Hostess was not very friendly, asked us what we wanted to drink and then completely forgot about it. Service is pretty slow, empty dishes staying on the table for a while. Our server was quite friendly and so was what looked like the manager.

Was thinking of ordering the tasting menu but the intial service deterred me from ordering that. I think overall for a 1 michellin star restaurant I had some pretty high expectations. I'm really surprised it has a Michelin star.

Mushroom appetizer was pretty good, not mind blowing but pretty tasty.

noodle dish was pretty good, but pretty salty.

black rice pudding is good very interesting.

Khao kan jin:
This dish depends on how you feel about cilantro; we liked cilantro so we liked this dish. Surprisingly light. The sausage is not oily nor heavy, and the crispiness of the dish makes it feel very airy. It doesn’t look like an appetizer, but it is. Chilis are on the side so you can choose your spice level.

Pork belly:
Super melty! Sweetness helps counterbalance the fattiness of the pork. We recommend getting the plain rice to pair with this.

Yaowaraj noodles:
Very interesting and great mix of textures, from the squishiness of the noodles to the slightly firmer but tender chicken, to the crunch of the green onion and cilantro. Cilantro helps clear your palette after a bite so you’re ready for the second one!

Waited for almost 10 minutes to get fronthouse’s attention. The fronthouse staff told me that they can only accommodate at the bar as the rest of the tables are for big groups. They could have saved me time and let me know sooner. She was rude to be honest!! Disappointed solo diner!!

Food was good but no way this place is a Michelin ⭐ restaurant. I have been to a few one star but this place is no where close to one in terms of food, service or presentation.

Elevated thai food in the corner of the parc 55 lobby. Fora michelin star restaurant, I wasn’t impressed with the dishes except the mushroom hor mok which had a wonderful savory curry flavor.

I tried a lot of Thai restaurants and this place has fun and creative dishes that I don’t find anywhere else. Very experimental experience for me.

I give Food 4/5 because the entree, rabbit green curry, was good but not as impressive as appetizers . Appetizers were very very good that overshadowed entree lol. I think entree should have more wow effect.

Diner Review №16

Likely just not my style/taste but I wasn't overly impressed with the food. I can appreciate the skill and technique but the actual flavor wasn't my go-to. I really enjoyed certain little things but felt the bigger picture kinda missed and was meh.

I will say that the lunch menu was a decent value and that it's one of the few Michelin places open for lunch.

Ricardo at the bar gave awesome service. I might come back again and try something else but I might have to be convinced since there's so many other good food places to try in SF.

Best Thai in California so I thought ! Before coming back to dine a year later in the evening.

Not as impressed at all..

No mention of time restrictions during the reservation ie allocated seating time!

Upon being seated our waiter told, not asked, us to order (immediately) as he was busy and would not be back at table for 30 mins - no time to review the menu forcing us to order straightaway.

Food was very, salty too salty to eat.
In particular the Masaman curry.
Nothing like a “Thai” Masaman curry, more a salty stew, did not even remotely taste or spice sensation of a Masaman.

1.15 hrs into dining we were told we would need to vacate our table as they had another seating. We noted the table next to us seated at same time we’re not hurried, they had finished dining but were still seated when we left.

Overall totally unhappy with Kim Khao.

Our guests were not impressed at all, over priced, salty food and a rushed experience.

Early Jan 2025 Authentic Thai cuisine within the Hilton Hotel premises.

Menu is extensive with a wide range of provincial and modern Thai dishes. Menu is well crafted with ample descriptions as well for most non Asian dinners. Serving sizes are quite ample and the tastes are authentic and spot on while execution is traditional or very local to Asian cuisine.

The service staff, some are Asian as well and are well versed with the menu.

The place is dim and a bit small but comfortable and intimate enough despite being very casual.

The toilet is a long walk and entry into the hotel lobby with an access card.

Ideal for small groups and dates.

Diner Review №22

For a place that has a Michelin star, the food and service was below average. Having a very limited menu, I expected the food to be top notch, but that was far from reality. I did not enjoy a single dish that I ordered. It was also extremely difficult to get the server's attention to order an item. They don't do any customizations on drinks either. Overall, I would not recommend it! we paid over $200 for 2 people and that has been the biggest waste of my money !

Incredibly expensive mediocre Thai food. Wait staff started our meal telling us if we didn’t order then he wouldn’t be back for 20 minutes as he was busy. Our friends had been sitting there for 10 minutes and we were for 5 at that time. The prices are outrageous for what you get. The curry was too salty. The food was interesting, but not exceptional. Then after paying an over $300 check for 4 people before tip (4 cocktails included), they said they needed our table for the next party. We were there an hour and a half. Would not recommend and would never go again. Also regretting the 20% tip as it really wasn’t earned and the rudeness at the end we were shown.

Thai restaurant with 1 Michelin star won’t let you down. Celebrated my birthday last year!

I tried:
1. Mushroom hor mok
2. Caramelized pork belly with sticky rice
3. Plah pla muek - squid in spicy + tangy seafood sauce
4. Pad see ew
5. Koh kood - pina colada
6. Monta - grasshoper
7. Black rice pudding

Visited Kin Khao for the first time in years. By SF standards, it's still probably one of the better Thai restaurants in the city with authentic flavors and more unusual dishes.

The original chef has several restaurants now, including one in Bangkok, and spends summers in New Zealand, so it seems she is not cooking here anymore.

The menu changes often, and maybe I visited on a night when the current lineup didn't suit my tastes. In general, the flavor profiles were a bit one note and leaned towards being mostly salty or sour. That is expected with Thai food - but GREAT Thai food, especially at this price point, should have more complexity and this didn't meet that standard.

At $34, the shrimp salad had only two whole (large) Gulf shrimp, too little dressing, and too much mediocre quality trout roe. Their $15 version of nam prik noom contained only a few tablespoons of whole roasted "rajas" and garlic (I prefer the versions that are more of a paste) and was not to my liking either.

In addition, several of their most popular dishes weren't available despite the restaurant being far from busy. On a menu with about 12 items, that's not really a great experience.

For the casual setting, the price is very high for a dinner - roughly $100pp with a few dishes, a drink and a dessert. It will probably be a while before I return.

Everything was delicious 🤤 and the dishes we tried were from their lunch menu. I can only imagine 😋 what they have for dinner 🤔 I am coming back for their caramelized pork belly, definitely a big fan of their mouth watering desserts. Yum Yum Yum!

Overall nice food experience! We had the five spice duck noodle soup and the Bangkok posh salad! The duck was very wel cooked and tasty! The Posh salad was fresh and crunchy, the additional fried tofu made it complete. A relaxed casual atmosphere for a Michelin star place.

It's not a traditional Thai restaurant!!! And taste NO GOOD!
I would recommend if you want to try the real Thai food, just go to other restaurants.
And the environment here is really noisy. 😑

Diner Review №36

Great Thai place, but just the overall food was maybe not the level where I was expecting it to be. Don’t get me wrong the food is good, but it was at least for me that day - not amazing.

Duck Noodle soup was good and so was Mushroom Hor Mok (my favorite for the day). Really well done.

Khao MUN Gai and chicken sausage were.. okay.

All in all, it was a good experience of food, but maybe I was looking for something different from such highly praised restaurant. I wish the chefs all the best for all the beautiful dishes they try and create, will be there another time to give it another shot!

Diner Review №37

The relationship between price and the quality of the dish is low.

Diner Review №38

Im from the gastronomic capital of France (Lyon) so I guess Im a bit spoiled...the restaurant has good cooked food, but definitely not Michelin star quality, along with a lack of good service or decor. When you come to a Michelin star restaurant, you expect to be taken care of and impressed with amazing food. It's pretty good, maybe can be considered a Michelin recommended, but definitely not a star...I feel a bit tricked really.

Diner Review №39

Diner Review №40

To be honest, we found Kin Khao to be underwhelming. As a group of three Asian diners, we couldn’t understand how it still holds a one-star Michelin rating. Perhaps it truly deserved the accolade when it first received the star in 2014, but based on our experience, the quality of both the food and service has declined since then. Having dined at numerous Michelin-starred restaurants, we feel that if Kin Khao retains its star, it’s likely at the very bottom of the one-star tier. It also raises questions about the consistency and reliability of the Michelin rating system, particularly at the one-star level.

We ordered the prix fixe menu at $95 per person, but overall, the experience fell short of expectations. Most of the dishes were quite ordinary, with the only highlight being the rice pudding at the end, which somewhat lived up to the restaurant's reputation. The beef cheek was decent but overly salty.

The service was disappointing as well. For instance, when the waitress cleared our table after the main dishes, it still wasn’t properly cleaned—there was rice left on the surface. Additionally, when the waiter brought new utensils, one pair of chopsticks was missing.

The atmosphere was another downside. The noise level was so high that it felt like a marketplace. We struggled to hear each other and frequently had to ask one another to repeat what was said.

In short, the experience did not justify the price or the Michelin star rating. It’s just an ordinary Asian restaurant. We wouldn’t recommend it to others, nor do we plan to return.

Diner Review №41

Had lunch with a group of ~10 and overall it was ok. I found the dishes to be mostly good, not great - flavors weren't always consistent with our Spicy Wings for example, some were _very_ hot, others were very citrus-y.

Service was fine, but didn't feel like it was exceptional in any way - we had empty plates on the table a couple of times, and the kitchen made mistakes with cooking more than we ordered. They were very flexible for dietary restrictions, including modifications for vegan needs.

Overall, I don't understand how it received a Michelin star which is why I'm judging so harshly. I've had significantly better Thai at non-starred places for less. Dinner has a fuller (and set) menu, so try that instead if you're on the fence.

Diner Review №42

Diner Review №43

We ordered 8 different plates for 4 people, and the best was the caramelized pork belly.
The wings were the worth. Sauce on the chicken wings was ok.
Vegetarian plates were raw fresh vegetables with special sauce, nothing special about it.
Staff kept wanting to take the pork cast pot numerous times even though staff was told not to. Staff is nice and helpful when ordering. Once the food gets to the table, their mission is to push you to finish fast.
I would only go for the caramelized pork belly.

Diner Review №44

Delightful experience at Kin Khao during a recent trip to San Francisco. Opted for the tasting menu and overall it felt like a worthwhile choice, though the amount of food was more than I expected (minimal issue). The yum hed, massaman nuea, and black rice pudding were the stars of this meal. Overall this was an enjoyable tasting menu and felt worth the cost.

Diner Review №45

Unclear why this place has a Michelin star. Admittedly, the food is good—loved the wings—but the service is straight up poor. It took us nearly 30 minutes to get OUR DRINKS and we eventually had to flag someone down to order them. Zero management. No one running the floor. Waiter didn’t really apologize, pointing to all the tables he had, like this was our fault. Sorry for expecting something more polished given your M star. The guide should review this restaurant and retract it IMO.

Diner Review №46

Pork belly was really good!

Diner Review №47

I'm writing this review to remind myself that Kin Khao isn't worth it, or else I seemingly always order the wrong thing here. I have literally never had green curry taste this bland and flavorless. It boggles my mind that something can be described as both too spicy and underseasoned. Green curry from a can tastes better than this. The (seemingly unseasoned) rabbit also adds nothing to it aside from a gamey texture, when something like a chicken wing or something would have just fallen off the bone. It didn't make for a pleasant eating experience on any level, except the meatballs, those were decent.

Maybe I should try the Thai place across the street next time. Even if their green curry is "just okay," at least I'm not paying 50 bucks for it.

This was my first experience at a Michelin star restaurant. I had certain expectations regarding service, flavor, ingredient quality and cohesiveness of the fixed menu, compared to other non-starred restaurants of a similar price point.

The service was great! We were seated promptly at our res time, and had drink/food orders taken pretty quickly. For the fixed menu, the pace of the food coming out was perfect. I appreciated the waiters coming around to check regularly and unobtrusively how we were doing with our meals. I gave some opinions with certain dishes when asked by the waitress, and she made a point to let me know after she passed it on to the kitchen.

The mixed drink i ordered was sweet, refreshing and tasty.
Foodwise, i have mixed opinions.

1: great oysters. Sweet with excellent crunch from the fries shallots. The chili also provided an excellent contrast to the richness of the oyster

2a. Persimmon dish: amazing! The texture and sweetness reminds me of the juiciest scallop. The birds eye chili is very spicy, but good in small doses. It did clash with the flavor of the delicata squash (that was served at the same time as this dish)

2b: the squash is lovely and sweet. The mix of textures in this plate is phenomenal. The squash is soft and perfectly roasted, the toasted coconut and peanuts provide the perfect crunch.

Soup: the rockfish was a little tough. The soup base itself was a fish broth but the sourness overwhelmed the subtle flavors of the rest of the dish. I was grateful when the next course came (with sticky rice) because the rice with the soup toned down the flavors enough to be enjoyable. I did appreciate that the soup was not on the menu and was a "gift" for ordering the fixed menu.

3a. The braised pork belly: amazing quality of pork with no boar taint. The flavors were incredible and strong, paired perfectly with the sticky rice, and was rivaled only by my mom's pork belly dish. I do wish it was served in a slightly more shallow cast iron because it was difficult to get the sauce out without touching the sides of the dish which was very hot.

3b. The squid was delicious. I dont even typically like squid much, but either the freshness or prep had the texture be soft but not overly chewy. the broth and seasoning the squid was in tasted similar to the soup, a bit sour, but was toned down perfectly by the sweet richness of the garlic and herbs.

4a. Rabbit curry: the rabbit itself was my least favorite part of this dish. the curry was savory and rich, the apple eggplants were delightful and the meatballs had great flavor and texture. The rabbit in comparison was less flavorful and didn't stand up to the complexity and strength of the rest of the dish. You probably could have replaced it with most any sort of meat and had the same or better result.

4b. The green beans were the most disappointing part of this meal. The beans themselves were fibrous and stringy and tasted overcooked. They didnt have that crunch or flavor i love and associate with this type of dish and, unfortunately, I've consistently had much better versions at my local asian restaurants.

5. The rice pudding dessert was good! The freshness of the strawberry, the toasted rice and the rice pudding all complemented each other well. The outcome was an almost smoky, not overly sweet end to a good meal.

I love a fixed menu because it means someone who knows way more than me has put thought into the flavors of each dish and their flow through the course of a meal. In this case, the flavors of many of the dishes were strong but dishes seemed disconnected for the most part, and actively clashed in other parts of the meal. The portion sizes were large, especially for a fixed menu with so many dishes. The dishes themselves were hit/miss and i would not order the fixed menu again.

TL;DR: Kin khao had phenomenal service, good ambiance and a few superstars when it comes to flavor, but i was disappointed with the lack of cohesiveness of the dishes and the duds in the fixed menu. i would recommend ordering ala carte and enjoy!

Diner Review №54

I really enjoyed my meal here. The caramelized pork belly was amazing and so was the chicken and noodle dish. I also enjoyed the beef curry. I highly recommend coming here for excellent Thai Food. The food was delicious. The service was also excellent.

Visiting from NY and knowing that the restaurant is Michelin rated we were expecting more. Service was VERY slow, and it was too loud in the restaurant to even have a conversation. The drinks were AWFUL 2/5, not balanced at all. The roasted squash was delicious 4/5, wings were crunchy but the sauce was too sour 3/5, yaowaraj noodles my husband didn’t enjoy it but it reminded me of noodles we had in Thailand 4/5, Gaeng hed 3/5 overpriced vegan dish but the curry base was ok. Won’t be back and won’t recommend to others either.

Diner Review №58

The food was decent but not great. However the service was terrible. Our server disappeared for a while in the middle. Had to ask a few times for the desserts menu and drinks. They forgot a dish which we eventually cancelled. The place is loud. Didnt feel like a michellin dining experience.

Arrived exactly in time for our reservation, said my husband was parking. Was handed a menu and told to wait outside. Next a white woman walks in same situation and she was asked to wait inside in the bar area. Double much!! Then was given the worst seat by the door which had a draught until we asked to be moved. Food was very average nothing about it said Michelin Star

We had a wonderful meal at Kin Khao. We had thought it unlikely we would be able to eat here as we had not made reservations, however there is a communal table in the middle of the restaurant for people without reservations. We sat here and loved it.

My friend and I ordered a range of dishes along with a few cocktails. We shared all of the food and everything was delicious. Our waitress was really knowledgeable and gave a couple of really good recommendations that were appreciated. She also perfectly guided us to the correct ordering quantity.

The dinner started well. The server was very attentive, but that changed VERY QUICK!
we finished our 1st course (tasting menul) and the server came back and asked if I wanted another cocktail, I asked for the venue to review, it took him 15min (and a reminder) to bring the menu.
We then waited 20 minutes for the second course (table beside us had 2 courses in the time we got 1)
The food was ok, but very one note (spice). They had issues clearing the plates and cleaning the table between courses, one point the next course came out, before clearing the serving plates from the last course were cleared.
The only dish that the table enjoyed was the pork belly (The reservation was made indicating a 40th birthday, and not once did someone say Happy Birthday.
This restaurant has left me wondering how they received a Michelin star, I have been to Michelin bib/recommend with better food and service.

Diner Review №67

Had the tasting menu. Confused about how this received a michelin star as the service was not exceptional, and the food was decent.

Diner Review №68

I stopped by recently while attending conference nearby. It's been a while since my last visit, which was pre-pandemic. While I didn't have a reservation, I was able to grab a seat for lunch quickly.

The ambience and the friendly staff was just as I remembered. I ordered my favorite dish - Khao Mun Gai (chicken with rice) and broth. Somehow it was not as delicious as I had remembered. Maybe it's the chicken... it didn't seem as juicy and the quantity seemed to have shrank a little as well. The chicken broth is still very delicious despite the hefty price tag if you want a refill.

I didn't get a chance to order more dishes because I was alone but I will definitely give it a few more chances with more friends because it was one of my favorite Thai places in the area.

I just walked out of Kin Khao and had to share my experience. I usually don’t write negative reviews unless something is really bad, but this was a letdown for a Michelin-starred restaurant.

First off, the atmosphere was a huge disappointment. Instead of a nice, upscale vibe, it felt like a noisy pub. The loud groups and blaring music made it impossible to enjoy our meal. Honestly, I love pubs, but I expect a different kind of experience when I’m paying Michelin prices.

Now, let’s talk about the food. While everyone has different tastes, I found the dishes pretty basic. They lacked the creativity and flavor that you’d expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant. The presentation was nothing special, and none of the flavors really stood out. It felt like they were more focused on getting people in and out rather than giving us a memorable dining experience.

At first, I thought it might just be a cultural thing—maybe my European standards were too high. But I had an amazing meal at a non-Michelin restaurant in San Francisco the night before, so that’s not the case. This place just didn’t live up to its reputation.

If you’re looking for a true Michelin-quality experience, I’d recommend saving your money and trying somewhere else. Kin Khao may have a star, but it definitely didn’t shine for us.

(The staff seemed to notice we weren’t happy but didn’t engage with us, so I didn’t get the chance to share my feedback directly)

Diner Review №74

We went there on our wedding day dinner because it was one of the few michelin star restaurants open on a Monday. It was so loud, the food was horrible, I don’t think I’ve ever had worse Thai food in my life. The dish either had no taste or had overpowering tangy or spicy taste. It was supposed to be a special dinner, but had a terrible experience and we ended up wasting most of the food because of how bad it was.

The service was not good either.

Diner Review №75

Came here for lunch on a Saturday, wasn't crowded, and there were plenty of open tables.
I'm not saying this restaurant was bad in any way, but it was a headscratcher for me why Michelin people thought this restaurant was worth 1 star. May have to try their dinner to understand.
Although the foods were not bad, not too salty, not too spicy, not too much of everything, I thought they were all a bit blend and wasn't full of flavors. Also, I thought lunch options were limited. Servers were friendly, but no one checked on us after foods were brought out. I only saw them after the meal was finished to get the check. We ordered a side of sticky rice and didn't receive it but they brought us an appetizer that we did not order, which we informed and they took it away. We didn't feel like calling them and order the sticky rice again and it wasn't on the final receipt so it was ok. Overall it wasn't bad but wasn't good either.

Embedded in a hotel and featuring Restroom Finding Adventures, there is in plain sight one of the most delicious meals I've ever found.

Diner Review №82

I've eaten at a few Michelin star restaurants and the experience of eating at Kin Khao fell way short of what we were expecting.

The good:
My partner and I each got a drink. I had a cocktail and it was really good, with an interesting and complex yet balanced flavor. My partner had the Thai tea and it was pretty good.

The servers were very nice and helpful. Service was fast and the food came out fairly quickly. (Albeit before the drinks).

The price was reasonable, if not cheaper, than other 1 star restaurants I've been to.

The bad:
We had the Khao Yum and Pork Belly.

The Khao Yum was an interesting rice salad with fresh, herbal, and sweet flavors. But the quality of ingredients wasn't amazing and the plating could have been better. It was good but nothing exciting or mind blowing. Very average.

The pork belly was maybe the blandest pork belly I've had from a restaurant. It was cooked very well and extremely tender. But the flavor wasn't great and it was hard to finish. The sticky rice that we got with it was also pretty average.

We arrived right on time for our reservation but still had to wait to be seated. Not a big deal at all normally but for a restaurant with a Michelin star, it was disappointing. The restaurant is also extremely loud and crowded with a dated interior.

Overall it was an average dining experience yet left us feeling dissatisfied given our high expectations due to good reviews and Michelin star rating.

Diner Review №83

Surprisingly great Michelin recommended food, pretty good service that warms up as you make conversation and talk about their food, but you're paying for it's convenient location in the parc55 near the powell st. Bart.

Drinks: had an affinity to try the more Thai inspired drinks - Tom yum 2.0 and the Thai style Manhattan based on descriptions. The Manhattan tasted like any Manhattan but the Tom yum 2.0 was a wonderfully refreshing starter that paired well with the appetizers.
(Note: don't remember the names of any of the dishes so go based on descriptions)

Appetizers - the mushroom pate with homemade rice puff crackers was AMAZING. Large chunks of I believe maitake mushrooms and a wonderfully creamy pate that reminded me of when I used to eat duck liver pates (my non-vegetarian fave). Alongside the rice salad which was like a Korean bibimbap but Thai flavors. Yum!

Entrees: drunken noodles with hodo tofu (recommended as a favorite) and the mushroom curry. Drunken noodles were good but pretty expected. Nothing standout. The curry on the other hand was DANG good. Again, delicious high quality flash fried mushrooms and a curry that is deep, complex and SPICY. Be warned on the last part. but when the main bits were gone I used the leftover rice to sop up the sauce, no shame.

Dessert - black rice pudding. Also highly recommended. Honestly not super impressive. It was watery. And then the descriptjon said a pecan praline but instead we got puffy rice pieces which did not add any nutty depth nor the same kind of crunch which was just disappointing. The only non recommended dish.

Overall, kind Khao does real good Thai and vegetarian to beat. Would definitely come back!

This place was a random pick that surprised me with its elegantly made and plated Thai food. Every dish was delicious. We made reservations earlier that day since it was busy. The dishes are served family style, so we ordered the caramelized pork belly, the soft shell crab gaeng kua, the baby bok choy, and jasmine rice, and we ate nearly every bite until stuffed. The pork belly was so tender and sticky and flavorful, and the sauce in the dish was great with rice. I haven't had a soft shell crab since culinary school and didn't realize how tender the shell is. It was light and slightly crispy, but not chewy like shrimp shells. The lotus root taste like parsnips if you've never had them. The curry was orange and slightly sweet. The baby choy was a perfect, surprisely divine addition. Whatever simple sauce they cooked this in was delicious. Very memorable. No leftovers.

Kin Khao is a true gem in San Francisco! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. The star of the night, however, was Miles, the bartender. Miles’ friendly and attentive service made our evening even more special—he's a true artist behind the bar! He also made great recommendations/suggestions without being overly pushy.

We also had the Massaman curry, and it was out of this world. The rich, complex flavors and tender meat were cooked to perfection, making it one of the best curries I've ever had. If you're in San Francisco and craving authentic Thai food with exceptional service, Kin Khao is the place to be. Highly recommend!

Kin Khao serves up some of the most delicious and tasty Thai cuisine I’ve had. My absolute favorite dish was the PLAH PLA MUEK—it was packed with flavor and had just the right amount of spice. The bok choy was another standout, especially the broth, which was rich and flavorful.

On the other hand, the CARAMELIZED PORK BELLY wasn’t quite to my taste; I felt that the sweetness overpowered the savory elements of the dish. However, the Soi Ari cocktail was a definite highlight, with flavors that were perfectly balanced and well put together.

The restaurant itself is a small, cozy spot with a nice, communal atmosphere. It's a very nice place overall, but I’d recommend making reservations in advance due to its size. The staff were incredibly attentive and communicated well, making the dining experience all the more enjoyable.

Diner Review №95

Great Thai food, I mean, the Michelin star they hold speaks for themselves.. Staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. 100% recommended, they offer a tasting menu as well.

Diner Review №96

Way over rated. Food was undercooked or over oiled. $46 for a bowl of curry that had my tummy upset for how oily it was.

Service was unpleasant.

Diner Review №98

Not sure how this place got a Michelin Star (don’t get me wrong, it’s still a nice local Thai restaurant). Maybe I ordered the wrong dishes, or I should have ordered a set. The asparagus salad was awesome though.

Diner Review №99

Don’t get fooled by the star, it’s not worth your time. The food is fine, some dishes are not good and too greasy, like the beef curry. Costs are out of sync with the quality. They also kick you out at 9pm. Atmosphere is non existent.

Great food, proper Thai flavors and good service.
Excellent cocktails and conversation.

Diner Review №103

Very good Thai food place! I won't say it's close to what I had in Thailand, but it has its own blend of Thai flavor and modern American. I had their pretty hot wings and pad kee mao, and loved both! Reservations are recommended for dinner but probably not for lunch. The menu is different for lunch and dinner, though.

Diner Review №105

This place was legit.

We were a bit dubious after arriving at 55 Cyril Magnin and then having to hunt around in the hotel for the place. Started to feel like we were going to end up at a mall eatery. Pro tip: actual entrance is at the corner of Mason and Ellis, and the Cyril Magnin address is useful only if you're mailing them something.

Back to the food: very inventive, but also bursting with authentic flavors. The hot wings are more tangy than spicy, but it works. Hints of tamarind and fish sauce blend perfectly with the Sriracha for a unique taste. Also had Massaman Nuea, a perfectly savory curry made with tender braised beef cheeks & potatoes in Massaman curry paste balanced with coconut milk and crisp shallots. So delish. My wife's courses were also on point, and also quite unique both in flavor and presentation.

Service was ok, friendly and all that but we were left hanging a couple of times.

All in all, a great meal and definitely worth checking out.

Consistently good! One of our fave Michelin stars for friend gathering - great portions (for Michelin) and family style. Every dish is full of flavours. We’ve come back several times. Would recommend the black rice pudding for dessert - the sweet, salty, and sour balancing each other out, and the texture is 👌
Loved the soft shell crab curry, squid + pork belly (side of sticky rice), and pad kee mow.

Food was great and it was lovely to have a menu of non standard Thai dishes to choose from. The flavours were outstanding.

Delicious Thai food with a good cocktails menu. The table seating time was a bit short for us to have dessert. By the time we finished our appetizer and mains, the staff already started looking to clear the table and offer the bill so we skipped the dessert. There were a couple different dishes on the menu that were hard to find in other Thai restaurants so that was a very good choice that made them stand out for me.

Diner Review №114

Exceptional Thai food!

Diner Review №115

Do not eat here: 1. Dirty table, we want to change table but server lied saying we don't have reservation, which is not true. 2. Bad altitude, shouting at customers. If you want a bad experience in San francisco, eat here.

Diner Review №116

The food was great! I tried five of the vegetarian dishes with my dinner mates (food is served family style). Each one was entirely unique utilizing different vegetables and accomplishing completely different flavor profiles. The khao yum is the perfect, refreshing starter and if I had to recommend a number one must have for a dinner main it would be the gaeng hed, but you can’t go wrong with any of the vegetarian options.

All of the wait staff were attentive, timely, and professional. The intervals of time between courses was expert and they checked in with our table often, but not too much which can be a difficult balance to strike.

Only complaint is that it was VERY loud which made it difficult to maintain a conversation at our own table. This is not a fault of the restaurant, rather it was a few tables of loud talkers who were oblivious to what a normal dinner conversation volume should be. Just keep in mind that this may not be a good setting for a dinner where business or intimate conversations are a priority.

Diner Review №117

The food is incredible, unlike any other Thai food I’ve had in the US, flavorful and dynamic.

Wish they’d be honest with their pricing though, instead of trying to sneak in hidden service fees. Probably won’t be back because of that.

Decent and perfect place for a thia food. Michelin star 2023. I'm loving it.

Diner Review №125

This place offers no-frills and super delicious Thai food. Service is friendly and attentive. I had chicken wings, duck noodles, and black rice pudding. Everything was good, but chicken wings could have used a little less salt or fish sauce. I was not a big fan of the cocktail however. The interior was giving casual vibe. There was a faint fish sauce essence in the air as well.

Diner Review №126

One of those places where everything tastes incredible. Service is great and super responsive. 1 star docked on atmosphere only because it's not in the nicest part of SF (not much the restaurant can do about that, though).

Warning: if you don't like spicy food, this might not be the place for you. Alternatively, if you're like me and love spicy food, you'll be right at home!

Diner Review №127

The food was excellent (we had the tasting menu), but the service was unsatisfactory and the atmosphere was terrible. I am genuinely questioning how they received a Michelin star.

Visited during the Pandemic, One word. MEH

So we met some friends here for dinner while in SF. I was initially excited to try a Thai fusion restaurant, but....Meh.

Upon arrival, I arrived wearing a mask (no brainier). You are asked to digitally sign a disclaimer for COVID prior to being seated (also no big deal). I pull out my phone to digitally sign the disclaimer, and because I needed to authenticate with Face ID I moved my mask down just a small amount....I was IMMEDIATELY scolded by the hostess "SIR YOU NEED TO KEEP YOUR MASK ON!" There was literally NO ONE within 6 feet of me. I understand the mandate but Jesus lady relax.

Anyway, we met our friends, we were seated, and began our order. The ordering process is all via phone ( no problem), but it's very convoluted. Each person orders on their own phone, and pays separately and the food all arrives at different times. Meh

The foods wasn't bad.... but it wasn't good either. Also Meh.

15 minutes later probably 4 different staff offered us to-go boxes, giving the impression that they wanted us to leave; Even though nobody was waiting to be seated...(I understand why)

Moral of the story? MEH.

Diner Review №131

I unfortunately had a terrible experience at this restaurant. How they earned a michelin star is beyond my understanding. Their food is sub par not even mediocre. Their service was terrible and their staff could not be more indifferent. They are not by any means vegeterian friendly and they do not welcome toddlers. Our hostess was super rude and not courteous and they did not even accommodate the spice level for my toddler. I would never go back here and would never recommend this to anyone with a family. Worst experience ever. Disgrace to thai food and michelin guide.

Our server was very rude and loud. We could not understand what she was saying. We had our kids with us and asked for food that they could eat. Everything was so spicy they couldn't eat anything. We spent over 200$ and couldn't eat most of the food. Very disappointing to say the least.

Diner Review №135

My fav go-to when I’m in the city. Just fabulous and absolutely flavorful!

Diner Review №136

Decided to try this out as a solo diner while on a business trip to SF, curious about their Michelin star. I had the degustation menu. The appetizers on the menu were really good, I did not care much for the mains at all. Far too much rice was served (both sticky rice and regular Jasmine rice in separate portions for different dishes).

Spice levels of the appetizer courses were really good, Thai standard spicy. But the rest was a bit too tangy and blah for my taste buds.

I was seated at a 2 person table at the back. It was a Wednesday evening and very crowded. Really noisy and loud.

Service was impeccable.

The dessert dish of black sticky coconut rice was amazing!

I and the Tom Yum Gin cocktail, very refreshing and kind of what I expected. Loved the menu explanation that said "not the soup". 😁

Reservations are required. I was unable to get a reservation initially via resy but they allow you to specify a time window that works and add you to the "notify" list. This worked and the restaurant confirmed a few hours ahead that they had a table for me.

Really amazing Thai food. The rabbit green curry was amazing, and the best tasting curry that I have ever had, so creamy and delicious. The drunken stir-fry had an incredible taste and texture, it had some really nice spice. The blood sausage dish was nice, but probably my least favourite, even if it was really nice. We were two people sharing this, and we were both really full even with only one bowl of rice.

Highly recommended and the price are really reasonable, especially the stir-fry is really cheap compared to the quality and quantity you get.

Diner Review №141

I appreciate that the menu had clearly labelled vegetarian options which used a vegetarian fish sauce alternative! Unfortunately, I found the food somewhat bland, but I would recommend the Yaowaraj Noodles if you’re here.

Diner Review №142

My experience with this restaurant was horrible. I counted at least 15 empty tables but the manager refused to sit me anywhere but the bar. Never going there again.

Diner Review №143

Good.food, unique dishes, stuff i have not had prior. There wasn't a dish I didn't enjoy.

The spice level was spot on for the spicier dishes.

Diner Review №144

Stayed at Parc 55, and this lovely
Restaurant is attached. The service was very friendly, and efficient. I had the Chili Jam asparagus salad with a side of stir fried baby bok choy, which was delicious. To drink, I enjoyed a Tom Yum 2.0, which was to die for! So fresh, and complex! Will be returning!

Diner Review №145

Seven of us enjoyed a fully vegetarian meal and we were wowed by every dish that came out, and the care and attention every member of staff gave to us. Every single dish was wonderful, and we would definitely order it all again! On the drinks front, I highly recommend the Tom Yum 2.0 cocktail (which I very highly recommend), and the Riesling and Verdujo were great too.

Diner Review №146

The service at Kin Khao was very disappointing.
First of all, we arrived at the front desk and were greeted by an unhappy host who looked and talked in a snobbish style. She led us to a table which we didn't quite like so we asked for a change, and she was very unhappy about that and said we need to sit either here or the other side. We switched to a corner table and she laughed at us by saying we like to squeeze in the corner. The host also pushed my seat very rudely when she said I blocked the way of an exit. She should have let me move first, now she pushed so hard, making me painful.

Diner Review №154

Great service, interesting menu, good selection of wines by the glass that pair well with the food.

If you like a lot of spice, and looking for a different style of Thai food than the typical menu, this is a great place for you! I did find some dishes that were not too spicy for my milder pallet.

I really enjoyed the squid dish the most! Very tender, nice balance of flavor, just enough spice to enhance it without overwhelming it. I paired my food with the Riesling, which worked out very well. I could’ve eaten three orders!

My dining companion had the chicken and noodle dish. It had very good flavor combination, but he said the chicken was quite dry.

We shared the asparagus and fried smelt dish, which was very tasty and unusual, with a red sauce that had a lot of heat. Fortunately, I was able to avoid the sauce it for the most part. The quality of the asparagus was not that great. I was expecting better given it is currently in season and I have been getting great quality at the farmers market and as a seasonal dish in restaurants lately.

We also shared the black rice pudding, dessert. I’m a big fan of black rice in all forms. I thought this was interesting. I was glad that it wasn’t too sweet, but I was not super excited about it.

For drinks, we had a total of three glasses of wine and small pot of tea.

We split the bill at $86 each before tip.

$100 after tip per person for a modest quantity and decent quality. But I’m finding that to be the new norm in San Francisco wherever I go. (I go out at least once a week for dinner.)

Diner Review №155

Very good food but small portions compared to the price. Atmosphere was nice and service was good. We were able to just walk in and they were able to accommodate us for dinner.

This place has a Michelin star, but only a 4.2 on Google and a 3.9 on Yelp as of 5/6/2024.

My overall experience was outstanding. The only reason I can think of why some may not rate it a perfect 5/5 is because some dishes are a little too spicy for the average person. However, if you're not a fan of spicy food, it's worth noting that this is a Thai restaurant.

There are definitely cheaper Thai places, but this is one of the cheapest Michelin-starred places in San Francisco. It's great value, and the service was pretty good, too.

Michelin star restaurant inside Hilton Hotel. Maybe the "Michelin star" has bumped up my expectations, it's a bit overrated. Pretty good neo-Thai cuisine but definitely not the most outstanding SE Asian restaurant in the area. Also, if you're not parking with the hotel, parking and walking in the area, which is famously known as Tenderloin, is a bit rough... Not really the restaurant's fault but my advice to anyone who is planning to visit - be extra careful...

Diner Review №166

Went before a show at the Orpheum. The service was very average. They didn’t really explain the menu, and they should offer more details on spice variability. We had the chicken wings, charred egg plant, Chinese noodles, and larb. The larb dish was inedible. It was dry and way too spicy, and only after begging the waitress to come over would she offer coconut milk. The other dishes were just average. Overall I’d skip this place.

Diner Review №167

Such an elevated version of all of our favorite flavors from visiting Thailand. Everything from the eggplant starter to their version of popular street food dishes to a rabbit green curry. Plus the cocktails are 🔥.

Diner Review №168

One of the best Thai places I've been to in the U.S. and I've tried a lot in Los Angeles and NYC. The Namprik long rua crispy catfish was spicy and flavorful, with real pungent kaffir lime flavors. The Gaeng Hed mushroom curry was an unexpected hit. The YAOWARAJ noodle which is like a Cantonese chow-fun or Malaysian char kway teow was flavorful with XO seafood sauce and charred flavors. Charred eggplant salad was umami filled goodness with birds eye chilis as a kick. Wish there were more people with us so we could try more dishes. Worth the hype.

Diner Review №171

Seriously, not sure how the 1 Michelin star is obtained from this place, but Google review one star is well deserved.
The server at our table has a strong ego on what he thought of us and what he wanted us to order. He pushed us from the beginning about the menus. The 2nd time he came back , he already showed his annoying face with a fake smile for our hesitation of ordering. Seems we are not welcome to ask any questions.
The set dinner was $95 each person, he said we could get everything form the set, but we doubted that very much, however he walked away fast and busy with other matters in the restaurant. Once he came back to ask us to order dishes, Only one friend wanted to order the set, then he said we couldn't do it, it had to be everyone agrees on ordering the sets. We don't mind the clarification and we would have made other choices after, but we were upset his manner. My friends at the end of the table couldn't to think of what to order when option is out, so they kept thinking without any suggestions or assistance from the server. In order not to take up his "treasurable life time", I asked for taking my order first, but then he just pretended he wasn't understanding and used his way to split up our billing system first before we proceeded to make order. Wow.. we were going to eat under his regime. What a manner!
A father of family ordered Laab Kua and the server wrote Caramelized Pork Belly instead. So the father told him it was not his dish, but the server actually insisted that the father ordered Caramelized Pork Belly and not even willing to check again and apologize at all.
The server did not like to listen to us when we have questions and he just answered us in his way of thinking... That's why I said he had so much ego in him.
He came back for filling up the water with his fake smile continuously. He might think we were the dumbest customer for his day? We don't deserve that.
My friends ordered wings and noodles both are overly salty, I know they are easy going people, they don't really complain about anything when it is not necessary. So they told the server, he just said "ok, I will tell the chef l." That's it & he left immediately.
We finally got a superior staff and told her about the salty dishes and I think she offered a discount on their bill secretly, however the server at our table provided the discount on another bill at the end (the same table of another family)... So I'm not sure he's not liking us ? Or he's just not happy with his job.
Anyhow, u likely I will recommend this place or I will strongly not recommend this place at all.

Diner Review №175

I’m curious who gave Kin Khao a Michelin star? I agree it’s one star, but not a Michelin star. Our table was very disappointed with the food. I found two pieces of hair in my rabbit curry. The pork belly was a salty gut bomb and the saeng wha, well don't get me started. Music is way to loud. Couldn’t even hear the person across the table from me. This is not worth the price, you can find way better Thai food at a better price in the city. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Bad experience for a Michelin star restaurant. I had high expectations and was let down. This experience has motivated me to become a food critic.

Diner Review №176

Food is very spicy - as expected in a traditional Thai restaurant. Beware if you’re sensitive to spicy foods especially deeply rich spices.

All dishes were amazing and I’m excited to return. Food is extremely fresh, and all ingredients are very representative of authentic Thai cuisine paired perfectly with balanced spices used throughout the experience. Extra props for the perfect wine menu!

I had never before tried pork belly - but I think I would come back here for that alone - it’s caramelized and comes out bubbling in cast iron.

Absolutely delightful dining experience!

We were captivated by the clean, fresh flavors of the Thai cuisine offered. Despite its modest size, the menu impresses, particularly with what may be the city's finest Papaya Salad. It's a delightful blend of mild fish sauce and spices embracing crisp, flavorful papaya slices. The Bangkok Posh Salad, accompanied by succulent, generously-sized steamed chicken, and perfectly cooked eggs, did not disappoint. Make your own green wraps filled with meatballs, were delicious, especially when paired with a spicy sauce that tied all the flavors together. We're eagerly anticipating our return.
