Surin West was one of the first meals we had in Birmingham. Returned to try their lunch menu, which is very well-priced! We were greeted with friendly service and excellent lunch options. We only had to wait around 15-20 minutes for our food during peak lunch hours on a Friday. If you’re a UAB student or employee don’t forget to bring your badge for a 10% discount 🤭

This tasted very similar to the Masaman Curry, just a touch sweeter. It was flavorful and very filling!

Parking: It may be a bit difficult to find, but there is a large lot dedicated to Surin West customers around the corner from the restaurant. There is also street parking directly in front of the building, but this will typically be full during peak times.

Good place, even if we did go with 30 minutes left before dinner service. But they were very accommodating, I'm the fact that they still seated us and were very professional. The food is really good as well The appetizers of dim sum, and the surin baskets ( incredible flavor, definitely should try these) were outstanding. The pad Thai in my opinion could have used more savory It tasted a little sweet even if it was the spiciest level you could which is three. The spicy beef noodles though with shrimp were mighty tasty. Overall really good experience would give them a try again.

Had a party of 5, 3 of the 5 had never had Thai food. I ordered the dim sum (very good), pot stickers (very good), spicy beef salad(not so good, I’ve had better). 2 orders of Pineapple fried rice (I have it before but would not recommended getting here, very salty), chicken fried rice , shrimp fried rice (both of the rice dishes were dry), and the spicy basil chicken (this is my go to dish, I wasn’t impressed at all, not enough basil in the dish). I’ve been to many Thai restaurants before, I would not recommend this place.

I am a huge fan of Thai food. I've been to almost every Thai restaurant in the region and many outside of it, and this is easily the worst I've ever been to.

The Thai noodle dish was horrendous. Noodles were overcooked, the veggies and egg sparse, and the sauce was so bland and there wasn't enough of it. Not to mention, it was priced twice as much as its equivalent dish at another restaurant in the area and had an eighth of the quality.

There are other dishes here that aren't nearly as bad, but still, most of it is pretty mediocre and way overpriced for what you get. If your version of pad Thai, the national dish of Thailand is such a disappointment, then what even are you doing claiming to be a Thai restaurant? Among the Surin branches, this one is by far the worst.

Not to mention, drunks at the bar will feel free to make loud, rude comments about others in the store.

If you want to go somewhere to be among rude, tasteless clientele who judge the flavor of their food solely by how much it costs, then this is the place for you.

Ordered chicken fingers numerous times and went in November and ordered chicken fingers x 2 and grilled veggies and they changed chicken fingers and kept the same price and no notification they had changed. They were horrible! I can get better at the hospital cafeteria without the price! Called and was told to come back in and they would refund so I went back in and was told I could only order something else for replacement because manager was out. I wasted my entire lunch break to be told they were sorry I would have to pay and come back later for a refund because manager was out of the country and wouldn’t be back until the next week. I never got my 30$ + for this horrible food they served. Will NEVER be back. Horrible food and beyond horrible and dishonest customer service !

Everytime I'm in Birmingham I come here for lunch and always good food.

Every time I visit here the food, service and atmosphere are great! I’ve come alone, with a friend, with small & very large groups. Each visit was exceptional and I always enjoy my meals and DRINKS. Definitely try the Surin baskets & the spicy beef salad!😉

So, i literally went here bc my ex gf liked it. I'm not even sure what to order. My gf ordered for me. The service has always been great. I can't complain at all about the service. Restaurant is very clean. Its actually very modern design. I'm just not a fan of the food. Personal preferences. I did eat something I just don't know what.

The food is tasty, fresh, and luxurious. The ingredients and cuts are well chosen. The server is attentive and pleasant. Ahh that being said, the price is about 20% too high. It feels as though the tip is baked into the menu price. Even their lunch menu doesn't actually reduce the costs of meals compared to the full menu, it's just less options. The portions don't leave you hungry (if you order an appetizer), but don't expect to be taking home lunch for tomorrow. This is a restaurant where you go for the experience of being in a luxury restaurant.

Go and enjoy yourself at Surin West, but go knowing that's why you're doing it.

Unfortunately, I do deliveries for this restaurant from time to time. I always walk in with dread because they pay that hand out, the orders are often very rude. They treat you as though you are inferior to them. There is one male bartender who wears glasses that is an absolute nightmare. If you like, going places where people have an attitude that is quite pompous, this is the place for you.

Ordered delivery. Got the massaman curry, pad see u, egg rolls, dim sum and Wasabi making roll. ALL of it was 10/10 so good. Couldn't pick a favorite. Highly recommend!

Food was very average. I ask if they could make my food spicy. They ended up sprinkling my food with crushed dry peppers and the food was super sweet. Was not expecting that from a Thai restaurant at all.

I've visited multiple times going back before COVID. Both the quality of food and the number of patrons around lunch time have declined since the epidemic. Portions are good sized, but the food is less flavorful. The coconut soup remains good, however.

I have eaten many times over the years at Surin West and lately every time I ask myself “with all the options why would I eat here?. Tonight was no exception.

I ordered food through Uber Eats but called the restaurant directly and asked that hot mustard and soy sauce be included. The person that answered was very pleasant but he failed to do what was promised. The next issue was the brown rice that was ordered was just over half full (see pic). I was prepared to throw the whole order (thinking the food had been tampered) but the manager advised that was how the order is made. Frankly that is absurd given you pay extra

I finally decided to eat the food and it was average at best. I bought a chicken vegetable dish and a soup. Both very bland…almost like food you would get in a school lunchroom.

It took a few lessons for me to realize that Surin West is simply average and nothing more. The food tonight cost $42 (more expensive since ordering through Uber) and it was certainly not worth it. No more Surin West for me!

The service was amazing. We didn't realize it was close to closing, but we never felt rushed. The server was friendly and attentive. I wish I could remember his name but it was a tall guy with facial hair. The food was great and the coconut soup with shrimp was delicious. My first time ever having it and I loved it.

This is one of my most favored restaurants. It’s very reasonably priced. The service is cordial and quick, and the atmosphere is great. A very nice place to take a date when money is skim but you want to impress. My favorite is the Thai Barbecue Chicken.

I’ve been coming here for 16 years. I love their Pad Thai Tofu. It’s so big now since renovation, it’s lost a coziness but I get they have to accommodate larger groups. This February 2024, I met a friend for Thursday night dinner at 5:30, so pretty empty. Food, including their delicious egg rolls, were delicious as always. I was disappointed they no longer do a pot of tea, but only single cups now. Presentation of tea was off. Plain see-glass mug, with two honey packets. The tea cup was sitting in a puddle of tea in the saucer, so the packets were all wet and the cup dripped every time I drank from it. Doesn’t seem like a lot for an Asian restaurant to be able to have pots of tea for those who want it. That is my only complaint.

I took a group of my daughters' UAB art student friends out for a late night after their show at a gallery for various snacks we had a great time the food was good and very creative the service was excellent and very helpful and professional. We had appetizer baskets and chicken Pow chicken fried rice and egg rolls and a bunch of other stuff that was really good. Surin has been a solid Thai restaurant in this community maybe 20 years it still is you can't go wrong there great meal and great place and great service.

Surin has great food - really liked everything we've tried in multiple visits. They also have good cocktails but they are not consistent. The same drink will vary greatly depending on who makes it which means you're rolling the dice every time you order one. Best advice: figure out which cocktail style you prefer and ask for that bartender.

Fantastic food and service. I’ve been to Thailand 7 times. Pad Thai is my favorite. At Surin it’s labeled as Thai Noodle. Get that and ask for their chili sauce to mix in. It’s on point!

TOWING SCAM: I parked behind the sign that reads Surin West parking and was towed. When I picked up my vehicle the tow co. told me I was towed because my dash didnt have a Surin receipt on it. I know nothing about that, its not posted and I didnt even receive a receipt from anyone. Also I noticed there were still a few vehicles parked in the lot near me. Why werent they towed? All of this on top of high priced mediocre food and slow service. I also walked past 3 individuals to enter the restaurant that were asking each other if they had hepatitis and where they liked to shoot up. A few weeks ago someone was shot across the street at Black Market bar. 5 points is still a dangerous dump and I hope they shut down Surin for the shady towing racket.

The Thai barbe cue chicken with shrimp fried rice is my favorite! YOU get half of a whole chicken roasted til it falls off the bone foar around 13 bucks.

I had some of the best Thai food I have ever tasted. I enjoyed the egg rolls, the pad Thai, and the crab appetizer. I give the margarita a 10/10. The margarita may not be suitable for those who do not like their drinks strong and full of alcohol. Unfortunately, I was too hungry to take any pictures. But when we visit again, we do know it’s in our rotation of places!

I got coconut spicy soup, and it was awesome. On the other hand, I also got Thai noodles, which come with chicken and shrimp! The food was like eating alive chicken! It has a very strong raw chicken smell and taste. It would be much better if they would marinate chicken with onion or cook it with onion or garlic or any other strong spice to cover the smell!

My family and I have gone to Surin in 5 points for decades. It used to be the best quality food available without having to put a suit and tie on for rich folk fancy dinners. But this last year has been a huge let down. Every single time I order the Super Crunch or Salmon sashimi the fish has an extremely fishy and old taste to it. They slice the salmon into pieces so thin they can be inhaled. And on top of the poor quality they charge the highest prices for it. This most recent time 3 out of 4 of us got food posioning from the Salmon. Never again.

Okinawa in Homewood is the new superior Asian style food in Birmingham.

Very disappointing. The musaman beef was tough and the noodle dish lacked the vibrant flavors usually found.

The coconut soup was so salty neither my coworker or I finished it. Maybe it was an off day in the kitchen. I once ate spicy beef salad 4 days in a row here. I'll get a craving in a while and be back though

I absolutely love eating here. I get lunch from here most of the time, and it's always delicious. The catfish special is my go-to for an awesome meal to fuel the rest of my workday. I keep planning to come through for dinner one night, as the atmosphere is quite pleasant with a very calm and comfortable feel in the restaurant, and the sushi is top-notch!

10 years ago this would have been a 5 star easy. The sushi looked like it was put together by amateurs. Smeared avocado. Loosely packed with very little rice. Basic plate presentation. Not what i would expect when im paying 11 to 15 bucks a rolll. No one there seemed to be in a hurry at all and the experience itself was strongly meh.

*update* food has gotten better which just makes the place seem even more tragic because the service is needlessly slow and/or just absent and the prices (close to $20 a plate) did not encourage my return.
Going to get it to go next time. that way i only have to pay for what i get, the food, because the rest isn't worth it.

Parking issues have kept us away too long. This was a Friday early evening and we were thrilled to find free parking behind the building that didn't result in a boot on our car after dinner.
Food was served quickly and great service from I think Darryl? Thai tea and coconut soup are must haves. The only minor issue was they seem to have trouble finding chilis to spice things up. So the food was milder than expected.
