We are Thai people who have grown up with local Thai cuisine, passed down from generation to generation, where parents have lovingly prepared meals for their children, emphasizing both taste and ingredients. These elements have enchanted us with a passion for both eating and cooking. When we had the opportunity to venture into the food business, we wanted to bring our favorite flavors to our customers.
Our restaurant was born out of a deep love for Thai culture and the deliciousness of Thai cuisine, combined with the dynamism and diversity of Asian food. We’ve blended these elements together to create an unparalleled dining experience.
This is a gem in the West Portal and I highly recommend it and will return!
We arrived an hour after opening and we're seated immediately. Soon after the was a line forming for dinner. You can try and get on the wait-list via Yelp. We ordered the Crispy Papaya Salad and it was amazing! The sauce was perfect. Not too sweet and not too sour. The Khao Soi was good, but a bit salty IMHO. The Duck Breast Panang Curry was good when all the components were eating together on one bite. The duck breast tasted like liver to me, but it was still tasty. The Burnt Butter Kaya Toast with Coconut Ice Cream was AMAZING! It was so big, but we finished it. It should not be wasted!
Pro tip: arrive early for dinner or get on Yelp to sign up for the virtual wait-list.
One of my favorites Thai restaurants! Every dish is done so well, so you really can't go wrong with what you order. We ordered the fried squid with salted egg yolk, fried rice with steak, and the duck curry - everything had great flavors and was cooked just right.
If you're coming on a weekend, I recommend getting there by 5:30pm to avoid a wait of an hour or more. If you're a party of 6 or more, you can make an online reservation so I highly recommend doing that.
Found this restaurant while looking for dinner near stonetown. Tried to make reservations via yelp but the reservation was closed. Arrived around 6:45 pm and in waiting list for more than one hour. Finally we are seated around 8 ish. It is sizable restaurant with simple interior. It serves Thai food with some twist. Menu is considered simple but unique dishes. The food come up pretty quickly. I like the most fried papaya salad and crab claypot rice. The fish is average but very fresh and part are crunchy. The khao soi is good but I like soupy one. Kaya toast with icecream is yummy. It was nice dinner.
So we were lucky to get a reservation in under 24 hrs to this highly sought after new Thai restaurant. I have to admit it was a worthwhile experience as most of the dishes we tried were simply fantastic and brought me back to my endless trips to Thailand. The flavours are bold and brought back many street food experiences. The only dish that was rather disappointing was the Pad Cha. It was rather bland more on the boring side for a seafood dish. I love their Hed Tod and Yum Neur Yang for appetizers. The crispy Papaya salad wasn't to everyone's liking, I think it's a unique take on the dish, but yes it doesn't have the papaya flavor if that's what you are looking for. I can recommend the short rips , their fried rice, their Pas See Ew , Duck curry...
Each dish is unique and hits a wide range of one's taste buds.
I d go back for sure but I certainly make sure a reservation is in place. As we left we talked to some folks who were on the drop in wait-list and sat around for two hours to get a table. Now I think the place is good but no it's not worth a two hour wait
Food is great, there are some unique dishes here, especially the steam eggs in Tom Yum sauce. Fried rice w beef is also very good, and the sour soup with chicken. The vibe is great, a bit hard to get in still, but you can put your name in the Yelp waitlist. Very happy for this addition in West Portal. The kaya toast dessert is so good, but def for sharing!
Came here on recommendations of a friend. Overall, was a memorable experience. However, the food was a little underwhelming.
Some highlights were the Panama duck curry and the khao pad mun nuer. Both of the meats were cooked to perfection. For dessert, definitely recommend the burnt butter Kaya toast, which is a symphony of amazing texture and flavor. However, the Khoi toi was essentially egg noodles in a pretty bland sauce. The crab rice hot pot also lacked flavor. Very carb heavy. Also, I was disappointed that none of the dishes had many vegetables, besides some green onions for garnish. Even the papaya salad was essentially fried papaya strips with sauce.
Very busy place that is definitely undergoing growing pains. Excellent meal, Would not visit again.
After tonight’s delicious meal, this has won the spot as my new favorite Thai place! We ordered tom kha hed soup, khao soi with fried chicken, pad see ew, and Kaya toast with coconut ice cream. Everything was super delicious, wonderful flavors, generous portions, perfectly cooked and good quality food. It was quite busy on a Sunday night, we waited about 45 mins before being seated, so expect some wait time. They use the Yelp waitlist system. Also to note, it does get quite loud inside the restaurant, so if you’re sensitive to noise, that is something to consider. The service was friendly and the lady that served us is Thai and super sweet. Can’t wait to come back and try more dishes!
The food was delicious. The service was not only efficient, but warm, and the atmosphere was cozy. I can't wait to dine here again!
Extremely bad service that allows friends to skip line.
Came here on Feb 13 and put our name down since they don't take reservations. My friend and I waited more than 40 minutes, and finally we were the next party of 2 to be seated (the yelp kiosk shows where you are in the wait list.)
Guess what? A couple walked in, hugged their female waitress friend, who prompted seated them at the next available table. We had to wait another 10-15 minutes before being seated.
What's the point of having a queue if you are going to allow your friends to bypass it and flaunt it in front of your customers who need to wait 45+ minutes to be seated?
The food there is not worth this kind of insult.
I love this place, everything is so delicious, I've to go every other month. The kaya French toast is just the cherry on top!
Are there two different waitlists? The iPad in the front had me as the next group of two up for a table, but two other parties were seated before us. Then, when we were seated we had to share a table. Just didn’t feel right. Food was great. Service was rushed. Would probably have ordered dessert if our check wasn’t brought right to us after finishing our plates.
This is a gem in the West Portal and I highly recommend it and will return!

Great food

the best thai restaurant in the bay. loved the massaman, fried rice and wagyu. their dessert was amazing with kaya and toast. amazing new restaurant. fair prices and no weird surcharges either
I will be taking my friends and family here again, the food was delicious and very flavorful, a perfect Thai iced tea, and properly spicy!
Best Thai food in the city. The wait can be quite long as the space is limited and the restaurant seems to always be packed but the food more than makes up for it. Stand out items include the beef fried rice, boat noodles, and Pad Thai.
Food is excellent, service is a bit shaky. Some language barrier maybe, I asked to sit at a different table and was rejected rudely by the lady. But then the food made me happy.
Truly excellent. Mix of both great Thai classics and inventive dishes.
The kaprao moo sap and tom yum reminded me of the best versions I had living in Thailand.
Khao mun neua was delicious twist on Thai chicken rice. Glad I tried the duck Penang since everyone was talking about it, but I wouldn’t get it again. Can’t wait to go back!
Came here because of glowing reviews from family members and it was incredibly delicious with a cozy and inviting atmosphere, excited to go back and try more!
I don’t typically leave reviews but I was blown away by the food here. Delicious. Great addition to the neighborhood.

Prior to coming here, I wasn’t feeling super hungry and thought I’d just order a light bite. However, when I saw they had a combo poached/fried chicken & rice entrée on the menu, my appetite was awakened. Chicken & rice is a classic and one of my all-time favorites. This place did not disappoint. Each bite was so juicy and flavorful, it made me want to devour the plate. I feel like I found my go-to for whenever I’m craving chicken & rice.
Nice staff, great food. The soups were delicious. not sure i was in love with the fried green papaya salad, but the sauces and flavors are on point. They don't skimp on herbs and they definitely don't leave you bloated from too much MSG like many thai places. I am GF and really enjoyed the options.

Uses yelp which won’t let you join the waitlist unless you download the app. Also no room to wait inside and it rained
Amazing and authentic Thai food! They have a lot of dishes that you can't find anywhere else in the city. We love everything we ordered and will definitely visit again! Recommend joining Yelp waitlist since they get very busy. It's well worth the wait. :)
Fun evening

Came here on a very busy Friday night. Staff are friendly and nice.
Food is amazing 👏.
One thing is if it's a full house and there is large parties, make sure to bring ear plugs. Lol .... it's not a big space and ppl like to talk among themselves so loud it's a hindrance for me to fully enjoy my meal if you know what I mean.
If you speak very loud, it may not bother u. Lol!!!
A random selection on a foggy West Portal evening began with a line and wait list. The relatively small dining area was filled with families and couples enjoying themselves. Noted are the beautiful large wooden tables (even for two), eliminating the cramped feeling usually provided for single and couples when having multiple dishes. The wait provided ample time to review the menu and shorten the choices. The staff was warm and welcoming and always with a smile addressed our questions. We started with pomegranate lemonade and thai ice tea, both quite refreshing. A starter of dumplings started our evening high. An appropriate time to enjoy appetizer was followed by duck penang curry with a side of jasmine rice and korean noodles with short rib - medium spice. I would like to try native next time.. Though chicken protein option not available, you are able to choose your wellness of the beef. Our selection was enough for two, and leftovers were brought home. Great selection and highly recommended. Be prepared for a wait and bring layers to deal with the fog and chill.
Exciting addition to West Portal! I enjoyed this meal and thought the place has a lot of potential, but isn’t quite meeting that potential yet.
Location is great — one block from the West Portal Muni station and plenty of street parking nearby. The wait was longer than expected…the restaurant is using the Yelp waitlist but it seemed to be skipping folks and the estimated times were way off. We waited a little over an hour on a Saturday evening. It also notified us to return to the restaurant for our table nearly twenty minutes before our table was actually ready. This would’ve been frustrating if we had been on a timeline for the evening.
The environment inside is cozy and warm and energetic. Servers were friendly, but they don’t seem to have perfected the timing yet. My friend received his meal a good fifteen minutes before my curry arrived.
I ordered the panaang curry with jasmine rice and definitely enjoyed jt! The broth was delicious and the grilled shishito peppers were a great addition. Presentation was very nice as well. The duck on my curry was pretty good, but a little tough.
Overall, it’s a fun new spot in the neighborhood with good food, but there are kinks to work out in seating and timing. I’m not sure I would return for such a long wait. I would love to try the Kaya toast with ice cream — it looked delicious!!
Joined the wait-list through Yelp while finishing up a hike on San Bruno Mountain and was #9 with a 45 minute estimated wait. Managed to get some street parking next to the gas station about 30 minutes later. Waited about 15 minutes once we got there for our table to be ready. Loved the atmosphere. The restaurant was full but we did not feel cramped at all.
We ordered Spicy Wontons, Khao Pad Mun Nuer with Soy Cured Egg Yolk, Pad Thai Bolan With Crispy Chicken, and the Khao Soi with Crispy Chicken. Everything tasted great. The Khao Pad Mun Nuer was everyone's favorite by far. Looking forward to coming back again in the future!
I thought the food was the peak, and then the ice cream toast came and it is out of this world.
One of the best meals I've had in SF; don't skip the coconut ice cream dessert.
We went early on a weekday to avoid the crowd. An electrical outage hit the block 5 minutes after we sat down. They didn't skip a beat, and served delicious food (whole Branzino, duck curry). 6 other tables came in AFTER the outage and still sat down for dinner. Yet the service didn't slow down, even without much light.
The food is amazing here - I recommend the tofu curry, beef short rib fried rice and seafood pad cha! Excited to try other items in the future.
Do not recommend the wontons and Tom kha. They were just average.
This place gets BUSY so remember to join the Yelp waitlist beforehand. It’s also a small restaurant so it can get crowded and loud quickly.
We had the khao soi with tempura tofu, duck breast panang curry, and the fried oyster mushrooms. All 3 were absolutely delicious - the oyster mushrooms were nice and fresh with a light batter on them, the panang curry was rich and flavorful with perfectly cooked duck, and the khao soi had an incredibly complex and balanced flavor without being too heavy. If i could change one thing I would maybe get the duck skin slightly crispier, but this was still one of the best meals I’ve had this year and will definitely be coming back. The portions were very good as well. It did get pretty loud inside but we were here on a busy night.
Great add to West Portal. Food was delicious. Staff working hard. Word is out so very busy. Online waitlist. Be patient and you will be rewarded.
Great neighborhood addition, with a lot of potential.
Came here with my sister recently and was really excited since there has been a lot written up about this place. So glad to see a Thai restaurant in this neighborhood.
The space felt spacious and the decor was cool and reminiscent of a hip diner you might find in Bangkok. The servers were very nice and we were seated right away.
The menu had the usual suspects, sort of. The Pad Thai was deconstructed but was tasty.
We had the fried fish, Krawpow (pork) with egg, a dry khao soi and crispy papaya salad. The ingredients were good quality and the presentation was thoughtful. We were both disappointed that each dish was lacking a depth of flavor expected from these dishes. There was just something missing, and the flavor profile wasn’t quite there.
The crispy papaya salad was an interesting dish, almost like a Mee Krob. The fried fish was not executed that well, it seemed kind of thrown on the plate (it was bigger than the plate) and the sauce was hard to taste, and overall difficult to enjoy and handle. The other dishes were ok.
For our palate, it lacked the Thai flavors we expect from Thai food. It was almost as if the flavors were muted on purpose.
I think there’s a lot of potential
here but for the price and taste, I don’t know if I would come back soon. Perhaps there are other dishes that shine.
It was busy and there was a lot of takeout activity happening. I hope this restaurant can make some adjustments and be successful.
This such a lovely space with great and friendly service and, most importantly, creative and delicious food.
I also appreciate that menu items are clearly marked for vegan and gluten free, making it easier to navigate. I hope they eventually make their khao soi as a vegan version, so we can enjoy this northern Thai specialty.
They have different dishes than the normal thai food places in america (they also have the regulars too), I got to try new things and loved it!!
Our server recommended the fried papaya salad and it was good, no regrets. The Khao Pad Mun Nuer was my absolute favorite, will definitely be coming back for it. The stir fried khao soi was also delicious! We had the kaya toast for dessert, which was good but make sure to share because it's large and kinda heavy.
The servers were very nice and came by to check on us often. The food came out quickly. The tables were spacious. Even though it was very busy, we were seated right away. I will definitely come back here again!
Parking can be challenging in that area, but we got lucky by parking up the hill next to the elementary school.
Good and bad.
The good: food is really tasty, each dinner entree portion was easily shareable for 2 people. We had Tom Kha and Kra pow. Both really flavourful. Lychee
tea was good, so was the thai milk tea. The place is nice, atmosphere is loud and talkative.
The bad: service could use work, our server took our order and we never saw her again. There are a few people on the floor so the bigger tables will take away service quality(understandable) but that doesn't mean smaller tables should be ignored.
Lastly, I am not a fan of a Thai restaurant which doesn't serve fresh papaya salad. It is a mistake imo. Their fried papaya salad is not enjoyable, feels like eating fries. Dressing had a very yum flavor, so I absolutely don't understand why they would not serve fresh papaya.
Not worth the hype and wait time. The short ribs appetizer was a ripoff! A few pieces of beef for $20! Their curry was ok, not outstanding from other Thai places.
I believe the wait time will start going down once people have tried it once
Food is good but they didn’t seat us till 30 minutes even though there was enough table available. People who came 25 minutes after us were seated earlier than us.
Server didn’t ask how our food was.
Khao Tiew is a Thai restuarant located near the West Portal Station.
There was about a 20 minute wait when we went for two, and I recommend calling ahead for reservations for large groups. There is usually a 30 minute or so wait during the evening, but if you go right after they open, there is not really much of a wait. The inside was decorated nicely, and the servers were friendly and nice despite how busy the restuarant was.
We ordered the pad thai bolan with shrimp, pad thai bolan with crispy chicken, kra prow naeur toon, duck panang curry, and thai tea.
The thai tea had a stronger tea flavor and was not as sweet.
The menu recommends ordering the pork crisps with the pad thai, and I think it adds a nice crispy texture to the noodles and definitely agree on adding it to the dish. The pad thai was delicious! I tried the one with shrimp and the one with the chicken. The shrimp was large and fresh, and the chicken was fried and crispy. My favorite was the chicken and it added a nice texture to the noodles. The noodles were flavored well, and it was my favorite dish.
The duck panang curry was coconut-based, and the duck meat was very tender and soft. I ordered a side of jasmine rice to eat with the curry.
The appetizer kra prow naeur toon consisted of beef shank, and they recommended it medium rare. The meat was a a bit chewier than I preferred, but the homemade garlic and chili soy sauce went well with the meat.
The presentation of all the dishes were beautiful and added an extra level of enjoyment to them.
Overall, Khao Tiew is one of my favorite Thai places here! I really enjoy the presentation of the food and the dishes, as well. I will definitely be coming back for the pad thai and to try other dishes on their menu!
Incredible flavors! Cute and clean dining room. Great service.
We visited here on July 4th! We are from Georgia and had never been to California before. We searched and searched for the best Thai restaurant in the San Francisco area. We stumbled across this place and boy was I glad we did! This place was phenomenal from the service to the food. Their pad see eww was the BEST IVE EVER HAD!!! If we ever get the chance to visit California again, I’ll definitely be back!!!
Ordered the seafood pad. The sauce is so amazing that i can drink it up. Indeed the best thai restaurant ive been to so far
Sooooo good love this place
Such a nice restaurant with very kind staff. The Khao Soi with tofu was perfect and their specialty burnt toast with coconut ice cream was totally memorable and worth a repeat visit. Rather loud when the restaurant is full, but the food transports you to a calmer place.
Khao Tiew is a lovely, cute restaurant with excellent food and service. Parking is on the street and it is very near to the West Portal Muni Station. Our meal was amazing. The crispy papaya salad was delicious. We ate the roast duck breast rice dish and ground pork rice dish. The duck potion was generous and perfectly cooked. The pork was expertly seasoned and flavorful. All the veggie sides were fresh and crispy. For dessert we had coconut ice cream over a crispy "Texas toast" sprinkled with sugar green sauce. You must try this dessert! It was an absolutely amazing and unique sweet ending to our meal. Khao Tiew is a great place for a date night or evening out with friends. They have a nice alcohol selection to pair with their delicious food. Just go you'll love it here.
Not your average takeout joint. Loved the duck panang.
On a foggy night in West Portal, my friends and I stumbled upon a recently opened Thai restaurant. After reading some reviews, we decided to give it a try and put our name on the waitlist. It turned out to be well worth the wait - 20 minutes but once you smell this place, you’ll understand.
The food was so delicious that it silenced the table, not because of hunger but because of how much we were savoring each bite. I even had a moment of pure joy when I remembered my Thai tea.
I highly recommend this place to friends; you can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
Nice ambiance and great food. The duck curry was really tasty. But stay away from the seafood pad cha. The calamari was very chewy and distracted from the dish.
Nice and cozy
The new Thai spot on West Portal......is a major HIT. I can't reccomend it enough. I can't wait to go back and try the other dishes. The 'Drunken Mama' was one of the most delicious things I've ever had. And the Lychee Tea?!!!! Everything here illustrates passion and joy. Thank you, Khao Tiew!
Delicious, innovative Thai, fresh + very nice people!
Wonderful, Thai food. Unusual dishes and great service!
Khao Tiew is a wonderful restaurant addition to the West Portal neighborhood! I grew up in Bangkok, Thailand and can attest to the authenticity of flavors in all of their dishes. Each menu item is expertly crafted, with tasteful modern flairs while staying true to the original tastes.
The staff was welcoming and laid back, making you feel like you are joining a friend’s family for a meal at their house rather than a standard restaurant. The decor is well considered, welcoming, and VERY nostalgic of the simpler times of the 80’s/90’s Bangkok. Adding to the homely atmosphere.
All said, Khao Tiew is, in my estimation, easily in the top 5 Thai restaurants in San Francisco. The Khao Tiew folks earned my highest recommendation and I can’t wait for my next visit!
p.s. if you like Som Tum papaya salad, be sure to try their FRIED Som Tum 😋
Extraordinary new Thai spot
Absolutely amazing food! The tempura massuman curry was delicious! we ended with a great dessert which was huge but lip-smacking
My only gripe was the food took a long time to arrive, but it's a minor one given how delicious the food was. I'll definitely come here again.
Note that they have moved to wait-lists now instead of reservations for tables less than 6. Come early/anticipate a decent wait. they are that good!
Thank you for opening in our neighborhood! This place is a gem and the food is fantastic! There aren’t many 4 star Thai restaurants in the city. Farmhouse Thai is too expensive for what’s its worth. Other places like Marnee Thai are mediocre at best.
I’ve been here 3x since they’ve opened and the food is very consistent. The only thing I have feedback on is service. They gave a table for 6 to a party of 2 and a baby. Very inefficient of a 6 top! The party of 2 could have waited 10 more min for a 2 top to open up. Even after the table for 2 opened up they could have moved the couple. Just not efficient for front of house.
Other than that food is delicious! Check it out!
Came with a Thai friend. We were really excited to try this new spot, even more so after she mentioned the nostalgia for home from the wall decorations.
Unfortunately, our meal did not hit the spot.
Her longan juice didn't really taste of longan. It was just very sweet, unlike how she's used to it tasting in Thailand.
The fried squid of the Pla Muk Tod Sauce Kai Kem was tough. The salted egg yolk sauce was good - not great, not terrible.
Her Khao Pad Mun Nuer w Soy Cured Egg Yolk was lukewarm. The pieces of beef in the fried rice were very dry, she said the short rib meat was good. But ended up asking for hot sauce because she said it wasn't very flavorful. I noticed she'd used all of the sauce and she said it was because it wasn't very spicy.
My Khao Soi Pad Haeng was also not hot. But it was warm.
Nice presentation, but not the easiest to eat - there wasn't enough room in the bowl to mix the ingredients, and some of the pickled vegetable pieces were so big that I had to split them up into smaller pieces to be able to spread the love.
And, just like everything else, wasn't very flavorful. It wasn't bad, but it also didn't leave much of an impression.
The khao soi was absolutely incredible. So stoked to have Khao Tiew in the neighborhood. Highly recommend!
We are so lucky to have Khao Tiew in the neighborhood! Elevated Thai fare with some serious creativity, high quality ingredients, and attention to detail with execution. Warm service and lovely decor too.
Hands down best Thai food I’ve had in the city. New to the scene and bringing a fresh take on my favorite northern thai dishes. We got addicted to their farmers market stand fried rice (Sowl Bowls) and we were so excited they were able to manage to get their own restaurant.. and they did not disappoint, don’t sleep on it. Service is amazing so friendly.
This might be the best Thai I’ve had in the Bay Area.
Incredible Thai food with many menu options that aren't just your "typical" restaurant fare.
The stir-fried khao soi was incredible; I don't know if I've ever seen a soupless version of this dish before but it totally delivered on flavor.
They're very busy right now, so expect a bit of a wait if you come at peak times.
Really tasty new Thai restaurant serving authentic dishes not often found at other Thai restaurants. The Kraprow Moo Sab was really good - make sure to get it with the egg. Restaurant is transit-friendly as it’s just around the corner from West Portal Station. Looking forward to my next visit to try other menu items.
We came in on a Thursday evening. There were a few parties there - one larger party and a few smaller parties. Their menu had many gluten free and vegan options which is great if you have people in your party that have dietary restrictions. We were greeted warmly by staff and they brought us water and the menus promptly. They allowed us time to peruse the menu and never hovered and took our order when we were ready. The three items we ordered were all very tasty and flavorful. The short rib can be cooked to your preference. We chose medium rare. The meat, along with the noodles and basil and onions provided for a delicious dish. This dish along with the Krapow Moo Sab can be made spicy but because my dining companion can’t eat very spicy dishes, we opted for mild. The oyster mushroom appetizers were served with a sweet and sour sauce and fried well - not too much batter.
There was a consistent flow of patrons throughout the night and their staff regularly checked in on us. We never felt rushed. The restaurant is clean and we were able to enjoy our conversation as well as our meal.
Pla Tod Nam Pla was my favorite. Best authentic Thai foods!
