definitely come again ☺️
Great little Thai food place. Really tasty and all the people working there are extremely happy. I recommend their cashew nuts and fried rice. I order almost every week to my house. They also have an amazing - well portioned lunch special that I go every other week.
Excellent and authentic Thai food. Some of the best I’ve had outside of Thailand.
Beautiful restaurant. Decorated the old-style way of Thailand. A nice menu with easy understandable English descriptions of the food along with good pictures, always a help especially when unfamiliar with a particular exotic dish.

I ordered the mango sticky rice and the cashew nuts shrimp spice level 5! Highly recommend 🍤
Stopped in for lunch while on vacation. What a treat. Lunch specials were awesome, Tom Kha soup delicious and also enjoyed some Thai tea that was not overly sweet and mango sticky rice which was perfect. We eat Thai a lot and this place is top notch for both food and service.
Really authentic Thai food, just amazing! Also a lot of vegetarian options
Great food! And incredible service.
I tried spice Bamboo...really good..it is big plate and really spicy
Excellent food, small but superb wine list,
lovely staff and beautiful decor, so all added up to a superb dining experience.

I'd like to see more fresh seafood ingredients for the specialty dish, but can't complain per inflation... Not a perfect spot, but can't go wrong for sure.
Good lunch specials. I've had better, but overall a good experience
This is our favorite Thai place, we have been coming to this eatery for a long time. However , last night we were disappointed because our order didn't come as we ordered. The tea was lukewarm, and it had to be returned for a hot pot. I ordered salmon something and specifically said mild heat, it was . spicy, I ate it and it was deliciously prepared. My husband ordered sweet and sour shrimp. Again, it wasn't hot so it has to be sent back. It took a while before the food was delivered. My husband requested to put in the microwave for 30 seconds. However I believe the dish was prepared fresh again. Overall, we love and enjoy this place and would highly recommend it
The fresh Thai rolls are fantastic the best I’ve tasted in San Diego !
delicious chicken pad Thai for $16. I have no qualms with this restaurant in the atmosphere waiters food appetizers service everything amazing
Awesome Thai restaurant tucked away in a small strip mall. Great food, the Pad Thai was delicious, best I've had in a while. Can't wait to go back again.
I'm not even gon lie the food is good y'all keep delivering
Exceptional and unassuming
It was a nice place and a nice meal.
I came on a Saturday night around 9pm.

Pork Padthai was really good, flavorful and nicely cooked.
The host and waiter were awesome too! Very polite and courteous.
I enjoyed the place and hope to come back to try the rest of the menu.
Decent Thai food, but nothing that will blow you away. Can be a little hit and miss. Generally, I'll do takeout - and the food is at least always prepared to order, and timely.
Good place to eat at when going to the Belly Up!!
I used to love this restaurant. Now when we call to order they hang up and leave the phone off the hook. So sad because we try to support our local restaurants.
They don’t have the money bags anymore but the platter is still worth it. The larb and the green curry were also delicious.
Best Thai Green Curry around 😋 recommend the Special- Spicy Basil Seafood and the service is amazing .
Great Thai food
Excellent food and service.
This was my first visit to this place I ordered take out and paid for it ahead of time. The online menu did not have any information about what is in the food or size/quantity. It does however allow you to choose spice and make additions after adding to the cart. The food was supposed to be ready in 55 or 60 minutes and when I arrived to pick up it was ready. The parking lot is easy to miss and the place inside was tiny with a few tables and appeared casual and very clean. I ordered a light meal of of Tom Kha, one order of sticky rice and one spring rolls.Everything was packed well and nothing leaked before arriving home. My Family loves Tom Kha but this wasn't even close to that wonderful creamy coconut and lemon grass soup we were craving, this stuff was a thin salty brine with cabbage. The sticky rice was a bit overly sweetened for me but one of us liked it alright. This place has received stellar reviews so maybe this was a one off , It was edible not totally gross, We liked the lettuce rolls, but I don't think we will return to try any of their specialty dishes. I wouldn't say the best value- Two quarts of Thom Kha, 1 order of mango sticky rice (about 1 cup of rice on top half of a mango) and 1 order of lettuce tofu rolls (I got 4rolls) and a few ounces of dipping sauces, $60 bucks.
My go-to for Thai takeout around Del Mar. Prices are very good, the wait time is never too long, and the owners are very sweet.
This place is absolutely freaking fantastic! Excellent food, excellent service and the atmosphere is very calm and welcoming. I ordered the Pan See Ew with chicken and my husband had the Spicy Fried Rice with pork. Very tasty and satisfied with both meals. It was also my first time having a Thai Tea and that was excellent too! We will definitely go back next time we are visiting!
Grsat similan
I love Similan! The food is always delicious. The service is friendly and prompt. There are several vegan and vegetarian options as well. Check out their incredible weekday lunch specials! See you guys soon!
First visit and I'll be back for sure! Had green curry lunch special with chicken. Chicken was very tender and heat level was perfect. Excellent brown rice as well. Service was outstanding.
Wonderfully cozy atmosphere and delicious food
Phad kee Mao noodles is of average. The vegetables that came with it has a bitter taste and doesn’t blend well with the dish. Usually broccoli is added but there isn’t any, so does tomato. Fried tofu is good but the noodles seems to be under-seasoned. Overall, the noodles has a slightly charred taste, which is the soul of Phad kee mao. But the rest needs more work.
Most of the time the food is 4 stars but sometimes it's 3 stars.
The service is normally 3 stars but sometimes it can be 4 stars. When they are very busy you will wait a good amount of time.
The prices are quite reasonable except for a pot of tea which is ridiculous at $5. And it is fairly weak and almost tasteless.
The atmosphere is just so-so.
I recommend it for the food but don't expect great service or atmosphere.
Girl in the front was extremely rude. Then asked our party of 2 to wait outside when there was room for us to sit inside. Never returning and would not recommend.
Oh yum. Best plate of pad ki mao I've had in a very long time. Not greasy and fresh, balanced flavours. Medium spicy still has me crying and blowing my nose. Impeccably clean. Sweet staff. Amazed this place wasn't absolutely packed. I'll be back!
(Edit: apparently this has been sitting in my drafts for months! So glad I just saw it to post!)
Some of the food was great the salad was excellent but do not get Brown rice it to Tough to eat and the beef taste fishy 😕
The restaurant smelled like wet dog. We walked out.
This place was delicious. So nice, so delish. We got two entrees. The yellow curry was delicious. Cameron says that its the best curry she's ever tried. And i have tried so many curries i would have to say it's def top 3.
The waitress i definetly forgot to ask her name but she was extremely nice and so kind.
The music they played was soft covers of popular pop punk rock alternative sounds. It was so good and so funny. We didn't finish the food and took some home. Cameron had it for breakfast today.
Would 100% recommend and will most def come back. Its a nice area close to the beach too. looks like an older community lives here and it's in close proximity to breweries and shopping places. I think there is shrimp close by
Romantic place for sure too, seeing your lover with the backdrop of this place is definetly heart bouncing
Very authentic and yummy 🤤
Place smells like wet dog when you walk in, I immediately left because I do not want to know what their food tastes or smells like after having my nose bombarded and appetite ripped from me so quick.
Great Thai food for a great price too. My friends and I come here for lunch often and have never been disappointed! Highly recommend!
We ordered an assortment of dishes for takeout: Tom Yum, Panang with beef, pineapple fried rice, drunken noodles, and eggplant with chicken. Everything was outstanding. The spice levels were just right. If you order takeout, be patient. It took about 20 minutes longer than they originally told me, but the wait was worth it.
This is the best Thai restaurant I have ever had between northern California and southern California. I could eat this everyday. I have eaten in several times and just picked up take out if I'm driving by the area. The pad Thai is amazing and it's ruined me for any other Thai restaurant. The only place better than this that I've found so far is not in the United States.
This is a small restaurant in a strip mall. The food and service were great.
Good food & services. Tom Kha soup ($12.95) was good & flavorful, but a bit too salty for me. Pineapple fried rice ($21.95) was excellent with huge serving and plenty of big shrimps & chicken. Pad See Eu ($17.95) was good & flavorful with plenty of shrimps, but I would like more eggs and less sweet. Overall, a good experience.
I did not enjoy my meal at Similan. Bland and tasteless...which is pretty difficult for Thai food. I ordered basic dishes...drunken noodles and crispy spring roles. Not very good.
Good solid thai
I give it 4.5 stars. I haven't had Thai food this good in a while.
I walked in at about 40 minutes before they closed, I was seated and served fast. I ordered the Spicy Fried Rice, extra spicy, and a Thai iced tea.
Delicious.
We are so glad to find this Thai restaurant in the area. They are the sister restaurant of Star Anise in La Jolla which we go there all the time too. Everything is so delicious and authentic.
A real gem in Solana Beach with great flavors and great presentations. Highly recommend.
Organized, incredibly clean space and the food absolutely hit the spot. Loved visiting!
This is very good thai food. They have messed up our order a few times but are always great at customer service and remedying the situation. We have found that for some reason the food tastes better on certain days than on others. I would recommend Wednesday through Saturday for some reason it just is different.
I wish they were a little more accommodating to vegetarians. If I don't want meat and egg but I want vegetables and tofu why should I be charged extra? Seems like a little backwards to me.
It is definitely the best thai food in the area though
This is my go-to place for Thai since they can make certain dishes vegan (no fish or oyster sauce). They are always nice on the phone even when they are busy.
I recently placed a pickup order while I had covid. When I get home, I find they gave me a little extra something and on the box it said "Get well soon". How thoughtful of them. It made my night because I was feeling pretty lousy. Thank you guys.
Awesome food and good portion size….great flat noodles and vegan curries!!kid friendly and helpful staff…would def. recommend this place and will def. visit again!
First time coming in - and I do not regret it one bit. I will certainly be back and bringing clients here as well!
Don't let the exterior fool you! Behind the rather humble strip mall facade, you will find a charming little restaurant. When we arrived, there were 5 people in line to pick up their carry out. Promising! As we entered, we encountered a tasteful interior decor. The noise level is well controlled. The light level is relatively low. Service was efficient and very friendly. The dishes were well seasoned and spiciness levels matched our expectations. The Thai iced tea was thankfully not quite as sweet as at some other restaurants. Overall, this is a great place to go to for a last minute dinner before a concert at the Belly Up or a nice romantic date. It only seats an estimated 30 guests, so it may not be the best choice for a very large party.
They don't have staff to run the place, unless you're going at a really odd hour or have plenty of time to sit around - avoid.
This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in all of San Diego, having been to many of them. Great Panang curry, Thai fried rice, and pad see ew. Usually order take out but a nice place to eat inside as well.
The atmosphere of this place is welcoming. The food is delicious and great portions. The staff was excellent.
I'll be back for sure.
Excellent Thai food and service. The Pad Thai was fantastic as as the mixed veggies with peanut sauce.
Very expensive, and no, this is not because of the location, it's more expensive than other Thai restaurants in the area. We ordered a takeout. I asked them twice to leave two ingredients out of one of the dishes, they seemed to write it down - nope, the ingredients were there. They also neither mentioned in the menu or by phone that the same dish was spicy, nor asked me how spicy I wanted it. The menu didn't even mention the chili flakes that were all over. The food was bearable.
Great tom ka soup, good pad se ew, good pad thai. I would recommend if you're in the area.
so sweet
Price is a bit high, but it’s due to the area, Spicy pad thai is actually spicy!
The food here tastes amazing! I have tried the pad thai and some other noodle and fried rice dishes, for takeout due to the pandemic, and they were all great. The pad thai here is one of the best I have ever had anywhere, and this is now our go-to Thai restaurant in the San Diego area.
Absolutely delicious Thai food, some of the best I’ve tried in the Del Mar-Solana Beach-Encinitas area.
Green curry in particular is fantastic.
Good food and nice quiet fun
Wow, what a great meal we had from Similan Thai restaurant. All the dishes we ordered were delicious and fresh, from Pad Thai to the yellow curry and crying tiger dish. The Papaya salad dish was also very tasty. Even though there are several Thai restaurants closer to my house but this one is definitely my favorite.
A wonderful neighborhood restaurant with very fresh, delicious, and lovely plated food. Very nice deco too. Lots of take out biz these days
Great food as always, wine list not so good
Great service and food!
great pad thai and curry fried rice. friendly staff and super safe takeout options.
Everything is so good! Recommend the Tom Kha and Roast Duck dish has lychee
Found Similan Thai while staying nearby, and I’m so happy we did. The food was delicious! The customer service was great. We will definitely be getting food here again the next time we’re in town.
This is literally the best Thai food I’ve ever had. And I lived in Thailand for a year! Our leftovers stayed fresh for days. Everyone that works there is friendly. 10/10 amazing.
Order extra spicy and you will be “enjoying” that fire again within an hour, I can promise you that.
Above average Thai food you can really love. Their take out during COVID is a Godsend- and everyone is professional and kind. The food never disappoints!
My favorite Thai restaurant by far. Whoever is cooking is an excellent chef, the noodles are always cooked perfectly.
Great, authentic Thai food! Fresh ingredients and well-prepared. A very positive take-out experience.
The food is really good😋 and fresh, I jush the wait was not 15 minutes but I am just being picky....lol 😆
That yellow curry though 🙌🏽
Edit 17/12/2020
Woman things are crippling my body. It’s a Friday night. I can’t move. I don’t want anything other than this delicious food and for some unholy reason this place is closed, which is quite unusual at 6:45pm. I don’t know why it’s closed but my only hope is that nothing tragic happened. Can I emotionally handle the only amazing Thai place/restaurant in general in Del Mar being closed? Not right now, no. I guess I’ll starve tonight.
It was ok. I've had better. Still looking for a good Thai place.
Six+ time returning customer is testament to their delicious food, but tonight we placed online order at 6:05, and it's now 7:45 and our food has still not arrived. Disappointed.
Wow! Absolutely delicious food and great customer service. If I could give more then a 5 I'd give it a 10 star rating! Amazed by how delicious the food is here. 👌
Took our a few dishes. Speedy service and great food.
Awesome flavor, good heat and good quality food. Employees have all been really nice as well. This is my go to thai spot in Solana Beach.
This is a fabulous restaurant. We have been at least about ten times in the last few years, and we are very experienced with Thai Food for over three+ decades. Everything we have ordered has been perfect. The decor lovely and the staff are equally lovely. They will adjust spicing and ingredients to your wish if you ask, and they will precisely follow your requests. The take-out during covid shutdown has been spectacular. I will add that portion size is on the slim-to-normal size, which if you are looking for more typical huge sizes might put you off a bit at first. Until you try it.
Food was good
Delicious!
I love Thai food and am new to the area I always get shrimp Pai Thai it’s my go to.. I called to order I should have noticed that over the phone they didn’t ask me how spicy I wanted my food I do like spice in my food I didn’t pay attention to that once receiving my food I realized that there is no spice to it it did taste very bland it wasn’t too bad but I’ve definitely had better and I will not be going back to this place they did have good customer service.
This is hands-down the best Thai food I've ever had. The refinement of the cooking is extraordinary
Best Thai Food! I've been on the hunt for good Thai food in the area and I'm so happy I found this place! The service was amazing and I highly recommend. I got red curry tofu and pad Thai chicken. My only complainer is that I asked for it extra spicy and there was no spice. Still very flavorful though
We ordered via Google Maps (Chownow), so the ordering process was super easy and tracked by Google Assistance!
Once ordered, we went to pick up and the food was ready 5 mins before expected. They practice social distancing and use protective gear while handling food.
We ordered potstickers, basil fried rice, panang curry, cashew veg and pad Thai noodles. Potstickers were extremely delicious and rest of the food was equally flavorful as well.... Highly recommend !
In an effort to support local businesses we ordered out. The food was not even started when we arrived. It took another 30 minutes. We ate Mothers day dinner at 9:15 pm. The food was mostly ok but the Tom Yum soup was not edible as it had a horrible stench.
This place is the bomb. Favorite Thai place I've found in North County.
Best thai place around
One of the best Thai restaurants in Southern California and trust me I’v tried almost all of them.
I love Thai food and my expectations were so high for this establishment. Maybe it's a nice area and prices are higher, but felt the food could have been better or was boring. I ordered the crying tiger- cut up steak which is supposed to have a red center, but was almost well done, with papaya salad and sticky rice. It was just okay. Not the best, not worst, but for the price should have been the best. My fiance ordered the duck curry, and it was good. Will not be back as there are other places that are a lot better.
Cosy, good food. Rarely have to wait for table.
1 of the best Thai places in Solana Beach
Very delicious food and friendly staff. I don't normally get pad Thai but this is definitely one of the better pad Thai meals I have had at a Thai restaurant.
Had lunch today and it was Shrimp Pad Thai for me. I have enough for another whole meal. The best Pad Thai for flavor and texture. Yummy! They do have reasonable lunch specials as well. Parking is small lot and I suggest making a reservation. Mine was 12:30, every seat was filled, and my table was waiting for me. Good experience at Similan.
We were in town for a beach day to celebrate our daughter's 9th birthday. She requested Thai food for dinner. This popped up as being one of a few Thai restaurants on our proximity so we crossed our fingers and headed over. It was a great experience overall. The foods was great! We ordered Yellow Curry, Pad Thai and Cashew Nut with veggies.
Very good flavors and good ingredients. Service can be a little better. But still, one of the best Thai places you can find in San Diego.
Great service & food was delicious.
Best Thai food EVER!!!
The food was Awesome and the waiter was very friendly
I lost my cup in this restaurant and when I call them to asking. The person who pick up the phone is very unlikely and unfriendly. I do understanding they are not speaking good English but at least need listen what customer say. I will never come to this restaurant for any food again.
Nice little restaurant tucked away in the corner of a strip mall along Lomas Santa Fe. I had the Panang Curry with chicken for lunch and it was very good, with just the right portion size.
Great Thai food
Fantastic food!
We seriously lucked out with finding this Thai gem on the google! The is one of the best Thai restaurants I’ve been to - authentic dishes, reasonable priced, big portions, wonderful service, and beautiful decor. My favorite dishes were the crab pad thai and the tom kha soup! I’m excited to return and try their other dishes!
Side note: parking lot is super small but there’s plenty of street parking across the street. The restaurant also takes reservations!
Excellent
I love Thai and have been to a lot of Thai restaurants in the San Diego area. This was one of the better ones if not the best. I had the duck and it was cooked perfectly. Definitely worth a taste.
