Snug, enduring bar & eatery with a tropical feel offering country-style Thai fare & live folk music.
Might have found my new go-to place in Davis. You can tell how authentic a Thai restaurant is from how good their Pad Kra Pao dish is made. And Sophia’s did it perfectly from the ingredients to the taste. They even topped it off with a Thai style fried egg. Sorry for the picture being a little dark as we had to sit in the outdoor rented seating cause inside was full even on a weekday.
The Sampler appetizer was delicious as well and comes with 3 different sauces for each dish.
As a person who loves Thai food, I’ll surely return the next time I’m back in Davis.
Hands down my favorite Thai restaurant! It is a must on my list when in Davis. The Heavenly Beef is well, heavenly 😇 Cashew chicken and Peppe Stir Fry are my go to's for main course Portions are big enough to have leftovers (for me) Wednesdays are a good night as it's half price wine night. All of this while sitting outside makes it perfect.
Me and my fiancé wanted a nice dinner out. We got there thankfully got seated instantly, although there were plenty others getting sat after us and getting their orders placed as well as their drinks. We sat there for 15 minutes before they could even look our way and even consider getting us our beverages at least. The others sat around us were white and we were the only ones present with color. The environment was quite racist towards us mainly our waiter. Very unsatisfied with the environment they presented. Eventually the kind guy who cleans up the dishes saw we had nothing and brought us the water. No doubt the food was amazing but the service was poor.
After having way too many meals in LA's Thai town, we've gotten a bit particular about the food and were leary based on the mixed reviews. We weren't disappointed when we ordered some favorites: green papaya salad (surprisingly only slightly spicy), pad woon sen (good noodles with a refreshing citrusy sauce), gratium (garlic and pepper pork). Plus, we enjoyed new dishes like the nam Khao (sour pork with a good kick of heat) and spicy eggplant. For those who wanted more heat, the condiment tray with the chilies in fish sauce did the trick 🔥. The funky decor is fun too.
What a sad experience-usually so good-pra nam lunch special was raw spinach, salad dressing and really tough deep fried strange chicken bits-no rice or egg roll just a big plate of leaves-really bad eggplant dish with salty sauce-no spice or flavor plopped on a plate. The chef needs to watch what leaves the kitchen. Other dishes were looking fine -don’t know what happened!
The food here is very good, very very good, and every serving plate and bowl is heaped with food. It's a small restaurant inside with a large outside patio. We got there early (5:15), and it was already busy, but the servers make sure to check at every table frequently, and they remove empty appetizer plates and drink glasses quickly.
Our appetizers, curry dish, and other dishes were all delish. The curry and other main dishes were served in large portions. We shared it all family-style, and we all could dish alot from each item.
I've never posted before, but we also came to Davis this last week and tried another restaurant that was so disappointing I just had to review it to warn others. Then I thought I'd review Sophia's also to give them the good review this place deserves.
The food here is consistently fabulous. It was busy - every table was full inside and out, but they were well staffed with friendly and attentive servers and bussers, and we were want for nothing.
Appetizers: This time, chicken satay (4 skewers and the chicken was not dry or stringy, like I've had at other places) and Heavenly Beef (fried just right and a good portion for 2 to share).
Mains: I usually have green curry and brown rice at every Thai restraunt. It's called Jungle Curry here, and it is yummy. Hubby always tries something new, and we share the two main dishes.
The mains are always very generous servings, enough for three to share family style.
This time, hubby had the Seafood Medley, which was chocked full of calamari, snapper, large shrimp, snow peas, other veggies, and that great green curry.
Since his had green curry, I tried the 3 Flavor Fish, and I am so glad I did. The dish was full of large and small pieces of red snapper (cooked just right), plenty of mushrooms, colorful peppers, and a tasty sauce.
When sharing family style, one bowl of brown rice is plenty for two.
Sorry, no photos. The food looked and smelled so good that we dug in before we thought about pics.

Don’t recommend this place at all. I been coming here from the past 4 years. But after this day I won’t come again. I highly recommend any other place in Davis
Great food in a friendly atmosphere. They also have an outdoor heated seating area.
Great food, always consistent. Quirky layout but good energy
For the place the food is quite expensive. Food taste was bland. Portion size and taste for tom kha soup was did not meet expectations.
A staple in davis! Stop by here always from trips up to sac/reno/tahoe. The food is always spicy and warms the belly on our winter trips. I almost always get the thai tea. Heated lamps with sealed outdoor patio, super dog friendly! Sadly they used to serve dessert but no more. Highly recommend
Great meal and very good value. Highly recommended.
TARGETED/PROFILING
Earlier today 12/14 around 12am me (an African-American woman) came with three other friends who also are people of color. Security checks our ID when we arrive and gives us a stamp. Not even 5 minutes we are all at the bar about to order drinks....then the SAME exact security guard comes with his flashlights saying "I need to see all of your ID's again" which seems racist and targeted as well when we just showed him our ids. I asked him why only us? He said nothing. Then says sorry sorry trying to play victim after we all decided to leave this uncomfortable place. I'm noticing there's no other people of color at the place either and we are the once's and the only ID's he checked twice. WILL NEVER COME BACK HERE. I suggest the owner get a new security guard.
The ambience was quiet and pleasant but the food didn't compare to Thai Canteen which is next door
Great Thai food.

The DJ had excellent taste in music. I couldn't help but dance until I was out of breath.
Es un buen lugar, lindo habiente pasamos un rato agradable genial para conversar, ese día había presentación de música en vivo
Todo muy bien
Reliably good Thai food, every time. Great place to bring visitors.
better than expected. we really like the food, very tasty and clean
There were three of us that came from Vacaville to try some where new. We looked up your hours on your website and it said you closed at three for lunch. Upon arrival which was 1:55, we were told by the hostess that they would be closing in 5 minutes so we had to sit down and order right away. We asked if we had enough time to eat the meal, she said yes. Not 2 minutes later she comes back to the table to inform us that we had exactly 2 minutes left to order because they were closing the kitchen. We told her we felt unwanted in their establishment and left. I hope the owner has deep pockets because they didn't care at all that we left and said nothing to our reply of not feeling welcome. We will NEVER return to this eatery.
Another fun place to go in Davis. We only had a pork dish and the lettuce wrap along with two cocktails. The servers are good looking and efficient. This place is bustling.
A favorite for 25 years! So delicious.
It was really a disappointing experience as I had visited the place with my family for a special dinner, few days ago.The service was terrible and the food was not good enough. The food didn't taste well and the fish had a really bad smell and tasted like raw.The atmosphere was the only thing that we liked but the place is really small enough to have a proper dinner.Hopwfully they would improve their service and food.
The bartender was very friendly in making me a mocktail so thanks for that. However their open mic night was COMPLETELY ruined by allowing people to smoke on the patio. Supposedly this is legal after 9 because they stop serving food. I can't imagine being a singer and trying to perform and draw in big breaths while being bombarded by toxic smoke. I can't even handle it while not singing. How are people with asthma or smoke and scent sensitivities, or just people who don't want secondhand smoke exposure, supposed to participate? Why can't the smokers walk a few feet away? I am shocked and disappointed by this addiction-enabling and uninclusive practice.
Fantastic food, first time. My daughter Graduated and she took the Family & Friends. Music was great aswell. GO UC DAVIS.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🥰
The food is very nice and the service excellent. Unfortunately, like so many restaurants, Sophia's is extremely noisy. The decibel count inside was about 80 the time I went there. It was better outside but I imagine many customers would be unwilling to brave the 90-plus degree heat to escape the noise.
Nowadays it is well known that repeated loud noise affects one's hearing and general health as well. A recent article in the Washington Post makes all this clear. I hope that Sophia's takes some simple noise-buffering steps to ensure that their clients and their excellent servers don't suffer harm.
The food was smashing good. The dishes were amazing. Only downside is the very uncomfortable seating. Everything else was incredible.
We order Thai fried rice. It was so bad. Seems like chef was American and no idea how to cook Thai food.

Food good, service slow
Nice Thai Food!!!
This will be the last time I will be going to Sophia's. I've been going for over 20 years and this was our GO TO place in Davis for the past 10 years.
The last 3 times we have visited the food has been a horrible. I don't know if it was sold or the chefs need to be replaced but it's not worth going to any longer.
The noodles are overcooked, bland and broken the satay is very overcooked and tough and the fried rice is not even fried or properly mixed. It was mushy, waaayyyy underflavored and the meat was not even marinaded.
I wish it would go back to the way it was but that's not going to happen. I'm afraid it's far too expensive to justify such bad food.
So goodbye Sophia's! There are far too many good restaurants in Davis to visit your establishment again.
If I could have I would have gone back tonight and RETURNED this food and gotten my money back.
Nice vibe.
I've heard mixed opinions about Sophia's Thai Kitchen--some people like it and some people like to hate on it. From a food perspective, a common opinion amongst Davisites is that the coconut milk is watered down. (I found the peanut sauce to be too sweet, but I recognize that I prefer savory peanut dishes.) From an atmosphere perspective, it is a fun spot. The restaurant and patio are maze-like so there are a lot of nooks and crannies. Ultimately, I think Sophia's shines in its drink menu, and has a respectable Thai menu with many vegetarian options.
Expensive AF but curry was super good but did not come with a side of rice which was annoying, pineapple friend rice was alright could have been better. If u got money try it out was good
Fantastic Eggplant!
My true test of a Thai restaurant is their eggplant dish. I order it with soft tofu and the dish at Sophia's was perfect (but not quite enough eggplant). The Won Ton Soup was also delicious; unfortunately, the Pad Thai was a bit dry and bland. Our server was efficient and didn't hover. Suggest bringing pillows to sit on as the wood benches are uncomfortable. Definitely recommend.
Large portion of food but not cheap. I got a meal takeout for $20 but ate it over two meals. The food taste good.
Yum
We thoroughly enjoyed food and service at Sophia's Thai Kitchen.
Dishwise rating:
(1) Spring roll-4/5(outer layer very crispy)
(2) Veggie bean fritters-2.5/5( taste was okay)
(3)Tom Kha and Tom Yum soup-4/5
(4) Panang stir fry-4/5
Excellent cuisine and excellent bar. My favourite place in Davis.
First time at Sophia's Thai Kitchen. It is set back a little from the street. Good atmosphere. Very attentive wait staff. We had the sampler appetizer and Chicken Pad Thai. Both were very tasty.
Delicious red snapper curry and spring rolls
Great food and a friendly atmosphere
Food was good and drinks were very good. Our server was great!
The inside was really hot and dark. The drinks were good and the masaman curry was good, except the pineapple was kind of weird. The glass noodles were not good, they were too harsh and smelled kind of bad, plus they gave us the wrong kind of meat. Also I’m pretty sure they included the tip in the bill but didn’t tell us, so we ended up spending more than we intended.
Great bar and eating areas to host large or small group gatherings.
I was in Davis for two weeks and every pub was closed after 21.00.
Sophia is really special! Opened until 1 am, very friendly! Super beers, interesting things to do every night!
Reccomended🔝
For many years, this is been one of the best restaurants in Davis. The bosses favorite Curry and the corn fritters are amazing.
Great ambiance and service. Food was very good. Soup portions are huge though wish they had a smaller option
Service was terrible, cold waiters and ignore you. Waited for food for an hour and gratuity was included in the check despite horrendous service. Overall, not worth it at all. Dumpling House next door is way better.
I've been frequenting Sophia's for almost 20 years. The inside bar, which is separated from the actual restaurant, has a quaint island vibe going on inside. There's also seating on the front patio, nice for larger groups, or for just chilling with a drink and watching the passersby. The staff is friendly and accommodating. I can honestly say I have yet to order any food items that I didn't like. If you like your Thai food a little, or a lot, hotter just let them know. You'll have a nice time here!
Really nice place in the middle of a courtyard surrounded by other small local eats. Food was good but we would just recommend the kitchen to cut up in half the cherry tomatoes that are cooked in with the fried rice because if someone is not careful and just takes it whole it can burst flaming hot juice in someone's mouth. Staff was very friendly and the entire experience overall was pleasant.
I agreed to meet a friend in Davis for a meal. The friend lives in Davis and recommended the restaurant as vegetarian/vegan friendly. This restaurant is about half a block from free public parking in Davis so getting there was not hard as it's close to Richard's and 80. It has outdoor and indoor seating and the setting is interesting as one has to search for the entrance among other shops and restaurants. The food itself was delicious and the service was prompt and courteous. I will return.
Great food, service, and wonderful weather to enjoy their outside seating!
Decent thai food, huge portions. One side of rice is enough for two dishes
Nice place, good service,, lunch special food is good.
Excellent service, atmosphere, and flavorful food. I wish I could get it spicy—please disregard this review if you don’t like spicy food. I would come back here, unless I find a local Thai restaurant that can serve Thai hot food.
Unfortunately I could not get it Thai hot. They do have a spice rack, however it’s not the same as the Thai chili (50,000-100,000 Scoville). Spice racks add vinegar or other flavors to the meal, and I stopped adding dry chili flakes after 1-2 tablespoons. I used all the other wet chili spices until the flavor started to turn (which ended up making it a spice level of 3 or 4 out of 5, Thai hot being a 10). The server was very accommodating and even spoke with the kitchen to ensure it came hot. I promised to not return anything, if it were too hot I’d take it home, and that would be great if it were too hot (I do everything to convince restaurants to make it crazy spicy). Thai hot came about as hot as a mild jalapeño (2,500-8,000 Scoville), and I’d prefer it 15 to 25 times hotter than that. People often say hot food has no flavor, but I find that it to be opposite. Plus the endorphins provided by hot food is the best. I’ll update my review to five star if I’m ever successful in getting it Thai hot.
Had a great time at the bar and restaurant. The food was amazing!
Lunch in April was good. Dinner last night was awful. Thai stir fry (with chicken) had plenty of vegetables but hardly any flavor. The chicken was overcooked as well. The fish in three flavor fish tasted like it had been fried at lunchtime and reheated, and the sweet and sour sauce it came in was anemic. Service was fine, and the outdoor patio is nice. But oh the food...
Good food, great atmosphere. Dog-friendly too!
I was surprised that we had to pay 3.00 extra for white rice with our curry dish. The pad Thai was pretty much just noodles and not much sauce flavor or veggies!!
Ate outside. 100% satisfied in all categories! Hadn't been there for years and don't remember it being this great but will go more often now for sure. Yum!
Drinks were alright, but food was bland and underwhelming.
Nice ambiance n staff
The food was extremely salty.
I actually could not eat it!
I ordered the yellow curry and the crab wonton appetizer to go
One of the best Thai restaurants I've been to and I've been to quite a few. I ordered Boss's Favorite Green curry with tofu (1st time trying green curry) and it was very good. Pad thai and ginger curry were also very good. Service was a little on slow side but atmosphere was really nice (and they were busy) so we didn't mind.
2021:
Sophias used to be one of my favorite bars due to its cozy atmosphere, but my recent experience there has left me and my friends with no desire to return. Unfortunately, the blonde bartender working that night was incredibly rude and unprofessional towards us. Towards the end of the night, as one of my friends was making their way to the bathroom while wearing a mask, the bartender suddenly started yelling about a nonexistent "vomiter" and aggressively attacked my friend as soon as they exited the bathroom. Despite not finding any evidence of vomit and all of us being sober, the curly-haired bartender also joined in on the yelling. I was left in complete shock by the appalling behavior we experienced that night. Needless to say, I will never be going back to Sophias.
After the incident at Sophias, my friend contacted the owner to report the bartender's behavior. The owner promised to investigate the situation, but the outcome was unexpected. The owner called back and told my friend that they were no longer welcome at the bar and then hung up when pressed for more information. This response left all of us confused and bewildered. My friend was devastated by the unfounded accusation and the unprofessional conduct of the establishment.
Another member of our group tried to complain but was met with a dismissive response of "this has been dealt with internally." We offered to support our friend as witnesses. We all agreed that we could no longer patronize a bar that condones such behavior towards its customers. We have not visited Sophias since this incident occurred.
Convenient covered patio, cozy. Mari O offered smiles and good service. Food was excellent , portions large and price reasonable. We'll be back!
Lovely patio seating but each time we’ve been here, the flavor is completely lacking. Maybe would be good if you’ve never had Thai before? More salty than flavorful. Sadly, won’t be back.
Great food, friendly servers, and an intimate, well decorated interior. Pad se ew and pomegranate lemon drop are to die for. 10/10
One of the best places in Davis for Thai food! Heavenly beef is a great shareable appetizer.
Great local place and hidden gem in town.
I wished we lived closer. I would visit way more often
Excellent food and the best bar in Davis
there are better thai restaurants....
Five stars as a restaurant. Five stars as a bar.
Obsessed! Love the pad Thai and soup!
Some of the best Thai Food that I've ever had!!! Free refills on Thai tea!!! And the best service I've had in years!!! Great waitresses and staff!!!
Waited for table for more than 1 h, waited for food another 30 min. I am never coming back
Super good. I can't believe I haven't gone here sooner.
Great food and service
Don't sit near the bar to eat, in spite of no smoking laws. People sit out there and smoke, not only tobacco but also weed. The food is always great here, sit in the tent or the restaurant and enjoy.
Great atmosphere, delicious food, and a good selection of drinks. Believe them when they say something is spicy. I had the seafood medley and it was delicious, it was enough food for 2-3 people
The food was very good. I ordered online at 4:30 pm for pickup at 6:15. Upon arrival at that time, the staff person says it will be another ten minutes. So I come back after 10 minutes and still not ready & it will be another 10 minutes. I wait about 10 more minutes. Food finally is done. No apologies, just we're running late. Person at counter (Collin so?) was basically rude when I questioned why the order was not ready 1 hour and 45 minutes after I preordered. He told me he could not tell me when the food would be done. That he could only tell me it when it's done after it's done. Ok, food was pretty good, but customer service severely lacking.
Good place to get a fancy mixed drink
One of my favorites!
Sophia's has nice atmosphere and good food. The cocktails are very nicely crafted. It's not too loud, nice for a date. The food is not spicy enough for my liking and the curry is a bit on the watery side, but still tasty fresh food.
Always great options and cocktails at Sophia’s!
Good place for Thai food
The atmosphere is great and the service and food is always on point! Plus reasonable prices, what's not to love.
Best Thai food in Davis in my opinion!
Wonderful bar and food
I’ve got to Sophia’s a number of times but recently the service has been pretty unpleasant at times. What really bothers me though is my most recent attempt to order for pickup. I ordered a soup and stated a wheat allergy with the order (I always state this allergy and have been served this dish many times recently). The kitchen called and said there is a problem and that they can’t make me the soup with my limitation. They said the only thing they could do is heat up water coconut milk plain. I asked if I could change my order and I was told I would have to decide between the watered down coconut milk, or cancel the entire order. Oh and then they still charged me and I had to call again!
I have a number of issues with this, most notably that I’ve been served the same dish in the past, so either I have been served unsafe food on multiple occasions, or the kitchen was being extremely rude and upset with me for having an allergy. I don’t have an issue with being told no, but the whole exchange was unpleasant.
Finally, I’m well aware of the ingredients of the dish ordered, and I cannot think of any reason why this dish would have wheat under normal circumstances- that’s why I ordered it.
Yummy curry
I’ve been here many times over the years, and the service and food are fine.
But when I went there with a friend recently, they charged my card TWICE, going from a $45 meal to almost $100 for some fried rice and pad thai. If you go there and pay by card, take the customer copy of the receipt, and please check your transaction history to make sure they don’t do it to you as well.
Great patio and good Thai food
Quaint little place, outside dining and excellent service and selections. Very much.. Recommend!
It was a holiday weekend so place was crowded but great food and friendly service.
