Welcome !
Rao Thai Eatery is a unique an an exclusive Thai restaurant to Elk Grove and Sacramento. The restaurant will furnished with decorations that will make customers feeling like home. Our perspective of the food we cook is not the same as other ordinary Thai food but instead it is a contemporary semi modern Thai style with real authentic taste.
Excellent food. They had fresh chopped Thai chili pepper in fish sauce as a condiment. They had the drunken noodle dish and Pad Kaprow with pork belly special. The special dish could feed two to three people for $20. My only complaint is the waitress told me it would cost extra for the pork belly. Most places charge $3-5 extra, which was what I was expecting. The bill showed an extra charge of $10.00. I thought that was a little excessive, but since it could feed at least two people, some could justify it. The pho noodles were cooked too long or left in the bowl too long before adding the soup, so they were clumpy but not a big deal. We got to the restaurant 45 minutes before closing. Definitely recommended.
A hidden gem tucked in a residential neighborhood, Rao's is a wonderful spot for some great Thai food. Not as large as some of the locations I frequent downtown, but very clean, great atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious standard and unique menu items. They have been in this location for years, but we only found them recently via a "what's nearby" search. I'm so glad we did! I've been back four times in the last two months, different dishes each time, with varying spice levels. I'm the type that enjoys "Thai 10/10" spice levels, but my family has much lower tolerance, necessitating a variety of dishes at different heat levels. No matter the heat, every dish has been wonderfully seasoned. The condiments caddy is a nice addition, and allows me to "kick it up a notch" when the mood suits me. I've been there for lunch and dinner several times, and even popped in for a quick chicken skins and beer while waiting for take out food at an adjacent restaurant! A great low-key date night stop that doesn't break the bank but offers a pleasant vibe and delicious menu. Rao Thai Eatery has definitely earned a place in our regular rotation.
Good place to eat. Food is very good. Have good options. I had the pumpkin curry w chicken and Thai Satay and Thai iced tea and a nice big bottle of water. I was pretty full at the end had to take the rest home. The curry was made with their Red Panang curry. Chunks of chicken and pumpkin were good. Had a big bowl of brown rice to go with it. Very hardy meal. The decor and the atmosphere are cool. I highly suggest you go here.
Rao Thai Eatery is an absolute gem tucked away in Elk Grove, and I had the pleasure of dining there recently. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere that set the stage for an incredible dining experience. As a senior data center engineer based in Silicon Valley, I value efficiency and precision, and Rao Thai Eatery delivered on both fronts.
Plus, I was fortunate to be served by a remarkable young lady who truly enhanced my dining experience. Her warm and friendly demeanor immediately put me at ease, creating a welcoming atmosphere that made my evening special.
The menu at Rao Thai Eatery offers a delightful array of Thai dishes, each packed with authentic flavors that transport your taste buds straight to Thailand. I had the Pad Thai, chicken skin deep fried, papaya salad, fried rice, ...and it was nothing short of spectacular. The balance of sweet, sour, and spicy flavors in the dish was perfect, and the quality of the ingredients was clearly top-notch.
But what truly set this restaurant apart was the outstanding service. The staff were not only attentive but also very knowledgeable about the menu. They were more than willing to provide recommendations and answer any questions I had about the dishes. Their friendly and casual approach made me feel right at home, and that's something I truly appreciate.
In addition to the delicious food and impeccable service, the ambiance of Rao Thai Eatery is charming. The decor, combined with soft lighting and Thai music playing in the background, created a cozy and inviting atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed dinner.
Overall, my dining experience at Rao Thai Eatery was exceptional. As a senior data center engineer, I can appreciate attention to detail and top-notch service, and this restaurant exceeded my expectations. If you're in Elk Grove or even just passing through California, do yourself a favor and visit Rao Thai Eatery. You won't be disappointed!
An outstanding Thai restaurant in Sacramento and Elk Grove. Each dish is full of flavor and the right amount of spice. Ingredients are of a higher quality than your standard Americanized Thai restaurant. Cozy seating with lots of art decorating the walls. Service is friendly and attentive.
I have eaten here three times in the past year. The first time I just had take out nothing special but the second time I ate in with a friend and had the cashew chicken which was very good.. so good my friend ordered a serving to take out for her husband! So last week I went back to get the same dish as take out, and when I got it home I discovered it was in a small plastic plate with a heat sealed plastic wrap cover, exactly like you would get at a grocery store in the freezer section. The portion was small, and the "chicken" was just chewy strings of something. The whole thing was so different from what I got as an eat in! But still cost almost $20. Buyer beware!
So good
Had Crying Tiger Steak and Pad Thai. Both excellent, and what's better is they provided a row of heat; basically, peppers, sauces, and dry ground chilies to tailor your pain. Excellent, and our new favorite Thai in Elk Grove!

I'm a huge fan of Thai foods and have been trying different places in the area. This restaurant may not have the best Thai dishes but you can find some very good ones in the menu, with slightly different taste from the other restaurants. The staffs are nice and the environment is so cozy. This is a great place to try.
Everything we ordered was delicious, the service was great and we really enjoyed the experience. We'll definitely be back.
Great authentic Thai food.. Staff were great and friendly too! Highly recommended!
We stopped at Rao Thai Eatery for lunch on the way to Tahoe and really enjoyed our food, the atmosphere of the restaurant and friendly staff. It was a bit further off of the freeway than a lot of other choices, but I’m glad we took the extra few minutes to eat here!
Great authentic Thai food. Staff were great and friendly too! Highly recommended!
Awesome place. First time, service was awesome food was great, first time eating Thai
Yellow curry was the best. Waitress was friendly and nice
Amazing! Great food and service. Much appreciated
Absolutely love this place. Love the food.
Been coming to this Thai restaurant for the last few years, definitely my go-to for Thai food. Highly recommend!
They got my takeout order wrong 4x in a row. I will not be returning.
Had an issue with my plate of food, however owner & service had very nice hospitality and resolved my issue. Very kind people and great customer service. I appreciate the great attitude regardless of the situation , this just shows they put their customers first. Thank you.
Just stellar in every way!
Found new Thai place in elk grove
As always, impeccable service, amazing food, and a great atmosphere. Everyone there is friendly, helpfully, and really wants you to have the best dining experience.
I highly recommend the yellow curry and chicken satay.
Authentic Thai Meals at great value! If you ever find yourself in the area definitely make the trip because its gonna be worth it.

It is just ok nothing special especially for the price
Great low key, local place. They’re always improving which is super cool to see.
Food was okay. Won't go back due to poor service. They serve water in cute tin cups. We were given plastic cups. I asked why and was told that they ran out, even though people who came in after us didn’t get plastic. We were the only Black customers. Hmmmm
Very good Thai restaurant in a somewhat random part of elk grove
The boat noodles is good and the papaya salad platter are my go to options
Hot take but maybe best Thai restaurant in elk grove if you don't want to venture out to South sac
Nice atmosphere, good food, quick orders.
Food is not bad but a bit pricey compared to other Thai restaurant in town. Their plates are plastics 😳 why ??? Looks cheap.
Some standout dishes, some ok dishes, and some that definitely need improvement. Quite spicy dishes so start with mild. Decent overall but be prepared for a mixed bag.
Good: Nam Khao, Laos Papaya Salad (if you like fish sauce), Regular Papaya Salad, Tom Kha, Pork Jerky, Crispy Pork, drinks
Ok: Kao Yum Kai (crispy chicken in tamarind sauce), Pad Thai (noodles were slightly undercooked), Drunken Noodles (decent if a bit oily), Tom Yum (too sweet for my taste), Boat Noodles (broth not my personal taste), Pumpkin Curry
Not great: Basil Fried Rice (very undercooked rice, some kernels were hard), Pad See Ew (on the bland side)

Great vibes, great place, good customer service, and food was pretty good. On a sign by the door, it states that a party of 6 or more will have tip added onto the total cost. It wasn’t until after my family and I had left that we realized our party of 5 got tip charged onto our bill. Just be aware.
Came here for Thai boat noodle, but was more impressed by the lao papaya salad instead. Definitely one of the best papaya salad I've had.

One of the best places for delicous Thai Boat Noodles in Elk Grove, hands down. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff!
We love this local restaurant! We haven't eaten at the restaurant, but we've gotten takeout many many times. We have ordered through the website and by calling in. We are able to customize the spice level for almost every dish, which is really helpful.
Our favorites are the pad Thai, avocado curry, pineapple fried rice, coconut rice, and chicken h$ll (chicken wings not found on the menu), and the chicken satay.
I found a dead fly in my yellow Thai curry as I was almost done eating it. This has to be the most horrific thing that’s ever happened to me while dining out. The staff asked me if I wanted a new one, but absolutely not! Throw away the whole pot if anything. I lost my appetite. The staff apologized and didn’t charge me for the meal. I understand it was probably an accident as the weather is warm and flies just tend to buzz it’s way around… but I’m just traumatized that I ate most of it before discovering that dead fly in my curry. I will not be a returning customer. I can’t get it out of my head. Flies are so disgusting to me. I can’t even eat my food when a fly lands on it, but to find a dead one in it is a whole different story.
Awesome food and even better people there that treat you right! This is my all-time favorite spot for thai food out in Elk Grove, hands down! The staff there are super friendly and it adds to the experience. If you're looking for that spot in Elk Grove you MUST GO HERE!!!
My cousin Mike had a horrible experience with the owner Sammy. Mike found out Sammy was cheating on Jeeranuch (Sammy wife) with his girlfriend and Sammy was taking her there when the restaurant closed so they can do it inside the restaurant. I wouldn't trust the cleanliness of that restaurant after finding out what they've done in there. Sammy knew she had a bf and was teaching her what to say so they can secretly keep seeing each other and he lied to her that his marriage was fake and only married for a visa to stay in the USA. You can visit his FB or IG under Mikehoang8888 for proof.
BEST THAI FOOD EVER, The place looks a little wierd on the inside, The servers we had werent the best but the Food was amazing. I got the platter tostart and love getting the green curry
Be careful of the “bang bang” sauce there.
Nicely done decor and menu. Recommend.
Rao never disappoints in the food and service! Yellow curry level 5 spice was absolutely amazing. My 1 year old absolutely loves eating here. And the crying tiger! I HIGHLY recommend this spot! Definitely would love to have them cater for my wedding.
10/10 the wonton soup is amazing and the pad see ew was out of this world 🌎 😍
On the menu Thai Boat Noodles is $12.50, but the server charge $15 for the noodle. The server reasoning was that we order beef so it’s additional $2.50 which wasn’t presented on the menu stating additional cost for meat choices. The male server wasn’t very helpful, set down for 20 minutes without any type of service provided. PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS FOR HIDDEN PRICE ADDED ON YOUR RECEIPT AT THE EBD OF YOUR MEAL AND I ADVISED THAT YOU CHECK YOUR RECEIPT BEFORE YOU PAID.
Best Thai food in the Sacramento area!!
I don't like leaving bad reviews but everything was dry. The chicken wings were over cooked. The pork belly was over cooked & surprisingly the sticky rice was over cooked. The flavors were OK tho & they had good chicken satay & the chicken skin was good.
This is some of the best Thai food I have ever had. The Drunken Mama is my favorite. Their curry dishes are also great. I highly recommend Rao Thai Eatery.
Authentic Thai food, everything tasted good, small store, Thursday dinner was busy
Good service, amazing food, the environment is amazing. I will coming back.
Good was little bit salty. But we'll cooked and toffu was cooked to perfection.
The boat noodles very so delicious the flavor of the broth was amazing. There mango crepes was amazing and very delicious 😋. I love this restaurant I'll definitely will be going back there again.
Had the Laos style papaya salad, cream cheese wonton and shrimp glass noodle salad. Papaya salad sucks nothing like Laos style. Fried wonton soggy.
Ordered boat noodle, the price on the menu says $12 but the bill says $21. The waitress says the menu is old and the new price is $21
Really? And it sounds like this is not her fist time saying it.
And the taste was okay definitely not worth $21!
They open at 12:00. We got here 12:05. We waited over an hour, no foods. No one came to ask or say anything while waiting. I only have an hour lunch break. Ended up we switched to to-go. I was starving and wasted my precious one hour just sitting there with no foods.
I just want to let the customers that go to RAO that by California law the Fire Extinguisher must be inspected and certified once a year. The own of this establishment has chosen to ignore this law so as of Aug 3rd 2022 will be operating as a illegal establishment. If there were to be a fire and people were injured the case would move from liable to negligent. The general attitude of the owner when approached to service the Fire Extinguishers was "I'll Pass" on obeying the laws.
Just a word of caution before entering this establishment.
Got papaya salad. It says Laos style. It’s nothing compare to Laos. Sorry your papaya is not good. So much fish sauce with pepper only. Nothing compare to your picture you post in your site.
Food tasted good the first time we got there. The second time, not so great, less options to choose from.
Great food and wonderful yet mysteriously underutilized outdoor dining area.
Falls very short of the average Thai eatery expectation. Got the yellow curry, pineapple curry and tom kha soup. Feels like the food was made to order from instant or other curry sauces. Lack even the average taste that we have started to expect. I would skip this place next time or try something else.
So glad we decided to make the 30 min drive to this place. Was craving boat noodles, and they did not disappoint. Very flavorful! We also had fried wontons (barely any cream cheese), Lao style papaya (in my personal opinion it tasted more like Thai style), oyster shooter (freaking delicious but 3.50 for one shooter), and mango sticky rice (Yumm)
Very personable and accommodating.
I typically go to Rao at least once a week whether I’m ordering out or eating in. I’ve never had any issues with the food or service until today. I ordered two pad thai orders via their online ordering system and received probably the worse service ever. I picked up my order: one I had requested to be spicy and the other mild. Once I came home and opened the plates, I realized neither were spicy like I had requested. Being someone who goes their frequently and orders the same dish, I knew my order was incorrect. I called Rao and spoke with “Bella” around 4 pm today. I told her I put in an online order and one order was made incorrectly. She asked what the issue was and informed her that one was not made spicy as I had requested. She told me that it is normal for it to not be made spicy even though I had requested it to be spicy. She said that I could throw some spicy sauce on it and it would be the same as being cooked spicy or next time I went in, she would provide me with a spicy sauce to put on my pad Thai. I told that in my previous experiences at Rao or any other Thai restaurants, I was never told to just “throw some spicy sauce in it”. Then she told me that the cooks will purposefully make it mild because people call and complain their food is too spicy. I told her that I have never had those issues and then she started interrupting me and cutting me off saying that there’s nothing for her to do. I told her offering me hot sauce or making excuses does not compensate for my order not being made correctly. Then she said “so what do you want me to do? Obviously you think I’m making excuses about your food”. I said “ma’am I called to let you folks know my order was made incorrectly. So if you stop cutting me off…” and then she cut me off again and stated “I’m not cutting you off. You want the order again? I’ll make a mild one..okay bye.” And hung up the phone on me. Then I called again and said “ma’am why did you hang up on me?” And she said “must’ve gotten disconnected” while telling the cooks I wanted a mild pad Thai. I said “ma’am, I told you my spicy pad Thai needs to be made again. Please stop cutting me off. I’m just asking for this to be fixed. You didn’t even provide me an ETA”. And she said “I’m not cutting you off. You have to wait 30 mins, we can’t expedite your order..we have others to serve first”. She was just so rude for no reason. I run a bakery and I have been stressed, working alone yet I would never be this rude to a customer. I will no longer be going to Rao. This woman Bella made me feel uncomfortable for asking for a mistake by the restaurant to be fixed even though I was asking politely. I didn’t even ask for my money back. That is no way to act with a customer. Please support a business that provides better customer service.
Good food.. great place to go and enjoy great good..
I ate here with my wife and her family. The food was ABSOLUTELY delicious. The taste and smell of the food made me miss Thailand. If you're looking for authentic Thai food, this is THE ONLY place I'd recommend to you.
Hours on Google Yelp and their website are inaccurate, please update.
Delicious food and friendly workers
Service was 50-50, one server was sort of rude. Other than that food was still delicious that I would go again
The food are awesome
Worst Thai food I have ever eaten. The drunken noodles had very little chicken, one tiny slice of a bell pepper and a few onions. Additionally, it was a very small portion and extremely greasy. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Although I live very close to this establishment, I will travel to get better food.
Authentic Thai food. Spice level 10
Amazing food! Friendly service.
I tried this place for the 1st time. It was a total disappointment. The brown rice was rice mush, failure on an Asian restaurant. The potato in our curry was not cook all the way.
I was super excited to try this place so it was a huge bummer that my experience wasn’t so great. The calamari was super tough and it was really hard to eat. I got the pad Thai but in my opinion, the plates were too big and nothing really stood out. I ended up leaving with more food than I was able to eat there because of how much food was on the plate. Maybe if I got a different appetizer and a different entree, my experience could have been better.
Felt like they were rushing us to leave but we ordered a lot of food. Didn't even have enough time to finish it, some plates were untouched. Had to pack all of it to go because they were rushing us out of there.
Boat noodle was good. Would come back again for that dish. Don't get the papaya salad tray, it was disappointing for $20. The white pork sausage is really pork meatloaf (was expecting actual sausage) and the deep fried pork was dry with not much seasoning. The papaya itself was good.
Delioues food, friendly atmosphere. Really good service.
Not super authentic but tasty nonetheless
Place has some cool decor, but the food was really bland. The only flavoring was with salt. I felt incredibly dehydrated afterward. For the price, I really expected more.
Food is decent. Thai Boat noodles is to go to dish.
I came here for take out. I usually order delivery. Service was friendly but inattentive and there was quite a few of us awkwardly hanging about because it's not clear who to talk to or where to go get someone to greet you. Food was oddly overcooked this time -- some parts of my crab fried rice was burnt.
Food is great, service is great. I love the salmon larb.
Food is good. My kids love it. Just a little overpriced
Food and service was great. Would have liked the inside seating area to be a little cleaner. Floors were really dusty due to some construction out front.
This is the most amazing Thai food I have ever eaten!
Flavorful, great portion sizes, and so super yummy.
Tasty food. Personable service.
Food is great! Staff are friendly. I would definitely come back!
Delish! And wonderful environment and staff. Cute and cozy. Can't wait for next time. We will be regulars!
I would rate it higher if I could. The freshest ingredients I've had in a long time. Fantastic options and their sauces are one of a kind. First time here but not the last
We haven't been here in a while and forgot how EXCELLENT the food is! We will be back soon!
We used to live a few blocks away and when we lived nearby, we went to this place all the time. My kids love the boatnoodles so everytime we're back in EG, we just had to stop by. During Covid-19, dine in was closed and we couldn't really do take out since we don't have a place to eat at but they accommodated us and let us eat in their patio area. It was about 90 degrees out and they had a fan blowing to keep us cool. Very friendly servers and of course food was always to our standards. FYI, I was anemic when I was pregnant with them so I had a lot of boatnoodles as well since I don't eat much meat so maybe this is why they love it too 😃
Very unique and inspiring food I have eve seen.
customer service was off the charts best boat noodle I ever had served by 2 beautiful women.
Very flavorful food and kind staff
We absolutely love this place !!!! Food is great (it’s more of a fine type Thai food instead of a street-ish type - like other Elk Grove Thai place) but the service is even better!!! They make you feel like family. Also, very kid friendly !!!! My 8 year old and 4 year old love the chicken Pat-see-Yu !
Great selection of Thai and other specialties on the menu. It's a popular location on the weekends, so arrive early. Live music, karaoke and entertainment from talented local artists and musicians.
Good food and nice casual atmosphere.
Boat noodles are a Must!!! Service was average. No to the oyster shooter and chicken skin was ok but I could've lived without.
bland
Awesome food to eat, very nice decor!
Very good pork crispy
Excellent meals and service
Great food and people are great.
If you like spicy food this is the place to eat.
Food and services are very good. If u like spicy, u need tell them.
Get the fried chicken skin!!!
Amazing food. Best Thai food we've ever eaten.
It was really good! Way better than thai chili
Dont eat here the salad was dryout the dressing Ugh!!...the wonton soup tasted like left over I put it in the refrigerator...next day it was sour. Food is not fresh
Great food tasty
Very very very slow service in peak dinner times. Great staff and great food otherwise
Nice vibe
อาหารไทย หลากหลายเมนู อร่อย
Had Pad Thai with shrimp and Combination Fried Rice which tasted great. Portions seemed a tad small to okay for the price. Not a fan of having tails left on shrimp...why leave them on?
Great food, pricing and portions. The owner and staff are very friendly, and accommodating.
My Daughter Family came from the Bay Area, we when today at Four PM. They Love everything they order. From Apetizer To Meals And Desert also Drinks.
Food was fresh and yummy. Weirdly there was no pineapple in the pineapple fried rice but it was still well a well made dish that I enjoyed. Took a while to get the check, had to get up and ask for boxes after sitting and staring at the waiter for quite a while, the employees were sorta just chillin amongst themselves for long periods of time but ultimately when they realized we were done they did come clear the table and make sure everything was ok.
Their dish are not as flavorful as other thai restaurants I have been to. Their Loas papaya salad is on the salty side.
Good panang curry. Okay Mango and sticky rice. Will go back again. Service was okay. Only one person seemed to both host, waiter and bus boy. Parking easy. Nice atmosphere.
New favorite Thai restaurant
Cute restaurant. The food was pretty good. Overall good experience. Would definitely go back.
